Discipline & Freedom Under The Reign Of Gota

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“…Gota’s discipline wasn’t an objective phenomenon but one that had been applied subjectively; the discipline itself was indisciplined.”

Marketing Slogans Must match Reality

There’s nothing like a well-crafted marketing slogan for a prospective Presidential candidate. Gotabaya Rajapaksa is emerging more clearly into the daylight as the Opposition’s candidate for Executive President. Against a redone image in the background of a library of books one observes our Gota, with appropriate gestures of hands, pontificating something we didn’t know:

“How can we have freedom without discipline?”

Fortunately, the slogan hasn’t any racist connotations. ‘Discipline’ is his  point of emphasis. The implication is that, if elected, Gota will guarantee discipline and then you can have your freedom.

The problem about all this is that a marketing program must match with reality. Gota’s doesn’t.

No Match

Both Gota’s library background and his slogan cries for that matching experience. A man who has not gone beyond the formal O ‘Level cannot be expected to be perceived as someone who is learned. Of course, he has a doctorate; but that is an Honorary one granted  by our impoverished and rotting universities to placate those in power and satisfy their narcissism. Our Gota, will probably use that doctorate sometime in the future.

Let’s take a look at the reality of the ten-year period of rule when Gota ran the show along with his President brother and other family siblings. It is fair to name this period as ‘Gota’s Reign.’ Like his other powerful brother Basil, Gota was known to give orders to all and sundry. Although officially a Secretary, everybody knew the truth.

Gota’s Discipline was Ruthless

The term, ‘discipline,’ comes from the Latin word,’disciplus,’ and it had something to do with the processes of making kids follow codes or rules of behaviour and enforcing them by bringing in the heavy hand of punishment, if needed. The activation of discipline still remains as punishment. Gota wants to punish us if we do not follow ‘rules.’ That is the only way to maintain discipline.

Now, we know only too well that in his reign punishment was heavy. He himself recently admitted in public that white vans were put into use in that period. All sorts of charges were rife then namely, that anybody who went counter were chastised, sent missing or murdered brutally. The illustrations of so many missing journalists come to mind and the case of Ekneligoda has come to life after Galagoda Atte Gnanasara invaded court when that case came up. There were many murders the most brutal of them being that of the Sunday Leader editor, Lasantha Wickrematunge, and that of the young rugby player, Thajudeen. Lasantha published documentation that pointed to fraud in the purchase of MIGs for the Defense Ministry that was in Gota’s control. Although it was originally stated that the purchase was a government to government deal it came to light that the purchase had been from a non-existent company in Ukraine. That incident was never investigated even after Lasantha had been ‘disciplined.’ Thajudeen’s murder was first dressed to be an accident but when government changed hands the court confirmed the youngster had been murdered. The cops had vainly tried to do the dressing and the cops came under the Ministry that Gota ran with an iron hand.

In Gota’s reign the ruthless iron hand of discipline was indeed exercised and the public must be thankful to Gota for having shown what discipline meant in the sense he used the relevant  devices.

Six Flaws in Gota’s Discipline

The problem in Gota’s discipline was manifold. First, the iron hand was not  exercised to cover all disobeyers. The hundred -exceeded cabinet of Ministers that his powerful brother headed had a majority whose names are involved with theft of taxpayer money, embezzlement of funds, bribery and so on. Many Ministers of that era are lined up in Court today.

Second, according to charges now levelled against him, Gota had not himself set an example in discipline. The best discipline is self-imposed but there is a case before court that our Supremo had embezzled treasury funds in order to build a monument for his dear Dad. (Ironically, this contrasts with the recent pics showing Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe developing a poor temple out of his own personal funds.)What transpires as far as evidence and judgment  in the Gota case is not for us to predict. The independent judiciary will decide in a week or so-and that isn’t far away.

Third, Gota’s discipline had been selectively abused. The dramatic example was that of the jailing of our then Army Commander who fought and won the war in the battlefield-Sarath Fonseka (SF).  The objections laid by SF at the time was that officers he had punished and who were persona non-grata with the latter were appointed to a cooked -up military court. In the first place the choice of using a military court instead of resorting to our civil judiciary had been a controversy. However, Gota and his brother thought otherwise and in a case that provoked the headlines, “Shame!”  in our otherwise ‘disciplined,’ national press concluded with SF being thrown to jail.

On the other hand, there was no discipline exercised at other levels where the Rajapaksa cohorts were appointed to run. Examples are SriLankan Airlines and the Ambassadors in Washington and Russia-all run by Gota relatives.

Fourth, the foundation for civil discipline in any democratic country is the judiciary. However, it is public knowledge that our judiciary had been ruined under Rajapakse control. The Chief Justice was allegedly a  man, like the Eveready Battery – ready to follow orders. Key decisions were taken in Temple Trees.

Fifth, discipline is something that should be logically extended to cover other areas such as government’s financial transactions. Financial  discipline under Gota’s reign came to virtual zero as knowing persons watched with dismay when taxpayer funds were wasted at will in extravagent Ministerial behaviour and ill-considered projects  like the International Airport at Mattala. At the time of the fall of the regime in 2015 the country had been rendered almost broke.

Finally, the above considerations point to the fact that the discipline in Gota’s reign was meant to apply only to the millions of powerless  people. The few hundreds who were under the susnhine of the controlling elite were safe with their indiscipline. The prominent illustration had been at Rathupaswela where farmers had genuinely protested against the pollution of their underground water systems. They were shot by soldiers who belonged to the Defense Ministry. The previous shooting and killing at the garment factory premises in Katunayake was similar.

Where, then, was Freedom?

Where then was freedom under Gota’s discipline? For the millions of powerless, freedom was not there since the population was living with a Damocles sword over their heads. That sword could be exercised at local level by the corrupt elite of Pradeshiya Sabhas who had won recognition from the top;it reached up to the highest supremo levels at varying degrees of intensity. The simple explanation is that Gota’s discipline wasn’t an objective phenomenon but one that had been applied subjectively. The discipline itself was indisciplined. Such a discipline cannot bring forth freedom.

    Dear Shaymon,
I’d like to add a bit more info for the ‘Sorry Lankan’ population with a very sort memory, an example just to confirm my acceptance of your thoughts.

“The simple explanation is that Gota’s discipline wasn’t an objective phenomenon but one that had been applied subjectively. The discipline itself was indisciplined. Such a discipline cannot bring forth freedom
“Where then was freedom under Gota’s discipline? “

For the millions of powerless, freedom was not there since the population was living with a Damocles sword over their heads. That sword could be exercised at local level by the corrupt elite of ‘Pradeshiya Sabhas’ who had won recognition from the top.”

‘Khuram Shaikh Zaman, age 32, was a Red Cross worker from Milnrow, in Greater Manchester.[2] He had been fitting prosthetic limbs in Gaza in the previous months and was on holiday in Sri Lanka with his 23 year old Russian girl friend, Victoria Alexandrovna, hoping to spend Christmas and New Year in the island. They were staying at a resort in Tangalle, which was owned by Sampath Chandra Pushpa Vidanapathirana, a local council leader and political ally of the then president Mahinda Rajapakse’.[1][3]

    [Trial and Conviction Wikipedia]

‘The trial of the guilty stalled due to the political alliance Sampath Vidanapathirana had with the president. But under intense diplomatic pressure by the UK government Sampath Vidanapathirana was jailed for 20 years for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, along with three other men in July 2014 almost two years after the crime.'[4]
(Lahiru Kelum, U. Sama Deshapriya and Praneeth Chathuranga who were convicted of Mr Shaikh’s killing with the former council leader were all also found guilty of raping a woman)

What kind of disipline Gotler may have ?.
      .
Followings will guide you more please go one by one
      .
      1. The future leader we the nation expect today must not be a man of Philipines’s Duterte. For him anyone who is found with drugs, be them consumers or traffickers, were brutally gunned down to the very same manner, Gotlers rigorous orders took the lives of 23 unarmed prisoners in recent histroy..
      :
      2. He is one of the SENIOR men in LANKEN Army at the time Golter left the country seeking for greener pastures for his family. To that time, war was at its heights. General fonseka too could leave for the US consdering his offsprings already lived there, but he remained. Ironically, the manner who left the country for selfish gains, were godded, placing him above the ALTAR on his return, WHILE the man who sacrificed his sweat to the end defeating the terror within country was put in jail not just for few days but for 3 years. He was treated with all inhuman ways. The reasoning behind was, to have stood against mighty rascal Rajapkahse doctrine.
      .
      3. With his direct involvment, journos were killed, but nothing seem to have reached the final stage of investigations, but there are en ough prima faice evidence being collected sofar – such a man to be OUR further leader ? This can be the reality if LANKENS are fed with KIRIMATI or made permanent blind and deaf by LOCAL media.
Media today are scared of Rajapakshes, you may find it by yourself, whenever JOURNOS question/interview – the manner they get on with Rajapakshes and their supporters, and the difference the very same Journos get on and pose the questions to ruling party politicians or even JVPrs.

One cannot Discipline Others, before Disciplining Oneself First!
How can a Man who has Dual Citizenship, Aspire to Become the President of Sri Lanka?
Others have lost their Political Posts, because they were Citizens of another Country, too!

Be it on the road, in a temple, in a bus, in a supermarket, in airport or in schools they dont behave like animals. I dont think this nature was the case in 80ties.

Why do the great-talents always resort to visuals? …………..I am watching good ol’ Adolf’s rallies with the rallies of good ol’ Donald

You may be right: No words can describe their stupidities but pictures
        .,.
It is by the way the lanken style – the very same people and the STATE see things upside down

The army commander who led the war to the end was imprisoned for 3 years. Not even normal conditions were safeguarded to him as a prisoner – his photos of wearing a jumper were displayed by state and pvt TV channels on the command of Rajapashe TINPOT leaders, while the man who is said to have left the country for his own gains, to the US and spent their until 2005, was held as the HERO ? How come ?
        .
The leader appointed to STAND against former leaders and their high crimes, became their pet officially since 26 Oct 2018. Sirisena the incumbent president shamelessly betrayed over 6.2 mio of voters and their DECENCY just because he thinks and works for his extension. He has the audcity to do so , as if nudity is respected by him.

Supreme court gave the COURT VERDICT on unconstitutional dissolution of the parliament -with not a single judge stood pro president – nevertheless, he yet continues his office – even make PREPOSTEROUS statements one behind the other. Same audience is listening to him – his men like SB DISANAYAKA whose blatant acts tremoured the nation having worked for purchase of OPPOSITION MPs to complete parlamentary simple majority for the proof of FAKE primiership of MR beahve even worst. The society and MEDIA dont give damn to stand against.
        :
Nothing like HIGHER PUNISHMENTS agains tthose who destroyed parliament on the 14 Nov 2018. Entire world has been watching …… for some reasons, punishments fail…… if this would have been in SINGAPORE, all those MPs would have been subjected to EXECUTIONs, or beheading to a manner fish mongers do the job.

          People focus only on Fonseka

They should also tell what the great patriots the Rajapakses did to General Janaka Perera ……. in a despicable spiteful act of revenge they withdrew his security and he got blown to bits in Anuradhapura.

Janaka Perera was the man who saved Jaffna.

These are people who were in the battlefield their entire career ……….. unlike Gota hiding in the USA.

People also should talk about how the great common-man lover Mahinda pardoned Minister Milroy Fernando’s (I think that’s the correct name ……… btw no relation :)) ) wife who murdered and burned his mistress with the help of some army deserters …….but where is the justice for the poor servant girl who got killed and burned as well? She was working in the house just to eke out a living ………. they don’t come any commoner than that.

All these scum are just actors who fool the stupid people their entire life. They serve no other useful purpose ………….

If Gotler to be held as the future PE candidate, why not Dr Makandure Madush ?
      .
Dont you guys feel, that both have much in common ?
      .
Makandure madhush and his abusive underground networks killed innocient people in this country.
      :
Gotabaya Rajapakshe and his underground networks also took the lives of innocient people.
      :
During the high days of RAJAPAKSHE brutal adminsitration, recalling the KAHAWATTA village slaughters – one behind the other, until over 20 women or more were gunned down by underground men worked with regional police. To that time, for some reason, GOTABAYA Rajapakshe never took these killing waves that serious.
      :

What about Rathupaswala, katunayaka, Walikada, Jouarnlist killings and abductions, all after the CIVIL war is no longer there ….. all together over 100 or more have been killed plus injured by GOTABAYA Rajapakshe under ground KILLING squads.

All together, GOTLERs mediation should have killed lot more than that of Makundure Maduhs et al. Right ? Why the obsequeous people benult the Rajapakshe yet today ? Is that not because that they know nothing about the darkness of the devil ?.

The whole world was dismayed over killing of Briton Khuram Shaikh (from Rochdale constituency) in Tangalle. Our then GoSL was nonchalant. The then Rochdale MP, Simon Danczuk, visited Colombo twice but was cold-shouldered.
The November 2013 CHOGM was hosted by Colombo. The intervention of the then PM of Britain, David Cameron, Prince Charles and other heavy weights which brought about the convictions.

As Shyamon says, Gota’s brand of discipline will be applied only to the citizens, i.e. his ‘subjects’. Others in the ruling clique and their supporters will be free to engage in any kind of indiscipline and enjoy legal immunity from prosecution and punishment. The police will not even inquire into any complaints about them or file charges against them. It will be a highly discriminatory kind of ‘Discipline’!

We all know that GR cannot shed his militaristic attitude in a hurry. One may try to compare his statements with that of Zia Ul Haq of Pakistan. All are the same. In military you have to “YES SIR”. That’s it. No discussions. The Boss is always right and infallible. But I think Shyamon is in a better position to explain to the readers how things in his adopted land operate according to the rule of law. How is it that despots and megalomaniacs have not crept into the political system of that country. (We think so but we don’t know.). What foundations in society and its institutions that has stood the test of time. How is it that by and large the political system and its machinery are corrupt free? Is it that due to Australians valuing their time tested system, rejected the proposal of converting it into a republic in a referendum? There are a whole host of lessons that he can enlighten us and usefully devote his time and writing ability to the benefit of us in terms of education as opposed to analysing and dissecting yet another humbug who should be placed in a spitoon.

What the heck, Shimon? This is clearly not enough standard to earn the ‘doyen’ of Sri Lankan English writer status. It is too plain and unsophisticated in word choice, sentence structure and general composition.

We need to wait for Sarath de Alwis’ article on the same topic that will, no doubt, come within the next few days.

Even the Lansi Legend might come up with something on the failed state to contest this.

But he has runs on the Board.

Gota’s Strategy eliminated the world’s biggest Terrorist Organization which destroyed a once peaceful country and flooded the West with Terrorist Cadres and Terrorist supporters. as Refugees.

Gota ‘s strategy brought the Economy back to one of the fastest growing in that part of the World with in 3 years of finishing off the Terrorists.

Gota made Colombo one of the most desirable places live.

And he is now surrounded by not just OL leavers but the best of the best in all Professions in Srilanka, urging him to rescue the Nation yet again from the current abysmal situation where the Government can’t even pay the Installments to Lenders,
    Underworld is in full flight.

True this island was once peaceful before the arrival of Kallathonies from North South India. Kallthonies came in all shapes and sizes.

Cholas, Pandyas, Seras, Erivirar (mercenaries Vellaikkarar), Kalinga Maha, Portuguese, Dutch, Brits, Kalingu, Telingu, Kannadi, Urumisi (Ormuz),Kongana, Doluvara, Vaddakkara, Mukkara, Patandi, Kavisi (Malay – Gota’s great grandparents- Sakai people), Kabisi, Arabi, Isbasi, Javaka, Seena, Parasi (Persian) Kavisikanu, Javibenkalo, Marimeru, Kaberi, ….. ..(Source: Sinhalese War Poems and the Portuguese by Rohini Paranavitana)
      – came, grabbed lands, converted themselves from …. to Sinhala/Buddhism (the biggest fascist Cult, which periodically sacrificed human, in 1956, 1958, 1971, 1983, 1987/91, .. and over 30 years. ………….. approved by their high priests, … ) …………

By the way those terrorists kicked the IPKF out of the island while the patriotic ranavirus were hiding behind VP’s fat bum. And the crooks like you made money out of misery in the name of fighting “world’s biggest Terrorist Organization”. One has to hype one’s enemy to justify spending more money on unwanted, unnecessary, … war material and hardware, which pay the crooks more commission.

You need some fake hero like Gota if you want to stay in commission business.

These words “Discipline and Freedom” have become a “PANACEA” in the political arena now a days. Every “Crook” and “Bastard” uses it to capture power using the urgent need to have a “Discipline” and “Freedom”. The biggest problem before the country and its people is how to GET RID of these “PSEUDO” disciplined and freedom lovers who are struggling to capture power. I manage to recollect the actions taken by the British War Cabinet of Churchill- the then PM., after the demise of Hitler of Germany. In November 1943, Churchill addressed a note to the Cabinet and said; To declare, German Leaders, associated with Hitler as ” World Outlaws” and the number would be around 50-100. He said : They would benefit from nothing more than a brief kangaroo court at which their identity would be verified. Once identified, in Churchill’s words , ” to be shot to death”, without reference to higher authority. This blunt procedure , Churchill hoped would avoid the tangle of legal procedures. Even this idea of Churchill was supported by Lord Chancellor, Lord Simon – the British Government’s senior adviser on legal Affairs. A similar course of ACTION would have been taken immediately after the January 9th 2015. All these “CRIMINALS” who were associated with MR should have been termed “Sri Lanka Outlaws” and brought before “Special Courts” set up (to avoid all those tangles of Legal Procedures) to try all of them (irrespective of where they were hiding) and “HERD” them to Jail for life and RECOUP all that STOLEN property belonging to the country and people. As in the words of Churchill, our “Sri Lanka Outlaws” would also be within the numbers of 50 to 100. If that timely ACTION was taken, we would by now definitely have a well “Disciplined” and “Freedom Lovers” in real sense of those words to rule this country and reinstate our lost prestige.

Gotabhaya Rajapakse is true. He is trying to Army discipline into the country. See the parliament. All 225 lies. Otherwise, Money Launderers, Drug Addicts, financial Fraqudsrs and all kinds of Criminal are in the parliament. Both parties pretend they do not know anything. What is Ranil’s reputation when his new cabinet has five drug Addicts, aKiller and the same old bond Scammers. I am not saying Mahinda Rajapakse’s Pohottuwa or SLPP are saints. They will do the same thing in the open, lie in the parliament and lie in political meetings. Newpapers will not dare to publish those things. One thing is Interest free loans which they will not pay I suppose, Free Laptops. Mangala Samraweerwa gives Rs 120 million govt loans to media as camaras, photographic equipment and everything else probably to publish the on coming Arab Spring against MS. YOU TALK ISSUES AND NOT THE PROBLEM OR THE SYSTEM. GOTABAHAYA RAJAPAKSE WON’T BE ABLE TO IMPLEMENT THE DISCIPLINE BECAUSE IF HE COMES OTHER RAJAPAKSES TAKE OVER EVERYTHING. HE KNOWS THAT. IT IS LIKE RANIL. HE TALKS BUT THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY AND NGOS RUN THE SYSTEMS.

Gotta, oya harima hari. Despite your killing spree and the horrible foul mouth and a total lack of humanity yet to rule Dhamma Deepa we need a ruthless killer like you. Only your message will get into our morons heads. Once you are in the throne you must have a white van for each district under your command and pick up the buggers left and right for a while and things will be fine in Paradise. Do you know how Praba Thamby ruled Tamil Desham? Same tactic and everything was spick and span. All law abiding people were safe, women were safe, no kudu, no Kerala ganja and no Ava Chandiyas. Dhamma Deepa has reached a stage where nothing else is going to work. How many Sinhalyas can seek asylum now in other countries. Buddha in fact sanctioned killing of enemies so go ahead. For a sensible and civilised society , Freedom and discipline will go hand in hand like in Singapore. Sri Lanka is not in the same league . When GR was the Defence Secretary, freedom of speech was supressed with extreme sort of punishments – death like in the case of Lasanta, Tarraki and others. This is not discipline.

    Shaymon,

Gotha is nt going to be a candidate for President. He is a CRIMINAL and is wanted by the USA for fraud and on other charges. For his bad luck his application to renounce his American Citizenship to qualify to stnd in the election 1) is not going to be processed in time . 2) Renouncing Citizenship is not the same as giving up Green Card( equivalent to ILR)
Permanent residents continue to remain the citizen of another country. So every time you travel outside the United States, you must carry the passport of that country as well as your green card. You will use your green card to reenter the United States.Contrary to popular myth, you can abandon your residence in as little as one day.
But giving up Citizenship is not that easy. At the moment he is on the watch list and eeverthing depends on the fate of his Cousin who is being prosecuted and what he spills.. Whether he vomits or regurgitates.
Gotha is not out of the woods . His fate hangs in the balance and he will be called back to face justice including murdering Lasantha and many others.

Recently Gotabaya charged Ranil Wickremesinghe that he had betrayed the brave soldiers by admitting that both the army and LTTE committed war crimes. RW further claimed that both sides should forget and forgive each other.

Like Gotabaya, his elder brother Mahinda Rajapaksa also claims that the army committed no crimes. In fact, they fought the war with a book on rules of war in one hand and the other holding the gun. He also claimed that there were zero civilian casualties. If all these tall claims are true why not hold a hybrid court to investigate the truth or otherwise of the charge of war crimes. Why is the government reluctant to allow a hybrid court.

The crimes committed by the Sri Lankan armed forces have been well-documented thanks to the soldiers who took photographs and passed on the human rights activists sometimes free and sometimes for a fee.

It was Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka who confessed that the army did not fight the LTTE according to the rules of war.

On May 18, 2009, over 300 LTTE cadres surrendered led by Balasingham Nadesan, Head of the Political Department, his Deputy Seevaratnam Pulithevan and Col. Ramesh of the Peace Secretariat. On May 14 Nadesan contacted the United Nations, the governments of Norway, United Kingdom, United States and also ICRC and had been assured by Mahinda Rajapaksa and told to surrender at a particular place by the Basil Rajapakse. LTTE’s request for a third party witness to oversee the surrender was not granted. They surrendered to the 58 Division (Sri Lanka) carrying White flags and were reportedly shot dead. Sarath Fonseka and the then Sri Lankan Army Chief said that they had been shot dead on the orders of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to Shavendra Silva Commander of the 58 Division (Sri Lanka).

Balachandran Prabhakaran the son of LTTE Chief was also killed after surrendering along with his bodyguards. UN Panel states the LTTE leaders intended to surrender. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Flag_incident)

On the same day at Vadduvaakal over 110-second rung, LTTE cadres surrendered to the army. They were taken in CTB buses in the presence of their spouses and relatives for a short inquiry, but they never returned after that ‘short’ inquiry. Among those who surrendered were Poet Ratnathurai, Elilan, Yogi, Balakumar and Thilakar. See https://www.colombotelegraph.com/index.php/mr-president-what-happened-to-the-ltte-cadres-who-surrendered-to-the-army-at-vadduvakal-on-may-18-2009/ for a partial list.

Thanks to some soldiers, photographs appeared in the media showing the mutilated bodies of B.Nadeasan, Pulithevan and Col. Ramesh with burnt marks all over their bodies. A photograph appeared in the media showing Balakumar with his son seated on a bench inside an army camp.

Likewise, Balachandran, son of LTTE leader Prabhakaran who surrendered with his bodyguards was also shot dead. A photograph showed the 12-year-old kid seated on a bench inside an army bunker munching some short- eats oblivious of the imminent death lurking around him. Later, the bullet-ridden body of Balachchandran was seen thrown to the ground.

Will Gotabaya please tell us why these surrenders were killed and who gave the orders to shoot?

Tamils are pointing the finger at Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who for all intents and purposes the de facto Defence Minister throughout the war from November 2005. Incidentally, it was Sirisena who was acting Defence Minister in the absence of Mahinda Rajapaksa who has gone abroad. So President is also a suspect in this heinous crime.

Although these people are only a small fraction of the people disappeared in Sri Lanka, this event was extraordinary by the number of people disappeared in one location and in a very brief period: approximately 500 people were disappeared in only three days. These people disappeared not in the fog of war, but after being taken into custody by the Srilankan Army and the Government of Sri Lanka. The names of the military divisions and their commanders—some promoted and many still serving in the army—have been known for many years. Almost a decade on, it is time for those military commanders to provide information to the families about the fate of their loved ones.
