The former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga last night said that she was the architect of Sri Lanka’s recent change. Kumaratunga, in an interview with Sirasa TV, discussed extensively about her experiences in relation to the Rajapaksas’ politics and the internal issues of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. She also expressed her views on the political future of Sri Lanka.

You yourself said in the interview that Your Government but not yourself alone (unlike MR claiming credit to himself) did a good amount of clearing in the Northern Province from the clutches of the Tigers. But you claim credit, alone, for the recent political changes in Sri Lanka. You may have played a significant role in that exercise but I don’t think you alone could have given command to that gigantic task. It is no secret that many, both inside and outside the country, Sri Lankans and non Sri Lankans, wanted the MR regime out for various reasons. Each of them had different agendas. You too had an axe to grind, perhaps justifiably.
Just as much as ordinary Sri Lankans and residents of Sri Lanka bore all the inconveniences and dangers during the Tiger War and thereby being contributors to the victory of the War in no small measure, a good amount of voters here opted for a regime change without which no change could ever take place. Hence a major share of the credit should go to the people and not you madam for the change, although your contribution is significant.
