The Government of India yesterday expressed doubts about British Prime Minister David Cameron‘s approach to addressing war crimes allegations in Sri Lanka and claimed that the style was counter productive, an Indian media report says.

Cameron, who left Colombo after attending CHOGM, had set a four month deadline for Sri Lanka to order an independent probe into alleged brutality against civilians or face an international UN-backed investigation.
The Economic Times in India quoted Government sources in Delhi as being dismissive of Cameron’s approach. “It is not our style to go and talk like Cameron did…this can be counter-productive.
We know what could be an effective approach and our interlocutors also know what India desires,” a senior source said.
Claiming that India has not lost leverage in Sri Lanka after PM’s decision to skip the CHOGM owing to domestic compulsions, the source said, “…The fact that external affairs minister went (there) is a sign of commitment to Sri Lanka… Just as Sri Lanka cannot be wished away, India cannot be wished away,” the report quoted the source as saying.

Northern Tamil girl weds Sinhala soldier
Raghu Tharmila, a northern Tamil lass from Savalkadu, Sudumalai entered matrimonial bliss with Ranjith Amerasena, a soldier attached to the 11th Sinha Regiment of the Sri Lanka Army.
The couple became man and wife at a special ceremony held at the ‘Thalsevana’ holiday resort in Kankesanthurai on Wednesday the 20th of November.
Tharmila and Ranjith crossed ethnic, religious and regional boundaries to join hand in hand with the blessings of family, friends and elders of their communities. The wedding ceremony was conducted according to Hindu religious rituals by Mahesawaran Kurukkal of Karavetty Pillayar Kovil in Annaikoddai. A large number of family members of both bride and groom and security forces officers were also present. The groom’s family had come all the way from Tambuttegama in Anuradhapura to accompany the newest member of their family back home.
This marriage signifies the reconciliation that is taking place between the two communities. It sends out a clear message to the world, a message of love and understanding that can be attained without any external intervention.
Security Forces Commander – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe along with the other officers, government officials and well wishers present at the ceremony wished the newlyweds a happy married life.

Nothing new, I have close relatives who married Sinhalese. I grew up with Sinhalese family member.
Now is the girl going to be converted to Buddhism and will their children be raised as Buddhists i.e. Sinhalese or will the kids also retain their mother’s Tamil identity.
Sinhala Nationalists and those pushing for the demographic swamping of the North by Sinhalese will see these sort of marriages as way to wipe out Tamils, slow gradual assimilation by dominant majority over the minority.

This is a true story.
One of my close relatives son and a sinhala girl at Preadeniya medical faculty fell in love. After they qualified as doctors they got married against the wishes of the girls family. This is in 2009 at the height of the war .
The couple were given a hard time by the girls family and decided to migrate to Australia.
However one of the brothers of the girl was bit supportive, out of curiosity he decided to go to Jaffana and spend a few days with his in-laws, his experience in Jaffana, opened his eyes, he persuaded the rest of the family to visit Jaffana and see for themselves.
They said that there is so much anti Tamil brain wash that they get from the Sinhala media and believed everything anti Tamil pumped out.
Now the parents are also in Australia looking after the grand child. They decided to become the so called Tamil diaspora

My Tamil/Sinhala parents were kicked out from both their families when they decided to tie the knot in the ’50’s. The Sinhala side settled within three months, the Tamil side too fell in line. Anyway, we should encourage more Sinhala – Tamil marriages.

I have also paternal relatives whose sons have got married to tamil girls. At the beginning, not fathers, but mothers of those families were disagreeing as if theirs sons got joined with Tiger supporting tamils, but when grandchildren were there, it has all become calm and quiet. However all these mentioned incidents were not local soils. I think it takes always more time Sinhala or Tamil families to see the reality in terms of intermarriages.
We also had Uni mates that then had love affairs between the folks, I have no information how they ended up after leaving those unis.

India is trying to put the spokes in the wheel: It did not lift a finger or stop the genocide of Tamils; in fact it provided arms, money, coordination and intelligence services to Sri Lanka while the mass killing of Tamil civilians were going on.

The issue I have is that Dayan does not defend – he merely offers obtuse distractions as a way of weaseling out.
Here is a good example:
Al Jazeera asked the President why Dayan made a 180 degree turn on his support to MR on war crimes issue after the Weliveraya incidence. MR said it is because Dayan now works for an NGO. The obvious implication is Dayan prostitutes his skills/credentials. Number of us have asked Dayan to answer Al Jazeera’s question – and his only defence so far has been “Can MR name the NGO?!”
That is a complete cop-out and a distraction- not an objective defence.
He needs to answer/defend (a) what made him change his view and support to MR on possible war crimes on Tamils promptly after Weliveraya incidence, (b) why he will not challenge or defend his honour in being accused by the President on international media of prostituting his skills.
What Dayan does is to blabber on-and-on to distract rather than forthrightly respond/defend – and that is merely a cowardice way out far too unbecoming of one who wants to be recognized as an academic and an intellect.

WHY ? SIMPLY BECAUSE IF A CONCILIATORY APPROACH TO MR IS NOW ON THE CARDS, INDIA WOULD STILL NEED AN ACE UP IT’S SLEEVE TO QUICKLY PUT PRESSURE ON MR SHOULD THAT APPROACH FAIL.
ELSE, HE’D HAVE A TOUGH TIME BALANCING HIS ACT WITH TAMIL NADU. ACTIONS MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY REFLECT THE MAN AS WELL AS THE POLITICIAN. When Indian Oil came in there were similar pseudo-national cries. The truth is today Indian Oil provides a useful service and pays very valuable taxes regularly to the Exchequer.
The ideal approach is not to revile our investors at every turn but to use our management skills to use their capital, valuable experiences and expert advise to benefit this country and its people.
