Bogeymen Emerging As Saints; Cronyism & 2020

By Vishnu Gupta

W. Vishnu Gupta

If cumulative total of promises made by all governments of cronyism since 1953 were fulfilled, Sri Lankan economy would have been ranked number one. Sri Lankans would have been the richest and happiest in the world. Furthermore, country’s name would have changed into “Shangri-La”. What a paradox, the same men and their siblings have begun to hoodwink the masses by revamping the same promises for unsuspecting voters with the hope of winning next presidency.

So far Oligarchies controlling the government and the opposition, vying for power in 2020 in the presidential election and general elections have been very active in confusing the electorate with stories about leading contenders with the help of spin doctors and diehard cohorts. They are in real frenzy in promoting their self-centered preferred candidate. The names surfaced in recent days from both oligarchies are “Bogeymen” responsible for misery imposed on the people of Sri Lanka.  The individuals named so far from both oligarchy camps, have been frantically active in Buddhist temples, Hindu Temples, Moslem Mosques and Christian churches. These are vile individuals driven by greed and insecurity, if all of them loose the opportunity, they are certain that their future is very bleak and perhaps rest of their lives will be spent in heavily guarded prisons. Also, they cherish the idea and take comfort in knowing that if one of them becomes the President or Prime Minister, no matter whatever the party or symbol the loosing contenders of two oligarchy camps will be protected and let off scot-free permitting their hedonistic lives unabated.

Only in Sri Lanka, bogeymen are introduced to the electorate as saints. Leading Buddhist monks, Moslem Clergies, Hindu Priests and Christian Clergies promote these bogeymen or gongos (Kerala version) or billas (Sri Lankan version) as saints or saviors of the fragmented nation. These clergies wearing different robes must share the responsibility for inflicting misery on the people of Sri Lanka. Some have gone on records for uttering unacceptable judgments on the behavior of these vile bogeymen including one monk demanding a Hitler like figure.  Some of these bogeymen are alleged to have squandered the national treasury, tortured and murdered the citizens, aided and abated criminal activities, laundered money and denied the basic rights of Sri Lankan citizens; food, clothes, shelter and health.

Democracy is a Mockery

Sri Lankan Oligarchies since 1953 have made every effort to control power through various schemes. The first and the most everlasting detrimental scheme was conceived by bogeyman SWRD Bandaranaike with the creation of Sinhala Maha Sabah and its obnoxious divisive anti-democratic policies.  Unfortunately, leading Buddhist monks, Ayurvedic Doctors, Teachers, Farmers and a handful of leading labor leaders fell for this self-centered pukkah sahib’s political trap. This gongo threw the dice to become Prime Minister on the shoulders of unsuspecting innocent Buddhist voters but the entire nation have been paying the price until now and it will continue if the people are naïve to elect any of the bogeymen suggested by the oligarchies. The Tamils of Vellala caste, must equally take the responsibility for the injustices faced by Sri Lankans. These powerful blocks of Vellala politicians have never suffered any economic or privilege setbacks due to the actions of oligarchies leading the corrupt government in Colombo. Thousands of civilians and innocent military personnel were killed during the 30 year war that ravaged every region of Sri Lanka. Oligarchies of the south and Vellala Tamil venal leaders understand very well conflict between Sinhalese and Tamils will always keep them alive, active and sustain their corruption fed families guided by hedonism. All vile political parties including that of oligarchies of different hue and color have come to know “CONFLICT IS GOOD” axiom. It feeds their families and supports their nefarious activities with impunity under the bogus and adulterated democracy of the country.

Masters of diversionary tactics

The bogeymen (Gongos) are the masters of deceits and they are driven by Machiavellian principles. They will always use smoke and mirror techniques to bamboozle the voters in Sri Lanka. For instances; recent debates launched by oligarchies, Vellala Tamil politicians and other chauvinistic politicians on Constitutional council, New Constitution, Elimination of Executive Presidency, Cabinet ministers addicted to drugs, UNHCR reports and Shortage of cabinet ministers. None of these debates are relevant to the development of living condition or standards of average Sri Lankan irrespective of their ethnicity or religion. Yet the venal politicians occupying the parliament of Sri Lanka and presidency have been executing many diversionary tactics to avoid major national issues directly related to upliftment of the masses from economic misery since 1953. In that process these bogeymen and their cohorts are alleged to have ransacked the national treasury, laundered money, built mansions, accumulated wealth for their families and henchmen for many generations. Above all, these bogeymen and their families have fortified their habitat with the help of vile businessmen, professional and administrative groups.

Alternative to existing malaise

Purported democracy and our economy have become increasingly docile during last four years. It is obvious that voters due to their gullible nature have substituted the crony socialism of the UPLF with crony capitalism of the UNF, where the rich and the influential members of the society were alleged to have received land, natural resources, lucrative trade deals, license to operate bawdy business enterprises and spectrum in return for payoffs to vile politicians.

Bogeymen leading the pack to become either President or Prime Minister know transparency and competition is harmful to crony capitalism and to crony socialism. They have effectively shut down the economic growth by substituting special interests for the public interest. These actions have been very harmful to democratic expression in the country. It is the real truth to the widely held perceptions of crony capitalism and crony socialism. Then a natural question is why Sri Lankans tolerate it. Why do they vote for the corrupt politicians who perpetuate it?

Obviously, the higher levels of market and political monopolization promoted by the oligarchies, Vellala Tamil Politicians and other self centered political parties have contributed to the low levels of democracy, weak civil participation and low political transparency in Sri Lanka.

One widely held proposition is that Sri Lanka suffers from want of a “few good men” in politics. None of the bogeymen vying to be the next President fit into this selective group of “few good men” The party based political machinery and unwillingness of every politician to accept electoral reforms have completely shut down the emergence of any “Good” men in politics. But even if any of these “good” people stand for election as independents, they are assured to lose their deposits. Does it mean the electorate really dislikes squeaky clean government? Answer is no, The vile men in politics have hijacked the democracy in the country by rigging the constitution in favor of their everlasting grip on power either through crony capitalism or crony socialism.

Yet, Sri Lankans must not give-up their hope of finding “few good men” to govern our fragmented nation. A virtuous, intelligent, educated average man for the job of Executive Presidency should emerge to save our people. Someone who is unwilling to “work” the present system born out of corruption can promise to reform it. Let us pray collectively for the arrival of “few good men.”

I couldn’t continue reading; I got tired half way. What do you have against Vellalas? There are paupers among Vellalas. Where did you see Hindu priests promoting Tamil politicians. In Sri Lanka, Vellalas consider priests inferior to them on the caste ladder.
    .
Prayer is good for the soul, but not for anything political. Good men shun politics.

Educated populace knows to elect good leaders. It is the uneducated who fall for few gifts elect the idiots. Worst of all, to which side the clergy belong god only knows.

Visnu, good one but we must not forget the external factors in the corrupt political circus in Sri Lanka.
While the US navel base is taking shape in Trinco and the Land grab in the form of Economic zones are happening on the Southern coast – US citizen Gota who has command responsibility for war crimes and should be tried in his Home Land under US jurisdiction is providing cover and distraction for the mindless media who no longer know what investigative journalism is.

The UNHRC ritual, the war on drugs, the US citizen Gota Manchurian Candidate, the UN_P-SLFP-PP bi-partisan corruption racket, the USAID funded Bribery Commission show at Shangri la to ensue that all cases against politicians are dropped, are all part of the great game of the dying superpower to control a small island nation in the Indian Ocean in the Cold War against China.

Sunil Handnetti from the JVP would be a good man to contest. From SLFP Dayasiri Jayasekera would appeal to the Youth and seems relatively clean and independent.
SH headed COPE and brought the Bondscam to light.
He is not a dishonest demogogue. Unfortunately, AKD has taken the JVP down a rabbit hole and is distracting from the main issues of lack of Economic rights and justice and need to expose the External Washington Consensus economic war against Sri Lankan with IMF-ADB-MCC debt trap development to crash the rupee and asset strip strategic lands, ports, etc. with their Neoliberal neocon puppet Bondscam Ranil
AKD has spend 1.5 years playing a useless 20th amendment Constitutional game to abolish the already lame duck presidency. This is to grease AKD’s Presidential bid. AKD has lost track of Economic Rights and Justice is most important and is playing silly constitutional games hobnobbing with all the corrupt political party leaders

Thank you Gupta for the summery on Lanka . What you said is what Lanka,s reputation today. The politicians took the country on a downhill path with help of retarded but racial and self centered public. They still are in denial and point finger at anyone or a thing for their own problems. It is self created and there in NO hope in the horizons.

Vishnu, you wrote about the politicians and so called “religious politicians”( clergy) can you please write a summery on our stupid voters. Here are some facts to ponder. 1)How much of a causative, 2)exacerbating, 3)triggering,4)enabling and 5)predisposing role they play in the current pathology 6)Role of racism, jealousy, hatred, selfishness, self centered traits of Lankan public attributes to this chronic but end stage multi system problem (please make it simple as in medical terms for our retards to understand) 7) Role of codependency on these “Bogeymen” 8) Denial- Is a hurdle resolving a problem and our people seems to living in self created oblivion. There are more but this is just a few to start with.

      Dear Chiv;

Sri Lankans are not stupid or gullible as believed. It is the electoral system and operating mechanism; it is rigged in favour of the corrupt and rich politicians and it is protected and supported by minor political parties based on religion, language and the red shirts in the parliament. Voters are helpless, all nominated candidates by crony capitalist and crony socialist party leaders are corrupt and tainted for different reasons. Competing slots are filled by the rogues, therefore outcome at the election should not baffle the innocent voters.

A good article. Just a small issue. Unlike other religions, Hindus don’t follow what their clergy says when it comes to politics or indeed anything not connected to religion and worship. Hindus have long since realized that priests and god men are just like us lay people, with feet of clay. If anything, the less you involve them in matters unrelated to religion, the better.

Mr. Gupta 50% of the indigenous Sri Lankan Tamil population( Hindu and Christian) belong to the Vellala Caste and unlike India most of the indigenous Sri Lankan Tamil population belong to the upper or middle castes and only a minority of them are from the depressed and low castes. They are all not privileged or rich and most of them are peasants or belong to middle /upper middle classes and these people suffered immensely from the state sponsored Sinhalese racism . Their lands were confiscated ,homes , properties and businesses were burnt. They suffered immensely like the rest of the Tamil population and were not exempt just because they belonged to the Vellala or Brahmin castes. These people make up more than 95% of the Vellalar Tamils in the island. It is only a small percentage of the Vellalar , extremely rich privileged families , owning lands, industries and businesses largely in the Sinhalese south , living in the very posh suburbs of Colombo and highly integrated and intermarried with the rich Sinhalese establishment and families , that never suffered and will never suffer. These people do not care about the plight of the rest of the Tamils in the island including their own fellow Vellalar , as it does not affect them and they have never suffered. Unfortunately it was these people who were deciding the fate of the Tamils before independence and after independence. This is why Tamil rights or federalism was never given by the British at the time of independence , as the British were only consulting these rich self centred , selfish so called Colombo centred Tamil elite , who in reality were only namesake Tamils but more integrated with their Sinhalese relatives. It was the LTTE and Prapakaran who first challenged this .

There are no indigenous Tamils in this island. All Tamils are indigenous only to Tamilnadu. There were virtually no Tamils in Colombo when the British took over Colombo area from the Dutch. A good 50% of the non-Estate Tamils, especially the eastern Tamils, were brought here by the British. The tragedy of the Sinhalese is that the British not only took our wealth away, but imported people from outside, especially Tamils to do their work, ensuring lasting problems here. Our land was taken and given to Tamils in the east and the Wanni. India must look into letting the Tamils who are not happy come back to India. Much of the problem for us will be solved if the Tamils are given their right to return by India. We simply cannot have this problem going on for years to come, and our island simply do not have the space or the ability to have two separate countries. This island is only 1/60th of India corresponding to 1/2 the size of Tamilnadu, and we do not have any natural boundaries to separate the two people in two countries here. It was the Pandyan kingdom, now under India who invaded and occupied the north in the late 13th century, and colonized the area with Tamils, massacring the Sinhalese and chasing away the Sinhalese which has brought so much misery to us. As such India is obliged to look into this and do the right thing by the Sinhalese and also the Tamils, since this will also be a good solution to the Tamils as the Tamils don’t stand to lose anything, but gain much by being given the right to return to their homeland if they wish.

You have made very important points to ponder. However, your assertion “the Sinhalese never suffered and will never suffer “is false. That is what Vellalar privileged corrupt lot has been preaching to Tamils in order to profit from the theorem; “Conflict is Good”. Approximately, (90%) Ninety percent of the Sinhalese have faced the similar situation; miserable, unending poverty and hopelessness in Sri Lanka since the departure of colonialist. What you have seen in Colombo is deceptive.

Oh no Mr.Gupta though I commonly address Lankans as retards in my comment I never mentioned they are gullible. They are so smart that they pretend naive to hide their inborn racism, hatred, selfishness and self centered traits. Otherwise how on earth, explain this pattern of rotting for more than 70 years. First came the Senanayakas and then came Bandas followed by JR/RW and finally Rajapaksa , who seem not to leave us at any cost.
