Desperate Times Need Desperate Measures, So Comes Kegalle Peniya

By M.M. Janapriya

Dr. M.M. Janapriya

On face value this Kegalle Peni Kolama appears benignly similar to the historical ‘Wadakaha Sudiya’. There was a total solar eclipse in the 1950s. This must have been the one of 1955 and I was just about 7 years old then but I do remember not least the eclipse we watched in a basin of water but also the famous stories of women drinking a decoction made of ‘Wadakaha’to become pretty. It was around this eclipse that the newspapers decided cheekily to lead young women folk up the garden path. Some of the Sinhala morning broadsheets decided to play this mischievous game. They reiterated anyone who drank ‘Wadakaha Sudiya’ during a period inside the ‘Sooriyagrahanaya’ became fair complexioned and pretty and the rest is history. Listen to this baila by one and only C.D. Fonseka which sums it up all. This potion remedy caught up in epidemic proportions and as expected by people with common sense didn’t result in the mass production of beauty queens but a large number of the gullible participants who drank the decoction ended up in hospital. If I remember right a few paid the ultimate price too. Remember `Wadakaha’ is poisonous.

Discovery

Someone who is neither an Ayrvedic practitioner nor a proper traditional medical practitioner with registration to practice, wakes up one morning having been spoken to by Kali Amma about a “Wattoruwa’ for a Covid-19 cure. He then goes on to make this potion with Nutmeg, bees’ honey and two other secret ingredients and claims this to be a magic cure for Covid 19. I am at a loss to know how this Goda Weda Mahattaya established close enough contact with one of the Physicians of District Hospital, Wathupitiwala to trial his new found medicine so swiftly and also how he received and is still receiving an unimaginable degree of electronic media patronage.

Aftermath of discovery

Details of how the medicine was tested has not been made public but a printed list of patients and their PCR tests that had apparently  become negative at the end of 10 days was shown repeatedly on a certain TV channel that would sing songs of praise of the Administration no matter what. It is my considered view that no praiseworthy test on the efficacy of this deluded chap’s peniya could ever have been done by anyone the way it had been done, in the whole world let alone by a puisne Consultant Physician, BH Wathupitiwala and for sure the whole story is either a fabrication or indeed a miserably flawed test protocol and hence also the testing process. Professional association with unqualified people comes under infamous conduct in the Sri Lanka Medical Ordinance which is punishable by erasure of registration and I hope the SLMC takes a good look at the saga and the involvement of the Wathupitiwala medical personnel in the matter.

Media Patronage

TV channels both the state run and private were relentless in their effort to maintain the ‘peni news’ as the most important news of the day. This is exactly how the skin colour challenged young women were brain washed over 65 years ago to drink Wadakaha Sudiya about the composition of which, they didn’t have a clue but yet were unhesitant to drink it. The mass hysteria of the sector of the public possessed by the Kegalle Peniya, in similar fashion, thronged the premises of the discoverer paying scant regard to social distancing. Sri Lankan TV channels went overboard with the efficacy of this decoction. We watched with dismay and despair how some channels were at work morning noon and night in pursuit of this goal. The question is was this done at the instant of this TV channel itself or were they ‘Baron’s orderlies’?

Political Patronage

Potion was taken in public by the Health Minister in the presence of some health officials and this was splashed widely over all TV channels. Then the peniya found its way big time in to the parliament premises together with its discoverer Mr. Dadi Bidi the first stop being the speaker’s chambers. How some MPP drank this syrup was shown on all local TV channels too. Quite a few MPP came on TV and spoke in support of the peniya. One fellow popularly known in social media as Sookarawansha went to the extent of being derogatory on and ridiculing the western system which advocated stringent testing before the peniya could be rolled out to the greater public.

It is interesting how this syrup attracted the attention of the powers that be who appointed a high level team comprised of university professors to determine its efficacy in curing Covid. The 6 professor investigative team is at work on the matter right now and it would take a few weeks for the report to come out if it is ever going to. The prime Minister has asked the test to be expedited as if it is like laying down a rail track or something similar. I would invite him to read the next paragraph.

Science behind Testing

I cannot see how the expert panel can establish whether or not this decoction is working without doing a randomised control trial. Randomised means the patients are picked up in random fashion for the two arms namely the test arm and the control arm. Though selected randomly the two arms should be comparable in age, sex, ethnic ratio, nutritional status, co-morbid status to name a few factors that could confound the result if not given due consideration. There is a thing called the power factor in statistics which calculates the number of cases needed to be tested to get a statistically significant result. Shall we say arbitrarily this number is 250 patients in each arm which means 500 patients have to be found conforming to the above criteria? They also need to be at the same stage of the infection like say the first day of the illness and all of them should be symptomatic. Both these groups have to give informed consent to be tested as none of the patients would receive anything more than the peniya or the placebo. Question then arises as to how many patients would prefer not to be treated by conventional means but to be treated as above. This will prove to be a difficult obstruction to get through. From the foregoing you would agree that testing the peniya scientifically is a nonstarter. Giving the benefit of our doubts to the investigators we shall wait patiently for the results to be released.

Dhamma Makes Peniya ‘Saangika’

This poor soul leading a crowd of twenty or thirty compatriots visited the Dalada Maligawa, and the Mahanayakes of the Malwatta and Asgiriya chapters recently. He carried his potion in gleaming silverware to the Maligawa i.e. lord Buddha’s relics. The high priest got a glass decanter full of the peniya each. The monks in turn invoked blessings on this ‘wishwakarma’ to become the first ever in the whole world to have discovered a cure for Covid. All these escapades were given a very high level of prominence by the usual TV channel and most other channels.

Woodpecker Hits Banana Tree Trunk (Pennika meets his Waterloo)

Encouraged and emboldened by how he was treated at the two temples at the pinnacle of Sangahood in Sri Lanka he made a Bee-line to the Jaya Shree Maha Bodhiya in Anuradhapura in the same fashion as before. With all the pomp and pageantry bestowed upon him by these TV channels of dubious integrity the guy reached the destination. Unfortunately for this one in a 7.4 billion man the Mahanayake of the Atamasthana was a person with intelligence and a backbone. He realized that this poor man needed help and without ordering him out, he let him offer the peniya to the lower tier of the sacred temple (Pahatha Maluwa). This subtle act brought the beast out of the God (or Angel Kali amma) and the sick guy tried to take the monk to task. Police had to intervene to tackle the restive crowd. This man is suffering from delusions of grandeur which is one of the cardinal features of Schizophrenia. Here is the link.

Discussion

I consider this whole saga a matter of very serious concern for which patronage of the administration seems to have been received in no small measure. It is important to delineate how this was done and why. If I wake up from my sleep in the middle of the night having seen the God Pattini who gave me a wattoruwa for a Covid cure will I get the same media support and government patronage? Definitely not. So this guy was made by someone and why?

We have lost the battle against Corona big time. Judging by percentages of test positives from various parts of the country we must be having at least 2-3 million positive cases in the country. So if you are in a crowd of 7 one of them might have Covid. This is not a good position to be in. Also the Administration knows people are blaming them for acting carelessly for the second wave to come in. When the propensity of the virus coming from India is an astronomical high, trying to apportion blame to an unknown Airline pilot is definitely pulling wool over peoples’ eyes.

Administration realizes the importance of letting businesses and services go on for resurrection of the economy and hence they want the people to get used to the so called ‘new normal’. This is a situation of ‘live and let live’ meaning despite the virus being there, life will go on. The task force still seems to be testing tracing and isolating but the commitment and vigour shown first time around seems conspicuous by its absence. It seems not only the receivers of the stringent restrictions but even the imposers seem to have got tired of it.

Life will go on. Disease will go on as well and deaths will go on too. In a situation like this we can only endeavor to bring the R0 i.e. the number each sufferer can infect down to 1 or below 1 so that the virus would die away with time. This is where strict adherence to health guidelines becomes of paramount importance. While the country moves on in the ‘new normal’ mode it is important to give people hope. Feeling of being hopeless not infrequently leads to suicide. In advanced countries there is physical and emotional support including counselling etc and also there is a vaccine being rolled out. However in a financially and morally challenged countries like ours the easier thing to do is to distract peoples’ attention to something like this Kegalle Peniya given under God’s hand. (cf. recently diseased Argentinian football legend Maradona) In my opinion this is a mass distraction campaign organized by or with the blessings of the master strategists of the campaigners of the administration. How did they do it?

DB was picked up from amidst a whole heap of jokers as he looked serious and performed in a serious manner before the media. Even before this saga, one of the so called professors tried to promote another peniya. This man also believes in gods and other supernatural powers causing and curing disease. I watched on TV how a joker in politics went and doled out an automated crushing machine to DB to facilitate mass production. Remember this is public money, belonging to you and me. It seems DB had very swift contact with the VP Wathupitiwela base hospital who is purported to have carried out some tests and within hours of getting the flawed test report, the TV channel that followed DB like a hawk splashed this as headline news. There are two things glaringly wrong here. The doctor who did the test never made his material and methods public which is very suspicious. The medical fraternity should force him to do so. Secondly, there are two Physicians at BH Kegalle. Why weren’t their help solicited for the tests which would have made the process logistically less of a hassle. I am fairly certain the VPP Kegalle asked the joker to get lost whereas the bloke at Wathupitiwela must be a stooge of the Administration.

I think it is on the strength of the purported tests at DH Wathupitiwela that DB peniya earned it’s eligibility for further tests by an expert panel consisting of 5 or 6 professors connected to the field of Medicine. They have undertaken to test the decoction scientifically. I have already outlined the hurdles they will encounter for sure, on the way and I am eagerly waiting to see how the former are going to surmount them. Also I am intrigued as much as probably you guys out there are, as to why these learned or not so learned professors undertook to test the potion without rejecting it outright if the Wathupitiwela VP refused to put his materials and methods on the table. Had he done that the ‘mahadenamutta and his 5 wise men would have been able to study the flawed methodology that would definitely have made the wise men refuse to oblige with a proper scientific test on the decoction. Why didn’t it happen? Question of knowledge or a question of backbone or a bit of both?

Was just now chatting with a Lankan Tamil now domiciled thanks to the war in Germany with his then wife and daughter and he confirmed to me that good innocent folk are dropping dead on two fronts namely the coronavirus and starvation .

    Who’s responsible for this.?
It is nobody but the motor racing pariah racist Yakkos mainly the rajapukas.

The people who love to save this beggars colony from further calamity of going down the pallan should arm together and save themselves from these corrupt money making murderers the corrupt rajapukas and their fellow hora boru machan’s who are totally clueless on how to run successfully run and develop the next Singapore.

The Peni Baas saga is just another illustration of the popular mentality. People are said to be 98% literate, but this is not evidenced in thinking patterns. There is blind faith in alleged Ayurvedic cures for practically anything from cancer to heart disease. It is claimed to be “ancient knowledge” without side effects. But where was all this “ancient knowledge” when more than 35000 died of Malaria in 1936? It was DDT and Western medicine that eradicated Malaria. Were there Ayurvedic cures for TB, cholera, polio, smallpox, etc? I don’t claim that Ayurveda is totally useless, in certain situations it is better, BUT it can’t deal with infectious diseases because viruses and bacteria are unknowns in the Ayurvedic system.
What respect Ayurveda is rightly entitled to is destroyed by the antics of superstitious manipulated idiots like Peni Baas.

        Dear Old Codger,
I wish you a merry christmas and happy holidays.

Brother even if literarcy rates are high, if people would not care much about general knowledge, they cant differentiate good from the bad.

Look at the masses that lined up to Kegalle – were not all very poor people. In today s context, if POLICE, MONKS or Ministers would drink any kind of DECOCTIONS, perhaps made out of excreta of COW/Rajakshes/ or anything, they just go after it without questioning twince. This is the contitioned mind set of the average being controlled by TWO MEDIA CHANNELS … in that country. Derana TV and Hiru TV as pvt media channels have a greater impact on whatever they add to air. People are misled on broad day light by TV anchors such as Chathura Alwis and his counterparts in Hiru… these men should be banned in SRILANKA by people… people should come to protest against these uncultured bastards that have become condom supports to their owners as of today.

Who ever whatever being said and done during the good governance period the country was not guide ed by myths. There were no place given to astrologers and witchery but some sort of truths ruled though no economic wonders were made but people were given fuel concessions and other benefits. Even tourism industry and other areas were booming but media mafia control by criminals and Rajapakshes never allowed truths be passed to the nation. No means it was possi6 to make economic wonders beca6 Rajapakshe gad looted it to the core. That was well articulated by their condom boy Wimal Buruwanse long before MR was defeated in 2015. And now I see central bank bond scam was also made by Rajapakse criminals to marginalize UNP and JVP. THEIR POWER GREEDY POLITICS destroyed this country pushing the people from frying pan to fire. If MARA was ever people s friendly he could handle srilanken politics in a better way. He is the deadly cancer of this nation which could easily become a Singapore. 😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐😐

I remember the days of Wadaka Sudhiya. I was at school then. But, people followed rules. We were told not to look at the sun directly but its reflection in water with ground murunga leaves. the instructions were followed. Covid is different. It has lasted very very much longer than an eclipse. People are in fear. and the people are by culture gullible, used to astrologers and kattadiayas. The state has obviously failed them. They have simply lied saying that there are only two clusters. In that context, there is a tendency to believe in these fictions. It is like the anti-vaxxers in the West. Here, we have the speaker! and the minister of health and other ministers drinking the man’s potion. What can you expect when these morons promote such beliefs. A Mahanayake also approved. So, the people are not to be blamed. After all, they are the people who keep on electing different sets of rogues and morons to rule over them.

One can see two or three registered Ayurvedic doctors who claim they have the correct medicine for COVID-19. No minister listened to them. As MMJ says here, who found this man and for what purpose. A person known to me from abroad got C-9 and ordered medicine from one of our Ay. Doctors who come on YouTube. Before delivery of the medicine there, he got cured. If he got cured after taking this medicine, the story would have gone viral recommending the drug as a cure. Peni Master should be allowed to stay in IDH among the patients for about two weeks and prove the effectiveness of his product. (For him to get all this state patronage could he be a member of the Viyath(e)maga?)

Abduction, Bribe, Cheat, Robbery, Threat, Murder, Propaganda are the characteristics of the success of SLPP politics. Who is “Kali Amma” in this drama? To my knowledge “Kali Amma” is a Goddess in Hindu religion. Sri Lanka might now ready to export this Corona medicine to entire world and to become the richest nation in the world.

Mano Ganesan want these people stop using Kali Devi’s name for this game. Kali Devi is another murtham of Uma Devi. In Ceylon Tamil Uma Devi is known in Tamil Nadu as Parwathi Devi. Whatever the usage, Parwathi is most fonder-ed within all Gods and Goddesses. All Hindus treat her as their natural mother, irrelevant of their own mothers are living or no. When these guys are using Kili Devi in their black art, many Sinhalese are now cursing Kali Amma too with these guys. Mano doesn’t want that happen to the Hindus’ most beloved Mother.

Developed countries test it first with laboratory animals (mice and rats, chimpanzees). Then with human beings. And we all know Nutmeg could do lot more health problems if that would exceeds the levels. However, Kali Maniyo controlled srilanken commoners are misled by Rajapakshes for their political survival.
    :
A country that was in good shape is fallen to the level of another country being controlled by tribal acts.
    .
As of today, banana republic SRILANKA led by Gotabaya/former asylum seeker in US test ” honey drinks” with country’s parliamentary SPEAKER, Minister of HEALTH (Muttihamy), Minister of Health (Fake Professor Jayasumana) and Rajaakshes baggaege boy (Sisira Jayakodi).

We should be proud of some GOOD Sangaya wahanses to have revealed it. We salute to ATAMASTHANA HAMUDURUWO….. he has set a lession to Maedagoda bp Ahbayathissa, Muruththeruwa jackel and Alle gunaewanse the kind of cheewardhariyas.

Under authoritarian Leadership of Rajapakshes, politicians become guinea pigs. What a wonderful world, MEDAMULANA criminals have made it ?

      Dear Writer,
      Thanks for your analysis.
      .
you should be well aware of the facts in terms of the conditions for clinical trials. Why do some MBBS make every effort to give a publicity for a KALIAMMA controlled mad person to mislead the nation ?

Those few dozens of patients that were said to have shown negative for COVID infections are no kind of clinical significant as shown in compared to international standards. Those clinical trials be them carried out in SL or Europe, they should be performed within a period of time in compliance with ICH-GCP guidelines. We know WWII ERA there were reports came from Nuremberg trial, which was condemed by any civlized folks. Why srilankens, should fall to that levels just because of a CRIMINAL family grabed the power not being able to see the country is marching on good governance path.
Until EASTER SUNDAY disaster, nothing was comparably wrong in this country. But as of today, almost everything is twisted thanks to RAJAKSHES CRIMINALS and their supporters along with totally stupid majority of voters.

One simple explanation on this lunatic situation is , “Swollen head syndrome.”
Superstition is blind faith . Who promotes blind faith in the country ? What is
the job of Responsible Few to bring people out of Superstition ? Are we doing
that or adding more fuel to recruit more adherents to Blind Faith Brigade of all
hues ? Our country is being ruined by cheap politics that will do anything for
power ! They fool the voters by all means available to them . And they even call
them master minds ! Every word in the vocabulary is wrongly interpreted to
suit them ! This juice man must be in police custody right now if food standard
agency acted swiftly ! What is Sajith doing ? What is Anura doing ? Only empty
words and no real action ? I won’t hesitate to call them cowards and the same
    old wines !

      Dear Whywhy,
      .
It is not only “Swollen head syndrome ” but it is complex situation. Even medical graduates behave as if they are no different to “WIMAL BURUWANSE-TYPE-school drop out. Just look at that so called Prof. Jayasumana who is WIMAL BURUWANSE Type 2 for SLPP. MaRa appoint anyone who could mislead the nation. And Muslim traitor, Ali Sabry is the other. All these are just to hold on the ” Garbage dump- LED by MARA/GOTA/10%.

Now we are not in 40ties but in 2020, as of today, there are international laws that should be held in order any medical drugs/devices be introduced to human beings. In 40ties, we heard about Nurenburg trials. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuremberg_trialsUnfortunately, that man with a FAKE Prof Title, with SOME knowledge on internationally recognized ” Randomized CLINICAL TRIALS”

Mr Whywhy, in a country LAW AND ORDER is tamed by a bunch of thugs born to Medamulana, what good can we expect ?????

The SLPP has got two MBBS doctors in Parliament. Dr Sudarshini Fernandopulle and Dr Ramesh Pathirana.
        .
What are they doing about this?
        .
Professor of Virology, Tissa Vitharana, is very old, 86, and I have heard complaints that he’s been compromising on his Marxism, but he has been speaking sense. Another veteran LSSPer, Engineering Professor Kumar David, has said that reservations should be cast aside and Professor Vitharana (and not Shavindra Silva – what sort of General is he called – lieutenant or major? – the whole lot of them are distasteful to me) – well, Professor Vitharana should be put in charge.

          Dear Mr Sinhala Man,

          Let me correct you-
          .
Not just two but more than that I would say.
          :
Insane Jayasumana who is wearing a FAKE professor title is one another srilanken MBBS holder
          .
No matter what it is those MBBS holders would not care much about facts.
          :
Richard Pathirana s SON to stay as if he is FED WITH KIRIMATI while uneducated MINISTERs in SLPP are making every effort misleading the nation with KALI AMMA fantacies- is beyond ethics and morals. I dont think it is right to let the vulnerable be misguided the way they have been caught today. See the CROWDs gathered to Kegalle asking “PANIBEEMA” from a man whose nature is no different to that GALTHANNA DEWA GATHI BP. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHUkh6mhY-E

And just listen to what EXPERT PSYCHIATRIST Dr Ruban has to say about Kaliamma controlled Dhammika bandara
          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW2dTCp90lU

I dont hold Chamuditha as a good moderator. He is not educated enough to raise some questions, but some videos brought by him reveal or at least provide food for thoughts.

Yes, thanks, LM, there are other qualified MBBS+ doctors with the government, but they are doing little.
            .
Your contributions are a constantly show me how valuable a service you are providing by making many on CT aware of the sheer numbers who are able to use only Sinhala, and the range of media that influence their thinking.
            .
I find Chamuditha irritating; he tries to draw attention to himself as a fearless questioner. He ought to be more respectful towards his guest. I remember how he bullied Sumanthiran once.

Agree with you Mr SM. Chamudhitha does not know what is questioning about. Week by week, he changes his opinion. They journos dont seem to know journalistic ethics. I think he is playing a double game. See how can we trust any journalist working for Rajakashe biased DERANA TV. I knew the owner of DERANA TV during his schooling days. But these men have changed a lot in their person over the decades.
Investigative Journalism is not known to the srilankens. Not even SIRASA Journos are qualified enough to be investigative journalists.

                Dear Prof. KD,

Reasons behind why SRILANKA would NOT be able to work on the flattening the curve in terms of COVID19 is well connect with the current leadership. They dont care much about anything but their family rule. There are a large number of people suffer in Middle east today, but they are targeted for filling the pockets of Rajapakshe – mithuru- hawula… see these men are mlechcha by every means.

Srilanken current leadership MR and GR (no differene to the nature of FAKE NAME Dhammika Bandara, whowas then known as another corrupted witchery man) – We should blame people for paving the way unethical, uncultured, bastards being brought back to ruin this nation. Believe or not, like or not, this is the truth. At least over 50 lacks of voter eligible made it clear if RAJAAKSHES would be back, things regarding anything would not work well.
                :
I have no doubt, considering all what Dr R Senaratne achieved during the GOOD goverance would have CLOSED BIA blocking any covid infected passengers into the the country. He managed to cancell most dangerous TOBACCO men which Rajaskpshe were unable to do during MR JUNTA Regime from 2005 – 2015. Number that stopped smoking grew exponentially. . .

Instead, today UNETHICAL immatured WOMEN and men being appointed as ministers, state minister or the like, what they have been doing is like playing with FIRE on the cost of the GULLIBLE MASSES of the country. We dont need to hide, most living in SRILANKA are easy targets and easy prey for predatory murderous politicians like Rajapapkshes. Rajapkshes would rape and murder their lovely ones, if the woudl have been offered DISOUNTS. That is how they became untouchably wealthy as of today. Karma will punish them sooner than later, … the light athe end of the tunnel is seen to me atl least…. MR cant even stay few minutes on a stage today. He is just 75 but behaves as if he is older than Prof. Witharana and Mr Sambanthan.
                  ;
Yet today, we see, THAT WOMAN FROM COLOMBO BY NAME Ms/Mr SCP is behind them, in that false propaganda – the kind of women would do the oldest .. not caring much about the little. Thanks to the the kind of stupid men an women Rajapkshes became leaders, but the CONSEQUENCE is clear and before the PEOPLE today….. Not Christmas, but people cant afford their 3 meals as of today… just 1 year after the barbarians grabed the power

I have no doubt, GOTLER would be remembered as the worst ever P for srilanka, looking at the manner how his higly corrupted men being given the power to overcharge the passengers that return home from Middle east/Italy and other farther destinations at this critical juncture being caught by COVID.

Faith is strong belief in the doctrines of a religion or other subject, based on spiritual or personal conviction rather than proof. Superstition is excessive credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural. So combining the two is debatable because “FAITH” is not arguable by anyone over another and one may reject it or accept it. Otherwise it will only end in a NO decision if argued, as you say, that “Faith is blind” and one will not see the other side, both being beliefs.

Superstition is blind faith means it is beyond reason , not based
on reason . Different dictionaries can provide their own version of
definitions towards the same direction. God exists and there’s no
such thing as God have endless debates . What I have pointed out
is how I look at issues I am concerned of and not about my belief
or disbelief in religions . I am concerned as an individual about
some groups of people from different backgrounds are viciously
engaged in exploiting the people who are devoted to religion more
than anything else but without proper knowledge about what they
believe , in the name of believing !

You first said : Superstition is blind faith.
Now you say : Superstition is blind faith means it is beyond reason , not based
          on reason.
As you say yourself it is beyond reason – not based on reason. So how does one argue or debate it without a yardstick. Both God and superstition are beliefs or faith systems. To each his own.
I said : “FAITH” IS NOT ARGUABLE by anyone over another and one may reject it or accept it.
You say : God exists and there’s no such thing as God have ENDLESS debates.
So it is the same : Arguments or Debates are useless in the matter of belief (faith). Whether God or superstition – it is one’s faith in it.
          Live and let live.

There are no two things between what I first said and the
explaining of the same thing in detail . I have given further
explanation to my comment to make my point very clear to
anyone reading it . And there’s no need here about Live
and let live type of lecture !

…… ” to make my point very clear to ANYONE reading it”… Yes, let the readers judge.
Presume you are not interested in “to live and let live” by the disdainful dismissal. One’s choice.
And yet be argumentative and debate about something like faith which “is beyond reason, not based on reason” as you yourself said. And “blind faith” is worse. A little pointless is it not, to proceed.
Nearly impossible to give sight to the blind.

” Nearly impossible to give sight to the blind.” Exactly !
This is what I meant all along and thank you for finally
                understanding it .

Oh No. Am I losing my marbles ?
You said first “What is the JOB of Responsible Few to BRING PEOPLE OUT of Superstition ? ARE WE DOING THAT or adding more fuel to recruit more adherents to Blind Faith Brigade of all hues ?” Your post of 19.12.20 The start of this dialogue.
I said all along that superstition and religion are faiths, and you CANNOT BRING THEM OUT of their Faith in superstition. Not arguable.
So I said finally : Nearly impossible to give sight to the blind. Meaning you CANNOT BRING PEOPLE OUT OF blind Faith (belief) as you asked. In that context I also added : Live and Let live meaning each to his own belief.
Now you say you AGREE and THAT is what you MEANT ALL ALONG.
                  Indeed a very strange ending.

“Losing your marbles” has a metaphorical meaning from time immemorial. Marbles here does not have the literal meaning of little glass balls to “lose”. When Vincent Van Gogh said : “Conscience is a man’s compass,” he did not expect you to have a compass in your pocket.

In a crisis, people will believe anything, even idiocy. It is up to those who govern, the intelligentsia, to guide everyone back onto the correct path. Unfortunately our ruling intelligentsia is made up of mental retards and minor or major thieves and criminals, with a few voiceless individuals. So they promote idiocy, holding a toast up and posing for photos. What the hell, there is financial benefits anywhere, if not a few more votes. So people will pay and drink this rot and believe themselves invincible when Covid comes around. That’s how Covid spreads, would have already spread.

I am surprised how backwards SL is in the 21st Century, despite the claim of high literacy (90%?) for a third world country, in which case, the literacy is limited to reading & writing only, not rational thinking. I can understand old ladies in backward hamlets believing in supernatural powers with gods & goddesses appearing in dreams with solutions to problems for the greater good & mixing folklore & myths with historical facts but when the Minister of Health, supported by 2 female western medical practitioners turned politicians publicly endorsing , magic potions’ best described as snake oil in the guise of Ayrvedic medicine

…… when the Ayrvedic Ministry itself is labelling it as a food supplement & not a medicine. The Health Minister has proved beyond doubt her level of education & should resign in shame, not to mention the other political cronies who have been promoting this ‘wonder drug’ & misleading the gullible public. Pity the health Minister didn’t keep her word & jump into the sea, sacrificing herself as in the folklore for the betterment of the country. SL can certainly do without these uneducated politicians.

      Dear Raj UK,
While I hold no candle for the Rajas or any other doctrine, we must try to be fair by everyone, especially are health services, PHIs and lab technicians, as well as Police and Forces all who spared no effort or sacrifice, and performed. Where it is bad say bad but take time to see the other side. Leave the rotten politicos aside.
What is the measure of success in tackling this Covid 19 menace. Each country adopted their own way to meet the challenge.
Would the deaths per Million of the population be a reasonable guide ? I do not say it is but consider the following:
      Deaths per 1M per country.
      US 997/ UK 1004/ Italy 1156/ Spain 1059/ Netherlands 620/ Belgium 1621/ Sweden 806/ Switzerland 797/ Portugal 614/ New Zealand 425/ Australia 35/ Sri Lanka 9.
      https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/?utm_campaign=homeAdUOA?#countries
And these are the so called Western developed countries with also Australian and NZ. So comparatively 1. We have tackled it better 2. Our genes are good 3. We have been lucky. Whatever it is, this is what it is !!

he present Government led by the President has been very successful from the beginning to lead the general public up the garden path of distraction from the TRUTH for nothing but to capture the power and remain in power. Remember, how the “NAGAYA” emerged from the Kelani River with “DATU KARANDUWA” (made in China) and the Chief Priest authenticated it having heard the “Ngaya” made a huge sound when emerging from the waters of Kelani river) . Before this “PENI KOLAMA”, there were several of such “NADAGAMAS” staged to hoodwink the people. Remember the “INHALING MUTTIYA”. With that losing popularity, another “SUDIYA” came and was named “SUDARSHINI”. After that, the “ROYAL VEDA” introduced the “KUNDALEE MUTTIYA” and the “Ministers” including the Minister of Health dashed the “Water Pot” in the rivers. All those “TACTICS” losing peoples’ attention, this “Peni Kolama” had been introduced. While all these “Magical Performances” were going on in the “Miracle of Asia” the world concentrated on facing the COVID 19 in finding a “Medicine” plus solutions to keep rolling the “Economy” and “Wellbeing” of the People. Now another “Professor” from “Viyathmaga” – the Ambassador to Myanmar – Prof. Nalin de Silva has come forward to “Condemn” the “Pfizer” injection used worldwide.

The university professor appointed to this so-called high-level team to investigate the Kali Amma ‘Wattoruwa’ for a Covid-19 cure do a disservice to their education and the institutions they represent should they accept their appointments. What will they be investigation next? The Elixir of Eternal Life? Will the government next appoint the Goda Weda Mahattaya, who I’m told is also a carpenter, to build everyone’s dream, a Stairway to Heaven?

How serious is this report? There certainly appears to be wide-spread concern over it?
    .
    https://edition.cnn.com/2020/12/20/uk/uk-coronavirus-variant-intl-gbr/index.html
    .
This is the sort of thing that professionals must study seriously. Too much of what we are doing is to satisfy political considerations.
    .
If, as that report proclaims, there is a new mutant strain that spreads even faster, the last thing that we should be doing is opening our borders for tourists to come in. In any event, given the adverse publicity that our racist military regime has been receiving recently, not many tourists will come.
    .
The Tourism Lobby may, in desperation, request that our borders be opened, but I ask that some virologist study carefully those reports (and there are other blogs) that a new wave is about to hit the world.
    .
Please don’t respond to what I’ve said without reading that blog.

      Sinhala_Man ,

There are few things people like Srilankans won’t be able to grasp .
I strongly believe , never mind it matters or not , that we are in a
pit that doesn’t seem to have a bottom ! This is my shortest possible
calculation, however bitter it is to swallow ! Now to the point , I have
a reasonable amount of experience in Europe and especially UK .
UK residents , especially vulnerable elders get a flu jab every year
free of any fee and available for others for a small fee . This flu is a
virus that has different variant every year and so is the vaccination
against it . According to medical professionals , the vaccine is about
80% powerful to protect you from the attack , leaving you out with
20 % risk of still getting infected ( no face-masks required). The most
recommended answer is Paracetamol . And lightly affected such
patients take some other home remedies along with Paracetamol
knowing well the fact that the flu dies off only after its due course of
stay which depends on the severity and defence measures . So, my
message here is that Europeans have generations of experience with
this kind of a situation . This time around , the situation is of course
different but they are a very strong people and they have the power
to get out of it . But to our guys , every second is a second to play
politics with everything . Dammika-Juice and Muslim cremation are
two such situations to address the issue !

I think that this “DB peniya” joke will die down -after causing a fair amount of harm and helping to spred the disease owing to crowd congregation.
        .
However, this Muslim cremation business is going to do long term damage, and that despite authorities like this speaking out:

What’s your point here ? Vaccine got to be ready even before the
virus identified , to prove EUROPEANS are a smart lot ? OR , is it
someone else from some other parts of the world that came up
with the rescue package ? Not to offend any one but people die of
diseases and numbers go up and come down . Today’s news in
Srilanka reports that Kautara district has over taken Colombo with
          the spread numbers !

            0

The simple point is that my comment has nothing to do with the vaccine or rescue package or the local spread in SL.
It is that comparatively our deaths per 1 Million of population is better than all those countries named.
With all the experience of the Europeans as you say, they have not done enough to contain the spread, and their death rate is higher.

Thank you anyway for the reply . And I don’t see why one
wanted to compare Covid casualties among other countries
to Glorify the situation we are in . Your list of countries are
all cold weather countries , one can not match our country
with these countries . Virus condition escalates due to
freezing weather condition and it was expected by everyone
in Europe . By your standard , Europe and other parts of
the world that was not affected by Tsunami disaster , have
to be proud of themselves that they had zero casualty ?
But thank you for exposing what you are standing for !

“By your standard , Europe and other parts of the world that was not affected by Tsunami disaster, have to be proud of themselves that they had zero casualty ?”

Not the best analogy. Definitely not my standard. Here we are talking about ALL countries having the same pandenic, while the Tsunami was localized and naturally not worldwide for equal evaluation. Further this Covid is a continuing menace, and not a one-off which caught everyone by surprise like a tsunami.

To recap, our exchange started with you:….”So, my message here is that Europeans have GENERATIONS OF EXPERIENCE with this kind of a situation . …they are a very strong people and they have THE POWER to get out of it.”
Natural implication being Europeans are superior as that is a “comparative” statement..
I only pointed out that ONE WAY of evaluation, is by the death rate per 1 million of population. On this basis Europeans do not seem to have come on top of this pandemic – not a Tsunami.
My comment was only to balance the point of view.

When I said ” Generations of experience” I went on to
explain about flu jab every year and that was the
example to back up my statement . You are now
explaining how you have taken it ! Well , you got what
you had been looking for but my point was not your
search ! My point was clearly stated . Of course anyone
can take only one part of a statement and twist it to
suite him ! Either way I stand strongly by what I said .
It was of course a comparative statement but on a
positive note . To conclude my exchange with you I
would like to explain only one more time , to your ” On this
basis Europeans…..” Yes , Europeans have not got their
Army , Police and Navy down on the streets to control a
                  pandemic !

“Europeans have not got their Army , Police and Navy down on the streets to control a pandemic” !
A new one !! Just because they did not do it, nothing to preclude our using our available resources as we think fit. Again only what Europeans do is what matters, is it?.
Is there only one way to tackle a problem ?. Each country has its own way to meet a crisis.
This has been quite effective here. That is the acid test.

Freeman, in an effort to save his arguments of herbal treatment is many times better the Western Heath Facilities, is obstinately standing on the government report of 6/1M statistics.
This why the saying going on as “to prove a lie one has to tell nine lies”. Sadly Freeman has nothing but Aanduwa’s witness to certify his claim. Right after election Rosy said that municipality estimated infection in Colombo city is 30,000. She is also a Chief government official for her jurisdiction. Freeman is not willing to take her word. Just two three days ago Aanduwa accepted number that for the whole county. He needs to read Tamil newspapers to know how many fell and died on the roads in North East, but it was only heart attack.
Does he have a solid case even one person as cured or immunized to Covid-19 by his Paani medicines? Then I would like to hear that name from him. But all Western Pharmaceutical companies have the test result and the names of the person who showed resistance to the vaccine and who failed. They proved its effectiveness as 95% to FDA.

I’m saying this with some trepidation.
            .
My immediate neighbour (I spent two hours with him yesterday) is a Jew – by religion, or should I say by religious background.
            .
He doesn’t like my publicising it, but I feel that in this context he won’t mind. Why doesn’t he like publicity of the fact? Because first Christopher Marlowe with Barabbas in his play “The Jew of Malta” (not known to many) and next William Shakespeare with Shylock (less of a caricature than Barabbas) has fixed in people’s minds a nasty image.
            .
That has been re-inforced by Zionism.
            .
He says: Muslims, Christians, and Jews are all sure that there’s only one God. Therefore, they all worship the same God. Even some Hindus say all gods can be amalgamated into manifestations of Shiva. Gauthama said it was all beyond human reason.
            .
Muslims state very clearly that Allah cannot be understood by us. That concept is superior to what most Christians harbour. Why not say that agnosticism is not so unsavoury?
            .
All those participating here appear to be intelligent and rational; why not we resolve to be a group that promotes mutual respect?
            .
            Amen

…we resolve to be a group that promotes mutual respect?….
Great idea in the season of Christmas and the New Year ahead. In fact this year, Nature has through Covid 19, humbled us to show we are mere mortals, clueless and looking for solutions, in this vast Cosmos, which has existed for 13.8 BILLION YEARS, without our help and ideas.
Let the rancour stop in these short lives we live. In a hundred years it makes no difference what CT readers said or did..
              Good luck and Cheers.

The country and people fully deserve such crooks and politicians. This has been a staple fodder provided by politicians since independence in different portions and it just continues amid pandemic and economic melt down. We saw this after Easter and with many imaginative enemies Rajapaksas created for them self. Rajapaksas have mastered the vulnerabilities of their supportes and have abundant supplies to cater them.

Thanks, Colombo Telegraph for what you have done below this.
      .
What appears here is not what I had done; it was far more exhausting and time-consuming. I laboriously listed all 17 of Dr Janapriya’s articles.
      .
I think that “chiv” being a “physician” will be intelligent enough to use that link. I mean that you cannot be a doctor without being reasonably intelligent. The intelligence of politicians is of a different sort! Let’s see if others can use it.
      .
I’m also making a comment below the latest article by Dr W A Wijewardena which has a bearing on this particular comment.
      .
      https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/a-childs-guide-to-modern-monetary-theory-keynesianism-in-an-old-bottle/
      .
So many readers complain that while the articles here are good the comments are terrible. The best and most serious articles get the fewest responses, and that is often the fate of Dr Wijewardena’s articles, despite all the trouble that he takes to simplify.
      .
Since Dr Wijewardena has written over 500 articles, what I did with Dr Janapriya’s output can hardly be replicated there.

    Dear chiv,
    .
I understand your pessimism and disillusionment. I had you in mind when I compiled this list of articles by Dr Janapriya.
    .
I did not know who this honest, consistent and dedicated surgeon was until a few months ago. Now I have managed to establish email contact with him. Therefore I know that the five month break in his warnings between May and October was because after his wife had a fall, he had to do the housework!
    .
If you want to know how I compiled this list, ask me. There’s little purpose doing things which nobody is interested in!

chiv, you have, before this, indicted that you were not able to dig into the archives.
      .
The same result that is achieved by clicking on that link can be achieved by clicking on the author’s name (in this case, M.M. Janapriya) which appears in orange above the article, and below the logos for Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp. I was careful to get the punctuation right.
      .
The other option given you is to search in the Archives to the right of the photograph of the author. That may be useful if it is by an author whom you have forgotten, and what you remember is the month when it appeared – or if it is a serndipitous search. Not recommended.
      .
Far easier is to place all the details that you remember in the Google browser, starting with “Colombo Telegraph”.

Sinhala man, the cocerns are real. The virus has mutated and causing a new wave mostly in UK,other European Countries, today reported in Australia and we know for a fact it has already entered Lanka (brought by foreigners who still managed to enter and exit while BIA is closed for casual travel. There is all probabilities it has entered India too. Because of community infection (though both govt have officially denied) it is near impossible to track primary anymore. Will the new vaccine will protect against this mutant variety is anyone’s guess. More concerning is pets/animals have been detected with Covid Virus, so the eradication is going to take much more time and efforts, than what was thought. The mutant virus seems to spreading much faster than its parent, not sure about resistance to conventional treatment and severity. I am sure you are aware, I was adamant not to accept the non sensical version of our govt. Lanka is one of the few with no concrete plans to get vaccine. It may cost closer to $ Billion and only now they are thinking of applying for loans. Most probably Chinese may endup dumping theirs at a higher cost.

SM, I am very concerned about the potential laws to register digital news websites. Though I do not use much other than CT, I still will like to know about it. Please let us know the real facts. If govt decides to monitor or supress , I may quit from commenting in these spaces.

chiv, I don’t think that the proposed move will affect you – I certainly would like to continue seeing your comments. The anxiety must be that we, in Sri Lanka, may not be able to access sites.
    .
It was only the Yahapalanaya victory of January 2015 that allowed me to get to know this site. Before that I had heard that it was possible to access variously banned sites, but we naturally didn’t know what we were missing. If now banned, I will try my hand at “proxy sites”.
    .
How will this affect you? If readership drops, you may decide that it’s just not worth your while commenting, but it shouldn’t otherwise affect you, since it is beamed here from London.
    .
Meanwhile, I will continue to pick up the email addresses of those whom I respect, like you, chiv – but this is not a request!
    .
If they indeed monitor movememnts, it won’t be fun, but then they want tourists. Who will come to a military state?

The writer, a learned gentleman, has, I presume, inadvertently made a remark without giving due considerations to the sensibilities of devout Hindus. In this article, inter alia, he comments “This subtle act brought the beast out of the God (or Angel Kali Amma) and the sick guy tried to take the monk to task.”

Goddess Kali is venerated and worshiped by Hindus all over the world and more prominence is given in Bengal. Goddess Kali is one of the Hindu pantheon of Gods, a form of Goddess Maha Shakthi, whose blessing is sought to obtain valour and strength to destroy the wickedness.

It is regrettable and unfortunate that among a section of Sinhala Buddhists, particularly among rural folks, there is a wide spread practice of invoking Kali Ammah to put curse on their enemies. This is totally unethical and contrary to the Hindu concept of Goddess Shakthi.

No God has beastly qualities as pointed by the learned writer as in the case of above sentence of his (brought the beast out of the God). The article is a good one and thought provoking barring his comment which, in my opinion, is somewhat derogatory and sarcastic. The writer, I think, might have commented unwittingly.

A very gracious and balanced reply indeed, expressing your thoughts and views.

A quote from Prof Charles Sarvan’s last contribution to CT.
“Truth is not truth unless spoken gently, derives from the words and example of Marcus Aurelius. Truth, if spoken unkindly, serves only to alienate and antagonise. It may silence the other but does not convince or persuade”…A Passage to India – E M Forster

When systems of belief get mixed up, it is important that we try to understand concerns:

I have no familiarity with this monk; although he speaks forcefully, it doesn’t mean that he’s anti-Tamil or anti-Hindu.

I was only stating the obvious in the context of all the rancour around, and which serves hardly any purpose. Your was a breath of fresh air.
      Great work.

    PART ONE
    .
    Dear Ferryman,
    .
I’d like to draw your attention to your comment just above what I’m going to post – without indent, if you know what I mean. There are some who read these articles mainly on mobile phones. One indent doesn’t matter; five will make reading difficult.
    .
This is your comment that I refer to.
    .
    Ferryman / December 23, 2020
    .
It is most unlikely, actually that any comments will intervene twixt these two. As I’ve been saying recently, the most valuable articles get very few comments. Those dealing with “Who came here first? Sinhalayo or Tamils, or “who are Muslims?” get hundreds of comments.

.”Those dealing with ‘Who came here first? Sinhalayo or Tamils, or who are Muslims?’ get hundreds of comments”………………
Signs of the times now prevailing in SL, a society divided and fractured by our political brigade – of ALL hues. Made worse by Diasporas with axes to grind or some sense of superiority of their new domiciles, fuelling discord by preaching from afar.
THAT is the reality WE IN SL live with.
Best wishes for the New Year ahead.

    PART TWO
    .
I’m sure that you remember this exchange between us; you have quoted from there:
    .
    Ferryman: “Dear SM.
OMG – do you realise what you said?”
    .
    I replied:

    “Dear Ferryman,
    .
Yes, I did realise what I was saying. I value Prof. Sarvan immensely, and send him the occasional brief email. No wish to tire him with long tales of woe.”

    .
You have not given us the link to the Sarvan article. Here it is.
    .

    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/a-philosopher-emperor/
    .

Well worth reading, even if it is too late to comment. Actually, you could comment right here, since I intend emailing the link to this article, to Prof. Sarvan.

    PART THREE
    .
Just remembered to state, that a day later, Professor Sarvan himself sent me a brief thanking letter. Like all of us, and like Marcus Aurelius (many of his children died before him), Sarvan too has many sorrows to contend with.
    .
I can now tell Sarvan that I forwarded that letter to the guy calling himself “MyView”. I’m sure that it is Sarvan’s classmate, “Wanigs”. You may have noticed that “MyView” has been making some outstanding comments since then. I must warn you that I haven’t checked with “Wanigs”. The last I heard from him on the subject was him agonising over how they should be addressing one another when they last remembered each other as school kids in 1950. Incredible reluctance to find a solution, given that he’s one of the cleverest guys I have ever met.
    .
How the two of them solved that problem, I don’t know. There even is the slight possibility that “Wanigs” did not write. Incidentally, don’t ask me for the identity of the guy, because he thinks it unnecessary for me to keep disclosing my identity.

    PART FOUR
    .
I have spent seven hours finding out, from Wikipedia, about Marcus Aurelius. If anybody expects a summary of what I learnt, “No way”. Bad enough my reading about the man only 1,800 years later in English, whereas Marcus wrote purely for self-improvement, in Greek. I’m not going to now pose as an authority after seven hours study! If you cannot find the time to do what I have – just forget it all.
    .
“leelagemalli” is arguably our sincerest commenter. I have been urging him to read and think more, and make fewer comments.
    .
    Dear V P Singam / December 23, 2020
    .
This will interest you as well. If I email Dr Janapriya, he will, I’m sure tell me that he had no intention whatever to insult the Hindu goddess.

This other article, I saw about eighteen hours ago – only 9 comments yet:
    .
    https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/regime-failure-grassroot-anger-ineffective-opposition/
    .
I must go there and say how wonderful it is. How I wish I could write like that.
    .

    .
It may have to be much later, since the time is 6.10 am, and I must prepare and have yesterday’s (sic) dinner before sleeping!

When I first saw Dr Janapriya’s article, I must confess that I thought he was labouring the obvious, that the combined medical profession, Western and also Ayurveda, would effectively shoot it down.
    .
Yet there are videos showing that even on Christmas Day (technically yesterday) a website had shown huge crowds congregating outside Dhammika Bandara’s house, neglecting social distancing, and thus, perhaps, spreading the virus.
    .
What this means is that a sizable number of Sri Lankans are gullible. Now that may not be sufficient by itself to win elections, but it does underline the fact that it is going to be extremely difficult to get people to think with sufficient rationality to elect good governments for this island.
    .
Even this fear of burying the COVID dead continues, causing so much damage to relations between communities. Can’t people see that a possible 1% chance must be discounted? Every one of us must die, one way or another. We need not cause so much unhappiness and stress among the living owing to supposed danger.
