Intense Maneuvering As UNP And SLFP Fight For Political Relevance

Intense discussions among multiple parties and personalities continue five days after the main parties of the ruling coalition were routed at the recently concluded local government elections.

Colombo Telegraph learns that a UNP delegation which included party leader and prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Deputy Leader Sjaith Premadasa, Chairman Malik Samarawickrema and Akila Viraj Kariyawasam had met for several hours this evening with President Maithripala Sirisena regarding formalizing a cabinet reshuffle.

Unless the two parties agree to remain in a coalition and therefore retain the notion of a ‘national government,’ cabinet will have to be reduced to 30 or less portfolios as per the 19th Amendment.

While the UNP wants to go it alone, there have been moves to oust Wickremesinghe and appoint an SLFPer in his place, most likely Nimal Siripala Silva. Silva, however would have to show a majority before Friday in accordance with directions given by the President.

Although UPFA Deputy Minister Nishantha Muthuhettigamage claimed that 15 UNP Parliamentarians had agreed to join them to form a UPFA Government, there is no indication of anything of the sort being on the cards. Arumugam Thondaman and the CWC have pledged to support President Sirisena at this point.

On the other hand, there’s also talk of several SLFP MPs joining hands with the UNP to enable that party to secure a Parliamentary majority. The UNP at present has 107 seats and requires just 6 more to obtain a majority. Wickremesinghe believes that the TNA will not support any move to oust him at this point.

These moves have been necessitated by the fact that Parliament cannot be dissolved before March 2020 following limitations scripted into the 19th Amendment. The crisis is a result of the Parliament’s current composition not reflecting the general will of the people as evidenced by the results of the local government elections.

Meanwhile there has been a sharp exchange between Minister Rajitha Senaratne and former president Mahinda Rajapaksa with regard to the position of the victorious Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna on these machinations.

Senaratne, claimed at the Cabinet press briefing that Rajapaksa had requested Wickremesinghe not to step down. Rajapaksa however rejected this claim.

“It is a deliberate lie; this is another lie of Rajitha. As a senior minister he should now stop uttering these kinds of lies and making irresponsible statements,” Rajapaksa told the media at the Narahenpita Abhayarama Temple.

15.7 million voters were eligible at the LG elections according to 2017 listings.
Out of that only 11.2 million have cast their votes.
4.5 million have boycotted LG elections to show their disgust over UNP/SLFP/JVP as well as JO/SLPP politicians.
This is the first step in a new people’s struggle SANS POLITICIANS.
4.5 million silent dissenting voices is massive. It is time our politicians stop boycotting common sense.

It’s not boycotting, 20% of Sri Lankans are not interested in politics, refer to past records.
Refer to the polling figures of other countries.
Decisions should be made on cast votes, not uncast votes.
In democratic environments those who don’t cast vote are anti-social.
However if the figure is below 50%, it must be taken seriously as it may have another story.

If Bondscam Ranil does not resign he will be impeached soon.

Ranil’s greed for power is only matched by Mahinda Jarapassa and they should share a prison cell.
RW robbed the Central Bank in order to buy his way to President and power as the majority of the people of Lanka detest him.
RW should be Impeached with his network of UNP thieves who robbed the Central Bank and people of Lanka and are selling remaining land and marine resources to his foreign handlers.

Even with JO’s help President can’t form a SLFP government. According to 19-A, they have to prove that they have the majority in the Parliament as ONE PARTY which contested at the August-2015 election. Caretaker government is rubbish.
            .
Eventhough SLFP takes MPP from other parties and show the majority in the Parliament, it doesn’t apply as (i) those MPP are not SLFPers (ii) the actual number what SLFP won at the last general election is already registered. There is no way to change the number of MPP belonging to SLFP until the next election. That means Ranil’s position as the PM is unchallenged. There is no way to appoint a PM from SLFP without UNP’s consent.
            .
I think this bogus political game to hoodwink voters should be stopped. Voters are not idiots and they will show that at the next election. JO is the biggest losers. Heroes became zeroes and the zero became a hero within 24 hours.
            .
Stop your stupid game, politicos!!!!! People are suffering. Sinhalese New Year is at the doorstep. Are you going to reduce food ;prices or not? How about rice? Are there enough rice in stock? How about farmers? Have they given the fertilizer? I heard that there is a massive drinking water shortage in 5 provinces. When are you going to address that issue? Will government-servants get their festival allowance in time? Will there be a value pack of food items from CWC for this Sinhalese New Year too? How about people’s day-to-day food items such as onions, potatoes, lentils, sprats, milk powder, coconut (OMG), dry fish etc. I heard that vegetable prices in Dambulla have come down drastically. If there is an excess what are you going to do?
            .
As JO is a part of Yahapalanaya now, they are also answerable.

Gone are the days. People know how to use their votes. There has never been a time like this where people are interested in politics this much.
Sri Lankan politics is different. 1/3 of the people who are eligible have refused to vote. They are fed up with current political parties and seem to have showed their dissent silently.
This is the official figure. 15.7 million were eligible. 65% of them have cast their votes. That means 5.49 million have NOT cast their votes. It is massive. Are all of them not interested in politics? I don’t think so.
This 5.49 million voters would surely make a change in 2020. The most important factor is nobody knows who will be their choice. It is highly likely they will support a new leader/a new party or who knows an independent person.

MR/BR/GR/JO who demanded a compromise from the President until yesterday, suddenly compromising without any conditions. The closest reason I see is Salaga losing his Law and Order portfolio and Sarath Fonseka is tipped to be his replacement. SLPP/JO has no principles at all. SLPP only revolves around Rajapaksas who are now terrified of SF. I don’t think anything will happen to MR. What about the 5 million mandate they were so jubilant of? I feel sorry for them.

SLPP is UNP’s proxy. It is funded by Ranil’s bond money. JOkers have no idea that their souls are sold to Ranil by Basil/SLPP.
If Basil gets a chance he will form a government with Ranil and MR will be forced to retire. Unlike MR, he is not answerable to anybody or give a hoot to what masses thinks. He has no principles. He only wants to get the lost power. Will he be successful. I don’t think so. I am not interested in their drama honestly. Over 65% voters are against Rajapaksa clan who have already ruled the country for 10 years. Their time is over. We will make sure that. MR of course, we all are indebted to him. That is a different matter. But nobody is under obligation to bring Basil and Gotabhaya back in power even in the name of Mahinda. It is not difficult to mobilize more people against them, if the need arises.

        Hey Champa,
easy easy, we all get what you say, We all have to agree whether we like it or not MR has considerable support, Might be corrupt this that and the other, But the bugger is a leader where as MS/RW or even SF are not leaders. People are not interested in whether MRs clan is in jail for it will be forgotten tomorrow..
So chill as to your mathematics they are merely numbers usually no one bothers about LG elections except this time, Be thankful if 1/3 of your 1/3 had voted SLPP
        then MS/RW settapochi

      Champa et al,

Sri Lanka President-backed putsch fails as PM rallies dissidents.

Gamarala relents. Gamarala has no clothes.
Mama Seka Kalemi, Mama Dena Gathimi.
      Suspected, I came to know.

A last ditch attempt by President Maithripala Sirisena to oust Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has failed due to a constitutional hurdle and more significantly the lack of parliamentary support, sources close to both sides said.

President Sirisena had agreed to continue working with Wickremesinghe, but had a sudden change of heart on Thursday after meeting with his United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) seniors.

The charismatic former president controls at least 56 members of parliament out of the 96 elected under the UPFA ticket, but even together they do not have an absolute majority of 113 seats required to constitutionally topple Wickremesinghe.

A senior official close to Sirisena said the president had been misguided by a senior lawyer who had advised him that he had the power to sack Wickremesinghe the same way he unceremoniously dismissed D. M. Jayaratne in January 2015.

      http://www.economynext.com/Sri_Lanka_President_backed_putsch_fails_as_PM_rallies_dissidents-3-9912-10.html

However, he was told that the President’s power to dismiss the Prime Minister was taken away by the 19th amendment to the constitution. Some have argued that the president could sack the entire cabinet and thus the PM too would lose his job, but there is no provision to under Articles 48 (as specified in the 19th amendment) to remove the cabinet in toto.

Time to start work on a new Coalition Government led by Sarath Fonseka the only man willing to go after the Rajapaksas Criminal Network and expedite the cases against them…

President still has time to take steps to prosecute both MR & bond scam culprits, of which there’s a belief/clues that RW has connections.

Remember president’s indirect verbal attack on RW just before the LG polls.

SF should be given that opportunity provided he is equally interested in prosecuting bond scam culprits as well.
      Unless he’s not impartial.
However, take it that SF’s being an MP is argued as anti-democratic.

      Sunil ,
From the beginning my assumption was that My3 and Ranil
were playing a game about Rajapaksas ! Rajapaksa was allowed
to regroup by the duo ! They created an opposition that match
them , not allowing JVP fit in to that space which they thought
would be detrimental to all of them . One thing is certain that
we are in the hands of a kind of mafia that people need to identify
sooner , Ranil and Mahinda refusing to go away from this business
is ample evidence for their character ! At one point , I noticed even
AKD suddenly reduced his regular tone of calling Rajapaksas
“horu.” Now Mahinda has got people’s verdict that he is not a
“hora” and he is their hero ! Nobody will touch them now including
      Sarath Fonseka .

        Sir,
Allegations are just that allegations you can go on FB, twitter on stage shout yourself hoarse by this HORU thingy… but what matters finally to prosecute is proof… so far nada, cops went globe trotting but came empty handed.
Jesus once said let he who has not sinned cast the first stone…. Hope you get the drift bro.
Because if you say 100% MR & Co. Are the only rogues of of the post independence SL …. man you can ask Sajith to refresh your memory or even Ronnie de mel if hes around

nothing will change. SLPP leaders will not allow JO to go back to SLFP and form a government of their own, in which case SLPP leaders will look like prostitutes. This is unlikely for a party which has hoodwinked members of a major party to give up their political identity and ream up with a newly formed party. Since SLPP made a sweeping victory, if JO wants to join hand with SLFP, they will have
to accept the leadership of MS and that will strengthen MS and weaken MR. That will e the worst out come for MR and co., Remember SLPP is MRs family property, no one can accuse him of being a dictator (in reality it is not MR but Basil)

    • 4

Basil accepts that HE has real estates in Bengal. He also has a son in the west and he should have considerable amount fo wealth. Malwana hiouse is said to be in Ranil’s name even though the oqner is different. SLPP, UNP and ALFP are BS. IF Maithripala Sirisena knows how to build a strong govt., all the honurable thieves will be in his govt. That is the bottom line..

    • 1
      1

Almost all the SLPP members are under various investigations varying from murders to money laundering ;thus, only way to get away from the imminent investigations is to join the government . As to Mahinda’s and his immediate family members crimes , nothing will happen to any of them . As reported earlier , either MY3 , RW or Sagala will intervene and obstruct the justice. Sagala R ‘s reputation has been severely dented owing to his own actions ;consequently , he has been pressured to step down.

Dumb native Veddo: What I heard, they have done this to many poor countries. Demand from Our country was, we helped you but you di dnot help us. So, do this now. A grouop of people including former presidents, prominent ministers are involved in that. Ranil is just dumb and blind leader. Anyway, for three years he was covering it up to his best of ability. so, he is gulity. Remember at least 175 had signed to KUDU – comsignments. there is one Thammita in volve din it. The same way about 200 have money stashed in boxes in their homes. Every president had worked for his or her family. Some one is trying threatening to leave the country not to come back saying I only was listening. sometimes saying for gods sake, I was helping my children etc., The strange thing is Ranil too is doing that. That how I heard.A very long story. some one from CPA is involved in giving the ordwers to bond scam.
See 19th amendment can be modified when they want to recuirt 100 Ministers for instead of 30. but, 19th amendment does not allow firing the Prime minister. Forget the 19th amendment how about the law enforcment which arrest a Thief or a Gang leader of a groupd of robbers. that doe snot work too. Why Maithripala sirisena is silent this long. Mahinda Rajapakse knew how to change the law suit his needs.
All I think more than rumours

People’s verdict is clear. A united front is needed from this land goes in the hands of a dictator. People wants to safeguard the nation and its people from going into the hands of a brutal dictator. People sacrificed their life to protect the democracy, freedom of speech and peace and bring unity of different communities from the brutal regime. They want unity. It is not time to talk about party and leadership. Ranil and Sirisena should sacrifice at least one percent of that people sacrifice. The nation and people will not forgive if you betray the trust of the people. Listen to the people.

Senaratne, claimed at the Cabinet press briefing that Rajapaksa had requested Wickremesinghe not to step down. Rajapaksa however rejected this claim.

There is an story Old King told to Ranil and Ranil told Rajitha and Rajitha said it in press conference.

Rajitha is not a saint; but Old Rogue is bloody liar. All his promises of past 10 years were taken back by him denying that he did not say that. In January 2012 he chased away Sampanthar. The during this election he said in Jaffna that Sampanthar did not come to negotiations.

We have all the signs that the UNP and it’s supporters are getting very desperate.Elsewhere we read of Ayellow robed thug called Dambara Amila calling for illegal measures to arrest the Rajapakses. And guess who is standing next to the yellow robed thug it is one other than Paiyyasoththi Saravanamuttu a man who pretends to be standing for civic and democratic rights. Everybody knows that he is the paramour of Chandrika sister Sunetra. We can safely assume that Amila’s. exhortation to illegal measures to deal with the Rajapakses has come from Ranil himself, too scared to say it himself. With most of the country backing Mahinda any use of force on him will result in a bloodbath. I can assure Amila that he will be disrobed and found hanging by his testicles if he tries to use force on a man revered by the people. The Rajapakses can use this exhortation to organise a pre emptive strike on Amila, Viyangoda, and Paiyyasoththi.

What “RELEVANCE” for SLFP? Both the UNP & SLFP have lost “RELEVANCE” in Governing the country. This does not in any way confer “Relevance” to SLPP – the “Pohuttu Party” that has not even put out a “Party Manifesto”. That SLPP engineered by the “Rouge” Basil R; headed by a “Prof. GL” an “Innocent Victim” and backed by MR and other “Cohorts” is a “TROJAN HORSE” – the ONLY RELEVANCE to get out of the “Alleged Crimes”.

The Civil Society circus is really getting quite uncivilised. At the top of the tree of our disgraceful civil(wrong word, she be uncivilised) society is theUSA funded Centre for a Policy Alternatives. The CPA is funded with millions of dollars to keep the US agenda for Sri Lanka going. It will be like Iraq,Libya,Afghanistan, Syria etc.USAwants Sri Lanka To toe its line internationally but decides who should be Sri Lanka’s friends or enemies. To do their dirty work they have their front “Civil society organisation” called CPA which is controlled by two people Paiyyasoththi Saravanamuttu and Huththotuwa known as the “Paiyya and Huththa” of Sri Lankan Politics. These people are desperately trying to keep the Yahaplanaya afloat and have given millions of ruppeees to a yellow robed, womaniser, called Dambara Amila who are all conspiring to pervert the will of the people. When the SLPP comes to power special legislation should be introduced to deal with these scumbags.

I cannot agree to with some of the things these fellows have done. But under the circumstances, instead of driving everybody crazy and placing the system in a limbo, maintain the status-quo and quietly work out necessary changes within a unity Government. This is not a time for the partners (some may say partners-in-crime) to fight among themselves but to do some reviewing as a team.

President is right when he said UNP that was responsible for the economy ruined it. All the indicators show economy is not doing well after the present Government came to power. Blaming the former regime is not what people expected. With the instability prevailing at present no investor will dare to take the risk. Best thing to bring stability and investor confidence is Army to take over the country and hand over the country to a limited period to a set of non-politicians who are capable of getting the economy out of the present crisis. Set up a group to monitor the progress.

    HOIST WITH OWN PETARD
    ———————————-

What the SLFPERS, UPFA and some UNP members are trying to do is not only dig their own graves ,but Trying to dig one big enough to drag the unsuspecting poor President too with them into it.

The President must think carefully and move and protect his position ,he must understand he is standing on very fragile ground ,any action taken by any group can be disastrous .

He must let the government continue as it is and request the members to bear with each other and support him to replace the constitution fully with a executive peoples body powerful enough to overseas the government’s decisions and then select Ministers from all the alliances and appoint a PM and deputy PM from both major parties ,he can even consider becoming either the PM or deputy PM after abolishing the executive Presidency .

The best change would be for him to become the PM ,appoint Mangala as deputy PM, Appoint Ranil as foreign minister, Eran as Finance minister and Navin as min for Tourism.
And then at the election we would have the best hybrid government really for the country and people.

I know I am dreaming ,sometimes dreaming is very good self therapy ..
    Bang ,bang .

If everyone of us speak to the person you meet next and ask the question whether he murdered a journalist you can catch them within 24 hours from their facial expressions as they are mingling with us.As the noose is closing in on them they and their kith and kin must be spending sleepless nights.

99% Chingkallams are very racist and chauvanistic and all these southern parties , especially Mahinda’s panders to this racist chauvanistic instincts and they vote for him. One UNP Chingkalla minister blamed the nation anthem being sung in Tamil for the reason government not faring well . Shows how evil petty minded and racist the Chingkallam mindset is. This country will never improve. As Chingkallams with their racist mindset will never allow it to improve and will vote for idiots and rogues it they promise them , that they will discriminate the Tamils. Now chill every one watch this song and learn to wink like this beautiful girl

Moderator allow this . If this person can post in Chingkallam I have every right to post in Thamizh. Do not discriminate, otherwise you are acknowledging Chingkalla racism , that Chingkallam only belongs to Sri Lanka and not Thamiz. If this person wants to post in Chingkallam, she can go to a Chingkallam language forum and post. No one is stopping her.

They came for negotiations with the President and they left men of both sides of the isle. What they did not realize is that the entire country was watching the drama the exhibition if high value limos each may be worth over 35 million rupees entering the palace. They should be able to afford coconuts at even Rs.1000.00. Among them were yesteryear saviors of ‘Sadhukin Pelenawun” and ones who wanted to over throw the capitalist govt. by the use of force and install a ‘Proletariat’ lead govt. As for me every one of them were interested about what is their lot of the loot.
