Chathura’s Wedding

By Grusha Andrews

In the midst of a tragi-comedy that is Chathura Senaratne’s wedding lies the truly sad funeral that is the death of our national conscience. The 4000 guest opulent wedding pushed down our collective national throats via TV channels, internet and social media actually represent the absolute disrespect politicians have for the citizens of our troubled nation.

It is not with a light heart that the author writes this commentary on one’s wedding which is a very important milestone of life. But the usage of Temple Trees premises as the venue for this mega wedding, the near 11 minute  “oration” by the groom and the statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office defending the usage of government property precipitated this article.

The burning question about Chathura Senaratne is: does he not have any power of reflection in spite of the error of his birth to be born to his lowliest caliber of parents well documented for corruption, misuse of public property and nepotism? Surely, belonging to a new generation, does he not possess some thoughts overarching his pitiful genetic destiny? What was he thinking when he exploited the property of the public, entertaining his wedding guests with public monies and to make a spectacle of himself in this ignoramic fashion? Is his thinking so gruesomely retarded?

No. We Are A Nation Of Retards

Starting from the joker president reciting riddles riddled with cheap sexual connotations in public to the Prime Minster who has deskinned Good Governance pretty much with finality to the janitor scrubbing the toilette, our nation is bound by a common national ailment: it is the mental retardation pertaining to the accountability, responsibility and citizen’s rights. It has become a deplorable national practice to tolerate all intolerable mischief by converting them to Facebook jokes and turning up the jocularity one more notch till we are herded to the next intolerable mischief. Tolerating despotic, undemocratic, thieving politicians has become our national habit.

“Ranil Brand” Statement From the PM’s Office

Ranil Wickremesinghe may be a failure in many areas, but he excels in the dis-art of insulting the intelligence of others with completely humorless hairsplitting argument understood by God and himself alone. No modern politician can match his ability at making a mockery out of media and the general intelligence of the nation with replies such as “oh I just had a black coffee with the President”. The lack-luster journalists don’t have the strength of character to prevent Wickremesinghe going scot free and the rest of the citizenry do not have the moral courage to question such behaviors from a supposedly responsible politician.

That Ranil Wickremesinghe’s office defends their position in letting the Temple Tress premises being used for Chathura Senaratne’s wedding. What moral right have they to defend this abuse of public property that is maintained with the tax money of the poor? The poor of our nation sleep empty bellied, their children die of overeating leaves of trees and acidic fruit to satiate hunger, their children do not have a pair of shoes to school. Can the Prime Minister’s office, in good conscience simply claim that it did not foot the bill of food or decoration for this wedding to justify this misuse? How can they issue statements that this hall has been similarly used previously? That the reasons for letting this to Senaratne’s is “with good cause”? There is only one person who has at least a partial moral right to have a wedding within the Temple Trees premises. That would be a child of the Prime Minister because this premises would be that child’s residence. To the best of our vigilant knowledge that child is not yet born.

Was It Really A Wedding?

According to the speech made by Chathura Senaratne, only 20 of their relatives attended this function. Hence, the rest of the 3980 guest ,by his own admission are political associates. The question arises whether a select Member of Parliament can use public property to a political promotion aka “wedding” of this nature. Weren’t the officials of the Temple Tress concerned about the security ramifications of such event? Isn’t it their official duty to address these concerns?

The Prime Minister’s Secretariat justifies stating Rajitha Senaratne is a minister of the government which in turn “justifies” this abuse of public property. Instead of the thousands of positive things they could have learned from the seasoned Prime Minister, these officials seem to have only learnt how to present monkey logic just like their boss, insulting their own intelligence and those of others. Before perusing the Advanced Level qualifications of SAITM students one should check if these imbecilic officials have passed the 8th grade.

Chathura Senaratne states that when he received the auspicious dates for his wedding ceremony, no hotels were available for his wedding. The writer would like to state that Chathura should go and say this to babes in the woods!

The Message Behind The Venue

Even a babe in the woods can understand the hidden message of this Temple Trees fiasco. Surely, this exercise was never executed by Rajitha Senaratne due to his inability to secure a five star hotel in Colombo. He is sending a message to friends and foe, that he is the successor of the Temple Trees and that Chathura Senaratne is the prince in line to the throne. He is sending the message that Temple Trees is his play ground in 2019 if Ranil Wickremesinghe manages to win his presidential bid appointing Rajitha Senaratne the Prime Minister. He may even be dreaming of displacing Wickremesinghe short cutting to the throne. Pipe dreams may be, but dreams nevertheless. He wants to etch in to the brains of political slaves in particular, to remember Chathura Senarante’s imagined political inheritance. Should the children of our nation pay for the two bit dreams and political mind games of these narcissists?

Misappropriation of Public Property

Chathura Senaratne’s wedding was held inside the Temple Trees premises. The entire premises is maintained by the tax payer’s money. The carpets that are walked on, the water, air-conditioning, and air cooling and purifying devices, maintenance of the large chandeliers, vacuum cleaning thousands of square foot of flooring, repeated cleaning of the toilettes with every use to five star standards- all these incur a hidden cost not captured by a superficial glance. Also, one must consider the large investment of the time and overtime payment of government officers for the planning and execution of this mega wedding tamasha. Who has paid the salaries and overtime payments of such officers? Rajitha Senaratne? Sujatha Senaratne? Chathura Senaratne? Sarupa Manatunga? Sarupa’s mother? It should not surprise the reader if tomorrow these shameless  individuals will claim that the “payment” they made for the venue included all these costs and “leak” receipts where the payments have been made to a‘t’.

Even if Senaratnes indeed “paid” for these services, there remains a distinction between hiring this venue for its intended purposes and a political tamasha. This venue is usually used or hired by other government institutions for important trainings, skills development programmes and award presentations etc. The events that are carried out in this venue are of consequence to the nation as they contribute to the empowerment, skills development and the motivation of the government sector. There is a return on investment in such endeavor. What return will the nation get by “hiring” this venue for an iconic political jester to feed the ego mania of himself and his infamous parents? Is his “payment” at least worth the wear and tear of the plush carpets by the feet of 4000 strong wedding guests?

Role Of Mahinda Rajapaksa In Trivializing The State

One unmistakable observation that should be made in the backdrop of this tasteless fiasco is that it is Mahinda and Shiranthi Rajapaksa who institutionalized the reduction of official state buildings in to party venues of political stooges. They diminished the official, respectable, stately and silent stature of these official spaces and will be remembered for that. During his tenure the actress marrying at the Presidents House today will be arrested for financial fraud tomorrow. The next actress marrying at Temple Tress today will be arrested for alleged prostitution tomorrow. If one really reflects in silence, one understands that the majority of the modern politicians in Sri Lanka are nothing but the political ejaculates of the Rajapakse brand, amounting to not more than shameless masses of flesh. Other than their sharp acumen for trickery and looting, most do not exhibit any capacity for critical thinking or governance.

A Message For Sarupa’s Mother From The Nation

This wedding ceremony was a lowly, pitiless monstrous act of corruption. It is an abuse of political power. It amounts to shamelessness. In the so called lowly slum dwellings where so called lowly men who celebrate their marriages drinking kasippu have more honor and honesty than these dispicables. There is more respectability and sophistication in such so called lowly celebration compared to this mega corrupt wedding. The so called lowly men celebrate their lives with the thickened palms of hard labor, their discriminated hearts and dispossessed rights to a decent life. Drug addicts in the back allies have more respectability than these politicians and their associates. Imitating the archaic ritual of vouching for the chastity of the bride, Chathura Senaratne delivered a cringe worthy account of Sarupa’s “good character” referring to her as a “girl who did not lift her eyes to look at another boy” (Sarupa, you have surely won the collective national sympathy).

There is a small message from the nation to Sarupa’s “venerable” mother:

Mrs. Manatunga, we, the tax paying citizens of this country have not asked for a character certificate of your daughter Sarupa. However we demand that our government demonstrates transparency in its use of public property and funds. “Good character” does not lie in the “eyes that are not lifted to look at a boy”, nor in any other part of anatomy that the writer does not wish to invoke in this article. Character is a valuable concept manifested in our truthful and honest conduct. In that context, a commercial sex worker has more “character” than your daughter who has staged a tamasha abusing public funds.

“……………..………………………………………………have not asked for a character certificate”
In hallowed tradition, it is the mother in law of the bride who satisfies herself by inspecting the bed sheet after the honeymoon.
A family doctor who was consulted about this by a worried would-be bride, advised the girl to prick a finger during the honeymoon night and leave a tiny bloodstain in the centre of the bedsheet.
She did so, and reported that the mother in law was delighted, and doted on her thereafter.
Use/misuse of state facilities for private events happens off & on even in other countries. In Sri Lanka, it is a case of “if you have the spoon, serve yourself first and well”.
The 4000 guests appear to have not objected.

Thank you Grusha Andrews for the bravery.

It is the translation into words, of the pulse emanating from silent hearts of helpless Sri Lankan people.

May it become an eye opener.

“Chathura Senaratne delivered a cringe worthy account of Sarupa’s “good character” referring to her as a “girl who did not lift her eyes to look at another boy” (Sarupa, you have surely won the collective national sympathy). “
A masterful double-edged put-down if ever there was one. Great one, Grusha. But you shouldn’t have compared the bride to a sex worker.

Grusha , initially it was Sanga and now it looks like Chathuras turn. Point is well taken only because you did not spare the original architect MR of this caricature show. In my opinion the Senaratnas have done enough damage my misusing the Sanctum (in your words not mine) in way of partying, possibly getting drunk and pissing in those well manicured lawns. But the Rajapaksas were raping, looting and had turned the Holy place into a Mafia den. One thing I agree with you in total is Lankans are retards.

    Brilliant and thanks Gusha.
Ranil, Rajitha, Mahinda and US citizen and war criminal Gota and Ravi K should all share the same prison cell for looting Lanka – Miracle of Modayas.

Now that we have a good standing certificate from Chathura can we ask the same about him????? Dude we are in 2018. I am sure the doctor parents would have given that same moral certificate in a more appropriate way. If I was the parent of that girl ??????

“… in spite of the error of his birth to be born to his lowliest caliber of parents …. pitiful genetic destiny” [Is the writer insinuating race/caste?]
“There is only one person who has at least a partial moral right to have a wedding within the Temple Trees premises. That would be a child of the Prime Minister because this premises would be that child’s residence. To the best of our vigilant knowledge that child is not yet born. “
“a commercial sex worker has more “character” than your daughter who has staged a tamasha abusing public funds.”
It is regrettable that the writer, while doing a marvelous job of exposing the abominable hypocrisy and outright swindling of public money by Ranil and the Senaratnes by holding them to the highest of ethical standards, succumbs for her part to despicable levels of homophobia and misogyny as the above comments clearly demonstrate. While being a woman (going by the name Grusha), the writer in general belittles women. Jokes are an essential part of wedding speeches. What Chathura said was a cliched joke repeated at countless weddings by countless bridegrooms. To pick on that as a ‘certificate’ of the bride’s character is so pathetic. Even worse, using that to bring in an anatomical connotation where none was intended. The coup de grâce of course: “a commercial sex worker has more “character” than your daughter who has staged a tamasha abusing public funds.” This should never befall on any daughter even if her in-laws are the worst scum of the earth. The bottom line is Mrs. Manatunga and Sarupa are also private citizens. They should not be abused in the media as part of a political game. Don’t get me wrong. I totally condemn the abuse of public property and tax payers’ money involved in the wedding. But I also equally condemn the cheap sexual connotations involving homophobia and misogyny that are now becoming part of our political culture.

      Dear Sir,
I respond to you with a lot of goodwill and humility because you are a voice of reason in responding to any article, not just mine.
I’m sorry my harsh words have invoked distaste in you.
As mentioned it was a dilemma to venture writing this article on the grounds of social decorum at an important milestone of one’s life. Neither the bride, nor her mother are private citizens any longer when they consciously , knowingly and willfully partake in arrogant and blatant abuse of public funds. They cease their right to a private wedding, private comments, private vouching of chastity when they do so on our sweat and tax. It they pay for their wedding, then what they say or do is their business.
I’m sorry that you view my comments as homophobia. I earnestly assure you that I have no ill sentiments towards any gender, caste or race. I have merely pointed out that there is no justification to such an event being held if one is not the resident of Temple Trees. I do not view having a child as a sign of CIS normativeness of a man and I salute Hon. Wickremesinghe for weathering such abuse over the decades. I have aptly recognized his emotional resilience in my article “Ranil at Krukshetra, Do Not Cry”. I apologize if I have in anyway hurt your (or any other reader’s) sense of gender justice.
Finally, as harsh, even heartless as I may sound, at the risk of disenchantment of many, I stand by my sentiments. We are a LMIC only in theory. Our people live in abject poverty beyond our day to day imagination. I don’t think Sarupa or her mother should get away with corruption any more than Ravi Karunanayake’s wife. They are accountable for consciously partaking in economic violence against the tax payer of our country pretending to be damsels in distress. They are not. They willfully and deliberately commit these acts of miserable injustice and think they should be excused because they are women, brides, bride’s mothers, daughters, wives: that belief too is patriarchy. That women should be excused for partaking in conscious corruption because they are women. If women seek equal ground, then they should be held to equal standards of accountability.
A woman who sells her body in SL does this for economic reason. We make our drug addicts and prostitutes as a nation. I stand my belief that these politicians and their wives , brides et al who pretend to be such babes, looting our country are worse than those persons on whom we may pass moral judgment.
Sir, drug addicts and prostitutes have more honor than these looter men and women.
However, in recognition of your ever earnest, moderate and largely just commentary throughout CT, I must say I understand your disenchantment. I hope you bear with me.
Thank you Ajay, I learn from you and your kind and rational views.
      I remain, faithfully,
      Grusha Andrews

Oh no, please don’t apologize. We all can state what our true opinions/concerns are without feeling bad. We confront ideas with counter ideas to clarify and sharpen them so that we can push the discussion forward on social issues calling for justice. You’re a great writer and debater. You have very strong views that I enjoy as a fresh breeze in Sri Lanka’s stifling mediascape. That is why I read with the utmost care what you write. I’m convinced you didn’t mean to offend anyone. I too can be harsh at times and I hope I haven’t hurt anyone.
        Take care & good luck.

This is my first comment on Colombo Telegraph. I have started reading CT only because of Grusha Andrews and her candid analysis of issues. Grusha Andrews writes with passion but with reason.

I don’t think Grusha is referring to the caste or racial heritage of Chathura. Merely his unluckiness to have a pig like Rajitha as his father – a specific genetic heritage than one belonging to a stereotypical class. Sort of like being the son of Hitler or Donald Trump.

It is true that her words are unusually harsh in this article. But living in Sri Lanka she must be closer to the truth than some of us expatriates. Sarupa and her mother stopped being private citizens the moment they chose to abuse public funds – now they are extremely public criminals. Rajitha had an equally ostentatious wedding for his other son, Eksath, a year back. I don’t recall seeing an article about that from Grusha – even though it must have been funded by the billions the minister has stolen and taken in bribes.

I don’t see any reference to homophobia in Grusha’s article. Ajay, your own integrity comes into question when your criticism stops being based on the article. Who are you an apologist for here?

Since none of us are idiots, I don’t think anyone is under any delusion about the moral character about any of the actors in this comedy, from the thieving President, Prime Mininister and Minister, to their equally criminal family members. I must agree with Grusha that a prostitute who practices her trade on premises paid for on her own dime, has far more honor than Chathura or Sarupa, who should have had the integrity to turn down the corruption of their parents.

While the article is written in language that I personally would not write in, everyone seems to be missing the point. We are the morons who allow our public institutions to be used for the orgies of our elected officials. “A people who elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves, and traitors are not victims… but accomplices” – George Orwell

        Silent Majority

        You are welcome.

“We are the morons who allow our public institutions to be used for the orgies of our elected officials. “A people who elect corrupt politicians, imposters, thieves, and traitors are not victims… but accomplices” – George Orwell”

I like your condemnation for authorities.
You are going to do well in these forums.

This is not a masterpiece unlike the Sangakkara article which was super brilliant

Well done Grusha Andrews. People like her put aside their work to bother to write actually do this to wake us up. Her words may be uncharacteristically harsh this time, but these corrupt Senaratnes deserve worse. If they wanted praise and fun, they should have had a private wedding – not made a public spectacle of their shameless embezzlement. I disagree that she is sexist or homophobic. Grusha Andrews is a very human, provocative and titillating writer of CT. She sometimes crosses some dangerous lines, but we can hardly say she is over reacting. She makes us uncomfortable because she forces us to face our own shortcomings – in a democracy if the leaders are morons, then by definition so are the people. Keep it up Grusha.

Today I read CT after two weeks and immediately noticed this article (I have no time to read daily). Like many others I read Grusha’s articles with keen interest whenever I come across them. She writes brilliantly and always has a point. I agree with her outburst although someone has criticised the language she has used here. To that person I must say if the purpose is for them to understand what they are doing, the point needs to be made in their own language. A decorous discourse will have no effect. Besides when a writer is very angry, you cannot expect decorum. Angry to the core, rightly so.
My information to Grusha is to take a look at other people who have given up. One among thousands cannot make a change although the effort is highly appreciated and valued. I have almost given up playing the fiddle to deaf elephants. Once I wrote at the passing of my bright and beautiful brother at a tender age of 49,
    “Lamps burn bright
    Burn out fast”
Keep the good work but I hate to see you burnout.

Helasinghe Bandara and Grusha Andrews are both Mahinda Rajapakse stooges and Ranil W haters. We do not like both of you as we know who Mahinda Raja is. Ranil is better and refined than the Rajapakse brootes that you want to promote.

My God. This bride looks like a girl I know.

Way back in the late 80s when JVP rif-rafs were running riot, we raided a wedding ceremony in the pretext of arresting JVPers. In that wedding the bride looked just like this lass.

We shot the groom claiming him to be a JVPer and took the bride with us. And let me tell you fellas that under the protocols of the Geneva convention I as a serviceman do not have to divulge any additional information that I do not want to.

    • 1

      Retarded Reggie,
Don’t tell us that the bride bit off your (already undersized) crown jewel , and that is why you have to be satisfied with just looking at some things nowadays.

The opulence of the Chathura wedding pales compared to the ‘Son-of-Gota’ wedding.
How about this? Mid August, Namal Rajapaksa has been present to provide evidence of the moment the marriage proposal was made by Rohitha Rajapaksa (on bended knees) to his girl friend (of nine years) Tatyana on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the fourth highest mountain in the world. Wait for the wedding. Go back to sleep Royal Astrologer of Lanka.
