An incident in Kurunegala last night showed how the notorious Bodu Bala Sena’s (BBS) General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasara was above the law, amidst claims by the hardcore Buddhist group that their supporters thwarted attempts by the police to arrest Gnanasara, who has been known for inciting racial hatred between Buddhists and Muslims in Sri Lanka.
With just a week to go for Muslims to observe their holy month of Ramadan, the minority community in Sri Lanka was once again penalized on Saturday night with the BBS accused of instigating groups to launch an attack across Muslim owned shops as well as at a mosque in Kurunegala.
The government remained tight lipped on the incident, while even the country’s mainstream media chose to ignore the incident, which was not the first incident for May. However US Ambassador Sri Lanka Atul Keshap in a tweet today morning said that “any attack on a house of worship is reprehensible; this is the third in a week.” He also called on the authorities to arrest and try the perpetrators as soon as possible.
Attempts by the Colombo Telegraph to contact Minister of Law and Order Sagala Ratnayaka proved futile, while police spokesman DIG Prishantha Jayakody said he was unable to speak as he too was at a meeting.
In a live Facebook video, a monk representing the BBS said that over 200 police officers attempted to arrest Gnanasara near a Muslim village in the Kurunegala district. The monk claimed that all the 200 police officers including the senior officials were drunk when they tried to ‘apprehend’ Gnanasara, but their attempts to arrest him was thwarted by supporters of the BBS. The BBS representative also said that his group will be compelled to resort to violence if the government and police continued to ignore their complaints made against Muslims including the Muslim Ministers. “We are warning this gay government not to lay a hand on Gnanasara, if they do it, then it will be their biggest mistake,” the monk said via a live Facebook video.
The BBS representative also said that they had with them a large number of youth from Kurunegala, and more were joining their cause from across the country. “We are ready to sort out our issues through dialogue. There can be no reconciliation in the country if the problems of the Buddhist community are not solved,” the representative said. He however did not mention as to why the police attempted to apprehend Gnanasara but indicated that the police had ordered the BBS and Gnanasara to come to the Police headquarters and give a statement on some matter.
Pictures shared widely on social media today morning showed a damaged mosque in the district as well as shops in Kurunegala which came under attack by unidentified groups. In another incident, a Muslim owned shop in Elpitiya was also set on fire by a masked man, according to CCTV footage.
Incidentally all these events come just weeks away from the third anniversary of the Aluthgama riots, which was also launched by the BBS in June 2014 against the Muslims.
In November last year, the Government ordered the police to arrest Abdul Razick, the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Thawheed Jamath for inciting religious disharmony by speaking against other religions in an offensive manner. However, a recent video shows how Gnanasara too has openly made abusive remarks against Muslims as well as their God; yet no action has been taken to date despite making such unwarranted statements by him. In November, Gnanasara also issued an ultimatum to the police giving them a day’s time to arrest Razick, or else he and his supporters will launch a blood bath from the Muslim dominant Maligawatte, however to date no action has been taken against him for making such threats. Cultural tension is on the rise again. I feel certain groups are in an attempt to justify implementation of the federal concept in this country based on ethnic/cultural origins and to suppress political opponents by misleading people. Meanwhile another party is silently working towards their long term goals. The government should take immediate actions to prevent another unnecessary blood shed in the country and we are already tired of it.
Rather than pointing fingers at each other both parties should look in to their own errors. I do not think politically planned cultural and land invasion is justifiable. If we go back to the history you can see the Golden Doom was built right next to the Temple of Mount leading to an ever lasting conflict. I feel same has happened in certain areas of our country during the recent past.
Cultural dominance of one party causes suppression of the other and we do not have practiced harmony as in the case of other nations. A nation can have many races, religions, cultures. We have not learnt a lesson from the 1915 riots and 1983 black July. The Law must stands above all. We as Sinhala Buddhists only have this country and I personally do not agree with a such division at any cost. Various groups can emerge to counter-act cultural tension in the absence of a responsible involvement from the government.
If someone is assaulted based on cultural or religious origin that is not justified. Strong policies and laws need to be implemented as in the case of Singapore, Israel type suppression is not acceptable though. If someone says ‘disregard your cultural beliefs’ that is again not acceptable and I’m sure both parties will not agreed upon this to the same extent. I do not like to talk on these but little afraid about the silence of responsible parties and the over involvement of the extreme groups. Culture and religions are inner needs of the humans beings and people are sensitive it and con not be demolished.
Once you ignite the fire you can not stop it so easily. Only the foreign nations will take the advantage of these internal conflicts.

The importance is the facts highlighted by Gnanasara rather than how he projects them.There is a big muslim invasion in the entire world by subtle means and this has threatened the existence of other religions and cultures.Look at how they multiply and populate places.They actively do that threatening to become majority one day.Are we suppose to look the other way because it is muslims God given right to populate the planet.I dont think we should put up with this kind of bullshit and before our entire neighbourhood is filled with muslims we should act.We should make sure our numbers are growing and they should not take the advantage of indiscrminate multiplication of their type.This is obviously unfair and we should have the back bone to denounce that.They destroy others religious and cultural heritage and also build mosques every corner of the country.If some one says why fight with these innocent muslims and let them get on with their buissness as they ususally do without any obstruction It will be too late when that person wakes up to see the reality.

I hope Saudi Arabia pays attention. I hope Saudi Arabia sends more millions of Riyals to convert people to Islam. I hope they buy more land in Colombo and I hope they build more Mosques and feed people. The only true way to make that nation a truly non-violent nation is to make it a Muslim nation and establish Sharia law.

It is high time to bring in The Iron fist man and handover the Job .. clean up ..
You need to set up unit of Gurkha localized with recruits from members of all communities especially to end racism and riots under an experienced and good instant decision making commander and with shoot on site ,no questions asked .
