“Israel Has A Right To Defend Itself”

By Lasantha Pethiyagoda –

Prof (Emeritus) Lasantha Pethiyagoda

If you depend on mainstream western media to learn about world events, the above will have been drilled into your mind over the past year or so.

The attempted breakout from the concentration camp (a reference to Gaza by several internationally recognized personalities over a long time) on 7th Oct 2023 has been widely promoted as an unprovoked act of “genocide” by the resistance groups who had been refugees for generations.

I would like to acknowledge material from the many interviews and presentations by world renown academics such as John Mearsheimer, Jeffrey Sachs, Norman Finkelstein, M. Marandi, Ilan Pappe’, Vijay Prasad (with Noam Chomsky), military analysts such as Scott Ritter, Douglas Macgregor and others which have greatly influenced my views.

There are several things that should be obvious. The huge walls criss-crossing the territories in the West Bank and the great wall separating Gaza from present-day Israel, different rules for Palestinians and Jews by Israeli authorities, the consistent denial of human rights, civilians who have now become prisoners in these apartheid sections having been put on starvation diets for decades as official government policy and subjected to hours-long delays to travel just a kilometre or two to see relatives or do shopping, with constant humiliation, electronic surveillance, deliberate denial of access to hospitals in emergencies and many more travesties have been “normal” for decades upon decades.

The above are crimes against humanity, conducted blatantly with cover from mainly just one power at the UN, the United States which vetoed every resolution against Israel for many years. The slow ethnic cleansing was endemic. Regular carpet bombing of neighbourhoods in retaliation for kids throwing stones occurred every few years. It was referred to as “mowing the grass” which means cutting down any resistance, to acceptable levels every so often.

In the meantime, Israel continued to bomb targets in neighbouring countries. These countries are considered largely Israeli property as promised to them from Abraham’s time. Targets included airports, embassies, technology sites, energy installations etc although officially they were not at war with these “entities”. Some neighbouring country leaders took the easier option of accepting US bribes and signed agreements with Israel, although they too were occasionally bombed despite the submissive status. As these countries were undemocratic and ruled by puppets, the region naturally developed fanaticism and extremism due to pent-up frustration.

The US meanwhile, bombed back to the Stone Age, any country in the region which dared to either divest from the US dollar or even remotely resisted the expansionist agenda of Greater Israel. US contractors and large corporations would then undertake reconstruction projects, thus earning great profits from the wars their government facilitated.

Wars were great sources of income for the purveyors of mass murder of lesser people as they manufactured much of the armaments required for weapons of mass destruction. They are collectively referred to as the Military-Industrial-Complex. On the other hand, the USD is the world’s reserve currency. So, it just prints money to pay its bills and gives Israel any amount it asks, usually in the billions of dollars each time.

The mainstream media is part of the above cabal of manipulators who seemed to believe that the planet was theirs to control as they pleased. So, it faithfully omits facts and truth from its vast media empires straddling the planet, much like the hundreds of US military bases that threaten and subjugate the countries they are based in.

Israel, meanwhile “defends itself” by constantly expanding its territory either via regional wars or by expelling indigenous people who lived in these areas for thousands of years. On 7th Oct 2023, the Palestinian resistance, at great sacrifice to their people, knowing the brutal barbarity of the oppressor’s response, dared to launch an “offensive” hitherto the privilege of their ethno-supremacist masters.

Subsequent discourse howled with indignation, that a subhuman species of human animal had dared to challenge the status quo. The mainstream media was flooded with cries of foul, cries claiming abysmal lies like mass rape and baked babies or beheaded babies that were designed to perpetuate the role of victim that these chosen people had always played since the Nazi holocaust.

Israel is also defending itself when its response to rocket attacks from the north were at a ratio of 4:1. In the first days prior to its latest invasion, it used more than the total tonnage of munitions used on Dresden during the blitzkrieg.

Israel uses collective punishment on any resistance as evident throughout the massacres in Gaza and the West Bank. Lebanon is home to Christians, Druze and Hizballah, of the Shia community is just one of them. However, 2000-pound bombs in residential areas do not discriminate. Exploding pagers and Walkie Talkies and hacked barcodes are all war crimes.

Israel probably plans to annex much of Lebanon, more parts of Syria and Jordan as well as any part of biblical Egypt. Hamas provided the causus belli for the grand project of depopulating Gaza, then making life intolerable in the West Bank and southern Lebanon, so that Palestinians and Arabs are ethnically cleansed to make way for a pure Jewish state to emerge. It looks like Iran may not co-operate, though.

SJ, while Hamas attacked on October 7th 2023, killing Israelites and taking hostages on their holy day of Yom Kippur, and starting the Hamas led current war, it is amazing how your mind sees Israel led by Netanyahu. PM defends it’s citizens from Hamas terrorism funded by Iran. The Iranian president Raisi died in a helicopter crash which simply came down on 20th May 2024, called Pesach Sheni, the 2nd Passover, for those not ready at the first PO, one month after the Nisan Passover, for the crucifixion of Jesus. Yahya Sinwar died shot in the head on October 16th 2024, 10 days after the Jewish new year of October 6th, the creation of Adam and Eve. October 16th is Yom Kippur 10 days later where sins not forgiven brings judgement. The return of Jesus is around these dates.

rtf, Gaza originally belonged to Judah. Joshua 15,45-47 When PM Ariel Sharon left Gaza to terrorists, he went into a coma for several years and then died. When Rabin negotiated peace with Arafat for West Bank, Rabin was shot to death. There is judgement when Gaza is given to terrorists.

Statistics from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), says that between 2008 and 2023, 6,407 Palestinian civilians were killed by Israeli troops and settlers. Israeli deaths in the same period, because of Palestinian violence, numbered 308.
Palestinian injured during those years numbered 152,560. Israelis injured numbered 6,307.
That disproportion and its continuation undoubtedly led to the Hamas assault.

Sonali, when Jesus returns in his own power to finish transgression, he will have to destroy all nations and people who disobey and rebel. Zech. 12,3 says that “Jerusalem will be a heavy stone, a cup of drunkenness to all nations gathered against it” Vs.5 continues, “The inhabitants of Jerusalem are my strength, in the Lord of hosts, their God”. Rev.19,11 says that when Jesus returns in Righteousness, he will judge and make war. He will rule in Kingdom authority with the sheep nations and destroy goat nations. Mat.25,32

The Jews celebrate Rosh Hashana trumpets as the new year which means creation took place which means that God created Adam and Eve. I do not know more than that except that the Queen of UK celebrated her birthday in June, even though real date was earlier.

              DTG,
Are you Jewish or Christian? If you are Jewish, you cannot talk about Jesus Christ. If you are Christian, you cannot talk about Rosh Hashana.
The King’s birthday has more to do with weather than the Bible. It is anew tradition anyway.
The British monarch’s “official birthday” celebration is held in June largely due to practical reasons related to the weather. This tradition began with King Edward VII, who reigned from 1901 to 1910.
Are you saying that Creation took place in 1901?

No there isn’t, and but all these hypocrites come here and howl cry and post numerous comments and articles with regards to the plight of the poor Palestinian Arab but are very silent at the best but mostly celebrate, support and condone, the Sinhalese Sri Lankan state structural genocide and war crimes and the continuing marginalization of the island’s Tamils, justifying it with Mahavamsa fairy tales, and all sorts of outlandish stories. One joker is commenting about 6407 Palestinian deaths but the Sri Lankan state in May 2009 deliberately killed 145000 innocent Tamil civilians, the UN belatedly was forced to admit ar0und 70000 were killed, more than a million Tamils were forced to flee, this is all fine to these Sinhalese, Fake Arab South Indian immigrant so called Sri Lankan Moors and to some spiteful opportunistic Self-hating Tamils.

They only see the humanity in the Palestinian Arabs but in their own Tamil population. Hypocritical racists. The Muslims are the worst. Tamil by ethnicity but in the name of their religion and itsy-bitsy Arab that only a few of them have, largely connive with the Sinhalese in their genocidal dance against their fellow Tamils but howl and cry about the Palestinians in the name of Islam and their common Arab heritage(sic) that is only in their pathetic brainwashed minds.

We all know the opinions of a well know Islamic fanatic and hardliner. How always leaps to defend Islamic extremism on the island and the fake Arab myth, that many DNA studies, including the latest has firmly disproved. To you the truth told by Tamils is Eelam propaganda. Just like the way you keep on defending the atrocities of the Islamic Home guards who were, ironically trained by Israeli intelligence (one of them) to commit large scale atrocities, murder, rape looting and ethnic cleansing on many Tamil Hindu villages in the east. Despite many people on this forum providing proof of the atrocities, you keep on denying it and still keep on demanding proof. Showing what a biased Islamic hardliner you are and pathetic Arab wannabe.

Muhandiram, your comment only confirmed what Rohan25 stated. Sri Lankan Muslims are the biggest hypocrites. Eelam and just Tamil rights are rubbish, but immense support for Palestinian rights and statehood, in the name of Islam and an imagined blanket Arab origin. Eelam or Eezham is the oldest historical name for the island and a Tamil state had existed on the island until a few centuries ago. However, there is no history of a Palestinian Arab state, anywhere in history so far. You mean to state history is rubbish? That does not mean a Palestinian Arab state should not exist. At least we Tamils unlike you South Indian Dravidian origin, Sri Lankan Moors are not hypocritical, shameful and do not have double standards. All in the name of Islam and an imagined Arab ancestry.

RBH59……they might not be as bad as the US as they are for greater Socialism……Socialism doesn’t usually require expansionism unless threatened by a Capitalistic power. Socialism is about making the best use of what is available; Capitalism is about creating futuristic value on what is not available and forcing it to reach even that impossible mark. (although the minds of the Russians might be exactly the same as their US counterparts in terms of power hunger and control…..Chinese historically being more genial). Whatever it is, I am sure that US will do well enough for itself if they can stop Israel’s expansion and start building up a Palestinian state……their failure hitherto has been due to a perverse enjoyment of seeing silly places like Saudi scramble to their dictates….peace is no fun for some of them, you see.

Yes, every country has the right to defend itself. However, the attack on Israel was a result of: 1) Illegal treatment of Palestinians by Israel, 2) Its weakness in defending itself and intelligence failure, 3) Netanyahu, a crook trying to hold on to power.

Defending does not mean attacking and killing innocent women, men and children who were sleeping in the middle of the night and destroying a whole area.

USA and Israel must be stopped USA is equally responsible for the genocide.

Israel assumed Hamas could be confined to Gaza. Similar to how Sri Lanka tried to confine the civil war to the North and East. 7th Oct changed the calculus. Besides Qatari money, Hamas receives major support from Iran, which has a defense partnership with Russia. With Iranian weapons, the scope of Hamas operations extends well beyond Gaza. That was the lesson from 7th Oct. Most readers must be unaware that Hamas jumped the gun. The attack, as originally planned, involved not only Hamas attacking Jewish settlements, but Hezbollah invading Northern Israel (simultaneously) with the Houthis and Iran also firing missiles at Israel.

            2

            Hello Scot,

I am familiar with the rumor that Iran has nuclear weapons. It could be one reason why the US or Israel has hesitated to attack Iran directly. On the other hand, Mossad is well-entrenched within the higher echelons of the IGRC. As an example, a high-ranking IGRC general is thought to have tipped off Israel in relation to the whereabouts of Nasrallah. This general is supposed to have attended that very meeting but declined for obvious reasons. So if Iran did in fact possess nuclear weapons or warheads, Israel would likely know and act on that information.
Iran is playing a dangerous proxy game in Israel. One proxy (Hamas) has been eliminated and the other (Hezbollah) has seen most of its top leadership wiped out. As I said earlier, unless Russia uses military assets to protect Iranian interests, then there is nothing preventing Israel from escalating against Iranian targets. But I don’t see Russia doing that. They didn’t do anything when NATO bombed Serbia (Slavic), so why would they aid Muslims? That’s simply the mentality of Slavs. Even in Ukraine, Russia has used far less force than in Aleppo or Chechnya.

Also, who is Joshua and will Israel hold on to Gaza till Joshua comes and hand over Gaza to him if and when he comes?

Then why is Israel holding on to the West Bank? And why does Israel often refer to territories from the Nile to the Euphrates as if these territories belong to it?

          1

Muhandiram, New King James version, Joshua 15,45 says Ekron and vs.46 says Ashdod. Vs.47 says Gaza with its towns and villages, from Brook of Egypt and Great sea (Medit.) with its coastline. Vs.20 said earlier that this is the inheritance of Judah. The 5 cities the Philistines invaded from the sea were called Ekron, Ashkelon, Gath, Ashdod and Gaza at that time when Moses took the Jews out of Egypt on way back to Israel, but his trainee Joshua led them into Israel after the death of Moses. Later David killed the giant Goliath of Gath invading Israel. God allowed Israel in captivity to Babylon and to Persia when they sinned. After Jesus, in AD 70 Romans destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem. Israel finally back in 1948, God promising no longer being pulled out from land. Amos 9,15

            Hello DTG,
Amos is old Testament written long before AD 70. The book is named after Amos, a prophet from the village of Tekoa in Judah who was active around 750 BC. God obviously got it wrong 2,770 years or so ago. Amos starts with the destruction of Israel, but not all of its people. So when did that happen?
Stop guessing about which years the Old Testament predictions refer to.

Muhandiram, West Bank is an area which is part of Israel which Yasser Arafat and his Fatah held onto like Hamas held onto Gaza. Arafat tried Oslo peace deal with Rabin promoted by Clinton and Rabin was shot dead by a Jew. West Bank has no accepted boundaries forced on to Israel. Golan Heights was used to shoot down onto Israel which was forced to defend itself. Very complicated land grabbing.

Lester, From where did you get the idea that Hamas ” jumped the gun” when the original plan was a simultaneous attack by Hamas on Jewish settlements and by Hezbollah on Northern Israel?

      • 2
        4

        Muhandiram,

If the Arabs had nuclear weapons, they would mount a suicide attack against Israel. They are too dumb to make one themselves, just like they need foreigners to drill the oil and do the construction. Saudi Arabia thinks they can just buy one from Pakistan, but Pakistan (despite being a hub for militants) will not sell one so easily. Pakistan should not have nuclear weapons, but they do, and they can’t be taken away. Now, Iran (Persian) is a different story. They have the capability to build a nuclear weapon with a little assistance from Russia. Whether Iran chooses to go for the “breakout” is a tough question. So far they have been playing proxy with some Arab groups, but Israel has quickly ended that game, albeit at some cost. A protracted war with Iran would disrupt global oil markets and maybe cause a global recession.

The borders of Palestine are defined in the map which is presented with the UN resolution. Did you not read it?

Israel has a right to defend itself” affirms a state’s right to protect its citizens. However, international law requires that defense actions avoid excessive force and civilian harm, balancing self-defense with humanitarian limits. This becomes controversial when responses lead to significant civilian casualties. And flattening a country is inside right to defend other countries will follow.

RBH59, when a country defends itself against terrorists, it is called war which finally has no control over civilian deaths, when the civilians are promoting the terrorists.

LankaScot, Christians are waiting for the return of Jesus to Jerusalem and hence are concerned about the land of Israel being attacked by terrorists who do not know that Israel can never be eliminated the way they wish.

            DTG,
You are Jewish, not Christian. It is Jews who believe in “an eye for an eye”. Christians (in theory anyway) turn the other cheek.

old codger, All the Jews in Israel will accept Messiah when he comes again. They prefer to be called Messianic Jews rather than Christians. Main thing is to allow the fullness of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer in Jesus Christ, sent here by Father Jehovah.

                DTG,
Give me a link to prove that Israeli Jews are waiting for Jesus as Messiah. It is your imagination. They are waiting for the Messiah, period. NOT Jesus That’s why they killed Jesus in the first place.

old codger, your interpretation is not biblical. Zech. 12,10 says that the Lord will pour out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, The Spirit of grace and supplication (Holy Spirit) Then they will look on Me whom they pierced (crucified) They will mourn as for his only son and grieve as for first born. Great mourning in plain of Megiddo also. Continue reading 13,2 where he will cut off names of idols from the land. No Allah. If you read the beginning in 12,3. all nations against Jerusalem will be cut in pieces. Also Zech.14,3 says he will fight against those nations and his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives. When he ascended from there 2000 years ago, he said he will come back there. Rev. 19,11, he judges and makes war. Lot more.

Arab Christians call God Allah too. You mean Christians will not be allowed to worship?🤣🤣

            Hello DTG,

You used the phrase “has no control over civilian deaths, when the civilians are promoting the terrorists”. You are blaming (condoning even) the Civilians for their own deaths. Is this the New Christianity or Old Testament Revenge?

      Hello RBH59,
Every single Mainstream Media Organisation (like CNN, Sky News, Fox, BBC and many others) has complelled its Journalists and Presenters to Use this Phrase “Israel has a right to defend itself” to justify the atrocities being committed by Israel against Palestinian Civilians.
They also use the Phrase “Do you condemn Hamas?” continually against those opposed to the Genocide in Palestine. I have even heard people like Piers Morgan repeat the question even after someone has said yes.
The Pager attacks were planned a long time before Israel began bombing Lebanon (again).
There is a Conspiracy, no a Directive, amongst many western Countries to defend Israel and supply it with Arms unconditionally. This means that they will do nothing to stop Israel’s continued attacks against the Palestinians, Lebanese, Houthis and Iranians. In fact in most cases they are complicit. They will do nothing to stop Israel’s attacks on UN Organisations and their people, even if it leads to the break-up of the UN. The Israeli Law against UNWRA will be a test case of the US Leahy Law. The Old “Rules Based Order” is on its Deathbed and the USA is performing the Last Rites.
      Best regards

“Israel Has A Right To Defend Itself” – the answer is yes. It is Hamas which invaded Israel on October 07, 2023. They did not attack Israel’s military installations but killed innocent Israelis numbering over 1,200. Hamas also took 250 Israeli citizens as hostages. Most of them have been since killed by Hamas militants. These are war crimes committed by Hamas, an outfit designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including Arab countries.

Hamas and Hezbollah are refusing to recognise the existence of the State of Israel. That is the crux of the problem. Israel was formally established by the Israeli Declaration of Independence on 14 May 1948 and was admitted to the United Nations (UN) as a full member state on 11 May 1949.

Israel is a tiny state with a small population of 9.2 million Jews and 2.1 million Arabs—yes, 2.1 million Arabs! Its area is just 20,770 sq km (8020 sq miles). In comparison, there are 22 Arab countries with a total population of 494.000 000 million! The Arab population increased by 8.6 percent in 2023.

The solution to the problem is to create a state for Palestinians on the territory of the former Mandatory Palestine. A two-state solution.

Roshan claims that in May 2009 the Sri Lankan army deliberately killed 145000 innocent Tamil civilians. This is a fabrication.

Thanga, your 2 state solution is not God’s solution. Yasser Arafat’s same solution did not work. Can anyone live next door to their enemy. Undivided Jerusalem is where Jesus is coming back to rule in kingdom power. President Trump understood and acted accordingly.

      Hello Thanga,
You said, “Hamas also took 250 Israeli citizens as hostages. Most of them have been since killed by Hamas militants”.

      Hamas took around 250 Hostages.
“As of Oct. 3, 112 hostages have come out of Gaza alive, having been swapped for prisoners being held in Israel, Israeli officials said”.

“About 97 hostages remain in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 33 people no longer believed to be alive, according to Israeli officials”
So out of the 250 taken Hostage, 112 are alive and released, 97 are still hostage, the Israelis killed 3 of their own hostages waving white flags and around 50 were killed by Israeli Air strikes. The Israelis have recovered 40 Bodies which includes the 3 they shot.
All Hostages should be released immediately, including the bodies of the dead.
The figures I have quoted above are taken from reliable sources including ABC https://abcnews.go.com/International/israel-hamas-war-death-toll-1-year/story?id=114458943
Now where do you get your figures that most of the hostages have been killed by Hamas Militants?
And lastly – How many Civilians do you think were deliberately killed in May 2009?
      Best regards

Arugam Bay attack hopefully thwarted now. Something similar to the Easter Attacks was likely planned. If Israeli tourists were targeted, Mossad will personally take care of matters. As I have said for a long time: there will be a major conflict between the majority community and radical Islamists unless the government takes pro-active measures to implement birth control and prevent the spread of radical ideology.

        Hello Scot,

If everyone is equal, why is IQ normally distributed? Your comrade Sinwar was in Israeli prisons for 22 years. He learned Hebrew, completed a degree, even had brain surgery courtesy of the evil Zionists. Yet the terror element could not be erased.
