Former President and current Parliamentarian, Mahinda Rajapaksa has vowed to topple the Yahapalanaya Government in 2017 and reclaim power. “I don’t want to be the President, but I can still rule the country, without being the President,” he said, hinting at hopes of becoming Prime Minister.
Speaking to foreign journalists, Rajapaksa said that even though the current coalition government enjoyed a two thirds majority in Parliament, there is a strong possibility of ‘change’ in the future. “Conflicts are already brewing within the SLFP and UNP, and this country can’t go on like this,” he said.

When a journalist asked if Rajapaksa was willing to become Prime Minister under incumbent President Maithripala Sirisena and work under him, Rajapaksa said that if Ranil Wickremesinghe can do it, why can’t he. “After all I have known him since the 1970s,” he said of Sirisena, his former friend turned foe.
Incidentally, the journalists who were invited for the discussion with the former President were served hoppers, which were the same food Sirisena ate with Rajapaksa, the night before his announcement where he broke ranks from Rajapaksa and announced his candidature at the 2015 Presidential Election, which he won, defeating his former leader, Rajapaksa.

I do agree with what Hunu Patiya states. Don’t think he is favoring MR, but only highlighting the fact that MS and RW (especially MS) has let down the voters that elected them into power. I am disappointed by the way MS has dismissed and written off all the work that FCID did, by one politcial statement. It is now clear who has been protecting the corrupt political criminals, and how they have been managing (or manipulating) the public.
Could MR return to power? Yes he could, even if I do not want to see him ever coming back. What does that indicate and what is the “MESSAGE” conveyed to all the Investigative and Law Enforcement units? Then we saw how the Prime Minister alone getting involved in a ” Thank you ceremony” accorded to the Navy Chief who acted like a thug in his involvement in a Labor Dispute in Hambanthota Port. In that particular instance, we could not see the Commander-in-Chief, the President present anywhere to receive his own Navy Chief after completion of a duty assignment. Was that an “ACT” to send a “MESSAGE” to the Commander-in-Chief of the country, the President?
To us, the ordinary folks, this is a period to be cautious and look into the clear picture that is getting painted by a TEAM of crafty, unscrupulous, self seeking political vagabonds whose sole aim is nothing but to remain in power and secure lost power. So it is not such a SIMPLE matter to shun aside as “dreaming” or “fantasy”. It is VERY SERIOUS business and every citizen in the country MUST recognize the inherent dangers in the offing and get alerted to this “TSUNAMI”. Whether MR can be the PM again will depend on the sincerity of RW. Most of the conflicts between PA and UNP is due to Ranil’s insistence to protect his mates such as Arjuna Mahendran on infamous bond scam etc. He now wants to bring in legislation even to protect his friends from future litigation when even the President is not protected from litigation.
These things happen probably with full knowledge of RW similar to the shady manner in which he changed the far more democratic UNP constitution introduced by JR.

I sincerely hope that the declarant is not out of his mind. I am no fan of his and does not wish him back. But where did he get the courage to say the improbable? Because some of the present lot too is also involved in undesirables and thereby a loss of confidence.
While dismissing the comment as a ranting, I urge the present lot to buck up and do some public good instead of sleeping and regain the lost confidence.

MR and cronies are day dreaming. They are thinking after Obama’s exit, the world’s dynamic towards Sri Lanka has changed.
In most of the leading countries which have interest and involved in matters pertaining to Sri Lanka are ruled by the conservative parties. All are members of the International Democratic Union, over 80 parties from various countries, the Republican Party of the USA and United National Party of Sri Lanka are among the founder members, and UNP is the sister party of the Republican Party of the USA. Same token PJP of India too in it. Out going PM of New Zealand is the current Chairman of it and PM of Sri Lanka is one of the vice chairmen, and also he is the Chairman of its Asia Pacific Regional Association.
This too has great bearing on the affairs of the country for UNP is in the government. If MR and cronies try to topple the government by foul and unorthodox ways, they had to face the music from Mr. Modi and Mr. Trump. Already Mr. Modi is very closed to the President Sirisena and PM Ranil, in fact Mr. Trump has invited President Sirisena, and he is going to meet him in coming March. It’s not easy, they have to watch out carefully for there are so many variables going to work against them behind the scene, if they are up to any mischievous activity to destabilize a democratically elected government owing to their hunger for power.
