Hip Deep In Shit – A Brisk & Brusque Verdict

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath De Alwis

A Verdict Earned

President Maithripala Sirisena has earned the verdict given in local government polls. He appointed candidates defeated at the parliamentary elections through the national list and made them cabinet ministers. In electoral democracy, failure is decisive. Overturning the people’s verdict has a price.

The verdict rendered at the local government polls is brisk and brusque. Brisk means quick and sudden. Brusque means blunt and rude. The people have quickly and suddenly decided to halt the Maithri-Ranil circus. The astounding margins with which the people have repudiated the ‘yahapalanaya’ of the President and the Prime Minister is conclusive evidence that the people have been blunt and rude. Hence the brisk and brusque title ‘Hip Deep in Shit’.

We can draw some satisfaction from the fact that we now have systems in place to hold free and fair elections. Democracy presumes that we are all rational creatures. All who vote at elections can relate truth to reality and vice versa. Identifying truth is not easy in this age of instant news, gossip and kite flying. It calls for prudence, courage and one’s own idea of virtue.

People are wise

We who are impudent enough to comment on voter behavior often forget that people are wise. The President’s principal platform was on his determination and ability to eliminate corruption. He promised to punish the corrupt in this government and those in the previous government. The Prime Minister assured that crooks will be punished, loans will be paid back, jobs created, and everybody will be wired to Wi-Fi. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s task was much simpler. The regime that replaced his is equally or more corrupt. They are inept as well. Mahinda’s claim resonated. No one would claim that he was inept.

When election results are excruciatingly discomforting, the temptation to interpret them is irresistible. Politicians and political parties are good at misinterpreting dismal performances.

President Sirisena under interpreted and over interpreted his mandate according to his personal whims and political fancies. He promised to be a single term incumbent and then decided to fortify his powerbase for 2020. He voluntarily reduced his term and later sought Supreme court ruling on the precise expiry of his term.

Preaching and Practice

He condemned nepotism and family bandysm. “If you were to ask me how I became the common candidate I don’t think even I could give you a proper answer. I see this as some sort of a miracle. I was a part of this Government with a lot of heartache having witnessed rampant corruption, nepotism and family bandysm which is a part and parcel of this government.”

One of his first appointments was that of his brother to the top job in Sri Lanka telecom. His son in law has an assignment with the Ministry of Defense. He never tires of reiterating his commitment to fight corruption. He publicly reprimanded the executive head of the Bribery Commission for producing retired defense high-ups before a magistrate. The director general of the CIABOC resigned.

The Common Candidate for the Presidency was a civil society creature. Civil Society expected the elected President to adhere to the agreed policy agenda. The hybrid government was a two-headed donkey that was stalling. Civil Society activists soon discovered that the President had his own advisors. Affairs of state were of such import and significance that they required analysis by more astute minds than those of some well-meaning academics and idealistic activists. It was time to jettison civil society dreamers of ‘yahapalanaya’.

Ranil’s Manifest Destiny

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesnghe is a man convinced that ruling this island nation is his manifest destiny. The success of the common candidate was therefore a bitter pill to swallow. The hybrid government was a farcical orchestration. A selected coterie held all strings and the puppet at the top was expected to conform and comply. Thanks to Sobitha thero’s insistence the 19th amendment has lifted the lid. The Bond Scandal unraveled over two years.

Mahinda’s brother in law lost billions running the airline for seven years. Crony Charitha’s brother seems determined to match that performance and has succeeded admirably in the last three years.

The last three years are qualitatively different from the years under Mahinda Rajapaksa presidency. If we did not mind his business, he left us alone. He held elections and won them fair and square by persuading people with whatever it took for him to win. He didn’t rush elections. He went about the business of elections quietly and patiently. He was not stupid enough to hold island wide elections in the middle of a presidential term which could be construed as a test on performance.

Since 8th January 2015, we have been subject to naked manipulation, blatant lies, systematic spin and downright dishonesty. In Mahinda’s time we were informed or directed. Mahinda did not preach. In contrast there is no end to Maithri’s sermons and Ranil’s lectures. Mahinda’s coercive state apparatus was anchored to reality. He was the arch pragmatist not seduced by idealistic trivial.

The Inconvenient Truth

Maithrpala Sirisenas benign governance is totally detached from reality.

Political truths are terrible to deal with. Post-election truths are not only terrible but are mind boggling. The mixture of fact, opinion and conjecture that partisan analysts resort to are not worth our attention. Plain speaking is the need of the hour.

The people have given their verdict. Honest crooks are better than dishonest crooks. Skim off on contracts with foreign parties. Don’t rob our pension funds. Naked ambition is preferred to ambition wrapped in false altruism. Better to have good war winning crooks than crooks who shield other crooks.

        Ben,

I think Sarath is an old “leftist” …………they never die; just fade away :))

Some in my family have studied under Carlo Fonseka and have nothing but the highest regard for him as a person …………….but he is an irrationally partial “leftist!” …….a little foolish for a man of his intellect………

It’s a free world and Sarath is free to express his opinion …………I have a lot of regard for him than you know who :)) ….. I like him for the pieces he has written about Buddhism in SL ……..the march towards secularism is more important for the nation than any political personality/personalities.

Ranil attracts more ire than he deserves ………..and Mahinda attracts more love/admiration than he deserves ……….so what else is new? Donald Trump became the president!……….. It’s just “mental tricks” people play on themselves…………….

Mahinda is over 70 and can never be the president again ……….Ranil is not much younger and perhaps will never be the president….

Here today gone tomorrow …………..beyond them what? ……….any long-term blueprint for the nation beyond the usual personality-politics? Without this business of waiting for a messiah?

Another defeat under the “GREAT” leadership of Ranil.

According to Shyamon (in Australia) Ranil’s time is yet to come. The people (in Sri Lanka) have decided otherwise.

Time to go buddy, sometimes you are never good enough and you have had since 1994 and you have proven beyond any doubt, you don’t have it!

Ranil’so time has come. It’s time to go.

Too reliant on ancient fossils and cliqueish to boot , he has paid the price for ignoring that the future lay with the intelligent youth. There has been no succession planning and whoever the chosen youth have proven very ordinary .

If Ranil’so lot is now the doghouse, well he has only himself to blame.

I hope Ranil will leave behind the 2 brand new cars he has just bought out of tax payers money when he exits from his office. The man likes his luxuries and bound to claim them as personal property gifted to him on his retirement. Beware, Naga is watching, I bet!

How could you say Ranil Lost. When this Yahapalana Govt came to power most of the Councils were under Mahinda .Due to their time was over councils lapsed.
Now under Ranil U N P got More Councils than what they Had before.
Mahinda scored more because of SLFP Ministers. They hve not done their part. They could not give Manure to farmers. NO water for farming. That is why Farmers abandon Yahapalanaya .> if President wants to change those SLFP ministers should be replaced with farmer friendly Ministers

Why didn’t Sirisena and Ranil, investigate the previous regime, who got away with their ill gotten gains, and get some justice for the Sri Lankan people? Why was only Ravi K investigated? Why have the scoundrels from the previous regime allowed to get away with their crimes, even murder? Why is Sirisena shielding those crooks?
What kind of games are they playing?

Sirisena was not shielding the crooks, it was Ranil. he was the one that did deals with Rajapakshas at the dawn of 9th Jan 15 at the Temple Trees.

Dear Sarath: ” PEOPLE ARE WISE” you said in a headline of a paragraph. Do you really think so? The 98.5% “Literate” people have confirmed the latest RATING assigned to Sri Lanka by EU. The entire voting centered on ONE PERSON who three years back rejected and deposed for well known and documented cases of corruption, fraud, waste, nepotism, dictatorship and mismanagement. Some say that verdict was a show of discontentment on the performance of the present regime. I completely disagree. If it is a show of discontentment, the verdict should have been an intelligent and a forceful one in favor of a contestant who stood firm against corruption, fraud, waste, nepotism, dictatorship and mismanagement. In that absence of intelligent and wise decision making, the voter obviously corrected a “Mistake” (he/she perceived,) made on Jan. 8th and August 17, 2015 and re-iterated the “Genetic” instinct of “Slavery” in “Hero Worship” , invigorated with the campaign named “Nugegoda Man” and attached slogan “Bring Back Mahinda”.

Nugegoda man didn’t speak in 2015 Parliamentary s elections.
Nobody knows what Nugegoda man said this time.
        Nobody understand his language.
Please don’t read too much into what the Nugegoda man said and intended to say.
Its too early to speculate or rejoice.

As the writer says, “Better to have good war winning crooks than crooks who shield other crooks. ” meaning people want blood, especially the Tamil blood this time around.

In essence are you saying the Nugegoda man is a blood thirsty crook?

The present government has 2 more years to go. This is a very good lesson for MS & RW for protecting the Rajapakshe criminals. At least now they should fulfill the election promises.

Sirisena / Ranil drama ends in a box office catastrophe.
Ranil has proven that he is a political failure time and again and no economic wizzard as portrayed through propaganda.
One thing he he had proven and exposed. That he is a silent master mind and a crook.

Its time to handover the UNP to a young and an energetic leader like Pathirana whom Ranil has sidelined or Maithree Gunaratne.

We should remember this local authority election was overdue for decades and the govt couldn’t delay anymore. If you all look at the 2015 Presidential election Mahinda got 48% of total votes and Maithiri got 51%. The votes for Maithiripala did not come from SLFP. He got the votes from UNP, Muslim Congress, TNA and only a few from SLFP. Whatever the vote gone to Mahinda in 2015 remains the same. Only difference is the name is different (SLPP). The votes given to Mahinda in 2015 was for his stand on anti-Tamil. The propaganda for this local election by SLPP is the same anti-Tamil. Almost all the leading Buddhist Monks were against the proposed constitutional change. So, how can we claim it is a landslide victory for Mahinda or SLPP when they couldn’t get more than they got in 2015? If SLPP would have got two-third majority, you can call it as a landslide victory? It is true, people have concerns about the current regime? People have concerns about economy, living standards, corruption, inaction against corruptions and misuse of power etc.

    • 7
      1

The votes for Maithripala did not come from the SLFP. Thank you for pointing that out. Maithripala was not the SLFP candidate! Can’t you see this?

      • 1
        0

Didn’t you know that? He was and he is a SLFP member. He did not contest as a SLFP candidate for presidency. He was a common candidate against dictatorship of Mahinda who misused the SLFP for his personal gains. SLFP cannot be SLPP. The policies are completely different. Mahinda is not the SLFP now. Buddhist Fundamentalists are on the side of Mahinda.

        • 2
          1

What moral right does MS has to be the president of SLFP? Isn’t that why people have rejected it? The SLFP voters have gone and voted for SLPP because that is where real SLFP is. Voters know it better than the fake analysts.

    • 5
      6

Bullshit. Racist Tamil Segregationists are still voting for them while having the cake and eating it too in the south. Mahinda was against TAMIL TIGERS and we are grateful he wiped them out. So stop pretending you Tamil people do not have racists and casteist backward people in the North and East either.

    • 4
      1

Don’t just count popular votes which BTW is 45% for SLPP v UNP’s 32%. But on Local Government institutes SLPP now control over 70% whereas UNP’s control is for 13%. It is a landslide victory for SLPP, whether you care to acknowledge it or not.

Now stupid Sirisena has to use his sword to do hara-kiri on him. He thought by hitting MR and Ranil, he could come on top. All gone in the winds. Because of his low actions both went down in the shits. If he stayed away from back stabbing the UNP, he could have saved both himself and Ranil. Even his SLFP comrades had secretly worked for MR, and let him down badly. When he embraced all of them, it was very clear that they would lead him into the garden path. If he goes to MR, he would kick him on his ass, and he has to go on his four legs to UNP to pull himself up from shit mountains. All what happened is good for him. Ranil is very arrogant, and he should get away from his Royal Club, if he is to salvage his party. If they use their heads, still two years more to go, and he and Sirisena could do something to come out of this mire.

    • 1

Unfortunately the momentum has shifted. MS+RW have no chance. Both need to be replaced with new faces to at least have a fighting chance.

  • 10

Well written and to the point. This election was lost by Sirisena led SLFP than a win by MR led Bud. Everyone knew that MR and his govt was corrupt but people understood Sirisena and the cronies he brought into the govt were corrupt and incompetent.
As usual Sirisena will blame Ranil but he is not the one that was protecting the crooks and murders of the old govt and he is not the person that promised the people that they will see justice.
Even in the UK case we saw how incompetent he was. Ministry makes a decision and he over rides making an ass of himself. I am happy with the SLFP results.

Most importantly Mahinda is do-er. A workhorse. Decision maker. Straight to the point – no nonsence. Strong leader. Down to earth and always amoung his people. Strategic thinker. None of these qualities are with Ranil or Maithree.

I am waiting for the Australian Shyamon to spin this. And for Jehan P .with US funding to also spin this. Both UNP and SLFP got their arses whupped. • 3
    1

Most comments are stupid and analyzed as per their wish. SLFP, as a major party, may have done bad because it is highly divided and look Maithripala sirisena was also covering. Taken alltogether, SLFP has won. because even earlier, MY3 had told that SLPP and SLFP would gang up. WHAT about UNP, A major party. . It lost big time I suppose. UNP, JVP and TNA cannot make a govt if all are added together.Voters are not dumb. they know Yahapalana govt did not do anything and they just talking. Now the question, at least now, whether the president takes decisions remove the crooks and accellerate what ever need to be done. Because, next is his turn. Now it is time for the president to breakaway from the Yahapalana govt. He can invite good members of UNP and make a good govt with SLPP remiving crooks to the babk bench or firing them. Mahinda Rajapakse’s win is a protest vote and not because of his activities and the problem is voters do not have proper choice. IT is from that one to this one which need to be stopped. If president fails to that change, some new party would do it but not a thief like Basil Rajapakse. HE fails in every way.

    • 1
      0

Basil Rajapakse was the genius organiser behind SLPP lanslide victory. He said at the inception that he takes the blame for the defeat of 2015 and WILL make amends for it. He has done it. He will achieve a bigger win in the next round of PC elections or a general election whichever comes first.

  • 3
    1

I think, Ranil is immaterial now. It is time for the President to reorganize SLFP and the cabinet. Remove National list MPs from SLFP. Appoint new cabinet. Invite UNP back benchers who are not corrupt. Rewrite the SLFP- party constitution allowing new comers to come up simply based on ability by allowing them to debate infront of SLFPers. Arrest thieves. If not it is president who has to answer for the voters. I think there is a group of UNP back bencher who reqauested president to organize a new govt. Ask the new comers to come to new – SLFP.

  • 3
    1

I think real winners are the people of minority communities. Now they have a home made solution by which every community has been empowered. I heard, Tamils are happy as they are no longer under the high caste and they have their village govt. IT looks Maithri did not lose at all. He has given a home made solution to people. UNP lost because they did not remove thieves. Now, it is time for Maithripala sirisena to take over everything. Mahinda Rajapakse may make the argument that he did not steal and people acceptd him. that is not true. Because, Sri lanka did not give a choice to the voters. As both the SLFP or SLPP as well as UNP are corrupt they went to the next point which is this govt did not do anything to the people as they have economic probems and govt did not attend to anything. some how people were intelligent to neglect UNP as they are also new thieves.

    • 2
      0

It is this government that laundered Mr Rajapaksha. He can rightfully claim that he did not steal, because this government completely failed to stick any charges or to take any wrong doers to court. They did deals with wrongdoers, protected them, and even rehired people like sajin vaas gunawardana, presumably to employ as brains for crooked work, now on behalf of the present day crooks. It is this governmnet of Ranil W that cleaned MR and all his accolytes of all their sins; So, yes Mahinda can claim that he had done nothing wrong, that people have accepted him, and that the votes are the proof of his claim.

    • 0
      0

Jimmy, not a convincing argument. Why didn’t voters select JVP if this is merely a protest vote?

  • 2
    2

as it was shown erlier, this election looks a clear victory for anti-corruptions forces. Most rural voted against UNP. Only the urban minorities have voted UNP for their interests.

Elections are only Legos in the Lankawe political games. These elections have thier own multi-dimensional attributes.
These Elections are the referendums to Pogroms. These elections are the precursor to anti West and anti UN anti-civilized world parades and protests. These elections are the religious Ayatollahs installers to Buddhism only republic. These elections are the patrons of laws from Sinhala Only, MMDA, Standardization, No women allowed bar and restaurants…. To many others

The money flying during these elections is small economy recover plan. They offer seasonal jobs from pantry cooks through illegal distilleries operators, drug peddlers to fire cracker manufacturers, Stage builders, speech writers, bodyguards and ……. At the end, the crowned royals and acolytes enter into their kingdoms and rule with majesty. This is not a democratic election at all. Democracy is only for civilized world. Machine guns and rifles guarding the election booths do not make democratic election. People do not have choices to make selection. Basic anti-minority voting principle delivers only looters, rapists, genocide criminals as the only candidates.
There is not one single Racist Colombo media is ready to bring out a message, “Hey guys, we manufacture a civil war, we fought a Civil with the direction international countries, we are in the court of International countries for fighting their war. It is time to tame us and move away from these messes”. Then only a candidate would open up his mouth and propose a new path to Travel. The media has been weeded & cleaned by the Old Royals for 10 years. Left behind are mainly pure slaves of the war criminals. Some of them are, like a drunkard woke up from a sleep, just singing Lasantha’s name or Eknaligoda’s name. But none of them are ready to from even an agitation group with Sandhya or Lasantha’s brother to have their murder investigations accomplished.

A joke said about an Arabian (The name “Arabian” is because of the story’s back desert, no prejudice) guy who went out on a journey through the desert. His pet, followed him, fell down and died without food or water in the mid of the desert. The Arabian was sitting by the side of his dog and crying. A passerby that way came to the Arabian and said “I feel sorry for you Pal, anyway how did you little angel die?” Arabian with a choking voices replied “No food or water sir, Desert Journey no?” The man notices a big bundle near the Arabian and askes “what is that? “ Arabian politely replied yes sir that is food and water for me”. Disappointed passerby angrily asked “couldn’t you have spared a little bit of that for the poor dog”. How could I do that sir, my journey is not jet finished, if I give it to the dog how do I finish my journey?” The passerby promptly left the place without disturbing the Arabian to cry for his dog. Colombo media journalists are crying for Lasantha and Eknaligoda, but have their support bundles reserved to their war crime Heroes. “Eknaligoda and Lasantha supported the terrorist, no? Isn’t he finished war? How do you prosecute then?” That is the question they ask. These are the journalists bringing out democratic election message to build a Dictatorship Republic to maintain racial tension and warm them up on that. The West is trying to use these elections to power change.
Laptop Colombo Media journalists and the 8th Grade Lankawe Parliamentarians, matching jar and the lid, are conducting elections to install democratically elected dictators.

Mr. Sarath De alwis: You are a Senior journalist. Please check this story. victor Rathnayake’s second wife is caught in Jewellaery stealing case. The value is Only Rs 138 miilion. How do dthey got months or years to find out until she leaves. did not they have CCTV camaras. I heard the real story very different. Anyway, she is in the jail and they are investigating it. Some of the Real culprits some should be in the bak itself are stil outside. Anyway, both Ranil and Maithripala Sirisena are silent about RAVI the LIAR who had two money laundering cases. He got bribes from Aloesius, He was caught ,ieing. Yet he is still not arreested. It is well known both money laundering cases were solved by him being acquitted because they canged the legislation. With respect to victor Rathnayake’s wife’s case, I heard the replacing Jewellary with Fake ones is not rare all over the island and in both Banks. Most probably senior politicians are aware but they are not taking action. I think only way to solve is if people can take CLASS ACTION SUITS against everybody. I heard both very senior politicians are involved in the bond scam, probably they also have bags underneath their beds. another senior politician or politicians are aware something about this.

Really good analysis. But it left out one crucial point. That the majority of Sri Lankans who anyway suffer from amnesia, love the “MARA CHARITHAYA” who always parades around with a persona of false public relations. However bad Ranil and Maithri are the vote could have been given to the JVP headed by Anura Kumara. Unfortunately malnutrition has deprived the masses of critical thinking. I feel sorry for the country which has this kind of polity.

    Where is that Australian Shyamon???

So Sir, – is Ranils time yet to come??

Keep hoping in vain, and actually- its really ok by us if the UNP want to keep flogging a dead horse! It helps us bury this unpatriotic and racist “grand old party ” UNP for GOOD!

All the lies uttered by Ranil & Sirisena proved wrong.
People did not believe Rajapakse regime robbed the country.. They did not believe Rugger player, Lasantha and Ekneligoda were killed by Rajapakses. They believed .Welikada prosoners killed each other.. and Gota was not involved in that operation.Army and STF did not fire a single bullet. They believe Cabral was the best governor of Central Bank.
They thought MIG deal was Big Lie. They believed the Story of Daisey Aunty. was gospel truth. The Avanguard story was planted by FCID to discredit Gota.

Mahindas Brother in Law tried his best to improve Srilankan and Mihin Air. But Ranils supportes in the Airline frustrated his efforts. So the People Voted Mahinda.

Actually where it went right for JO is the wrong calculation by Sirisena. Sirisena strongly believed that UNP will win 45% , SLFP 20% JO 25% respectively. So that he can jointly govern the majority of local bodies with UNP. In case UNP tries to be smart he will switch to JO to govern the Local body. He overestimated his personal popularity. He failed to realize MR’s Ground to earth touch. People from all walks of life like MR and never want to see him harmed or ridiculed. RW or MS or for that matter any living politician in SL cannot match the popularity of MR.

We also should understand no one to match Gota in governance. Gota is not a political force or a person who can read people’s mind. But MR behind him he will succeed. See Tamils and Muslims start feeling that MR is better that Rajitha, SF, Patali and the crooks. They realized these three people along with CBK manipulate power to take revenge on MR.

All politicians who govern the country either in govt. or opposition are crooks one way or other. Otherwise why they are so keen to be in power.

People are right. They voted for the less corrupt and less dangerous people to deliver at least 45% of the needs they look for in day to day life.

SLPP led by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa secured just over 44% of the total votes and this was below the number of votes Rajapaksa got at the last Presidential elections (47.58).

LG election results showed that more people (55.35%) voted against the SLPP and not for the SLPP (44.65%).
