In The End, There Was Nothing

By Shyamon Jayasinghe

Shyamon Jayasinghe

“A lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”

Storm

Much more than a storm in a tea cup! To a non-discerning person it all seemed like the final battle of the counter revolution. President Maithipala Sirisena, was up in smoke trying to oust Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for no articulated reason . He asked good old Karu but Karu said,”Nope!” He asked Sajith but Sajith said ,”Nope!”The JO boys thought they at last, were seeing a political Nirvana as the cases against them are sure to fall. “Government must resign!” they cried. “Prime Minister must resign!” The mandate is given by the people unmistakably. Ranil-critic Dayan Jayatilleka thought he found gold and Eureka. “Ranil is a tactician in infighting,” Dayan theorised. Dayan always spins theories like that. They never work as they are not derived from factual study of events but by an unquenchable passion to see the last of Prime Minster, Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Joking

What eventually has turned out now? The UPFA spokesperson Minister Mahinda Amaraweera seems to be saying he never wanted to quit the yahapalanaya unity government-ever? “You guys are joking!” President Sirisena smiles and he is seen back again with the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in apparent cordiality. Susil Prem Jayanth has not yet come out; but he will, surely, speak in the same refrain. The SLFP will remain in the fold. The government was never in threat. JO jubilancy was not real. Perhaps, they will have to wait for another day.

Ranil’s Emotional Management

There were many contributors to the return of the facade of unity that is the “national,” or “consensual” government. But one man stands out and that is Ranil Wickremesinghe who won in the end as he kept his absolute cool. JO brethren will say he is no longer Mr Clean; most certainly he is Mr Cool. (I am not borrowing from our cricket hero, Arjuna Ranatunga.) Dayan Jayatilleka’s theory flattened again as Ranil-far from being an infighting expert- had been in this entire stormy saga the great moderator and peace- bringer. The reason is, he had knowledge of things that were in place and things that were to come and he had extra-ordinary emotional management. In all my column writing, I have often shown Ranil Wickremesinghe’s  emotional management at play.  In the entire twenty or so years in Opposition he displayed that it in the hardest of instances: when Mahinda Rajapaksa used his enormous power- gravity and resources to win over as much as 19 UNP Ministers in one shot and was threatening to do fatal damage; when some of his very party men challenged his leadership; when all the odds seemed stacked against the come-back of the Grand Old Party. Ranil never lost his cool and he never castigated his political opponents except on policy.

Since the  seminal work of Daniel Coleman published in his best seller, “Emotional Intelligence,” (1955) the concept of emotional management has become a buzzword in management study. Goleman  pointed out that IQ  is not  much as we think a decisive factor in our thinking and decision making and that our emotions play a far greater role than his commonly acknowledged. The characteristic of emotional management is what defines a successful leader in business management.

In his emotional management and political savviness, Ranil’s political enemies see in him the danger to their plans. He is their number one enemy and so all guns are on him. “He is a looser,” they cried. He must go from the UNP leadership. Of course, he must go at some time in the near future, but if that is this time the collapse of the UNP would be imminent. Had  he gone during the days of his Opposition, the UNP would have been like the SLFP today: in pieces. Like dogs taking away bits of bones strewn all over, different  today are seen taking away the falling pieces of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. Against all the myriad and vehement thrusts to bring him down, and against all the insults hurled against him by his political opponents, Wickremesinghe remained calm like the elephant in the Dhammapada.

Mr Cool in Action Again

Now again, in this senseless storm that appeared to bring down the government and even the country Ranil kept his cool. Remember how he faced a hostile media recently? The mandate for the Prime Minister and his government comes, he explained unruffled, from the General Election of 2015 and that has to keep until 2020. Local government election elections cannot cancel that mandate; it is a mandate for the constitution of local bodies. “I will continue as Prime Minister under the provisions of the constitution and the government  will continue,” he said. “Yes, we have learnt lessons form the local government elections and we will make necessary changes in our approach.” That put everything in a nutshell. “Now, it is tea time and let us all go for tea!” Can you beat that? Observers knew Ranil had things under his grasp.

With President Sirisena, Ranil was never provoked into escalation of conflict. He admonished his other party men not to “drag in the President,” in their public criticism. Throughout the elections process he never uttered a word as reaction to Sirisena’s criticism of  himself and the UNP as a corrupt party. This crisis had been created when the President-so good and sensible until then- decided to launch  himself into a separate force under an SLFP banner. He has to blame  his rotten advisors for that disastrous adventure. It all landed himself and his major partner into a mess; more himself than the partner. Maitripala Sisena, who had positioned himself well in the credibility ladder, suddenly sank into zero.

And after the election and the consequent political fracas, Wickremesinghe took slow, gracious steps in dealing with Sirisena always leaving a respectful space for the latter to discern the reality. Ranil was strong and he was quiet. He stuck to his guns. He knew the law was on his side and that political reality hadn’t transformed

Central Bank Chief Intervenes

The nation is safe for another period of political life. In a timely intervention, Central bank Chief  Dr Indrajit Coomarasway gave warnings: Charumini De Silva reports to the Financial Times: “Dr Coomarswamy  delivering the keynote address at the AMCHAM Business Luncheon meeting held in Colombo yesterday stated: ‘The headline message one could give is until a week so ago, there was a degree of stabilisation that was taking place as far as the economy was concerned. Now we have got to convince the politicians that they have to ‘stay the course’, make adjustments that need to be made to meet some of the urgent needs of the people, within this overall framework that has been carefully put in place.’   Justifying the degree of stabilisation that has taken place, Dr. Coomaraswamy said up to November 2017, for the first time since 1953 there has been a primary surplus in the Budget and this year they are expecting a surplus in the current account of the Budget for the first time since 1987.”

This is also an indirect accolade for government’s economic management thus far. Those in the fold of the yahapalanaya government should be self-conscious of this progress, which is more than words can measure. Effective media management is required. With two years left, government should focus on fulfilling the promises given to the people in 2015. If it fails, today’s sound and fury will be a real predictor.

    Mr. Jayasingha,
“Mr. Cool” is the best description of RW. Not a word comes out that is not well considered.
On the other hand, our other political heavyweights, including Nimal Siripala, the pretender to the throne, are loose-lipped nincompoops. As you say, by next week they will all swear undying devotion to Yahapalanaya. But RW probably knows quite well that their sympathies lie with that fake Sando who distributes non-existent resources among his followers. It is time too that Sirisena admits that he has no real following, even in Polonnaruwa. He should stop trying to carve out his own niche with idiotic policies like not selling alcohol to women.
I don’t know if MR and RW have a secret agreement, but it is high time MR’s gang was locked up and permanently banned from politics. Perhaps we should introduce an IQ test for voters too. Imagine the queues at tuition centres!
IT is time too that media “kingmakers” like Killi Maharaja are firmly put in their place. Sri Lanka should set up something like OFCOM in the UK, which makes sure that News is not mixed up with opinion and self-advertisement.

      Shyamon,

Don’t get carried away………if I were you, I wouldn’t believe a word Coomaraswamy utters …………he lacks the sheer weight of honesty and integrity of the former governor Cabbral and the finance minister Mahinda………. now, would either one of them ever lie?

Sorry to disappoint you, but Ranil just doesn’t have Mahinda’s charisma and star-appeal……….and what more does a leader need? To hell with the economy …….a leader should keep the people happy!

That’s what The Great Mahinda does……bring people into a state of ecstasy …………give them sex without bodies and keep them in a continuous state of an orgasmic high ……..now, can your boy Ranil ever even come close to doing that?

If the people are happy today what else matters? ………..Tomorrow is another day!

And tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,……………

In your safe haven Australia , how many elections could a leader of a political party lose before he is asked to step down and move aside for a more capable person ? One , or two at best . Why the hypocrisy Mr.Jayasinghe ?

Frankly, one part of me is delighted that Ranil is staying on as UNP leader and PM. There isn’t a less formidable UNP personality than him in electoral terms. Even Srima Dissanayaka got a higher percentage of votes in defeat, while pressed into service as UNP candidate in 1994 after the trauma of her husband’s assassination.

Ranil’s retention virtually guarantees the 2019-2020 outcomes.

      Dayan,

You have zero convictions about anything let alone politics. Your shameless existence has increasingly become rather burdensome for the Sri Lankans. You write subjectively such that you are not only confusing the people but also confusing yourself. It is because, at the heart of it all, you are a bitterly twisted individual. You cannot beat the Truth and Decency that you are completely devoid of!

oi, everyone who writes here has an opinion from eelam supporter to Ranil supporter to MR supporter. Learn to tolerate other view points. If you hate it stop reading it. Argue on the points without cheaply attacking the writer.
I know Tamils have lack of tolerance when it comes to the other..learn it at least now

          1

          such,
As usual you talk through your head!

“I know Tamils have lack of tolerance when it comes to the other..learn it at least now”

The Tamils tolerated Sinhala Only, systemic purging of them from state employments and state-sponsored land grab yet the Sinhala like you are not Tolerant but want more! Subjugation of the Tamils is your quest then you have the audacity to talk about tolerance; how hypocritical!

    • 9
      1

      ‘Doc’ DJ,

It’s been long since you have abandoned your great learning and prostrated yourself in front of a set of individuals with not the best track record domestically (among those of reason, intelligence or decency) and internationally.

Amongst them I have least doubt you will appear as the one eyed man in the land of the blind.

Rest assured Ranil would have learnt his lessons from this recent episode and ensure what is good for the country will happen. If so, the electoral power-base of the likes of those who thrive on the misery and poverty of the larger majority will be dimmed.

If you read your own great works in recent times you will ralise how far wrong you have been as far as the final outcome is concerned.

Ranil (whom I don’t personally know) is far too smart, even for the likes of you.

You may want to consider ‘retirement’, not Ranil.

Definitely Dayan, Any leader with an iota of brain cells would not takeover the current status of the economy and pay for the same 20 months down the road, he/she would wait for the ship to sink further, for a sure win in 2019/2020.

Dear Doctor Demented must be enduring wet dreams of his bête noire, going by the volume of his writing about RW in recent days.

The man talks about votes; rich, coming from someone who wouldn’t dare put his wacky ideas to the test to see how many votes he will get. Our poor struggling voter knows full well that all the combined forces of Marx, Gramsci, Castro, et al will not put a buth packet on the table in these difficult times.

He may gush bravely about the benefits of RW staying on, but he is surely hurting that the longer RW ‘holds on’ the longer it will take for the second coming of his own Organ Grinder – that is if the Great Liberator ever does!

      Dayan,
You write a lot of garbage, with your inferiority complex ridden self. Why do you have to continuously write and equate things to the US? There is no comparison to SL with the US, when it comes to the checks and balances of a political system that was established over 200+ years ago.
You have the right to your opinion and to write how and what you please, but refrain from writing garbage just because you can, while using big English words, while trying to further enhance your fractured ego. And, yes, we can see clearly, all of this, and also importantly your dislike for Ranil W.
Perhaps you are waiting for the Rajapakse’s to post you, once again, in some western country so you can enjoy the fruits of western civilization and capitalism, while espousing socialist values to your tormented, ignorant, brethren of Lanka…
Be fair to yourself and to the country! Write about the ten(10) years of ruin during the Rajapakse regime and all the abuse and looting that was done during that time, which should be quite privy to you.
Have you forgotten the White Vans and the killing of journalists and the “hounding & chasing” away of journalists, who have now found refuge here in the US.
Yes, we do know what goes on even though some of us have lived in the US for almost 40 years but have good insight to the happenings of Sri Lanka, from far far away.
      Get Real Man!
Mahen Samuel (yes i am a Sinhalese – a proud one, so do not bash Tamils unnecessarily because my name may sound like one)

MS neither a strategist nor a good communicator to get some support from UNP aspirants to substitute sb who hasn’t lost credibility for RW; who in people’s eyes sacrificed credibility to help his buddies.
It’s the country that suffers because of that.

There’s a proof now that previous presidents were right, not to have sacrificed constitutionally given powers to make political opportunists like the UNP & particularly RW happy.

Good lesson for the next generation politicians.

    oldcodger,
Just let me look at your, ‘I don’t know if MR and RW have a secret agreement’. The answer is in the manner in which you pose it.
    *
There was not much time for an agreement, in the wee hours of January 09, 2015. An agreement is a legally binding arrangement between parties. More likely, it was an understanding between the two.
    *
MS is not a novice. But, his ability to read political manoeuvring has not been honed the same way as with RW or MR. The latter two have the benefit of a hereditary heads-up.
    *
MR will not take risks against RW. Against MS, he will never hesitate.

Why there was nothing was because old Gamarala wanted to save his ass from, arrest if government changes (on charges of constitutional violations on illegal sacking DM Jayarathna and Mohan Pieris). Thieves like SB Dissanayaka freightened Gamaya of this risk and got him to ask the SLFP old guard who can’t go back to their home towns due to shame and no support to wawit for a month. He is saying the UNP-SLFP ‘hora magula’ is still on to give government legitimacy. The backbone-less guardian of democracy, PUK Ranil has got the benefit of hanging on for another month amidst this chaos. He has nothing left in life and therefore doesn’t want to go home decently. Simon from Melbourne is likely to be the only supporter of this illegitimate government clinging on to power without popular backing. Let Gamaya and PUKA sink together in their own shit.

This is a masterly dissection of Ranil Wickremasinghe ‘s strength and his emotional management. Even if the country is still not mature enough to appreciate him, I have no doubt many elsewhere will respect him for these very same qualities.

“In the end, there was nothing” – I suppose fittingly describes the entire Sri Lankan story in a nutshell.

A land so full of promise, it cannot come out of its morass because politicians will not allow it, as they feed like parasites on those imposters – Race, Religion and Nationalism – all for their own survival.

I don’t think Ranil is one of them. Nor will Shyamon, though Dayan J might even spin a yarn to make it seem so!.

There is no denial that Ranil W is a stooge of the Western Powers. The US ambassador was actively involved with the decision making process immediately after the elections results had came out and only then PM and President decided to for go the past quarrels and to be united again.

Without the foreign agents Ranil W is nothing. Ranil W is their best horse in the race and they won’t jeopardize Ranil W for anything else.

You are not kidding, are you?

When you have a all powerful yet a man without backbone and principles as the president of this country nothing will work. As cunning old fox JR once told the western media he was a prisoner of circumstances. It was euphemism for being a prisoner of his own lack of principles and scared of the noisy Sinhala/Buddhist minority. Well we know he was one of them.

Being a frequent traveler to India aren’t you worried about Hindutva’s push into South and beyond.
Recently my friend the oldcodger forwarded two books on Hindu/Hindian early fascism and the details are as follows:

    We Or Our Nationhood Defined
    M. S. Golwalkar (Published by Bharat Publications, Nagpur in 1939)

    Hindutva: Who is a Hindu?
    By Vinayak Damodar Savarkar

I have read neither, but must read books.
I believe both M. S. Golwalkar & Vinayak Damodar Savarkar were contemporaries of Aryan Anagarika Homeless Dharmapala.

      NV,
In the deep South, Hindutva is not gaining much traction, in my observation. In Kerala, due to strong secular leftists and the Congress, In TN due to the also secular (anti- Brahmin) DMK outfits.

Much Ado About Nothing. Yes, RW is Mr. Cool. Not necessarily a good thing for the rest of us but indeed a cool or emotionless persona. Very rarely have I seen him stray away from this. He was emotionless about July 1983′, about ‘Batalanda’ and literally everything else. In court he is lierally unshakable. This makes him a very, very dangerous character. To me personally he is nothing more than a Mr. Parasite, A political leech. But above all he has been Mr. Lucky Survivor. UNP lost soo many leaders but one thing remained constant. RW survived.

He asked good old Karu but Karu said,”Nope!” He asked Sajith but Sajith said ,”Nope!”
That was because Karu’s astrologer and Sajith’s astrologer advised them “Do not”
    .
Attributed to Central Bank Chief Dr Indrajit Coomarasway~ “………… up to November 2017, for the first time since 1953 there has been a primary surplus in the Budget and this year they are expecting a surplus in the current account of the Budget for the first time since 1987.”
In 1953, corruption was not visible but today this bane dominates. How does Indrajith allow for this?

RW. could have helped Dr Indrajith by bringing back the money the former governor gave away to his SIL.we would have had a bigger surplus.
Mr cool for you and seems to be your favorite.
If a Prime Minister gets involved in such scandles he has let down the citizen Perera.
He is in steel armour to guard his position as UNP leader by his uncles creation of the Communist style undemocratic constitution. He was not only cool but a power hungry dictator
Miles out from Colombo millions in villages depended on good governance to prosecute the villans of thuggary and thives and be back to parliamentary rule promised within 100 days.
Almost three years have passed. President remains. No pm as promised.
Are you not aware that was one reason for the people to vote with UNP.
No small cabinet and heaps more with nobody prosecuted. And jailed..
UNP has failed in the eyes of the silent villager and many other people who make a day to day living who do not have access to internet or the papers.
What is the replacement head for UNP.
No one. Tamil tactfully and as you would say Mr cool coolly groomed no one when we had a great young crowd thirty years ago in order to lie his place.
I feel sorry the party we have been supporting for generations at such a loose end with a looser at the top with thugs knocking at the door for PM to resign as party leader.
Party ApartRW has to bow down for a more charismatic leader. Even a popular import will do.

What you said about Dayan is absolute truth. a game spinner. one should look into his background .one will be taken aback .
Also about the giant gamemedda fellows. now we know what this Head TV channel was upto .there whole grameeya help talk is a blind over to the innocent village life.
But thank our creators by and large the village got the help much needed . Sir.a ..sa

    all of them have allegations.
Our country head MS is a total loser and a weak head. At least now come out and say something to get the Country going. No he is a faliure lets admit it. So you will have to bear wirh RW for the moment as if RW STEPS down now ,will be the end of MS and the coalition Govt. and the country. The former President and the JO will just go tru the country and within a year will be the same as prior to 2015. and think of the loose mouthed and arroagant sons doing the night racs and hid Motocycle gang riding the south of the country . My dear countrymen have you forgotten this era.

    “End justifies the means”
Yes Ranil knows how to remain cool except in parliament when he dances around shouting “kawuda hora” just to provoke the idiots on the other side.
He has remained mum when The Central bank was robbed under his instructions
He has remained cool when the whole country asked why he appointed a non citizen as the bank governor
Now he remains cool as ever when his governor appointed rogue has run away with his share of the loot with ranils knowledge and does not talk a word when courts have issued arrest orders on his once erstwhile Friend
Shall we propose to remand Ranil until he is able to produce him in courts cos that is what is normally done to a person signing a bail bond
Ranil got him down to appoint him as the bank governor by a telephone call
Ranil knows when it is best to talk and when to remain mum
Some culprits choose to remain silent and cool when taken into custody until the police treat them
Is that the good of being cool
He doesn’t not talk when his cabinet colleagues are accused of corrupt deals with proof
He has continued his cool to accommodate not only Mahendran but even the other fellows involved in the bond scam giving them important positions in other places like the Pm’s office and finance ministry
This is shameful behaviour my dear Shaymon
Don’t try to rationalise highly questionable acts by attributing creditable motives
May b for people who have left the Mother country for good like you such qualities are ok
But for the people living here every moment of continuation of office by such people is a move towards disaster of this country and an agony
Remember what great men like Dudley did in 1953
For them they were not sitting on cans of worms
They could honorably leave any time

      Jayantha,
Looks like you are a keen Sirasa fan. Which is bigger- this so-called bond scam where the loss is 9 billion over 30 years OR the 2014 loss at Sri Lankan airlines of 18 billion, which Sirasa doesn’t talk about?

        Sir LAC 3
Who told you the bond scam loss is 9 billion
        Sorry to say this
Even the bond commission has inferred that the loss cannot be estimated without conducting a forensic audit
According to the latest revelation by Kasim palisena who is in custody the total profit their company has made from EPF NSB and Insurance corporation alone is more than 39 billion
Only those who follow this case with detail know the size of the crime
I have nothing to do with Sirasa
But in fairness they have from time to time exposed these
        Including the airline deals

          Jayantha,
The only provable “loss” to the state is the 3% increase in interest rate. That amounts to 300 million a year, as other people have shown on CT. For 30 years that amounts to 9 billion. Get it now?
That is all that the state pays.
Even if PTL makes zillions in profit, it does not come out of our pockets, but from the secondary market buyers.
Whatever Sirasa says re. Kasun Palisena is hot air. The audited profits for PTL are 4.5 billion. Perhaps you do not know that Sirasa hounded the head of ICTA to resign, because he exposed their own dirty deals on broadcast spectrum?
Beware of liars with agendas. Use your head.

With this failure to grab power, MaRa, GoTa, Basil camp will die a natural death. Dayan’s fake theories “full of sound and fury” are obviously doomed to “signify nothing” and become tales told by an idiot.

    Wait Shyaman

This is the beginning, Next is provincial council election!
So how long your Mr cool (Chicken Shit) going to delay that.
UNP is always scared of elections, I wonder why!
And in two years, Presidential election.

Halt the dance of Rumpelstiltskin, Shyamon! It is a shameful political stalemate, nothing more. Hope the halt of ETCA was one of the main bargains.

Ranil has had the last laugh over Sirisena, UPFA headed by that joker Mahinda Ranaweera, Susil Prem and all the JO rowdies who thought they had caught a massive catch in the Indian Ocean. Wise men don’t get ruffled by noise. But Gammanpilai is still growling like a dog

We are fortunate to have a Prime Minister who does not rob. Ranil’s whole family has donated numerous parcels of land to temples. MR shouts racism and Buddhism but his family hasn’t given one inch donation to Temples. They got millions of state money to build a memorial for the father -unknown DA Rajapakse

Most Venerable Banthe Maravila Dhammaratne Thero,

Ranil intends to bring back the Mahavamsa time, when Sinhala masses were forced to work for the Buddhist temples. He intends to join with the Tamil Vellelas like Coomaraswamy, and make Hindu temples complementary to the Buddhist temples. Then the 1% Vellela Sinhalese and 0.5% Vellela Tamils will rule over the 99% masses and make them work very hard indeed. This is wrong mindset for according to the Buddha. Donations to the temple should come from the common people. Temples and priests should live simple lives and share what they have with the masses.

What nonsense. Nothing changed especially the stupidity and dishonesty of a country. There is no way the limited culture , the general lack of integrity or the poor level of intelligence of a country to change overnight

The UNP has the numbers in parliament and a leader who is a gift from hell.

They lost the local government elections country-wide and badly ( like most elections in the past 25 years)

But their leader says I will stay put(he has now said this for 25 years).Next week he will go the the big match and act the donkey.

The president cannot do anything about it.

The Rajapakses are a clan of crooked thugs. But at least acceptable to the people as shown in the voting.Like Prabakaran was accepted by the tamils

Nothing changes in this country .

It has become a joke and Shyamon the ultimate joker………He is trying to launder a guy who can never win a presidency of the country, a serial loser, and a master crook. He became the PM through the back door and hanging onto it in the face of a significant electoral defeat. No political leader in the world possesses such a notorious resume. Yet Shyamon is unable to get out of the servility and continue to spew this disgusting stuff making the readers nauseate.

You like MR? He got caught stealing Tsunami funds. He spend government funds to put up a memorial for his father whom we have never heard of. Premadasa spent his own money to boost up his father. Basil is a rogue. Wimal is a rogue. Yoshitha and Nimal charged with murder. They had a grandma who bought them luxury houses after selling a gem bag handed over by God. Compared to this horror story Ranil is an angel.

Voters seem to have concluded that the stories about MR stealing are exaggerations because yahapalanaya even after 3 years in power couldn’t prove anything. Voters seem to have concluded a competent crook as minister Rajitha mentioned is better than an utterly incompetent and failed crook giving 46% preference to MR while giving 32% preference to RW. They seem to have concluded that a strong leadership is far better than a weak & lame leadership.

This bring to My mind what THE SAINT YOGASWAMY Of Colombuthurai, Jaffna used to repeat to his devotees’ Ontrilum Ontrum Illai” directly translated would mean “THERE IS NOTHING In ANYTHING”
