UNP National List MP Kodagoda Hitige Jayampathi Rohanakumara Wickramarathna alias Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne PC who was a vociferous campaigner against the corruption of the Mahinda Rajapaksa led former regime has been accused of selling his duty free car permit.
Jayanpathy is also a politbureau member of Lanka Samasamaja Party (majority group) and the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.
On February 13, 2017, Rs 95,27,562.50 ( USD 62,500.00 X 152.4410) worth a brand new Toyota Land Cruiser was imported using Wickramaratne’s duty free car permit by Bestair Services (PVT) ltd. The vehicle was registered with the Commissioner of Motor Traffic on June 14, 2017 and transferred to the name of the vehicle permit buyer Yaden International (PVT) ltd. on August 22, 2017.
According to the custom’s declaration form the total tax waived off for Jayanapthy’s vehicle is Rs 31,774,450.00.

If they did not have a permit they would have paid the duty to the state. This is a criminal act as good has stealing money from the state coffers and the public. I don’t think there is a single politician who would say no to a net profit of at least Rs 25m from selling the permit. Money, I can only dream of saving in my entire life time.
Even if the vehicle is kept for the full term, a tidy profit is still possible because no import duty was paid. Yet, I can’t bring my old car, which I have bought without resorting to any funds from SL (in fact, I have contributed to the FOREX reserves of SL) , for my personal use in SL without paying the duty of an equivalent brand new car, thanks to the wisdom of RK, the self proclaimed best Finance Minister ever in SL. Accordingly, this is probably the only country where assets with a useful service life are valued without depreciation for tax purposes. This is the unique country of yahapalanaya.
In UK, only the PM & senior ministers are given official vehicles but the vehicles belong to the state & not to the individual. A few years ago, during the run up to the Brexit referendum, a racist yob knifed a popular young MP, Jo Cox, for her outspoken support for refugees when she was driven to her constancy office by her secretary ( as she didn’t have a car) but despite the outrage, no politician demanded official vehicles or body guards for their protection. I have said this repeatedly. I say it again. Remove immediately this “DUTY FREE” allowance. No person, entity or ministry, minister, should be allowed a Duty Free item. What is dutiable to the ordinary citizen, is dutiable to ALL. As far as I am aware, only the Queen of England pays no taxes. In Canada, The U.S., etc ALL pay taxes and duty.

we should stand against DUTY FREE as well as their unethical pension system,what normal government servants should serve 30 years or more to get 75% for pension (correct me if i am wrong) but they are eligible just after 5 years in parliament.most of them are not present most of the time,we get together and make voice against it

Lal, fully agree. They should just be paid an all-inclusive allowance. They should also be allowed pensions ONLY after at least three terms and only at the rates of State employees. Both these parties have well and truly let the nation down. Also, ALL earning salaries must pay taxes.

These guys who are sent to Parliament by voters and those who enter the Parliament through the back door get a duty free car permit worth US$60,000. Ordinary citizens who work in foreign countries for several years get only a duty free allowance of US$ 1,000.00 when they bring their used household belongings. If you bring even a used 55” TV, that is considered as a luxury item and taxed heavily.

Under the prevailing law, no one is entitled to any tax free privilege unless there are compelling reasons to grant such exemptions.
The law provides for granting of such tax exemptions only in the PUBLIC INTEREST and always under strict conditions to prevent abuse of government tax revenue. Every person granted such a privilege is required to pay all levies exempted at the time of importation in the event intends to sell any such item.
This is the reason as to why over 115 MPs and Cabinet Ministers who abused these tax free permits to rob govt revenue are charged for Corruption.
As the spineless Commissioners of the CIABOC, failed to enforce law against these criminal elements, now there is a action initiated against them as well.
Yet, people should not forget that Sri Lanka is a FAILED STATE, where one class in the society, the corrupt politicians, are allowed to go scot free. And this is the fundamental and compelling reason for me to consider contesting for the office of the Executive President in 2020, to bring all cheats to justice.
