Gaza: Creating Hell On Earth

By Lasantha Pethiyagoda

Prof (Emeritus) Lasantha Pethiyagoda

I have been deeply distressed by Israel’s military assault on the population of Gaza. Many people of Sri Lankan origin had not bothered to study the history of the plight of Palestinians until the brave military operation by the Palestinian Resistance on 7th Oct 2023.

Consider the background of the Zionist apartheid state; one issue is the Right of Return. Within two years of the Zionist state calling itself Israel being proclaimed in the Knesset, ‘The Law of Return’ was established, a law which allows any Jew around the world to migrate to Israel and automatically become citizens, developing illegal settlements with impunity. In 1952, the Knesset passed the Citizenship Law, which effectively bars any Palestinian not living in Israel from returning and reclaiming their former property from the colonisers.

In the distribution of land resources, the glaring injustice is just as blatant. Over ninety per cent of the Palestinian community in Israel desperately hold on to less than three per cent of their land, mostly in their towns and villages, after waves of confiscation by the Zionist state which forcibly expropriated more than two-thirds of their land.

This confiscated land is kept in trust for illegal, armed Jewish settlers and for Jews around the globe, who might one day want to become citizens. Palestinians living in Israel cannot claim back land illegally taken from them, under the aegis of the Absentee Property Law of 1950. Most Sri Lankans are unaware of this background.

I see the murderous campaign of the Palestinian genocide as perhaps the gravest moral crisis of our time. The relentless blistering bombardments with 2000-pound bombs, the ever-mounting death toll of mostly women and children, the deadly and utterly inhumane blockade of vital essentials like food and water, the annihilation of innocent human lives, premeditated and using Oct 7th as a pretext grieve me terribly.

These events sear our moral consciousness like a white-hot iron and demand a desperate scream from the depths of the soul. Offering a glimmer of hope for the Global South, in its own discreet tenor, the International Court of Justice has issued such a cry of outrage, yet it seems to have fallen on deaf ears among the arbiters of the rules-based world order.

Given the regular instances of sheer inhumanity unfolding over just two decades, when the US-led alliances destroyed millions of poor lives in the middle eastern Global South, why should I highlight Gaza as the major moral calamity of our time? Let me list five reasons why.

Primarily, the sheer intensity of the assault on a cornered and defenceless population of women and children as a vastly disproportionate “response” to the aggression by Hamas.

Secondly, the severity and indiscriminate nature of the devastation, laying waste to wholly unconnected structures, hospitals, cemeteries and seats of learning falsely claiming they all harbour “terrorists”.

Thirdly, the speed at which this carnage is being conducted, as if some undisclosed timeline exists for its “completion”. The use of an ever-changing rationale, with claims such as enemy use of human shields or embedding among civilians, put forward at the aggressor’s convenience.

Fourthly, thanks to modern technology and various social media platforms, the genocide comes live to our lounge rooms or mobile devices unlike during the Nazi holocaust and other war crimes like Tutsi in Rwanda or Rohingya in Myanmar the genocide in Gaza unfolds live on our television and computer screens, right before our eyes, although grievous atrocities on Gaza especially since 2006 escaped the world’s attention with a dedicated mainstream Western media covering up.

Fifthly, the proportion of non-combatants deliberately targeted is unprecedented in the history of war. The statistics representing deaths, maiming with amputations, grievous injuries, and destruction include doctors, medical staff, journalists, and university teachers singled out and struck down bear witness to the intent despite attempts at obfuscation.

All areas of the tiny Gaza strip have become a death camp where no one is safe anywhere. Whole families are being liquidated in entire neighbourhoods with bunker-buster bombs that collapse and crush entire blocks, leaving injured women and children, the elderly, to die horrible long-drawn deaths under the rubble. Orphans, unlucky to escape and witness the trauma firsthand, are scarred for their entire life if they somehow survive.

Starvation and epidemics due to lack of sanitation, lack of nutrition are some of the worst crimes against humanity. These are perpetrated with absolute impunity. One brave active American air force officer in uniform recently set himself on fire in front of the Israeli embassy screaming “Free Palestine” until overcome by the flames.

Western country leaders collectively encourage the genocide and directly assist by supplying arms to Israel and denying aid to the UN works and refugee agency with a staff of thousands who had helped feed and treat refugees in the region. The beholden Arab leaders in the region, bribed well with American money, ignore the cries of protest from their people. The circling vultures are sensing that easy prey will soon abound.

The images of a medieval apocalypse jump out from our television screens begging us for mercy. We see children with amputated limbs, their bodies torn and broken; babies abandoned in powerless incubators long dead and decaying; apartment buildings, schools and universities collapsing like dominoes; refugees crammed into rat and cockroach infested make-shift camps, children crying out for water and food; the dying and screaming, together with corpses bulldozed into mass graves; captives blindfolded and stripped naked, paraded like cattle through desolate streets, to an unknowable fate.

Most of us find these realities too difficult to absorb, and turn away, to indulge in our normal activities like chatting with friends, going out for a meal with former school-mates, joining a family gathering, going to a cultural event instead. Most younger people focus on working and providing for their families in relative comfort and security.

However, our humanity is seriously questioned. Once we bear witness to these horrific crimes, we should feel that a heavy moral responsibility has fallen on our shoulders, a burden of conscience we cannot shrug away claiming these atrocities don’t concern us. The burden is painful, but also sobering, in reminding us of our capacity for empathy.

Another way in which the crisis in Gaza bears moral weight relates specifically to citizens of the United States. It is complicit in Israel’s crimes. It blatantly funds Israel’s military, supplying it with the most advanced weaponry available. It provides Israel diplomatic cover at the UN security council through use of a wholly unfair veto. It gives Israel moral cover by echoing the messages of its propaganda machine in the media, while tarring those who criticize its actions.

This unwavering loyalty to a pariah nation that consistently flouts international law overturns the moral prism through which most people view the global order. Now, as in Iraq, Afghanistan and Libya before, the masks come off, exposing the hypocrisy of the major Western powers hidden behind their humbug of polished exteriors.

There is simply no excuse for sitting around speechless on the sidelines. We cannot let silence reign as the final word on repulsively perverted injustice.

Everyone with a conscience must actively express their solidarity with the besieged Palestinians who cannot speak for themselves. We must be in solidarity with any and every group or country that supports the Palestinian cause of resistance by lending our support in numerous ways.

Genocide is taking place now, before our eyes. Either most Sri Lankan editors, journalist and writers are unaware of facts listed accurately in the above article, or lack the mental powers to do so. Instead they repeat the manipulations and distortions of the Anglo-Saxon world, the self-proclaimed “civilized world”, so-called “defenders of human rights” coerce them to repeat, believing that’s their job: just copy, cut and paste, repeat. Disgraceful!

      Me too Professor.
However I had been deeply distressed by the combination of military, police assault on the population of Sri Lanka for many many years, or since 1971 (according to my Elders).

What can or should we do?

Ranil maama supports western genocide against the Palestinians. So he’s going to open the Red Sea and Suez Canal, becoming one of 4 countries of the 193 world countries who support the US venture. Shipping there is important because Asian supplies can reach Israel, including arms’ shipments.

What next for Sri Lanka? Support the US in keeping the Taiwan Straits open?

Instead of world-stage posturing, Ranil maama should diet and exercise. His well-fed stomach [Maara bada gediya!] stands out in any photo. Tells aid donors Sri Lankans aren’t in need, that they don’t starve. Aney bung!

      Sonali,

Yes, a very thorough and heartfelt essay from Lasantha P. World must indeed join in solidarity for the suffering Palestinians and condemn the atrocities of Israel.

As per Ranil, he did declare his support for a Palestinian state, although using a bankrupt country to send a warship to fight the Houthis and engage in that war is another dirty way to say there is no money for elections.

If we are to understand the Jews, we must take the Biblical texts of Jesus’s life and sayings very seriously. He identified his people very well : The Scribes and the Pharisees who put him to death, and the common Jewish Masses who wept for him. The same people have survived via DNA and rebirth over 2,000 years.

Power hungry Jews took the wealth of Europe and set up in America, leaving their Masses to suffer the Holocaust in retaliation. They continually tried to set up their power madness in Europe, but were disallowed. New World America welcomed them and the stolen monies. Same thing is happening on Palestinian soil and the US is caught in their monetary trap.

The dichotomy between these 1% greedy Pharisees and Scribes and the 99% innocent Peter the fisherman and James the son of Zebedee, is far worse than the dichotomy between Ranil -Rajapaksas – Pohottuwas and the rest of the languishing Lankans……so you can imagine the horrors of Gaza.

But beware all Lankans : We are only at the beginning of the similar global monetary trap that the Palestinians are enduring. All hell will soon spill over into beloved the Motherland when the Regime’s guns, water-cannons, poison-gas, and instruments of torture, and death become a greater reality.

Let us not confuse Zionism with Judaism or Jewish identity.
It will be like identifying the German people with Nazi ideology.
Both influenced the people for some time, but do not represent the people now.
Jews worldwide are now increasingly openly critical of Israeli policy than our journalist community.

rtf, You do well by warning all Lankans to beware when death becomes a greater reality in our beloved Motherland. The difference from Gaza is that the one percent greedy Pharisees and Scribes in Israel or those known as Zionists, did the creator’s plan by the crucifixion of Jesus, allowing God Almighty to resurrect the same Jesus as the crucified Jesus. This showed that a sinless person cannot be held back in the place of death and Jesus was never sick in his life. Once born to earth, man’s soul cannot vanish without a destination. Also the door to heaven opened for Jesus like the door to death and the door to resurrection. Those who believe this biblical record, can never be overcome by the disobedient satan under many names craving to be worshipped by humans as done by the fallen angelic demons. Wise to believe jewish Jesus than terrorist Hamas in Gaza.

      Hello DTG,
At what point did all these Demons and Angels stop visiting Planet Earth. My parents and grandparents had no recollection of any supernatural visitations during their lives or even that of my great grandmother born in 1875.
I once asked a young Jehova’s Witness if the prophets were free from sin? She replied of course. I then quoted Genesis 38 regarding the Prophet Judah – “Judah saw her and thought she was a prostitute (she had covered her face). He asked for her to be intimate with him, not knowing she was his daughter-in-law.” As soon as I asked her for an explanation an older man quickly hustled her away, shouting that I was an agent of the Devil.
I replied with the words from the Rolling Stones song
      “Pleased to meet you
      Hope you guess my name”

      Best regards

      David the good,

Creator’s plan on Jesus was not established as part of the creation of the universe. It’s only when His work of creation went awry due to Satan, that the Creator had to fix things. So, that means, the Pharisees and Scribes and their global counterparts are still bad, and do not have special privileges because they were in the plan for the rest of us to revel in the crucifixion of Jesus. No, it broke God’s heart that he had to send his only beloved son to suffer for the sins of the 1%. And he won’t do it again. Jesus will come again in glory instead.

        Hello DTG,

How can an omnipotent, all powerful Creator’s plan go awry – its a contradiction. Have you ever heard of the term “cognitive dissonance”? Both you and your “Creator” must suffer painful bouts of this condition.

                https://phys.org/news/2011-10-nature-laws-vary-universe.html

One of the laws of nature may vary across the Universe, according to a study published today in the journal Physical Review Letters.

One of the most cherished principles in science – the constancy of physics – may not be true, according to research carried out at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), Swinburne University of Technology and the University of Cambridge

                https://news.mit.edu/2010/multiple-universes
A definitive answer is impossible, since we have no way of directly studying other universes. But cosmologists speculate that a multitude of other universes exist, each with its own laws of physics. Recently physicists at MIT have shown that in theory, alternate universes could be quite congenial to life, even if their physical laws are very different from our own.

                  Hello SJ
One of the things that impressed me regarding the Buddha was his skepticism. If people make extraordinary claims they have to show extraordinary evidence. In Ramona’s last paragraph she says “But cosmologists speculate that a multitude of other universes exist, each with its own laws of physics.” There is still no evidence for Hugh Everett’s Multiverse Theory https://www.newscientist.com/article/dn26261-hugh-everett-the-man-who-gave-us-the-multiverse/

                    LankaSoct,

You are so muddled. I speculate on God the same way scientists speculate on different laws of physics. My first link speaks about evidence that is very definite. Multiverses are even beyond this universe, so we will only speak of this one where there is evidence.

“Astrophysicists have found that the laws of physics in outer space are different to those in our galaxy. By analysing a quasar signal from 13 billion years ago, they found that in addition, the magnitude of changes in these laws of physics in the Universe varies. Professor Mariusz P. Dąbrowski from the University of Szczecin who took part in the international project told PAP: “In our research we wonder if the laws of physics here and now are the same as they were somewhere else long ago. It turns out that they are not.” https://scienceinpoland.pl/en/news/news%2C82061%2Claws-physics-billions-light-years-away-are-different-those-here.html.

Still evidence of different laws of physics do not conclusively mean that there is god or many gods. One can only speculate. I am more prone to the Buddhist way of understanding the universe, but I reserve some religiosity on God the Creator, and sometimes on many Gods. No sin in this if you are a Buddhist.

rtf, Jesus was crucified before the foundation of the world Rev.13,8 and 1Peter 1,20 and other scriptures. Before man was created God knew the future and gave man free will to choose. Jesus paid the price for freedom from sin for all humanity, but some will not choose it.

          David,

          I mean…..Revelatios
was written around 50 AD. So as there are no written records before or even just after creation (say 1-million BC), then it is mere speculation. I would only believe it if it had been written just before or after the creation.
          +
Even if he was chosen before the creation of the world as in 1Peter 1,20, it was one tool in God’s toolkit in case things went wrong….we being given free-will and all that (if 1% had been good, poor Jesus would not have had to suffer the pains of the given free – will). Anyway, as that has not seemed to work, Jesus is coming back in glory to punish the 1% he continuously spoke against.

Glorifying the 1% who crucified him is diametrically opposite to Christ’s message of love and caring for fellow men and the reason he came to die.

If the intention was to give freewill, Boss should have not messed around with the use of freewill.
What kind of freewill is freewill if it has to conform to the Boss’s view.

          David,

Rev.13,8 : “All the inhabitants of the earth will worship it, all whose names were not written from the foundation of the world in the book of life, which belongs to the Lamb who was slain.”

According to how you are interpreting it, Christ must have been crucified from the very beginning of creation, so all those who existed pre-crucifixion could be included. Christ is forever crucified (omg). New religion! But we all know that the crucifixion was 2,000 years ago and lasted 3 hours. And he is coming back again in glory.

I think there is another explanation to that passage. Certain Jewish sects like the Sadducees, believe in rebirth/reincarnation like the Buddhists/Hindus (and James the Apostle who wrote the Revelations and Peter the Fisherman were Jews). So, by their reasoning, those who believed in Christ since the crucifixion have also lived before the crucifixion. Therefore, they were written in the book of life since the very beginning.

“He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.” 1Peter 1,20

In 1Peter 1,20 , Christ was just chosen, but not crucified since the beginning of creation.

What ever the interpretation is, we cannot be honoring the 1% for crucifying Jesus. They never accepted him and are forever damned, according to book of life.

      .
You have now added to the record that “Jesus was never sick in his life.” So many other bits of unproven dogma. They beat the Koran’s claims (I must acknowledge that all that was never properly studied by me) that Jesus never died upon the cross, but was taken straight to heaven.
      .
I’m trying hard to understand you, dtg, but RTF and Lasantha in their different ways make sense.

Sinhala_Man, You say you are trying hard to understand me. It is just that I developed faith to believe what is recorded by about 40 or more authors writng over more than two to four thousand years, a continuing understandable biblical story (prophecy) regarding natural and spiritual combined realms, God in the spiritual supernatural realm having created the natural physical realm. It is easy to believe the biblical story which promises us an eternal state in God’s presence rather than miss him and be in the only other state possible ruled by satan till all go into the lake of fire. Mat.25,41 says God created the everlasting fire for the devil and his angels (demons). If humans decide to worship multiple other gods devil has made, its a sad loss. In all my comments to all here, I only repeat the biblical version.

Please take some advice from Ramona (I think she has stolen my Time Machine) and consider other Religions like Buddhism. The Buddha taught that you should not believe anything that someone says (even those in Authority) without looking at the Evidence yourself. If it is convincing then fine believe it.
But first read what Karl Popper said on Falsifiability or Alan Chalmers “What Is This Thing Called Science” for very good explanations of the Scientific Method. Or you could go back 700 years ago and use a simpler method called Occam’s razor.

Many like to speculate and ponder on scientific discoveries and concepts . We can relate it to religion if we wish, but putting us into a bird cage with religion threatening us against this is quite macabre. From a Christian perspective, there is the possibility of other gods, although it is only the main one who should be worshiped. The Book of Exodus in the Bible acknowledges and affirms the existence of other gods.

That’s what good and wholesome about Buddhism. It gives us the freedom to navigate our minds and thoughts with the many possibilities out there, with no threat towards our afterlives. As per gods and goddesses, and an ultimate God, they remain as speculation and possible illusory concepts of the mind….ones that can be put to rest via enlightenment. Main thing is following a code of conduct where you can achieve happiness on earth.

The Hamas charter calls for the total elimination of Israel:

    On the Destruction of Israel:

    —————————–

‘Israel will exist and will continue to exist until Islam will

obliterate it, just as it obliterated others before it.’ (Preamble)

    https://irp.fas.org/world/para/docs/880818a.htm

Some would argue that Hamas is not serious. The problem is that Hamas is backed by Iran. The attacks of Oct.7th were coordinated with Iran. So even if Hamas is not serious about the elimination of Israel, the Iranian factor changes the dynamics. Israel cannot allow this alliance to grow to the point where Hamas fires more and more sophisticated missiles at major population centres.

    • 12
      1

Lester, didnt you know that in 2017, Hamas revised its original 1988 charter to recognise, in effect, a two-state solution — & therefore the existence of Israel as a legitimate entity? This, even as Israel insists it can no longer allow Hamas to exist, and as Israeli politicians, led by Netanyahu, have ruled out a two-state solution.

      • 5
        12

        Manel Fonseka,

As far as I am aware, Hamas does not recognize Israel as a legitimate state. According to Khaled Mashal: “Hamas advocates the liberation of all of Palestine but is ready to support the state on 1967 borders without recognising Israel or ceding any rights.” A two-state solution is not viable without explicit recognition of the existence of Israel and its borders in particular.

Qatar is the biggest financial backer of Hamas. But the military capability of Hamas is growing in proportion to Iranian assistance.

Israel is a nuclear-armed entity. It cannot be defeated militarily. Since it is an important arms exporter, Western countries are reluctant to apply significant economic pressure. The Gulf Arab countries and Russia also buy weapons from Israel.

The best solution for the Palestinians is to distance themselves from Hamas and seek some kind of diplomatic solution. Now that the court of international opinion is on their side, there is a good possibility of working something out.

        MF:
You should get your facts straight. Islamic Resistance Movement (aka “Hamas”) has not changed its original stance one bit.

Article 20 of their new charter of 2017 says, “However, without compromising its rejection of the Zionist entity and without relinquishing any Palestinian rights, Hamas considers the establishment of a fully sovereign and independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital along the lines of the 4th of June 1967….”

But Article 27 says, “There is no alternative to a fully sovereign Palestinian State on the entire national Palestinian soil, with Jerusalem as its capital,” and the rest of the charter is crystal clear that Palestine belongs only to the Palestinians and Israel as a state has no place in it.

Here’s a link to their new charter:

        https://web.archive.org/web/20170510123932/http://hamas.ps/en/post/678/

The differences in the new charter are merely cosmetic to make Hamas seem more reasonable and palatable internationally and designed to mislead and fool gullibles like you.

          PS.

          MF:
Note that the Preamble to the new charter of Hamas starts with a falsehood:

“Palestine is the land of the Arab Palestinian people, from it they originate, to it they adhere and belong, and about it they reach out and communicate.”

Arab Palestinians did not originate in Palestine, period.

      Lester,
While you say Iran is backing Hamas, dont forget that Qatar, I think it is, was giving Hamas huge amounts of aid, and, I think, via Netanyahu, who was playing a double game. Moreover, Hamas attacks are those of a resistance nature, responding to decades of bombings, oppression, siege, etc by Israel.

Have you really gone into the history of this tragedy?

        Hello Manel,
Maybe Lester can look at this NYT report. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/world/middleeast/israel-qatar-money-prop-up-hamas.html
        From the report
“As far back as December 2012, Mr. Netanyahu told the prominent Israeli journalist Dan Margalit that it was important to keep Hamas strong, as a counterweight to the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank.”
I was in Qatar from 2010 to 2021 working on a Defence Contract and I didn’t see a single Israeli Weapon. https://www.timesofisrael.com/israel-named-worlds-8th-largest-arms-exporter/
From the article “The report editor, Pieter Wezeman, told the Globes newspaper that Israel exports arms to all regions of the world, with the exception of the Middle East.”

          LankaScot,

The Arab states are more interested in doing business with Israel than using their leverage to garner a ceasefire.

“Arab states that normalised ties with Israel under the Abraham Accords accounted for about 25 percent of Israel’s record $12.5bn in defence exports last year, signalling the deepening economic and defence links between the countries.”

“The UAE, Morocco, and Bahrain established official relations with Israel in 2020 as part of the US-Backed Abraham Accords.

The countries have since moved to cement ties in the defence sphere. Israel dispatched a senior Israeli navy officer to Bahrain last year. According to satellite images, the UAE has deployed Israeli Barak aerial defence systems.”

            Hello Lester,
First Morocco is not in the Middle East or even a gulf Arab State, I know because I have been there. Remember your quote “Arab states that normalised ties with Israel”. These were the states that blockaded Qatar in part because of their support for Palestinians and their refusal to curtail Al Jazeera’s reporting.
The Saudis had previously stolen part of Qatar and blocked off the road to the UAE so that Qatar depended almost entirely on Saudi for the import of goods. Before the blockade I used to see miles of trucks waiting to pass through Saudi Customs at the Abu Samra crossing. Thankfully Turkey and Iran came to Qatar’s aid. The presence of Turkish troops in Qatar prevented a full scale invasion. Bahrain does whatever Saudi says despite having a large Shia population that it regularly oppresses. The UAE is one of the most corrupt countries in the Middle East and is full of Sri Lankan criminals (mostly drug dealers and money launderers). Now with Al Jazeera’s daily reporting of the atrocities committed by the Israelis Saudi and UAE have to be very careful. Their youth all have access to the Internet.

              LankaScot,

Keep in mind, I quoted from an article. However, for practical purposes, Morocco is considered part of the Middle East, despite being geographically located in North Africa. The excerpt below is from the Encyclopedia Britannica, which I presume hires experts with far greater geographical knowledge than you or I:

“Today we consider the Middle East to span from Morocco to the Arabian Peninsula and Iran. (Some scholars and companies use the acronym MENA—Middle East and North Africa—as they feel it more accurately describes the region of their research and business.) While Morocco, Tunisia, and Algeria may seem to be geographical outliers, their similar sentiment, religion, and policies have led them to be considered part of this region.”

              https://www.britannica.com/story/are-the-middle-east-and-the-near-east-the-same-thing

Criminals come in all stripes. How about Sawney Bean or William Wallace?

The main point is that Israel does indeed sell weapons to Arab countries. I have given direct examples. Corruption does not matter. The whole point of the Abraham Accords was for Arab countries to normalize relations with Israel to expedite the weapons sales. that’s why Iran used Hamas to carry out the Oct.7th attacks.

                Hello Lester,
It’s a shame that you couldn’t meet Sawney Bean in person, you could have had a meal with him, or more correctly he could have had a meal of you. However he and his clan of cannibals were dispatched (possibly as there is little real evidence for Sawney) by my distant relative James Stewart. William Wallace however was a real person, but didn’t speak with an Australian accent (Braveheart for those that don’t know of Wallace). Wallace was betrayed to Edward 1st of England by John de Menteith and hung drawn and quartered on a trumped up charge of Treason. People (and Kings) back then were just as devious as they are today.
                https://www.gov.scot/news/william-wallace-letter-on-display/
After Edwards son was defeated at Bannockburn in 1314 the Scots drew up the Declaration of Arbroath in 1320 – https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/Declaration
which was addressed/delivered to the Pope and includes the phrase ‘It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself’

Yes, the laws are arbitrary. Especially when you are of the stock of “House of Saud.” I hope you did not take offense at the joke about Wallace, a great leader by any measure. There were quite a few like him in Kandy. And it was a *foreigner* (Telugu) who betrayed the Kandyans to the British.

                    Hello Lester,
L P Hartley wrote ‘The Past is a Foreign Country: They do Things Differently.
“Distant, intangible, unreliable, lost, our histories, at the levels of personal and national, are at best half-remembered and at worst actively misrepresented”
However I don’t think that people have changed much in the last 10,000 years or so of civilisation.
You might not be aware, the caricature of Sawney was used by the English to denigrate the “Savage” Highlanders after the Jacobite uprising in 1745. We Scots have an empathy towards colonised people, despite the fact that many Scots fought in the British Empire’s Regiments against them.

Professor, can you suggest some meaningful way to express one’s solidarity with this long-suffering people? I wonder if the govt’s setting-up of a fund for Palestine is sincere & worth contributing to.

It seems there are no limits to the cruelty, criminality & inhumanity of the Israeli state. I was going to say “of the Zionists” but this latest manifestation comes from something more than a handful of extremists/fascists. What does it say of a civilization whose people can actually mass at the Erez crossing to prevent humanitarian aid being delivered to starving people? Nurit Peled-Elhanan’s* book “Palestine in Israeli School Books: Ideology and Propaganda in Education”, argues that the textbooks used in the school system” are laced with a pro-Israel ideology, which plays a part in priming Israeli children for military service”. The same system moulded Minister Gallant who called the Palestinian resistance “human animals” & the schoolchildren whose singing celebrated the Gaza Genocide . See https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2023/12/13/its-not-shocking-to-see-israeli-children-celebrate-the-gaza-genocide

yesterday’s massacre of civilians who came to collect food only confirms that a permanent ceasefire with UN peacekeeepers in the gaza now is a must. The whole world except the US that keeps vetoing on everything is saying so but that jewish lobby stooge biden is not listening to them.

with regard to the permanent solution to this i thought that a two state solution is the only possible solution, but sadly after seeing the massive illegal jewish settlemnts in the west bank and yesterday the settelers have appropriated more land,i feel this solution is not possible. Also there is the al-aqsa on the temple mount in jeruselem.Jews consider that to be built on the temple that king solomon built 3000 years ago. This is another vexed matter that will be difficult to resolve in a 2 state solution.

so what is the solution. There is only a military one.1.2 billion muslims vs 7 million jews.

shankar, You end up by saying “so what is the solution” You also say “a military solution of 1.2 billion muslims vs. 7 million jews” Please go further than that as the bible says that when Jesus returns, Lord will make Jerusalem a heavy stone, a cup of drunkenness for peoples and nations gathered against it. Zech.12,2 onwards. vs.10 says he will pour his spirit of grace and supplication and they will look on whom they pierced and mourn with grief. Jewry will accept Jesus. Names of idol gods will be cut off from the land. No 2 states. Massacres going on now will progress.

It is finally the middle east and all gathered there to battle the return of Christ, called Armageddon war which will descend to Jerusalem, from where there will be the rule of the kingdom of heaven, with no sickness but offered forgiveness of sins for those willing to accept such.

rtf, I have heard it preached that the 144,000 sealed jewish evangelists redeemed from the 12 tribes of Israel and can sing a new song before the throne are called the first fruits (Rev.14,4) are the ones who minister to rest of Israel tribes. That is how the rest of Israel will hear the gospel and accept their messiah. I am aware that these harp ministries are already at work on the mount of olives in Jerusalem where Jesus will come back first as he ascended from there. Then he will enter the eastern golden gate which is still closed. When Jesus returns, every eye will see him. Some will not receive him through fear.

The rest of the Jews who are not called up to heaven with Jesus, can be in other parts of the world, especially in this time of online connectivity. All that is needed are 144,000 Jews in Jerusalem to welcome Jesus. Jesus will be sad and dissappointed with the Jews who stole the Palastinian lands through torture, war, and death.

Neglecting the fact that the transfer of wealth favors the group with a higher IQ. If Muslims united behind Iran, they could stop Israel. But that would be haram, since Shia are considered kufr. Look what Turkey and Saudi Arabia did to Syria, they thoroughly pulverized that country by letting ISIS and FSA run rampant. It was the best Arab democracy outside of Lebanon. If you are going to fight Israel and its partner, the US, you need the best fighters. Fighters like Hezbollah, who are well-trained after fighting in Syria and against Israel. You need the best weapons and Iran is leagues ahead of any Arab nation.

Hindians were awarded a few Nobel prizes, assuming Nobel prizes are directly connected to their IQ, why not give up and transfer the control of island to Hindians who can create wealth and share it with us?

          Native,

“If that is true, what Majoritarianism that you favour got to do with wealth creation?”

One minority had their own “de-facto” state for 10 years under CBK. They used the opportunity to recruit child soldiers and suicide bombers. The other minority carried out the Easter attacks without any initial provocation. So if we accept that majoritarianism doesn’t work, the opposite is an even worse solution.

“why not give up and transfer the control of island to Hindians who can create wealth and share it with us?”

Those Indians who won Nobel Prizes in science and medicine were all Brahmins, with one exception. Brahmins are only 4% of the Indian population, so Hindia taking over S. Lanka would not make a difference. These days there are educated Lankans, it’s a matter of bringing them back through FDI and other incentives.

Only isolated individuals performing temple functions. Again, why don’t you define “community” before writing rubbish?

          Shankar,

Israel will use its nuclear weapons (around 300) if it comes to that. People like Erdogan and Jordan’s Abdullah talk big, but they know exactly what will happen if they send any military to Israel. I see the Israeli strategy now as two-fold: (1) destroy Gaza to the point where no one can live there or (2) inflict so much hell on Gazans that they turn against Hamas. It looks like Israel is pushing the first strategy at the moment, despite strong international pressure. You’re right about resistance. Hezbollah has better fighters and weapons than Hamas. There is speculation Israel will invade Lebanon after Gaza, to ensure another Oct.7th attack does not take place in Northern Israel. Weapons are not a problem for Israel. The US will keep supplying them. If Biden loses the election in Nov, I can definitely see Israel invading Lebanon and the US invading Iran. It’s a bad situation for the Palestinians. There’s no way out. As you know, billionaire Jews are all on the side of Israel and they will use their financial/political clout to get their way.

Palestine had been the motherland of the Jews people.no Gaza and no west bank areas existed in that entire area. Roman empire captured that region in 11th or 12th century BCE. Because of Romans brutalities Jewish community migrated to Europe. Then came Engift. Peoples and converted GAZA city as transits point.for east west trading. time to time Europeans. Captured that area for eat west trading. at that time no famous canal existed and navigation around Africa unknown to human. As such I must say entire palatine area belong to Jewish community. Arabs and Arabs plus Europeans community have no say in that area.

      Hell Adiwasiya.
Sorry to nitpick there was no Roman Empire in the 11th or 12th Century BCE. Rome itself was founded in 753 BC and didn’t occupy Palestine until 63 BC. Even the name Palestine came from a none Jewish people – the Philistines.
The rest of your historical description I find difficult to follow.

Discarding Israeli/American propaganda which one of you have the courage to say this about Hamas……….

“Hamas is regularly described as ‘Iranian-backed Hamas, which is dedicated to the destruction of Israel.’ One will be hard put to find something like ‘democratically elected Hamas, which has long been calling for a two-state settlement in accord with the international consensus’—blocked for over 30 years by the US and Israel. All true, but not a useful contribution to the Party Line, hence dispensable.”

nimal fernando, You speak of Iranian_backed Hamas destroying Israel. True that there is no democratic Hamas. Even the bible says that in the latter days, Daniel the prophet was shown that even in angelic war of releasing Israel, the prince of Persia (Iran) has to be fought. If Russia cannot provide arms business to Iran, Russia too will join Iran to fight Israel. So wars will escalate in spite of peace treaties, until the eastern nations too will march across the dried up Euphrates river to Iran and then further to the battle of Armageddon in northern Israel, finally descending to Jerusalem at the return of jewish Jesus as the prince of peace to Jerusalem to end all wars and establish his kingdom rule.

              .
During my early years in Germany, my student hostel was maintained by the Anglican Church, so I had to attend some church sessions. There I got to know the black American pastor who made every effort to make me a Christian.
Most of them were nothing but heretics. They kept saying, “You want me to come into your heart and pray for you, etc.” I kept questioning why on earth they depended on God for everything in their life journey. If someone was cured of a terminal illness or passed an exam, they prayed for him like the deaf and blind. I think their beliefs are beyond the superstitions of the South Asian region. That’s why some Republicans feel compelled to vote for Trump again and again. Those are America’s blind beliefs.

Are you Zionist as well as Christian, or possibly you’ve joined Modi’s Hindutwa RSS? Why do you need all this death and destruction when you have an Omnipotent God that can end all this strife with a blink of his/her eye? “With God all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). My distant relative Mary Stuart was a personal friend of Nostradamus – he got more predictions right than the Biblical ones. There is no mention of Russia in any of the Bibles – Rosh just means chief in Hebrew. I await the arrival of the” Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse”

          LankaScot,

It is obvious that I am merely trying to prove to David that one cannot use Biblical predictions to justify what is happening in Gaza.

New Jerusalem is in Missouri, North America according to the Church of the Latter Day Saints. In fact,
“Explorers, colonists, and political and religious leaders have all described and identified America and the United States as the heavenly New Jerusalem of Revelation(Link is too long to paste, but it can be googled). So, New Jerusalem can be anywhere on the planet. It can even be on Mars in a 1,000 years time.

Jesus said that he came to save and convert the Jews. In the end, the Jews were not converted but the Gentiles. And all Christians are non-Jews (save maybe for a tiny percentage of Jews). “….. gentiles become Abraham’s sons themselves, …… gentiles-in-Christ are children of the promise, like Isaac.” (Gal 4:28).

LankaScot , No mention of Russia but Rev. 20,8 and specially Ezekiel 38, 15-16 shows Gog of Gog and Magog comes against Israel from far north. Ezek. 39 shows the defeat of those armies and their burial in Israel. If you keep reading, will see future restoration of Israel and why it will be so. Ezek.38,2 also shows Gog of the land of Magog, the prince of Rosh, Meshech and Tubal and the Lord says he is against them.

When I was a teenager a neighbour’s young servant girl got pregnant and insisted she had not been touched by anyone. The priest in the local church supported the girl and tried to reconcile the matter. “Don’t be hasty,” he cautioned homeowners and neighbourhood. “Hadn’t such an event taken place in the past?” Pious neighbours too began to wonder, Was this then another “Immaculate Conception”? A “Second Coming”? The homeowners would have nothing of it. They threw the girl out, using such terms as “vesi balli” and others more foul.

Months later the girl returned with an infant and her parents and confronted the priest. The crafty man hoisted up his robes and bolted, never to be seen nor heard of again.

Neighbourhoods were obviously ignorant and gullible when Emperor Constantine 1 in 325 CE called The Council of Nicaea [now İznik, Turkey].

    More I will not say.

Funny isn’t it when you pick and choose when to use simple logic. Try it when reading your bible.
Apart from that Sonali hitched a ride on my Time Machine and we both travelled to Nicea to defend Arius and try to steer the early Christians away from the Paulian polytheism. Unfortunately we thought the proceedings would be in Latin, but it was all in Greek, so we failed to make a difference. But the setting by the Ascanian Lake was very pleasant and we talked to Eusebius and other Arians about the future.

    Author:

“I have been deeply distressed by Israel’s military assault on the population of Gaza….”

This is the language of emotion and no serious writer on a serious issue would start his article this way. “[D]eeply distressed” belongs in a letter of condolence or an appreciation of a deceased person, not in serious writing.

He is, of course, not distressed by the atrocities committed by Hamas’ during their attack against Israel on 7 Oct, which he calls a “brave military operation,” which he elsewhere calls (contradictorily?) as an “aggression” by Hamas. He then further confuses things by calling Israel, too, as an “aggressor” in their response to Hamas’ attack.

Hamas’ atrocities included beheadings, mass rape of women, killing children in front of their parents and vice versa, burning of people, including children, alive, (allegedly) cutting off women’s breasts and shooting in the vagina, and taking civilians as hostages, some of whom at least have been sexually abused.

I have little sympathy for the Gazans except their little children and those who were opposed to Hamas. The majority of Gazans (and West Bankers) still support Hamas and they celebrated at the news of the Hamas’ attack on 7 Oct.

      Hello Leonard,
You are obviously not familiar with the lengths to which Israel goes to paint the Palestinians as sub-human. They even planted an ex-Israeli Intelligence Officer (Anat Schwartz) and her nephew (Adam Sella) in the New York Times to write an article called “Screams without Words” about the so-called systematic use of Rape as a weapon of war. They had no evidence. The story has been completely debunked by American (and others) Investigative journalists. https://theintercept.com/2024/02/28/new-york-times-anat-schwartz-october-7/
The same goes for the beheaded babies, children burned alive, babies hung on washing lines etc. All de-bunked – read the Israeli newspaper Haaretz and you may be shocked at what they print.
The killing of Civilians is a crime called Murder, Hamas did this on Oct 7th – they also abducted Civilians and Soldiers. But the Israelis had to show that Hamas (and by implication all Palestinians) were sub-human and animals. These are terms used by Senior Israeli Government Officials. Israeli Zionists have always wanted all of Palestine “From the River to the Sea”. I am quoting Netanyahu, not Hamas. Please don’t be so gullible, do some research and always remember Cui Bono.

I have seen enough stuff in the mainstream media and on YouTube to be satisfied that atrocities were indeed committed by Hamas on Oct 7.

I think you folks have all seen the video of Shani Louk, who was paraded through the streets of Gaza in the back of a pick up truck after being abducted from a music festival. She is semi naked and seemingly lifeless, and a Gazan is seen spitting at her as the truck passes by. (She died.) Here’s a link to a video to refresh your memory. If Hamas were callous and barbaric enough to do this in plain sight, then what must they have done in Israel?

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nAkSPgSprIE&rco=1

Months ago, international journalists were given a presentation in which Hamas atrocities were shown using Hamas’ own bodycam footage and footage captured by CCTV cameras in houses. Here’s the testimony of one such journalist:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EW0Atcdy38g&t=339s

Here’s the testimony of a released hostage girl about what she heard from a sexually abused fellow hostage:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyL8UTArbzA

“Hamas’ atrocities included beheadings, mass rape of women, killing children in front of their parents and vice versa, burning of people, including children,….”

Why do people continue to repeat Israeli lies about this ‘n that? Even the President of the US cited the “40 beheadings” without seeing any proof/evidence. And I, for one, very much doubt that Hamas stopped to engage in mass rape. etc. Their objective seems to have been to take as many hostages as they could to use in bargaining for the releasse of some of the many Palestinians locked up, without charge in Israeli jails. Including children!!! As for burning anyone, it seems that fires were caused by the bombing from Israeli planes. There has been quite a lot of investigation & challenging of these stories by independent US media., Leonard.

Hamas is the resistant arm of a long-suffering, oppressed people, a desperate people, who yearn to be secure in the home they have occupied for centuries. Their torturer, Israel, has not only enjoyed impunity for every lie, crime, massacre it has committed, but also has an early history of Zionist gangs – the Irgun, Haganah, Lehi, etc – that resorted to most of the crimes Hamas has been accused of.

Let me recommend a small “novel” for you to read — “Minor Detail” — based on the actual rape and killing of a young Bedouin woman by an Israel army unit in 1949. By Adania Shibli, a Palestinian woman, it won an award in Germany last year, which was to be presented to Shibli at The Frankfurt Book Fair, but the presentation was suddenly cancelled – “due to the war started by Hamas”. It’s a small book, just 100 pages. Another cancellation of the Palestinian voice.

All this moaning, wailing and lamentation by the author of this article and like-minded folk for the suffering and plight of the Gazans resulting from Israel’s legitimate response to Hamas’ atrocious aggressive act on Oct 7 is unnecessary because this tragedy could be brought to an immediate end if Hamas surrender to Israel and release the hostages. If the author really cares about the Gazans, that should be his position. You can’t eat your cake and have it. The Gazans themselves, if they had an ounce of sense should be calling for Hamas, who initiated this conflict by their unprovoked attack against Israel, to surrender and release the hostages. Why don’t they do that?

When Israel pushes Palestinians to the wall, it shouldn’t be surprised when Palestinian resistance groups rise up to attack it. Palestinians have a right to defend their land, right to defend their sovereignty and right to defend their dignity.

      Hello Leonard,
The Germans considered the the French Resistance during WW2 as being terrorists and would summarily execute them. They would also kill local residents “with the intention to shock and influence the population into desisting their aid to the maquis” (as the Resistance were called). Maybe during WW2 in France you would have joined the Vichy Government?
So for you Hamas has a choice – Surrender, give up your land to the Israelis and die, or fight the occupation and possibly die? The IDF even killed 3 Israeli hostages that were stripped down to a minimum of clothing, waving white flags and speaking Hebrew.
      Best regards

        LankaScot,

Did the French Resistance wear suicide jackets packed with C-4 (Hamas, LTTE) and blow up cafes full of German civilians? Had they done so, we may have a different opinion of them today. All terrorists on a suicide mission are the same, there is no need to differentiate.

          Hello Lester,
One of the earlier suicide bombings (1857) was carried out by the British defending the Magazine (Munitions) at Dehli. They were being attacked by thousands of Indians and knew that the situation was dire.
“Seeing that the situation was hopeless, Buckley and his comrades took the decision to blow up the arsenal, and consequently themselves, to save the vast quantities of arms and ammunition from falling into rebel hands. On being directed by the severely wounded Lt Willoughby, Conductor Buckley raised his hat as the signal and Conductor Scully took a lighted fuse into the Magazine causing it to ignite. The resulting explosion was the largest ever known and was heard 40 miles away in Meerut. The Magazine simply disintegrated and around a thousand mutineers were killed in the devastating blast” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Defence_of_the_Magazine_at_Delhi
          Don’t mess with the British!
          Best regards

The French resistance did commit “acts of terror” against the Nazis.
Our opinions are fully conditioned by the side someone was on.

        LS:
Comparisons can be odious. Are you serious in comparing the Israeli state to the Nazis? I am sorry, you have lost all credibility in my sight.

Do you forget that it was the Hamas who was the aggressor? Israel completely pulled out of the Gaza Strip in 2005 (which it had occupied from 1967), including all the troops and settlers, leaving the government in the hands of the PA, dominated by Fatah. From 2007 Hamas has been in control of Gaza as a virtual separate state. Instead of developing Gaza it is they are who are responsible for making Gaza hell on earth, spending a large part of the money they get in building an extensive network of tunnels and preparing to destroy Israel, who they think don’t have a right to exist. Israel left Gaza alone (nay, they helped Gazans in various ways) and attacked them only when they indulged in their favourite “hobby” of firing rockets indiscriminately into Israel from time to time. On Oct 7 they crossed a line and Israel now has no option but to totally eliminate Hamas, who have vowed to repeat Oct 7 “again and again” if possible.

“Are you serious in comparing the Israeli state to the Nazis?”
The emerging evidence is that the Israeli state is far worse than the Nazis.

The United States is yet to condemn Israel’s heinous humanitarian convoy massacre on Al-Rashid Street at the Al Nabulsi roundabout in Gaza. As UNRWA, OCHA or any other UN agency was not involved in that humanitarian convoy, it is pretty obvious that the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) had used the humanitarian convoy to “lure and kill” starving Palestinians en masse who came to get flour bags. The IDF’s direct firing at the aid seekers has so far killed 116 and wounded over 800. The Biden administration is yet to call for an investigation on the “Flour Massacre”. If the Biden administration has forgotten, “shoot on sight” orders are prohibited under international human rights law. The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the United States is a party, states: “No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his life.” (Source: hrw.org)

With the iron-clad backing of the US, Israel has so far killed 30,320 starving Palestinians and wounded 71,533. Then there are plans to commit a holocaust in Rafah, too.
After inhumanely vetoing three UNSC resolutions that called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, now the Biden administration passes the ball to Hamas to get Israel agree to a pause-fire for 6 weeks and a rapid flow of humanitarian aid. What a pathetic administration! Hamas should ask the US hostage negotiators what will happen after 6 weeks. Israel has already done a post-Ramadan preview by firing at a tent in Rafah and killing 11 of its occupants. The United States, which is party to Israel’s genocide in Gaza, should tell the world whether it has approved Israel’s post-Ramadan holocaust in Rafah tent city.
Under international Humanitarian Law, over 2.2 million starving Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip have a right to basic humanitarian aid. As Israel’s ironclad backer, it is the United States’ responsibility to facilitate unimpeded passage of humanitarian aid to Palestinians. Expecting Hamas to bargain with Israel for humanitarian aid shows the utter weakness of the Biden administration.

The media all over the world is shouting out that the US is air dropping food for the Ghazans. Pictures too. The intention obviously is to come out as the good guys. Now that world opinion is turning against the Israeli killers and their US and UK sponsors. So now the US is wanting to show a good face: The guys mediating peace; now air dropping food. Angels.

Hamas will do well to steer clear off these hypocrites. They are murderers: Viet Nam, Cambodia, Syria, Libys, Iraq, Afganistan. The list is endless.

From blocking humanitarian aid trucks on land to mobilizing hostage families to protest on the aid convoy designated routes, and to directly firing into crowds of aid seekers, Israel has used every disgraceful tactic to obstruct Palestinians getting essential humanitarian aid. At a time like that, Jordan and the US military have conducted humanitarian aid airdrops into the Gaza Strip. Although the move was just a drop in the ocean, chaotic, complicated and belated, the decision taken by the US President to airdrop 38,000 ready-to-eat meals in the opening stage of the emergency humanitarian aid to Palestinians is highly commendable.
At a saddening time when over 2.2 million people are facing famine in the Gaza Strip and children are dying from starvation, I hope more countries will join Jordan and the US to increase the number of humanitarian aid airdrops in the coming days.
Receiving food aid and distributing them is always a sensitive and challenging task. Therefore, it is upto the aid groups operating in the Gaza Strip and Palestinians themselves to work on a mechanism to ensure an equitable allocation of air dropped food to all starving families.

Everyone should listen to the excellent lecture by Pankaj Mishra hosted on the London Review of Books (LRB) site. Both the video of the lecture and the essay are available there.

The US Vice President Kamala Harris says there should be an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. She may have forgotten that it was her country that vetoed three UNSC resolutions that called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. The solution is easy. Stop vetoing UNSC resolutions and let the UNSC do its job.
