The former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his family members and his henchmen who misused the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) aircrafts during the Presidential election campaigning period will have to pay their bills.
SLAF helicopters and fixed-wing aircrafts have been exploited at the whims and fancies of the Rajapaksas and some of the Ministers of the former regime, which has resulted in a loss of millions of rupees.
“We will call upon the passengers who used the SLAF aircraft and helicopters to pay for the trips. We will also investigate how only selected persons were allowed this facility.” Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake told the Sunday Times.
Last week former Minister Wimal Weerawansa, who used the SLAF aircrafts on seven flights told the TNL network that the fares for the SLAF flights should be paid by President Sirisena, the leader of the SLFP and General Secretary Anura Priyadarshana Yapa. He has been campaigning for ‘their’ party.

This is why countries have a care taker government after an election is called preventing the government in office abusing state resources to create an unfair advantage.
Unless a proper budget was in place and the office bearers of the UPFA approved it they are not responsible for the bills.
File a case against them and freeze all their Personal assets. If the court decides that the individuals should pay, auction their frozen assets if the bills are not paid on time.
To do this, the minister in-charge should have a backbone like the minister of power & energy.
