Debt Relief, Reforms & Democracy

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

“Don’t buy things you can’t afford with money you don’t have to impress people you don’t like”. This quote from Dave Ramsay which applies to individuals and families may as well apply to governments also. Why did Sri Lanka borrow so much, was there proper accounting of how it was spent, how many of the projects funded by borrowed money actually met the real needs of the country, and who really benefited, are all questions that still remain unanswered. No government that approved these borrowing ever provided a balance sheet to the public. Government budgets were all about the future and not about the past. No annual budget of government ever accounts for the progress or failure of the one preceded it. The cumulative effect of this parliamentary tradition is to shift the burden of settling debts accumulated by one generation to the next. Thus, the onus of settling the accumulated debt over decades has fallen well and truly on shoulders of the Aragalaya generation. But the tragedy is the ones who were responsible for this irresponsible accumulation and reckless profligacy are still in power continuing to influence government policies and advising the President. As long as they are there should the young generation accept that responsibility?

Be that as it may, President Ranil Wickremesinghe may well go around the country and claim credit for the financial sector stability achieved under IMF tutelage, and for the “favourable” or “fair” $8 billion worth of relief from debt-restructuring negotiations. But the amount of belt tightening and sacrifice that ordinary Sri Lankans had to make to achieve that stability is another story. However, given the involvement of IMF, which has virtually taken control of Sri Lanka’s economic policy direction, the debt relief should not come as surprise to those familiar with IMF’s role in mediating between debtor nations and their creditors. The primary interest of IMF is to look after the global capitalist system. According to its ideology the moneyed class is the locomotive driving that system. Therefore, IMF primarily looks after the interests of the creditors while enabling the debtor to gain sufficient financial strength to settle the total debt in fu with whatever concessions offered by the debtor. There is no free lunch and the ball is now in Sri Lanka’s court.

There is also another factor worth reminding in this context. Sri Lanka is a strategic foothold to keep under control for American and Western interests in the ongoing Cold War in the Indian Ocean. Therefore, the little debt relief given to its government on the recommendation and supervision of IMF is more than an economic or financial gesture. IMF has done its part and will now wait and watch how RW is going to handle the little leverage he has gained in the post-debt-restructured environment.

At the end of the day all foreign debt has to be settled by producing a national surplus. Basically, there are two types of surpluses, trade surplus and budget surplus. To achieve the first the total value of exports has to exceed that of imports, and to achieve the second, total government revenue must exceed total expenditure. In both, Sri Lanka is experiencing chronic problems. In the IMF agenda the immediate focus is on reducing the fiscal deficit while expecting trade deficit to fall when economic growth resumes. So far IMF has not directly intervened in resourcing or incentivizing the domestic production sector, and RW’s two budgets were also more about fiscal consolidation than raising domestic production. The next budget too will be focusing primarily on cutting public expenditure and raising revenue, an exercise more stylistically phrased as “disciplined fiscal policy”. However, that exercise too like in previous years would be class biased. It is the citizenry at the middle and lower end of the income scale who would be asked to bear the cost of this exercise rather dis-proportionately. The so-called imputed rental income tax that is expected to be introduced in the name of a wealth tax for example is a camouflage to allow the top end of income earners to reduce its total tax liability. Economic distress for the majority is destined to prolong, and a few more rupees thrown into RW’s ‘Aswesuma’ bucket is not going to bring down the poverty rate, which is hovering around 26 percent. On the expenditure side of the ledger health and education would continue to suffer from inadequate resourcing. Public hospitals are hit by shortage of doctors, nurses and specialists while public schools are starved of trained teachers and teaching facilities. While patients find medicinal drugs at public hospitals unavailable and u affordable at private pharmacies, many families with school children find the cost of textbooks beyond their means.

Thus, in the post debt-restructured environment, preparation of the next annual budget with “disciplined fiscal policy” is going to be a challenge. However, in between that challenge and debt relief stands democracy. It is time the interim president and the government in power seek fresh mandate from voters before proceeding with any reform program. It is therefore not the economy but politics that is gripping the nation at the moment and is being watched anxiously by IMF and its shareholders. To start with, the aragalaya generation has no confidence on the sitting 225, and RW is its No.1 enemy. The fear of defeat at the ballot box has therefore driven the ones in power to look for ways and means of avoiding the election itself. The search for loopholes in the constitution to postpone an election and expecting the judiciary to adjudicate favourably over it, attempts to build a popular consensus to allow the status quo to continue by exaggerating the danger of change and the imperative to continue with reforms, and a concerted attempt to portray RW as the best man for the job are strategies dominating the political arena.

But the real danger in allowing the status quo to continue is to give license to a system that had been instrumental in creating a poly-crisis. Those who are insisting that reforms should continue without political disruption are limiting themselves to fiscal discipline and creation of an economic environment to promote exports and foreign investment. But real reforms have to go much deeper and more encompassing. RW has no wish to get rid of the prevailing political culture with its administrative lax, financial corruption, economic mismanagement, organized violence and institutional discrimination. On the contrary, he is hoping to build an economic paradise on the foundation of a culture and system which changed governments periodically but without changing the philosophy and style of governance. As a result, the so-called free market economy which that system created and operated became an organized playground to amass private wealth for greedy politicians with their mafiosi partners. State owned enterprises fell into decay at the hands of a bunch of greedy individuals related to these politicians, and as a result those enterprises have become a burden on public purse. This is why IMF is insisting on privatizing these loss-making parastatals.  Hence, the case for a radical change in governance as demanded by the Aragalaya. The knife edge economic stability for which IMF is credited with cannot remain solid without transforming the pernicious culture of political governance. NPP’s call for a social revolution to change that culture has therefore started reverberating throughout the nation and particularly among its younger generation.  An election whether Presidential or General is therefore a democratic imperative. Trying to postpone or cancel it under any pretext would only provoke mass revolts and RW’s guardians of PTA and OSA will not be able to protect the saboteurs.

The former Health Minister has been remanded and claims he was instructed to justify his mismanagement without any documentary proof. He asserts that all parties involved were aware of the poor-quality, substandard, and falsified medicines he purchased, highlighting a “blind spot” in health systems strengthening. His answer is due to immergency he pursed HE TOLd THEY TOLD and ALl TOLD after the peoplr start getting sick.
Meanwhile, numerous other individuals involved in accumulation and reckless profligacy remain in power, continuing to influence government policies and advise the President. Given this situation, should the young generation accept the responsibility of leadership and accountability while such individuals remain in power?

Dr. A.A, you are writing about a possible accounting process of borrowed money, specially from China a long time ago for the southern Hambantota port, Mattala airport and unused Stadium, when most of that money was stolen to build a non-working imaginary royal family for this nation, since the British captured the last king of Kandy in 1815, Sri Wickrama Raja Sinha. How does one account for money that’s stolen?

      DTG
Do you know what’s even worse than stealing borrowed funds? It is conniving foreign powers to compromise the national security of the nation.
Example: the hambanthota harbour project, was designed to fail right from the outset, paving the way for China to potentially seize ownership of this crucial asset.
Mara allocated about 8,000 hectares of farmland to build the Hambanthota inland port—an inherently flawed and impractical idea.
Typically, countries build ports on coastlines rather than inland.
Inland ports are usually strategic for military purposes, such as hiding nuclear submarines.
Given its location as the southernmost point in the Indian Ocean, Hambanthota is ideally positioned for accommodating Chinese submarines. It seems that the Hambanthota port was conceived with the expectation that it would eventually fall into Chinese hands, one way or another.
Can you imagine how much money was given under the table to Mara by China for such an devious and unpatriotic act?

    Dear Ameer,
    .
What we want/demand is a Presidential Election
for which nominations must be called on the 17th of July, just nine days from now.
    .
I’m so sure that AKD will win it that there is no need for me to imagine any other possible scenario. Ranil can do what he wants; he can contest that election, although I don’t think that he will. Sajith is likely to contest quite separately, and put his all into the campaign. Expect forty candidates, for our last such Presidential Election. The question arises, what if Ranil tries any more tricks? Let him! Old as I am, I will take to the streets, braving the bullets if I must!!

Let us hope that Ranil Wickremasinghe will not continue with the devilry that he has displayed for almost two years.

Dear S-M: “…..nominations must be called on the 17th of July”. NO.

The 17th of July is the date EC gets legal authority to hold the election and to decide on the dates for nomination and election.

Thanks, Douglas, you are a treasure!
        .
I wasn’t sure what that meant, really.

        .
Therefore what we can expect, I guess, is a gazette notification, to be issued on the 17th, fixing a date about a week, or even two, after that when nominations are going to be accepted.

To get this absolutely clear, nobody can apply to be President. Two other people, who are citizens of Sri Lanka, must turn up (together with the prospective candidate).

One has to to make a statement that so and so, the candidate, is his nominee for President of The Democratic, etc, of Sri Lanka, and the other has to state that he (even a “she” is allowed – how do we reform the English language so that there is one word to denote a person of either sex?) seconds that nomination.
        .
Douglas, one of the problems that we face may be that we don’t always realise that time is passing. I will submit two more comment, and then come back to this theme. “leelagemalli” knows many things, but he doesn’t understand how time passes!

        .
The nomination and seconding has to be done by citizens of Sri Lanka
(the production of the now notorious – in the pages of Colombo Telegraph, at least, NIC – number won’t do), and the nominee must also be a citizen of Lanka, but in addition must satisfy certain other criteria. Those criteria include having been a Member of Parliament, having been the President of Sri Lanka once (twice will mean disqualification) and such like.
        .
Those limitations mean that not all 15 million voters can be candidates, although we’re possibly getting close to that by now!
In 2005 there were 13 candidates, in 2010, there were 20 candidates, in 2015, there were 17 candidates, and in 2019 there were 35.
        .
Those 35 included a guy living less than 2 miles from me:
        .
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samaraweera_Weerawanni
        .
He’s still living, aged 81. Will he contest again? He has been a member of Parliament, with Ranil Wickremasinghe. Ranil ought to dig up old records for him to realise just how old Ranil is.
        .
Douglas, you and I are wiser in that respect!

“Douglas, you and I are the wiser in that respect !”

          Isn’t this a subjective feeling?

The house is on fire, you joke around.

Read the story below which I feel is similar to your (2) stupid performance regarding AKD. That can perhaps amuse you.

My colleague (47) has a Down syndrome male child (12 years old) who loves many things that boys her age hate and makes the home environment even more beautiful.

Likewise, we can always enjoy reading your completely irrelevant comments, bragging about as person (AKD) whose practical political performance in a country with a large majority of politically illiterate on universal suffrage.

Our good reviewer HT recently questioned AKD apologists on any bravery AKD has done in the last 30 years of his active political career – but you didn’t dare to give constructive reply. please tell us why !

May you be blessed with brains !

Since the number of candidates seems to increase each time
(well 2015 seems to be the outlier) can we expect about 45 candidates this time? It’s only the first , second, and possibly the third who matter, but this is of practical significance. The more candidates, the greater the confusion for the voters, the longer the ballot paper, and the greater the cost.
        .
Well, never mind the cost, we want the election held this year, and before the 16th of October 2024.

However, having listened to this at 22:14 in Bandarawela, Sri Lanka, on 12/07/2024, I can hardly believe that Blomstedt is 97 years old!
            .
I have actually looked at his Wikipedia entry to make sure that he’s still living! It is only yesterday that President Joseph Biden of the USA made an ass of himself in introducing President Zelensky of Ukraine.
            .
I have known and loved this symphony for 60 years (I’m now 75), and for all that period I’ve marvelled at the fact that Ludwig van Beethoven never heard this music, when he conducted its premier in Vienna on 7 May 1824 (I’ve made a second visit to Wikipedia). However, finally, I don’t place even the achievement of Herbert Blomstedt ahead of that of Beethoven.
            .
            Thanks, dear Ludwig!

Does anyone know what exactly is contained in the Agreements signed by the Bond Holders and other Lenders?

I asked this question from the critiques as well as the singers of praise. The Parliament was summoned on July 2nd at the request of the PM for a debate on the “Agreements” and to seek approval. There was no “Debate” but only another harangue by the President with enough of “Jokes” and entertainment wasting money. However, it was disclosed by Dr. Harsha de Silva that the “Agreements” were not even submitted to the Finance Committee of the House and neither to the Cabinet. The President’s explanation for this lapse was: ” The parties to the Agreements wanted not to disclose any of the terms to the Public”.

So in the absence of such disclosure, are we not groping in the dark? Are we to rely only on public speeches by the President and his henchmen? Everyone has forgotten to demand the actual DOCUMENTS to ascertain the facts, but continue to calculate the losses and gains. What a country we live in!

          Douglas,

If you want to know the dark side of the IMF, ask Iceland or Greece. Greece in particular is similar in terms of corruption to Sri Lanka. I invested in distressed Greek banks around 2010, following the likes of big investors such as Wilbur Ross. The investments didn’t turn out well.

What brilliant idea??? The serious question is whether You followed the MAD Cabaal who invested Sovereign Lanka’s Money in Greek Bonds, which everybody “Under the Sun” Knew ‘Jolly well’ Bad Investment and lost is a MOOT POINT at this stage!!!?? IRRELEVANT!!! The only outcome we know is that, who belongs to that castigated block of Foolish to place good wealth after Bad!!??? At least be happy you are in the same league as the former Governor of CBSL!!?? At least, you have that consolation and not ALONE, left to “DRY-OUT”!!!??

Mahila, people should check out the pictures in yesterday DM . Deceased underworld criminal Club Wasantha partying with 60 % parliamentarians ( who is who ). The one I liked most is with Mara. Apparently during the shoot out, Wasantha’s wife too had a unregistered gun in her possession. As the judge said Lanka is now ” Chicago of the yore “.

Add this to the current circus. Lankan Low and Odor , intentionally released a video to media, showing a group of police officers questioning the alleged suspect, who confessed to the murder. Media Justice. In 2022, former IGP had strictly instructed to refrain from broadcasting statement given by suspects to media. But then, the current IGP him self is a human rights violator and a Mafia member. This shows , how politicians, police and Mafia commit and connive at the most appalling crimes / murders.

Even funeral Parlor received threats from a foreign country over Wasantha’s remains. Two mafia / under world members were brought today from Dubai under heavy security. Reportedly the guy who ordered the the killing watched in real time, from Dubai on his mobile phone.More names are now being reported , involved in the murder. Look like most of them haven taken shelter in Dubai and other Gulf countries.

    Dear AA
    .
Why did Sri Lanka borrow so much?
So that the Mara government could start projects in order to take huge commissions from the contractors and at the same time deceive the gullible Sri Lankan people into thinking that Sri Lanka was developing fast under Mara leadership.
    .
Was there proper accounting of how it was spent?
Of course not, this is how the Mara clan was able to swindle the country.
    .
How many of the projects funded by borrowed money actually met the real needs of the country? Very few, if not the projects would have financed the loan repayments instead of accumulating as debt.
    .
    Who really benefited?
I think it is fairly obvious who benefitted. It was Mara clan and their cronies.

HT: National Audit reports point to the blatant accounting “Crimes” committed by the Financial Authorities. One such report pointed out that out of Rs. 12 billion spent on Projects, only Rs. 3 billion worth of assets were found. What happened to the balance of Rs. 9 billion?

Then again the AG reported that “Closing balances” as of 31st December have not been properly brought forward as “Opening Balances” on 1st of January and that “Short Fall” amounts to Rs. 17 billion. Isn’t this called “Cooking Accounts”?

When will we see the “Actual” Financial situation of the country? As of now all “Statistics” are lies and those are “Deliberate Lies” and “Crimes”.

It’s disgraceful that 69 lakh votes went to them, considering the atrocities they inflicted upon the people of Sri Lanka.

“Fraud has been the bread and butter of the Rajapaksa clan.”

However, this has been misinterpreted by abusive journalists as God’s gift to Sri Lanka. my foot !

Tell you HT, few days ago, I compared MaRa with GoRa. It immediately became clear to me that Gota was not fake, but politically immature. However, MaRa is as fake as his color “hair”: take a closer look at the brothers and their hair.

However, many people are also fraud and become victims of fraud and high crime constantly.
. There is a huge gap between people’s ability to differentiate between good and bad. Things do not look good for those who grow up with fraud and lack of proper law and order. Be it school, university, wherever people roam everyday, people behave more pro-cheating than anti-cheating. Monks become lovers, convenient hirelings for crooked politicians, even as their freebies continue to be grabbed by their blind SB followers.
People are not used to asking “why” before doing anything. Whether in the family or in the society, they behave as “pingonas”. Any public statement by the WEDABARI TARZONS is polarizing and easily makes them “heroes” to the Sinhalese. Tamils and Muslims who grew up in Sri Lanka do more or less the same.

      HT,
“How many of the projects funded by borrowed money actually met the real needs of the country? “
In my opinion, not one. The much-touted highways are said to have made it easier for tourists to travel, but even in 1982, tourism was booming without even one highway. The tourist traffic in 1982 showed that there was a remarkable growth in the number of tourists, with 407,230 arrivals. 1983 put paid to all that. The highways also made it easier for provincial residents to flock to Colombo, creating congestion and traffic jams in the city.
The ADB refused to grant money because it found the projects uneconomical, but the Rajapaksas borrowed from commercial lenders anyway. How else could they win elections?

      • 12
        16

        Dear OC
        .
Thank you for your comment. As we all know, before embarking on any project, it’s crucial to conduct a thorough feasibility study covering aspects like viability, return on investment (ROI), and environmental impact assessments, so ADB must have been absolutely spot on not giving us the loans.
        .
Let’s set aside discussions about highways for now and focus on the Matthala Airport and Hambantota Harbor projects as examples. Hambantota, despite failing to demonstrate its viability, was eventually leased to China for 200 years, while the airport remains largely unused.
        .
This decision represents a serious injustice inflicted upon Sri Lanka by the president and his associates, who were fully aware of the likely outcomes. Such maneuvers, often orchestrated by powerful nations, come with significant stakes, likely involving substantial financial incentives to ensure their realization.
        .
One can envision Hambantota becoming a pivotal outpost in the Indian Ocean should a conflict arise between China and another nation. It could potentially serve as a strategic base for nuclear submarine operations, with the airport functioning as a logistical and personnel transfer hub. Unfortunately, this scenario also implies the risk of Hambantota being targeted by intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) aimed at neutralizing its strategic significance.
        .
I’m not intending to echo the views of a conspiracy theorist, this is unfortunately the stark reality of nuclear warfare.

Right, Trinco Harbor is the big prize. India would like to have it (to spy on China), China would like to have it (to spy on India and deter the US as part of the “String of Pearls Strategy”) and the US would like to have it, as this would deter Chinese expansion. SL has to decide between the US and China, at some point. Letting India have any part of it will strain relations with China. I am not fully on China’s side, but I respect the growing influence of China in the region. The US is investing a lot of time and energy to contain Chinese expansion, but it is not succeeding. China will have its day and that will come with the invasion of Taiwan (important for semiconductors).

King George VI had 2 daughters Elizabeth and Margaret. Elizabeth being the oldest was first in line and then Margaret. As she had Charles before her father George died in 1952, Charles was next in line. So Charles is Ruchira’s father (or Margaret). Charles (born 1948) is a bit older than me so as my first daughter was born in 1974 Ruchira might have been born from about 1968 give or take a couple of years (making him mid fifties). Something doesn’t make sense.

So, are you implying that we should support China if there is a war between China & India? In my experience, I would trust the Chinese the least in business & from what I seen of the Chinese influence in SL, I would take my chances with the Indians if I have to make a choice. There is a Chinese hand in all troubled hotspots in the world, exploiting the natural resources of these poor countries, so I am sceptic of Chinese bearing gifts. Anyway, SL would have been a Chinese colony by now if the Rajapakses ruled the country, & maybe, you would all be driving around in Chinese electric vehicles, powered by Chinese built coal fired power plants on Chinese built highways ..

If you look at countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc, the highest earners are Chinese. Singapore was created out of Malaya; again, another Chinese success story. I don’t want to make a whole thread about Chinese success. But China is much more successful than India. Take it from an Indian prof at a top US university: https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/why-india-unlike-china-wont-be-an-economic-superpower/.
If we were to re-visit this thread in, say, 20 years, China would still be leagues ahead of India. India is simply too corrupt as well as mired in religious superstition.

I think one of our major problems is our inability to admit our own limitations, whether in Management, agriculture, railway maintenance, or whatever. We are still crippled by our 2500 year history.

Dear HT and all other rational thinkers,
Whoever whatever lies being spread for their political gains, truths would not be suppressed forever. 2015-2019 govt took loans to cover RAJAPAKSHE huge loanS AND TO pay off the salary hikes in that 100 day program (Rajapakshe dogs had never increased the salaries for public sector). So not RANIL but people benefited from that. Our people are no grateful.
Reports say, RANIL does not take his own salary for such a long time. However, it is not reported by the press in srilanka. Harin Fernando revealed that in a press conference lately.

Stupid people filled SL (95%) is divided between MaRa clan and Anti Mara.MaRa’s politics was similar to sex business owner and his service personnel. Entire country is infected by it today, and it is so stinky. So full face lift would be the only solution to come out of the disaster.
      .
In a civilized country MARA would have been stoned to death. Unfortunately, what is being practised in our hell is the the opposit yet in our hell filled with more slaves.

Yet today, MaRa is held like a god in the southern corners no matter even if their lovely ones would have been raped and murdered on broad day light. The kind of brainwashing is akin to that of Mugabe toward his tribal folks.

SRILANKA ‘s main stream media is complicit for this brainwashing. Unfortunately hells like srilanka have no laws against the kind of MEDIA whore houses.

    Dr Ali

OK, so there is no such thing as a free lunch & the IMF is waiting for its pound of flesh but isn’t the NPP, although vocal at first, is now toeing the same line? Is there an alternative to IMF?

I have been asking how the NPP intend to recover the economy & their sources of funding. Will the NPP able to invest in the export industry, health, education, social services, etc without taxing the average citizen (that applies to stealth taxes as well)?

SL is in this situation because of blatant corruption, gross mismanagement & utter incompetence on one family (& their cronies) which controlled 70% of SL economy . Generous kickbacks were the reason for white elephant projects which provided no return. Borrowing at commercial rates were not only lucrative but no questions were asked & any amount was on the tap. We all knew this, yet, the same family was voted in by (9m) stupid voters. The new generation wants the old 225 out but doesn’t that include a handful of JVP parliamentarians as well? The NPP consists of the JVP old guard too, so what is the ‘new’ change you talk about?

“Why did Sri Lanka borrow so much, was there proper accounting of how it was spent, how many of the projects funded by borrowed money actually met the real needs of the country, and who really benefited, are all questions that still remain unanswered.”

I showed elsewhere that the Maitree/Ranil government was borrowing almost the same amount as Rajapakse on an annualized basis. Anyway, you have to borrow money to grow the economy. That’s how capitalism works. Allying with China is far better than allying with India. India is corrupt to the core. Let’s see if the US can increase its corporate productivity by a factor of 10x via AI to contain its national deficit. If not, the USD may fall by the side of the road and the yuan could emerge as the winner, making Mahinda look like a genius.

That’s an interesting statement, care to elaborate? If that was the case, how come SL became bankrupt under their watch?
I suppose when academics like Dr Ali make assumptions blindly, you can be excused for your blind faith of the Rajapakses. MR may have won the war but that doesn’t give him the right to plunder the country. Stealing is not only immoral but criminal as well & when it was against the best interest of the country, it can be called treason & ‘repaying’ with a ‘higher’ GDP, doesn’t absolve the crime.

            Raj-UK,

Here is an interesting analogy for you. Sri Lanka defaulted on a total debt of around $51B USD in 2022. Apple Corps debt for the same year was $120B USD. Sri Lankan debt is relatively insignificant by international standards. The debt itself is just icing on the cake. The main issues are structural – corruption (lack of checks and balances + nepotism), brain drain, decaying institutions, terrorism, high borrowing costs (war) that drained forex reserves. 100% of these issues are related to the civil war. Mahinda’s clan did not begin that war, they ended it (expeditiously).
Regarding bankruptcy, Sri Lanka ran out of foreign exchange reserves and defaulted on short-term debt obligations. One could argue, this would not have occurred had it not been for COVID-19. Refinancing options were either limited or non-existent for obvious reasons. It doesn’t matter if the Pope had been President of Sri Lanka at the time, the country would have gone bankrupt regardless. The only reason GR became President is because of the Easter Attacks, which put a severe strain on tourism.
For the record, my argument does not imply that Rajapakses are model politicians. I am simply absolving them of larger responsibility for bankruptcy.

              Raj,
As predicted, a load of irrelevant rubbish from the master of irrelevance.
In 2022, the ratio of national debt to gross domestic product (GDP) in Sri Lanka increased by 12.8 percentage points (+12.46 percent) since 2021. Therefore, the ratio in Sri Lanka reached a peak in 2022 with 115.54 percent.
Sri Lanka earned less money than it owed
Apple’s total net sales amounted to 383.29 billion U.S. dollars in their 2023 financial year, a decrease from the historical record of 394.33 billion U.S. dollars in financial year 2022.
Apple earned EIGHT times what it owed.

“Irrelevance of Comparison: Comparing a country’s debt-to-GDP ratio with a company’s net sales is fundamentally flawed. National debt and GDP are economic indicators for a country, while net sales represent a company’s revenue. They operate in entirely different contexts and scales, making such a comparison meaningless.”

                  Ruchira,

“But don’t you ever get tired of this sorry lot!?”

They will get tired of themselves eventually and self-destruct, “Mission Impossible” style. What you said before; a bunch of them are probably ex-LTTE conducting spy ops. I would not be surprised if “Leela” and “Rohan” (these are just code names) took part in battles (or planning) such as Elephant Pass. The level of brainwashing exceeds what is possible for normal individuals. Leela speaks good Sinhala; he/she must have been in the intelligence wing of the LTTE. After the war, escaped to Germany.
The most dangerous one is the “Scot.” It could be Pottu Amman himself. SLA never recovered that bugger’s body. The “Kandy” story is just a cover. Never believe what people write on the anonymous web, without doing due diligence. There are men hiding as women, adults posing as children, JASI’s posing as Europeans, etc. A digital shootfest. I advise you to be careful on this website as well as others.

Anyone who speaks the truth about Mara is illogical according to you.
Let me ask you a simple question, if Mara saved us from destruction then why did he steal? Why did he put his entire family and friend into high government positions? Why did he encourage corruption?
To me that looks like a very selfish self serving acts that negate his war efforts, besides it was Sarath Fonseka who led the war not Mara..

“All politicians and corporations lie and steal,”
But all countries are not bankrupt.
              Some facts:
Tamilnadu is more corrupt than Sri Lanka
Tamilnadu also was locked down due to Covid
              Tamilnadu is not bankrupt
              Sri Lanka is bankrupt.
Sri Lanka has a 2500 year old irrigation system.
Tamilnadu doesn’t, and has much less rain.
But Tamilnadu sent food relief to Sri Lanka.
              What’s the difference?
Rajapaksa, Rajapaksa, Rajapaksa, Rajapaksa, and Cabral vs MK Stalin
              .

“if Mara saved us from destruction then why did he steal?”

You live in a bubble. All politicians and corporations lie and steal, to a certain extent. More than 50% of US politicians are millionaires. They have at least 200 days off work. Health insurance for life. Lifetime pension. Approximately 25% to 30% of UK politicians are estimated to be millionaires. It’s actually far worse in corporations. Big banks, politicians, and insiders work together to manipulate stock prices. I don’t want to spend too much time explaining to a bankrupt coconut farmer, but a company like Apple spends $100M on just share buybacks. This lets them pump the share price artificially (MC/OS). They then cash in the stock options for millions at a time.

            “Why did he encourage corruption?”

Where is your proof? Did he tell you personally?

” it was Sarath Fonseka who led the war not Mara.”

Fonseka is a good general, nevertheless he had to get permission from MaRa on certain matters and coordinate with GR.

Did MR save us from destruction? I believe he was instrumental in causing it. If you are convinced MR & family did not benefit financially while in office, then, they are a bunch of extremely stupid yobs who had no clue in governing a country & should never have been voted into Parliament by people like you. If the Inland Revenue Services is given the power to investigate, & under a dedicated team, there will be enough proof to lock them up for unaccounted wealth.

America may have its millionaire politicians & some may be opportunists like Trump but there were also decent people like Obama & McCain, who, unfortunately, didn’t have a second chance for Presidency.

A CEO is responsible for providing a good return for the shareholders but insider trading is illegal & the Securities Commision keeps an eagle eye on ‘pumping & dumping’. In comparison, millionaire SL businessmen do just that & able to launder money by investing in the stock market with no questions asked, enabling them even to make hostile takeovers of blue chip companies.

As for UK politicians, many Tories are from privileged backgrounds & had successful careers before entering politics. Even Labour & Lib. Dem Politicians who have come from humble backgrounds are well educated with clean track records. They all took up politics for the prestige & honour, not for the money, unlike the majority of SL politicians. UK MP’s don’t have special privileges, nor vehicles or bodyguards, & all pay tax & contribute to the pension scheme, just like normal citizens.

The head of state is responsible for the strategy & leadership of any armed conflict, therefore, the buck stops with the President but SF was responsible for maintaining discipline within the Armed forces & he hasn’t done a good job.

                  Hello Raj-UK,

This is my point. There is corruption everywhere (ask Nancy Pelosi or Raj Rajaratnam) but the impact is much greater in a developing country like SL because it doesn’t have much of a middle class. Locking up Rajapakse will not solve the fundamental problem, which (in my opinion) is the brain drain. The percentage of millionaires is much greater in the USA compared to Europe as a whole. There is this enterprise called “Silicon Valley” which is able to generate massive boosts in productivity for the US economy as a whole. Silicon Valley is facilitated by the best minds (high IQ) from all over the world. Sri Lanka needs smart people who can generate revenue. Locking up Rajapakse is not a move in that direction.

“Did MR save us from destruction?”

Yes. You cannot fight a war indefinitely. Had CBK remained as “President” for another 5-10 years, something would have broke in the system. At that point, you would have had anarchy (much worse than bankruptcy) in the South, and some kind of foreign intervention, followed by division along ethnic lines. Look at Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Korea, and Yugoslavia. That is the direction Sri Lanka was headed in. A Tamil ethnostate in the North, ruled by thugs, separated from the South by some kind of DMZ structure and monitored by UN Peacekeepers. Remember, CBK was already crying to the Indians for help when the LTTE was on the verge of capturing Jaffna in 1995.

“ RW as the best man for the job are strategies dominating the political arena.”
Those who are living comfortably at present do not want any change to the way they live and operate. They are afraid of change that will be brought in by JVP-NPP. Those who are affected by the Economic (&all other) CrIses wants an END to current and past RULERS.
The suffering lot can only place their HOPES on AKD ( NPP). Our 2015 hopes were dashed by RW + MS.

Can you honestly name five positive contributions AKD and the JVP have made to Sri Lanka’s progress? Despite holding significant government positions for years, I haven’t witnessed any exceptional achievements from them.

I agree that the Rajapakses & their cronies made a dog’s dinner of the economy but I can count 2 recent contributions by the UNP & Ranil. The first is the free ambulance service which the UNP, as a party, instigated, for which there was much opposition, particularly, from the GMOA . Did the JVP, the champion of the downtrodden, support the govt. on this valuable service? The second is the current state of the economy, which may not be all that good, but certainly an improvement from the shortages & queues for essential items. In the absence of anyone else coming forward with a better plan, I think RW deserves some credit. What do you think the plan of AKD & NPP/JVP if Ranil did not step in for better or worse? Can AKD/JVP claim any positive contribution so far in politics?

        Human Touch

        Agree with you.

Dr Ali has been playing the same song with different words. In my understanding, it is just wishful thinking of better times ahead under NPP based on assumptions because there is no critical analysis of NPP objectives & strategy. We want the politicians who have been sucking the blood of the country held accountable but what is the much hyped ‘system change’? Aragalaya demanded all current politicians out but that would include the handful of JVP MPs who are in the NPP as well. Labour in UK campaigned on ‘change’, from conservative policies to labour policies, so, is the NPP ‘system’ change from liberal to Marxism?

Listening to the NPP womens’ front leader some time back put me off the NPP completely because it had no substance & if that is the case with the rest of the 20 or so coalition groups of the NPP, may god save SL if the NPP comes to power.
