Periyar is an honorofic meaning great. It was conferred on him by his doting acolytes in TamilNadu. Ramaswamy Naicker (1879 – 1973) was born into a Kannada family living in Erode when Karnataka, Andhra, subsequently created Kerala, recently carved out Telengana and TamilNadu together composed the Madras Presidency previously. His formal education was up to Grade 5 and he was married at an early age. He was said to speak Kannadam and Telugu.
Tamil was Mleccha Bhasha to Periyar
Tendentious reports say that he was proficient in Tamil. With what degree of scholarship? Perhaps sufficient enough to call Tamil a primitive language. Not satisfied with such a canard, he went further to deride Tamil as a mleccha Bhasha. The adjective had barbaric overtones. Swami Vivekananda who above all was a very great scholar has said, the degeneracy of India came when the word mleccha was coined. The reason he attributed being the aspersions it cast on non-Indians and the degree to which such imputations hurt their sensitivities. May be Periyar too much elated by the accolade, was not mindful of refined discourse.
Denigrating Thirukkural
The public media has it that Periyar was eulogistic about Thirukkural. The readership is too discreet and discriminating to swallow such fabrications. What did he really say? Thirukkural is no different from excrement placed on a silver platter. If this assertion is erudition, what is stupidity? Bharathy said if there be classy erudition, foreigners must pay obeisance to it. Dr. G.U. Pope from Oxford has extended his reverence by translating the work with a worthwhile Introduction in English. Prime Minister of India Modi, has placed a target of translating Thirukkural into 100 languages. TamilNadu has conveyed her thanks for the munificence of the poet in gifting 1330 stanzas in 133 chapters, with a lofty granite statue 133 feet tall in Kanniya Kumari.
The touchstone of a person’s greatness or pettiness is one’s actions. – Thirukkural
When viewed through this critical prism, does one see greatness in this counterfeit personage, miscalled Periyar? Was he born great? No evidence. Did he achieve greatness? Never acclaimed. In reality the Tamil word Periyar (The Great) is a misnomer. To conceal fake greatness, the title was unwittingly thrust upon him. Subramania Bharathy in his inimitable poetic style said “If the heart is truly illumined, words springing therefrom will emit a sparkle”. Has the learned Tamil community seen an illumined heart or words of sparkle in this synthesized great?
Example of Fraudulence
Urge for damage control propels fabrication. The public media shed light on a concoction. “In 2021, the Madurai Bench of the Madurai High Court directed the State Government to remove a false information from school and college syllabus that claimed that the UNESCO had conferred the title “Socrates of South-East Asia” on Periyar. The culprit? U NO WHO.
“Criminal, Lunatic and Perverted Mind”- Nehru
An assessment of low report or high esteem can stem only from the learned, is another Tamil quote. Who can be better than Jawaharlal Nehru to talk about Ramaswamy Naicker. The world knows of Nehru’s high level of education, culture and refinement. Yet to Place the truth for all to know, he did not desist from using such words as ”Criminal, Lunatic and Perverted Mind” to describe Periyar. What was the occasion? EVR Had given a call for 1,000 Tamil Brahmins to be killed. What for? To eradicate caste.
How was Periyar Different from Authentic Stalin
To ensure peace in Europe, the victors of WWII met at the Yalta Conference in1945. There Stalin called for the shooting of 50,000 German officers, who were POWs, Geneva Convention notwithstanding. Churchill to show his abhorrence walked out of the meeting. How was Periyar different from Stalin in his proclivity to blood-letting?
Nehru, in a communication dated October 23, 1957 addressed to Kamaraj Nadar sent along with a press cutting, in which EVR is supposed to have called upon his followers to kill brahmins and set fire to their houses.

In a subsequent communication to Kamaraj Nadar dated November 5, 1957 Nehru wrote as follows. I find that EVR is going on saying the same thing again and calling upon people at the right time to start stabbing and killing. What he utters can only be said by a criminal or a lunatic…Let him be put in a lunatic asylum and his perverted mind treated there…The law is often very foolish but it is not so foolish as to permit a campaign of incitement to murder”.

Tagore and Mahatma
Rabindranath Tagore, an acknowledged great of India and the world, called Gandhi a Mahatma. The appellation which has lasted ever since will live till eternity. Who called EVR, Periyar? His retinue of Tamil votaries. What reverence did Periyar accord to the Tamil language? He treated it as a Milecha language, undeveloped and uncouth, not to be spoken in polite circles. He however made a concession: the right to ’Reasonable Use of Tamil’ by upper class Tamil ladies for talking in Tamil to ‘Servants Only’.
Bharath is ancient and great with none to compare sang Bharathy. To a nation replete with greatness do we need more from the ‘Dravidian Model’?

Today’s news is that Canada has proof of the Indian government’s involvement in the murder of a Sikh Canadian. The man had been accused of being an advocate for Sikh separatism, and the Modi government is adopting the rogue playbook of countries like Saudi Arabia and Russia. It is the beginning of the end of Modi. India is a democratic country that has some global obligations, and Modi can’t get away as easily as MBS or Putin did.

But today AIDMK officially announced breaking up alliance with BJP, slamming Annamalai , alleging speaking ill of their former leaders. As Sivathasan wished, now the BJP is “free of Dravidian politics”. Lets see their performance in coming elections. In Kerala, even after spending crores and putting unlimited manpower to work, BJP gained less votes than previous elections, in a constituent which became vacant after death of Oman .C, previous CM, and Congress leader.

Recently India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Seetharaman said that she witnessed when Periyar garlanded Ram and went on a procession. But she said that Hindus will not meet violence with violence when she spoke on the subject of Sanatana Dharma. Moreover, in what context of the situation Ram wanted Sita to enter a burning fire. Ram knew that Sita was genuine and Sita also wanted to perform it by entering a burning fire to demonstrate her genuiness to the public. How come that as a Canadian citizen, you have nothing to say about India’s flouting of your country’s sovereignty to attack a fellow citizen, however unsavory a character he may have been to India? Indians liberally call people names like ‘Khalistani’ or ‘terrorist’ based simply on rumor and innuendo. There is no evidence the guy has violated any Canadian laws, and Canada cannot suppress free speech if someone supports separatism. Even if he did something in India, there are proper channels to ensure justice. By resorting to assassinations, India has joined the pantheon of rogue nations.
I don’t think you and many so-called Indian analysts understand the gravity of what India has done, and how seismic it is in changing international perceptions about India.
India may eventually find that its access to Western markets will be curtailed. They can say goodbye to any claim for a permanent seat at the UN Security Council as long as Modi is in power. I have always personally campaigned against it given India’s perfidy vis-a-vis SL Tamils, but now I won’t have to make any effort. No longer will there be any faith in Modi’s pragmatism. But as far as Hardeep Singh Nijjar was concerned, it is said there are credible information, but not still proved. Moreover US and Australia wanted India to lend support to Canada for cooperation. Other countries have not so far commented. In spite of all these problems, India has invited the US President for India’s Republic Day celebrations and he has accepted it. Moreover, there was another incident where Jamal Kashaoggi, a Saudi activist, was murdered in Turkey. There is some mystery over such killings. Justin Trudeau made this allegation after his departure from G20 Summit Conference in Delhi, when in fact this murder has taken place much earlier. Meanwhile India has been following righteousness especially in dealing with foreign affairs. India has denied such allegations vehemently. As such it is too early to make a comment.

While the leader of the Khalistan terrorist organization, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, was recently shot dead in Canada, one more terrorist, Sukhdul Singh, has also been shot dead. In this situation, a clash broke out today between the Khalistan terrorist groups held in the city of Winnipeg, Canada. In 2017, India’s NIA was looking for Sukhdul Singh, who had escaped to Canada and was absconding. Such deaths are common among the terrorists. Hardeep Singh Nijjar may also have belonged to one of the terrorist groups. It cannot be ruled out that rivalries between the terrorist groups may have led to the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar. It is better to wait until the RCMP discloses the outcome of these murders rather than relying on credible allegations. Even in the case of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case LTTE was responsible. But the rest of the countries, including the United States, are said to have refused. A similar decision in Britain over the poisoning of Russian Sergei Skripal and his daughter saw Russia retaliate by expelling more than 100 diplomats from allies including the US, Britain and Canada. But Russia had confirmed in 2018 that it had no role in the Sergei Skripal affair. Currently Canada’s allies are struggling to make a decision on the issue of India. Trudeau should have shared his allegations with others so that others can find out the truth. Canada and these other countries are part of ‘The Five Eyes’ intelligence sharing mechanism, so they already know. Canada didn’t want to embarrass Modi while the G7 summit was going on, so Trudeau took it up only privately with all these countries in Delhi and made it public once the summit was over.
U.S. officials have privately told reporters that Trudeau wouldn’t have gone public without strong evidence, just as Turkey’s Erdogan went public about MBS’ murder of Jamal Khashoggi. The claim that Periyar (not referred to as EVR in recent decades) called for the killing of Brahmins is mischief.
No Brahmin has even been assaulted by his followers.
“If you see a serpent and a Brahmin, kill the Brahmin first” is a saying of Marathi origin and was on display in an office of the DK. To interpret it literally is plain mischief.
The Brahmin elite and the Congress (Brahmin dominated for long and under Brahminist pressure even under Kamaraj) resented Periyar for asserting the rights of non-Brahmins.
(The biography of Periyar by SV Rajadurai and V Geetha, a Tamil Brahmin, gives a truer picture of the man than all gossip based interpretations.)
If Tamilnadu is the most secular state in India (perhaps alongside Kerala) even today Tamilnadu owes it to Periyar.
The BJP has hijacked the names of many leaders with a reputation for a secular outlook (including Vivekananda) but Periyar’s name is unassailable.

I do not want to challenge Swami Vivekananda, because it is only narrow-minded, pettiness. But when an intelligent talk comes out of EVR or SV, I treat both as enlightening rather than searching hard for things to throw back at them. Here, whenever we plant a jackfruit seed, a Strychnic plant never germinated, did it? The germinated plant, in time, started to turn out 1000 and 1000 jackfruit seeds, from which it emerged. What makes somebody think that anything merged is not for multiplication for what was planted? Aren’t the multiplied jackfruit seeds not replicas of the component we planted? Why say none of the planted components emerged. Isn’t it a convoluted, engineered rhetoric talk? Otherwise, how do you want the lakhs of jack fruit seed emerging there on the spot you planted one jackfruit seed? What Chandrikathasan did here was he tried to prove Pariyar was wrong, but he inadvertently proved Swami Vivekananda was not focused or object oriented. This is why I always say Chandrikathsan always misunderstands the pundits’ words.

I frequently wrote here a narration about the classes (Quality) of students “Kadai Manakar, Idai Manakar and Muthal Manakar. Kadai Manakar are Panadai (the fiber net cover comes with the palm trees’ flowers). Panadai is used as a filter for toddy. Panadai lets the sweet toddy pass through it (for human consumption) & retains for it only dead bugs and garbage that float in the toddy. A mythical bird called Annam (Similar to Swan) is cited as the metaphor for Muthal Manakar. These first-grade students know to separate from the Guru’s lecture what is good for them and what is unwanted. That talent is compared with Annam, which is said to be able to, when milk is offered mixed with water, drink the milk & leave the water behind. It is sometimes said that some Gurus purposefully mix water and milk and offer it to their disciples. After Annam has quenched its thirst for knowledge, if the remaining was only water, then the Guru passes the student saying he/she had achieved capacity to understand the world and lead his/her life successfully in the world where good and bad are intertwined. Pannadai looks for filth in the guru’s lesson and carries that in their whole life.

We agree with Avvai, but a nagging question is “did she suggest any idea on his happy day how to make that happiness last forever?” Probably in her days, that blessing was forever; but how worth it now, me to repeat it?
In Avvai’s time we raised the bulwarks; then we blocked the rivers and built the dams; then we crossed bred paddy plants; we altered plants’ DNA. Now we are teaching plants to do photosynthesis efficiently using light and water; seismic turn on agricultural – cultivational technology. We have moved in our efforts far away from Avvai’s easy proposal of raising the bulwark as a solution to preserve the happiness of the kingdom. But still 4B people on this earth are food insecure. We Tamils do not have a land to live and proudly call “it is our country”. That is not just our situation, but 1000 and 1000 every year sinking in Indian, Atlantic, Pacific oceans by trying to escape by worse seaworthy vessels than the Canadian SUNSEA”.

Chandirkathasan doesn’t want to explain what good SV’s great words can do in the life of a peasant, who are these days robbed, beaten, and tortured by tyrant rulers on one side while nature is devastating their lives on the other side.
SV elucidated what real Hinduism was. EVR taught the laymen the stupid, superstitious things that are stuck in their heads and how they were being used by opportunistic elites for their happiness and how miserable the laymen’s life is without them realizing it.
