Dinesh Breaks Coconuts

Dinesh Gunawardena, MP is an old friend and neighbour of mine. A good man he is, and I always respected him. His Dad was a youthful hero for me. However, it is with a mixture of amusement, bemusement and dissapointment that I observe his behaviour since the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa. The newspapers report that he has organised a trip to the Seeni Devale in a little island in the South noted for occult practices and black magic performed by desperate persons to supplicate an imaginary god and typically pray for harm to enemies.

Dinesh has moved to prayer in order to stop the “revenge,” on the Rajapaksa family, which according to him now takes place. He wants to curse the yahapalanaya government and bring it down without even the votes of the people.

POLThe Yahapalanaya government set up by President Maitripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe had sought and won a mandate from the people to investigate charges of corruption and abuse by the Rajapaksa regime.

There was absolutely no doubt that the broad electorate and independent civil organisations had been traumatised by the daily gossip about alleged huge corruption by that regime. Besides the gossip, the very conduct of the regime had been full of impunity, irresponsibility and extravagance that were in such magnitude that these acts hit the very sensibilities of right thinking and socially conscious people and seemed to confirm the perceptions of corruption, abuse and murder.

External behavioural manifestations of conduct unveiled a lot. The disregard for the law and for due process was shocking. Critical incidents included the arrest of war warrior General Sarath Fonseka and the impeachment of Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. There were numerous other incidents that could be listed with ease.

It was evident that Mahinda Rajapaksa, having given political leadership to the war, was on a personal course of self-aggrandisement. Mahinda, instead of using the success of the war to turn the country around and turn our relationships with Tamil brethren around, took a different course. Mahinda rode a blind horse of power driven by personal greed although cloaked in nationalist slogans.

Dinesh and his ilk should have done a world of good if they warned MR and tried to put him right. The success in war was a Kalinga moment for Sri Lanka, which if used that way, could have given automatic eternity to Rajapaksa rule instead of resorting to the hideous 18th Amendment. Yet, Dinesh did not do that warning to his Monarchist friend. Now they have all fallen along with Humpty Dumpty.

Like the desperate ordinary person referred to earlier, Dinesh and his crew are desperate. Only ignorant persons engage in Black Magic. Imploring deities like this was a practice of the pre-scientific age of man. It was widely practised during the days of the Vedas in India 2000 years BC. Sri Lanka still has remnants of that early folly and Kapuralas, otherwise unemployable, earn good money whether in Kataragama or in Seeni Devale.

People have always had Gods. When the first person saw lightning strike a tree and start a fire, that person needed a way to make sense of what they had just witnessed.Since they had no concept of electricity, positive and negative charge, or static, they needed to explain to themselves and others, what had happened, in terms they could understand. A God was born.

So people prayed to the gods following the elaborate ritual of the pooja. One essential element of the Vedic pooja is to offer ‘upachara,’ or gifts to the god. The god would not be moved without a bribe. In Dinesh’s pooja hundred thousand coconuts will be offered! The Grama Seveka in the area charges that 700 counts had been stolen from a government property. But the god wouldn’t mind people stealing to give him upachara. It is a selfish god.

Barren Sinhalese women have harmless poojas like the offers to Pattini – a woman deity in order to seek fertility. Incidentally the Goddess Pattini is the deification of Kannagi, who is the central character of the Tamil epic Silapadhikaram of Ilango Adigal, written in India after the 2nd Century CE. After a short time, it was introduced into Sri Lanka and absorbed earlier deities such as Kiri Amma (‘milk mother’). Historians attribute the introduction of goddess Pattini to the island to Gajabahu I, a Sinhalese king who ruled Sri Lanka from 113 – 135 CE..

Such pre-scientific beliefs have got embedded into the collective psyche of ordinary people so much that Buddhist temples are full of them. The Buddha rejected a creator God and he considered that deities are only a higher order of life in samsara. There is little they can do and they are also subject to death and disease. However, that wasn’t a comfortable idea to Buddhists who, instead, opted for the Vedic God. Mahayanic forms of Buddhism and Vajryayana are full of deities and celestial Buddhas. In the pre-scientific age the Vedic god concept and the Mahayanic forms offered more meaning to Buddhists in Sri Lanka and elsewhere. Temple Buddhism in Sri Lanka has not got rid of these superstitions.

Isn’t it amusing, therefore, to see Dinesh going back to the dark pre-historic times and leading the so-called Joint Opposition to the altar of the god at Seenigama? Aren’t these leaders wanting to rule the country and to guide it? With rubbish like this in their heads, they cannot have the cognitive capacity to meet the complex activity of governance. For any county to prosper the ruling class must be enlightened; must be modern;must be open to scientific solutions. This is why Plato urged that Philosophers should be kings. It seems Dinesh and his men are closed and closed and closed.

The Joint Opposition have a simple solution to their worry about investigations against the Rajapaksa family, namely, to allow the enquiries to proceed so that the Rajapaksas are cleared?

If the Rajapaksas are innocent why be terrorised by ongoing investigations?

Why the hell did`t these troglodyte politicos think of smashing coconuts against the LTTE if they are so sure of the efficacy of their action? Why do they smash only coconuts? Surely they can smash Labu, Puhul and Wattakka also because they would sound even better and also go to juicy pieces like the presents SLFP! This is all bloody bullshit! If Dinesh prefers let him smash his own Labba there at Seenigama and see how fine he would feel. It could be a foolish feeling which only a fool can feel!

      RE: Dinesh Breaks Coconuts

You should have Titled it “Woodhead Dinesh Breaks Coconuts”.

“Dinesh Gunawardena, MP is an old friend and neighbour of mine. A good man he is, and I always respected him. His Dad was a youthful hero for me. However, it is with a mixture of amusement, bemusement and disappointment that I observe his behaviour since the defeat of Mahinda Rajapaksa. The newspapers report that he has organised a trip to the Seeni Devale in a little island in the South noted for occult practices and black magic performed by desperate persons to supplicate an imaginary god and typically pray for harm to enemies.”

Thanks for the Story. Very Interesting.

Wonder, if he consulted with Mahinda Rajapaksa, or his astrologer.

“Dinesh has moved to prayer in order to stop the “revenge,” on the Rajapaksa family, which according to him now takes place. He wants to curse the yahapalanaya government and bring it down without even the votes of the people.”

Now he wants the blessings of the Gods, to save MaRa, his family and the cronies. Will the Bodhi Poojas help?

May be he needs to sing the Jaya Mangala Gatha, in the Original Pali, once in the morning, and one in the evening, until the Yahapalanaya State is taken by the Gods.

Jaya Mangala Gatha-Verses of Auspicious Victory (rare Pali version)-Buddhist Chants. This might cure his MaRa ailment.

Based on the Book of Protection (Paritta Sutta) from the Pali canon, the Jaya Mangala Gatha is sung here in a rare recording by the Mahabodhi Society of India in original Pali. The Jaya Mangala Gatha is a chant recommended by the Buddha to destroy negativity and to generate auspiciousness. It proclaims the 8 major victories of the Buddha which are:

      1) Victory over Mara, MaRa
      2) Victory over the demon Alavaka,Dinesh
      3) Victory over the wild elephant Nalagiri, Ajang Gammanpila
      4) Victory over serial killer Angulimala, Gotabaya
      5) Victory over the evil intentions of Cinca who sought to defame, Pavitra
      6) Victory over the haughty brahmin Saccaka, Vasudeva
      7) Victory over the serpent king Nandopananda, Weerawansa
      8) Victory over the false views of Brahma Baka, Dayan

It is important to understand that most of these are allegorical stories that relate to the Buddha defeating the negative aspects of his (Mara and Alavaka) and others’ minds.
It is said that these verses if chanted with a clear and pure intention are helpful in protecting the seeker by attracting the Good around.
The Pali pronunciation here is exemplary and difficult to find.

Shaymon’s lot are getting so desperate that they even go after our Sinhala Buddhist women who are barren.to attack Sinhala Buddhism.

    How sad..

I know Shaymon’s Heroes don’t have any sons or daughters to keep giving them Yahapalanaya going forward..

So they are stuck with Sirisena Juniors, Kumaranatunga Juniors and most probably Rajitha Junior who might trump the lot, given his Dad’d total domination of this Yahapalananya.

Perhaps Shaymon and his mates should have broken coconuts too to make their leaders fertile.

And got the women to pray to Shiva Lingam..

Or they should have held Novena with Chikera as soon as Chandrika sacked Batalanda Ranil in the 90s.

You seem to be getting better at expressing the total confusion in that thing located at the top of your anatomy. But then, I suppose, one can blame the intoxication of MR bribes for that condition.

Don’t know about Maithripala, Ranil certainly has won many mandates except Buddhika Pathirana and Dayasiri Jayasekera. True?

You are one heck of a lucky dude..mate.

Wonder why none of Ranil’s traditional and erstwhile mates Vellala TNA didn’t join even as partners of the UNP government , let alone following you lot and getting the restricted membership.

        Mr E van der P,

To respond to this K.A.S. is to dignify him. Those of us who have nerves, muscles and sinew from shoulder upwards and put them all to good use, may want to totally ignore this man who has proven time and time again that he is just wood from neck upwards.

    Beautifully written Shyamon.
Anyway who is Plato to MaRa Bros & co ?
GoRa may ask Plato who and is he related to Las an that who ?

I have a feeling that the economic advisors like Dayan,HLDM,Rohan, must have advised Dinesh and gang to start coconut oil production in Seeing am a and then diverse into making small arms using coconut shell and other products from the coconut and rubber trees.
Avant Garde offshore experience will come handy to them. Wimal is a potential candidate for Director of Sales. He has good international network after his recent trips to various countries.

I thought Mahinda was his God? But Mahinda too would visit numerous temples and kovils including South India.

Gods seem to have deserted Mahinda so now ‘God of Coconuts’ would do? I thought DG was a staunch Buddhist?

    • 13
      0

      B Mackka,

There’s a huge difference between staunch Buddhist and a staunch Sinhala-Buddhist.The former clearly understands the Buddhas’s teachings; the Dhamma, while the latter, has no idea what it is.

DG is a classic example of the latter.

    Sumane,

Advise your buddy pals, Booruwansa, Gonawardane, Gembampila and the gang to seek sooth saying from Sumanadasa (MARA’s Soothsayer), the country would save a lot of coconut for the poor.

His predictions saved us the country from the Brute Murderous Dictator who was raping and pillaging Mother Lanka like a blood sucker.

If these idiots are also directed to him, it will do a world of good for the prosperity of the people of our country. You can be the last to go to him, otherwise no fun in this forum.

        Emil,
I am too old enough to remember all the riots from 1957. Even saw with my own eyes the attacks on Tamil leaders and other performing Satyagraha. Dinesh’s father Philip was not a part of the “Goondas”. Philip was more concerned in carrying out his socialist economic programs starting with the Paddy Lands Act. When he could not do this he left the SWRD Govt. together with William de Silva and others.

BUT. see that they are MADE to eat the same coconuts as meals

What foolishness! The 100,000 coconuts in the form of Pol Sambol could have served a million people. If the broken coconuts were sold in bulk, as most Hindu temples do, I will not call it a waste or a sin. There are also allegations that these coconuts were stolen from a plantation in Galle. If so, it is a crime! There is cause for the police to act.

There is symbolism in the act of breaking coconuts in Hindu temples and religious ceremonies, which many Hindus themselves do not understand. It is definitely not to feed their hungry Gods.

The coconut represents man, with his spiritual purity/goodness-the white kernel- ennveloped in ego- the hard shell. The symbolism is that one has to negate ego, to bring out the spirituality within.

It is ego that in an ultimate sense that destroyed the Rajapakse presidency. I hope the 100,000 broken coconuts represent the gigantic ego that was shattered. I hope everyone participating in the event would see light now. It will not curse or bring down the present regime or propitiate the Gods or Devils they believe in. I hope we will see a better man in the form of Mahinda Rajapase from today.

    Dr.Rajasingham Narendran

Thank you for elucidating the real meaning of the devotional act of breaking the coconut with patience and kindness. It is regrettable that many persons made this an occasion to insult religion and in particular theistic beliefs, displaying no knowledge or idea of what the meaning of the word Veda means, let alone making any meaningful commentary.I am a Buddhist myself and it is quite common among us in our haughtiness arising from reading bit about what the Buddha taught but not really practicing any of it,to put other’s beliefs down. They forget the Edict carved in stone by one of the greatest known followers of the Buddha the Emperor Dharmashoka which reads as follows”One should NOT honour only one’s own religion and condemn the religions of others, but one SHOULD honour others religions for this reason or that reason. So doing one helps one’s own religion to grow and renders service to the religions of others too.In acting otherwise one one digs the grave of one’s own religion and also does harm to other religions.Whosoever honours his own religion and condemns the others does so indeed through devotion to his own religion, thinking”I will glorify my own religion. But,on the contrary ,in so doing he injures his own religion more gravely. So Concord is good.Let all listen, and be willing to listen to the doctrines professed by others” It is a sermon in stone and most beautiful. It is the same simple doctrine which defines “Love all Serve all,Help ever Hurt never”

Now Dinesh and other henchmen have nothing to do except dashing coconut.
They have to dash coconut on their won heads rather somewhere else.

Congratulations Shyamon, an excellent paper. The following is a classic:
“The Buddha rejected a creator God and he considered that deities are only a higher order of life in samsara. Temple Buddhism in Sri Lanka has not got rid of these superstitions”. Please keep up such refreshing thoughts. Bensen

Investigation of the deeds or misdeeds of Rajapakse brothers or alleged war crimes will lead to the truths hidden or buried by the perpetrators and fear that they have to pay the price. So they move heaven and earth to stop it. People like Dinesh, once a marxist, is worried that he will never be able to gain power if the investigations are allowed to its ultimate eventuality. Another leftist Vasudeva Nanayakare seems to have realised the depth that Rajapakse might sink into that he realised his personal gain, if any, that may be achieved is not worth the risk that is involved in supporting MR.

Hindus break coconut in temples, in most cases not knowing its significance, in order to get freed from hard ego and attain the inner soft goodness. In this case, too, they break 100,000 coconuts wastefully to bribe the Goddess to stop the investigation against their heroic ruler, MR. They aught to know that it’s a waste but try to impress their hero that they are doing what they can to appeal to the almighty.

The truth will come out one day of any wrong doing. The perpetrators and silence and active participants also will be legally responsible and pay their respective prices.

Let them believe what they believe. And fine, if he wants to break a coconut or two, let him do so. But 100,000????? Does this inhumane ignorant fool realize there are people in the world dying because they don’t have food? Their organs collapse and fail because all they eat is mud and sand! If this clown spent his resources feeding them instead, he will have much better karma than if he cracked a bunch of coconuts!

With or without coconuts, karmic justice will be duly served.

In the karmic court of law, the judge and jury are one and the same. There are no law’s delays either. And the verdict cannot be swayed by unscrupulous lawyers or a corrupt judiciary either.

The final sentence meted out by the karmic court will be ruthless and merciless; far worse than any human can think of.

No coconut or God can intervene in this process.

    Just mark my words!

In my village, the people fear to participate in these “occult” practices, if they themselves consciously feel that they are “guilty” of any crime; because it bring “disaster” in double or triple form. This man, Dinesh Gunawardane received my sincere honour and admiration some time back and always thought him to be a fitting and proper person to be a Prime Minister. But, Alas, what happened to him. Nothing surprising, because as per the Gauthama Buddhas teaching: “Asewanacha Baalanag” (Do not associate the “LOWLY” of actions) brings the downfall. Let him ROT in that “Avvechiya” (Hell) because it is his own choice. I feel sorry for him.

I fully endorse the call in the poster “Dehiyange namen palayalla”
Roughly translated, it can also mean “In the name of God, go” This celebrated statement – made during the days of Oliver Cromwell – rhymes quite well with the prayer of most Sri Lankans, across the ethnic divide, to demand the Medamulana Rajapakses to take leave from the political stage.

Amarasiri is a sensible and intelligent participant in the CT conversation. But the following is misleading, so I like to respectfully point that out. Let me quote him first:

“May be he needs to sing the Jaya Mangala Gatha, in the Original Pali, once in the morning, and one in the evening, until the Yahapalanaya State is taken by the Gods. Jaya Mangala Gatha-Verses of Auspicious Victory (rare Pali version)-Buddhist Chants. This might cure his MaRa ailment. Based on the Book of Protection (Paritta Sutta) from the Pali canon, the Jaya Mangala Gatha is sung here in a rare recording by the Mahabodhi Society of India in original Pali…”

The Jayamangala gatha exist in “original Pali” everywhere, so there is nothing special about this version as far as the language is concerned. It’s the standard version, not “a rare Pali version”.
There nothing called the “Paritta Sutta”.
The Mahabodhi Society version Amarasiri wants us to listen to is no more “original Pali” than any other version. Here he is confusing language with accent. The Mahabodhi Society version, which was recently making the rounds, is sung in the accent of a native speaker of a North Indian language, most probably Maharastrian. That’s the only difference between that version and the one familiar to us. The two of course are musically different, but that’s not what Amarasiri us talking about.

It proves, does n’t it, that the people indulging in this sort of nefarious, black-magic type of activities are in fact mental? Their minds still dwell in the middle ages; if not, how could anyone trust these people to carry the responsibility of the governance of a country.

They are also stupid to think that deities, if they are there, behave as mere mortals like those who were worshipping them, projecting their hatred for anything that differs from their mentality. The hatred that they carry is so blinding, they cannot see it burning their own souls, or whatever goodness that they have brought with them to this world at their births.

Now think of the one-million coconuts that these goons have wasted, you oafs, it is income for some person or if not 500 Million cents or 5 million Ruppees that you thrown into the bin, when the very people that voted these jokers in to their parliamentary seats are suffering from hunger. What a waste.

As peoples representative they dare not behave with that slight and disregard towards the law, on the other hand, while what cause to behave to seek this divine help by demonic practice to save their fellow-creatures from the law of the land is a paradox. Total disregard for the law is not what god wants may be the demons.

Aiyo pol sambol and Aiyo Buddhism. “Buddha called all of these practices ‘low art’ and on many occasions, stated that such things are of no use, as we have to take responsibility for our own lives. In the Anguttara Nikaya Buddha stated that this is how responsible people act:

‘They do not get carried away by superstition; they believe in deeds, aspiring to results from their own deeds through their own effort in a rational way; they are not excited by wildly rumoured superstition, talismans, omens or lucky charms; they do not aspire to results from praying for miracles.’”

It has always amazed me that Dinesh Gunawardana – son of the great Philip – with a good education to boot, has been such a disciple of the unprincipled and uneducated MR – to the point that he has to now resort to dashing “cursing coconuts”
The only explanation is that realizing that his MEP, without MR, would not have been able to secure even 2000 votes at the last election, and being a really good guy, he is expressing his gratitude.

Dinesh, at the end, proved to the people that he is a
crook . But this act could be more of a future riot
plan rather than a ritual non of those took part in it
believe in . They are giving a warning that if more
arrests take place , Seeni Devale God will ask them to
react so that stupid people will believe the nuts have
answered . They are up to some mischief !
