England Wins World Cup For The First Time Defeating The Galant New Zealanders By No Runs

This World Cup finals played last Sunday at the Lords was a unique cricket match since there will never be another World Cup final with two ties.

If I say to begin by far this is the best cricket match I had ever witnessed. As a past cricketer and a cricket coach I say twice, the winner was cricket not either of the teams that played the match. It was unfortunate that the match was decided on a technical issue through the law books. My personal opinion is that neither sides deserved to lose since it was tied twice. Both teams played outstanding cricket. It should be noted at the last stage of New Zealand chasing the 241 runs to win, there were two brilliant run outs taken by the New Zealand fielders which is very difficult under tremendous pressure. Personally, I do not support a team but in this instance I became a supporter of the England team to win this World Cup as they were the best prepared team mentally and physically. I remember Mr Andrew Straus the director of cricket four years back initiated this England team’s preparation for the World Cup, which made me reasonably confident that England will win the championship. Since their preparation included to accustom to conditions and getting the ideal combination.

My assessment is that this match although technically won by England, New Zealand played better cricket. New Zealand would have still won, had that unfortunate overthrow by Martin Guptil which cost them 6 runs was prevented. But it was no fault of this brilliant fielder. The bowl sped to the boundary and England were awarded six runs, on TV I did not get a clear picture whether the ball hit Stokes before completing the second run. Incidentally, Guptil won the semi final for New Zealand versus India by running out Dhoni with a similar throw which hit the stumps. As for the match, I was very fortunate to have seen twenty two cricketers belonging to two nations displaying absolute desciplined cricket through out the match.

I only hope our young cricketers watched this game, had they seen they would have learned a lot of discipline to conduct themselves specially in a final match. If I may state few instances, at a crucial moment when Stokes hit a six over mid wicket the ball just flew over the fielders head and the fielder Boult, failed to hold on to the catch. When everyone was wondering whether it was a six or four runs, the fielder immediately signalled to the umpire indicating it was a six. What was displayed by Boult there was high class discipline that cricketers should have. The way the two captains lead their two respective teams was exemplary. For an instance captain Morgan entrusting the most important super over to Archer who is inexperienced with only fourteen Internationals before him was a remarkable move which won the match for England, because at a pressured situation where the World Cup depended on one over any bowler would have given more than 15 runs. That showed Morgan’s confidence placed on Archer.

I sincerely feel Archer will be an asset to the England team in the forthcoming Ashes series. Australians will have their hands full to cope against this unusual pace bowler. He’s an effortless fast bowler that you will not expect, that speed off the wicket which is easy action. We all remember the ball he got Maxwell out in the Australian match with a snorter of sorts. The ball reared at good length giving Maxwell no chance, so Australians will certainly have a tough time during the Ashes series against him. He will win many matches for England in the future.

At the post match interview I was surprised why Williamson did not mention the LBW decision of Ross Taylor, because whatever runs Taylor made thereafter had he been not out would have made New Zealand victorious. Williamson maintained a very cool head during the entire tournament which is a rarely seen in the field nowadays. Probably that was the reason for former England captain Nassar Hussein to mention that Williamson is a credit to the game of cricket. He will be long remembered for the way he lead his team to that position almost single handedly scoring in every match and showing what an astute leader he is and deservingly received the player of the tournament award. He is a great leader who leads from the front. He will take this New Zealand cricket team to greater heights in the future.

Finally, the most heartening sight at the end of this absolutely fabulous match was to witness all twenty two players hugging each other knowing clearly that neither team lost.

kumar dharmasena handed the the match to england by his wrong decision to give 6 runs instead of five
had he not done so NZ would have won
obviously he had not studied the icc rules regarding world cup matches
i am surprised the other umpire went along with him

      KD ‘s other cok-ups.
During the Chittagong Test, he gave 16 decisions. Out of those 16, 8 were overturned after the referral. Now, during the ongoing Mohali Test between India and England, Kumar had another nightmare encounter with DRS but this time being in the third umpire’s seat.Chris Woakes had bowled a delivery down the leg side. Parthiv Patel tried to tuck it to fine leg. The wicketkeeper held on to a catch and the English players appealed. On-field umpire Marais Erasmus gave it out Patel reviewed it straight away. Replays showed that the ball had not hit the bat but brushed the side of Patel’s jersey.
Dharmasena, the third umpire, made a blunder when he said on air, “Marais, no edge, you can stay with your original decision.” Luckily, though, Erasmus did not hear the second part of the sentence and overturned his decision. If he had heard Dharmasena’s call, he would have stayed with his original decision of out!

As a matter of fact, Virat Kohli said, unfortunately one side has to lose. That New Zealand was the loser was rather hurting. That they showed that Cricket is a game for the Gentlemen is to their credit.

the rules on winning the competition were available for all before the games started and the final was played within these laws and England were the right and proper winners of the World Cup according to the rules.

rules clearly showed that england has been given an extra run by hora umpire. However i don’t wish to take the cup from england. They deserve it,but so does NZ.Therefore i agree with murali that the cup should be shared. If i was the england captain i would have recommended it to the ICC.After all it is only a cup. Both sides never won it and if it is shared they both have fulfilled their dreams. They both deserve it for the greatest thrilla that has been witnessed in a world cup and the entertainment that it provided for the cricketing world.Thats all sports is -ENTERTAINMENT.

In the super over when the bowler bowled the wide ball the captain did not show any hesitant or anger he gave him good calm counselling this therapy picked up the energy once again to be careful, Some times mistake happens for advantage.
and the team match winning appreciation words was God is with as and God was with us.

What a pity New Zealand were deprived of a win and the world cup. I have noticed Dharamasena to be quite arrogant when umpiring. He clearly messesd up, being unaware of the rules.
He should be given a Sinhala translation of the ICC rule book which is in English.
Also Madugalle being the most senior match referee involved with this game should have intervened and corrected this grave mistake. But then again I suppose they dont want to be unpopular with the English authorities and lose their status and perks,

The world cup should have been shared by both england and NZ.No one will ever accept england having solely this world cup.Carrying it aloft will be like having a hot potato.Ihe ICC should correct the decision and announce that it is a shared victory between england and NZ.

      shankar,
I agree with you. The world cup should have been shared by both countries. The premier league football find the winner through the points system after number of games played between many teams. England was not in the overall ranking. Unfortunately, there were lot of issues came across during the cricket world cup. Some countries were disadvanatged by rain. For England had the opportunity to play all the games whereas it was denied to some countries.

The Match Officials: Marais Erasmus, Handunnettige Dharmasena, Rodney Tucker, Aleem Dar, Ranjan Madugalle
    Two Lankans! Trusted for impartiality.
    .
We need impartial SLC. Possible only if politicians kept off.

Yes. Kumar Dharmasena made a mistake.
What about the Leg Umpire, the 03rd Umpire, Match Referee, Pundits and Legends in the Commentary Team, the ICC officials present, did they not know the rule to rectify the mistake immediately through the 3rd Umpire????????? OR nobody knew the Rule?

Unlike a tie in football where there is a penalty shootout.
In Cricket, its about the number of runs being scored and not the number of boundaries.
A team may have less boundaries, nevertheless its not boundaries, its about the number of runs scored and no matter HOW.
ICC must accept and announce the end result as Joint Champions.
Award the Trophy accordingly to Joint Winners.

Where are the Gentlemen of cricket? Are there any or just greed?
Number of Boundaries can not decide Loosers.

i wonder whether this cock up occurred because of sirisena. Was he somewhere there secretly.Did sirisena give cricketing advice from his pollonnaruwa soft ball days to dharmasena.Sirisena and dharmesena, both sena’s are names that are doomed for cockup’s.Sena and guttika 1st cockup.

ps.a PSC should be established by ranil to inquire into his movements or tel calls at that time.
