Ajith Rajapaksa
In the early 1980s, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) sought to occupy the political space once dominated by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). As part of this effort, they launched a major nationwide propaganda campaign titled “End of a Journey.” However, the campaign itself was a failure. Since then, the JVP has employed various strategies to gain political power. Today, however, the party is undergoing a historic transformation: one so profound it appears irreversible. This transformation involves shedding its long-held nationalist and socialist ideologies in favor of a form of liberalism.
Historically, the JVP staunchly opposed Indian expansionism, Western imperialism, the open-market economy, privatization, and the involvement of global institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Yet, in a stunning shift, the party has recently abandoned all of these positions, and in an astonishingly short span of time.
Prior to the most recent election, the JVP fiercely opposed President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s IMF-backed debt restructuring program and criticized agreements signed with India for development projects. Today, in power, the same party continues implementing these very policies, ones it opposed just months ago, with neither hesitation nor explanation.
On one hand, this dramatic reversal may not come as a surprise. The JVP has a long history of ideological flip-flopping: shifting from Guevarism to Sinhala nationalism, from anti-Indian rhetoric to calls for Tamil self-determination, and from revolutionary socialism to rejection of even the provincial council system. It is a party often torn between radical and contradictory ideological currents.
In the 1988–89 period, the JVP pivoted to ultra-nationalism and adopted violent tactics, including assassinations and acts of terror, endangering its own cadre. It was a self-destructive phase. Instead of building mass support, they sought to capture state power through force. Worker strikes were not mobilized organically, but enforced through intimidation and death threats. JVP leaders seemed to believe the state could be overthrown through terrorism, not people’s power. Even in 1971, their first insurrection was an attempt to seize power through guerrilla warfare, inspired by Che Guevara and Fidel Castro. The JVP of that era was not a true labor movement, it was a collection of disillusioned students, youth, farmers, and marginalized communities. Many political analysts viewed it as a petty-bourgeois movement projecting the frustrations of a disempowered class.
Their attempt to topple a democratically elected government within a year of its formation: one backed by a popular coalition, was politically immature and reactionary. As Lenin once described such behavior, it was an “infantile disorder” of leftism. Even Che Guevara warned that guerrilla warfare should only be a last resort, undertaken after all democratic options had been exhausted. The JVP’s attempts to romanticize its uprisings as heroic revolutions are deeply problematic. Both insurrections were ultimately self-defeating, driven by flawed ideology, poor understanding of Marxist principles, and a petty-bourgeois adventurism that alienated the working class.
On Socialism
The transition from capitalism to socialism is a complex societal transformation that requires deep-rooted mass participation. It cannot be imposed by a revolutionary elite, nor achieved through dramatic acts of heroism. Crucially, it cannot succeed in isolation from the global socialist movement. The JVP lacked clarity and vision in this regard.
Prominent leftist intellectuals, such as Dr. Vickramabahu Karunaratne, argued that true socialist change in a country like Sri Lanka could only emerge as part of a broader regional transformation. They promoted internationalism and solidarity, especially with South India, and recognized the legitimate rights of the Tamil people in the North and East. In contrast, the JVP clung to anti-Indian nationalism. When United Socialist Alliance leader Vijaya Kumaratunga forged ties with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran in the late 1980s, the JVP and its allies found it intolerable. This led to the planning of assassinations of leftist leaders, contributing to a cycle of violence. Their fascist tendencies provoked a brutal state response. Simultaneously, militant groups in the North adopted equally destructive tactics. In the end, both the Southern insurrection and the Northern armed struggle led to devastating human tragedies—two sides of the same coin.
The Recent Past
In 2005, the JVP was instrumental in bringing Mahinda Rajapaksa to power, claiming they were saving the nation from the United National Party (UNP), which they accused of betraying the country. The party viewed the LTTE as the main obstacle to socialism and actively supported its defeat, aligning with Rajapaksa and other right-wing nationalist forces. This alliance, however, empowered those very forces and marginalized the JVP. Internal dissent soon followed. Key leaders, including the party’s propaganda secretary and parliamentary group leader, left. Others soon followed, forming a new political party. The JVP’s vote base plummeted to below 3%.
The formation of the National People’s Power (NPP) coalition was a response to this crisis. But the NPP’s initial performance failed to improve electoral fortunes, and internal disagreements persisted.
The People’s Struggle
The 2022 economic crisis, fueled by Rajapaksa-era mismanagement and compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic, led to a historic people’s uprising. At first, some JVP leaders dismissed the protesters at Galle Face Green as privileged urban youth enjoying the sea breeze. But as the movement gained momentum, the JVP joined the struggle. However, their participation was inconsistent. They often appeared more interested in electoral gain than in grassroots activism.
When the movement called for a sustained general strike to demand justice for attacks on protesters, JVP-aligned union leaders initially pledged support. But the very next day, they pulled out, undermining the movement’s momentum.
After Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled and Ranil Wickremesinghe assumed the presidency, the JVP initially welcomed IMF engagement, claiming the institution would not support corrupt politicians like Wickremesinghe. But once the IMF agreement was finalized, they reverted to their previous criticisms. They also attacked development deals with India, accused India of involvement in the Easter Sunday attacks, and condemned the leasing of Trincomalee oil tanks. They pledged to revise IMF agreements if elected. But in power, they backtracked, saying revision was no longer feasible.
They once promised to repeal repressive laws like the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) with the stroke of a pen. Today, there is no indication of such reforms. Police repression, arbitrary arrests, and attacks on protesters continue. They criticized Wickremesinghe for taxing the poor instead of the rich, but those policies remain unchanged. Far from resisting the IMF, the JVP has now fully embraced its program. Graduates are told the government cannot create jobs for them. Farmers are blamed for inflation. Indian-backed agreements signed under Ranil are being implemented enthusiastically. Defense ties with India have deepened. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently visited Sri Lanka to formalize these deals.
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake now acts like a “red elephant calf”, a symbolic nod to his transformation into a compliant figurehead for elite and capitalist interests. For the IMF and business elites, this is a welcome development. Even Ranil’s old advisors now serve AKD. The JVP has aligned itself with Indian and American interests. American diplomats routinely visit Pelawatta to reinforce these ties.
This shift has not stirred much dissent within the party. JVP members remain obedient to leadership, a long-standing tradition within the party.
The Final Curtain
The political transformation of the past few years in Sri Lanka is nothing short of extraordinary. Mahinda Rajapaksa, once revered as a patriotic leader and war hero, is now seen as a corrupt criminal. Gotabaya Rajapaksa, once hailed as a decisive leader, has been exposed as inept. The JVP, once a firebrand movement of Marxists and patriots, has become a liberal force aligned with global capitalism. The party that once demonized Indian influence now implements Indian-backed agreements without protest.
In this new political landscape, there is no room left for “patriots” or “revolutionaries.” The Rajapaksas ended patriotism. AKD and his coalition have ended socialism and anti-Indian rhetoric. The illusions have shattered. The masks have fallen. And in a sense, that is a healthy development. The people now see things as they are.

All your narratives, theories and analyses about the history of our country, JVP, NPP or AKD and his colleagues may be correct. Probably perfect. I am not here to dissect them one by one and have fun! I am not here to tell that ‘They said that…. but did this…they did that…but said this’. All I am interested in is, that there is a new government which is quite different to all governments we had since 1970. A set of politicians quite different to the world class rogues we had in the last few decades, who dumped the country in a cesspit!! That there is a government run by people who do not rob. Who are against corruption. Who do not waste tax payer money. Who show that they are genuinely committed to develop this country with whoever – angels or devils – with India, USA or China or whoever. For the betterment of masses, for its people and for the future generations. That is all I am interested about. THE REST IS IMMATERIAL!

Yet, one would expect NPP to pay greatest attention to the corruption of the past (aka Theft, justified by the former UNP and SLPP/SLFP Ministers as “Investments”), and bring back to the Motherland the monies that the suffering Lankan-Masses worked for, that the 5% Lankan Elite have stashed in overseas accounts. Can’t believe that USAID, IMF,, World-Bank, ADB, and China have been doling out money to us with no accountability whatsoever (guess they either trusted these politicians, or they themselves, full of corruption and/or full of futuristic globalist networking (like the 100 year plan), turned a blind eye to these atrocities). No wonder Trump is in a rage!

I wish it had done all this before the elections. But promising to follow IMF rules doesn’t win elections, does it? I am sorry for all the voters who expected an egalitarian paradise, but got a faux-UNP regime. Not Rathu Sahodarayas but Pink Elephants, complete with sharp suits and ties.

Whatever the JVP’s claims of inclusiveness, its actual attitudes are the same as any Sinhala Buddhist party. No matter where they are, I believe our people should fulfill their obligations. The majority of Sri Lankans are born fools. that regardless of where they are, they should all stand for. RTF and the other one in London (DS) are the most well-known examples.
I recall RTF declaring, “I adore Trump.” I’m not sure if anyone on this planet can give praise to a politician as awful as Trump or any other beast, aside from blind Republicans. I go to a regular pub every day after work, and last week I met some elderly people there. Some of the septuagenarians began asking me if Trump must be a homo sapien. In addition to being German, the majority of those women were also French and Italian.
It must be connected to their genetic negativity in the Sinhalese race that some of our Sinhalese women moved to the United States in order to inherit the kind of corrupt politicians.
/
ramona therese fernando / April 14, 2025
HT,……No, I am being very direct. We were talking about Trump’s rage which is connected to former Lankan ministers and their cronies stealing the American dollar given as grants, donations, and loans to build up Sri Lanka in line with American policy, but instead used by these political people to invest in all other things like BRICS and Dubai…….the situation that one was hoping the NPP government should have handled as its first step. We do understand however, the need for NPP to dismantle this gradually, though it could be sped up a bit.

I think there are parallels with Trump vote base, the white christian middle America & the Sinhala Buddhist nationalists who voted for MR & GR, despite the cronyism, corruption, abuse of power & mismanagement, all taken up by the single ‘make the country great again’ rhetoric. However, when the country went bankrupt, the average voter turned to the new kid on the block, hoping for the same. I was sceptic about the NPP, particularly, with their JVP connection & ‘socialist’ agenda but in the absence of a credible alternative, I would have voted for the AKD & Co, just on their pledge to eliminate corruption & bring those culprits to justice but even then, I knew it would be a tall order.
It is refreshing that the author has come out with some home truths that RW was underrated. I lost faith in RW some time ago & he is not a charismatic leader who turned a blind eye to corruption by his cronies but had he taken a backseat & allowed a better leadership to take over, I am sure SL would be on the path to recovery instead of still wandering in the dark.

You may be right about RTF, but the deeper issue runs far beyond her. Most Sri Lankans engage with politics not through reason or foresight, but through emotion. Decisions are made based on what feels right, not what is right. That emotional traction—unchecked by critical thought—is why we keep empowering the very people who drag us backwards.
.
And it’s exhausting, day in and day out, to engage with a public discourse that feels like it’s driven by primal instinct rather than intellect. Our way of life has been systematically reduced to a cycle of emotional reactions, blind reverence, and cultural theatrics. An education system that discourages independent thought, and a cultural narrative obsessed with 2,500-year-old myths of racial superiority—these are the chains that keep us marching in place, convinced we’re the chosen, while we drown in our own ignorance.

rtf, I was just so sick of the old set of rogues that ruined the country for decades until the end of 2024! To be honest, I never thought the masses would ever elect a government like NPP to clean the political cesspit we were in! It is so consoling that I don’t even care whether the NPP deals with past murderers or gets any stolen money back. My main hope and concern is that they just keep doing the wonderful things they’re doing now without rot getting in, and make this country livable for its already wretched people. To see the country become prosperous and Sinhalese, Tamils Muslims and others living in harmony irrespective of their differences. That’s enough for me, and anything else would just be a bonus.

In my view, those who can’t or don’t keep their word, as the writer has aptly illustrated, are simply not trustworthy. Given time, they will go back on their promises—without exception. That is the plain, obvious reality.

I beg to differ. Ramona is quite sharp. When she says something like the Lankan elite have stashed foreign aid money in overseas accounts – this is actually documented in the “Panama Papers.” Trump is unpredictable. There are quite a few in his Party who don’t like him. Regarding Sheet, well, yeah, that individual is a time waster.
/
ramona therese fernando / April 14, 2025
Thanks Lester. Leave alone the Panama Papers. Just look at how many Lankans own properties in Dubai. Look at how may own jobs in places like Dubai with Lankan political patronage. Look at how may own cars with the 300% tariff. Look at how many can afford Western tertiary education for their children on Lankan salaries and relatively low-level salaries from places like Dubai. If not the aforesaid corruption, taxes are not being paying on Lankan businesses utilizing the skill and hard-work of the common Lankan worker. The rich are not taxed even with the NPP government. For the moment, NPP seems to want to follow Trump’s policies in building up the Oligarchy. But American Oligarchs actually create business opportunity and jobs with well-rounded salaries and wages for their people. We don’t know if and how the NPP intends to utilize the Lankan Kleptocratic money-potential to create jobs with appropriate pay-scales. Right now they are using loans from other places to develop the country even if they have removed small-scale corruption. They are not explicit enough on how they intend to get the money for country development. But it’s still early in their tenure. We will give them 2 years to give the country a coherent economic plan.

A fair summary of the history of the JVP.
But the JVP is not yet known for serious political analysis (let alone Marxist) since the pathetic 5-lectures by its founder.
It abandoned its rural class base by mid-1990s.
Its attitude towards India was not always hostile. India was its patron for short spells in the 1990s. It was full of praise for India for warning LTTE against attacking the army base in the north. It was not critical of India until much after the war.
Its political path seems far more opportunist than that of the CP and LSSP since early 1960s.

Rajesh,
.
Let me remind you that these are the very same people who stood on the sidelines when Sri Lanka plunged into chaos in 2022. When the country was at rock bottom—economically crippled, politically unstable, and crying out for leadership—they had a golden opportunity to step up and prove their patriotism in action.
.
So why didn’t they take responsibility then? Why didn’t they lead the transformation they so passionately speak of now?
.
It’s easy to make grand promises when you’re not in the hot seat. But real patriotism is tested in times of crisis—not when the path is safe and public sentiment is conveniently turning in your favor.
.
Before you place blind faith in slogans and surface-level rhetoric, ask yourself: where were they when the country truly needed bold, decisive leadership?
/
leelagemalli / April 13, 2025
Dear HT,
.
What constitutes strong leadership?
He or she should be able to collaborate with all available work forces to benefit the masses. Let’s look back and compare.
Since July 2022, Honourable RW has led a country that has been looted to the point where only $20 million in foreign reserves remain. However, he was alone in parliament, along with all of his rivals. Despite being defeated by lies from PACHORIS aka AKD on September 21, 2024, RW s bold leadership enabled him to collaborate with diverse rivals and increase foreign reserves to $6600 million.
–
According to examples, unlike in the days of the late Hornousble Mangagala Samaraweera, the FM did not arrange a dinner with the Indian delegation that was visiting so that they could exchange a lot. Instead, AKD organized events as the president proceeded, and even though they signed and agreed to more than seven bilateral agreements, not much was discussed. During that alleged official visit, which was paid by Modi, the most abusive but predictable leader of powerful India, I have no doubt that Indians (US) brutally mistreated AKD’s incompetence and stupidity.

You seem like a very sensitive person who would not have understood why the UNP lost.Who had that agenda? Were all of the nefarious goals set by the SLPP combined into that Bond scam?
According to my information, it was the RAJAPAKSHE-FACTOR and the deceptive mainstream media, which exclusively serves their leaders through their TV media whore houses. Given the conditioned and weakened mindset of lanken voters—who use their emotions but nothing else, which is why they fall in the same pite nights and daylights—GOTA’s ascent to power is also understandable.
–
There are many examples: Our voters are in a cruel position because of Sinhala-buddhism and their inhibition of human evolution.
–
Like it or not, believe it or not, you can bet me that in about six months, RANIL will be needed to save this country, which is currently run by a group of dishonest people who have no prior experience in government.

They also lack any foreseeable instincts. They are only proficient in surface-level rhetoric; they are not good at anything else. Anyone who attended a local university in the past should be well aware of the facts regarding JVP rhetoric and their malicious and jealously motivated news.

I think LM sees the world (especially SL) exactly for what it is. Afterall 6.9 million morons voted for Gota. Then the same lot (more or less) jumped onboard the NPP wagon.
The results are exactly the same as far as I can see.
We seriously work on the mindsets of the moronic people first if you ask me.
Then maybe we can think about electing a decent set of leaders.
It takes a keen mind to cut through the bullshit the politicians dish out and see them for who they truly are.
There is a saying that says that “leaders are a reflection of the people”
You can see clearly in the case of Trumps America.
Trump tells the moronic, inbred-bred, dimwitted, necked Americans, racist, bigoted, religious extremist scum what they want to hear and he does what he wants. The same difference in SL sadly!

HT,
..
I thank you for your comment.
The problem is that, despite my frequent visits to my homeland, our JIT has no pulse feeling for Sri Lanka because he has been living abroad for the past few decades.
I only ask why they spread false information about RW if they are forced to carry out all the measures that the gentleman took in order to save the country from falling deeper.
. Mr. Wickramsignhe would only be criticized by lankens, who are cloaked in hatred and gossip under the guise of SB-jathaka stories, rather than by any expert in the world.
To be honest, was there a single leader with the courage to save the country in July 2022?
–
Furthermore, people were forced to believe that there were numerous other options available to save the nation’s economy in addition to the IMF. They had dreamt of bringing in enormous sums of money every other month by lying about the diaspora and their role in it. Not even 1 million of US dollars came in yet instead.

However, we are aware that many people who live abroad lack the resources to contribute if they are not eligible for large salaries. Following the COVID crisis, European nations and their citizens are finding it difficult to go about their daily lives. The cost of living has increased by 30–50% without the necessary wage increases.

As of right now, what has happened to all of the OUTSTANDING promises that each of them made? Dr. Amarasooriya is completely shut out and denied the opportunity to host a dinner for the Indian delegation, which would have allowed for a variety of interactions between the two nations. The public, however, misses the late Mr. Mangala Smaaraweera, Mr. Kardigarmar, and other strong leaders who wisely managed foreign affairs. Do you recall?

LM and HT, I must admit that it was a very rare instant of a ‘reaction spiral’ I got into, out of utter frustration. I humbly admit that I failed where I should have simply kept ignoring. My broader opinion always has been, whatever the political view one holds, a decent time must be given to ANY new government to see what they are going to do. How they formulate policies, acts, laws to mend and lead the nation, and how they conduct themselves in the eyes of the masses. ANY government deserves at least six months – one year to show what the basic trajectory they are planning to tread. Thrashing them right from the election night does not bring any political maturity to the discussion that you yourself place so high! Shooting non-stop, baseless slanders to a government which is doing their best to bring back the normalcy, civility and good governance that had been ruined for over 50 years in this land does not help anyone! While my questions about Ranil went absolutely unanswered, but getting irrelevant narratives to the points I made, I do not believe that we will find any productive engagement here on this subject, so I rest my case, and wish you well!

“but the country has not progressed at all,”
R, how do you measure progress?
Health, education and social equality are not measures of [progress I suppose!

Hi, OC. You once stated that Chathuranga Abeysinghe is a good and trustworthy person. However, he has proven the opposite in terms of the Trump administration’s three-month suspension of imposing trade tariffs. To the best of my knowledge, the US government decided to delay that by three months, not because of Chathuranga’s letter to the Trump administration. I THINK everyone should feel ashamed about their birth. Why is it that these men are completely shameless in telling big lies one after the other?

LM,
I think what I said was that Chaturanga as the NPP’S economics spokesman was out of his depth on TV debates. Also, that being a businessman and a Tuition master himself, he would be less likely to be against private educational institutions. His father Nihal however is one of the hard-core 1988 group.
“Why is it that these men are completely shameless in telling big lies .” We all know that politicians are liars. At least today’s JVP isn’t collecting our ID cards.😁

OC,
Didn’t you hear his speech about the letter he or the government wrote to Trump, so they were tempted to give them a 90-day window until the tariffs went into effect?

The letter from Sri Lanka was not the only reason for the postponement; many other countries, including American entrepreneurs, also opposed it. I never expected Chaturanga or other foreign-qualified graduates to fall to Galle’s lower level, said Nalinda Hewage. So pathetic.
To the best of my knowledge, in Europe, if one lie is hidden behind another, MPs or Ministers are forced to resign on their own.

Today, in power, the same party continues implementing these very policies, (signing agreement with india )ones it opposed just months ago, with neither hesitation nor explanation.
The NPP in Sri Lanka follows a similar policy to the current government but focuses on rectifying flawed agreements and maintaining a corruption-free approach. They acknowledge India’s vital support during the country’s economic crisis, recognizing that “a friend in need is a friend indeed.” As a result, trust has been built, and mutual cooperation between the two nations has grown stronger.

In a nutshell: PM Dr. Amarsooriya and AKD leadership.
–
Did they perform their duties effectively during the Indian leader’s recent visit and his diligence? A dinner with the visiting Indian delegation would have allowed for more discussion and improved clarity if Dr. Harini Amarasooriya had been that foresighted a leader. They simply avoided it, and no appropriate discussions were had before signing the documents, in contrast to the days of the former FMs and PMs. As a result, all agreements were signed without careful consideration. Today, the nation resembles combustible rods covered in ashes.

Nothing is new today; everything that Mr. RW began is still ongoing. He deserves our gratitude at least today.

RW leadership with his rivals in a small cabinet.

To restore normalcy with today’s handlings, his strong leadership was able to boost foreign reserves from 20 million to 6600 million in just two years.
Within six months, inflation dropped from 70% to 1% or zero.
–
Normalcy was restored and foreign remittances increased.
Additionally, the tourism industry was revitalized, resulting in over 2 million visitors by the end of 2024. The AKD and other rival groups organized large-scale protests, which all RW leadership participated in. Since AKD is in power today, the majority of them have gone into hibernation. However, since they lack experience and strong leadership, there are no noticeable changes to the systems.
