Arrogance Of Ignorance

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

Minster of Industries Sunil Handunneththi’s performance at a panel discussion at the 2025 Summer Davos meet of World Economic Forum held in Nanjing unleashed a monstrously huge tide of chattering that continues unabated keeping the chattering class busy on the importance of English.

A friend of my vintage sent me an edited video clip of our Minister’s response to a question posed to him with the sardonic remark ‘the tragedy of our times.’ This ‘pukka sahib’ hoity toity remark failed to spur my curiosity on the alleged faux pas of the Comrade Minister. I salute him for the courage he displayed in participating in the event.

Later, a well-known academic and popular Youtuber known for his dialectical devilry in challenging the orthodox, shocked me with the remark that perhaps a person such as NPP parliamentarian Lakmali Hemachandra could have been deployed to avoid this embarrassing ‘AKARATHABBYA’ – predicament.

So, I decided to find out more about the World Economic Forums meet at Nanjing China. The State Council of China in its English website explains why it decided to host the 2025 Summer Davos in Nanjing.

It explains that. This  year’s Summer Davos forum is themed “Entrepreneurship in the New Era” and is expected to bring together around 1,800 participants from over 90 countries and regions.

It will focus on five key areas — deciphering the world economy, outlook on China, industries disrupted, investing in people and the planet, and new energy and materials.

The State Council of China proceeds to explain its long-term plans for China itself and for the rest of Asia.

‘As one of the most dynamic regions in the world, Asia drives 60 percent of global economic growth, with China accounting for half of that contribution. This year’s Summer Davos forum will provide opportunities for participants to deepen their understanding of development trends in China and Asia.’

I understand the anguished howls and painful yearning of the Chattering Classes who miss Ranil Wickremesinghe’s urbane homilies on geopolitics and his penchant for important trivialities at such events.

The question we must ask is does this NPP Government possess the needed ‘Brains Trust” with diverse expertise, endowed with the elan and the bravura for strategic thinking, to navigate our nation’s progress in the 21st Century.  Does the NPP process within its rank’s minds exposed to the vast varied literature and entrepreneurial talent pool the world offers in the new era that the State council of China intended to tap by hosting the Summer Davos in Nanjing?

Obviously, Minister Handunneththi was briefed beforehand. He responded with a prepared text. Natural beauty and splendor of our Island home, Promise of the Port City, the damage caused by brain drain were some of his salient focus points. On the issue of Trumpian Tariffs, he had no views. He had no pronounced point of view on the Us dollar’s hegemonic hold in global trade. He had no opinion on the possible opportunities in deepening relations with regional players in ASEAN. He was neutral on geopolitics. He was totally adrift in Geoeconomics.

“Let thy speech be better than silence or be silent,” said Dionysius of Halicarnassus!

Participating in a Global Economic parley is not about scoring political points at home.  It calls for a profoundly forthright assessment of the success and failures of the past, a pragmatic grip of contemporary compulsions and a clearsighted vision of the future.

To those interested in learning what transpired at the Panel Discussion at Nanjing here is the link.

His detractors accuse him of giving a “Koheda Yanne Malle Pol” answer. That is unkind. The question in effect was how Sri Lanka perceived Asia in the 21st Century considering US unilateralism in Global Trade.

Though awkward in diction and syntax the poor man was representing a political movement that has no clearly defined vision on Sri Lanka’s role in 21st Century Asia.

They have promised ‘System Chang’. They are committed to change the system. No one knows what system they wish to replace the old system with!

I was an ardent champion of Anura Kumara Dissanayake for the Presidency. I endorsed the NPP reluctantly and with less conviction. It was the instinctive revulsion of Tweedledum and Tweedledee that made me endorse the NPP. I didn’t bother with the local government elections.

It is time we remind comrade President AKD that enough is enough. Geoeconomics tells us that in the first half of the 21st Century India will be the world’s third largest economy. China’s will be the world’s largest economy. Trump or no Trump, the ‘exorbitant privilege ‘of the US Dollar as the worlds reserve currency will end much sooner than we are led to believe by neoliberal punditry.

These days I watch our parliamentary proceedings somewhat assiduously. Vituperative rhetoric of the opposition is squarely matched by puerile moralizing from some Government members. Both sides contribute to the spectacle.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu summed up the lot of political trapeze artists. Their  “Arrogance really comes from insecurity, and in the end our feeling that we are bigger than others is really the flip side of our feeling that we are smaller than others.”

Sri Lanka needs a Brain trust to advise the government on strategic engagement with key players in emerging Asia. That brings me to the point of departure of this essay- Arrogance of Ignorance.

Change means becoming different. Change is intrinsic to human progress. That said, in our globally interconnected world ~ something is changing about change. The very nature of change itself – its speed, scale and impact.

We are only seven months in governmental saddle, no excuse for the slow pace of change.

The government must possess a relentless drive to understand the world around us. We must first understand what we know and what we do not know.  The government’s front benches are quietly slipping into that classic mistaken notion of power that authority is wisdom.

Daniel Boorstin is a great historian. He authored the classic work Discoverers – A history of man’s search to know his world and himself. He summed up the predicament of today’s ruling party the NPP. The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance; It is the illusion of knowledge.

Another example comes to mind. When someone you dislike says something, you don’t understand, the easiest thing to do is to rubbish it. The fault is that of the speaker. Meanwhile the listener is cocooned in the bliss of indifference to the truth.

“It’s a universal law — intolerance is the first sign of an inadequate education,” observed the great Russian writer, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. “An ill-educated person behaves with arrogant impatience, whereas truly profound education breeds humility.”

The brave new world the NPP promised is fast turning into a Chimera.

The NPP badly needs historical literacy.

The writer says: ” The Government’s front benches are quietly slipping into the classic mistake of power that authority is wisdom”.
Couldn’t have said better than that. Read through some of the utterances made by the Senior Ministers, like the Ministers of Justice, Public Security, and his Deputy, Ports and Aviation, in Parliamentary debates. Such speeches are in Hansard, and I do not endeavour to reproduce them here. Most recently, the Public Security Minister participated in the discussion on the Easter Sunday attack, and went on to bring the name Pillain and stated “he had prior knowledge of the attack”. Is he the only person who had prior knowledge of that attack? What of so many who had knowledge and were even made to pay compensation in millions by the Supreme Court? Didn’t the Minister in charge of the Port say: ” I was the one who directed to release of the 320 containers”. Now he says, ” Arrest me if I have authorized the release”. Just yesterday, according to media reports, this same Minister had said: ” We appointed Shani Abeysekera as the Director General of CID on the request of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.” Many more such statements made by the “Front Bench” of mistaken knowledge of “Power is Authority”. In short, why can’t these Ministers just keep their mouths shut until the relevant investigations are completed?

      D,
I expected the law and order situation to improve dramatically after the AKD-led government took power. However, what we hear today is no different from the days of MaHaRaja and his harsh administration. Those who continue to play housana in support of the AKD leadership should provide an explanation for the situation described below.

The Embarrassing debacle of Minister Hundunnetti should not be a surprise. Fundamentally, those who joined the JVP did not stand up with the rest of the class at an equal level. They could not rub shoulders with the main stream political elite. The educational qualifications of the Ministers and the sundry are doubtful if not dubious. The Presidential Secretariat is manned by unqualified people with no communications skills. No knowledge of ethics or have a sense of duty or commitment. The AKD administration must be at the bottom of what ever there was.

Mr HP, thanks for your comment. This is exactly what I meant from the begining on.
          .
“Fundamentally, those who joined the JVP did not stand up with the rest of the class at an equal level.”

Would 6.8 million voters ever choose to elect them if they were fully aware of what you described above? This is the reason why I opposed from the begining on, that we srilankens will be decieved again, if people would vote for AKD and his team. Once more, this is the fault of our people and the mainstream media.

Or didn’t supported/voted for them at all …….. and now want to reinforce/consolidate ye biases/prejudices ye had from the get-go?

    Sarath De Alwis,

Well,…..with Handuneththi, US brought down the tariffs from 50% to 30%. The man was very careful to speak very diplomatically and not take sides and commit to things like BRICS and BRI like what you would prefer. Send man-of-the-soil Handuneththi again to Washington DC to speak about importing some American corn, wheat, cars, and steel…..actually Handuneththi’s authentic and simple demeanor will do the trick and they will feel sorry for us and knock off another 20% W/O US imports.

      Dear RTF,
In order for the Nobel committee to consider awarding you the next noble prize for your skills in the following fields, I would like to recommend your name.

Investigating a person’s inner world through psychology, phenomenology, or psychoanalysis

Examining a person’s social and cultural background = Sociology or Anthropology

Phenomenology or existential philosophy is the study of their lived or subjective experiences.

Let’s talk about whether the other commenters share your talent assessment. You also go into great detail about Trump’s abilities. I believe our commenters will contribute to a more general discussion of this topic.

So, from bankruptcy to importing American rubbish cars no other country wants & corn & wheat to make those fancy bread & pizza. That is progress for a third world country with no proper public transport system. Now the poor people can eat bread instead of rice too. .

I suppose getting simple folk to switch to pizzas & fancy bread from the usual rice can be seen as progress in the 21st century & solves the problem of shortage of rice at an affordable price to the masses. I would have expected that from a capitalist govt. but does’t the socialist JVP against such’westernisation’?
As for cars, the average citizen has no choice, apart from used Japanese imports or cheap brands with questionable build quality but I am sure if the Rajapakses were in power, they would have loved the excuse to import Cameros & Corvettes. Still, when it come to sex on wheels, Europeans, particularly, Italians can’t be beaten.

Raj-UK,….what nonsense…..everybody eats bread. Even at the time of Sirimavo, suffering masses were doled out bread. Instead of pizza that tourists like to eat, masses can eat more wholesome mas, malu, and seeni sambol buns. There’s also American corn. Ford, Dodge, and Buicks can be imported as they well made and can be cheaper (under 25K). Then there’s American steel.

              Hello SJ,
Unfortunately there is only one truly British Car currently in production – Morgan. Not exactly mass market material, but very nice.
              https://www.catautokeys.co.uk/faq/top-10-british-car-brands-international-owners/
Datsun (Nissan) and other far Eastern Models put the Nail in the Coffin of the British Car Industry. They were better quality, cheaper and more reliable. My Ford Escort broke down in 1977. My American Manager was going back to Texas permanently so he sold me his Datsun 160. It was like chalk and cheese. British Engineering was very good but stuck with out of date Machine Tooling and Production Methods. Quality Systems were window dressing.
The rest is history and Margaret Thatcher helped the decline no end.
              Best regards

                  Hello OC,
Yes I had a Sony Trinitron TV circa 1974 that didn’t break down ever.
We were sold the idea at School and in the Press that British Manufactured Goods were the Best in the World. In the late 1800s that might have been true, however in the 1970s and 80s it was obviously not the case.
Sir John Harvey-Jones ex Chairman of ICI did a series on TV in the 90s called “Troubleshooter” showing some of the reasons for the decline of British Manufacturing Companies – https://www.bbc.com/historyofthebbc/anniversaries/march/troubleshooter

Morgan is no longer family owned & not the ‘quintessential’ British brand anymore . Morgan relied on Ford, Vauxhall. Fiat & BMW for engines. Other bits & pieces, apart from body panels & interior, too are also sourced from various parts ‘bins’. More interesting is Caterham . which is doing well in amateur racing circles.
In the 70s, British Leyland was the 3rd biggest manufacturer in the world but poor build quality, lack of investment in technology & massive management errors, as well as, a militant trade union, caused its demise. Had BL not been so big, perhaps, it may have survived. BL made some fantastic cars but was let down by poor build quality due to union influence & lack of development due to bean counters advising management. Iconic British brands still thrive but not under British ownership & Nissan’s Sunderland plant is the most efficient in Europe. In motor sports, British influence is foremost & is the ‘home’ for Formula 1, the cream of motor sports.. Indigenous British car manufacturing may be no more but in a global context, British contribution is significant.

                  Hello Raj-UK,
Thanks for the update. You are right about the Formula 1 Engineering. When I started working in Qatar (Dec 2010) we had an office downstairs from Williams F1 in QSTP (Qatar Science & Technology Park) – https://www.autoarabia.org/articles/495/Qatar%27s%20QSTP%20facility%20and%20Williams%20F1%20establishes%20technical%20centre%20in%20Doha
I visited their Office a few times and had many conversations with their Developers over Lunch. Frank Williams had a reputation for not suffering fools gladly and also as a hard taskmaster, however at that time they were at the top regarding Research & Development. Microsoft and HP (my previous Employer) also had offices in QSTP.

              SJ

The motor industry is global with multinational ownership. The British indigenous motor industry was over in the 70s but some brand names survive. However, there are certain skills that are associated with the brands & excellence in British engineering which is why BMW, Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing remain in UK despite the ownership shifting to Germans & Indians. The Chinese bought Rover & Volvo because Chinese products, until now, were ‘reverse engineered & copies of Japanese models. The build quality was so poor that Chinese cars could not be sold in most countries, therefore, needed the expertise of established manufacturers.

US is the biggest export market for Jaguar Land Rover & though not as the same as the Germans for build quality, is far ahead of US products in terms of engineering & quality. US cars are now mostly ‘badge engineered’ to keep the brand name alive & have no significant export market. Chrysler is now part of an European alliance. So to your question, yes, British cars are much better in terms of engineering, overall efficiency & build quality.

I think that you will do well to objectively research Chinese car sales globally.

“Chinese products, until now, were ‘reverse engineered …..”
This has been a recurring refrain for those old enough to remember. British cars were all the rage till the Japanese improved on the Austins they imported, and made better Hillmans than the Brits themselves.
                  https://images.app.goo.gl/K8mSZCAHUwAFHeqs5
Then the Koreans came in for ridicule , and after that the Marutis. Now it’s the Chinese. History repeats itself.
At least nowadays, the front wheels don’t fall off at inconvenient moments, unlike with Morris Minors.

American Cars are not suited to Sri Lankan roads. You can buy a bottle (750 ml) of California Red/White Wine for 7 US$ (about 2000 Rupees) at Walmart. Much Cheaper than the European Brands sold here. Not everything in the US is expensive. Look around the shops over there and come up with some real suggestions.

Unfortunately, the minister’s (Sunil Handunetti’s) reputation as “a walking wicktionary” was revealed to be “an empty vessel” in addition to the English language barrier: Not even basic knowledge based on the facts, but his repeated refusal to participate in an economic discussion prior to the election was a clear indication that Handunetti is not a true economist, even though those who are dishonest about him portray it as such.
An economics degree alone does not qualify one as an economist. But that’s how they portrayed it. Before they were elected, that served as the foundation for their acerbic public rhetoric. But now they always attack the opponents.

“On the issue of Trumpian Tariffs, he had no views…no pronounced point of view on the Us dollar’s hegemonic hold…no opinion on the possible opportunities in deepening relations with …ASEAN. He was neutral on geopolitics. He was totally adrift in Geoeconomics.”
    Was it just SH?
What would have been President AKD’s performance like if he was the spokesperson?
Having seen his surrender to Modi, I think that it is disingenuous to distinguish between the President and his government.
Neither is Marxist. Neither has a steadfast anti-imperialist policy. Neither has a vision for the country beyond what the IMF has to offer.

      Mr SJ,
“Neither has a vision for the country beyond what the IMF has to offer.”
Ironically, they made the strongest case that there are other ways to boost the faltering economy besides the IMF. But they have been struggling today, unable to even resolve small matters, much less create miracles. They can only keep fooling the gallery, which is a miracle. However, how long?
In his most recent performance, Handunetti made a lot of revelations. Why should he have been preoccupied with “malle pol -incoherent” responses if he had been more knowledgeable about Tarrfs and the important issues facing modern-day Sri Lanka?

I happened to watch a video today in which the president himself made numerous “empty” promises regarding the allocation of additional funds to continue building some housing complexes in Weligama.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMZbjtfnQQs
Where will he get that much money if the government is unable to even provide basic necessities to those who truly need them? More than 40% of people are thought to be living below the poverty line at the moment.

“I do visualise a Myanmar II is in the making !” .
The reason for this is that the man who was elected by 6.8 million voters, giving him a parliamentary majority as they had anticipated, has failed to recognize the message that the people have sent. The scenario that many had predicted would resemble “L-board leadership” is now in front of us.

I have no idea what goes through the minds of many CT commentators, or why some strange comments are promoted in this forum while the majority of comments are met with “red thumbs” by many of them. What’s the matter with CT today?

See the colossal waste of public money by the previous administrations. Look at the abandoned buildings spending millions of taxpayers’ money. Have any other Presidents visited these sites and discussed the unproductive waste that has been imposed on the economy of the country? This is how we were made bankrupt. When the president sees for himself and questions the relevant authorities to find solutions, the “Erudite” commentators from abroad find themselves irritated. This was revealed at the District Coordinating Committee held at Matara.

We don’t regret voting for this “Thambuthegama Gamarala”, the son of the Survey Dept. “Labourer” to be the President. As “NF” said, this President is the BEST so far.

      Douglas,
That isn’t how the country went bankrupt. Here is the real reason, with audited figures, from the agreement with the IMF:
“On the CPC, the government has said a small margin in the fuel pricing formula is utilized to repay $251 million of the old financial obligations.

“Of this amount, $146 million remains to be repaid as of end-March 2025, and we will ensure that these repayments continue.”

“We plan to settle CEB’s remaining legacy debt (incurred prior to 2023), estimated at about Rs.180 billion as of end-2024. Repayment of this debt is included in the electricity tariff calculation starting in June 2025,” the government said referring to Ceylon Electricity Board.

“We are finalizing a medium-term strategic plan for Sri Lankan Airlines (SLA), which will include plans to restore operational viability and resolve legacy debts.”
      https://economynext.com/sri-lanka-promises-structural-reforms-financial-viability-of-soes-to-imf-230081/
You might note that even Mattala airport cost 300 million USD.
      .
SUBSIDIES is the word. The money is in the pockets of voters, who were the ones who used subsidised fuel and electricity. Things are going to get worse before they get better, if ever.

old codger, we will finalise and we will restore is what you say and even the cost of the Mattala airport. Things are not going to get better if ever is what the Creator God said and Isa. 45,5 says ” I am the Lord. There is no other” Jesus will return to Jerusalem as promised.

old codger, I don’t need loans. You ask your non existent Allah and confirm there will be no response. Sad that you still follow falsehood to end up suffering. Jehovah was the creator of oil wells and all else of universe.

I expected the law and order situation to improve dramatically after the AKD-led government took power. However, what we hear today is no different from the days of MaHaRaja and his harsh administration. Those who continue to play housana in support of the AKD leadership should provide an explanation for the situation described below.

              N P P led by J V P is under the impression that creating a
law-abiding citizenry is an easy catch . The Developed
world maintains it by providing equal opportunity to its
people and looking after them from the womb to coffin .
Not everybody can do it .People there respect law and order
in return for the respect law and order provides them . We
have to build them from scratch . But these N P P guys are
not in the right shape of doing it correctly .

                WW,
Furthermore, JVP led NPP thought it would be easy to rule a nation where nearly 99 percent of the population is corrupt or supports corruption. Because they lack the vision to change the system, they are now forced to “pick up JAPANJABARA in paddy fields, paint the walls, plaster cement etc.” Can you imagine? They are either racists, racists’ supporters, or hatemongers. Is that not a waste of time for those responsible ministers and the prime minister? It’s acceptable to leave some examples, but lawmakers are expected to introduce new systems and successfully implement them so that the subject-matter experts can work without any problems. Pundits who support JVP, you have a responsibility to explain this to us. Thank you.

No doubts , they have started to feel the heat . They don’t
have a clue about the politics of governance . They didn’t
yet start to govern and still playing the same game they
played while in the opposition . For how long ? Their target
is mainly dislodging outspoken opposition members from
gaining grounds . Water is boiling for them .

Unfortuantely, there are a lot of people in our hell who believe pigs will fly someday. They are governed by Karmic thoughts. No matter what, even if they have graduated, they rely on utopic, unattainable dreams. We should have positive hopes, but we should also be realistic.

TIt was the arrogance of ignorance that led Sri Lanka to bankruptcy — a failure of leadership. Yet, the people are the ones still paying the price through IMF repayments.”the Historian leaders defrauded the country, and the greatest shame is that they have driven Sri Lanka into bankruptcy, forcing the nation to beg before the world. They travel from country to country making hollow speeches filled with promises and excuses, pleading for aid while hiding their failures and corruption from their own people.”

“These so-called leaders have not only looted the nation but disgraced it on the global stage. They’ve bankrupted Sri Lanka and now stand before foreign nations with empty hands and rehearsed speeches, begging for money while pretending to lead with dignity.”

RBH59, there is a promise in the bible in Ps.122,6 to pray for the peace of Jerusalem, as those who love and act on it shall prosper. It is well worth following it for results.

“The brave new world the NPP promised is fast turning into a Chimera.”
I would like to say that NPP’s promises about new world is based on “Aragalaya” is a fact but NPP misused “Aragalaya” motives of new world and new system change. The country need considerable changes and every institution’s go through substantial changes. I still believe that removal of the past 77 years of system and those who carried out the system should be eliminated. In this process, I hope the people have realised the truth than politicians of NPP based on “Aragalaya”. Not a single Government make substantial change without acknowledging the past of their behaviour. Once again, Religion should not be in Politics.

In fairness the JVP was supportive of the protest, and JVP leaders were seen among participants.
But it did nothing to defend the Aragalaya when the RW-MR government vented its fury on the Aragalaya.
