Kumar David: Left Intellectual, Activist, Friend, Rascal

By Jayampathy Wickramaratne

Dr. Jayampathy Wickramaratne PC

Much has already been written, and more will be written in the coming days about the much-loved Kumar David— electrical engineer, brilliant academic, Left intellectual, activist and writer who passed away on Monday in Los Angeles. Others will write about his academic achievements, his contribution to the Sri Lankan Left, his writings, etc. My short piece is more anecdotal.

Kumar had been unwell for some time. In his last email to me on 14 August, he wrote: ‘I am still in LA. Health not too good. Hope to be in SL early 2025 if my health improves.’ Irrepressible as he always was, he added: ‘I understand that you are conning the poor buggers in Papua New Guinea or some such place on Constitutional matters.’

Professor Kumar David (1941-2024)

I cannot remember when I first met Kumar. It must have been in 1965 or 1966. In May 1965, while still at school, I joined the Lanka Sama Samaja Party as a youth leaguer in Kandy. In January 1966, I was promoted to ‘candidate member’ of the Kandy LSSP Local, to which Kumar was attached. Those days, we had party names by which we were identified in the Local. Kumar David was ‘Goldin’, and Vickramabahu was ‘Parker-Smith’- both names of authors of engineering books.

In 1966, Kumar left for the United Kingdom and returned in 1969 with a PhD from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. It was soon after the famous student protests in Europe, which enthused students worldwide. The LSSP group in Peradeniya organised a lecture by Kumar on the topic ‘Student Unrest in Europe’, but it was disallowed by his own teacher, Prof. E.O.E. Pereira, then Vice-Chancellor, who probably feared that Kumar would call the students to arms! The lecture was finally held at the Physics lecture theatre after Dr. Osmund Jayaratne assured Dean Appapillai that there was nothing to fear. The lecture theatre was packed, with many standing, and Ossie introduced Kumar. Kumar’s opening words were: ‘If you have come here expecting fireworks, you will be disappointed. We are going to discuss seriously what happened in Europe and why.’

While at Law College, I helped publish ‘The Nation’, the popular Left weekly edited by Hector Abhayavardhana. An editorial board of sorts met on Sunday evenings at Hector’s place along Chitra Lane: Kumar David, Jayantha Somasundaram, Vijay Kumar, Handy Perimpanayagam, myself, and others who dropped in. For me, it was a learning experience. Kumar used to mischievously annoy Hector with criticisms of the United Left government. Hector would refer to Kumar as ‘the rascal’ albeit in his absence!

Kumar was funny, indeed. He had nicknames for those close to him- Vijay Kumar was ‘Kochchi’ because of his Kerala roots, Lankaloka was ‘Ceylon World,’ Wilegoda was ‘Hole Works’ and I was ‘Jumpy.’ Some of the nicknames he coined are unprintable. He would spice conversations with Sinhala obscenities, which friends were required to tolerate. ‘Machang, I am not fluent in Sinhala, no?’ he would mischievously justify. Once, at a discussion, we agreed after continuous protests that he could utter an obscenity only once every five minutes, and I was appointed ‘timekeeper.’ Needless to say, I ‘resigned’ after some time.

When he began writing regularly to the papers, Kumar asked me to suggest a penname for him. I suggested ‘Aswini,’ his other forename, of which many were unaware. He said he never liked it. I then suggested ‘Goldin,’ and he was surprised I remembered his party name. He finally decided to write under his name.

When Ranjika and I decided to marry in secret, it was Kumar who helped us, driving early in the morning to fetch her on her way to the school she taught at in Udadumbara and dropping her off just in time for her to return to a relative’s house where she was staying as if she was returning from school. I still remember the car number 6406 but forget which Sri series it was.

Kumar married Rohini, whose surname, Leula, is the name of the village my family moved to from Udispattuwa to facilitate our schooling in Kandy. I offer my deepest sympathies to Rohini, her son Amrit, and her sisters Kanthi and Tilaka.

The Sri Lankan Left has lost an intellectual giant. Readers of The Island and Colombo Telegraph will miss Kumar on Sundays. I will miss a rascal of a friend. Farewell, Kumar!

Thank you Dr. Wickramaratne for your revelation about late Prof. K.D. I don’t think it’s just an eulogy, it’s your experience of the great man. I never thought his health was bad as he submitted many articles to CT where many of us anonymous COMMENTERS could share our thoughts. It is my wish that more real golden sons will be born in this country to educate varied peoples in the society.

    https://www.ft.lk/opinion/In-appreciation-of-Professor-Kumar-David/14-768153

I noticed late Prof. K.D had a clear vision about the future of Sri Lanka. Some of his articles were based on abstract engineering subjects that were not clear to me. However, I am proud to have read more of his articles, specially published in CT.

Like me, he was not happy with the barbaric JVP’s behavior but respected the NPP and its future.

JVP won’t win if NPP is strong as everyone in the South and across the country accepted JVP as barbarians after studying how innocent youths were killed across the country.

Unlike many other retired professionals, he never stopped and always produced articles to CT all these past few years. His pen educated us all equally. In retrospect, he was one of the very few writers who contributed regularly.

Even if we all leave our lives one day, let more of this gentleman or others like him be born in this country to save this nation.
May you rest in peace, Prof. We will really miss you in this CT forum— diving in Sadness – LM.

Clever people have radical and interesting ideas, some of which are either wrong or misunderstood by others. KD was one of those. He had many unusual ideas outside of his chosen field of expertise, especially in economics. It was a pleasure to read KD’s articles. In his absence, the IQ level of CT may sink further, due to poor English skills (AI cannot fix this), senility, and other factors. As I recall, one amateur scientist here kept parroting Einstein’s GR without understanding that Newton’s Law of Gravitation gives an equivalent result to within 1/1000th of the result predicted by GR. In fact, many professional physics papers written today assume gravity is a force of attraction (because objects on Earth don’t travel at relativistic speeds). Newton’s Law put people people on the moon but some get carried away by BBC.

        OC and LS,

I felt that you both and others must have felt a bit bored in the absence of ChatGPT Scientist for the past few weeks.
This was part of the discussion of Newtonian fundamentals down to some basic levels of school mathematics at the time, like we are in an academic forum. Rowan Sebastian Atkinson or the like will interpret it differently, however, our people will not prioritize the need of the moment, so we will remain forever like the stinking filth of Lake Byra.
Now AKD is dreaming that digitizing the public sector will be as easy as his stage provocations. The re-negotiationas with the International Monetary Fund and the work on their NPP system of governance are all erased by the man whose knowledge is confined to a school going boy.
Wait and see, how these people will continue…..Thanks to RW, the foreign exchange reserve has risen to almost 5 billion and paves the way for normalization of payments for essentials. However, AKD and their men accused Mr. RW of taking more loans, and the shameless AKD and his small cabinet continue to do so today. How can this happen.?… As if the whole sun has risen with the dawn of their presidency, the stupid people are fed by other palatable stories. … Who do they think the people are? Are they all equally stupid ?Angry voters elected him, but not even rice is avaialbe for the daily use today. what is behind RICE-mafia today ?

          Hello Leelagemalli,
i was in at the beginning of the UK Government’s program to digitise all of the Departments and try to integrate all Citizens interactions with a “One Stop Shop”. There was a secure Network (CUGs Closed User Groups) throughout all of the UK (this was prior to the Internet).
I won’t go into all the details, however it was mostly successful. Large Government IT Contracts have a History of Project Creep, Cost Overruns, Software Problems and Underestimation of Demand. Using Virtual Server Technology they can lessen the Energy Requirements.
To undertake such Tasks in Sri Lanka will require dedicated Teams of, System Architects, Network Engineers, IT Specialists, Training Teams and a Robust Infrastructure including DataCentres (even if they do go for a “Cloud Solution”) with Clean 24/7 Electrical Power. Secure Logistics for the Transport and Installation is also essential.
I have only scratched the surface – is AKD and NPP/JVP up to the job? First they need a Vision and a Strategy.
          Best regards

” is AKD and NPP/JVP up to the job? First they need a Vision and a Strategy”

I do not believe at all that he will rule for one year. AKD seems like a joke to me today. Price of Coconut, rice and other essentials are on a rise today.

Btw, I doubt if Deepti de Silva is Lester. How do they abuse “thumb-up for comments”? Not many seem to respect DS, but she scores more “likes”.
LS, you can get busy arguing with Lester from today on. I will ignore him in the coming days.

A good colleague of mine (political scientist, swiss) recently insisted to me that communism is like keeping animals in cages. I somewhat agree with him.
He believes that communism can open people’s eyes but it is not practical for people’s whole life. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, people held under the Soviet Union began to enjoy freedom. Russian, Ukrainian doctors and other professionals infiltrated Germany, UK, France and many other countries. Even today, despite raising voice against democratic rule, it is reluctantly maintained. Some thought east europeans would be lazy, however, some I know are working harder than the average western burgher by integrating into the systems of Western Europe.
      .
Needless to say, everyone is obviously tongue-tied today about the false but dream-like pledges made by AKD before becoming the president of the country filled with modayas than brain users.

JVP hardliners initially did not agree to Indianisation but today it is the JVP that has been tamed by the Indians. Even the elders of Janatha Vimukti Peramuna do not speak a single word against the democratic freedom of the people today. How come ?

        Hello Leelagemalli,
I have worked with quite a few Romanians and they are anything but lazy. Of course the Romanians that I worked with were Educated IT Professionals and Engineers. They were very critical of the amount of Corruption that still infected their Politicians. But none of them wanted a return to the Stalinist dictatorship of Nicolae Ceaușescu. They had also celebrated the destruction of the Berlin Wall and the re-unification of Germany
Communism may be a nebulous term to many people, who still associate it with the Ideology of the Soviet Union and other so-called Marxist Countries.
Marx analysed the relationship between the Working Class and the means of Production. He asserted that Surplus Value was created by the workers and appropriated by the Capitalists (who owned the means of Production).
Capitalism has a long History, but it is not by any means the only (or final) means by which Goods and Services can be produced. Money lenders and Banks have been around for a long time before Capitalism (e.g. The Templars)
The future is NOT pre-determined, but change happens – sometimes slowly (La longue durée) and sometimes very quickly (Revolutions).
        Best regards

          Dear LS,
I think we can generalize that East Europeans are generally lazy. Many colleagues living in Dresden, East Berlin and Rostock are said to be very lazy.

I also noticed it while working in the lab for my postgraduate coursework. My cell culture work was conducted by one of the MTAs from the eastern part of the country. I couldn’t rely on her. I couldn’t trust my PhD colleague who was always late to work. I can share a wealth of experience about them.

The country then run by NC https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Ceau%C8%99escu Chathesco is today the favorite target of unskilled migrants in Sri Lanka.

I know the Germans hire Romanians for their asparagus harvesting project in the summer. In addition, some come to Germany after completing their medical studies at their universities. I knew that medical education in Romania is very strong and well-regarded in Europe.

        LM,
“After the fall of the Berlin Wall, people held under the Soviet Union began to enjoy freedom”
This “freedom” is a relative thing. In the 1920’s and 30’s some black American engineers and scientists moved to the Soviet Union because it treated everyone equally. So, Blacks, who weren’t free in the US were free in the USSR. When the USSR turned itself into an empire after WW2, East Europeans were poorer than Westerners, but had better social security and education than before.
Was a Spanish guy under Franco as free as a Brit? No, not even as free as a Sri Lankan.
Were Christians and Muslims free in the Soviet Union? There are plenty still around, so they can’t have been too badly off.

Why did so many educated Sri Lankans take to communism when it is so insignificant in the rest of the world ? Is it fashionable to be a communist in SL ?

Also they condemn the West but go to the West for education, then to earn money and finally as refugees to escape to death squads in their country ! Many are in reality economic refugees

Somebody should study this cycle of nonsense !

Whenever I read one of Nimal Fernando’s comments I immediately get a picture of a Sri Lankan Henry Fonda on his Harley Davidson Chopper casually drifting down Route 69 (which I have driven on) on his way to Texas with Jack Kerouac – “Now we were on the great Texas plain and, as Dean said, You drive and drive and you’re still in Texas tomorrow night”.

You must have missed the bit where he tried to justify the bond scam (insider trading) by claiming it was profitable. He doesn’t understand that it was only profitable to Mahendran and those with insider knowledge. Of course the State took big losses.

                Dear Readers,

I interact more and more with Europeans who speak English (German, French, Swiss and many others) but as their second language, I sometimes make some avoidable mistakes in my English comments. I kept apologizing for it. Besides, most of the time, I make my comments while waiting in lounges at airports or train stations. I often travel a lot around Europe for my job.

I don’t want to stand out by arguing over the “basic level of physics” every basic graduate has to learn at first, especially in this forum. I know LankaSCOT can read me well. I have not been racist since childhood. Lancascott is the most respected commenter on this forum. His background is clear to many.
                .
However, I respect our old CODGER even more since his days in CT. He sounds like a Wiktionary to me. I have learned a lot from him. If he hadn’t been there, I don’t think I would have continued to stay in CT.
                .
His arguments often coincide with mine, so I don’t need to spare contradictions. He is almost brilliant in many fields, but not about “Rajapakse politics ” that ruined this nation.
                :
Lester or similar boastful men (I doubt he is DS’s siamese twin) cannot exist without Rajapakse or similar human beasts. May god bless SRILANKA !

          DS,
You don’t deserve to be given history lessons, because you are wilfully ignorant. But why don’t you check out how narrowly the Communists lost in Italy and France? The Communists might not have won in UK, but the Labour Party formed a government in 1923. Anyway, I was not talking about UK but the world in 1956. That year the Sovet Union launched Sputnik, and was consistently ahead till 1969. A state in India elected a Communist government. The existence of the Soviet Union forced change for the better in the West.

            Hello OC,
Most people either forget or don’t know what happened in Greece after the Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill carve up of Europe at Potsdam and Yalta (1945).
The Greece Resistance had fought the Germans to the point of regaining around 80% of the Country.
At Yalta a scrap of paper, passed between the three Leaders, decided the fate of Europe. With the percentages agreed Churchill having 90% of Greece embarked on eliminating the Resistance Movement (EAM) which was mainly Communist. Even before this he had taken action against them – https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/30/athens-1944-britains-dirty-secret
The British were also involved in such Dirty Tricks in Vietnam and Indonesia after the end of WW2.

“”OC you are wrong again !

However, in Germany (a country of 83 million), the SPD (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Democratic_Party_of_Germany) and the CDU (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Democratic_Union_of_Germany)
are roughly equal in their respective parliaments. Germany’s SPD are not pure communists but more like “Sri Lankan” #left parties.
Why should it always come from the UK (60 million)?

Is it because a wicked woman of our hell (srilanka) has taken refuge there?

        OC,
“if you were in UK at that time, you wouldn’t have got very far. All that changed, partly due to Communism. Only now is it insignificant”

why it is now insigifant is connected with having practically studied how far it could go. Those days, it was still in experiemental stage.

At the time, the UK could no longer accept an influx of refugees from the developing world. So, I don’t think that DS or anyone can claim asylum in that country and bankrupt its economy which is now in a really dangerous situation. My neighbors, former powerful politicians in Germany and the EU, shared this with me recently.

old codger, nothing in UK changed due to communism, except now with liberal PM, Hamas terrorist activists have got into the Westminster Parliament. Their actions need to be checked as Israel will never be moved out, as God has promised.

          DTG,
I understand that some segments of any population will not be able to see beyond their level, however, your sticking with your god theories is not applicable in every context. Not Hamas but israelis back by developed world is to be blamed for middleeast crisis.

According to you, we should put the enitre blame on LTTE but not the govt and the sinhala racists in srilanken crisis ?

Is it at all right ?

JVP uprising was due to the political deficiencies and several other factors. However, with them being given ruling power today, they too struggle to settle even simple things let alone designing “a rich country for all”.

If there is a God and he or she is omnipotent in human survival, why do Rajakasha and other great criminals still go unpunished? This is a million dollar question to me….. but to you ?

I mean LS has made it very clear that your beliefs will get you nowhere.
I think homo sapiens should have religions to give them some kind of guidance but it should be too involved in anyone’s lifestyle.

leelagemalli, you are wrong again. My beliefs have got me to the point of knowing God’s Love and his Presence and sensing his thoughts when I ask. How can an unbeliever like LS ever understand or grasp these things, but I don’t blame him. He needs to repent and invite the Presence to come to him and may get a shock when he sees what happens. Who says that the robbing family will go unpunished. There are consequences to all we say and do, but most don’t know the timing .Anyone saying “If there is a God” better watch out.

There are many things happening all over the world hence it does not matter what UK PM thinks or does.

For instance there are intellectually honest academics and analysts (though few) still talking hard truth about crumbling old world order.
Please listen to academics in these clips:

      deepthi silva,

Educated Lankans didn’t turn to communism. They only turned to Socialized Capitalism similar to the likes of the US-Democrats and the British-Labour party.

        Rtf,

“Educated Lankans didn’t turn to communism.”

Is it correct to generalize it like this? Who according to you are educated Sri Lankans?
        Vasu? (patta hora, Rajapakshe backlicker)
Late Professor K.D (one of the intelligent leftists we ever were known to be)
        Colvin R. Silva?
SA Wickramasinghe? (who had then come to the ancestral house of the south)
Or AKIDists (that have now lost with their primary ideology)?

According to me, in an any population, you have different thinkers. Therefore, whether they are intelligent or not, they tend to attach their thoughts to existing ideologies.

          Deepthi Silva,

“Why did so many educated Sri Lankans take to communism when it is so insignificant in the rest of the world ?”

Because the Soviet Union was very powerful at the time. It played a pivotal role in WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Besides producing many outstanding intellectuals, it nearly won the space race. Without ex-Nazi rocket scientists, NASA would have lost. Now there is only one true superpower and that is the USA. There is no Communist nation left except North Korea. China is a paper tiger.

“one of the intelligent leftists we ever were known to be”

This is English? Or gobbledygook? My earlier point is proven.

        Hello Ramona,
Try to read a little bit of the Labour Party’s History. By the way they are now, under Starmer, on their way to becoming very Authoritarian. His Zionism is a reflection of the Israeli Zionist mindset and its relationship to other Middle East Countries.
Starmer has always feared the Working Class. Tony Blair started the Castration of the Labour Party, Starmer is trying to finish it.
        Best regards

          _
Even if Labour and Democrats are not optimum, they are a far cry up the Democratic-Socialist Scale compared to Rajapaksa & Ranil monetary experimentation.

Labour and Democrats actually tax their rich in varying grades till their books are balanced and people have jobs.

Rajapaksas didn’t tax anyone, took out loans, and made it a free-for-all for those in their party, to splurge on investments in foreign entities like Panama Island, Cayman Island, Swiss-bank, Bank of Monaco, also BRICS, Greeks, and the audacity of actually placing money of the hard-working-suffering-Lankan worker of both races on NYC Investment Banking!…..such as what the first-world capitalistic countries do with their extras AFTER ensuring their people have money and jobs. Actually first-world is depending on dumbos like us to boost up their off-shoring, and then the IMF benevolently comes in to do the damage control.

Ranil took out even more loans, took away the traditional jobs of 1.5 million workers in the midst of bankruptcy, created new first-world thought-bubble jobs, and taxed the middle and poor classes for it.

            Dear Readers,

Ramona says again that Ranil took more loans. She does not utter a single word about the speed of AKD’s loans today. omg !

At the same time, she proudly confesses that the Rajapaksas did not impose taxes. Even Ethiopians started imposing taxes lately.

This crazy woman as many other thanakola eaters in the south is loyal to Rajapaksa even today.

People in the south are like that,….some women worship Rajapaksa without any reasonable reason.. It is really an addict. These women were constantly misled by SATAKAYA and mustaches of the Rajapaksas. So called cheek kissing public gestures went viral making BLOOD suckers are just harmless reptiles. Truth was buried intentionally. fooling project was continued by MAHINDA DOGGY CHINTHANAYA media shows.

After someone commented on our going to the west for studies work and retirement like Kumar David, I am curious.
There was a time when the US banned communists. When I first applied for a US visa, I had to certify that I had never been a member of a communist party.
Accordingly the US denied a visa to Carlo Fonseka even as a WHO delegate to a conference (That was resolved after intense negotiations,).
I wonder how Kumar David, also an LSSP man like Carlo Fonseka, got to live in the US. Perhaps the ban on communists is off now?

      Hello Jaffna Man,
I had to answer the same question when I applied for a B1 Business Visa back in 1979. But I am not sure if they ask the same questions for Tourist Visas. Maybe if you make Redemption they will let you in.
      Best regards

      JM,
Yes, the ban is off now. Communists are no longer a threat, but, strangely, Russians and Chinese still are. So all that fuss was not about ideology, after all?

Apparently, in addition to checking communist leanings, they also ask “do you intend to overthrow the government if the United States by force?” And anyone who says “Yes, Sir” will be considered more stupid than Mr Trump to be allowed in.

Stupidity is no criterion to refuse a visa to the US.
It could even be a qualification to be allowed entry.

Flattered to be taken a bit seriously there, thanks SJ.
I was also asked this same question at a US embassy visa counter some decades ago. “Are you a communist?” he asked “Well, Sir, I am a Buddhist!” I replied, thinking of the philosophical similarities between the two; he must have thought of the differences and let me in.

Were you a Buddhist at the time?
If not, can they penalize you for misleading a visa officer?
