IGP Pujith Jayasundara who was accused of threatening his subordinates told a bunch of his close friends that he was not 100 % but 1000% sure that President Maithripala Sirisena would not take any action against him, Colombo Telegraph can reveal today.
A leaked video going viral on social media shows IGP Jayasundara abusing his powers in an incident that had taken place a few months ago, on 11 April 2017. The IGP is seen assaulting a lift operator at the Police Head Quarters. It is reported that he had been enraged that the said lift operator had not followed a meditation program that he had made compulsory for all staff every morning. In the same video the IGP is caught threatening to allegedly rape a female working under him too.
Interestingly the leaked video had all this time been under the possession of the Criminal Investigation Department at the time of the leakage.
At a gathering on Tuesday IGP Jayasundara told a close friend who in turn blurted it out to many “I am the one who saved President’s son Daham when he and his friends went berserk and smashed the Clique night club and assaulted its staff. The President was not in the country at that time. He was very worried and I took care of that problem for President Sirisena. I obtained all related CCTV footage from all the buildings surrounding the Clique night club including their own CCTV footage. I even advised the Maradana Police Station and to the entire Police force not to proceed with any investigations and not talk to the media. I also arranged for President Sirisena to watch the CCTV footage on his return. Then President himself spoke to all the media heads and begged them not to expose the incident, although bloody Colombo Telegraph had by then exclusively carried the entire episode including video footage of the saga. Several social media copied it and then carried the story. Only one daily newspaper published a story about the incident, but they did not mention Daham Sirisena’s name. They referred to Daham as the son of a VVIP. This is how I managed to hush up the entire incident”.
“I not only saved President Sirisena and his son, but I also saved all the Veyangoda gangsters from media exposure who happened to be the President’s relatives” he went on to confess.”Still the Sri Lankan public have no idea about who that VVIP was,” he said.
A close friend had then inquired from IGP Jayasundara: “If after several months this video which was leaked exposing you in full and now the chances are that you may get the sack. If that happens would you also expose Daham Sirisena’s Clique night club saga to the entire media?“
Meanwhile speaking to journalists at the weekly Cabinet Ministers press briefing, Government spokesman Minister Rajitha Senaratne said “The IGP’s behaviour in the video footage is similar to torture. When international organizations’ accuse our police officers of torturing suspects when in custody, we will have no choice but to agree and accept it. This entire incident simply embarrassed our entire Police force”. (Jacqueline Senanayake).

I really never felt the lift incident with the IGP and the lift operator was a hanging matter and an apology with a cup of tea would have been adequate as the lift operator did not suffer any serious injury. Certainly this news went wild, but still not a hanging matter.
But the statement IGP made “I Saved Daham And His Veyangoda Underworld, President Won’t Touch Me” is certainly a hanging matter. He on his own revealed that he obstructed justice. The night club could now make a serious complaint and sue the IGP for denying justice using his vested powers and influence saving criminals.
IGP by his own statement has testified Duham Sirisena the son of the President has committed a serious crime. If not then now everyone knows what Duham has done. On this incident of what Daham and his gang did, but may not be on the recent incident involving the lift operator the President should sack the IGP. The night club operator should charge the IGP for obstructing justice.
There is no difference between the police officer who protected Mahinda Rajapakse’s family member involved in Thajudeen’s murder. Certainly the police officer is not directly involved in that crime. and knows Thajudeen cannot come back to life so felt to save Rajapakse’s family member expecting in the same way as the present IGP thought that the the President will reward him for his favour!
Now if the President Sirisena does not take action Rajapakse should come out strongly when he comes back to power he would put IGP behind bars for obstructing justice!
So actually nothing has changed since Sirisena came to power. All are crooks. Like changing pillows to our headache.

I guess that this reflects the sad reality of what happens in our country. Officials even in the highest circles know that they can get away with abuse of all sorts by “looking after the interests” of those at the very top.
However, let’s face it. The incident by itself involved a victim in a very humble position, and such things happening are not going to result in as important a person as the IGP being removed. That is the reality, and doesn’t mean that the poor lift operators ordeal should be made light of. Of course, what the IGP has done is all humbug. How can meditation lead to positive results if the top guy is so intemperate that he cannot act rationally, quite apart from the equanimity that is required of him in terms of what he himself prescribes?
Over-commenting on this incident will only distract from other, even more pressing problems. However, it is to be hoped that President Maithri, who conducts himself with personal decorum, realises that he loses credibility when he allows such stories to pass without putting his own closest relatives and supposed allies in their places.

Not surprised. I would be interested to know if CV Wigneswaran when in judicial service ever collaborated with this guy. It is common in SL for Judicial/Police nexus to act like mafia in matters especially regarding property. Would appreciate if anyone does some investigative journalism on that. I say this because I spotted some connections between the two and in particular case(s). Because I was personally involved in the cases mentioned, I do not wish that to be a yardstick. Rather I would be interested to know if this is the common behaviour.

There is something not quite credible here. The footages of the IGP vs minor employees have to be proved for authenticity. But the “confessions of the IGP to a close friend” and blurted out by this friend does not sound real at all. Looks like a planted story.The IGP is a superstitious person and such persons never open up.
The fact that Daham is a bit of a problem is well known. The problem is juvenile delinquency but Daham is no murderer or swindler.
The IGP must be protected by the Minister of Law and Order and Southern Development Sagala Ratnayake but he is silent. IGP’s colleagues may be interested in ousting him.
To cut a long story short: One has got to be impartial in judging the person.
