Gaza In End Times

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Whether the victims of October 7th in Israel or the ongoing attack on Gaza, all the victims of dehumanisation, how do we resist?” ~ Jonathan Glazer, director of The Zone of Interest (Oscar acceptance speech)

The Pali Canon has the original tale, but it’s the version in the commentaries we know. In both stories, she is Kisa Gotami, a thin girl who marries young. Then comes the divergence. In the story we know she loses her baby to illness, refuses to accept his death, and rushes from healer to healer, cradling the dead body, seeking life. The Buddha is her final refuge. He tells her to bring a mustard seed from a house into which death hasn’t entered. She walks the length and breadth of the city. In every house someone has died, sometime.

In Gaza, most families have suffered a violent death in the last five months. According to a March survey by the Palestinian Centre for Survey Research, 60% of Gazans have lost at least one family member since Israeli offensive began. More than 32,142 reported deaths as I write. 70% of the victims are women and children.

This spectacle of blood, this daily dose of death and destruction visited on a captive population, is creating a sea-change in global opinion – against Israel. Mr. Netanyahu has become an embarrassment, even to those politicians who bear-hugged him in the immediate aftermath of Hamas’ murderous attack and continued to embrace him as the Israeli military machine killed 1000, 5000, even 10,000 Gazan children. The number of murdered children is now 13,430 – that is in under six months. How many more children would be killed if this war continues for another month, six months, a year? The calculations are easy to make but harder to swallow, even for many American politicians.

So Chuck Schumer, the staunchly pro-Israel majority leader of the US senate, warned, “Israel cannot survive if it becomes a pariah.” And Nancy Pelosi, former American speaker and another died-in-the-wool Israeli-supporter, agreed. The nakedness of the war has become unaffordable for many of Israel’s international enablers. They prefer it to be veiled. (Not Donald Trump though. His son-in-law Jared Kushner enthused about the ‘very valuable’ waterfront properties in Gaza during a February discussion in Harvard about the Middle East).

Some Israelis are finally becoming aware of the cost of war, to themselves. Bibi – stop killing Israel, read a giant banner carried by Israeli protestors demonstrating outside prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s private home. The protestors want Mr. Netanyahu to step down and hold early elections (elections are due only in 2026). He may not survive an immediate election but Israel’s hard right will, those extremists who want to starve Gazans to death or dream of a second Nakba or the Third Temple on the land Al Aqsa mosque stands today. Mr. Netanyahu might not be popular, but the war is. Still. Most of those who protest against Mr. Netanyahu don’t see the genocide next door, the dying babies, the wailing parents. Only the growing international opprobrium resulting from that carnage.

That opprobrium will increase, especially with mass starvation looming in Gaza, the intended outcome of Israeli policies. Last week, British foreign secretary David Cameron publicly criticised Israel for obstructing international aid to starving and sick Gazans. Aid cannot get in due to “arbitrary denials by the government of Israel and lengthy clearance procedures, including multiple screenings and narrow opening windows in daylight hours.”

His surprise is surprising because this is what Israel said it will do before launching its offensive. The country’s political and military leaders called Gazans human animals and talked about starving them to death in the crudest terms. They are walking that talk now.

In Sri Lanka, the Rajapaksas named the Fourth Eelam War a Humanitarian Operation with zero-civilian casualties. President Mahinda Rajapaksa even said that Lankan soldiers fought this ‘humanitarian operation’ with the UN Declaration of Human Rights in one hand and a rice packet for refugees over one shoulder, their hearts full of love for civilian Tamils. The Rajapaksas had to sugar-coat the bloody truth because they feared international reaction. Without that concern, the final offensive would have claimed many more civilian lives.

After the October 7th murderous attack by Hamas, Israel got a blank cheque from the West, and therefore saw no need either for restraint or for concealment. “Going after Hamas is legitimate; obliterating vast swathes of Gaza is not. Using proportionate force is legal; but collective punishment and forced movement of civilians is not,” former UK foreign secretary Ben Wallace recently pointed out. But that distinction was not made clear to Israel. The West’s unconditional support enabled genocide. It is a warning of how unliveable this world would become if every country is free to wage its wars in whatever way it wants.

Universal extremism

In January 2024, Britain’s chief rabbi Ephraim Mirvis made a speech endorsing Israel’s war against Gaza. “We can be proud of the state of Israel, what it represents…what Israel is doing is the most outstanding thing a decent responsible country can do for its citizens.”

In January 2024, Palestinian death toll surpassed 25000. In January 2024, the number of dead Palestinian children was almost 10,000. In January 2024, there was an ‘acute food shortage’ in Gaza, according to UN; “…the highest share of people facing high levels of acute food insecurity (ever recorded) for any given area or country.” The UN secretary general called the situation ‘heart breaking’.

Calling such horrors ‘outstanding’ and their perpetrators ‘decent’ and ‘responsible’ is reminiscent of the corrupting and poisonous language of Nazism. Viktor Klemperer, professor of French Literature and Holocaust-survivor, in his eponymous book named that language LTI – Lingua Tertii Imperii – the Language of the Third Reich. “If someone replaces the words ‘heroic’ and ‘virtuous’ with ‘fanatical’ for long enough, he will come to believe that a fanatic really is a virtuous hero; and that no one can be a hero without fanaticism. The Third Right did not invent the words ‘fanatic’ and ‘fanaticism’; it just changed their value…” (The Language of the Third Reich).

The Rajapaksas, unknowingly, emulated this model when they replaced war with ‘humanitarian offensive’, soldier with ‘war-hero’, and open prison camps with ‘welfare villages’. This linguistic inversion continues to this day, and is practiced even by those vehemently opposed to the Rajapaksas. In the parlance of Lankan Opposition, soldiers are still war-heroes, the war is still a humanitarian operation, and Tamil civilian deaths are the perennial unmentionable, as if zero-civilian casualties were the reality rather than Rajapaksa myth. As Professor Klemperer said, we have imbibed so many tiny drops of verbal arsenic that our body is saturated with poison and we have become immune to it. We don’t even notice what we are saying when we say humanitarian operation or war hero; or when we valorise retired military personnel without mentioning Tamil civilian casualties. Like the chief rabbi of UK, who takes as irrefutable fact, the rightness of Israel state in its treatment of Palestinians, be it in Gaza, West Bank or elsewhere. His approach to enemy deaths is reminiscent of the monks of Mahawamsa, who assured a conscience-stricken King Dutugemunu that he did no wrong in war since the enemy dead were non-Buddhists and thus ‘beasts’.

Jews, Slavs, and Gypsies were Untermenschen not just to the Nazis but also to many a German. The Palestinians are Untermenschen not just to Zionists but also to many an Israeli or non-Israeli Jew. Dehumanisation is the road to carnage, anywhere, anytime. Jonathan Glazer’s Zone of Interest which won the award for Best International Film at the Oscars is about the normal, ordinary life of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz, lived within olfactory-distance of the death camp’s massive crematoria. According to Mr. Glazer the movie “looks into the dark corners of human capacity… I think what is inside this film is what we do to each other as human beings. We see others as lesser than ourselves, different from ourselves. Somehow, step by step, that leads to atrocity.”

Mr. Glazer, a Jew, was excoriated for anti-Semitism. Extremism owns Israel now; Palestine too; that stark divide which permits neither nuance nor dissent. Yet, as historian Geoffrey Levin points out in his new book, Our Palestinian Question, opposing Zionism and Israel on the issue of Palestinian rights was not uncommon either in Israel or the US for decades. He writes how the state of Israel worked systematically to silence and cancel dissenting Jews, like journalist William Zukerman, once a prominent voice among progressive American Jews. That erasure was so successful there’s not even a Wikipedia page about him

Mr. Glazer argues that the ending of this relative openness can be largely attributed to a pop-culture phenomenon, Leon Uris’s Exodus. The bestselling book was turned into a blockbuster Hollywood movie starring Paul Newman. In his opinion the movie was the reason America really fell in love with Israel.

Now a real-life movie is making America fall a little bit out of love with Israel. A war in which the main victims are not armed combatants but unarmed women and children is not the best advertisement for any country. The Gaza war, as Brazilian President Lula said, is not “…a war of soldiers against soldiers. It’s a war between a highly prepared army and women and children.” And the lacerating images of those pitiful deaths cannot be hidden from the public gaze in this age of social media. The growing public disenchantment with Israel, and the mounting protests, is forcing many American, British, and European politicians to rethink their unconditional support for Israel’s genocidal war.

Sacrificial (red) cows?

Writing from Selma, Alabama, in March 1965, Elizabeth Hardwick, writer and co-founder of the New York Review of Books, observed that the singular nature of Martin Luther King’s protest and “the quality and the extent of his success sprang from a soil of religion…” Dr King and his white racist opponents drew their inspiration and justification from the same Bible. The paradox of religion is its capacity to seed both movingly good and repulsively evil. In his book, The End of Enlightenment, historian Richard Whatmore writes that ‘enthusiasm’ understood as fanaticism was anathema to many Enlightenment thinkers. What mattered was not what you believed but how you believed it, an understandable consideration when memories of devastating internecine wars between Christians were still fresh.

Whether a religion seeds a Martin Luther King or a Joseph Kony (and the Lord’s Resistance Army) depends not so much on what religion you believe in but how you believe in it. And for a fanatic of any religion, even the annihilation of a large swathe of humankind is an acceptable sacrifice.

In one of its propaganda videos, Hamas claimed that it launched the October 7th attack to save the Al Aqsa mosque (a claim that doesn’t dovetail with the gruesome targeting of civilians) from destruction. Some Orthodox Jews are planning to sacrifice a red cow as a prelude to repossessing the Temple of the Mount, Hamas warned.

If Hamas actually wanted to save the Al Aqsa mosque, it should have targeted the West Bank settlement housing three red heifers and not Kibbutzim in Israel peopled mostly by non-Orthodox progressive Jews. For the red cows do exist in reality, born in Texas and airlifted at enormous cost to Israel and being held in West Bank until the time comes.

The First Temple of Judaism was destroyed by Babylonian armies and the Second Temple by Roman legions. Building the Third Temple has been the dream of many Jews for millennia. In the meantime, an Umayyad Caliph built the Al Aqsa mosque on the empty land. According to media reports, some right-wing ultra-Orthodox Jews are actually planning to demolish Al Aqsa mosque and build the ‘Third Temple’ there. They believe that sacrificing an unblemished red heifer who is exactly three years old on the Mount of Olives will be necessary to win divine approval for this project.

An Israeli organisation, The Temple Institute, with the support of some evangelical Christian groups in the US, is now keeping the three red cows in an undisclosed location in West Bank. An altar is reportedly being constructed. The Temple Institute is said to be readying to carry out the sacrifice sometime this year, possibly before Passover which falls on April 22nd, perhaps as early as the Easter weekend, on March 29th, which is the Sabbath of the Red Heifer. The sacrifice and the resultant ash-and-water mixture are believed to be capable of purifying all of Israel of ritual impurities and allow Jews to enter the Temple of the Mount.

Will there be an Ayodhya in Jerusalem?

The Al Aqsa mosque is the third holiest site in Islam. Any mob attack on it could open floodgates of violence in Middle East and beyond. No Islamic leader will be able to withstand the resulting fury in their streets.

Project Red Cow is no secret. Israeli leaders cannot be unaware of the danger of the situation getting out of hand, of Israel-Palestine conflict spiralling over into a Jewish-Islamic war, as Hamas would dearly desire. Yet the circus of insanity is being allowed to proceed. Even if sanity dawns at the eleventh hour and serious steps are taken to stop the sacrifice, this will not be the end. For fanaticism is a sickness of the mind. And extremism which begins with destruction often ends up with self-destruction.

October 7, 2023, is a day we keep hearing repeatedly. It’s the day Hamas fighters stormed Israeli communities and killed some 1,139 Israelis and seized about 240 as captives.
We don’t know about the days, weeks and months prior to Oct 7. Or do we?
Statistics from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), says that between 2008 and 2023, 6,407 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli troops and settlers. Israeli deaths in the same period, because of Palestinian violence, numbered 308.
Palestinian injured during those years numbered 152,560. Israelis injured numbered 6,307.
That disproportion and its continuation undoubtedly led to the Hamas assault.
Another thing: these days the word Antisemitism has been given the effect of a lobbed grenade.
But how many know that the Semitic people or Semites are Arabs, Jews, Akkadians, and Phoenicians. That’s the history this old timer was taught in school.
Those people occupied the Levant, an ancient geographical area that today also consists of Palestine, which the Jews call Israel.
So “antisemitism” should include the Palestinians too. Or has history been rewritten.

An Australian Aboriginal lady has provided background to what’s going on between Israelis and Palestinians.
Our own commentators can benefit from what she says.
Dr. Lawungkurr says: “Until relatively recently the population of what is now called Israel was mostly Arab. Jews had been leaving Palestine for other countries for over 700 years (United Nations, 2021) mostly through voluntary migration (Gruen, 2009).
“In 1881 the population was 457,000, of which 400,000 were Muslims and 13-20,000 Jewish. The persecution of 8 million Jews in Eastern Europe (Rogall, 2014) reversed the diaspora, and led to the formation of Zionism, a movement supporting a homeland in Palestine.
“To the Zionists there were no ‘civilized’ Palestinians, or farmers ‘improving’ the land (Rogall 2013). Moshe Smilansky, a Zionist leader wrote in 1914: “We must not forget that we are dealing here with a semi-savage people’ (Amit & Levit, 2011). Such beliefs still exist.
“As more Jews moved to Palestine, Arabs who constituted over 90 per cent of the population were dispossessed of their land. By 1930, 30 per cent were landless, while 80 per cent of the rest didn’t have land to meet their needs.

“After World War II sympathy swung towards the Jewish people, and played ‘a significant role’ in the 1948 recognition of a Jewish state (Holocaust Encyclopaedia). In that year the first Nakba (catastrophe) occurred; over half a million Arabs were expelled by Israeli armed forces (Slater, 2020) or fled to neighbouring countries; villages were destroyed and wells poisoned to prevent their return (Morris & Kedar, 2022).
“Oppression of Arabs continues unabated, and has been called genocide (Jewish Voice for Peace). The murder of 1300 Jews by Hamas has also been called a genocide (Winer, The Times of Israel, 15 Oct. 2023). So, let’s look at the figures. Civilian casualties since 2008 (not counting recent events) are: Palestinian fatalities, 6407; Israeli, 308; Palestinian injuries 152,560, Israeli injuries 6,307 (OCHA, UN).
“That Palestinians feel they have ‘nothing left to lose’, means continuing violence (Gruen, The Conversation, Oct. 14, 2023). Consequently, they will continue to suffer, as will the Jewish people.”

Thank you Tissaranee for giving us the details of the horrors the Israelis have inflicted upon the Palestinian people. Those 3 red heifers ready for sacrifice by the Israelis is a barbaric delusion towards the ancient times of justification towards theft and violence. From an Abrahamic religious point of view, the Palestinians being of Levantine blood (the blood of the ancient Jews now turned Muslim), own the rights to the land; their mosque in Gaza, the ultimate reunification of God (aka Allah) with man. It would be a travesty to God to have a vestige of his people that is not truly of his own because of 75% and more of European mixing, set up their archaic temple there, that does not belong to the journey of God with Man throughout the ages.

But comparing Sri Lanka to the M.E. situation makes it sound like there have been other situations like this throughout history, world over. Never in the history of the earth has such horrors been inflicted upon a people whose lands have been stolen from right under them. You are belittling the M.E. situation by comparing the two wars. Our Rajapaksas only wanted to create a unified state of both races. They did not want to drive out the Tamils, but unify them with the Sinhalese – both having lived on the land for thousand of years. They merely wants a few more Sinhalese to live up North as the Tamils are living down south. But it is agreed that the wording used by Rajapaksas to justify the ending of the war have parallels to the language of the Third Reich.

Many Jews in America are against the Israeli occupation of Palestine. It would be much cheaper for the US to open up immigration to the Israelis who desperately want to migrate out of that place. They only went there because there was no other place for them to go. And there is plenty of land here. Those brilliant Jews (of mostly European blood) will fit in well here, and lend their expertise to developing similar landscapes as in Israel, like the Mojave and Arizona deserts.

It’s interesting that the author only focuses on Rajapakse and the so-called “end” of the war. According to LTTE propaganda, most of the so-called “war crimes” occurred during the time of CBK, particularly after the re-capture of Jaffna. Even if we consider 2009, why is there is no mention of Sarath Fonseka? That guy was in charge of day-to-day operations while Gothabaya was merely coordinating from Colombo.

If the author was objective, she would ask what kind of deal Ranil made with the Rajapakses to retain his current and perhaps future position. As I understand, Ranil could arrest the Rajapakses using similar provisions of “fraud and corruption” that were applied to the detainment of Fonseka. So why hasn’t Ranil, at the very least, formed a Special Commission to investigate Rajapakse fraud and corruption? Ranil is not dumb, he knows that the military and a certain segment of the population still support Mahinda and to a smaller extent, Gothabaya. Ranil is playing a good game, getting IMF money while his accomplices, the Rajapakses, pave the way for the next candidate of their choice.

Day to day operations are based on instructions from the higher commands.

Seems obvious that the author chose not to provide an exhaustive list but instead mention only the high command responsible for giving the green light to commit the crimes.

The author hasn’t mentioned Shavendra Silva, Wasantha Karannagoda, and the others either. Sarath Fonseka hasn’t been exonerated by any means.

      • 3
        5

No, it was Fonseka who was in charge of day to day operations. Gothabaya was responsible for overseeing military operations, defense policy formulation, administration and logistics, security and intelligence, and civil-military coordination.

        • 6
          2

Were the day to day activities independent of military operation directives from higher commands? Army commander Sarath Fonseka wasn’t there on his own whim, doing as he pleased, was he?

Sounds like a pre-election propaganda freshly on the agenda of the pro-Rajapaksa faction!

Shift the entire blame to the Sarath Fonseka and exonerate Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the mad man who also, as per police reports, ran a top secret death squad which targeted journalists and dissidents.

Also you are mum on the involvement of the then Major General of the Army, Shavendra Silva. Does that name ring bell? Perhaps not because he won’t be running for the presidency. Heard of U.S. sanctions against Shavendra Silva?

Gotha could have overruled Fonseka at any time, but that was not usually the case. Fonseka was the one calling the shots.

I also believe Fonseka made the decision to execute those holding white flags. Gotha is not the vengeful type; he tried to rehabilitate around 10K LTTE cadres after the war, offering them education and other facilities. Some of those cadres are probably on CT… Gotha is a good soldier, but he is also highly educated. He didn’t kill that journalist LW, remember, LW lost his defamation case in court. How do we know LW wasn’t about to expose Danuna Tillakaratne for fraud? Do you know that Anoma Fonseka was caught with $90K USD in a locker? SF was paying Sunday Leader good money (received from NGO’s) to defame the Rajapakses. When this gig was up, editor Jansz claimed asylum in the USA.

While I can’t vouch for Gota’s innocence in general, I’m pretty sure Fonseka isn’t without any skeletons in his cupboard. It looks like they (Fonseka and Rajapaksas) fell out over something and Fonseka since then has been trying to implicate Gota and the Rajapaksas in various alleged wrong doings. There were also rumours that the US was trying to seize power in SL through Gota, Fonseka and Dayan Jayathilaka trio. The first two being the heroes that conducted a winning war and the last being the one who provided srtategic cover internationally. If true the US may have found the hard way that blood is thicker than water, especially Rajapaksa blood. You could see that Gota is an outlier in his own Rajapaksa camp. Even now Basil is trying to distance himself from Gota. I’m sure plenty may have gone on and still going on without public being aware.

Nathan, You are realistic. Hamas terror was brought forth from Gaza like we had LTTE terror attacks in trains as well as in many places in the south of our nation. We lived through two rounds of JVP terror. In 2009 Army general Sarath Fonseka brought an end to northern terror. Now life goes on with financial terror, robbery and murder. Evil living always cause casualties. Hamas terror from Philistin invasion of Gaza is different in two aspects. Their IS agenda is to create a caliphate with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkamenistan,

contd…. Create caliphate with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkemenistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Iran with Persian shia. The second agenda of Hamas is to drive Israel into the sea and that will never happen as the creator God Jehovah promised the land between the two rivers Nile and Euphrates to belong to his descendants with Sarah through Isaac and Jacob (name changed to Israel) Gal. 4,30 says son of slave Hagar (Ishmael Gen.16,3) shall not inherit with the Son of free woman Sarah. Amos 9,15 with many other sciptures confirms that Israel will never be pulled up from the land God gave them. David,

Palestinians are the descendants of Judah (the 4th son of Issac and Leah). They are of the same blood as Jesus. Being Muslim, they are not idol worshipers.
“…..90 percent of all Palestinians are descended from Jews who remained in Israel after the destruction of Second Temple 2,000 years ago, but were forced to convert to Islam.”

rtf, Palestinians may have jewish blood but the issue at hand is whether they have accepted the jewish messiah Jesus to be redeemed from their sins and be in right standing with God. The blood of Jesus the son of God was sinless from the virgin birth onwards and hence the covenant exchange with man was possible.

                      David,

When The Rapture arrives, Muslims will welcome Christ as the great prophet who will be seated at the right hand of God (Allah). Christians will welcome Christ as the Son of God. Jews won’t accept him at all as they will be still waiting for their own Messiah to come for the very first time.

As Palestinians are of the blood of Judah, one can conclude that they are the promised people who will welcome Christ as in the Revelations. They will be resettled in the land God promised to them. The Koran is the New Testament of the Torah and Talmud.

You may be right t a point about Hamas ‘terror’ and LTTE ‘terror’.
Hamas was no terrorist organization by any standard if compared with the sustained acts of the LTTE.
But you conveniently omit in both cases the terror that gave led to what you call Hamas terror and LTTE terror.
I suppose that that is an Evangelical Christian sense of justice ad fair play.

        Hello DTG,
Hamas is fundamentally opposed to ISIL/ISIIS. When did Hamas say it wanted to create a Caliphate with Afghanistan, Pakistan and Turkmenistan? Please stop spreading Israeli “Hasbara” (lying propaganda).
I once met the Canon of Birmingham Cathedral (who had recently attended a meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury). During my time speaking to him (with my friend who was an Anglican), I ascertained that the Church of England attitude to Revelations and other Apocalyptic writings was that much of what was written was mainly symbolic and not to be taken as predictions of the future.
My friend was on tenterhooks in case I mentioned that I was an Atheist. As I said to him later, I was there to admire the Architecture and how well the Canon looked after the Cathedral and the visitors to it. If you are welcomed into a man’s house you shouldn’t give offence to him. And apart from that the Canon was an intelligent man quite capable of recognising my Historical interests and beliefs (or lack of).
So I take it that you are not an Anglican?
        Best regards

LankaScot, Not glad that you are an atheist, ignoring your creator. Anglican is just one set of believers. Apocalyptic books are symbolic meant to reveal the future of believers who understand quite a lot of the revelations contained there given by the resurrected Christ to John his beloved disciple to illustrate the events of the future sometimes in picture form. If you read the book of Revelation with it’s 7 blessings, you will definitely not remain an atheist. John was exiled and alone in Patmos island and understood that God was ruling in human history as he himself had lovingly created human beings to become his family. He does not want humans to follow the lies of satan and go to hell with satan away from God.

            Hello DTG,
I see that like some other CT commentators (who shall be nameless) you don’t answer direct questions. Instead you use obfuscatory references to the Bible.
I read revelations on a number of occasions, first at the age of 6, as I was determined to read the whole bible. Of course I did not understand much of the references, but I did remember the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (the pale horse last). Later on at the Academy I re-read it. By this time (aged 14) I knew all about Psychedelic drugs and decided that John (the witness, not a Disciple) had tried them in Biblical times- here is an example – Jesus has white hair, eyes of fire, feet of brass, and has a sword sticking out of his mouth.1.13-16. The RE teacher did not agree with my interpretation and said that Revelations should be treated as symbolic – but was silent when I asked “symbolic of what”. Here is another – 12.3 “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”
I was an Atheist then and still am.
            Best regards

There is a lot of talk about children being killed in Israel’s current war with Hamas, this article is being no exception, and I thought it apposite to reproduce the following quotes attributed to Golda Meir:

“When peace comes we will perhaps in time be able to forgive the Arabs for killing our sons, but it will be harder for us to forgive them for having forced us to kill their sons.”

“Peace will come when the Arabs will love their children more than they hate us.”

Both the above quotes are “disputed” according to website “Wikiquote,” but evenif apocryphal the second of the two quotes is an astute observation.

      Who killed whom since 1948?
Glib utterances by a Zionist head of state are easy quotes to repeat, but truth is something else.

        SJ:
        “Who killed whom since 1948?”

Both Israelis and Palestinians have been killing one another since and before 1948. The important question is, Who started the killing?

To begin with, the present conflict between Israel and Hamas was initiated by Hamas, an undisputed fact. The latter killed first and Israel has been responding.

Only one day after the UN voted to partition the British Mandate of Palestine into two states (29 Nov 1947), it was the Arabs who started the clashes with their ambush of a bus carrying Jewish passengers destined to Jerusalem (Nov 30). This was even before the Israeli Declaration of Independence in May 1948.

The oft-cited attack on the Arab village of Deir Yassin took place afterwards (April 1948). Days later, Arab forces attacked a Jewish convoy headed for a hospital, killing 78.

        (Source: Encyclopedia Britannica).

        Continued.

        • 1
          5

          Continued from above comment.

Even before 1947/48, it was Arabs who always killed Jews first (for example in 1929, when the Jews were accused of trying to seize control of the al-Aqsa Mosque).

          1948 Arab-Israeli war–who started it?

The Six-Day War of 1967 was a preemptive strike by Israel against certain Arab states.

In the 1973 Yom Kippur war, the Arab states attacked Israel first.

In addition, Palestinian terror groups have been attacking Israel for decades–they still do–and Israel have killed only in response. Even in the West Bank all killings of Palestinians would stop immediately if they ceased resisting Israel. (Killings of Palestinians by West Bank Israeli settlers is another issue.)

The “truth is something else” indeed.

          4

Leonard Jayawardena, If all these readers who cannot sort out why the Israelis and Palestinians are killing one another, you have uttered the most important question “Who started the killing” Israelis have always defended themselves when attacked while in their own land, specially when around the temple mount and near the mount of olives. This self defence is now becoming more intensive and will lead to the final three end time wars. Even Russian orthodox christian Putin will invade Israel with the wars of Gog and Magog.

Do you have any idea of how the land was seized before 1948 and with whose connivance?
Since founding, Israel used state violence as well as violence by goons to kill and drive away Palestinians.
Palestinians hit back after years of harassment, that too was not on ordinary Jews but on selected targets.
Look at the data before indulging in equations.
Even the Nazis used records of Jewish mischief to justify their crimes. Israel has now donned the mantle of the Third Reich.

            SJ:
“Palestinians hit back after years of harassment, that too was not on ordinary Jews but on selected targets.”

I see no point in continuing a discussion with some one who makes a statement such as this. Out of about 1,200 killed by Hamas in the Oct 7 attack, about 70% were civilians and they were deliberately targeted. All the evidence is out there and any fool can see that.
Again, when Hamas fires rockets from Gaza to Israel from time to time, are they on “selected targets”?

Absolutely no point in continuing a discussion with some one who is evidently living under a rock and has willfully closed his eyes and ears to facts and truth to boot.

By the way, have you heard the expression “useful idiot”?

              Hello Leonard,
Colonist aggressors have many times in the past called the resistance “terrorists” or like-minded terms. Edward 1st of England called William Wallace an outlaw and guilty of High Treason. The British called the Indians “Mutineers” in the 1857 “1st War of Independence “.
People under occupation have the right to resist under International Law. Gaza is under occupation, Hamas committed War Crimes in their October attack. That does not excuse the Genocide on the Palestinian people. Israel and its backers are now Pariahs in the eyes of most countries especially amongst the younger generations. I may be one of the “useful idiots”, but I have been one since the Israelis (with the help of the US, UK and others) 1967 theft of Palestinian, Jordanian and Egyptian lands.

Even if the quotes are denied as not her ones, Golda Meir was the truly elected first female leader of a world country. That tells her ability to win the misogynic nations (like Sadampi, who used Sri MaO as servant of tyrants) ditch their false assumption that a female can’t have leadership qualities. Vasanthi only used the UOJ letter heads to bully the teachers and students to save the Old Rowdy King from UNHRC. It is the paramilitary, Stalin’s boot lickers oppose decent, talented leaders.
Just because Netanyahu arbitrarily bomb Palestinians, just like Old Rowdy King did, it doesn’t honor the Jihadis’ who went to Russia and killed 143 concert watchers in Russia, in the same style they did it in Israel. So, Chechenia is not the one, but the best is yet to come for the Jihadis from the Mad Dog Bachan, Putin. We will watch how this loony Sadampi reacts for President Putin wiping outs of Jihadists. President Putin’s supported Palestine only for want to be an anti-America activist. Once again the Jihadists shot and bombed a music concert. They claim females as slaves or sinful births and Muslim is blasphemy. This is a serious danger to the free culture of the human race. Sadampi has similar concepts, he explained he was hooting Dr. Thiyagalingam’s application was being reviewed because “a Diaspora will bring the Diasporic culture to JOU”.

Ponny is already barred from the few countries he is entering from. As you said, he was within the highest few animals conducting the war. Chandrika cannot be labeled as personally directed Genocides from the very start, unlike the Rowdy Royals or Batalanda Evil did for JVP victims. There are many burial yards in the North in the name of Chandika’s administration. There are exclusive burial yards Rapist army used for their rape victims and their relatives to wipe the history off. Yet It is difficult to directly point out to Chandrika that she launched the wild beast rapist army on the innocent Tamil population, beyond war with LTTE. But after the LTTE reached Kaithatdi, she was involved in using thermobaric bombs and other mass murdering weapons. All will come to light when an investigation comes out. It is not black and white like Palestine where the media cannot be fully controlled, as was in Langkang. The Israeli army is using its ammunition of its own or what America, Britain, France supplied. But Sinhala army used were mainly brought from China, Russia, North Korea, Iran and mainly from Israel.… with 40% commission added. Anybody who opposed these commission-making war machines were simply wiped out. Media unsafety was kept 174th out of 179 countries surveyed.

Palestinians are not devastated by Israeli Armies’ rapes, looting, Thalikodi Aruppu, enslaving in camps, using as mules drug smuggling from Jaffna to south, using as hitmen, (as in Judge Manikavaskar’s murder attempt),……….. Israeli Army is not using Muslims and Tamil Paramilitary in order to torture the captured victims. In the deteriorated Langkang culture, prostitution and narcotic sales are about to be legalized. But many Israelis do not touch even Alcohol, but the Langkang Buddhist government label the Halal, officially). You know Sinhala Buddhism has turned the Sinhala Buddhists into below wild beast animals, so they want to call them only as proud Sinha Lay species. They willingly describe them as animals, born to a lion. It was UNHRC High Commissioner Prince Zeid who forced Yahapalanaya’s Paranagama Commission using Rapist army to spies on lonely, or mothers leading households in Vanni because those women were used by these spies for their whims. You can safely use these Vanni houses which were able to from the spies and paramilitary abuse as the example “no houses without death” in the story the bombastic writer Tisaranee Gunasekara used in her essay, there is no house in that area, once, was left in peace for years by the rapist army.

After winning the war with Genocide and 165,000 Tamil life lost, every two of these innocents in Vanni were monitored by one AK 47 carrying a rapist, Army. Never was in the past and never will be in the future an army occupied with people was going to be guards like that. The filthy Lankawe is only a hell to live in, even for decent Sinhalese.
There is accusation of raping in the Palestinian – Israeli war. But the accusation is on Hamas, and it was the hostage were the rape victim to not the other way around as it was in SinhaLE Lankawe. On normal days, Israel is rated as one of the best countries to live in. America, India, EU, Eastern Tigers all buy technology from Israel. Bending law started in Langkang as soon as Britain left. First correction was the Indian Pakistani citizenship act of the same year Langkang had freedom. Latest is Deal Dasa’s juvenile rape victims’ rights. For the first time, I believe, PM Netaniyaku played a game with justice, and we have to see Israelis acceptance of that in the coming election.

Tholkappiyar separated the two languages of Tamil in his grammar book, 2500 years ago. He labeled the deteriorating side as Kodum Tamil. He and Agastya invented the writing codes and stabilized the sound system for the proper side language. The Tamils who were separated by sea from Tamil Nadu are still able to maintain the Classical language which Agastya and Tholkappiyar protected with sound coding. That means, if Eelam Tamils were ever in India, it was well before Tholkappiyar separated the languages.

This is why I have been telling the Demulo Modayas not to partner firing loose Canon Tisaranee Gunasekera in comparing Palestine to Tamil Eelam. Further Tamils never left their land unlike Jews. The distance between the Eelam and Palestine is the distance between the Sun and the Earth. But the Dumelo Modaya colleagues sheepishly go on to prove that they too are freedom fighters like M. A. Sumanthiran.

Is the US genuinely against Israel’s impending military operation in Rafah, the so-called safe zone, where 1.4 million Palestinians are taking shelter? I highly doubt it. This is a collection of US narratives on the Rafah holocaust planned by Israel.
    1. The US directed Israel to come up with a potential plan to evacuate civilians from Rafah before a major military operation in that city.
    2. Then, as if woken from a deep slumber, the US decided to parachute aid airdrops to the Palestinians in Gaza.
    3. Then, the Pentagon announced that it has undertaken to build a floating pier somewhere in the Gaza coast to deliver 2 million meals daily.
    4. Then, Antony Blinken said the US can support only small-scale military operations in Rafah.
    5. Then, Israel announced its plan to push Rafah civilians into “humanitarian islands” in Central Gaza. I wonder whether it is where the US intends to build a floating pier in 2 months. Did Israel let the cat out of the bag?
    6. At his latest visit to Israel, as usual, Antony Blinken disassociated the US from Israel’s planned Rafah holocaust.
    7. In the meantime, the US proposed a 6-week ceasefire in Gaza and presented a ceasefire riddle to the UNSC which was rightfully vetoed by Russia and China.
    Contd’…..

    • 3
      5

      8. What is the US’s end game in Gaza? It acts like it is on its knees in front of Netanyahu begging on behalf of Gaza civilians while providing him all the necessary weapons and intelligence to massacre the same civilians.
      9. When Israel first attacked al-Ahli hospital in October last year, Mr. Biden vehemently denied Israeli involvement. Since then, Israel has attacked several hospitals in Gaza, some hospitals, multiple times.
      10. There were two terrorist attacks recently; one in Iran and the other in Russia. Interestingly, prior to both attacks, the US had privately warned both countries about it and soon after the attacks, it was the US, not ISIS, which first revealed who was behind it. Anyway, as the terrorists who attacked the Moscow concert hall are now in custody, Russian investigators will be able to find the link that will solve the mystery. My question is, how did terrorists know that they could escape after killing hundreds of people in the Moscow theater? Did an external element provide them with intelligence? Are they “professional” terrorists or were they specifically trained for this particular attack? Was it an attempt to divert attention from Gaza?
      11. The US can stop the war in Gaza as early as tomorrow. But it doesn’t.

            Hello OC,
I have my doubts. Putin is trying to blame the Concert Hall massacre on Ukraine. The US and others warned him of an impending attack by ISIS. (Just like the Indians warned Sri Lanka) and was ignored by him. His stupidity (or worse) is exposed and he desperately wants to divert attention away from himself.
Putin may do something stupid (like bombing Poland which he hates) that could lead to NATO Countries becoming involved. This is what is worrying Western Governments like the UK. They know that they (European Countries) don’t have the weapons or manpower to sustain a war against Russia. Don’t tell SJ he might get ideas😉. But seriously I think the West will persuade Putin quietly that he can’t win a Nuclear War (neither can they, but even here in Sri Lanka we would suffer the consequences). If they supply Ukraine with decent aircraft they could hold Russia at bay for quite a while, until later when an agreement may be reached – or someone bumps off Putin.
Meanwhile Israel continues to kill Civilians in Gaza despite the UN Security Council resolution.

Most Jews in Israel support the genocide and want it to accelerate so that Palestinians, their culture and history, and their future or progeny are erased as quickly as possible, so that Israelis have “peace” with no repeats of Oct 7th when the oppressed launched a military offensive with relatively hand-made weaponry in a defiant act of resistance. In addition to the Hannibal Directive which saw the IDF killing hundreds of Israelis lest they be taken hostage, the hollow-sounding bleating about hostage release is not to be believed. Israel will relentlessly exterminate as many Palestinians as possible, and will build the third temple on the mount of olives after destroying Al Aqsa. The Muslim countries with puppet leaders will restrain their populations from any retribution, as is happening with the ongoing bloodbath of civilians in Gaza and then possibly the West Bank. Is it not time that powerful nations aligned with the Global South reciprocate Israeli moves? Or do we wait for Armageddon and then the evangelical Christian Zionists can be raptured with Jesus’ Second Coming?

    THE CIRCUS OF INSANITY
    .
The author, Tisaranee Gunasekera writes or rather concludes her essay by stating:
    .
“Yet the circus of insanity is being allowed to proceed. Even if sanity dawns at the eleventh hour and serious steps are taken to stop the sacrifice, this will not be the end. For fanaticism is a sickness of the mind. And extremism which begins with destruction often ends up with self-destruction.”
    .
    To which I fully agree.
    .
In fact it’s probabbly one of the best descriptions of what is going on, not just in the Middle East but around the world.
    .
The fact that the assault on Gaza or the conflict between Israel and Palastine is a mere symptom not the disease in itself cannot be over emphasized.
    .
Where to go from such a conclusion will be the question of our times – or the end times, as she has quite prophetically referred to in the title?
    .
The rest unfortunatley will become statistics and narratives that future historians, the serious scholars, and their loyal acolytes on each side of the aisle will debate, fight and lose sleep over… leaving victims that suffer generation after generation… haunted by the horrors inflicted upon them for no fault of theirs… to their own devices… to find some meaning, closure and solace to what just happened to them…
    .
A sad story… of a civilization of thousands of years…

Hon. author TG, Many questions have been expressed about what I have written about the three end time wars described in the bible as revelation prophecies as 1st the invasion of Israel by northern Gog and Magog, 2nd as the political one world leader signing a peace agreement with Israel and breaking it halfway through as the AntiChrist who wants to be worshipped above God just like Lucifer’s “I wills” and as described in Isa. 14, 12-14. He has military power, one world religion and one monetary system The third and final war of Armageddon brings all the armies of the east as well through Iran (Persia) and the dried up Euphrates river to Megiddo and Jerusalem in Israel. The kings of the east are specially mentioned in Rev. 16,12 as coming to war. All nations are gathered against Jerusalem where Jesus comes with his angelic armies to rule and reign and in judgment. Book ends by saying that he is coming soon. I have not added to the biblical record.

contd…. Two days ago Jerusalem re-enacted the palm sunday procession where Jesus was welcomed by the jews as he came to the city to die. They spread palms before him. He taught and healed till Maundy thursday when he celebrated his last passover as a jew and altered it slightly to become the church holy communion now celebrated. That night he prayed in the garden of gethsemane and was betrayed by Judas and was taken a prisoner, whipped and scourged and taken to calvary on good friday to be crucified. There are 14 stations of the cross in this journey to Golgotha-Calvary. and a figure now on a cross at the bottom it is possible to touch the split rock during a 3 hour darkness when the temple veil tore from top to bottom. The body anointed in tomb now greek orthodox in church of holy sepulchre for resurrection.

contd.. Further to the temple veil that tore from the top, the split rock from earthquake, the 3 hours of darkness till he died, and his resurrection with an empty tomb where an angel gave that message to the disciples who came to anoint him, those in Jerusalem had the unbelievable happen when those who had died believing had a first fruits resurrection, visited their families and then went up with Jesus to paradise like the promise to the believing thief crucified with Jesus. When the Roman centurion who whipped Jesus saw all this, in fear he said in Mat.27, 54 ” Truly this was the Son of God” Israel was told “Your God is with you to fight for you against enemies”Deut.20,4 Also in Deut.32,39 “There is no God beside Me” Faith rises.

An Angel told me yesterday that Almighty God reads CT daily and has noted down your reverential contributions. He admires your knowledge of the Book, especially the quotations of chapter and verse which he hasn’t had time to read. He is considering forgiving you your sins, so try not to sound guilty. He believes you haven’t committed murder. But maybe there were below the belt transgressions. He is preparing a special place for you, with beautiful angels who sing, play harp and cook and do other things. Only slightly hot though it will be, because of your sin of self-important vanity. And the conceit that goes with believing you are holier that all others, and that your god is more powerful and important. Like us all David, you will die, rot and putrefy. You will mingle with the atmosphere. Nirvana, nothingness. Tamam Shud.

SJ, I really mean that readers have high IQ and are a select crowd. The issue is in what is written in the bible which I truly believe. When Mat.27,52 says that at the death and resurrection of Jesus “graves were opened and bodies of dead believers were raised and appeared to many in the city”, it does not match an intelligent readership. But the Roman centurion who whipped Jesus feared greatly and believed what he saw saying “truly this was the Son of God”. In addition the veil tore, earth quaked, rocks split and 3 hour darkness occurred till death. Please understand that I write only what is in the bible.

Maybe they don’t know that revelations says 22.18-19 “If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book. And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life”

But you see a lot of pity there; condemn Britain and America……is that criticism for writing the Islam or blaspheming the Islam? What makes you condemn only DTG’s beliefs? Where did that sympathy you show to jihaddist, escape when DTG professes harmless things? If you fear DTG is going to have you converted, enforce the “Online Unsafety Act” for you alone, not for CT. If you have newly become a believer of something and shiver thinking of that change…. Sorry, still, all beliefs are only personal- not to infect others with.

          Hello Mallaiyuran,
I think you have misunderstood my Comment and Intentions re DTG.
DTG believes that the Christian Bible is the word of God. He casts aspersions on anyone that doesn’t. You obviously have not read Revelations or you would have recognised that “So be careful what you write DTG, you might disappear or suffer all the plagues.” is a reference to the injunction given to John not to add or subtract any of the text written about what has been revealed to him. It was definitely not a reference to Gotaba’s “White Vans”. Have you ever heard of the expression “Tongue in Cheek” or recognise when Sarcasm is being used. It is common practise amongst the younger generation to use an “Emoticon” when you are not serious e.g. 😉. The Christian Bible is full of Mysogeny, Patriarchy, Genocide and exhortations to kill (Amelek), as is the Torah. The Koran talks about “slaying unbelievers” The Abrahamic books are full of violence and hypocrisy ( and the occasional ” Love your enemies”). A man in Sri Lanka (Amarasinghe) was arrested for insulting an Ancient Monument (The Sacred Tooth). How can a tooth be a monument?
          Best regards

            Hello Mallaiyuran,
I have no problem with DTG’s beliefs, or anyone else’s. I bear him no malice, however, anyone writing in these columns (including ourselves) can expect robust replies, even questioning of what we write and our motives. I do not (if at all possible) resort to ad hominem attacks, and try to respect what Commenters genuinely believe. Unlike some in CT, DTG is consistent and doesn’t resort to subterfuge or personal attacks. For that I respect him.
            Best regards

We are dealing with a text that has been tampered several times over with in the name of the the faith and in the interest of making the text readable.
I really enjoyed reading the Mormon Bible, although I did not believe a word.
A faith that rejects evolution and the physics of the universe risks producing irrational followers.

If the enemy is infinitely more powerful and immoral you have to surrender.
    Hamas must surrender international supervision.

        Somu,
Hamas, maybe one day, can be brought to surrender. They are a localized group. What about the gypsy ones that started the shooting in Russia at the concert goers? Isn’t it the illusionistic ideology Islam has packed within it that sustained the UNP-SLFP terrorist group to employ Jihadists to create havoc in Lanka to enthrone a Hitler? What the heck is this “Music is blasphemy”? Aren’t biased notions like these the true blaspheme of humanity? Is it because most of the current Islamic ideology came out of those Afghani Mountain dwellers, consuming Ganja to have their head iced? There is part of Hinduism, which was brought by the Gandahari Aryan invaders, drinking Somapanam and sacrificing life forms.
Somu, you worry about the Colombo Tamils who are well and settled, but you never bothered Northerners who are occupied by the rapist Army or Estate Tamils who live without a plot to build a hut. Why is that defective tendency within you? You worry about the strong and armed Israeli, but have you worried about the Afghanistan woman folks whose neck under husbands’, fathers’, male siblings’ boot legs. Remember, in those communities, even women are enemies of poor women.

        Soma,

All Hamas leaders will be hunted down and executed. Look up “Mengele”, the so-called “Angel of Death.” That guy escaped to Brazil, but Israeli Mossad was on his tail until the very last. Eichmann was not so lucky.

Tamam Shud.

Sonali, Thank you for all the good thoughts you have expressed for me. Yes we all die rot and putrefy but the Roman centurion is witness to those who resurrected when Christ resurrected and took them with him as first fruits after visiting their families as witnesses. As for Nirvana it is not in the equation of the creator God and I have nothing to do with it. Blessings to you.

Maybe you are near the Use By Date and therefore panicking. You have a human brain capable of thinking. Use it instead of blindly believing in a book written by man, one of many such books for when mankind believed in myths and superstitions. Work out reality yourself. Or there is scientific thought to help you. Or keep on believing in Harry Potter despiate your age.

sonali, thank you but no panick. Bible inspired by God prophesied the coming of Jesus (took 4000 years) His coming again in the millenial age cannot be stopped. Thats my scientific reality.
