President Maithripala Sirisena appointed his son-in-law Thilina Suranjith as a Public Relations Officer of the Defense Ministry, highly placed political sources said.

Suranjith is the husband of Chathurika Sirisena, the elder daughter of President Sirisena. He was an active member of the Presidential Election campaign team of Maithripala Sirisena.

Meanwhile, Rakhitha Rajapaksha, son of Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapaksha, has been appointed as Media Secretary of the Ministry.

These appointments are contrary to a key point in his campaign against Mahinda Rajapaksa government since Sirisena continuously accused Rajapaksa of ‘family rule.’

The son-in-law of the President worked hard during the Election campaign. So did Rakitha Rajapakse… and I was a witness to that. Had MR won, these two kids would have been seriously victimized.

It is totally alright for them to occupy the above minor positions since it does not involve large scale monetary transactions and secondly the President can easily work with these two individuals as was evident during pre-election times.

And may I also ask why the trusted aides should not be given government positions? If you can come up with a satisfactory answer or prove that their qualifications are not enough, then I guess you have a valid case.

        LOL.

This is still a fine example of corruption nepotism and “family rule”. What makes these people qualified to hold these positions other than their fathers/mothers infulence?

The fact you defend such moves show you (along with the whole My3 gang) are just frauds talking about “good governance” and “end” to family rule/corruption.

Its all “good” and “fair” if its your lot who do it.

Lets not forget My3’s brother is in charge of the TRC. Nicely monitoring all communications in Sri Lanka, abusing the internet/social media to spread false stories straight from the TRC office and of course silence/censor negatives (i.e. truth) about My3 rule

LOL. Sri Lanka will always be a backward nation because of this mind set.

I agree with you. Sri Lanka will always backward nation…… Well let me say differently, Sr Lanka will always maintain its standard as fourth world nation due to highly corrupted leaders, no visionary leaders, no educated leaders, greedy leaders, and highly rooted in cronyism. No one raised so much as a whisper when Mahinda and his cronies appointed hundreds of their family members to key positions to fleece the people. Now they are worried about two posts that have been given to individuals who would have, had Mahinda won, been behind bars for sure.

Paddy – “No one raised so much as a whisper ” because they were scared shitless of what would happen to them and/or their families if they were identified.

At least now (hopefully) people can voice their views and be free of violent repercussions.

Clear and correct thinking by Fazi. The positions are minor and have neither policy nor executive functions.

It will be absolutely wrong to appoint any particularly from the military to positions reserved for Foreign Service or SLAS or to Boards and Corporations or to any other civilian position.

To those armed, it is an incentive to do evil while in service particularly towards the minorities. Of late their capacity was measured this way and reward was suitably proportionate.

If their contribution was exemplary, they can be honoured with decorations.

All important Services have a Service Minute and adherence should be meticulous.

The USA having an ex-military ambassador (Afghanistan) is alright but not for Sri Lanka? Also nepotism at a high level is bad a but at a lower level is ‘alright’? Or, is the right/wrong based on what party is practising it?

        2

Fazl – You are very right in your statement. we should not take
every Sri Lankan as a corrupted case. did not President John F
Kennedy have his own brother Robert Kennedy as his Attorney General during his time.Remember during Prez Premadasa’s time Hema Premadasa’s brothers continued working in the ministries they were working in the same capacity they were in before the EP election. The problem, here, was the previous regime allowed every Dick Tom and Harry, close to the regime, to rob the country without any checks and novices among the ruling family were given positions, which they could not handle and embarked on corruption to get things done and judiciary was under the control of the president.

@ Lanka Watch Aiyoo Banda.. Thats how Corruption starts. Start small put them into ministeries of Importance and soon it grows to mass corruption. Yu have given us good eg of history lesson shame you didnt give us the corruption of each governmnet because of this kind of ‘nepotism’ .. Mahinda copied these methods and now the New president. Onlyu fools like you who said ‘its ok only small positions’ only fuel and later complain.

        • 8
          1

LW – Robert Kennedy was a highly qualified federal prosecutor way before JFK became president to the US. Further in the US even if the president appoints it has to be passed by the US senate. Which is a very difficult task as the candidate is grilled by the senate to the competancy of the job.

        What a foolish assement.

One can argue during MR Campaign his family helped, and thus because of this close relations there is Trust and thus a position is Entitled.
Then WHy throw the old regime out in the First place??? This is what MY3 and the UNP argued and the people. Not to follow the same path. I didnt know helping in elections made a person a suitable candidate for Governmnet Job.

Firstly at a WHIM the president cant appoint people without qualifications to positions in ministries because they helped during the elections, he has not even consulted with the minister in charge. Even a ‘minor positions’ in a ministery so IMPORTANT than the rest will have consequences. MR’s early days his Family held minor positions until we saw what happend later. Soon we will see the same style of Family Rule and corruption.

“MR’s early days his Family held minor positions until we saw what happend later. “

what minor positions ? Gota was appointed as defense secretary and Mr 10% (at that time) was appointed as the president’s adviser !

        Fazl,

I am surprised at your comments.

This is how the rot begins. Whether it is small jobs or big jobs it is still jobs for the boys.

For any kind of job a certain procedure and protocol should be followed. And it is by following such protocols that the most qualified and suitable person is appointed. Working hard at elections in support of a candidate is not a qualification for any job.

The concept of nepotism must be understood by all Sri Lankans. Nepotism is nepotism – whether large scale or small scale.

Just imagine if it is the norm to appoint every henchman or ardent supporter or poster boy to government jobs what a mess Sri Lanka would be or any country for that matter would be.

Fazi Muhammed, you are dead right and good that you put the record straight.

No system will be perfect and in criticizing, one should not split hairs. The important point here is that the appointments are minor in nature; besides they are close aides whom the President could utterly trust. Any leader needs men of such description around him. Besides, they are not such earth shattering appointments as diplomatic appointments.

I trust, just as much as people criticize him (which I think the he will encourage), they will also see the hugely good side of the man and wish him well.

What a breath of fresh air the new President has so far been!

People he Trust. Are you saying a Able Civil Servent cant be truested by the President??? God help Sri Lanka. Still MY3 has 11 siblings he can trust to put into power due to ‘TRUST’ hmm strange the same guiy said the same before him and we all know how that turned out.. You people sound like the Former MR supporters who used the same Arguments Trust and Small Poistions no..

Im gobsmacked, like Prince Charles used to say. I cannot believe this is coming from the Fazl Muhammed that we knew-the die-hard, fighter for whats fair and equitable, who had the guts to take on the Goat by its horns despite the threat of White Vans Now, he justifies something unjustifiable in most peoples eyes. He refers to these two grown up men as ‘kids’ – a new form of sychopancy towards the new man in power? Perhaps. According to him, these positions don’t involve large scale transactions. What stupid logic! Power grows with influence and all these ‘kids’ need is a foot in the door. And with a presidential relative for a janitor, closed doors open to reveal pandoras’ chests of fortune. Remember the Goats secret muti-million arms deals exposed by Iqbal Athas who subsequently went into hiding? This was also in the realm of the Defence Ministry. Millions can be made in this crucial area of secretive missions and deals and hard-working, innocent ‘kids’ are not immune to the bite of the corruption bug. His second argument is akin to the Princeling Baba Namal justifying to the ITV reporter his fathers appointment of his uncles into high-ranking govt positions, simply because they can be ‘trusted’ better than a non-relative. Absolutely laughable! What next, Fazl Muhammed – an ambassadorial post? Please don’t accept- we need you here to justify the unjustifiable simple because these obvious infringements don’t seem obvious to you anymore.

          Dear Omran & BBS Rep,

A lot of people worked for the change and there was quiet a few who worked directly with the President. Of which Rakitha Rajapakse, Suranjith (son-in-law), Karunaratne Paranawitharana (appointed Secretary Media Ministry), Malik (appointed Chairman – Asia Foundation)Chaminda Sirimalwatte (appointed Presidential Media Director,)Navaratne (appointed Gem & Jewellery Research – Chairman, Ranjit Meegaswatte (appointed Marine Environment Protection Authority Chairman)HE’s bro Telecom Chairman, Lawyer Zuhair (appointed DG – TRC), lawyer Rajika Kodituwakku (appointed coordinating secretary to the President) etc…

It is true that most of them who campaigned at the highest levels, expected positions. And that is fair for them to get the above posts since they worked for it. And most of them have University Degrees and/or public/private service experience to justify their appointments. What you must remember is that above positions needed to filled by somebody, so why not appoint people who are both loyal AND qualified?

The difference between MR appointing family members and MS doing the same is, MS appointed people who are honest and qualified and a couple of them HAPPENED to be relatives, whereas MR appointed unqualified family members solely due to family ties and to steal! If you look at all the above appointments, the son-in-law got only PRO post and the President’s bro got the Telecom post and everyone else was outsiders. Rakitha Rajapakse who is a lawyer and who is also the son of a UNP MP got only a media secretary position under a SLFP politician. Is it not good governance? And they got what they got not ‘cos of blood ties.

As for you accusing me, I too volunteered for the campaign, initially at the campaign office at Col-5, then at HE’s residence at Wijerama and was responsible for a very important part of the campaign. And to date, I have not got an acknowledgment let alone a ‘thank you’ note.

          – Am I complaining? NO!
          – Did I expect anything personally? NO!

Having done my part for the change of governments, I am in the midst of setting up an accountability and an anti-graft authority and going after the sharks… and hoping to present the concept paper to President Sirisena sometime next week. And no, I will not accept a position for the sake of having a position. Only if I can bring about a real change and at the highest levels, I will choose to be a part of it.

My failure to convince the president will not stop my crusade against corruption or abuse of power by ANY future government. That I guarantee you, God willing.
          :)

Sadly Fazl, your explanation is unacceptable. Pure and simple. The more you try to justify your stance on this matter the deeper the hole you dig for yourself.

I think you need reeducation about accountability and good governance. The Sri Lankan politicians think getting into power is to help themselves, help family and then friends. Your position on those appointments justify such thinking. The people did not give a mandate to My3 to be chief recruiter for public service jobs.

There are two officers of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service who were Sajin de Vass Gonaa’s favorites since they did so many illegal deals while they worked in the Foreign Ministry. They are Pathiratna who works as Minister in the Sri Lanka High Commission in London and the other fellow is the Consul General at the Sri Lanka Consulate in Melbourne Pushpakumara. Why we’re not these two rouges recalled?

Previous president made all four of his brothers as senior advisors and also given them high ministerial, speaker like posts. The current president has 12 brothers, unless at least 6 of them should appoint as senior advisors and give powerful ministries… Otherwise, this is not Lanka…. Last 60 years country went in this path, do you expect to go back to 1948 in 100 days…

Helping a couple of family members, friends or relatives
is not a big issue in countries like ours but nepotism
goes far beyond. Rajapakshas were evertwhere virtually
having a hand in everything of people’s life.Turn to
any side, you see Rajapaksha presence in some or other
form and it was this that people were annoyed with.
I happened to read somewhere that Obama has a brother
      in Kenya,living a difficult life.Neither Obama nor
his brother were interested to change the situation
for better but you can not expect Srilankans to
suddenly behave like the Obamas.Things might start to
dramatically change under JVP because they are
proving that they are not attracted by power and
positions.I mean the JVP after Wijeweera.

Gota approved weapons to armories: Police

In an intial statement to the CID, former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said it was he who had approved the issuance of automatic weapons to Rakna Arakshaka Lanka Limited and to the Avant Garde floating armoury in the Galle Port, Police said today.

His statement was recorded by the CID last week in connection with the activities of the two armouries which were recently checked by the police.

A three-member CID team which visited Mr. Rajapaksa’s residence to record his statement was told that he neede ample time to study the relevant documents prior to making a proper statement.

He was reported to have told the detectives that he would give a statement next week at a time he found convenient to do so.

When asked whether the detectives had accorded any special privilege to Mr. Rajapaksa visiting his residence instead of summoning him to the CID office to record the statement, Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said there was nothing wrong in the CID visiting somebody to record a statement.

He said the CID wanted to learn about an approval given by the former Defense Secretary and as such there was no necessity to summon him to the CID office.

SSP Rohana said the detectives would next obtain information on the weapons procurement procedure adopted by these armouries. (Kevin Kariyawasam)

why Special treatment to this Egoistic Megalomaniac? Why did the CID go to his house to take a statement? Kudu Dumiya had to go to the CID for 3 consecutive days and yet was not arrested.. This ASS has the nerve to tell the CID that he will make a statement at a “TIME CONVENIENT to him” … REALLY? Why is the CID giving him time to PREPARE his answers? Do we as ordinary citizens get this PRIVILEGE? HECK NO…

He seems more powerful than before… Isn’t he an ordinary citizen now? drag him by his collar and dump him in a 3×3 cell and then extract answers…

Has there been a deal between the Rajapaksa’s and Ranil I wonder.. so much for Yaha palanaya? yaha palanaya for whom? gota or the citizens of SL?

CT, please update the list with their qualification and relationship to the regime… more detail will give not only MR’s corruption but also we will know how badly we represent our country during the regime…

Relationships have already been revealed. Some are as follows:

Srimal Wickramasinghe – brother of Shiranthi Rajapakse. This man was holding Ambassador rank and earning salary equal to ambassador in Vienna. Passed GCE O/L.

Pradip Jayawardena – Grandson of late JRJ. Ravi J’s son.

Thanuja Usliyanage – son of Mrs. Indrani Sugathadasa (wife of Lalith Weeratunga).

Waruna Epasinghe – son of Prof. P W Epasinghe who was MR’s advisor. Waruna lost his job during US economic downturn. Then this job was given at Sri Lankan tax payer’s expense!

Chamitri Rambukwella – Keheliya’s daughter. Father was trying his best to make her a permanent member of diplomatic service. Failed as MR lost the election.

Yasara Abeynayake – former girl friend of Yoshitha Rajapakse. Given the highest diplomatic rank of Minister. A career officer should have at least 17 years service to reach this level!

Nawodh Hennayake – son of Prasanna Hennayake, a rogue and MR’s photographer.

Janathri Nanayakkara – niece of Vasudeva Nana. Father is millionaire businessman Asanga Nanayakkara.

    P R B W Corray (Ruvini) – niece of Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

Shalendri Talpawila – a relative of Lalith weeratunga from Matara. She was attached to CHOGM Secretariat by Sajin Vass.

Ratna Ranaweera – husband worked at MR’s office. Cannot speak or write in English but posted to Australia.

D G N Rambukwella – a lecturer from Colombo Uni. Dulles Alahapperuma’s friend. Dulles has recommended this appointment.

Dilukshan Jayasinghe – son of Minister Chandrani Bandara.

M I Tuduwewatta – daughetr of Dhammika Tuduwewatta, DIG of Presidential security and still serving under Maithripala!

Sepala Rathnayake – lawyer and a former Secretary of MR.

Pasanda Yapa Abeywardena – Melbourne, son of Lakshman Yapa – son of C B Rathnayake – Moscow and daughter of Ravindra Randeniya – Singapore, Muthu Padmakumara – London and daughter of Bandula Padmakaumara have resigned before the arrival of letters!

Raja Edirisuriya, on the recall list (ambassador to Brazilian) a lackey of Gota from Southern California. He was made the chairman of Mihin Air and State Engineering Corp by Gota. His qualification being a civil engineer and a plan checker. This is how the Jarapassa’s pillaged and plundered mother Lanka.

We are waiting for “Sirisena diplomats” list. Sirisena already proved blood is thicker than policies. His son in law became PR officer and minister wijeyadasa’s son became media sectary both at defence ministry. I am sure mangala will pick few his buddies so that he can have fun when he travel abroad.

Has the daughter of actor Ravindra Randeniya been recalled from the high commission of Singapore? Trust me, all she did was to strut up and down the passages of the high commission, with her sunglasses balancing precariously on top of her head. She didn’t do zilch nor did she know what to do. Don’t think the lady even knew what her designation was, but was awarded a vehicle, place of stay and domestic allowance. Hmmm, wish we could get such perks!

Interesting list! Sarath Wijesinghe raised money in London for MARA for the 2005 election. Highly connected: on one side related to MARA, SAM wijesinghe’s nephew therefore Rajiv’s cousin AND therefore related to Ranil, Nivard Cabraal’s wife’s first cousin AND the [Edited out] Getamanne priests own brother! Funny with all these connection why he did not wriggle out!

another appointee to the middle east was ? Some sort of an Unqualified technician who is Mahinda’s 1st cousin (on the mother’s side) Wishva Dissanayaka….. His name may be in the 3rd list or the ministry may not even know it!!!

Recalling appointees even if they were political appointees, from cushy diplomatic jobs is a good thing, only if they were really inept, problematic or had any other issue that impacted on performance. If they recalled purely as political vendetta then it is not a good thing.

But who will replace them is where the real issue lies. Sri Lanka has an unenviable record when coming to ‘jobs for the boys’ or the relatives.

Be ready to be surprised when you see who replaces these people?

A W Pathiraja who has already completed 05 years in Brazil at Minister has not been recalled. He is the culprit who prepared a Cabinet paper at the request of GLP and Sajin with a view to absorbing all the politically appointees to our missions to the foreign service. Third grade Professor Peiris without any shame sought Cabinet approval for it but due to objections from some ministers he was compelled to withdraw it.
Such a rascal Pathiraja who conspired to destroy career foreign service is now 67 years old but still not out in Brazil!

Yasara Abeynaike, the ex gf of YO-SHIT-A ( daughter of Thanuja Fonseka/ Grand daughter of actor late Gamini Fonseka) will have a tough time in SL, she lied to the CID about the involvement of YOshit in the murder of Wasim Thajudeen. She was packed off WITH FAMILY to OZ and while there she made a statement that Yo-shit was involved in the murder, now she may claim asylum stating that her life is at risk…

Karma works in funny ways….she tried to hide a murder and now is in hot waters… She deserves to be PUNISHED for doing so..

This murder case which was wrapped off is now re=opened… NICE !!

They were all henchmen of Gota

How about the Rathupaswela Brigadier who shot dead an innocent protester who was sent to a foreign mission?

The problem will be to find genuinely qualified officers to replace these positions.
The foreign service had been run down so badly over the last fifty years giving way to political panderers. It became a norm that these positions were reserved as rewards for supporters and extended family of the person in power. The last period when qualified foreign office personnel were appointed by merit was when Dudley Senanayake was the prime minister.
Good luck to Sirisena if he can find enough suitable officers. My fear is another set of panthang kaarayaas will jump the band wagon.

Did Bandula Jayasekara resign before been recalled? Smart arse spinner. Wasted tax payer money on the Sydney Majestic entertaining trinity friends and women. Disgrace.

Yasara enjoyed the high life with Yoshitha and wanted more and more. Bandula found her a luxury apartment in a Sydney with all comforts paid by the state. The two thought they were in for the ride of a life, spending our money on theatre and every function on offer. Time they were recalled to do real work. Some hard work for a living.

I don’t see the name of “Ambassador” BIJAY (Bandula Jayasekera) on the list of those recalled. With Yasara’s return to base, he may have gone to Geneva on a special assignment, I believe!

under these totally corrupt circumstances no tamil or muslim would have received any fair treatment in this kind of appointments. all perks are shared by cronies of big man.even qualified sinhalese faced the same treatment.

Don’t be too surprised if Lakshmsn Hulugalle is reappointed to Com Bank board.

Dinesh and the rest of the board at Com Bank were very happy to have him as a board member.

No one said anything or did anything.

This is corporate governance in Colombo!!!

” Now they are worried about two posts that have been given to individuals who would have, had Mahinda won, been behind bars for sure.”

About the two your individuals – behind bars, well previously Gen. Sarath Fonseka ran for presidency, and for his alleged involvement he got punished, now who else went behind bars if you may name his supporters who got prison terms please. And you argue that it is fare to favor those two individuals over their support rendered for M3 appointment, meaning it is all ok to do political bias appointments as well as to get family on board, what do you call rather promote this governance – yes Good Governance, terrible nooo
