Gota, You’ve Got Blood On Your Hands: Awakening Of National Conscience

By Vishwamithra

“There is such a thing as a national conscience, and it can be touched.”  ~ Charles Kuralt

Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and captive breeding ground for wild Asian elephants located at Pinnawala village, 8 miles northeast of Kegalle town in Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri Lanka. Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 96 elephants, including 43 males and 68 females from 3 generations, living in Pinnawala. Its close situation to Rambukkana, an electorate known to have been represented in parliament by the famous Karunaratne family, siblings N H Keerthiratne and Asoka Karunaratne in the fifties, sixties and seventies and Samantha, Asoka K’s daughter later.

Rambukkana is a laid back sleepy town in Kegalle district. It’s somewhat of a difficult task to remember how to get there unless, of course, you are an elephant lover. The aforementioned Pinnawala elephant orphanage is just about few minutes away from Rambukkana and for those who are keen lovers of elephants, this is your place to be.

It was in the afternoon on April 19, just past 4 pm, that Rambukkana erupted and became famous (or more aptly put, infamous) for the first spill of blood at the altar of People’s Struggle for Economic justice. Precisely after 16 days of the first protest on April 3, opposite the Galleface Green, one innocent life was claimed by the struggle and the police officers who manned the protest site in Rambukkana town blinked first.

No such violence was ever advocated by the protesters nor should it be condoned, whether committed by either party, yet it’s inevitable that human lives will be lost until a mutually agreeable settlement is reached between the two parties, protesters and the government. This may well be the first sacrifice, but rest assured it won’t be the last. Such is ironical evolution of a revolution!

Public anger is peaking. Its borders are no more expanding; when anger turns into public fury there will be hell to pay. Any measures to mitigate its spread do not seem to be adequate, nor do they represent a result of strategic thinking. It’s even futile to assume that the current ruling family has any element of knowledge or competence to deal with such drastic situations of breakdown of public peace. Kicking the can down the road will not serve any significant purpose.

In other words, the Galle Face protesters have taken over the national conversation totally. Television news is being dominated by the protesters and their seemingly indomitable effort to draw public attention, not unto themselves but very aptly towards the very subject matter of the protest: suppressive cost of living, spiraling cost of fuel, scarcities of essential household commodities and unpardonable corrupt practices committed by the so-called First family of Sri Lanka.

From rural Medirigiriya to Dehiattakandiya, from Point Dondra to Point Pedro and from Colombo to Kalmunai, from all corners of the land only one refrain resonates and that refrain is asking Gotabhaya Rajapaksa to go home. An innocent protest march has turned into a national dynamic, the organism of which is eating into the very fabric of our collective political mindset. A culture is emerging from the deep resentment of the government’s incapacity, its incompetence and its all-consuming corruption and naked greed. On the one hand we, who live in these turbulent times, are unpleasantly unfortunate to experience this sociocultural mayhem and witness the political decadence, it’s also a once-in-a-lifetime privilege to be part of this upheaval which has attracted many a youth in the country.

A unique spectacle is unfolding before our eyes; a movement of people’s hearts and minds that were hereto been in deep slumber in the land of ‘comfort zone’, deceived by politicians and easy decisions procrastinated by an inefficient and incompetent bureaucracy; daily lives made miserable by scarcities; transport paralyzed for want of fuel; cooking made irregular and households despondent by non-availability of cooking gas and despite all this comical circus of sociopolitical ballet, the youth of the country is dramatizing an incredible sense of leadership and empathy for their fellow citizenry.

As was penned in my last column, the economic crisis that literally swallowed our country has indeed become a beacon of hope for the future. Whatever definition one can ascribe to sacrifice and determination and stoicism, our youth has shown that they possess all those enviable characteristics. The death in Rambukkana is, in fact, a harbinger of that sacrifice, determination and stoicism, all in one personified in our youth.

How long either side, the youth or the government, would hold on to their respective positions is anybody’s guess. But given the current status of the economy and its fluctuating and unpredictable behavior on a daily basis, the side that wins the battle might not be the ultimate winner in the probing eyes of historians who will have the hindsight because they will pen their analyses and judgments after the events have already taken their course crossing many a peak and valley. We do not have the comfort of that hindsight now; we are writing and reporting and chronicling the events as and when they occur in real time. Our judgments, our analyses and our ultimate reading of all what’s unfolding now may become totally imprecise and erroneous in the short term; but yet they may well be very close to the stark truth yet to manifest in the long term.

Allow me to hand that task to future historians. Nonetheless, for any one of us, disregard one’s immediate environment and ill-defining the context of events is no option,. The Rajapaksas have driven the country and its coffers and its citizens to ground. They buttressed their failing election campaign with some of the best branding minds in the country. Having been given the advantage of being branded at first as the war-heroes, Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family may have come to the flawed conclusion that the war-victory also handed them an unqualified license to rape Mother Lanka. They were so clumsily mistaken. Mother Lanka may have been suffering under the threat of being vanquished by a brutal army led by that man, Prabhakaran and his Tigers. But when the sounds of guns fell silent, the Mother of all children who claim Lanka as their land of birth was not ready to expose her rarified interior to half-educated, self-centered family whichever ancestral home they claim as their origin.

The Deep South of Ceylon has had an illustrious history, beginning from King Kavantissa and King Dutu Gemunu. Those who hail from that part of our land are proud but not arrogant; they could be ruthless but with an unfailing trait of being merciful. The Rajapaksas cannot connect some un-connectable dots and turn a crooked one into a straight line. They, time and time again, proved that their unsounded allegiance to their kith and kin is not their strength, on the contrary it was their fatal flaw. Nepotism is certainly not an acceptable substitute for competency, nor is it one for enduring leadership.

They are all children of that unkind father called ‘accident of birth’. But what they performed after assuming power was no accident. All the siblings, sons and nephews consciously conspired to loot the country’s wealth; they willfully allowed themselves into the national assets which they thought was bottomless. The day it hit them that what they pilfered was what would have been saved as the country’s wealth, no longer could the youth wait without action. So was born the ‘Galleface Struggle’.

Without a leader but still with precise direction, without a prearranged plan but still with a sharply defined purpose, they got on to the streets, firstly in Colombo, then in Kandy, Kurunegala, Vavunia, Galle, Medirigiriya, Dehiattakandiya and the remotest hamlets in the land, the struggle spread its wings, capturing the imagination of the leaders of all religions, castes and faiths. The country’s conscience was awakened; her hearts began a vibrant beat; her collective mind appealed to the most helpless folks and they fascinated the wealthiest who led most comfortable lives.

The appeal is universal; the organization is spontaneous and the need is desperate. No political leader had the guts to come to the land of the struggle- Galleface Green. No turning back, no belated regrets and no compromise whatsoever. The Rajapaksas must go. They must abdicate power not for the sake of the country, not for the sake of their families, even not for their crude and uniquely corrupt themselves. They must go because it’s the right thing to do.

The youth celebrated their Sinhalese and Tamil New year on the Green. Both ends of the Green were like revolving doors- when one batch leaves another batch enters. Unplanned yet orderly flow of humanity consisting of artists, cricketers and other celebrities who felt left out decided that their glory and pomp is of no value or any relevancy if their mite is not contributed to this national fight. So they too came.

The lotus-eaters started their usual armchair critique. Their main question was as to who fills the vacuum created by the exit of the Rajapaksas. Do not worry and do not bother to find out who would come in place of the most undesirable rulers Sri Lanka has ever known. When the dust settles and all the chips are down there will emerge an assembly of leaders who shall lead this land to that un-promised oasis. Their hands will be busy and clean and above all un-bloodied!

Gota has had blood in hands for a long time, Tamil blood, Muslim blood and Sinhala blood are all running through his backyard. This animal needs to be caught and exterminated. Now more Sinhala blood is being drawn. He is a killer and a thief, a maniac and a serial killer.

Not only Gota but also whole Rajapaksa has blood on their hands. Jail should be their home.

Yes, but he and his gang of evil military men, were all Golden Braves and War Heroes when only Thamizh’s blood was drawn and horrific war crimes and acts of torture and marginalization were committed against them. Now one Chingkallam is dead and everything changes. From Golden Brave/ war hero to a killer. thief, maniac. Proves how much Thamizh’s life is worth. Kill Thamizh in their thousands and commit war crimes on them, deliberately starve them, loot their lands and wealth. Praised as Golden Brave, War hero, and voted into power. Kill even one Chingkallam, starve and make them undergo hardships. and everything changes. Blood in your hands, scoundrel, thief, killer. Must go. This has been the story of this island from the time of independence. One set of rules and standards for Thamizh and now Muslims and another for the Chingkallams. No wonder it did not improve but became bankrupt. Golden Braves and War heroes when you kill, loot, and commit war crimes on others but a killer and thief when the same thing happens to you.

This is why they have selective compassion. Tamils blood even of women and children did not wake their conscience. Because it was not their problem, everyone that spoke was a Kotiya, Today its the same medicine but different patient and now it hurts.
This is why I say selective compassion.

        Pandi Kutti,
“Kill Thamizh in their thousands and commit war crimes on them,…”

It was Thamizhs who slaughtered innocent unarmed indigenous Sinhala Buddhist men, women, children, Buddhist monks and even fetus of Sinhala pregnant women using suicide bombers, claymore bombs, AK47s, chemical weapons, swords and machetes for three decades just to grab land belonged to indigenous Sinhalayo in NE to create a separate State for the descendants of coolies brought to Yapanaya by Portuguese and Dutch.

I agree with your post, having said that if I respond the way I feel quite a few could fall off their chair.

So I am going to pose a question instead.

Do Sri Lankans in general have selective compassion or are the chronically ignorant to what’s happening around them?

        Bert, don’t take me the wrong way. I always feel anybody irrespective of their ethnic brand, do only start to care when it hits them directly. This is why I am saying this;

1988-1989 period Premadasa and his goons massacred 85,000 rural Sinhala youths, the Tamils did not scream.

In the 90s, the dreadful LTTE fellows chased the Muslims away from Jaffna, we Tamils or the Sinhalese did not complain. Some of our close friends who are Muslims lost everything. It broke my heart to see them leaving with nothing.

Tamils have been slaughtered in various periods and the Sinhalese did not scream.

Right now, this is an entirely a different and unique problem. Not just the majority but also the minorities are suffering without the essentials. Hence everyone is shouting. I hope this tragedy will unite all the people of this country.

        Bert,
I believe, not either of those!!
Sri Lankans are more Emotive than Rational!!
        Heart rules the mind!!
This is more pronounced when they are close to incident!!
Causes the misconception, that it is “SELECTIVE COMPASSION”

Sorry, I beg to differ. They were fully aware of what this man did to the Tamils and the horrific large scale killings of innocent Tamil civilians and the war crimes that the Sri Lankan state and armed forces committed against them in May 2009 and still continue to do so and approved these actions and voted him into power by a huge majority, as he promised them more of this and prosperity only for the Sinhalese, especially the Sinhalese Buddhists. Now the promised prosperity on the back of the marginalized Tamils and their former allies in the Eelam Tamil genocide the Muslims have not arrived, therefore up in arms. To state that they were not aware is a lie. Yes, their heart and emotion rule their mind. As this is full of racist hatred for the Tamils and now also other minorities. Have been brainwashed to hate Tamils from the time of independence by all Sinhalese-led political parties, their elite, clergy, and news media, with the Mahavamsa myth and fake/concocted history.

          • 3
            0

The Rajapakses, especially Gothabaya took this anti-Tamil and now anti-Muslim hatred to a higher level, as they and all the people surrounding them really believe in this myth that the land only belongs to the Sinhalese, especially the Sinhalese Buddhists. Therefore did not hesitate to commit all these horrific crimes and the Tamils, as there cleansed the island of all the unwanted elements and made the island a pure Sinhalese Buddhist state, as per the Mahavamsa. which in reality is a mixture of history and anti-Tamil myths.

“More emotive than rational”, like Rohan I too differ. I have heard that for yeaes and alone dosen’t explain the 75 years history. Even if it’s true it’s time to change the thinking ( though could have ben done much earlier with very less pain )

What sort of idiot comment is that TFN? You are confusing Gota with Prabhakaran.

      • 8
        2

No. Not confused. Very clear. Thinks he is you. Another Thamizh hating bloodthirsty Chingkallam, living the good life somewhere in Croydon UK and herding reindeer for Viking Sukkar Pappa in Lapland. Even as per your government statistics, Prapakaran and the LTTE are responsible for less than 5% of the civilian killings, during the 30-year-old civil war. The Sri Lankan state, armed forces/police, Chingkalla thugs/criminals, and Muslim home guards in the east are responsible for more than 95% of the civilian killings and more than 95% of their victims were innocent Thamizh civilians, deliberately targeted, killed, raped, tortured and all sorts of horrible war crimes committed on them , especially in May 2009 , that the UN is still investigating or pretending to. The maximum number of Chingakalla and Muslim civilians killed at the hands of the LTTE is not more than 3000, whereas the Sri Lankan state its armed forces and various paramilitaries under their control killed around 300000 Thamizh civilians, around 145000 in May 2009 alone and ethnically cleansed and chased away around a million indigenous Thamizh largely to the west.

        • 8
          3

We are not confusing Gorabaya with Prapakaran and fully well know what really happened and the killings and atrocities committed by both. However, Sri Lanka and Gothabaya represent the state that is supposed to protect all its citizens irrespective of ethnicity language spoken, or religion. They failed to do so from the time of independence, only favouring the Chingkallams and Buddhism above everyone else and religions. Prpakaran was a guerilla leader who claimed to be fighting for the rights of the island’s Thamizh, a vast difference. 99% of his campaign and guerrilla warfare were only confined to the Thamizh north and east.

      • 8
        1

There is no confusion. Prabakaran was a better person than Gota. Prabakarans philosophy could have been flawed but he practiced what he preached. Gota on the other hand promised to protect the country but he dint have the education, competency or the integrity to practice what he preached.
People are also at fault now most of them who voted for him are protesting and if you believe what they are saying they elected a low life thief, who instigated a mass murder during Easter to come to power.
What a bunch of hypocrites they called him the “Rata Rakina Viruwa”. They got to think every one to be stupid if they say did not know what they are saying now three years ago.

Nevertheless, they voted for their comback – as if they are permamently blind and deaf.
I think failure lies on the public.
Either our people are totally impaired or they can only be ruled by colonial masters.
      :
Sinhala buddhists (please dont mix it up with true buddhism based on non-violence practises) who are the majority of the island population dont give a damn about injustice being continued. Many woul dnnot even notice.
They would forget everything for petty gains. Rational thinking is far from their thinking nature.
One regular tourist family revealed me lately that our people would do everything for money. I mean everything :(

Until we are able to detach ourselves from emotion and look at the sir lankan situation objectively, we will not see the actual truth as to why we are the way we are.
We have to take a step back and trace where, how and why things got out of hand starting from independence.
Sataka sakkili are gigantic opportunist who have used every loophole to rob our country dry since they came to the scene in 2005, but prior to that, there was lots of unrest in the country.
We have to earnestly find the root causes of our problems and proffer solutions.

When a company goes bankrupt, they call in administrators, who will appoint accountancy firm to value the assets and find out whether the creditors and shareholders can be compensated with the value of the assets. Person or company buying the bust firm, has to take in both liabilities and assets. At present liability of Srilanka is 51 billion dollars. In the current situation I do not think that Srilanka is worth 50 billion dollars. Therefore if Elon Musk pays a toke one dollar, he can seal the deal. As for the sangha, they will be rounded up and deported to Buddha Gaya, from where they came.

      NV:
This is a tricky question not because of the Sanghas because that problem could be solved even today if the population wants to.

Ban all clergy from doing or speaking about politics. Some would say that this would impede on their rights. So is not been able to marry have a family, booze in public. But if they wanted to join an order they have to abide by that. Separate the state from religion.

If Elon Musk buys SL it will be a worse decision than Cabral buying
Greek bonds. With the bonds we knew the maximum loss.

Are the politicians any better than the Sanga? Even if you exclude them, what is he going to do with them after the deal. They are dead weight.

      • 5
        3

        Bert

“Ban all clergy from doing or speaking about politics. “

It would be a difficult rule to impose.
Rather, why not ban politicians meeting or seen with monks.

If monks campaign for any particular politician the state should impose heavy fines on the politicians.

If any politician is found to promise favours for monks then again that particular politicians assets (including his positions) stripped or his mistress should be fined heavily. So the mistress will keep him straight.

During the last elections Sajith (mummy’s boy) promised to build 1100 Vihares in North and East. A few months before the elections he confirmed 150 Vihares were closed for various reasons.

        Leave the Monks alone.
The monks will gradually become Buddhists or convert to Buddhism when their oxygen of publicity is blocked.

        I have more ideas.
All these ideas are being given free of charges.

Maybe however once the oath is taken in front of fake, crook monks in an elaborate ceremony which is paid for by state, the first official act of the president and his cronies is to put their hand in Treasury (state coffer). It never stops.

“Ban all clergy from doing or speaking about politics. Some would say that this would impede on their rights. So is not been able to marry have a family, booze in PUBLIC. But if they wanted to join an order they have to abide by that.”
        I am confused.
So they practice celibacy and avoid alcohol, “out of sight”?? Behind the Almirah or Cupboard or Curtain or Veil!!???
Abhorring practice and hope not is the case!!

Elon Musk decides to buy out Sri Lanka (not as a going concern) what would be your advice to him and other asset strippers?
Elon Musk to ensure they are in a “separate enclave”, independent of SL, to manage their own affairs and propagate Buddhism worldwide, with an International Airport (Mattala) to receive dignitaries – not necessarily for their outbound travel – and assistance, such as food donations etc., for sustenance and a 24 hour bus service on a circular route every 15 minutes enable their transport!
No cars and devoid of luxury!!
      Follow strict Buddhist principals.
NO cash transactions or cash donations!!!
Emancipated Sangha in the close vicinity, but separated from EM SL

      Chiv,
“Gotha got blood on his hands not just now, but for decades.”

Gotabhaya Rajapakshe played a leading role to clean the blood spilled by Tamil terrorists all over the country by carrying out genocide of Sinhala Buddhists over a period of three decades to grab their land in NE to create a separate State for Tamils in Yapanaya who are the descendants of Dravidians that came to Sinhale after 13th Century.

Evil , did you hear Mara telling press ” if those stupid brothers of mine have to go, so it be, but I will be leading interim government.” (Leading to where ?? ). He also said “its unfair asking me to step down from PM”. Evil, do you remember the prophetic wors of MR prior to presidential election. “My brother will become President , me the PM and then brother will hand over power to me ” . Amazing isn’t it??.

    Dear Vishwamithra –
    .
I don’t agree with you that we mustn’t give serious thought to what our aims should be to deal with Post_Rajapaksa Lanka. Each of us should be giving it serious thought, but separately, as individuals; that way, we need not give voice to our thoughts, and it needn’t distract us from our main effort at this time.
    .
    One: get all Rajapaksas out.
    .
Two: don’t allow then to leave the country. Lock them up. Persuade them by all fair means to bring back the money that they have stolen. If that fails, there are bound to be others who will want to use even the foulest means to accomplish that.
    .
Now I’m beginning to be a bit of a hypocrite. I will not protest against those who use Guantanamo Methods. For my then silence, let the Rajapaksas understand that they have brought all that on themselves.

    • 18
      5

      Sinhala_man,

Our army has much better methods than the Guantanamo Methods. Gitmo methods are for sissies.
If you saw how creative our army is, you would begin to think that Gitmo methods are a walk in the park on a nice sunny day.

Yes, Rajapaksies need to be put through it. As a Sinhalese you need to ask yourself, who would you have more in common with? The Tamils or the corrupted Sinhala politicians. I have more in common with the Tamil people than with these corrupt politicians.

Notice, that I excluded Muslims. Today is the 3rd anniversary and not one scum bag has apologized. No, I don’t have anything in common with murderers.

Regie boy, you are a shemale, aren’t you? How is Richmond Hill doing? Are you living comfortably after being fired from a low class 3rd world corrupt army? Idiot, do you really think the Muslims carried out the bombing? It was your handler who instigated the entire bombing to come to power. You were hiding under a tree while the LTTE was at your door. Then got fired by this low class inferior army. So shut the hell up loser. You can’t even hold a candle to the Sinhala Man. What about Gota and his fellow Gundas committing genocide?
Would you consider Gota’s fellow Gundas killing 130,000 innocent Sinhala or Buddhist civilians between 1987 and 1991 an act of mercy killing or mass suicide by the victims themselves? Don’t forget in 1971 it was conservatively estimated being 18,000.

further to this the army or police once sent to Tahiti state was alleged to have raped those women down there too.
        .
Srilanken triforces – no doubt real heroes did great in Army, Navy and Airforce but simpletons of your nature, instead made use of the time to rape and murder the innocient people.

That and what they did since 2009 to the entire nation is boomeranging on them today….

It is very important that the attempt to manufacture enmity between law enforcement officers and the public is thwarted. Ultimately, the armed forces will be used against the people if all else fails. The army must soon stand with the people before being misled to oppose them or kill them etc. If the two groups begin to see each other as enemies, the autocracy would have won. The fomenting of unrest must be dampened with utmost skill and patience. This is a “Now or Never” moment. If the oppressors win, all will be lost for generations of Sri Lankans to be born.

    • 1
      0

      Mr Pethiyagoda,

What you say is true. But how does one thwart enmity between law enforcement and the public?

The Army soldiers have to take orders from the higher ups. The higher ups are in the pockets of the Rajapakses.

The Police have to ensure law and order, if not the very thing that protestors are fighting for (Democracy) is at stake. Only the public is on the streets. The Rajapakses aren’t. So, anything the Police does will interact with the Public but not with the Rajapakses.

One strategy could be to disrupt daily life and the state comes to a position where they can no longer pay Police and army salaries. But that is a long shot. The state might at that point tap into people’s savings accounts through taxation. Use borrowed money to pay “essential services” (essential to them).

Finally, there is the international community. Overthrowing a democracy will not be seen favourably by them. Unless the darlings of democracy in the West wants a regime change. And right now that doesn’t look like it.

      RSP,
      .
You sound serious for once. I’m making this response to you an illustration of what I mean. Most of the time you project a persona that is offensive; it may be that you derive some perverse pleasure by receiving insults.
      .
Each law enforcement officer is an individual. We could establish eye-contact, and exchange a smile. I’ve been demonstrating in Bandarawela and Badulla. Having established that initial contact with them, I say, “we know you’re with us, but once in your uniform, you must do your duty”.
      .
Both Police and Armed Forces are very proud of their uniform. It may be that I’m advocating being consciously manipulative. Justified by the over-all situation. I have had them giving me a thumbs-up. I return it.
      .
Emulate Lasantha! I figure out that he’s a man of high status, but see what simplicity and directness he exudes. He shuns any temptation to be extra clever; rarely uses sarcasm – it is so likely to be misunderstood.
      .
If you have any intelligence, which is rather doubtful, you would realise that there is a reason why most readers hate you. If you enjoy being hated, you’re perverse!

You have raised the spectre that the State may no longer be able to pay salaries. It could be beyond the control of the Rajapaksas, who wouldn’t deliberately precipitate greater acuteness to the present crisis.
        .
It would be sensible for all of us to be cognizant of this. It is a very real possibility. I depend on my pension – which I regard as earned salary – for service conscientiously performed when I was younger.
        .
It is possible that the IMF would prescribe halving salaries – even though the rupee has been devalued. ATMs may start messaging us that hey have no money to give us; the Banks may quite simply not open. The effects of that would trickle down to the entire population.
        .
It is, indeed, going to be hard times ahead for us.
        .

Ranil did not resign after the Easter Bombings, although 5 Muslim ministers resigned. Gota will not step down unless there is pressure from the military or he is unable to secure a loan from the IMF. If the second scenario takes place, he may leave the country in the middle of the night, on a secret plane, to California or Singapore. Gotha liberated the country, including Tamils, from suicide terrorism, he is not going to turn on the liberated by using violence to suppress their peaceful protest. He is the one who made these protests possible.

It’s a sad situation. The man is misunderstood. A victim of circumstances. Most of all, he needs better advisors.

“Ranil did not resign after the Easter Bombings”

That is because Ranil did not instigate the bombings, and I think he knew who.

        Bert

“Listen to the Rev. Cardinal you too might get a general idea of who was behind the bombing.”

So it took 269 life for the cardinal to switch his loyalty.
This type of men of cloth should be excommunicated. The cardinal is very unpopular among Catholics. Now the Catholics have a progressive Pope and it is time he taught the opportunists to be liberal human beings.

The Cardinal shared bed with fasting saffron thug in Kandy on 3rd June 2019 who was demanding the removal of three Muslim politicians from their posts.

Malcolm Ranjith, the archbishop of Colombo told Tamils “Foreigners should not tell us what to do…We are not a pack of fools,” the cardinal said. “But if we do not resolve these issues, then we open ourselves to foreign intervention.”
        https://www.business-standard.com/article/pti-stories/church-warns-of-foreign-intervention-in-sri-lanka-113121100690_1.html

Yet he is going around the world and demanding International Community and his Churches all over the world to pressure Sri Lanka for justice.

What a bunch of hypocrites these religious leaders are.

“Yet he is going around the world and demanding International Community and his Churches all over the world to pressure Sri Lanka for justice.’
I like to believe that I am a strong catholic but I was critical of his sermons. The answer to your question is “Selective Compassion” this time Sinhalese too lost their life and limbs.
          “‘God is Dead’”
He is not. See what’s happening to the criminal master minds. Not just them their future generations too will have to live in disgrace.

Bert, Cardinal is taking the case to Vatican after 3 years of waiting and this time he is going with more than 50 witnesses / victims of Easter mayhem. Whereas Pakistan completed the inquiry and 6 were given life term for the murder of Lankan. Obviously our racist tried exploiting the situation by making hue and cry, yet amidst political turmoil, Pakistan provided justice to the affected family. Even today in parliament opposition accused Sally as the master mind. Still people like Lester , Regie and Svenson will continue with their sing- song.

What are you his ” Golden Goose” that opportunistically flew away or migrated to the UK, due to the bad conditions here and from the safety of the UK cackling away , your racist pro Rajapaka anti Thamizh anti Muslim cackles, like a poor lost goose that has lost its bearings?

Pandi Kutti aka Rohan aka Siva Sankaran,

Regardless of the amount of propaganda you write here, Tamils lost the war. Even if Gotha is replaced with a JVP janitor, the Army will continue to occupy the North and East. Your fake freedom struggle was crushed by Gotha once and for all. Now you have two choices, either flee the country or live under permanent occupation. Actually there is a third choice, to join your heroes at the bottom of Nanthikadal, but I leave that to you.

      Dear Lester,
….Most of all, he needs better advisors…..
While it is true that Leaders need advisors, the Leader must have the capacity to sift the advice and take the good ones. In all matters so far, Gota has not taken the right advice or not heeded it because of his obtuseness. You can forgive for one mistake but in matters of state, too much is involved to err, over and over again. Over the last two years Gota has messed up, a month or two but after 2.5 years he does not know what is happening and asking the opposition to help him, better he gives up and goes.

        MyView,

Gotha had or has the correct ideas, but the implementation is wrong. For example, accelerated Chinese-style development with Chinese loans. Sri Lanka does not have the knowledge capacity to build “modern” infrastructure such as superhighways and ports. Even if it did, the capital expenditure requires significant amounts of borrowing. Sri Lanka turned to China because Chinese loans have better terms than the Western ones. The mistake is that China lets only Chinese workers work on these projects. There is no knowledge transfer to Sri Lanka. If you look at something like the Tesla factory, Tesla is forced to hire Chinese workers. Through the JV system, China is stealing cutting-edge tech secrets day and night from Western companies. Gotha should have borrowed money from China and implemented similar JV’s with Western companies. Not to steal their tech, but to create a class of highly skilled technical workers.

        MyView,

Sri Lanka’s energy policy was wrong. Perhaps speaking from hindsight, the MaRa government should have invested heavily in nuclear energy after 2009. This is the path followed by the Arab countries, although they have abundant amounts of oil. Western countries will soon follow the same path, as this is the only way to get away from Russian fossil fuels and achieve zero C02 emissions within 1-2 decades. Given its small size, a few nuclear reactors can power the entire country. If oil remains elevated at +$100 per barrel, it will be a massive headwind for development, especially in the case of emerging economies.

Absolute stunner and now deal with it and aptly so, without which, ‘REVOLUTION’, is meaningless!!
You cannot correct a ‘malady’ without seeking the “root cause of the problem”!
    Fist step in the process!
Having found it, ERADICATE IT “LOCK, STOCK AND BARREL”
The “ROTTEN GOVERNANCE”, has been the bane of this country – whether,
    A. 1953 ‘Hal hartal’, 1956, 58, 61, 71, 77,or 83 ‘anti-Tamil program’,
    B. 1971 and 1988 Insurgency by “job deprived youth”
    C. Or Aluthgama or Kandy riots caused by anti-Muslim program, or
    D. The 30-year LTTE terrorist War
Could lead you only funneled to one singular reason!
    1. Inept and Corrupt Governance or absence of any Governance,
    2. Chauvinism,
    3. Racism,
    4. Misogyny,
    5. Religious insensitiveness (Including invoking directives to cremations of Christians and Muslims during Covid-19)
Which, causative reasons and instigators, must SEEK, ERADICATE IT.
If not given this paradigm change, we will be BACK AT THE SAME GAME AS BEFORE!!

      Mahila
In as much I agree with you on all the points you have stated, I would like to narrow down the issues in our country down to one main cause.
That cause is : after independence, our government did not change the method of governance from colonial rule to national/ self rule.
Our leaders continued in a neo-colonial rulership method.
They continued divide and rule system, did not re train the army and the police to treat the public as the number 1 citizens in the country, they did not change the laws to favour the common man.
The media, either Radio or TV have continued to favour the leaders by brainwashing the public.
Derana and Hiru have taken the propaganda machine to the hilt.
That bastard called Chatura Alwis needs to be whipped in public and jailed for crimes against unsuspecting innocent people using cheap psychology.
These issues are not only common to Sri Lanka, just check it, any country that is having unrest is usually doing so because the governments are not people friendly, neither are the military, police or the justice system. Everything is still geared to protect the leaders just like in the colonial times.

        1

        HT,
        Fully agree with you.
        No Qualms!
They (Post-independence leaders) could have done much more for the emancipation of this lovely island country and its people, but one great characteristic of “STATESMAN” -.which is ‘TO UNIFY THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE SELFLESSLY’, was lacking in the leadership!!
Other words, Sri Lanka was DEVOID OF STATESMANSHIP quality in leaders!!!
Instead it was “DOG EATING DOG MALLUMAK” was the leadership Lanka inherited, and continues to date!
Yes, that is the result of 73+ years Independence of this pristine,
pre-dominantly, Buddhist country with 2500 years of heritage!!
The leaders produced are so inept and disabled, they could not achieve any better
        My foot!!

    JF,
    Morning
Thanks for the detailed and well laid out article.
It is timely too because, the general public can see through the ‘ANTICS’ of these cattle rustler type governance.
May be good for those consuming ‘Grass’ as staple food and not Rice!!
Just wondering, how different Sri Lanka would be today, if the latex based industry based in Horana by Hayley’s subsidiary Dipped Products Ltd would have been founded approximately 80years ago to date???
    Serious matter to address.
Will not be helpful and remain a dream or nightmare is it?
If it did happen to be real then, the clarion call and thanks would be entirely due to PREETHI!!!!
    LOVE AN AFECTIONTO ALL!

He always had blood on his hands for a very long time but most of the population was blind to it, as it was Tamil blood. Loved him when he had Tamil blood on his hands and committed war crimes on them and marginalized them but now hate him, as one Sinhalese has been shot and he has brought hardship on them. Something that is largely reserved for the Tamil population from the north and east. They were blind before and adored him, as the victims were Tamils but have strangely regained their sight and now see who he, his family, and friends really are, as the victims are now increasingly becoming the very same Sinhalese who largely adored him, for the atrocities he committed on the Tamils. How ironic.

SivaSS, All nations made from one blood. Acts 17,26 There is no tamil blood or sinhalese blood specially for those mistakenly hoping to be reborn into earth, but only blood groups. It is only the foolishly deceived dictators like hitler, gotler, Pi, Xi who want to eliminate jewish blood and get aryan blood and see what has happened to all of them. Mother’s blood never gets into the baby. Thou shall not murder, thou shall not steal, you shall have no other gods before me, are from the 10 commandments. If these are considered outdated, see what has happened to leaders who ignored and disobeyed them. There is a new covenant exchange in the sinless blood through which all these sins can be remitted. Wisdom is precious.

Gota is immersed in blood. Soaked in blood. Drinks blood. Swim in blood. That is all he is good at. Hell on earth. For the majority fools who voted for him thinking he is a hero and a minority killer now know who he is but too late. He wont easily leave. He has to be removed.

Exaggerations like this make what ever valid point you have seem ridiculous. Gota is going nowhere as you will see.

Broken English is better than a broken back thanks to Sukker Pappa( Sugar Daddy in Norwegian). Is this the reason you are so sad bitter and nasty and want to inflict misery and pain on others?

Pandi Kutti’s English is fine, but definitely not your paranoid hatred for the Tamils and state of mind. Especially if you are living in the UK, as you should know better.

      Black Lankan,
“For the majority fools who voted for him thinking he is a hero and a minority killer…”
      —-
Majority of Sinhala Buddhists voted for Gotabhaya Rajapakshe not ‘THINKING HE IS A HERO’ but because he is a ‘REAL HERO’ who played a crucial role in eliminating Tamil terrorist barbarians who carried out genocide of Sinhala Buddhists over a period of three decades, bragging that they cannot be defeated militarily.

Like the sweatmeats that the beggar sinhalas gave their barbaric sinhala armed forces as reward for the rapes murders and looting of tamils these sinhalas are already gifting bleeding and dying for the RATPACKses clinging on to power for the immediate future to ensure that them RATPCKses continue to have the ability to loot the sinhala treasury.

A westerner told me that when his firm organised a fund to donate a facility for clean drinking water for some schools in beggar sinhala land and he visited beggar sinhala country he was shocked at the luxurious motor vehicles that the beggar sinhala politicians and officials seem to own and utilize.

Gus you are fond of racially abusing the Sinhalese. It wouldn’t be tolerated in your country, you would be arrested and charged. Of course you are not alone. There are many like you posting on CT. What a disgrace to the Tamil people.

        Svenson,
“Gus you are fond of racially abusing the Sinhalese.”

Gus’ parents have not told him that Sinhala Buddhists accommodated his ancestors in their country when they became Stateless.

Guys who blame Sinhalayo as racists are the worst kind of racists in this planet.

Yes, Gus’s constant abuse of ordinary Sinhalese is a disgrace, and so is your hatred for the Tamils. Make no mistake your anti-Tamil hatred, venom oozes out of all comments you make. We all know what you really want for the island’s Tamils and now even for the Tamil-speaking Muslims.

Gona Eagle HLD, when will you stop your stupid post of repeating the same thing. What a gona you are. Sinhalese asked for these attacks because of their cowardice of killing innocent tamils and even kids from 1956. When they finally took to arms to protect themselves then only modays realised what reaction was all about. Until then it was one way for them to attack civilians. You moron of course ran away with your dhemalu gahani. Ther terrorists are sinhala goons who attacked innocent civilians and Tamil youth were freedom fighters. Just see moron what the sinhala educated enlightened youth are doing and also the moda 6.9 million sinhalese are doing. They are too slow to think or understand. They are slow learners. Now thinking of the next meal. Every fking country your guys are going to beg, evel $200 or $300, any amount welcome, to run a country. If I were you I would have killed myself baang. Have you heard of a country that every morning wakes up and think where to get money for tomorrow to run the country.
