Expose: Media Heads To Bow; Rajapaksa Gives 547 Journos Interest Free Car Loans

The Media Minister’s leaked files now in possession of the Colombo Telegraph show that the Rajapaksa regime has granted 547 journalists and media workers a Rs. 1,200,000/- of interest free government loans from a state bank to purchase car or van, where the interest will be paid by the Treasury using tax payer money.

Irida Lankadeepa Editor Ariyananda Dombagahawatte receives papers for the car loan from President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on Saturday. Mass Media and Information Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa and Mass Media and Information Ministry Secretary Charitha Herath were also present. Journalists from virtually every mainstream media in the country with the exception of the Sunday Times newspaper have accepted laptops and car loans or both from the Rajapaksa regime.

Editors who received both a free laptop and the interest free loan are;  Ariyananda Dombagahawatta, NM Cassim, Gamini Sumanasekara, Narada Nissanka, Thushara Gunaratne , Sisira Paranatanthri, Mohan Lal Piyadasa, Dinesh Weerawansa, Bennet Rupasinghe, Indrani Pieris, Daya Lankapura, Mahinda Abesundara and Sundara Nihathamani De Mel.

Ravaya features editor Wimalanath Weeraratna, Divaina News Keerthi Warnakulasooriya and Neth FM Kulasiri Kariyawasam also received a free laptop and the interest free loan.

Members of the Free Media Movement, CJ Amaratunga, Ariyananda Dombagahawatta, C. Dodawatta, Bennet Rupasinghe and Daya Lankapura  and the president of the Muslim Media Forum NM Ameen also applied and were received the interest free loan.

After a series of exposures by the Colombo Telegraph about the serious conflict of interest issues and violations of standard journalistic ethics, the BBC World Service ruiled that some of its Sinhala Section journalists have breached journalistic ethics and violated BBC’s code of conduct by applying for interest free vehicle loans offered by the Sri Lankan Government. The BBC has also stated that the staff in breach of the code would be sent for retraining.

But the BBC journalists who were granted the loan never withdrew their applications, the Colombo Telegraph learns. “They can go to the recommended bank and get the loan anytime” secretary to the Media Ministry Charitha Herath told Colombo Telegraph.

Last month Colombo Telegraph exposed the full lists of the journalists who received a free laptop from the regime. Today we are able to publish the list of media bosses who applied and were received the interest free loan. We will soon be able to publish all the names of the journalists who received the interest free loan.

      This is bribery.

They will not have to pay it back as long as they do not say something bad.

What a racket. Nepotism extended to a larger circle.

There is a cost as the bank gets paid the interest by the taxpayer. The government is raiding the Treasury to favour their popularity which our Electoral Commission should look at but no chance as they are also political appointees. This government has been flouting the convention of Segregation of Powers for years and they think we don’t notice. They have removed Judges and Chief Justices at whim when they refuse to turn a blind eye to their irregularities and installed judges who do. They have closed down newspapers or bought them at taxpayers expense or shut down broadcasters or blocked the web sites (of CT as alleged) when they don’t approve of what they say. A free press or media is something we should all cherish. Often they are biased one way or other, but it is up to you to support or argue against what’s been said. Shutting them down is the action of a corrupt government.

These are unquestionably the bribes to make these people subservient to MR and his despicable rule. These journalists should the feeling of shame and guilt in accepting them .There is no independence and integrity and standard of ethics one could expect from these so-called journalists. In the context of abuse and misuse of tax payer’s money by MR for his personal and family interests the independence and intergirty would depends on the ones capacity to withstand the overtures exerted by the despotic regime. The despotic regimems use bribes to win morally and inegrity-wise ones and for strong ones by the use of its ruthless suppressive machinery.

why none of the journalists raise the question – why the bugger repeatedly offer this kind of perks to the journalists ? is that also not the honesty of those journalists – at least one single to raise the voice ?
What is lacking there is honesty among the many ? Both sides, president the bugger and the journalists are abusers.

The Rajapakse govt; is bribing the media to stay in power for ever. The power will be in the Rajapakse SAMAGAMA FOR A LONG, LONG TIME . IT IS A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS FOR SRI LANKA. Of course this might lead to an internal revolution someday .

I have no doubt, if Prabakaran and others were like, they would have also been offered cars and laptops to them.

These typical rascal minded settings to keep them quiet.

Whose money is being paid for all these offers ? Apparently [Edited out] and his regime has fully forgotten that the numbers of masses that voted them into power have today been struggling for their 3 meals.

Ane ane, ratakata giya kala. It is literally like bad soldiers are given weapons to fight. This is the MR vision and wisdom :(

Yes, iratai. It is a loan given
only to the favoured few. You
ask for one and see whether you
    will get it.

    Thushara Gunaratne (Editor,
Mawbina) has got one for his
father who is over 85 years. Asked
by one journalist, he said it was
to buy a car to take his father
    to the hospital.

Thank you CT-what will we do without you?

When The Loan was given to a Muslim Journo ,the entire Muslim community was not spared in slurring insults by the bigots ,

But now it is given to people of their community ,suddenly it becomes very ethical- tell me what kind of people are some of you Sinhalese ? ,how can you keep thinking and behaving this way ,I am aware your faith does not require you any obligation by commandment where conscience is concerned ,but as a human being how can you do it?

As long as your people benefit, even illegal becomes legal ,unethical becomes ethical- OMG what a place to be stuck with no choice to get out ,and what stupidity for people who threw away abodes of peace blessed with and had come back and have no choice to reverse it and then the people who are extremely blessed by being able to get out and have been blessed with so much of dignity ,freedom and a peaceful night sleep ,not having to worry which moment like in Myanmar or like in 1983 not black July rather better to be known as the genocide of JR, your own neighbor may come in and kill you?to imagine we in Muslims in Sri lanka are living in luxary ?
This may become the reality of future Sri Lanka for MUSLIMS as long as BBS ,Ravaya,Jhu and like -if not limited to their Temples and pin bath am being honest ,
But can His Excellency handle that? when The BBs has openly stated they will not permit muclticultralism ? or Will The Government media spokesman ahve another litte story to tell us about the boogey man ?
    Only time will tel.

Yes – Muslim council made a statement against the attack on a Christian church by the “so called monks.” (I do not think monks who follow Buddha would do that.) What the did CT was to highlight the fact that Ameen took a loan from the President’s fund and divert the attention of the readers from the attack on the church and also to play down the fact that Muslim Council made a statement. Most of the comments are about Ameen taking the loan and not about the contents of that statement. If you read the statement, it is requesting the authorities to take action against those who commit these crimes.

If they did not make these concessions, how much of funds the authorities could have saved – and with that funds how many of the poor people in remote corners of the nation could be given a life ?

Now they deliberately have put the opening of highy way from Galle to Matara – focusing the great advantage they can gain opening it shortly before the southern p elections. That is the trick being played by rulers. That can then work as an eyewash – affecting even the blind becoming overwelmed…. the aftermath of the overwelm will be stick to them until the elections are over…. in other word,… like giving some drugs to hallozinate the usually vulerable folks int ahtway. Else, this was earlier supposed to open at the end of January 2014 as they reported it a month ago. As we know our people they clearly forget everything if they would see a road opening is the case. Like appeasing them after a cold drink…. they are so gawky and gullible …. long term effect is always forgotten by them… that was the case with farming community in rajarata that is proved to have loosing their kidneys today. It is all because of the poisonous fertilizer that they got introduced by agro ministry.

And the other point, Just to feed those who can afford a life but only for petty advantages is really shameless, that is what i felt reading about journo concessions for cars and laptops And if this came from MR himself .. it is more than shameless. People should realize this clearly – else nothing would work to the change that they expect to happen soon.

Sri Lanka is what Sri Lanka is. This reflects the low standard of journalistic practices in Sri lanka.

I am sure the journos above named do not have any idea what conflict of interest is.

CT does not give the repayment period of the loans. There must be circular authorizing this interest free loan issued by the Treasury to this effect. If CT also brings out this circular, it would open way for lower salaried government employees to cite this circular and demand at least to wave off interest payment on their distress loans they took from the Government.

Be rational and positive at all times. Why do we have to find fault and hidden motives in everything the regime does? Fortunately I still have faith in most of these journalists – this can help in their work!

And it’s not unfair! Look how important the traditional media is! The quality of journalism in Sri Lanka will surely jump sky high…

Don’t prejudge the innocent journalists – most of them are not brainwashed – they have the right to write what they want. The unbiased ones can be easily distinguished from the biased ones: but aren’t we also biased when it comes to giving our opinions?

If this is the first time such a mass-scale activity that does not fall
within reasons, should not an NGO approach Courts in a Public Interest
case – at least to give it the widest publicity so that Votes who follow
the media can judge. Mohan P will also be given a chance to reveal his
hidden animosity. Surely this can be raised in Parliament as no other
than the Chairman of the Commonwealth is resorting to bribing a sector?

My humble request is for CT or other readers of this column to give us the names of PROMINENT journalists who have not taken these bribes. Also it would be interesting to find out names of newspapers/ tv stations whose staff has not taken these bribes.

Thia speaks much for the dependence of the media and controlling of the media by the government. By the way, have you noticed that there were a handful of Tamil journalists who applied for this loan.

I was offered telephone line and house by the government. But I refused since first and foremahead of the queue and a house but I refused since I did not want to compromise my values and strove be a journalist with integrity.

Pardon me if I sound sanctimonious. I never sell my soul for materialistic dividends.

If just journalism is to work journalists should conduct themselves with honesty and decorum.

These shameful journos have compromised their integrity and neutrality, by accepting these bribes.
Any government in the world that has to present goodies to the media, has ulterior motive, and simply not heard of. Yet another devious scheme by Rajapaksa and company, to make sure their crimes are downplayed.
Shame on those who sold their souls.
