Condemn The Vice Chancellor Of J’pura University For Killing Innocent Dogs – An Online Petition Launched

Rights activists have launched an online petition seeking justice for J’pura University dogs who were dumped/killed inhumanly and to condemn the Vice Chancellor of the University for ordering this inhumane act.

Professor Sampath Amaratunge – VC

The petition said: The petition is to ask for justice for the innocent dogs who were living inside of the premises of University of Jayawardhanapura. They had being there from birth and they were very friendly and attached wit all the kind students and staff. The students confirm that there was no harm from them. The students had formed few students clubs for the welfare of these dogs and they took care of their food and medicines both.

Even they has arranged a sterilization and vaccination camp to be held on 16th April and despite that the Vice Chancellor had conducted this brutal act. We highly condemn this babaric and unprofessional act of the vice chancellor and of the pest control company called “Ultra clean” who performed the dumping, which is illegal to be done by a pest control company and of the PHI who supported this.

We would like to ask those who are involved in this illegal act, who is going to take the responsibility of these innocent lives?? Who is going to answer the young students who did a lot day and night to save these innocent lives?? Who is going to bear the responsibility of the public live in the area where you dumped these dogs in??as it’s illegal to dump dogs and also it creates a threat to the public health. And also we would like to ask the vice chancellor that how ethical is it to hire a pest control company to catch dogs??

And we are highly disgust with what happened as vice chancellor failed to respect hon Minister Faizar Musthapah’s guarantee that the newly appointed animal welfare committee will be definitely informed if any dog catching or removing is taking place. So we compel hon Minister Muzthapah also to take an action against this brutal and unethical act. Please sign this petition and give your support to save these innocent animals.

Stray dogs should be eliminated, pets dogs should be with their owners.

The same should be done at the Independence Avenue.

Stray dogs should be killed and eliminated as they have become a menace today.Leave animal rights aside for the moment and think of the people of this country first.

The Government spends millions of Rupees per year for anti-rabies injections after its citizens are bitten by these stray dogs.

Like everything that we have dine wrong after the British gave us that so called Independence this is one just one of the many screw ups we have done so far.

The DOG TAX has to be brought back and having a dog as a pet should have a TAX of at least Rs.5,000/= per year.(Over to you Mr. Finance Minister, to introduce in the next budget),and owners should be fined if their dogs are found on the streets, ONCE, TWICE & the next time JAILED.

See what would happen! This is the solution and if any stupid people want to safeguard these dogs they could always join the errant dog owners in JAIL.

      Sampath well done.

When I was in the Uni many years ago it was filthy due to garbage and stray dogs.

Thank you for eliminating the dogs and hopefully you are tackling the garbage issue as well.

        Jagath,

“When I was in the Uni many years ago it was filthy due to garbage and stray dogs.”

Garbage means food. No garbage= no dogs unless somebody feeds them.

“Thank you for eliminating the dogs and hopefully you are tackling the garbage issue as well.”

It appears that the dogs have been removed to another place not eliminated. People will bring new dogs.

Please get priorities right. We humans seem to control the world, and we keep upsetting the balance of nature. There are too many of us humans around! Control our human population first!!

Stop being softly sentimental. Stray dogs have to be eliminated. Do it as humanely as possible. Spay the “she-dogs”; but that, too, costs money, has to be organised. If you can’t do that, shoot the dogs.

Take the over-all picture. Only man can be guilty, because he has a brain, and ought to have a conscience, too. All animals are “innocent”: crocodiles, leopard, bears, elephants, rhinos, gorillas – even disease-causing microbes, probably! All living beings (flora included) have a life-span, and then die.

As it is, our actions may result in the extinction of all those life forms mentioned in the paragraph above. We proliferate life forms that are useful to us (cows for their milk, chickens for their eggs – but of course, many of us finally gobble up their carcasses: “innocent dogs dogs join in the feast as well!). And those parasitic on us: rats, cockroaches, lice, also proliferate!

Pardon me, I know little of the details of Biology. This is one of the few planets that support life forms. Please manage it sustainably!

I’m old; I must die soon. I haven’t yet done the rational thing: donate my corpse to a Medical Faculty.

I live in a village; lots of puppies abandoned near me. Eliminate STRAY dogs. I know that cared for pets CAN be adorable.

      SOLVE our human ETHNIC problem!

        Sinhala_Man,

“Stray dogs have to be eliminated. Do it as humanely as possible. Spay the “she-dogs”; but that, too, costs money, has to be organised.”

Some years ago the Government Vets in Jaffna and maybe the rest of the country were supposed to spay bitches free of charge if the PHI gave a recommendation letter. Otherwise the cost was 7-800 for the medicines.

“I live in a village; lots of puppies abandoned near me.”

I think that this problem is caused not by the stray dogs but by the abandoned family pets. The abandoned puppies are without their mother aren’t they? Instead of spaying their bitches or injecting a contraceptive (same as for women) it is common for people to regularly abandon unwanted puppies.

There should be a public awareness campaign and action offering free of charge spaying without bureaucracy.

My experience is that stray dogs are very rarely aggressive. Pet dogs that defend their homes and owners especially children can be aggressive. There are some dogs that chase me every day and none of them is a stray!

In more developed countries pet dogs are not having endless litters that are unwanted. Abandoning any animal will be punished.

          Dear Lone Wolf,

I agree with ALL that you say. Well, let’s get all bitches spayed. Until such time as that campaign is successfully implemented, shoot strays.

I know that you will be shocked at my viciousness in this respect. I’m sorry, but I really think that we’ll have to run both campaigns simultaneously.

You and Rajan both seem to be tender-hearted vegans!

What about the two-legged dogs called politicians?

They are throwing, voted in by other two–legged of the same species, and protected by the other two–leggeds.

      Why double standard?

      Omar,

Humans who have no respect for life of animals should be gassed to death.

Humans who sacrifice animals based on rubbish religious rituals from medieval times should also be dealt with likewise.

Those who treat treat animals with kindness will be exempted from the gas chamber.

      Deal? Thanks!

We don’t adopt strays, we as a society great animal lovers and animal shelters as either jokes, irrelevant hobbies for rich people, or wastes of money, and treat dogs merely as security devices. We don’t fund animal shelters or charities, are opposed to spending on rounding up and sterilising strays, or operating kill shelters.

This country has some major psychiatric disorder where we want to both have our cake and eat it as well.

    “Killing Innocent Dogs”

All dogs are not innocent. There are people who have dog phobia. Dogs should not run around in a public place as it effects the peaceful environment so much. Although the present Vice Chancellor is not the best person to be a vice chancellor what he has done regarding the “dog menace” is commendable. The Rights activists should start doing something worthwhile

To truly love animals, you’ve got to understand nature.

I don’t see Sapni as having such understanding. I don’t think that she could be much of an environmentalist or conservationist.

      Daham ,

“The Rights activists should start doing something worthwhile.”

The Rights activists should start doing something worthwhile, like tying the dogs they love, rabid or not, so that the the dogs they love will not harm the people.

Can the rights activists tie the rabid politicians and monks as well? Some are rabid, and they do kill innocent citizens.

Let the animal lovers and dog activists take each and every street dog to their houses and narture them, we have no qualms. These street dogs are a real menace to the society and most riders meet with accidents in the nights when some of these vultures give chase to bike riders, not to mention the threat they pose when walking alone in nights. Go to National Hospital and see how many are hospitalized due to street dog bites.

Try not to be rich arm chair critics travelling in posh cars. Think of the poor masses, like us.

Over 30 sterilized, vaccinated and cared-for community dogs at the Sri Jayawardenepura University have been rounded up and removed from the premises, students allege.

Students attached to the Sri Jayawardenepura University said two vehicles (Dimo Battas) had arrived at the university premises on April 8 and 9 and injected the dogs and taken them away.

When questioned the Vice Chancellor of the University had said the dogs had been taken to a shelter. He later contradicted his statement and said the dogs had been set free at the Dehiwala beach area, the student unions said.

However none of the dogs – including pups – have been found at the two locations.

The students unions have held a press conference and made a police entry in this regard and are pressurizing university authorities to tell them where the dogs are so that they can be rescued and taken care of again.

They allege the act is illegal and inhuman and not the proper method to deal with a problem.

Nimal the dog lover, will take responsibility if anyone gets rabbis, vaccinated dog gets rabbis moment it get in touch with another rabbis dog. Don’t put human lives at stake due to your ignorance. Why didn’t take them to your house.

      Nimal,

“He later contradicted his statement and said the dogs had been set free at the Dehiwala beach area,”

Is not abandoning animals a crime called cruelty against animals? Please make a police complaint.

Are stray dogs on a beach better than on the campus? Are vaccinated and sterilized community dogs stray dogs?

File a RTI request to find what kind of instructions the VC gave and how much money was paid to the company who did the dirty work. The PHI also should have documentation. There must be records to expose the facts.

What is the truth behind the story that Muslims are against dogs? Are they against stray dogs or all dogs? Why is that? What do they advocate with regard to dogs?

    • 2
      1

MUSLIMS ARE AGAINST DOGS……….You are correct Nimal ….We have heard that…Also recently we saw in the papers a Muslim Minister Has forwarded a proposal to the government to get rid of the street dogs…….which all dog lovers should be concerned for..and act accordingly….We severely condemns this …Just see if there is a connection at that end for this affair also………Animals are a creation of god according to christianity…………no body has a power to take their lives……..and the persons who perform cruelty against animals shall be dealt severely by nature

      • 2

Muslims are predominantly the butchers of the world and don’t eat dog meat like the chinese or koreans or they would topple the government.
There are dogs who maximize their olfactory system and extract phenomenal results (German Shepherds, Blood Hounds, other search and rescue, narcotics sniffing, bomb sniffing, etc dogs) then there are breeds that do not maximize their olfactory system efficiently yet can still out perform a human at least a few hundred fold (evidenced by – a male smelling a female in heat from miles away).
I found it wonderful that dogs smell in “minute detail” rather than blanket numbers. I found it really funny that human technology isn’t refined enough to measure a dogs sense in human numbers.

These animal rights activists create a big fuss over animals but remain totally silent when human beings are raped, killed, tortured, disappeared and summarily executed. Animal rights are more important to them than human rights.

These people seem unable to think clearly. They have posed the question, “How ethical is it to hire a pest control company to catch dogs?” This seems to suggest that it would not have been so unethical if they had hired some other type of company to catch those dogs!

UPDATE ON THE ABDUCTED DOGS IN J’PURA UNIVERSITY
    1. We still do not know what has happened to the missing dogs. We have followed every lead we got however still there isn’t a sign of a single one

    2. A press release was sent out to print media ON THE 13TH aPRIL( if you have any more contacts do let us know)

    3. Sirasa has releaseD the details of our press conference and the VC has responded stating that the reason behind these actions were dog bites, however when confirmed with the hospitals through unofficial sources there were no such records.

    4. Our petition already reached more than 5300 just in two days, so please keep sharing guys (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/en-…/takeaction/235/762/273/… )

    5. The University authorities have been trying to influence the concerned parties especially the students, security and cleaning staff as well as the media.

    6. It seems that more dogs are missing than we originally counted. We are not yet sure f they have been also taken away or if they are hiding in fear

    7. On 12th April there was a police inquiry held. However the responsible pest control company did not attend, nor did the Vice Chancellor or his representatives, stating the establishments were closed for Avurudu Holidays. The police is also seeming to be taking a backseat in the investigation matters ( so anyone who can help us with this regard please do contact us)

    8. #thedogsmadeuniahappyplace campaign is still making it’s rounds ( AGAIN! Sharing is caring!)
    9. We are starting an e mail campaign to show how the public is disgusted by this inhumane and irresponsible behavior.
    10. People are coming forward to adopt a few of the remaining dogs. We will be making transport arrangements for them

WE ARE HEARTBROKEN BUT WE WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL WE CAN ENSURE EVERY ONE OF THEM IS SAFE

Why don’t these people protest about daily slaughter of thousands of cattle, goats and chickens?
How about stray cats? Hundreds of kittens (and puppies) are dumped in neighbours’ gardens, or on the roadside daily.
The Anti Rabies Campaign killed hundreds of thousands of stray dogs from the seventies onwards and thus prevalence if rabies was controlled.
If stray dogs are not killed, there will be an outbreak of rabies again.
The PHI is only doing his duty according to the law.
It is legal to eliminate stray dogs.

If people wish to domesticate dogs, these should be certified free of transmissible diseases by veterinary surgeons and ownership registered.

Well said, these dogs lovers are too infected with Rabies, that’s what they are so found of these stray dogs, and not bothered about people dying of rabies. We cannot let mentally sick people like this Nimal to put public life’s in danger. These stray dog lovers too need to be vaccinated.

Hats off to VC for taking timely action. No one cares for the trauma undergone by people who get bitten by these stray dogs. If the animal lovers are so concerned they should start a shelter or take these dogs home. These animal lovers are shouting hoarse since they get foreign funding in dollars and not because they love dogs.

Sri Lanka has a stray dog and rabies problem. There is no need to sound virtuous and holy over the humane euthanasia of stray dogs. It is either that or allowing people to die of rabies. So toughen up darlings, our country is up there in the world with the most murders, suicides, alcoholics and similar failures. The stray dog problem is a minor one and needs to be addressed. Humane euthanasia is a preferred method. It is not the same as a knife plunged into another Sri Lankan which is a common occurrence.

The VC’s initiative in this instance is most commendable.

Let all dog lovers starting with the originator of this petition take each of the stray dogs home, feed them and care for them including vaccinating them with anti-rabies.

It is bad enough, tax payer’s money is used to educate those with incorrect priorities. Should tax money be utilised for welfare of stray dogs as well?

Well done VC, keep up the good work.

      Jurassic100,

“Should tax money be utilised for welfare of stray dogs as well?”

      Yes.

Vaccinated dogs do not get rabies and cannot spread it.

Sterilized bitches will not breed and thus there will soon be no stray dogs unless people keep abandoning their dogs and puppies.

These animal lovers are human murderers!. They want to let the stay dogs as it is and let them bite the innocent public and let them die with the rabies. If they really love the animals let them take them to their home and keep them in their bed rooms. They simply can’t do charity on others expenses. If ever any of these stay dogs bites our children these animal lovers/human murderers should take full responsibility. We the public have been too kind to these lunatics all these days.

“Even they has arranged a sterilization and vaccination camp to be held on 16th April and despite that the Vice Chancellor had conducted this brutal act.”

Another Lankawe’ excessive administration displayed by VC. He proved himself to be not just vice, but also vise gripping, vicious VC.

A poor country like Lankawe may not able to show much compassion to the legal protection of the Animal’s right. But aren’t there 20,000 monks in Lankawe. What did Buddha told to these 20,000 monks? Can’t they spend a part of their life for the peaceful life and death of these animals? When they see and feel jealous of Muslims traders and butchers earning money on beef, they talk of self immolating for “Pasu Vathai”(Cow killing).

Time for Lankawe to start to think of the basic Buddhist principle – all the living things are equal.
