Cremating Muslim Covid Dead Bodies; Sri Lanka Is Right – Whole World Is Wrong?

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

In a video interview with CHAMUDITHA early December 2020, Dr Nihal Abeysinghe, Senior Government Virologist and Epidemiologist explained that corona Virus dead bodies could be either buried or cremated. He said there was no question of germs spreading through water in the grave and causing health hazards to the livin

The World Health Organization (WHO) advice was followed by countries all over the world. However Sri Lanka remains hell bent on cremating Muslim corona virus dead dismissing their religious sentiments.

The government claims that its decision was based on the health ministry technical committee advise which does not have a virologist. This was endorsed by Professor Tissa Vitarana who said there is no virologist in the committee set up to deal with this issue.

Prof Tissa Vitarana,a specialist in the fields of bacteriology and virology, was not in the committee.

The question is how a committee, without a virologist, advise the government on this extremely sensitive issue without realizing the consequences.

Even India run by extremist leaders, hostile to minorities had allowed burial.

To Muslims worldwide burying their dead bodies is a religious duty and Islam has told how it should be done. To a Muslim death means the end of life in this world and the beginning of life in the hereafter.

Up to now Muslims who died of corona virus were cremated arbitrarily in Sri Lanka while loved ones had no say at all. They were also denied the chance to do a PCR test in private to confirm the government tests as there were reports in circulation that many who died natural death were also cremated.

Throughout the country and beyond there were severe criticisms against cremating corona dead bodies. Muslims were seething in anger claiming that this policy has nothing to do with health or medical reasons, but to harass Muslims and make them radicalised. Some even suspect that this perhaps may be an effort to provoke those who are believers in their faith.

This matter was taken up in Parliament by both Muslims and non-Muslim members alike appealing to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and the government to change this policy. No response from the government.

A team led by former parliamentarian Ali Zahir Moulana took up the issue in the Supreme Court where it was rejected without giving any reason. We citizens are unaware why the Supreme Court rejected the plea of the minorities. We do not know whether the Petitioners had not complied with the Court rules when filing Petitions.

In the midst of all these comes the shocking cremation of a 20 day old baby who was admitted to hospital at 10.45 am on December 7. The baby died at 4.15 pm following day on December 8 and was cremated at 4 pm on December 9. They even failed to inform the parents when the baby died, but was told about the death only when they rang up.

Baby’s father was keen to do a PCR test at a private hospital, the hospital staff refused and forced the father to sign the paper – perhaps authorizing cremation .

Later they were told to go to Borella cemetery for cremating the body without his consent. When the father asked why this rush to cremate the baby’s body while number of bodies  were awaiting cremation there was no response from the doctors and others.

“I have no say and the doctors and others did not even bother to answer my questions but all out to cremate the baby with no human feeling” said the baby’s father in a video interview.

In another video clip in circulation on Wednesday 16 December 2020 a Muslim complained that his wife died at Kalubowila Hospital and was not allowed for him and his children to see the body and not allowed to do a PCR test in private. They were only adamant demanding his signature for cremation.

Meanwhile the cremation of the 20 day old baby was given wide publicity worldwide especially in Muslim countries, the most sincere friends of Sri Lanka and helped the island in times of crisis. In the gulf countries baby’s posters were displayed in vehicles. These are countries from where a million Sri Lankans are sending for the economic survival of our debt ridden country US $ 20 million EVERY SINGLE DAY, on an average!

Sri Lankan Muslims living in European countries staged a demonstration last week in front of the Sri Lankan High Commission in London protesting against cremating Muslim corona dead .

The negative publicity to the country was such that a religious scholar spoke about this in the grand mosque in Nigeria. Do the extremists who think the world is part of Sri Lanka and not Sri Lanka is part of the world, realize the devastating impact of this negative publicity on Sri Lanka.

Since the end of the ethnic war the government has abandoned Muslim countries and established close ties with violently anti-Muslim countries such as America, India, Israel and China and suspected to be implementing their evil agendas against the island’s Muslims. What the so called racist patriots who divided communities and destroyed communal harmony fail to understand is that these countries are here with their own agenda.

Their common agenda is to promote hatred towards Islam and violence against Muslims and divide communities in the island.

This is the reason why many fear that Sinhala Buddhist theocratic government will not work in a multi-racial, multi religious, multi linguistic, multi-cultural country like Sri Lanka. Our neighbor India under RSS front BJP is a classic example where all opposition parties have got together to defeat the BJP Hindutva forces which brought nothing but disaster to India.

It is common knowledge that the island’s Muslim community, the most peaceful of the three communities and suffered a great deal during the 30 year ethnic war, has been subjected to  violent persecution causing immense suffering ever since the end of the ethnic war in May 2009.

Their residential and commercial establishments were burnt, mosques attacked and desecrated and demonized. Racist thugs were given free hand to terrorize the Muslim community with government patronage. This included Buddhist monks who instigated the organized carnage at Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town. Didn’t these acts of violence against Muslims lead some misguided elements to cause the shocking Easter Sunday attacks? We are anxiously awaiting the report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry for the answers.

Fed up of violence and lawlessness Muslims joined others and voted Maithiripala Sirisena-Ranil Wickremasinghe team to power, only to realize they were no better, when the anti-Muslim violence continued climaxing in the Easter Sunday massacre exploited to demonize Islam and unleash violence on the community besides burning and destroying properties.

Almost a year and eight months later today truth began to unfold showing the Muslim community had nothing to do with the Easter Sunday Massacre, but a suspected conspiracy for political gains.

In the midst comes the unbearable cremation of Muslim corona dead. And worse for no logical scientific reasons. Some think that the 1.6 billion Muslims are all fools merely because their leaders are dealers and can be bought over.

What many have forgotten is that if not for the Muslims, mainly from the North and the East, steadfastly supporting the government during the three decades of ethnic war, Sri Lankan would have been divided two decades ago.

Sri Lanka does not belong to one community. It belongs to all.

One should not forget that it was racist politics of the majority community turned Sri Lanka, a shining example for the entire third world during the time of its independence in 1948 for political and economic stability, communal harmony, into  one of the most corrupt and bankrupt countries in the world today.

Meanwhile, a silent protest got underway in Colombo where white handkerchiefs and cloth were tied outside the cemeteries, protesting the mandatory cremation only policy and remembering those victims who were forcefully cremated.

When will the leaders of this country understand that Sri Lanka is getting increasingly isolated from the rest of the world? Can we live like frogs in a well?

    Dear Mr Farook

    Thank you

With all due respect to our fellow citizens who passed away in the Covid I pause the following equation

    (1) We have a very high population growth in SL and she is very limited in space? even without the Covid issues should we not be cremating our loved ones on the long run as a National collective action??

    (2) I have lost a great friend of mine who was a Christian in Malaysia and his wish to be cremated was respected-Electric Cremation.

    (3) Both my parents were cremated too (I had to do the torching culturally/religiously that has affected me to date too) yes it was a Hindu ritual……..But thinking out of the box not sure about the wood used too as this is not sustainable any more and air pollution too?.

I think we should as a Nation look into Electric Cremation/Retort as a standard beyond all our Cultural/Religious needs will go a long way to respect the Environment too and I think this removes any politics/misuse of the Dead for our own bigotry/hurting the families more etc.

We are using everything that is modern in the world without questioning too many things (progressive) and at times we need to apply mindfulness at least during a pandemic time, disasters we had like the Tsunami etc.

If I understood correctly, Muslims think if a Muslim person is cremated that person will not be able to reach the right destination that a person is expected to reach after death.
Can Muslims give evidences that Muslims who were cremated did not reach the right destination?

      Eagle,
If Muslims could prove that, then you could prove that a six-inch tooth in Kandy is human.

      Some people distort Quran.

This is what the Quran says. There is no need to bury. Burial is plain superstition. Sadly most Sri Lankans believe in superstition.

“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds – their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Beneath them rivers will flow in the Gardens of Pleasure. Their call therein will be, ‘Exalted are You, O Allah,’ and their greeting therein will be, ‘Peace.’ And the last of their call will be, ‘Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds!’” (Q. 10:9-10)

If MUSLIM SRILANKENS are to be attacked this way you should be able to see you in a mirror let alone today. Do you think that our sinhalaya led by bp from Madamulan are better than some tribes in amazona `?
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRwJ3Wf2TB0
Not a week ago, Meeharaka led groups gave the publicity to ” PANIBEEMA as a panacea” for COVID infections, but it has now become a joke as of today.

CAN WE AS SINHALAYA BE PROUD OF MINISTER OF HEALTH ?
CAN WE AS SINHALA BE PROUUD OF THE INCUMBENT SPEAKER LOOKING AT THE MANNER BALLIGE PUTHAS DRANK THAT UNRECOGNIZED MIXTURE MADE BY A MAD PERSON ?

I think our sinhalayas overestimate their race on and on. I am proud of some monks that have balls to call a spade a spade despite high chapter monks are mum today.

We can only imagine the outrage had those who made these racist rules, and their racist Buddhist supporters would feel if the bodies of the their dead are forcefully placed atop a tower exposed to the sun, and to scavenging birds, for some reason or the other. In this case all what the Muslim are asking is that country follow the regulations that the rest of the world, even Western nations, are already following. Our “compassionate” president, and his regime seems to forget their religious teachings most of the time. They go to great lengths to keep their Sinhala Buddhist base happy, at the expense of the helpless minority.

If anyone has an iota of brain matter he should realize that SL as a nation failed and it must be split into 3 mono-ethnic nations. Muslims will be able to do whatever they please in Muslim Elam. Tamils will be able to do whatever they please in Tamil Elam. Sinhalese will be able to do whatever they please in Sinhala Only Elam.

Imposing Muslim demands on others is unfair.
Imposing Sinhala preferences on others is unfair.
Imposing Tamil demands on others is unfair.

Let’s peacefully compromise and split the island for lasting peace and dignity for all. Until that happens riots, war, discrimination and racism will and must continue.

      Dear Gatam

I was thinking what you suggesting is a good way to control population growth in SL…….then again with all the blunders/killing spree since Independence we still manage to grow four fold since the 1930’s??

Really very Horney bunch la you all??

“It is common knowledge that the island’s Muslim community, the most peaceful of the three communities and suffered a great deal during the 30 year ethnic war, has been subjected to violent persecution causing immense suffering ever since the end of the ethnic war in May 2009. “
We have been telling that like frog destroys it with its own mouth, Muslim writers and leaders destroying the country and them. Latheef, in the past has been just sitting & dividing Tamils and Muslims and issued lazy threat to Sinhalese, after war. He went even to create opinion that Muslims are not Tamils. Other Muslims writers copied or even directly quoted Latheef’s threats and reissuing. After Aluthgama, Latheef reduced the strength and frequency. If Latheef’s 2 weeks memory is not working out, he should go back & read all his past essays, before release one more new.
Here Latheef is giving the accounts after Badiuddin’s Standardization. But Sinhalese ledger has brought forward balance from 1915, when they were going in peaceful procession. The credits there are Hezbollah building Sharia University from smuggled foreign money in billions and the Tamils Churches bombing in 4/21. If Latheef wants Sinhala leaders reconsider their decision, then Latheef is going to write something to convince Sinhalese instead of this intentional bluffing and annoying them further.

Tamils do not burn children, if that was the request of the father or mother of the family. Even adults’ bodies, depending on court cases and other external reasons they don’t cremate. But when Muslims refused to accept bodies and after 10 of them got piled, then government took the child’s body to Kanathai without begging too much the Muslim community. Now even it is another 40days child’s body is cremated. Muslims leaders and writers taking childred’s issue highly inflamed, while the 40 days old child’s parents did not do any extra-ordinary complains about that. So this Muslims’ hard campaign is going harden more the government.
Moulana, by messaging for Ranil, split Karuna from LTTE. When Karuna ready to go with Moulana to Colombo, they pack a suitcase full of LTTE documents and came to government with the idea of annihilating LTTE. But Ranil was sacked by CBK so only Old King used Moulana and Karuna’s maps to defeat LTTE. LTTE lost hope on Ranil CFA agreement and it became clear to them that CFA was not anything different from Banda – Chelva pact or many other documents Lankawe had made and tore off. Karuna was leader of the team that was negotiating for LTTE. After Moulana and Ranil had stolen Karuna, negotiations did not move even an inch.

    Dear Folks

I got to say this is how we ended up where we are today observing our responses to the Authors points ion view??

Never stopped and paused and asked questions objectively and found solutions (so..so….simple activity and very simple solutions exists) to make thing happen to make changes and evolve as a community and a Nation??

Then we went about generalising something “which is a birth right of of each and everyone” that is to pause question and point to possible alternative solutions and asked to be given considerations….so we got on this path of “blind leading the blind” in each community and then the going got tough we threatened each other attune point and sighted this as democracy??…………..none of this could be further from the truth/facts and possible solutions…………a very strange group of people congregated in Sri Lanka is an amazing exception to the known rules of cohabitation/civilisations.

Millions of people with million of diverse thoughts and practices have come up with amazing solutions that around the world where we go and make a living from in other mans countries….yet “one rule” for this scenario and another “devils advocacy” for the Mother Lankan Issues……….hence others can use us/exploiting us to benefit all they need but we can not have Nation that we could be proud of???????
