Choice Of Candidate A Significant Factor In Defeating Gotabaya: Stop Gotabaya-Rex!

By Kumar David

Prof. Kumar David

Gotabaya’s candidature for the presidency has been announced with much fanfare. All the backward forces of Sri Lankan society gathered at a great event organised by an elitist-chauvinist outfit called Viyathmaga in a resplendent hall to greet their new champion. Narrow nationalists and Sinhala chauvinists were there; leaders of the Joint Opposition attended; a sprinkling of the Dead Left deserted geriatric beds to put in a showing. Vasudeva did not attend but tied himself in knots saying one thing and then another according to the Daily Financial Times; goodly numbers of businessmen salivating for spoils were there. Understandably some fed up with Ranil’s pluperfect incompetence, stunned by Sirisena’s treachery and mystified by the venality of presidential skunks in carparks also drifted into the meeting.

Neo-populism has made sweeping gains in Europe and America. In Italy the equivalent of the Bernie Sanders base and the Trump base have allied and formed a government. It is possible that Lanka’s chauvinist alt-right, petty-bourgeois populists, business clusters and retired military-fascists thought it not too early to show their hand. Or maybe the knives are out in Rajapaksa-Joint Opposition circles (the Dead Left wants Chamal, crooks want Basil, chauvinist want Gotha), so it was necessary to stake an early claim. The meeting was billed as the launch of Gota’s economic programme; though GL Peries denied it, it was in fact the launch of a presidential bid pending Mahinda’s endorsement. Why on earth would one launch an economic programme except as the first step in a presidential bid?

What did the sayings of this monetary, fiscal, financial and economic genius add up to; prosaic platitudes, plain prose and banalities. Here’s a sampling.

  • The foremost priority is economic growth, the foundation and the cure for all ills.
  • Growth will ensure the sustained prosperity and well-being of the people.
  • Transforming the economy; futuristic policies; right people; dedicated execution.
  • We will be driven by humans with power and many sided abilities.
  • We will open up to foreign investors and international partners.
  • We will safeguard sovereignty and cultural values.

So there is not much to it as an economic programme; no fiscal policy, no debt reduction targets, no export strategy, no specific relationship between state and capital, and no planning perspective; it was all piss and wind. More interesting was what was missing from the speech of this high member of the last government. Basil’s pilfering from every project and contract; can how the same people be restrained. Mahinda’s megalomaniac outlays and how the same regime can avoid it again.

Aborting Gotabaya-Rex

Gotabaya-Rex (GR), a label suggested by a smartarse friend, can be stopped, must be stopped, and not difficult to stop unless yahapalanamakes a fool of itself, again. Aye there’s the rub, folly has become a habit. Not just Ranil and the damn fool UNP but even my comrades in the January 8-th Movement, as we call ourselves, had no clue what was coming on 10 February. I can say, not proudly but sadly, that I was the only one in my circle (left, radicals and liberals) who saw impending defeat.

The JVP was in cloud cuckoo land; the economic genius of Ranil-Charitha-Malik-Eran-Harsha delivered a stillborn old-style-liberal programme which it is now busy cremating; the TNA, “brilliant” Sumanthiran included, could not see the flop of the new constitutional project staring it in the face (how can we get a constitution when the president undermines it at every turn?); and our wacky president lives in never-never land. Lal Wijenayake has exposed in polite but no uncertain terms that His Excellency is not excellent at telling the truth. The aforementioned economic quintet, deep in slumber, couldn’t see Modi’s state driven strategy delivering 7.7% growth, two years in a row, just across the Palk Strait. The 100-day Programme was only a transitional stabiliser before getting to serious business which never came.

Yet GR can be stopped despite crummy yahapalana.Gota can be defeated because voting is driven by ethnic prejudices. I have done this arithmetic before but it bears repetition. (Those weak in arithmetic can give algebra or calculus a try but they can’t subvert logic and number). Unless Muslims and Tamils (Ceylon and Upcountry) catch suicidal abstention-influenza they will vote 100% against Gota. That’s a good 20% of the population. Not all the Cardinal’s Hail Mary’s and novenas will swing much of the Catholic vote. Counting down to fractions is absurd but the broad picture is immutable; 23+% of the population, the minorities, constitute an anti-Gota rock. Hence I contend that unless Gota polls over two-thirds of the Sinhala-Buddhist (SB) vote (70% of the population) his prospects are dim. (The UNP has never polled less than 25% of the SB vote; add the JVP and civil society). Ethnic account keeping may make you sick, as it does me, but get real; this is Mother Lanka in modern times, not Plato’s Republic.

Yet our yahapalanachapps are expert at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory! There are two threats; mass abstentions as on 10 February when one in four or one in five UNPers gave Ranil a kick in the butt and abstained, second the tricky question of identifying the anti-Gotha candidate who can draw the largest support. At this point in time my mind is a bit blank; I can conjure up only two names, Ranil and the JVP’s Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD). I don’t think the Field Marshal is a persuasive suitor though he has offered himself; better he goes head to head with Mahinda in Kurunegala at a general election. I rule out a surprise dark horse as in 2015 a second time; that cock won’t fight again. This time the Rajapaksa slayer must come from active political ranks and the SLFP’s offer, now howling like a cornered hyena in a carpark, is already kaput.

Both have weaknesses. Ranil has soiled his linen and muddied populist waters, but to my mind this is less serious than yahapalana’scalamitous inability to put a single Paksa-era mega crook (Lalith Wis small change) behind bars. Mariano Rajoy was evicted as Spain’s PM because 29 of his party members were proved to be crooks; the new Malaysian government will fix million-dollar mega-crook Najib Razak; last week I gave examples where mega-crooks including Presidents have been nabbed and convicted. Lanka’s at-cross-purposes yahapalana, its bovine prosecutors and a soporific judiciary add up to a worse-than-useless decoction. For better for worse Ranil will bear the brunt of this at the next election.

On the plus side, the UNP base and Muslims, Tamils and Catholics is a sure-bet block vote against Gota (observe I prefer not to say for-Ranil for reasons of accuracy). The minorities and a minority-of-the-majority will defeat the majority-of-the-majority at the next presidential election; that’s how it will be. That’s fine and how democracy sometimes works. One can’t limit elections to the majority only can one! Having made this formal point it is true that for reasons of stability as large a part of the SB vote as possible should be wrested away from Gota.

A plus point for Gotha is his ability to get things done. Whether I tis sprucing up the city, demolishing low cost flats, evicting tenants, making beggars vanish by magic or fighting a war Gotha, is a doer and has built himself a brand name in contrast to hobbling Ranil. SBs who see human rights and democracy as mollycoddling Tamils, cast an approving eye on Gota and see the Jolly Roger as a fitting escutcheon for his candidacy. Many in the business community see in Gota a firm hand to keep ‘rowdy’ workers in place and enforce discipline. Despite all this I see a pattern ‘overdetermined’ by ethnicity; but for this anti-Gotha ethnic polarisationyahapalanawill fare much worse.

On balance, and if the UNP backs him (not necessarily a big if, depending on how the next 12 months may pan out), how strong a Gotha-slayer will JVP leader AKD be? Before dismissing the option let’s recount the strength of his case. Prior to the local government elections many were saying “Cha, good buggers, they are not corrupt, they are disciplined and given a chance can do something; but cha, can’t vote for them no; can’t waste a vote”. Yes there is goodwill towards the JVP not only in subaltern but also in the middle classes. However, there is apprehension about whether the it will “run wild” if entrusted with power; memories of 1971 and 1989-90 are still fresh. The possibility of AKD, as an anti Gota-Rex candidate of a broad alliance, with the UNP as the senior partner in control, is not ruled out though I suspect the UNP base will not stand for it. “What! Again! After one rotten egg in 2015 do we want another outsider who won’t let ‘our government’ execute policy?”

For these reasons I cannot, as of now, see any other strong anti Gota (or anti Basil or Chamal) candidate in the wings. It seems we are stuck with Ranil, warts and all, and it’s mostly warts. I would love to hear serious, strategically thought out views about other options; concrete proposals, names. The condition, the shared bottom-line, must be defeating any Rajapaksa who shows his face. Sans this, I am not much interested.

I still place my bet with RW as against Gota. RW would have been forced to commit the Bond scam for the greater good of this country, for the UNP to have funds to fight MR who has udlib funds robbed from the govt coffers. It is easy for the public and specially MR supporters to castigate RW for the Bond scam. But the reality is the UNP would have been a sitting duck for MR who has all the money to sway the vote, back to him. None can state that RW has robbed funds for himself or his family. This is a fact. It is only through RW that this society can find a decent honest person in the future and certainly not through the Rajapaksas. Think! Think!

Just be honest. It was Ranil’s list had the 118 telephone numbers for PTL to call and donate 1 Million for each. That is what a sincere mind would suspect. But do you say that is for the good of the country? Aloysius was giving even during the Old Son Prince time. They didn’t leak any details like Yahapalanaya did in Central Bank case. The mistake on the perception of Yahapalanaya was, Mahendran and Aloysius are Tamils and they can be easily hanged to accept the guilt. But that strategy missed. Remember Pillaiyan said that Old Royal paid to him to get rid of New Royals, but it didn’t catch the fire because Old Royal met in the prison and shaped it up, as per Colombo media.

It is Ranil, who created the new culture of Opposition and Ruling getting along to offer impunity to political criminals. That is why even opposition MPs are in the 118 list.

The main prelection topic are , how to defeat Gota ,how to stop MR , how get rid of Ranil and UNP or How to bring in MR ,via Gota or My3.

There is approximately a comfortable period of almost 11/2. Years for both Elections.

People have now forgotten the accusations of the Previous regimes ,now it’s a new song , The Bond gate song , so the people are all too busy to think of anything else and from the other end JVP has suddenly woken up from.their slumber ,they want the Executive Presidency abolished .

Not a Single political party or Politician are interested to find out what exactly is needed to save the Country and the people .

Have anyone done a Island wide survey ?have they found out the state of the peoples life ? What people as a whole will benefit and what will encourage everyone to work towards a common goal of developing the Country ?

Have the people who want faces changed read in detail the prelection manifesto of the candidates ?

What do each of these Candidate propose to offer ?

We been changing faces for years and we are yet to see a change .

sirisena is determined to try for a second term.Ranil has told him he wants to contest. So he got angry with ranil thinking that the UNP has just used him like a condom. He got cosy with gota who seems to have taken the bait. The agreement between the two will be sirisena as the president and gota the PM.

So this is not gota’s presidential campaign. That will come after he has shown what agood administrator he is when he becomes the PM and then after sirisena steps down he will campaign for the presidency. The problem here for gota and sira is basil. There seems to be a fissure in the SLPP ranks as shown by 18 MPs abstaining and not voting for sira’s nominee fernandopulle.i presume that they are basil’s people and basil is opposed to joining with sirisena.

I of course believe that basil is wrong and this is the only way out for the rajapakshes.

KD’s arithmetic is correct, but the Tamil factor of State Council day boycott has also to be reckoned with. Flu shot prescription this year and next needs to be administered for the boycott influenza that KD has diagnosed.

More potent will be Hitler films on: Reichstag Fire, Gas Chambers, murder mania of ethnic minorities etc.

Gota is focusing only on the economy under the assumption that invigorating the economy will solve all of the people’s problems. But the Tamil people and other minorities have more important priorities. Of course, they want economic prosperity but first and foremost they want their problems addressed meaningfully.

No mention of this is made at all in Gota’s Grand Vision, my foot! He is wearing blinders. He just wants to do things his own way and force his ideas down people’s throats. We will resist that like wild horses trying to evade capture! GO TO HELL, GOTA.

Make me the Minister Power and I will see that the demand side and supply side are managed properly. I will also negotiate with India to connect our grid to theirs so that Sri Lankan consumers will have free electricity in 3 years time. I am serious here. I can prove what I say.

Nothing but the same rubbish seem to be the case with mathugama gonthadiya.

This man would never learn it. Now being in his late 70ties to mislead the nation this way is beyond all ethics and morals.

We perfectly know Gotabaya is a man with killing minded mentality. He would take the revenge on anyone… we know how he took it from Gernal Fonseka. Today, the current govt does not do the same, but being very soft, have permitted Rajapkashe babarbarians to score as never before inthe history. But as I see it that can be a trick… on long run.. whatever being said and done.. Rajapkshe will have to end up their journey in a local Prison.
Not just males but also that gold business lady PITTU GEDIYA like woman to have killed Thadjudeen – an another young man as age as Rajapakse stupid sons.

This [edited out] believes, just 90% of Mathugama people can make him a winner. Rajapakshe was voted by many across the country, but the high criminal was defeated him in the PE.
How can Edwin the most abusive creature grown up in Mathugama kEKUNAWELA ganaga has the audacity to make the predictions of this nature. Born fool being unable to sense the least, but having the genetics to be part of highly corrupted men, just drops down them from his cesspit.
Most ridiculous is even every dog in that region would bite him twice, if they would have been made aware, the bugger is appointed as the minister for power.
He can only be a guard to housemaids living in ME since the play boy has abused them on and on as many reported to us on recent POSTS.

Mahinda Rajapakse family is a not only a threat to democracy, it is a threat to national security, it is a threat to national wealth, it is a threat to economy, it is a therat to unity, it is a threat to peace. There is enough evidence to show to prove that they are opportunistic and they are capable of working against national interest.
It is a well known fact that in 1989-1993 Mahinda Rajapakse worked with NGO’s, and made several visits to UN against the Premadasa government, against Srilankan Military and demanded UNHCR investigation against alleged human rights violations of Military. Who was Premadasa? He was a UNP President who came from an ordinary family, who was not the favourite of high class UNP group, who fought against this high class group within UNP, who was against indian army came in the name of peace keeping, who fought against JVP terrorism. So, who is a true patriotic? Is it Mahinda or Premadasa?

        NV,
Gota is recognised as a doer. Catholics don’t have any particular animosity towards him. Gota has won a core UNP constituency within the business community belonging to all ethnic communities. If he gets MR blessings, he will get the overall majority of Sinhala Buddhist vote. The LC results already show that a sizeable Muslim bloc has voted with pohottuva. Gota is already working with Muslim opinion makers to improve his image within the community. KD’s arithmetic of defeating Gota is a best case scenario with a very low probability as of now. Gota has an excellent opportunity of wining 2020. As I mentioned elsewhere his vision is still too narrow to my liking. Viyathmaga needs to broaden it’s intellectual base and economic, social, cultural outlook.

What Kumar David’s analysis confirms is Demalu and Muslims are a ungrateful lot. It is because of the leadership given by Rajapakses to eliminate megalomaniac Prabhakaran and crush the ruthless LTTE that Demalu and Muslims got the opportunity to live in a peaceful environment after going through hell for nearly three decades. Yet, Kumar David think that Demalu and Muslims will not vote for Gotabhaya. If Sarath Fonseka won in 2010, he would have taken revenge from Demalu for what LTTE did to him. Rajapakses did not do that. After the war was over, Rajapakse Government gave priority to clear land mines laid by LTTE all over the Northern Province. Gotabhaya took a leading role in rehabilitating LTTE cadres. Basil gave leadership to improve infrastructure and uplifting the economy. All these activities helped ordinary Demalu. What did Ranil do? He gave priority to new constitution to please High Caste Wellala politicians. Nothing much to ordinary Demalu.

Basil Gave LEadership to upliofe the economy. Basil is the one who worked in a Gas Station and only eightth grade passed. but, he was an all rounder minister handling billions of money for the Srilankans govt. why people call him Mr. 10% and during that govt he became Mr. 20% I heard. He had othe rprojects such as widening and digging up rivers by collecting Sands, importing 5000 Cows from Australia when Milking cows are available in India, Sil Redi distribution with 1600 Lakhs, Drug importing contract with the help of LANZA. HE is a multi billionaire and a rich Land owner both in AMerica and in Bengal In India. I heard he went even to vietnam looking for Investment opportunities. How about his Malwana Luxury house and the lands with no OWner named.

Anyways, that will never happen as people who love Mahinda will make dead sure that no injustice will happen to him.

Hey Champa, I generally don’t read your stuff because your postings are bloody long, but today I did, and now I do understand you are a Wimal man/woman/human. This is the thing, Wimal cannot win a Presidential election, yes, may be in 10 years, but not now. He is lot better off supporting whoever Mahinda aiya brings forth (Not Basil I hope because he cannot win either). The best Wimal can do is to (just like his mentor Mahinda Aiya did), wait his time, he is young, he has time. I would say 2030.

Are we, SRILANKANS , all such fools and idiots to even think about voting for ALL these UNPATRIOTIC crooks who robbed MOTER LANKA and all of us.? C’mon. Lets get real and be wise and smart to use our intelligence and GOOD sense to choose the RIGHT people this time. There are enough facts for us to consider in doing the right thing. Hopefully a REAL PATRIOT WILL COME FORWARD TO SAVE OUR LOVELY MOTHER LANKA.

A man who jailed hundreds under the PTA without any evidence – some still jail – and, ordered those who surrendered, even those with ‘white flags’ to be shot dead, to become president of this Dharmadwipa, can happen only in this land said to be blessed with ‘pristine Buddhism’.

Make your facts correct, man. Those jailed under PTA are only hardcore terrorists. Under same PTA, all LTTE minion cadre were rehabilitated and helped them absorbed to the society.
      .
White flag story is the most laughable joke in the last phase of the war. Man, tell me, in a thick jungle, under heavy fire from both sides, in one pitch dark night, who will see a white flag? Army had given many opportunities to the barbarian and his cadre to surrender which he declined. Even if they decided to surrender at the last hour, Colombo had no way to convey messages to the front-line army fighters to stop the attack as they don’t carry or use radio transmitters unless they wanted to become an easy target of the enemy. At that final moment when our Army was determined to finish LTTE terrorists, I don’t think even Mahinda could stop them.
      .
The biggest joke is why did Prabhakaran decide to surrender only when his life is under threat but not when he had 30 years to do that saving 100K civilians and his own cadre? The coward even broke his own savage rule of swallowing the cyanide capsule he even tied around the necks of child soldiers.
      .
You must remember that our Army paid a heavy price to eliminate terrorists. If you hate Gotabhaya for jailing a few hardcore terrorists, then how much do you think should we hate Prabhakaran/his cadre for killing 28,708 and injuring 40,107 of our soldiers, and 100K innocent civilians? You should be grateful to our Army for not killing a single surrendered terrorist but giving them care, protection and right to live. If Mahinda also ordered “no war prisoners” like Obama, then you will have no proof to hate Gotabhaya.

        Champa,
If they were/are terrorists, why no court cases against them yet?
The surrender of VP and his men were in broad daylight.
Even his ten year old son was shot dead earlier, then VP, wife and elder son.
Areas declared as “No Fire Zones” were shelled and bombed.
The Air Force boasted of 5,000 bombing raids.
It was a massacre/war without witnesses who were warned away earlier from the Zone.

VP surrenders in broad daylight? Ha ha ha…..
Why do you bother about only your sungod’s sons and wife? How about other peoples babies, sons, daughters, husband’s and wives he massacred for 30 years? Are you sad that his sons were not alive to take over LTTE?
It was a battle against ruthless TERRORISTS who used sophisticated arms, bombs, missiles, shells, landmines, artillery with air, land and sea power. They were dealt with as appropriate.

This is a simple mathematical analysis of srilankan vote base modern slfp of Mahinda has 46.12 % ,unp has 23.3% ,JVP has 5.89%,slfp of mithri has 11.39% ,Muslim congress has 4%,hela urumaya has 1%,digambaram had 2%,rishard badudeen & manoganeshan has 2%.there is a floating votes closer to 5-6% .you can make applicable this percentages for any past election.since 1994 slfp always had 42% block votes and unp had 26% .this is the reason chandrika won all the election except 2001 during her 11 years with out doing any thing .if unp wants to defeat slfp entire floating vote base has to support unp and entire minority party has to support. If anti Mahinda votes got divided the largest single party in srilankan history the modern slfp has single horse race in any election.in gotabayas election. There is no way to defeat him since they have an 46.1% vote base as a single party and 6 % of slfp votes which was casted by slfpers in local government election will cast for him.and the huge amount of Sinhalese floating votes will cast for him .in Muslim. And Tamil community the business class will vote for gota for the super capitalism policy of Mahinda.mind my word do not try to waste any words because gotabaya is position to win this 2019 election with more than 55% votes folowingly unp+ all minority parties will get 33% JVP will get 5% slfp will get 6%.this election is a similar election as 2010 for rajapaksas.if you want an analysis electorate wise I can do it.

A feeble assumption, surely not an analysis.
What is modern SLFP? Hotu Phottuwa? Officially they got 40.47%. Even then there is no guarantee that Gotabhaya will get all those votes as there is a section against him. You can only “assume” that all Maithree’s votes will be in favour of Gotabhaya but the reality is not. Only an immature can predict that “the huge amount of Sinhalese floating votes will cast for him” as the majority are not in favour of Gotabhaya’s capitalist economic policies. Muslim/Tamil businessmen will vote for Gotabhaya??? I think you have mistaken Mahinda with Gotabhaya. Over 50% people in the country are against him given his history, irrespective of party politics. Even if Mahinda tells, a large percentage of Mahinda’s own people won’t vote for Gotabhaya. Your assumption is applicable to Colombo-based business/elite community. They want someone to remove their garbage and clean their roads. Gotabhaya fits in that category. That is all they talk about in favour of Gotabhaya. The majority in Colombo don’t even give credit to his contribution to war victory. Your assumption that “Muslim/Tamil community in the business class will vote for Gota for the super capitalism policy of Mahinda” shows that you’ve no idea how Muslims/Tamils behave in an election. Unlike Sinhalese business class, Muslim and Tamil super wealthy businessmen don’t depend on politics. Sinhalese small/medium/large businesses collapse based on the change of governments as seen today, but it is not the same with Muslim/Tamil businesses.
Your assumption of a repetition of 2010 in 2019 is 100% accurate for Mahinda, not for Gotabhaya as there is a huge difference between the two.
Fielding Gotabhaya is a huge risk for Mahinda and I don’t think he/country is ready to take that risk.

Dear gentleman, in 2015 presidential election all anti Mahinda parties came togethe r under one alliance and 95% of floating votes casted to maithree what was the result maithree only won this election by 400000 votes .mahindas modern slfp was made 2005 on wards this is purely a capitalist party and only a real capitalist party in srilanka.they made this 20 billion USD economy in to 80 billion USD in just 10 years, made the percapital income in to 3800usd from 1000 USD .they brought 1.6 billion USD foreign direct investment in 2014.they build high class infrastructre and urban development.this economic system is not a system of poor jr ,premadasa or chandrikas mixed economic system.this is a architecture of super capitalism.this system made the entire business community and middle and upper middle class to became the die heart supporters of modern slfp.this business community. Is purely a capitsts.you saw this capitalist in shangrila hotel.for this capitalist the innocent poor parties like Jr,premadasas unp or wijeweeras JVP are only a jokers and bite and rajspaksas and modern slfp are the masters for them .what eve r you and me talk or write we are also like jokers to the like the parties like unp or JVP.you have based this percentage of vote only based on local govern ment election but I took the results of last ten years.but the percentage you mentioned is also not correct their will be the vote percentage has to be add with maharagama thirapane mahiyanganw beruwala ,bandarawela weligama, which were contested by pohottuwa under different party. You know gota is more popular among Sinhalese and closer 65% of Sinhalese will vote for him.and among the votes of maithrees 11% atleast 6% will go to gota
The main point is if the anti mahinda votes divided in to three JVP,unp, and slfp with 23% votes what can innocent poor unp do.

          thilan

Your this comment made me laugh. Are you really for them or against them? Or are you trying to steal typical capitalist-minded UNP votes for Gotabhaya in vain?
So this party, Mahinda’s “modern SLFP” is a super capitalist party, according to you. Does Mahinda know about this? I don’t think this was formed in 2005, it could be in 2010 as when Mahinda came into power, the SLFP followed Right-wing Socialism. If it was a capitalist party, I don’t think Leftists would form an Alliance with SLFP.
(As per the records, the traditional SLFP was/is Centre-Left.)
So, Mahinda’s modern SLFP brought USD 1.6 billion FDI in 2014. How much is left now? They sold a valuable land in the heart of Colombo and down South to Shangri-la and sold the sea adjacent to Colombo to China (to their credit, Yahapalanaya converted it to a lease agreement.) How about the debt mountain? Can you tell me what was their plan (2010-2015) to pay off the massive debt? It is now common knowledge that they didn’t have any plan. Mahinda made some installment payments on ad-hoc basis. If Mahinda’s super capitalist modern SLFP, doing really good, why did he call for an early election? His “super capitalist” government was reckless in taking massive loans and I dare say they created “ad-hoc projects” purely to take loans.
65% of Sinhalese will vote Gotabhaya????? ha ha ha…. Tell him to try. I have no objection. So he will contest under this “modern SLFP aka Hotu Pohottuwa?.” You are right, he will get 10% votes of super wealthy, wealthy and the middle class. And another 10% from nowhere which will make 20% and that is way below your 65%.
For your information, people will not vote at the next Presidential Election as per your predictions based on past results. The majority of the Sinhalese population have no political affiliation. That means their choice will be independent and they are the people who will make the difference in 2019.

If Gotabhaya contests, then there will be independent people who will contest against Gotabhaya.
As repeatedly pointed out, Sri Lanka is not going back to 2010-2015 era and the economic policies will not be continued from the point they stopped. The next President is not a Rajapaksa. 100% guaranteed.

not a single self respecting muslim, tamil and fair minded sinhalese will vote for gotha. . muslims had their function inviting gotha , as usual to be on the safe side but they are no fools to support him after aluthgama and his patronage for podubala sena..if his interaction with muslims is really true he will loose all chavinistic sinhala votes. all democratic forces should get together more than in 2015 to defeat this menance.

Ranil who sold Magampura Port to China is now on the way to sell Mattala Airport to India. Then he will sell Trinco harbour to some other country and brag about “reducing the debt burden”. He is selling our virgin forests and valuable lands to foreigners to “reduce the debt burden.” He has outsourced many routine government duties to western foreign companies at an enormous cost. Many state enterprises were already sold to foreigners to “reduce debt burden.”. For Kantale sugar factory, Yahapalanaya has chosen an Indian bidder over more suitable local bidders. This is how the “educated Prime Minister” reduce the debt burden. This is like a drug addict selling all his assets and then steal and sell other people’s belongings to find money to buy drugs.
    .
In addition to selling country’s most valuable assets, Ranil has taken massive borrowings within the last 3 years, robbed temple money, earned a vast income by imposing high taxes on people and increasing fines and service charges but nobody knows what he did with the money.
    .
If Mahinda didn’t build airports and ports, Ranil will have nothing to sell other than wild sanctuaries, Sigiriya rock, Samanala Kanda, Buddhist stupas, Kataragama Devale and massive irrigation tanks built by our Kings.
    .
To choose Ranil as the next President in late 2019, Sri Lankan people should be very very stupid.
In 2020, Sri Lankan voters will break all the rules in politics and punish UNP rulers by washing them away definitively.

Champawathi, selling and giving them on a lease are two different things that any country would practise through bilateral transactions.
So even if you and your bed partner sangilia Weerawanse to have got it wrong, the masses on this earth would nt see it that way.
That is why passing low level comments of you nature would not succeed misleaing folks as you think.
There is one another ballige putha from Mathugama- none other than that man Edwin seems to do anything and everything to back Rajapakshe for his own selfish gains. None of these would succeed in next electon. Mr Naganada Kodithuwakki will be our leader for sure.

A bilateral transaction? We are not talking about a building. We are talking about a port situated in the heart of a lucrative international maritime route!!!!! There is no difference between selling a port and leasing it for 99×2 years. Just tell me after 198 years, does Sri Lanka have money to buy back the fully functional Magampura port or even if we try will China give it back? People don’t need a bod partner to be realistic or understand the ludicrousness of selling an indispensable asset of a reviving economy, like Magampura port in lieu of the loans, in a grand hurry when in actual terms we have many more years to pay it back. Ranil’s futile aim is to destroy everything Mahinda built and erase Mahinda’s name.

Hold on, what is this hurry? Wait until the Presidential Election date is announced. The announcement should come in October 2019, I guess in the first week.
I am confident that you will see new contenders. Who knows may be much better choices than the present names. As Malinda reveals, there are two people already in the race, who are not politicians.
As someone from the public, I would like to see all the main contenders appear before the TV (preferably not on SIRASA or Swarnavahini) and present their policies on economic, political and social sectors. Then CT can open up their forum for people to pose questions at their choice contenders. I wish there is a forum in Sinhala too.

Man tell us how you would pay off the debts in moutains left by [edited out] Rajapakshe ?

Just talking like the men sitting on the village culverts, you just add counter arguments. I dont know why you hve been doing so..

A the time, [edited out] left, no interest of the huge loans were there. They had been in the grace period of them. Just after the new govt formed in, all the interests and plus installments started to be paid off.
That got collected in billions. The state have no proper income.
How would on the earth you guys would solve the problem.

If [edited out] got elected, no doubt, by today, things woulld have been festated like a wound, since the bugger did not knoweven to cut extra expensidutre by his foreign entourages,.
We are not reborn, we perfectlly know how all came into to being.

Champawathi you may be good at pefroming oldest profesion to Rajapkashe goons, but for economic based issues, you are just a barber style personality. We dont have much time to hang on with this lady.

When Ranil fielded Maithree as the Presidential candidate in 2015, they both were aware of the debt burden. Didn’t they promise a better job than Mahinda?
            Why cry now?
Although I don’t agree with Mahinda’s economic policies and the way he invested money in some of the development projects, everybody can see what he did with the money. Ranil also took massive foreign and local loans in billions for the last 3 years, but nobody can see what he did with the money.
This may be news to you, but Mahinda started paying off loan installments with a portion of the principal too. That is how it should be.
I don’t know what you meant by Mahinda’s entourages, as far as I know as the President, he attended international conferences, meetings and summits on invitation.
But why don’t you never utter a word about a large number of foreign trips undertaken by Maithree and Ranil? Within 3 1/2 years, Maithree has made 30 foreign trips (some countries multiple times) and attended 5 multilateral summits.
Ranil has made 16 foreign trips (including the latest – Qatar).
If they are genuine in country’s progress, first thing they should have done was curtailing their penchant for visiting foreign countries. 46 foreign trips altogether, within 41 months !!!!!! Can you justify this?
About the other things mentioned in your comment: I have nothing to do with Rajapaksas. But I wish I knew Mahinda long before, at least post-war. If I was interested in politics at least run upto the Presidential Election in 2015, I could have supported him. He was only short of 4.5 lakhs of votes.
About the solutions: The next Presidential Election is in just 18 months. Have patience. I support Mahinda’s choice EXCEPT a Rajapaksa.

“The condition, the shared bottom-line, must be defeating any Rajapaksa who shows his face.”

Is this Democracy? Perhaps you are many of those who do not respect the constitution, no wonder you want to change it. Under the present law, Gota can run for President. Unless the Citizenship issue gives a way out, in which case nothing to worry.

You should know by now, Mr. David, but let me give you a lesson on who Democracy works: the candidates you like and the candidates you don’t like, for example people with a certain Sinhalese last name, if eligible, run for office in an election. The people decide who wins (actually some of the people plus the prejudiced minorities who only think of the good of their country we know)

As I have said earlier, if you don’t like Democracy, elect a dictator – Ranil will do, or Premadasa. That way we can have a 17 years of peaceful growth.

What an unguarded gibberish from Vanguard. An opinion against a bunch of pretenders is not against Democracy. Prof. Kumar David has aired his thoughts on it. After all minorities or not we all have an equal say in wanting to advance the cause of democracy. For you to flatly spew venom against choices made by a section of the electorate is quite ludicrous. Who here is not wanting democracy, you or Prof. Kumar David?

Democracy is people’s choice, not who an individual may like.Obviously David thinks that in the name of democracy the Rajapakses should not contest. That view has to be put to the test at an election. David and you may like Eelam but most of the country may not agree with you.The best test is at an election. Be patient it is getting closer by the day. We can then see whther the country agrees with Davi d and you.

      Vanguard
Democracy means respecting the fact that even minorities have a right to determine who will rule over them.
If they try to change the Constitution, Sinhalese have a capacity and strength to stop them.
If the minorities think the “bottom-line must be defeating any Rajapaksa”, the first thing should be understanding the reason for their animosity, whether it is not getting the self-rule for the North or something else. If the reason is the former, they should know that they won’t get self-rule from even a non-Rajapaksa Presidential hopeful in that side.
The challenge for the Sinhalese candidate in 2019 is winning the hearts and minds of ordinary Tamils and Muslims while earning their trust and respect but not depend on their votes.

Kumar David: YOu know Ranil is not a winning candidate. Otherwise, Why he presented Sarah fonseka one time, Maithripala sirisena the second time. Ranil says he will contest only if Rajapakses contest. why is that.
