BBS And The Pseudepigraphy In Buddhism

 By Jagath Asoka

Dr. Jagath Asoka

I am writing this article because I want to learn about early Buddhism from those who are knowledgeable in early Buddhism, based on historically verifiable facts, not speculation or faith. When I wrote my last article “Balloth Ekka Bae” I was in a facetious mood, but my state of mind is somewhat solemn now.

I am interested in the origin of the Buddhist Scripture and the oral tradition that led to the compilation of the Pali canon. Are there any examples in Buddhism that are similar to pseudepigraphy, the false ascription of a piece of writing to a well-known author? This phenomenon is common in other religions. My interest in this subject is purely historical, not theological. Since the oral tradition was common in many religions, is it possible that something similar to pseudepigraphy that we see in various written texts of many religious traditions also happened in the oral tradition of Buddhism that led to the Pali canon? In other words, how can we say with certitude that we are reading the original and authentic words of the Buddha since he did not write a single word for posterity? I am not questioning the validity or the practicality of the sutras—sutras work for those who live their lives by following them. But what evidence do we have to support that these sutras contain the original words of the Buddha?  For most Buddhists, this is not an issue. But if you are a historian or if you firmly believe that these are the inerrant words of the Buddha, you might not agree with the majority. When these sutras are taught, often, we are told that these are the words of the Buddha himself. I know that this is a very sensitive subject to many Buddhists, but my questions are sincere, and I have no intention of mocking any religion, let alone my own; I personally believe that all of us are Buddhist after all, but we just do not know it.

Even though I just have a rudimentary historical knowledge in early Buddhism, I know a bit more about early Christianity. I do not know much about the origin of the Pali canon, but the origin of the New Testament began with the Letters of Paul, around 50 CE, and the Gospels—Mark, Mathew, Luke, and John—were written from around 65 CE to 100 CE. Canonical Gospels—Mark, Mathew, Luke, and John—and some non-canonical Gospels such as the Gospel of Thomas that was discovered in Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in 1945, contain sayings of Jesus, which were not written by Jesus but were written, at least, 20 years later, by others, based on oral traditions. As far as I am aware, it took more than 200 years for Buddhists to write down the words of the Buddha. We simply do not know how accurate and reliable these words are because the monks who memorized these words are not alive today for me to question them and interrogate them to find out whether they added their own words.

Pseudepigraphy, the false ascription of a piece of writing to a well-known author, was used by unknown writers who wanted to promote their own beliefs by using a name of a well-known writer. For example, in the New Testament, authorship of six letters ascribed to Apostle Paul is considered as “pseudoepigraphical letters” by scholars. Since I have an enormous interest in the phenomenon of religion, the first question that came to my mind was related to my own religion, Buddhism. We know that pseudepigraphy happened in the written tradition because there are books to compare. But we cannot question the Buddhist monks who memorized these Buddhist sutras to find out whether they inserted their own thoughts into the sayings of the Buddha.

I once tried to read, with alacrity, a book—the Magic of the Mind—written by Katukurunde Ñāṇananda, a well known Sri Lankan Buddhist scholar, who is knowledgeable in concepts and reality in early Buddhist thought. But my rudimentary knowledge in Buddhism was not enough to understand the concepts and the key message in this book. So far, this book has been the only book that I tried to read but could not comprehend; however, I have not given up, yet. So finding good books written for the general public is a real problem in Buddhism. Most scholars do not know how to communicate and write books for the general public.

I firmly believe that Buddhism encourages asking questions, but I have not found anyone who is capable of having a cohesive, intelligible discussion and providing reasonable fact-based, historically accurate explanations to my questions. I have been reading comparative religion since I earned my doctorate in chemistry in 1994, and have written a book, not for scholars but for the general public with the intention of promoting tolerance and harmony through understanding of other peoples’ religions, which I think is the best way to understand the phenomenon of religion.

I am looking for your recommendations and guidance to learn about early Buddhism, the origin and creation of the Pali Canon, and the practice of pseudepigraphy in Buddhism, which scholars have studied meticulously in Christianity.

The Pali canon, which is so vast, makes it impossible for a novice to get a rudimentary knowledge and understanding of Buddhism. Even though I am not a Christian, a Muslim, or a Jew, my knowledge in these religions is sufficient enough for me to have my own opinions about these religions. I think having books such as the Bible and the Koran, which do not require a truck to carry them around, has made these religions much more accessible to the general public.

So, recommend me some books, preferably in English, because I do not know any Pali or Sanskrit, and my knowledge in my own language is rudimentary: I have read only one book in the Sinhalese Language for the last 35 years, a book by Amaradeva, Gee Sara Muwarada.

Yes, I was raised as a Buddhist but like others who were reared as Buddhists in a country where Buddhism is not just a religion but its heritage, I know almost nothing about Buddhism.

There are two Buddhist temples in New Jersey, which are closer to Pennsylvania, where I reside. But I don’t feel comfortable having a discussion with the Buddhist monks here in New Jersey or in New York because I never got the impression that scholarly activities are in the realm of their interests.

If Bodu Bala Sena wants to do something positive, here is your chance. From the comments that I got, it is evident that some members who are affiliated with this group are excellent writers, but malice has become their driving force. If you want to promote and protect Buddhism, which is both our religion and heritage, then help people learn Buddhism by providing historically accurate information or by living according to the teachings of the Buddha; otherwise, you will be known as the Buddhist-Taliban in Sri Lanka.

    Dear Asoka,

    Early Buddhism ?

First you read Hindu scripts “Upanishad” “Bagwat Gita” on internet, then you would be on-course to understand what you are searching for.

      Dear Jagath Asoka,

We all should be very proud that even in today’s dog infected, “Okkama Ballo”, Sinhala Buddhism, there are intelligent, rational, observational Lankans and those who are after the truth, rather than blindly following Myths, or Traditions, that were not written down for 4 Centuries, until it was written down at the Aluvihare Temple,Sri Lanka, around 80 BC in Pali. That is what you have got, and can pick up some Mahayana writings in Sanskrit. The Pali Cannon is is 12,000 pages long, and you are better off asking the same specific question from 10 different sets of Monks and Scholars, and compare their answers.

Remember, Buddhism, sprang out of the Ascetic tradition of Hinduism, and you need to read the Upanishads as well.

BBS and their clones are about Sinhala Racism, piggy backing off Buddhism.

Thank you Jagath. You have elements of Copernicus, Galileo, Kepler, Martin Luther, Darwin, the Natural Philosophers, the Historians all combined in your quest. You will find similar objection by those who are entrenched, who want to maintain their Hegemony, and perpetuate their Myths, for their own self-interest, as the Christian Church and the Islamic Mullahs and Ulemas did to the Natural Philosophers of an earlier era.

Buddhism, as it is practiced today, is a Religion, a Dogma, with some variations of Philosophy thrown in, and with many fairly tales and children’s stories, like in Christianity. Nobody, yes nobody, has so far Attained Nirvana, Nibbana, Samsara, Rebirth, Hell, Heaven, Limbo or Purgatory, despite thousands of years of man made myths and preachings, cultivated to maintain Priest-Monk-Mullah Hegemony.

Your Summary, well articulates the issues here.

      1. “I am writing this article because I want to learn about early Buddhism from those who are knowledgeable in early Buddhism, based on historically verifiable facts, not speculation or faith. “

      2. “I am interested in the origin of the Buddhist Scripture and the oral tradition that led to the compilation of the Pali canon. Buddhist monks are supposed to have given up all the worldly things (Materialism), but in Sri Lanka, it’s a different story.

Many Sri Lankans have witnessed the following,

        1. Monks tying pirith thread and blessing people.

        2. Monks expect people to worship them.

        3. Monks in employment.

        4. Monks doing business, handling money, having Bank accounts and applying for Bank loans.

        5. Monks adopting customs, habits and lifestyles like normal people.

        6. Monks printing, recording and selling magazines and Bana cassettes.

        7. Monks growing hair and making themselves attractive.

        8. Monks living in boarding houses instead of temples.

        9. Monks having secret love affairs.

        10. Monks having luxury cars and vans, employing drivers.

        11. Monks forming trade unions/associations.

        12. Monks taking part in racist politics.

        13. Monks supporting and encouraging war.

        14. Monks following Mahavamsa as a guide.

        15. Monks preaching their own Bana instead of Buddha`s Bana.

        16. Monks healing sick people with pirith water.

        17. Monks calling Sri Lanka a Sinhala Buddhist country and preaching Bana only to the Sinhala people.

        18. Monks criticizing and condemning all other religions and races and creating communal hatred among Sinhala Buddhists and others.

        19. Monks taking part in protest rallies and burning flags and effigies.

        20. Monks taking part in terrorist activities such as assassinating Prime minister (Somarama thero).

        21. Monks taking part in fast unto death.

        22. Monks eating non-veg food (Meat and fish).

        23. Monks consuming food/drink in the afternoons/night.

        24. Monks drinking alcohol and gambling, buying instant lottery tickets.

        25. Monks having illegal sex with women or young boys.

        26. Monks keeping mistress in the temple (Buddhrakitha Thero and Ms. Vimala Wijewardene).

        27. Monks listening to music and watching movies.

        28. Monks using the latest mobile phones.

        29. Monks printing fake currency notes.

        30. Monks owning bungalows and real estates.

There is no end, the list goes on.

Did Lord Buddha ever tell the Buddhist monks to engage in the above mentioned activities?

Most of the Sinhala Buddhist Monks do not even follow the 5 basic moral principles (Pancha sila) what Buddha has preached.

          Ravi you are so Right!
It is the lack of a Higher Authority who can discipline and Disrobe these Impostors in Saffron Robes, that has allowed this situation to develop. They do not seem to adhere to the Five Precepts undertaken by Lay People, let alone those required at ordination.
The True Dhamma of the Buddha is almost forgotten, in the performance of all the Superstitious rituals that are practised for warding off perceived Evils.

I wish to add a few more to your list.
1 Buddhist priests follow the caste system which was rejected by by the Buddha 2500 years ago. They ordain novices only from their castes Example; Siyam Nikaya ( Siyam sect) ordains only the children of Govigama.
2 They are unwilling to ordain Tamil boys
3 They are unwilling to spread Lord Buddha’s preaching among the Tamils.
3 What happens to the money donated to big famous Buddhist places such as Sri Pada, Bellanwila, Sri Maha Bodhi, Mihintale, Temple of the Tooth relic etc etc?( Lord Buddha advised Buddhist priests not to use money)

In Sri Lanka, when a person is ordained as a Buddhist monk into the Sinhala Buddhist order, they select a Nikaya for the newly ordained monk according to his caste.

Buddha was born into a high caste Hindu royal family because during that period the caste system in India was very strong. Had he born into a lower caste, the people would not have accepted his teachings, but Buddha was the first person in India during that time to denounce the caste system. Although Buddhism does not recognize the caste system, in Sri Lanka, the Sinhala-Buddhists do identify themselves with a caste.

In Buddhism, there is nothing called a caste system but in Sri Lanka the Buddhist monks are divided into many different Nikayas according to their caste. Even the Maha Nayaka theros are selected from a high caste.

Out of the four Buddhist Nikayas of Sri Lanka, the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters of Siyam Nikaya (Kandy) ordain people as Buddhist monks only from the HIGH CASTE into the Sinhala Buddhist order as a monk. In other words, a low caste person is not allowed to select Malwathu or Asgiri Chapters.

Since the Malwathu and Asgiri Chapters of Siyam Nikaya only accepts ordinations from people of the Govigama caste, Amarapura Nikaya was established in the early 19th century by the people of lower castes who were unhappy with this practice.
The Ramanna Nikaya is a breakaway group from the Amarapura Nikaya, established in the late 19th century, as a result of disputes over some points in the doctrine.

For example, if Punchisingho is to be ordained into the Sinhala-Buddhist order as a monk, first he has to look for a Nikaya, either Siam (Malwathu/Asgiri) or Amarapura/Ramanna according to his higher or lower caste. Unfortunately, the Siam Nikaya will refuse to accept him if he is not from the Govigama caste.

This is just one of the many differences between the True Buddhism and Sinhala-Buddhism or the ‘Sri Lankan version of Buddhism’ practiced only by the Sinhalese.

      Jagath Asoka,
As I do not know any Pali, I find that the Dhammapada Translation into English by Eknath Easwaran, with commentaries by him, is a precise factual Manual for the practice of the Dhamma. The Dhammapada does not have any additional garnishes or Rituals, and is very lucid and Direct, in its advice to anyone who wants to follow the Path. It has been said, that the ‘Dhammapada’ and the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ are the essence of the two so called ‘Religions’ of Buddhism and Christianity.

      John

      You are right!

If you go thro’ the Vedas and Upanishads, the early Hindu scriptures which are nearly 5000 years old, you will see that, it is very similar to Buddhism.

The original Hindu faith was lost to humanity; Buddha only rediscovered it and brought it back.

I can easily list more than 100 identical verses found in both the Buddhist Scriptures Tripitika and the Hindu scriptures Vedas/Upanishads/Bagawathgita (compiled by a Buddhist/Hindu scholar).

Also, most of the Jataka stories found in Buddhism are also found in Hinduism.

        Ravi,

“most of the Jataka stories found in Buddhism are also found in Hinduism”

This may be true. I do not know much about Hinduism other than the Hindu Gods what we see in our Buddhist temples. However, I always had a doubt about how these mythological Jataka stories came into Buddhist scriptures. I do not think that the Buddha would have told these Jataka tales as true stories (his previous lives). I am sure, like in all other religions where stories are incorporated to illustrate the Dhamma in a way any layperson can understand, Buddha also may have told these tales.

        Let’s consider some examples,

In Nandivisala Jataka, we have an intelligent talking bull that could pull hundred carts.

The Mirga Jataka talks about a deer that saved a drowning merchant and later preached the Dhamma to the king who was hunting.

In Sivi Jataka, king Sivi redeemed a pigeon by giving his own flesh, an exactly identical story is found in the Mahabharata.

Another Jataka story is the Kusa Fathakaya, where the Bodhisattva was born as Kusa, and married a beautiful princess Pabawathie. Sakra the king of Gods came unnoticed by any one while Pabawathie was asleep and rubbed her navel with his toe. This caused her to conceive without any sexual congress.

This is very similar to the virgin conception (mother of Jesus Christ).

I do not want to list all the Jatakas here to elaborate my point, but take a closer look at them and think, do you believe that they are true?

It can be clearly proved that the bulk of these stories which form the Jataka are pre Buddhistic and merely adaptations of Hindu tales and fables which are much older.

As you said below, clear and rational way of thinking of Gautama the Buddha made him the revolt against the superstitious beliefs and practices of the Brahminical religion of his times. It is unfortunate that after his passing away, most of the things what he condemned and discarded have crept back into Buddhism and Buddhist scriptures.

The Buddhist scriptures were written long after Lord Buddha’s passing away by disciples most of whom were Brahmins. Thus, it is not surprising that a lot of Brahminical myths and concepts, which the Buddha has discarded, crept back into the Suttras.

And the worst of all, the Pali texts of the Theravada Buddhist scriptures were believed to be written in Sri Lanka by the Sinhalese monks. Hence, the question will always remain whether the Pali texts of the Sinhalese Theravadins represent the oldest traditions which approach the actual teachings of Buddha or some spurious doctrines have been introduced along with it.

‘The Buddha himself wrote nothing, and none of his teaching was written down for at least four hundred years after his death. We therefore do not know what the Buddha taught, any more than we know what Jesus taught and today at least four schools, with sub-division in each, proclaim their own view as to what is Buddhism’.

The disappearance of original teachings and practices of Buddha are almost complete today, for the Buddhists are sunk in superstitions, idol worship and religious rituals which were condemned and discarded by Buddha. Original Buddhism has changed colors completely.

H.G. Wells (An Outline of History Page 392) has described this in a very terse language. ‘Gautama’s disciples have cared more for the preservation of his tree than of his thought, which from the first they distorted and misconceived (the Bo tree which helped him to rest his back, while achieved ‘enlightenment’, still exists and with a sapling from the original tree planted in Sri Lanka, the Sri Maha Bodi in Anuradapura , venerated and worshipped excessively)’.

Gautama Buddha achieved enlightenment at the age of thirty-five. From then until he died forty-five years later, he devoted his entire life to preaching his ethical doctrines. Yet he never paid any attention to the vitally important task of recording his message in a permanent written form.

The Scriptures of Buddhism are numerous and mutually conflicting. Buddhism employed, in the main, two languages for recording scriptures. In the Pali language are recorded the scriptures of the Hinayana sect, in the Sanskrit language those of the Mahayana sect. Both these sets of scriptures oppose each other. This makes a Hinayana – Mahayana reconciliation next to impossible. Both these languages, Pali and Sanskrit, are now virtually dead or survive only as literary curiosities.

The most striking and undisputable statement about the authenticity of the Buddhist scriptures is by Chief Monk Akuratiye Amarawansa, Chancellor of the Vidyodaya Buddhist Pirivena, Maligakanda, Colombo Scholar of the Tripitaka and Chief Monk of Southern Sri Lanka. In his preface to the Sinhala translation of Deega Nikaya, he has expressed the following:

‘The Deega Nikaya that we see today cannot be assuredly said to be the same one that was presented to the first reform council (Dharma Sangayana). Many reform councils were held subsequently and these Nikayas and divisions would have been subjected to many changes. Therefore, the most acceptable view would be that the present Deega Nikaya is a collection of sutras subjected to changes, additions and deletions taken place after the first reform council.’

The above statement deals lengthily about the amendments, additions and deletions of the sacred scriptures of Buddhism done after Buddha. Another striking point is the extraordinary differences in the chronology of Buddha’s appearance adopted by the various nations that have embraced his faith. This difference amounts to nearly two thousand years. The Chinese have the following dates for this event: B.C., 640, 767, 949, 1045 and 1130. From the Tibetan books, fourteen different dates have been collected by the learned Hungarian, Cosma de Korosi: B.C., 546, 576, 653, 752, 837, 880, 882, 884, 1060, 1310, 2135, 2139, 2144 and 2422. The Japanese date is about B.C. 1000. Fa Hian, a Chinese traveler who visited Sri Lanka in C.E. 410, says that ten days before the middle of the third moon, the King of this island was accustomed to send a preacher to proclaim the austerities and mortifications of Buddha, at the conclusion of which he declared: ‘Since his parinirvana (death) 1497 years have elapsed’, which would make the death of Buddha to be in the year B.C. 1087 (Laidlay’s Pilgrimage of Fa Hian). Hiun Thsang, another Chinese pilgrim, who wrote in C.E. 640, after his return from India, says that the accounts differ about Buddha?s death, it being fixed at 900, 1000, 1200, 1300 and 1500 years before his time.

The Mahavansa (chronology of Sri Lanka) fixes the same date for the death of Buddha and the landing of Vijaya in Sri Lanka but this date, B.C. 543, is never found in the sacred chronology of Buddhism, before it was borrowed from the chronology of Sri Lanka (Max Muller: Ancient Sanskrit Literature).

Dr. Edward Conze, in his book, ‘Buddhism, Its Essence and Development’ remarks: ‘Buddhism is a body of traditions in which few names stand out, and in which fewer dates are precisely known. It is indeed most exasperating when we try to apply our current ideas of historical criticism. Langlois and Seignobos in their textbook of historical method, state that a document whose author, date and sources from which it has come cannot be determined, is just good for nothing’. Dr. Conze goes on to remark sadly: ‘Alas, that is the case with most of the documents on which we build a history of Buddhism’.

Dr. Jagath Asoka, Please dont waste time on this as it will be like Darwins Falls theory. Lord Buddah was a son of a King whom enjoyed a good sex life and had married having kids then ran away to the jungle and started preaching all his gospel a words from Satan. 1st thing that he dose is that stating ” No CREATOR ” and then he insist men not to marry which created today’s Gnanasar and several Gaymens. I strongly believe drop this and embrace God and dont waste your time.

Mr Anti B, I am a Christian but I am saddened by your words. Please enter a discussion with facts to prove your case or refrain from saying nasty things simply because there are some false teachers masquerading as Buddhists. Deal with the rascals who use religion for their own evil purposes not the philosophy itself. But like Dr Asoka says, if you want a serious and intelligent discussion than, I am sure that is acceptable and you have every right to question even the foundations of any faith, if done sincerely and not with malice.

      Dear Ant-B,

In the Name of Trinity, The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit, please do the following.

      1. Read, the Old Testament ( The Jewish Bible) and the New Testament ( The Christian Bible(), and any other versions of the Bibles you can get to.

      2. Read about historical Jesus. For example, the Zealot.

      3. Then use your God Given intelligence to look at reality, instead of being drowned in Children’s stories and fairy tales.

You did not commit any sins when you were born, and neither did Adam and Eve commit any Sins, because they evolved, and there was no need for Jesus.

      http://www.amazon.com/Zealot-Life-Times-Jesus-Nazareth/dp/140006922X

Two thousand years ago, an itinerant Jewish preacher and miracle worker walked across the Galilee, gathering followers to establish what he called the “Kingdom of God.” The revolutionary movement he launched was so threatening to the established order that he was captured, tortured, and executed as a state criminal.

Within decades after his shameful death, his followers would call him God.

Sifting through centuries of mythmaking, Reza Aslan sheds new light on one of history’s most influential and enigmatic characters by examining Jesus through the lens of the tumultuous era in which he lived: first-century Palestine, an age awash in apocalyptic fervor. Scores of Jewish prophets, preachers, and would-be messiahs wandered through the Holy Land, bearing messages from God. This was the age of zealotry—a fervent nationalism that made resistance to the Roman occupation a sacred duty incumbent on all Jews. And few figures better exemplified this principle than the charismatic Galilean who defied both the imperial authorities and their allies in the Jewish religious hierarchy.

Balancing the Jesus of the Gospels against the historical sources, Aslan describes a man full of conviction and passion, yet rife with contradiction; a man of peace who exhorted his followers to arm themselves with swords; an exorcist and faith healer who urged his disciples to keep his identity a secret; and ultimately the seditious “King of the Jews” whose promise of liberation from Rome went unfulfilled in his brief lifetime. Aslan explores the reasons why the early Christian church preferred to promulgate an image of Jesus as a peaceful spiritual teacher rather than a politically conscious revolutionary. And he grapples with the riddle of how Jesus understood himself, the mystery that is at the heart of all subsequent claims about his divinity.

Zealot yields a fresh perspective on one of the greatest stories ever told even as it affirms the radical and transformative nature of Jesus of Nazareth’s life and mission. The result is a thought-provoking, elegantly written biography with the pulse of a fast-paced novel: a singularly brilliant portrait of a man, a time, and the birth of a religion.

The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school. When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

          ela kolla,

Amarasiri neither was or is an Alter Boy or Samanera( Training Monk) Boy and never had the opportunity to be “treated” by a Priest or a Monk.

Heard of many others who were “treated” by Monks and Priests.

          See below.

Most of the Sinhala-Buddhists in Sri Lanka believe in some spurious doctrines (unbuddhist) and say the following:

      1. The Hindu God Vishnu is a Bodhi Sathwa who is practicing to become a Buddha in his future life and the next Maithriya Buddha will be born in Sri Lanka.

      2. Buddha selected Sri Lanka and made three magical trips, in order to prepare the formal introduction of Buddhism two centuries after his death.

      3. Buddha assigned the Sinhala race to protect the Buddha Dhamma (Buddhism) which will prevail in its pure form only in Sri Lanka for 5000 years.

      4. Therefore, both Sri Lanka and Buddhism belongs to the Sinhala race, others (Tamils) can live and follow but should not be encouraged to join the Maha sangha.

A society sets it own codes of conduct in furtherance of it,s own interest. The priest and the censor are similar to the policeman tasked with the responsibility of regulating such conduct and there is nothing religious about that. It’s all in the mind of the people who are in that society. That is all there is,and no more.If one dissects the phenomenon he will understand why religious people play the part of the thought police.Otherwise they will lose their monopoly business interests.

    Well, where does one begin?

Mind is the creator. Thus, control and mastery of the mind leads one to her/her salvation. Its that simple really.

How does one know mind is “the creator” ? Lookup a scientific experiment known as the double slit experiment. Mere observation changes how particles behave. Quantum mechanics agrees with Buddhism.

Well said Vibushana. It really is that simple. One can examine the mango and comment on it’s colour and beauty and biological origins etc etc but never know its tatste. The doctor should leave all books, theory and the Pali canon alone. If he practices meditation by watching his thoughts arise and die he will know for himself all that is worth knowing.

Out of all religions, I found Gautama Buddha’s philosophy more rational than others, but it is unfortunate that after his passing away, most of the things he condemned and discarded have crept back into Buddhism and the Buddhist scriptures.

Buddhism in Sri Lanka is unique; it is not Theravada Buddhism but Sinhala Buddhism, a racist political religion based mostly on Mahavamsa and not Tripitika, practiced by only one ethnic group who believes that it only belongs to them.

Tell me, was Lord Buddha a racist to choose only the Sinhala race to sustain his philosophy?

Even Ven. Dr. Walpola Rahula was a Racist when he was living.

Buddha’s first step toward enlightenment was his abandonment of his wife and child, and Buddhism (like Catholicism) still exalts male monasticism as the epitome of spirituality. It seems legitimate to ask whether a path that turns away from aspects of life as essential as sexuality and parenthood is truly spiritual. From this perspective, the very concept of enlightenment begins to look anti-spiritual: It suggests that life is a problem that can be solved, a cul-de-sac that can be, and should be, escaped.

In Sri-Lanka at least I have seen this child-monks form the base of Buddhist power in society. Buddhist monks hold significant influential power in society and politics and that comes with their large numbers. So more child-monks mean more future security, the priestly power will continue with the base covered. It is no more the noble path the Great Gautam sought 2500 years ago, rather, child-monk phenomena is a way to hold onto influential power and prestige by swelling the recruitment base by turning children into monks. Obviously it must be that grown up citizens don’t show up at the temples wanting to be priests, perhaps very rarely, but its unheard of.

The overall well-being of the child is never considered. To justify that temple provides the child with all needs in ample is a cruel argument. Its like saying, I will treat my child servant very nicely and respectfully but still the child must be my servant.

Ordination of Children as Buddhist Monks is Child Abuse that should be stopped.

Do you know that so many young children in Norway and particularly children of immigrant parents have been taken into foster care by force. Often Norwegian authorities accuse immigrant mothers of being unfit to take care of their children before they legally snatch them.

One story says, the child rights authorities of Norway decided to visit the home of a Bengali mother to see her baby being breast fed. After observing her for one hour every week, the Norwegians decided, that the mother was unfit to look after the baby because she fed the baby with fingers. Likewise many boys and girls aged between three and one were put into foster homes. The new parents speak a different language and probably look alien and frightening to babies. I bet Norwegians are on a mission with an ulterior and a tactic to force assimilate the new but reluctantly welcomed immigrants. Is that kind of legal snatching not child abuse.

Having said that let me tell you that no young or old will be accepted at any Buddhist temple without approval by parents or guardians leave out snatching. In case of a married man wanting to be a monk he must first obtain the approval of his wife and so on. Also a monk can leave his monkhood anytime he desires to do so. You know nothing about Buddhist monks or rules applicable to them. Seems, you are judging them from your perspective and a odd story or two.

        Gautham Siddharthan,

First step towards enlightenment was witnessing those 04 i.e, an Old Man, A sick, a Dead body, A monk (Hindu ?) who was in search of truth of life )
Just imagine how many Old, Sick, dead bodies & monks we have seen in our life ?
Have we ever thought where we were going ? From where did we come ?
        We do not have a time to think from where we came fro, the day we were born. Are we so busy ? Yes;

We do not have time to think until die, where we would be going , after the death, Why ? We are kept / we keep ourselves so busy until death. Isn’t it ?

By witnessing those 04 signs( King made it a point , not to allow Prince Siddhartha to see those ) , only once & accidentally , Buddha to be understood fallacy of life , so decided to see the truth.; why ? because of the vast intelligence he brought from his birth ( millions of years of good deeds in Sansara made him most intelligent ever to be born among Humans? yes , that’s the only way to describe it.

Due to our lack of intelligence (less good deeds in Sansara,? is there any other way of describing this ?) won’t put us to the position of understanding truth , life & death & WHY of OUR Existence in this world., even after seeing thousands of Old/Sick/dead bodies & truth finders.

        Abandoning Wife /Child.

Prince Siddhartha left the day Rahula was born, same night, He knew His Father, (King of State) & His wife Princess, (Daughter of the King of neighboring State) had ample wealth & give love , affection to the Wife & Child. Siddhartha himself had 03 Palaces.

(though I still disagree with abandoning Child & Wife), I believe we should not try to analyse those with our brain & thoughts, perhaps beyond our comprehension.

        • 0
          0

John ‘abandoning Child & Wife’ is something that is greatly misunderstood. For Siddhartha there was something worse than leaving wife and child. That was the certain knowledge that both of them and all those he loved would fall ill and grow old and die. Leaving wife and child was one of the prices he had to pay to find the answers to these problems. He left them because he loved them, he left them to save them.

Consider a man leaving his sick wife and child to go and find medicine for their illness. Would we reprimand him for this?
For Siddhartha, his wife and child were ill and no cure was available.

Buddha’s first step toward enlightenment was his abandonment of his wife and child

And yet 400 million people around world see past this. Its must be something so profound that one can easily excuse one for leaving a family behind?

Bikkhu Samitha is a former Nowegian surgeon who has become a monk. Here he is with his child.
        http://tinyurl.com/lvbrtfz .

Becoming a monk is giving up all wordly possessions including family. Its the ultimate “letting go”. Attachment to life and posessions is what perpetuate the deceit “I am” and “mine”.

Why can’t the readers help the good Doctor with his quest? Some of the negative comments sickens me.

Dr. Asoka can start with the Holy Quran and how it was compiled. The revelations was memorised by the Prophet and his followers and put in a written form within a few years after his death. The revelation is still in the original form for the past 1500 years.

There are millions of Muslims who have memorised the Holy Quran from cover to cover. No religious books have ever been memorised like the Holy Quran. Is there a greater miracle than that?

Yes, Dr. Asoka, start with the Holy Quran. As a Scientist, the scientific contents will open your mind.

The Holy Prophet called it as the greatest miracle. Read it.

Why is memorisation of a book the greatest miracle, It’s just a book.

      • 0
        0

Is there any scriptures that can be memorised like the Holy Quran – 114 chapters? It will take around 24 hrs of non-stop reciting. This is ONE portion of the miracle. Read the sciences in the Holy Quran revealed 1500 years ago including Big Bang Theory, Gynecology, etc. This is another part of the miracle.

        • 0
          0

You sound absurd to claim “Big Bang theory” was mentioned in the holy Quran, as absurd as all those Hindutva supporters who claim all manner of scientific achievement was known about by ancient Hindus.

Again what makes rote memorisation the “greatest miracle” ? I (my own opinion ofcourse) would say the greatest miracles would involve persons with terminal illness and negligible possibility of survival being cured, or entire groups of people being saved by some unexplained natural phenomena whos odds are infinitesimal.

          • 0
            0

From a individual perspective it is not a miracle to memorize the Quran. with quality 5 to 6 years a person can memorize it. But when you have at least 30 million living today who have memorized it and every year about a million added. Now that is something serious enough.

What some scientists say about Islam…

Why is it even a miracle just because millions do it; it just means the religion is strict about its adherents memorising said book.

I have yet to see any proof that Islamic scholars were able to hypothise Big Bang theory with scientific precision.

          • 0
            0

Memorising the Holy Quran and reciting for about 24 hrs by heart is a miracle only the disbelievers will deny. Is there any scriptures where millions have memorised ad-verbetim? If this is not a miracle in itself, what is?.

Now read the contents which constitute the other part of the miracle: “Have not those who disbelieved known that the heavens and the earth were one connected entity, then We separated them?..
            [Noble Quran 21:30]

Here is ths site to learn about sciences revealed 1500 years ago:

I could counter that only believers with their bias will claim it is a miracle. Ultimately it is just memorisation of a book, that which is made possbile by the strict and demanding direction of Muslim elders.
Brahmins also put stock into memorisation of some their scripture, so there is nothing miraculous about rote learning, and nothing special about it to be called “miraculous”.

              Goraka,
Sura 2:117, says; “Be! And it is”. That means creation was done instantaneously. But Sura 7:54, 10:3, 11:7, and 25:59 clearly illustrate how the job was done in six days just like genesis in the Old Testament. But if you add up the Job duration in Sura 41:9 to 41:12, the number of days for creation come to (8) eight.

Leave out the Big Bang, tell us how come Allah his mouthpiece has made the error.

          • 0
            0

There is no compulsion to memorize it, it is voluntary. Not saying it is miracle as per definition or dictionary. But if people have voluntarily memorized it for 1400 years and if it is the only book so, then that is something to ponder, beats the odds. It is a sign for those who look for.

Muslims believe all the prophets who lived in the universe. There are 124000 prophets lived in the universe as Islam says. But in Quran only 25 names mentioned. So, there is no holy prophet in Islam. But Last and final prophet/Messenger of GOD is Muhammed (Pbuh) who was the most successful man in the universe.

          Thanks, Pbuh, no Holy’s.

“Muslims believe all the prophets who lived in the universe. There are 124000 prophets lived in the universe as Islam says. But in Quran only 25 names mentioned. So, there is no holy prophet in Islam. “

          1. Universe had only 124,000 prophets, and only 25 names mentioned for Earth? This leaves, 123,975 unmentioned Prophets.

Question: Are these 123,975 Prophets on Earth or are they all scattered all over the Universe?

          Can you clarify this?

Islam says there were many scriptures sent to the universe…as well as many prophets born in the universe to guide human..

123,975 prophets who were these guys? Can be Lord Krishna?, Can be Lord buddha?..etc etc…….Nobody knows…………..but it is possible.

      Dr Asoka,
Studying Buddhism can take quit a long time. some thoughts to keep in mind…

When studying the Vedhas or the Upanishadhs keep in mind to observe “one single super god” concept.
      The original words used.
You may even come across the word “mahmeth” in the Hindu scriptures.

Remember there were Buddha’s before Gauthama Buddha.
Ultimately what the Buddha found was the “middle path” and to live 24 hrs in full meditation.
      There is something called “jhiana”

Remember when you read the Quran,
Islam is all about the Middle path,
Been fully conscious in every act you do (24 hrs) with one focus.
perform “jihadh” every moment of your life. ( remember to link to “jhihana” in Buddhism.)

You will find that you can be a “Practicing Buddhist” easily by been a Muslim.

    Jagath,
If you have some understanding of the core of Chritianity or Hindunism, then you know the essence of Buddhisum too. The essence as I understand is there is no Separation and understanding of “Oneness” (new word used by Dalai Lama)
Buddha goes beyond this by explaining how to Unlearn your perception or your knowledge (including Buddha Dharma) to attain total awareness. For lot of people (fools like me) this is only a theoretical state.
If you want to realize the Buddha Dhamma as a laymen, listen to Dalai Lama or North Thailand monks (Ajan Cha’s pupil). If you want to become Enlighten or gain total awareness of your conscious, sub-conscious, un-conscious mind, then following Lama or Japanese Zen practices may be way to go.
No God’s or Theruwan blessings, you are on your own….

      Anura (and Jagath),

“No God’s or Theruwan blessings, you are on your own….”

      – theruwan saranai – තෙරුවන් සරණයි – May you be protected by triple gem
      – budu saranai – බුදු සරණයි – May you be protected by the noble power of Lord Buddha.

Theruwan includes the Monks, the BBS and Other Undesirables, as the 3rd Gem. So, do not say that. Don’t ask for the blessings of the criminals.

Say, – budu saranai – බුදු සරණයි , better, but still based on belief.

The Pāli Canon (Pali: Tipitaka) is the standard collection of scriptures in the Theravada Buddhist tradition, as preserved in the Pāli language.[1] It is the most complete extant early Buddhist canon.[2] It was composed in North India, and preserved orally until it was committed to writing during the Fourth Buddhist Council in Sri Lanka in 29 BCE, approximately four hundred and fifty four years after the death of Shākyamuni.[3][4][5]…

According to the Sri Lankan Mahavamsa, the Pali Canon was written down in the reign of King Vattagāmini (Vaṭṭagāmiṇi) (1st century BCE) in Sri Lanka, at the Fourth Buddhist council. Most scholars hold that little if anything was added to the Canon after this,[40] though Schopen questions this.

    ( source …Web..Pali cannon…)

Buddhism in Sri Lanka originates with the arrival of Arahath Mahinda with his disciples .. He was accepted by the King Devanampiyatissa who might have been a relative or Son of Emperor Asoka the great who ruled India …It was the Kings decision that Buddhism given the same status as the Hindu Gods they worship at that time by the kings court..the King IF he was independent as we claim now would not have accepted anything whole heartedly. Besides, the first Sri Lankans to ordain as monks had been the Kings relatives ..members of his.Council.

Since then it became a subject of the Kings of this Country..the Buddhists monks were not independent of the Kings … the great drought …” Baminitisaaya ” was a clear example of this. The villages infact cut off the supply sources to Monks who were in wilderness in search of food …water..

The Mahawamsa had been written by the Buddhist Monk named Mahanama in the 5th Century..to suit the Kings… the popular belief of Sri Lankan Buddhists and monks is that it is the State that should protect ..nurture it..as done by the ancient Kings….as such the monks depended on the King for survival ..involved in Politics. Today they run separately but HUNT together…

What is practiced in Sri Lanka is not the true Buddhism…but a distorted version perverted by 99% of monks.

    Dr. Jagth Askoka:

You talk like a LOW IQ person.

What is important is the content given in those texts.

    Read KALAMA Sutta.

In that say, buddha says, investigate everything and don’t accept becaose of what ever the reason. So, read all those books if what is said in those books are not acceptable then talk.

You say so many religions. Man that is vague stuff. Give examples. Don’t embarrass even the university which gave you those letters “Dr”.

I question your doctorate, is it via the post ?

    Your motives are simply disgusting.

      Jim Softy,

Address the issues and questions raised. Don’t try to prosecute like what the Church did to Galileo.

If Buddhism, Hinduism or the Abrahamic religions cannot stand on its own, so be it.

Yes, the Earth moves and goes around the Sun, contrary to the teaching of the Church and as written in the Bible.

The good Dr. earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry, a science subject, and not by memorizing 12,000 pages of the Tipitaka, the Bible or the Quran. Still he is asking very valid and intelligent questions. Help him. May be he can prove or disprove Nibbana, Nrvana, Rebirth, Samsara, Hell, Heaven, Limbo or the Purgatory. Let him carry out the experiment.

He may find the phases or Venus or the transit of Venus, like what Galileo and Kepler did 400 years ago.

    Asoka,

Understanding Buddhism is like trying to learn how to swim or how to ride a bicycle.

For you the best start is not to worry about big issues but start simple, like H2O is water.

Try first reading the book “What the Buddha Taught,” by Ven. Walpola Rahula. This is the textbook used in USA in Intro to Religion courses.

In a formula form Buddhism is 4NT+8NP (four noble truths and eight noble paths).

You can write to me cwije7@gmail.com for further communication.

In Buddhism, there is no soul (Atma) because nothing can be eternal in the universe (nothing is permanent), all conditioned thing is called to change, to disappear.

If there is no soul, you cannot have a reincarnation. Reincarnation of a soul, a being, a mind, spirit…etc does not exist.

Nevertheless, there is a reincarnation theory in Buddhism. Every new life is going to be strongly (but not totally) influenced by its Karma ( the sum of the actions previous lives). What your next life form will be is directly link to how you act now!

        Kandasamy,
Buddha has described human body and the functions of our nervous systems; sensing, feeling, thinking, recognizing, forming opinions, being aware. In Samyutta Nikaya 22:59, the Buddha taught us that these five ‘parts,’ including our consciousness, are not ‘self.’ They are impermanent, and clinging to them as if they were the permanent ‘me’ gives rise to greed and hate, and to the craving that is the source of suffering.

Mahayana Buddhism goes further than Theravada, and teaches that all phenomena are without self-essence. The teaching in the Anatta-lakkhana Sutta is called ‘anatta,’ sometimes translated ‘no self.’ This basic teaching is accepted in all schools of Buddhism, including Theravada. Anatta is a refutation of the Hindu belief in atman – a soul; an immortal essence of self.

May I suggest, you download ‘The Buddha and His Teachings’ by Narada to understand Buddhism in nutshell.

Dr Asoka, you are in search of Truth. The Truth which will make your soul accept and find fulfilment.. Do Please read the Holy Qur’an and the Hadiths, the traditions of the Prophet Muhammed (May Peace Be Upon Him)
Not a single full stop or a comma has changed in the Holy Qur’an for the 1500 years. It is in the heart of millions of Muslim children in the world. I really felt and guided to the correct path. Your quest for search will end here. Good Luck Dr Asoka.

Dr Asoka, You’ll go mad if you try to read the Koran. Its a bit and pieces that angel Gabriel said to have read through Muhammad. Koran doesn’t start from the first word of Gabriel. It has no beginning and no end.

If you have specific questions and you want answers, I suggest, you read ‘thereligionofpeace’ web site. Good luck to you.

    Hey Anti B – October
You really are a born again and again, freak with Satan in one hand. How you hate other religions? If you believe in miracles, please do so! Do not challenge philosophy the way some want to rationalize. Like the BBS jerks you have another kind of Christianity of hatred not love jesus preached!! What a pathetic soul you are hating others and burning inside on earth itself; there will be nothing left to burn in hell! Go to a retreat with someone who understands real Christianity not with other jerks like you!!!

Any one who is interested in learning early Buddhism can find million of articles in early Buddhism by just googling “early Buddhism”, “history of pali canon” etc.

This is another attempt to discredit BBS.

BBS is responding what Muslims doing to Sri Lanka. They have dozered Sinhalese heritage completely in the East. Sinahelse even cannot go to Katthankudy. Many towns they walk around face closed. They want to build mosques every inch.

    • 0
      0

The Christians and Muslims are happy to share and propagate their religions to the entire world where as the problem with Sinhala-Buddhists is they want to keep their religion to themselves (only) without giving it to others as if Gautama Buddha introduced Buddhism only for the Sinhalese and to hide their hypocrisy they come up with stupid arguments such as *ehei passika*, and at the same time they want to attack others (violently) when they try to do their duty by sharing and propagating their religions. Whether the conversion is ethical or unethical, you have no right to attack others, you have to correct your own.

If the poor Buddhists are getting converted to Christianity or Islam there is something wrong with the Buddhist institutions and the clergy, the people have lost the spirit and faith. Instead of finding the root cause and solving it, attacking the Christian and Muslim institutions is not going to stop anything, it can only suppress temporarily.

But unfortunately in Sri Lanka, the Sinhala-Buddhists never think rationally, they only use barbaric methods to suppress without addressing the root cause and that is why all the problems keep continuing.

The Sinhala-Buddhists in Sri Lanka are Backward, Primitive, narrow minded, Racist, Fanatic, Barbaric, Inhumane, Submissive insane society worse than Taliban that expects the government to enforce selective morality that suits only to one section of the people.
For this reason they have created the BBS, the Buddhist Talibans.

“I am interested in the origin of the Buddhist Scripture and the oral tradition that led to the compilation of the Pali canon.”

As you are aware Gautama was born in India and that’s where your answer lies but there are 3 reasons you won’t find it.
1.The language of the kings was Rajas (lost for ever) the administrative language was Sanskrit (classical presently used only at Dera Dun) and finally Pali which was only spoken then.
2.The low caste Hindus even today are asked to embrace Buddhism so that there won’t be any conflict.
3.The Mughal conquest of India- The Islamic invaders destroyed almost all the Jain Hindu Buddhist temples especially in the north and with the same stone built their mosques. You can see those stones in their Masjids even today at Old Delhi therefore north Indians have to travel to south India for their religious pilgrimages.
Try getting your information from a Rin Poche (reborn) and then work backwards or from Bhutan the Buddhist kingdom.
Good Luck. To me all religions are emotions and God is a concept we cannot conceive.

The truth is eternal, it cannot change with time. People try to interpret the timeless teachings to suit their own ends which results in chaos and conflict.

Today we see the emergence of various sects and cults which desecrate the pristine teachings and lead people astray. The human being has the capacity to separate the chaff from the grain. The truth can be easily identified provided one is not overcome by ones greed and desires.

The sins and vices of the world cloud ones ability to think and act rationally. That is why the buddha left the worldly life to seek the truth. This is true of all religons.

Jagath – If you find that ‘The Four Noble Truths’ makes sense, try practicing ‘The Eightfold Path’. That, to me, is the essence of what the Buddha taught. What more is there to ‘investigate’???

Jagath Asoka is a perfect Idiot.

without reading books, how did you get a PhD in Chemistry, if you honestly have one ?

In order to understand buddhism, just learn Every thing buddha said was Don’t do bad things (that includes you and every one). Improve upon good things you do and purify your mind always.

If you say you haven’t heard that much being A Sinhalese, you should be the ultimate idiot. Because, you read so much books in order to learn chemistry. You can not read one book to understand the buddhism.

    Jagath Asoka:

Idiots like you find difficult to understand buddhism. If you know how to search in Google see how American military is teaching mindfulness meditation it’s soldiers, how Meditation is used in Scientific experiments and in psychotherapy.

First understand the bible is fiction. Bible contains some statements supposed to have made By Jesus and all others are written by his followers.

I don’t think quran should be taken here. Because you are a christian who does not like to identify yourself as a Christian.

Generally we can believe that Devotees of Abrahamic religions hate Buddhism because buddhism does not believe in the one and only Almighty god.

If you have at least a brain size of a pea nut, read the GRAND DESIGN BY STEPHEN HAWKING who says that there is no need of a creator to happen all the things that has and had happened in the universe.

Your comments above shows how illogical you are… No wonder why you completely misinterpreted the current situation in SL….. But sadly, you believe you understood a lot… Once Even boasted about reading Grand Design by Hawkins……

    JAgaath Asoka:

Now only I browsed through your previous article.

You look like simply a shameless human being with any self -respect.

You yourself have behaved like a dog when you have not ever read about buddhism and supposedly you know only about Abrahamic religions.

For your information: Remember Jesus was a humanitarian and what he told was LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR. IT is the ROMAN KINGDOM which said CONQUER and that is what the Church does. bible is fiction as I said earlier. Only an Idiot would accept that as the truth.

the problem with quran is ALmighty being so almighty had taken 23 years to give the total messaged to write the quran. Yet, that particular almighty has given the same message that is the old testament as well as in the Hebrew bible.

Bible has so many editions and some editions say kill the infidels.

If you are an intelligent person, if you are honestly ready, give us facts and an article with details and not with vague statements.

This Jagath Asoka is talking RELIGIOUS HATRED AND RELIGIOUS INTOLERANCE.

BUDDHISM IS A PEACEFUL RELIGION and buddhists never engaged in violence in the name of religion. WE never had crusades or conquests.

when other religious devotees devotees preach RELIGIOUS HATRED WE HAVE TO TALKS EVEN THOUGH THAT IS THE BUDDHIST WAY.

Sri Lanka, a country with majority of people following Buddhism has become a country of intolerance, massacre, genocide and war crimes. Even the Sinhalese are ashamed of calling themselves as Sri Lankans after the exposure of war crimes of Sinhalese army. The elected leader of this country, Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa claims to be a Buddhist supported by Buddhist monks.

If the learned “Dr. Asoka” cannot understand buddhist texts, that must be because Buddhism is more complicated than Chemistry !! :)

No theisic religion ( those that believe in God )can ever explain how and why God came into existence. That cancels the basic premise of all theistic religion such as Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

As for Buddhism, parts of it are very close to scientifc theory.
ie: (i)The source of Energy is a msytery, (ii) energy is not permanent and is in constant flux ( similar to Buddhist anitya – no permanent soul – theory ) and (iii) Newtons 3rd law is comparable to karmic theory. However the theory of Nirvana and rebirth is more more difficult to prove.

As for the Hindus here who try to argue that Buddhism came from Hinduism , that is like saying oranges and apples are the same. Buddhism rejects a permanet soul (hindus believe in a permanet soul called atman ),rejects the theory of a creator God ( Hindus believe in Brahman, the creator ) and also reject caste ( Hindus do believe in caste ) and animal scarifice ( Hindus sacrifice to kali)

Buddhism though not perfect is probably the most logical and harmless of the current spiritual theories, especially as buddha specifically says not to believe him blindly ( totally different from Theistic prophets who demand that their word should be accepted as the TRUTH ).

The Real TRUTH is we are all big jackasses who are groping in the dark but trying to prove to the others that our faith is the TRUE faith when tha fact is we don’t know JACK. It is all FAITH ( speculation )

This DR with a Chermistry PhD does not know that Hinduism is collection of many religions.

some hindus are against buddhism while some Hindus are with buddhism and they say buddhism is part of Hinduism. SOme hindus such as those worship goddess Kali give hundreds of animals to sacrifice to appease the goddess while Buddhists do not believe in killing or harming any animal.

“It is all FAITH ( speculation )”

Well stated. I would say All Myths, until proven otherwise, in order to maintain the Monk-Priest-Mullah Hegemony.

See how may other Myths have been proven to be incorrect.

      -Flat Earth
-Earth Balanced on the Horns of Bulls, by Elephants, Turtles etc.
      -Sun goes round the Earth
-Walking on water, turning water into wine, rising from the dead, virgin births, etc.
-Nibbana, Nirvana, Rebirth, Samsara, Hell, Heaven, Limbo, Purgatory and so on.

      Jim Softy,

It is probably Thermodynamics, Statistical Thermodynamics, and Quantum Mechanics and something like that.

You or BBS will not be able to make head or tail out of these fields, as they are NOT based on Myths of Monk Mahaname Mahawamsa Fame-Notoriety and Many other Myths of the Tipitaka and other Abraham scriptures.

      Enjoy.

[As far as I am aware, it took more than 200 years for Buddhists to write down the words of the Buddha. We simply do not know how accurate and reliable these words are because the monks who memorized these words are not alive today for me to question them and interrogate them to find out whether they added their own words.]

    JAgath Asoka:

You are not an honest person. what you are doing is just degrading buddhism because you are christian. You say even the christianity had oral tradition. but, you have problems with buddhist oral tradition.

I don’t think you know even the SCIENTIFIC METHOD. if the person is that knowledgeable he would not talk this stupid.

    Remember
bible is FICTION. It has written by many others with things said supposedly by the JEsus.

Buddhist Canon is All buddha’s word. BuddhA HAD SAID NOT TO ACCEPT ANYTHING blindly. READ KALAMA SUTHTHA, IF YOU ARE NOT AN LOW CLASS IDIOT.

    Jagath Asoka,

Here are links to e-books, free, you can spend some time on. Enjoy.

Unlike with the New Testament, there was no Roman Historian like Josephus to refer to in Buddhism for historical Buddha.

You mat read Buddha and the ospel of Buddhism by Ananda K.Coomaraswamy, ISBN, 81-215-0096-6,FIRST PUBLISHED FEBRUARY 8, 1916, and not contaminated by the Sinhala Buddhist Chauvinism.

Memorized for many generations until it was written down in the 1st Century BCE at Aluvihare, Sri Lanka.

Sinhalayas should give up Buddhism and go back to their animistic ways. In common with the Thais and Burmese, they have excelled in killing other human beings and thus bringing a bad name to Buddhism. Even before, the Sihalayas had the highest murder rate in the world. Something is wrong with them from the Mahavamsa days. It is best that they do not corrupt Buddhism any further.

While we treasure freedom of expression, I can not but notice the venomous anti buddhist forces at play on Colombotelegraph website. As someone pointed out earlier “dogs may bark, but the caravan moves on”.

This is an account of Sri Lanka just over a century ago. I know most of the writers on this forum must be pinching themselves thinking ” How wonderful if we could have continued the same way up until today?”

“In Ceylon, British regarded Theosophy (promoted by Col. HS Olcott, Annie Besant et.al)as seditious. It questioned one of the very bases of British presence in the country: Namely the superiority of Christianity over Buddhism. .. Olcott even took part in the Buddhist protest against christian missions : INJUSTICES SUCH AS THERE BEING 805 CHRISTIAN SCHOOLS AGAINST JUST 4 BUDDHIST SCHOOLS; Furthermore, Christian marriage was the only legal form of marriage”.

What this meant was the opportunist were drawn in to Christianity in large numbers and the rest is history.

The effects of these injustices are felt in our society even today: in the professions, wealth distribution and many more.

Needless to say such an imbalance is not desirable ..
