‘I Don’t Know You, Don’t Accuse MOD’ Gota Threatened Dr. Nirmal

By Colombo Telegraph –

“Catch the suspects and hand them over to the police” the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabhaya Rajapaksa told Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri, last Friday.

Gotabhaya

“I received a call from Gotabhaya,  the conversation initially appeared to be cordial, though later it turned into a bitter exchange” the president of the Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA),Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri told Colombo Telegraph.

Calling to Nirmal’s home telephone re the threats Dr. Nirmal is receiving, Gotabhaya said, he even didn’t know who the Nirmal is and therefore accusing MOD is pointless. Dr. Nirmal replied Gotabhaya saying, whether he knows Nirmal or not is irrelevant and the MOD’s job is to protect citizen’s security” Nirmal Ranjith’s claims at the Friday press conference is “damaging MOD’s reputation” and  asked him to “catch the suspects and hand them over to the police” angry Gotabhaya threatened Nirmal.

Dr.Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri is one of the few outspoken intellectuals who criticises Sri Lankan government regarding it’s unlawful activities.

Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Devasiri is the only university teacher who criticised Secretary to the Ministry of Defence regarding abduction and whitvanning.  Speaking about abduction of Prema Kumara Gunarathnam and Dimutu Attigala he said “ the fist accused is the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, there is no Secretary of Defence post in Sri Lanka it’s a lie. He is just another secretary to a Ministry. There are lots of other secretaries like him, the only difference is, he is a sibling of the President,  he must be questioned. …..” ( watch 6.20 mins in the video below)

Gotabaya aka the white van goon, prince of the paranoid, is running amok! Calling Dr. Nirmal @ home is intimidating enough! Telling the victim of state intimidation and terror to catch the perpetrators of violence is a joke. Gota has 20 % of the budget under his control for the strangely named Ministry of Defense and Urban Dev. and has been militarizing POST WAR Lanka to the hilt while the Higher education sector gets only 1.8 %, so the question may be asked why do we need such an expensive security establishment if they cannot find the terror-mongers? Send Gota to the Hague. SL needs to be liberated from these uneducated Rajapakse Borthers and Sons soon! They encapsulated the HUB OF IGNORANCE, forget about knowledge hubs!

Yes the connection between a swollen budget for Defense to keep the Rajapakse family safe, CORRUPTION and the cultivation of a HUB OF IGNORANCE and DECEIT – nice turn of phrase – and the underfunding of Universities must be made. Where has the post-war economic dividend gone? Into Rajapkse and Shiranthi’s families’ pockets through Corruption the hidden signifier in the S&P assessment of Lanka’s current economic jeopardy. Corruption of the Rajapakses family may be broken down in three parts 1) military Business for Gota the Goon who controls the swollen defense budget and is building among other things golf courses for MILITARY BUSINESS 2) TOURISM BUSINESS for Basil and cronies. 3) SPORTS BUSINESS FOR THE BRAT NAMAL AND SHASINDSRA (car races, beach games, rugby seven,Carlton Sports Chanel). These are the sectors of the Rajapakse business empire enabled by transfer of public funds and accumulating national debt which is converted into PRIVATE WEALTH OF THE RAJAPAKSE FAMILY, that are single handedly looting Sri Lanka and indebting the people. Cultivating the IGNORANCE OF THE MASSES through denial of the RIGHT TO INFORMATION and the underfunding and politicization of education is part of the Strategy of the Rajapakse Dictatorship. Meanwhile,

    Dear Vama,

Do not give up the elimination of this corruption family government, Tell Nilmini and Parakarama. We will help you to continue your process.

      0

Who are Vama, Nilmini and Parakarama? And what process are you offering your help to continue? Who are you anyway? Whose “University Friend” are you? Do you know this Nirmal Devasiri who is being terrorised, not by Gotabaya Rajapaksa, but by the LTTE rump?

By the way, what Mr Rajapaksa seems to have told the frightened union representative Nirmal Devasiri is that any people lurking in his premises are nothing to do with the Ministry of Defence or himself, and that he should identify the people involved and report it to the police. Sounds like sensible advice to me. I’d imagine he said it directly and clearly. He is, after all, a military man.

Don’t get scared about white vans, guys. You have more reason to fear the LTTE rump – they are, after all, the Sri Lankan experts in creating fear, terror, paranoia and panic (not to mention convincing propaganda).

“Heh – Heh_heh… Lasantha, who is Lasan… heh_heh… who is Lasantha?”

Those who watched and old interview of Gota with this question would never forget the heckling response Gota made, and the apparent signs of guilt on his face and voice..

You are right. It was disgusting to see him dismiss a murder so casually. There is absolutely no regard, concern, nor outrage, about any of the senseless killings of journalists or activists in our country.
That by itself speaks volumes. This is a ruthless bunch. Poor Sri Lanka.

If this was the case, in the place where I am – Germany/Switzerland/France, the victims are not the one who should catch the accused and hand over to the police.

And the personal involvement of senior official of the defence ministry is ridiculous and noway the case.

But senior police officers react promptly depending on nature of the issue.

However, as I already read Dr. Nirmal is not just a public servant but the president of FUTA. It is therefore his accusations should closely be examined providing him with security as necessary if the issue is proved to be life threatening.

Not only that, in that interview Gota said Lasantha was an editor of a tabloid paper and went into a bout of loud laughing – this made me very, very sad.

I have GOT An ideal who is behind all these murders and kidnapping!!

Quiet agree with you here – in terms of GR behaviour on that HARD TALK INTERVIEW. This reminded me to what Former President Premadasa answered in a BBC radio interview following the 89 Insurgency – Premadasa was questioned whether he as the head of state his forces killed the JVPrs, as I still remember it – he without any fear said ” of course we did “.

Amazingly, there are dimwits who are still trying their best to find excuses for the rouges-in-power. Unable to construct a coherent argument they throw around accusations hoping to create some doubt in people. A truly pathetic scene.

I suppose these dimwits must be solely dependent on the crumbs thrown about by the rouges-in-power and would probably die of hunger if they left to earn a living by their own capabilities.

I would have thought threats against university teachers should be the responsibility of police rather than the Ministry of Defence. And why is it so intimidating to get a direct phone call from the Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, so he could clear the matter up personally. It would never happen in Australia. I wish it would. Our military leaders and civil servants don’t show the same concern for members of the public when they are threatened. I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. Some people seem to be getting paranoid about Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Or twisting his words and actions for ulterior motives.

I believe purpose of GR ^s call to the Dr was not to clear the matter with him but to threaten him, also focusing on Dr s remarks on GOTA in the previous interview with press.

And this is not the first time that GR reacted in this way- as Rohan commented above- it is AGRESSIVE nature of GR.

Dont talk arrant nonsense Senewiratne. You are engaged in the whitewashing of this government’s actions. More shame you, bing a “Dr’ apparently as it were. Did you get your ‘doctorate’ from a technical college here?

In Australia, do you get the Australian police telling the victims ‘catch the culprits and hand them over to us?” Where does this happen in a civilised country? Even here it did not happen until these Medamulana goons took over.

Don’t make us laugh. Do you think that we are all ‘konde badinna cheenu’??

      • 0
        0

Ainsley, I cannot understand all of your Sinlish. What do you mean by “Medamulana” and “konde badinna cheenu”? Translate please, since many of us do not understand Singhalese.

No, Ainsley, I did not receive my doctorate from a technical college “here” or “there” (you haven’t made clear where you are writing from and people around the world comment on Colombo Telegraph). I studied for and earned a medical degree at the University of Queensland in Australia, graduating in 1983. My education was paid for by the taxpayers of Australia and I have worked all my life, since graduation, as a doctor in Australia.

I have personal knowledge of police brutality, government sponsored violence and abuse of citizens (especially Aboriginal people, and I have been mistaken for being Aboriginal many times since we migrated in Australia, not long after the nation abandoned the racist White Australia Policy). I have been publicly opposed to Australian mercenaries being paid to fight in wars around the world, and of the repressive psychiatric system, immigration detention system and the monstrous treatment of our Indigenous people in Australia.

So if Australia is an example of what you call a “civilized” country (and it IS as civilized as any other country, in my opinion) you are wrong to think that the “civilization”, (the building of cities) brings freedom and emancipation. Quite the opposite. In cities around the world the freedom and wealth is jealously protected by elites through violence and intimidation by increasingly heavily armed police and “security guards”, while the “public” has been reduced to slavery and consumerism. But I still love cities!

        Ainsley:
Thank you for telling this charlatan/sycophant which end is up! Though, in all fairness, I think he genuinely believes that everyone who reads his claptrap has the IQ of the village idiot and is impressed by his “knowledge.” And PLEASE Dr. S. don’t try to impress everyone with your knowledge of discrimination against aboriginal people both in Australia and elsewhere! Believe it or not, there are people who have experience of working with and empathy for the plight of aboriginal people in many parts of the world who will tell you, in very simple terms, that the problems facing those groups are a hell of a lot more complex than you would have us believe.

This website desperately needs a policy of vetting responses to ensure that blatantly sycophantic crap does not clutter up otherwise interesting discussion and debate.

Anti Boru, yes this chap Romesh Seneviratne is trying his intellectuality on us thinking we are dumbwits. No wonder his father kept him in a mental asylum, the right place for him to be as he knows best of his son’s sickness.

For a person who publicly labels themselves as speaking against lies (“boru” for those who don’t understand Singhalese, means lies) you don’t make much effort to ascertain the truth, do you?

The Aboriginal people of Australia have been subjected to rather more than “discrimination”.

Let me tell you a few things that were done to our Indigenous People here in Australia. They were hunted like wild animals by gangs of white settlers (who were rarely if ever prosecuted or punished for the crime), families of Aboriginal people were herded like cattle over cliffs, their waterholes were poisoned with arsenic, flour laced with arsenic was “left lying around” in the hope that Aboriginal people would “steal” it; their heads were cut off and kicked around like footballs, their babies were killed and wrapped up in pig-skin bladders and kicked around too; one “game” that I have been told about by Aboriginal elders was to nail the umbilicus of an Aboriginal man to a tree and shoot at his feet so he ran around and pulled out his own intestines; cruel White settler gangs would cut off “black” men’s genitals and women’s beasts and make them into purses; they were subjected to slavery on plantations, farms, mines and missions, they were dispossessed of their land, their children were stolen from them by government agents and prevented from learning the numerous, beautiful languages of this continent. They were also deliberately addicted to and poisoned with alcohol and then demonised as lazy drunkards.

Not only were they subjected to systematic attempts at genocide by the White regime in Australia, to this day there has been no public acknowledgement of what was done to them. What I have written is what I have gathered by talking to Aboriginal people and “White” people who knew about this suppressed history over the past 35 years, not from what I have read. Very little has been written about these things – but you are right, many people are working to stop the oppression and exploitation of Indigenous people around the world, and to rescue their languages and cultures from the attempted genocides of the colonial era and for them I have the utmost respect.

You are an ignorant man, “Anti-Boru”, to think that any discrimination the Tamils in Sri Lanka have been subjected to by various Sri Lankan governments is remotely comparable to the genocide of Indigenous people in Australia.

Perhaps following info are useful to Ainsly and others who seem to have no idea about medical doctorates and PhDs.Hard earned degree titles are not comparable to that of MOST KNOWN DOCTORATE of MERVIN SILVA – lanken minister of MRs regime.

Most Australian medical schools confer MBBS degrees. However, The University of Newcastle confers BMed. This degree is equivalent to MB BS and any BMed graduate may practice in any field of Medicine of their own choice including surgery. In Australia, Doctor of Medicine (MD) is an advanced research degree requiring two years’ full time enrolment, compared to a PhD which requires three years’ full time enrolment. The University of Melbourne will award a Doctor of Medicine to their MBBS equivalent graduates as will several others including The University of Western Australia located in Perth.

Seruvila, when writing in English, USING CAPITALS IS THE EQUIVALENT OF RAISING YOUR VOICE (shouting). So what, exactly, are you shouting about?

Also you only need one question mark to ask a question.

“Is it the same that in Australia?” you ask.

My short answer is no. Australia is very different to Sri Lanka. Here, we have a repressive system of behaviour control in operation (called the Australian Education System) that was established by the British Empire, expanded by Winston Churchill, the Masonic British wartime Prime Minister (during the Second World War) and has never been seriously challenged.

The rest of what you are shouting about makes little sense to me.

      Dr. Senewiratne:
Unlike another gentleman who spells his last name the same as you, you are singularly lacking in intelligence.

Or is it pretence that you don’t realise the import of someone like Gota calling someone in this country which is ruled by an iron (Rajapaksa)fist which crushes anything resembling dissent? Have you not heard of what happened at Katunayake, when the fishermen protested in Chilaw and when the JVP sought to hold a peaceful and legal meeting in Katuwana? The single word that comes to mind is DEATH.

Since when is the citizenry of ANY democratic country obliged to corral the perpetrators of crime on the direction of those who are paid VERY HANDSOMELY for doing just that?

Give your head a shake, man. We are not all a nation of village idiots who are going to be bamboozled some Australia-based expert on the rule of law (or what it should be)in Sri Lanka.

To sum up: your statement is truly incredible and I would suggest whoever awarded you a doctorate should seriously consider withdrawing it!

      • 0
        0

No, Boru, I have not heard about what happened in Katunayake or Chilaw. I’m not much interested in the JVP or their protests.

Have you heard about what happened in Bendigo, or Murrumbeena, or Frankston, or Melbourne, or Goondiwindi, or Darwin or Moorooka?

as far as I can see from my distant perspective in Brisbane, the Secretary of Defence (Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa) did not ask Nirmal Devasiri to “corral the perpetrators of crime”. He told him that he and the Ministry of Defence had nothing to do with any threats or suspicious activity he was worried about and that it was a matter for the police, not the military.

Everyone seems to agree that there is a need for demilitarization in Sri Lanka, now that the war is over. I agree. That’s why it’s good advice to follow the directions of Mr Rajapaksa and report matters such as this to the local police, rather than the military. It is their job to look into it and find out what is going on. It may turn out to be the JVP trying, as we call it in Australia, “a fast one”. Or maybe it’s the resurgent LTTE terrorising the poor man. They are, after all, the experts in this sort of thing. Maybe the JVP are working together with the LTTE rump to destabilise the government…just speculating…

“ Have you heard about what happened in Bendigo, or Murrumbeena, or Frankston, or Melbourne, or Goondiwindi, or Darwin or Moorooka? “ what a dumb question to ask Romesh ?

He was referring katunayake and chilaw to show how the regime would react to dissent , then you state I do not know , may I ask you , with all due respect ,Romesh could you please do your home work before you start defending this brutal junta , why are you trying to compare Australia and SL here , are you insane !
I also want to comment about the aboriginal issue, you seem to back the aboriginals as the minorities and the original land owners , who were/are deprived by the white settlers , why do you take a 180 different view on the Tamil issue here Romesh ? I can smell some thing is not right!

Rajapakse family loves the country and they helped to defeat LTTE. However, they are not good to handle money. All of them are greety pigs when they see money. Not only MR family but also members of his wife’s family too use public money as their own. The good example is the chairman of Civivil aviation Wicremasinghe, brother of Shiranthi, who complained 4 million US dollars was stolen from his house recently.
Who can keep such a big foreigh money?. CID must investigae how this money came to his possession. If he says his two sons in Australia gave him this money, those two guys too has violated Australian law.
Opposition or JVP must take this issue to the Australian govt.

Saliya, for the information of those Sinhalese with short memories. Just prior to the revelation of the Tsunami scandal, there was a robbery reported from the residence of MR, where Shiranthi Rajapaksa made a complaint with the Welikada Police that a domestic had robbed a large amount of money from the almirah. Then later withdrew her complaint as it was attracting unwanted attention on the matter. Then only Lasantha Wickrematunge revealed in the Sunday Leader how Tsunami Funds were deposited at the Rajagiriya Standard Charterd Bank with details of the signatories to the account. When it got out of hand MR returned Rs. 84 million of the Rs. 124 million that was deposited in a fixed deposit. I think it is high time we sought employment at the first residence as domestics to get a little cash during these hard times.

This bugger Gota’s aggresive nature was seen, when he was summoned to Court, from the witness box how he behaved in front of the Judge in a threatening manner. The Judge was also funking. Romesh why are you getting ofended when I state the truth? If I am stating falsehood I can understand. By any chance are you related to the Rajapaksas? You are nothing but the ‘Kuliyata kahina type or the the kadey yana type for the Rajapaksas’. We are not talking about your LTTE rump here, for your information mind you.

As someone said above this Devasiri is another disruptive JVPer and nothing more. He may be an ‘intellectual’ by virtue of his PhD whatever his specialist subject is, but that means nothing.

Raj, I am sure you are well aware of how the PhDs are offered by variuos universities in the world. I respect them for hard work done and their acheivements but definitly it is not an intellectual messurement or indicator.

I rember this guy was openly supporting LTTE by Stating them as Freedom Fighters. I do not see anything wrong in giving a tele call but nobody can not threaten.

When you compare the service done for the country I still believe Gota is well ahead.

While Mr Gothabaya Rajapakse’s intention to re-assure Dr. Dewasiri that he had nothing to do with this untenable acton is commendable, the manner in which it was done leaves room for much to be desired. S/Def. Mr Rajapakse could have got an aide to do this. Even on an earlier occasion I am afraid Mr Rajapakse devalued the status of his high position when he personally telephoned a foreign journalist and told him, in his usual acerbic words, he is personally withdrawing the journos visa. Faux Pas of this nature comes in when the holder of the office has not gone through years of training and experience consistent with the high position he has unduly secured for himself.

Gothabaya is extreemly proud of himself as he the 2nd in line to the self appointed king of this country. In greek methology we cand find such kings who had hubis was eventualy destroyed as the exessive pride in onself leads to his or her own distuction. The day will not be far away as the things taking place in this land.

Both Gota and MR trying to play the game they played in north and east with the south also. They are badly mistaken as people are more smarter and experienced in the south. Their age old tactics won’t help and they are been monitored and checkmated on daily basis by media and other source. It’s high time to remove their coats and satake and get down to business of solving people’s burning issues.White van threats, or police arrests, teargas and intimidation are not the answer to people’s legitimate grievances.Follow the democratic path, if not hand over the power to others who could solve them.

I personaly don’t know who is this Nirmal. He may be having a doctorate but it doesn’t say he is an intellectual. If we follow media and make judgment of this man, he is just a ordinary man who has been inflated by media. People with lesser inteligence easily get pumped up with publicity. That is why Nirmal thinks he is match to Def. Sec. Nirmal, we have seen many people like you during our life time. It is time, in my opinion, open your eyes and do a self assessment and try to make sense and do sensible things. It is good for the country and JVP.

Why are you folk so afraid of white vans? I see them daily. Sometimes they don’t have numberplates. I am more afraid, here in Australia, of police cars, sirens and even ambulances (sometimes “paramedics” are used, in Australia, to kidnap, assault and drug political dissidents).

I personally would be delighted to have a phone call from Mr Gotabaya Rajapaksa or President Mahinda Rajapaksa. The interviews I have seen of both brothers, sometimes under hostile questioning (especially by the BBC) has increased my respect for them. I have been especially impressed by their directness…this is not what I’m used to in Australian politicians and public servants.

      Romesh,

This Sinhalese expression “Konde bandapu cheena,” translates as “ponytailed Chinaman,” and connotes someone gullible — someone who will believe anything.

“Madamulana” is the native place of MR and his generations. Is located in the Distict of Hambantota/SL.

Nodoubt, that there are significant masses of lanken popu that share your view in terms of GR behaviour in the interviews to BBC or any other senders. Was the situation different, MR would not have won his elections in his terms. Our people are easily manipulative, naive folk.

Hi Sira, thanks for the translation. Helps my Singhala come back to me. There is a certain irony, is there not, in attempting to insult me as “gullible” using an old racist insult against the Chinese. Especially with the current global cultural and economic situation.

I don’t think it is just naive people who are “manipulated” that admire the Rajapaksa government for defeating the Tamil Tigers and speaking out against the long-standing habit of bullying of Third World governments by the USA and UK. I have a special respect for Professor Rajiva Wijesinha, who I believe is an adviser to the president, and is a Professor of English who fought for the re-introduction of English into public schools in Sri Lanka (this was not the case when I left Sri Lanka in 1976 and is never mentioned by his, and the government’s, enemies).

I realise, of course (and take into consideration when listening to him) that Professor Wijesinha is paid to work for and speak for the government, and uses his formidable language skills to vigorously defend the Sri Lankan government in the international media. This makes him a target for some who are insisting that the Sri Lankan government is committing “genocide” on Tamils who do not speak Singhala.

This is why I have stressed the fact that the official government policy since the end of the war is to embrace and promote competence in all three languages. In my opinion this policy for an enduring peace between the Singhalese and Tamil communities (which I have been urging in my peace plans since 2002) should be given a chance to work by members of the expatriate community. Not just given a chance. It should be actively supported.

There is a great deal that the expatriate Tamil community can do to help the Tamil people of Sri Lanka. I know that this desire to help exists, but is being hindered by mistrust of the government and of the Singhalese people. I hope to be able to contribute to the process of reassuring the world that Mahinda Rajapaska is NOT a “reincarnation of Hitler” as the more extreme of the LTTE rump have been declaring since the Tigers lost the war.

Sira, people are trusting (another word for naive/gullible) all over the world, because it is normal and natural to be trusting. I have always erred on the side of trusting people. I have trusted some who were not to be trusted. Many people, who do not possess Machiavellian minds, cannot understand the minds of evil people. Only those who are educated into an understanding of the prevalence of evil can see what most people “naively” ignore. It is true, Sira, that such trusting people (and, as I said, it is normal and natural to be trusting) can be manipulated, and are, by the unscrupulous. This is so all over the world. What I have seen of President Mahinda Rajapaksa so far does not indicate that he is unscrupulous or evil. He doubtless tries to “manipulate the masses” into voting for him (like politicians everywhere) but that is not a reason to demonise the man.

      Dr. Senewiratne,
      Are you being deliberately naive?
In sri lanka,”white van” refers to a motor vehicle, usually a van, usually painted white in colour, which carries a group of persons who can,and do,kidnap/abduct persons anywhere, at anytime.

Once more I am posing the same question to you. How much do the Rajapaksas’ pay you for services rendered…and do they pay you in rupees or Australian dollars? :O

        0

Mr Dunce, I don’t feel obliged to respond to every insult or insinuation, especially by anonymous people who admit to being dunces. No, I have never in my life been paid a cent (in dollars or rupees) by the Government of Sri Lanka, any member of the Rajapaksa family or anyone else in Sri Lanka. My belief in truth and justice have compelled me to defend the government of Sri Lanka and its employees (military and civilian) against false allegations by the so-called LTTE “rump”.

I’m talking here about the overseas fundraising, propaganda, medical and political wings of the Tamil Tigers which has changed and grown over the years, as the LTTE changed and evolved from a group of Tamil thugs and criminals who murdered and terrorised Tamil people (including rival Tamil leaders) in the Jaffna peninsula to a genocidal terrorist organization that performed unspeakable atrocities in Jaffna, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Vavuniya elsewhere in the north and east of Sri Lanka to people of any language or race if they opposed the “liberation struggle of the Tamil People”, as ordered by Vellupillai Prabhakaran, the cult leader of the LTTE gang. This madman fancied himself as the ruler of a new Sri Lankan Tamil “State”.

As we all know, Prabhakaran engaged in what he imagined was “guerilla warfare” against the Government of Sri Lanka and the Buddhist infrastructure of Sri Lanka. But he and his advisers also drew on expert knowledge on terrorism, propaganda and mind control from experts in these fields. This included techniques used by both the Nazis and the Jews, as well as expert advice by consultants in the USA, UK and Scandinavia. I hope to identify these experts in time, so they can face war crimes charges in the International Criminal Court, along with the masterminds and senior echelons of the LTTE (and ONLY the masterminds and senior echelons of the LTTE). My independent investigations into the Tamil Tigers can be found on my Scribd site.

As you can read in my recent debate with Donald Gnanakone, I was brought up as a “Christian” in the holy Buddhist city of Kandy, and developed deep respect for Buddhism, Mr Dunce. This led me away from my previous Christian beliefs, and, though I do not accept everything that is said in Buddhist literature, I take a dim view to the sort of “Buddhism-bashing” I have read in the Colombo Telegraph. Though I have been a consistent critic of governments around the world (including Australia and Sri Lanka), on this occasion, when I have identified an orchestrated smear campaign against members of the Sri Lankan government and armed forces, coupled with racial vilification against Singhalese people and Buddhists by certain commentators and contributors, I have felt the urge to come to the defence of both the government of Sri Lanka and anyone I thought was being bullied, misrepresented or gratuitously insulted in this forum (though only when I felt the urge to do so – some people deserve to be insulted).

I have read a few comments by you, Mr Dunce and a guy who calls himself “Gamini” that are intentionally insulting. In these comments I have been accused of being a sycophant of the Sri Lankan government and of lacking sincerity and/or sanity. The fact is, I was taken out of the country when I was 15, though I was enjoying my life in Kandy and Trinity College and brought to Australia with no choice in the matter by my parents, with only my older sister for company, in 1975. I retain loyalty to the country and its people. I have very fond memories of Sri Lanka, and have watched, with dismay, images of death and destruction in parts of the island where I walked alone for hours as a child, collecting butterflies, drawing birds while looking at them through my father’s binoculars and shooting “new species” for my feather collection.

I gave up shooting birds when I left Sri Lanka in 1976, and have not fired a gun since 1978, when I finished my schooling at the Church of England Grammar School in Brisbane (the school had a shooting club of which I was a member – we shot targets, rather than living creatures, as I did when I was a child in Sri Lanka).

A gun culture was something I could have continued to be indoctrinated with, like many Singhalese and Tamil youths were in the 1970s. Some joined the JVP, some joined the LTTE, some joined other “armed groups” (gangs, in other words).

Over the years, Mr Dunce, most of these trained killers have stopped killing, or trying to kill…a few have not. Frankly, Mr Dunce, I would be happy to accept payment from the Government of Sri Lanka or anyone else for my work in fighting the remnants of LTTE/Tamil Tigers. I am not a rich man.

From my vantage point here in Australia, I can see a few things that you cannot, Mr Dunce. The same is the case in reverse – you can doubtless see things that I cannot. Suggesting that I am paid to write in defense of the Sri Lankan government you so despise (as Professor Rajiva Wijesinha and other government employees are, of course) is perhaps intended as a slur on my integrity, independence and credibility. Personally, I think I have every right to defend one of the three countries I have called home. Especially in the foreign press. My fight, Mr Dunce, is not against Tamils (and I regard myself as both Tamil and Singhalese in ancestry, heritage, background and genetics). It is against the LTTE and its supporters. These are easy enough to identify from what they write and say.
