Dear Mr. Rajapaksa,
Assuming the ‘tense situation’ in the country seems to be simmering down somewhat in the eyes of the ignorant, thought I will take this opportunity also to refresh the nation of fickle minds about an impending and a catastrophic juncture this country could be facing. But let me first give credit where it is due.
It should be mentioned that the whole nation is indeed grateful to you for being instrumental in giving leadership towards defeating one of the most ruthless terror outfits in the world. Your careful planning and efforts in beautifying the city and its infrastructure is another achievement that few could criticize. While facilitating the building of high-rise apartment complexes and mixed developments for the wealthy, providing livable housing at the same time to the displaced and the less-fortunate is also nothing short of a milestone that will be etched in the minds of many for years to come.
Leaders should be respected and not feared… or so I used to grow up believing in. Mere mention of your name alone creates a sense fear psychosis. And it makes me wonder what could have befallen the ‘nation of lions’. Could it be the silencing of dissenting voices? Or the extra-judicial killings by para-military forces loyal if not aligned to you? Or to a lesser extent, could it be the commanding of loyalty by inducements of monetary rewards and top public postings, especially in the Foreign Service? Either case, it would be next to impossible to please all your detractors and all the time. And it would be only fair that I remind you of your role in the soon to be overthrown government, lest you forget and before the ordinary masses run out of patience and cast their first stone.

You have been suspected of giving orders to eliminate surrendering LTTE militants, to torture and kill captured leaders and their foot soldiers belonging to the same militant outfit, plundering of war booty running into hundreds of millions of dollars for personal gain and ordering the continuous firing at enemy targets and hospitals by paying scant regard to civilian casualties among others. While at no point I believe your intentions were to cause TAMIL civilian casualties necessarily, I am pretty sure you would adopt the same tactic should a Sinhala or a Muslim militant group resort to using human shields in a battle. Hence, acknowledgment of your resolve in defeating ‘your enemies’, be they from any ethnicity and by all means, becomes equally important. Also, I sure hope you will be absolved of complicity if not direct involvement in mass graves unearthed in the recent past in Matale etc.
You have been implicated in fraudulent arms procurements, once again running into hundreds of millions of Dollars. The ‘MIG’ deal and Lanka Logistics purchases indeed raises a can of worms. Your modus operandi of giving multi-million Dollar contracts to private business entities using state institutions that you ‘oversee’, and without any established tender procedures and deriving a ‘sizeable’ personal income in return from those operations is no more a secret now. The business and your association with M/s Avant Garde Maritime Security, Kotte in securing major shipping lanes from piracy is just one ‘partnership’ that I believe I need not remind you of.
Assuming you have amassed a fortune enough to sustain a dozen generations carrying the infamous ‘Rajapaksa’ name, I question your wisdom in doing so. The 7-11 attendant or the computer operator or whatever that you were while eking out a meager living in the US, isn’t it a sharp contrast when comparing it with your present lifestyle? If only your government stipend is sustaining you and your family, would you come clean with audited accounts of your net worth for the sake of good governance? And if you are equally zealous in your attitude in acquiring ill-gotten wealth as much as you were during the time of war, wouldn’t that be for your children whom I believe are not imbeciles or retards? Would you seriously compromise their future too in a possible ‘court of accountability’? At old age and claiming to be a devout Buddhist, have you forgotten that, based on life-expectancy averages, your days are numbered in this world and the fact that only your good deeds can help you in the life here-after?
You claim to have won a war and bringing about a sense normalcy to the country. Yet you have a security contingent of over 1000 protecting you around-the-clock. Is it not a form of imprisonment in your own country, unable to move about freely? Does it not also indicate your failure to establish peace? Is it not the injustice you perpetrate that gives you a feeling of insecurity and sleepless nights? It might be possible that you would have established safe havens overseas in the event of a change of government in Sri Lanka. I remember you flying to Singapore just before the last Presidential elections over a minor health scare. Were you not heading Lanka Hospital (the best-equipped) at that time? When you travel overseas, does the Department of Customs check your luggage for millions of Dollars in currency notes since you are only a government servant? At a time when even gas station attendant jobs are being snapped up fast, I would rule out the possibility of you returning back in to the US. But Seychelles and rogue states in Africa do come into mind considering your inevitable circumstances. Wherever you may choose to flee to, I wonder if your conscience would allow you to experience contentment and happiness especially now that you are reaching the last stages of your life.
Increased budget allocations for Defense (in peace times),militarization of fabric of a society, politicization of State & law enforcement departments/armed forces and the ‘hijacking’ of the judiciary by your government is the result of unpopularity amongst the majority of the masses. Your method of suppressing dissension violently and unjustly will give rise to more protests leading to the inevitable and much sooner. However sincere you may be in your intentions for the good of the country, failure to establish accountability for abuse of power and corruption has taken us to a point of destruction and bankruptcy. Power corrupts and undoing the damage and future progress can take place only with a new leadership at the helm. Spending millions of Dollars on lobbyists with little known credentials while blowing ‘hot air’ and making pseudo nationalist speeches on local platforms defying pressure from the ‘Western hemisphere’ does not yield positive results. Your failure to address the grievances of victims of state-sponsored terror and that of militant groups and lawlessness in the country defines your unsuitability to hold onto your present job in the Ministry of defense.
Creating a right-wing militant form of Buddhism and creating the hype and a fear syndrome about a non-existent Islamic militancy does not do favors either in prolonging your quest for power and/or curry favors with the West. It is matter of time before all your ill-informed and ill-conceived plans are exposed.
With the noose tightening around you, ‘your armed forces’ and the government you represent in nations ‘championing’ human rights causes, I cannot help but feel remorse for your sleepless nights and the quagmire you could be facing domestically should there be a ‘reversal of fortunes’ in a game where ‘kings and queens’ used to hold sway.
Pawns they may be, but the game-changer is not far off from your door-step. In an era where mightier dictators are falling like dominoes, let this be the first offer of safe passage to you and your family. The rise of ‘power of the people’ cannot be tamed, and me being a member, I am willing to extend an olive branch should you choose to accept. For starters, your immediate resignation as Secretary to the Ministry of defense will signal a positive step in the right direction.

The Buddhist monk in charge of the temple asked her to send the child to the temple and she sent him there because they were poor. There was no possibility for them to pay the money for tuition fees. That was the reason why they sent the boy to the temple school.When the child began to refuse going to the temple school so adamantly, grandmother had to look for the reason. It was then only that she discovered that the child who was sent to learn good behavior, ethics and Buddha’s Dharma from the monk had in fact been abused by the monk.

Story as told by the grandmother of the child.
My grandson went to the temple school. He went to the temple school of Habaraduwa, managed by one monk by the name of Malgama Hemasiri. I accompanied the child to the temple several times. The Buddhist monk asked us to have a ‘Bhodhi Pooja’ and he told us that as the scholarship exam for the fifth standard is near, the two children can join the other children for classes at the temple. He was sent to the temple’s school in order to learn some arithmetic for the scholarship exam. I agreed with the monk when he made that suggestion. I respected him.
I got pens and the books as requested by the monk. Then the child took the books and went to the temple. He went like that for few days. There was no trouble. I gave ‘Dana’ to the temple. On the 22nd of every month there is a ‘Dana’ and I did those works relating to the ‘Dana’. There was the ‘Katina’ ceremony and I attended to that also. I had a ‘pooja’ there. Then I stayed at home.
One day, one child who was going to school with my son came. That child told me that something had happened. I asked him what kind of thing had happened. Again, he said that something had happened. I did not really take lot of notice about it.
Then the mother of the child called me one day and told me this. There is something that has happen to the child and he says he cannot go to school. I was sick. I had half paralysis. I cannot go about very much. Even despite of difficulties I somehow went at this request. When I went and asked that child, he told me something like this. He said that it came out of the mouth of the children. Then I asked what kind of thing are you talking? I am really very ashamed to talk about it what I heard. In the way that man would use a woman; this monk has used the child after taking him to a room. He has abused the child.
I had very severe sadness in my mind. I went on crying and asked what we can do about this. Then the person who told me about these things said that similar things has happen also to the son of their daughter. He has gone with that child to the police. I didn’t want to go to the police and I said we will go to the Temple’s Council (Dayaka Sabawa) about this. At our request, the council of temple was called. That was on the 29th of November 2009. We went to the council and we were seated. Then we were called and somebody said that people who want to talk about some problem about the monk can talk now.
We told them that the two children can talk and they could say what has happened. So the children were called. The children told what happened to this council. The both children told them what has happen to them. Then some people in the council shouted at us and said that they will not allow anything to be done against the monk. They said that they will not allow us to talk against the monk. They started threatening us. One person came forward and if you are not happy with the monk you should get out from this temple. Then we walked out. Then we walked out and we came out. We just prayed to God and we prayed to the ‘God of Hooniyan’ and said that the neck of these people should be broken. We were not lies. Then we were told by these people, you can go and do whatever you like. You can go to the police or to the courts.
Thereafter both of us who took the children talked among ourselves and we went to the police. And we went and took steps according to the law. Then the Inspector who was there said, “Mother, I too have children and I will take the necessary steps regarding this”. He presented the case to the court. The case was presented to the Magistrate court. We have been to the court now three or four times. On their side they bring five, six proctors to talk on behalf of the monk. We don’t have money to have lawyers. If we did not have a place like this office to come and complain, we don’t have any place. I am an old person. I have a great difficulty in bringing up this child. He does not have his mother. We are very poor humble people. If we don’t get some help even from an office like this one, where can we go?

They are saying that they are going to take away the child. I never thought something like this will happen to us. We always worship the yellow robes of the monks. That is the robe of Buddha. We respect the yellow robe. If not for that, we would not be patient like this. We cannot tolerate this. Even now they are throwing stones at our houses. We don’t know who are throwing stones. Then some people who are the parents of the monk came and told us save their son. I felt sorry and I went and told the lady who is handling the case from the probation department. I did that because of the respect of the yellow robe(Sivura). After that, somebody called the younger brother of the monk came from Galle. They said that they have four brothers. Then I told them also as much as they care for their brother, we also are caring for this little child of ours. These children who are studying are young, and they are of value to us.

The “Mig Deal” is probably the least corrupt of all arms deals. Its unfortunate this one is being given undue attention. It was a govt-to-govt deal without any middlemen as I can remember.
Its only when the “middle man” appears the issue of corruption arises because of the commissions it involves. Most middle men gets away with it probably because the commission classed as a legal transaction. There is no under the table transaction involved.
What is said to be happening is however, there are chains of middle men each charging a commission and passing onto the next without doing anything. That is how the corrupt make money.
One of the biggest crooks was a Naval officer I think his was called Anandasagara or something along those lines.
What is needed is a Freedom of Information (FOI) policy. India has one. Sri Lanka needs one very badly.

If you read the other article by Rajiva Wijesinha, who worked closely with the Rajapaksas, Gotabhaya wants impunity for the killers of the Trinco-5 youths.
Wijesinha limits his focus to that Trinco incident, trying still to cover up for the regime and make out MR as a good cop to GR’s bad cop, but the Trinco incident is just one out of too many such atrocities, and the buck stops with MR as the commander in chief. So both MR and GR have to answer a lot. There is plenty of evidence in the murders and mass graves for all to see, and command responsibility falls on them. No “substantiation” is required.
Corruption has to be treated as a separate issue from war crimes and murders, and let people focus on the latter first; the corruption issue can be sorted out after that.

In short, I just want to die as a human and die doing my share towards humanity!
Instead of harping on the writer’s motives, I sure wish readers would comment on the contents of articles… We are faced with more pressing issues and I along with rest of the writers spend a lot of time trying to put together a piece for the betterment of the people and country. I seek no personal glory, nor I am an established writer or an academic. In replying to a comment above from a reader, having lived in the US, seeking asylum was never considered. If at all, it is Mr. Gotabhaya who would be needing asylum.
While I am not oblivious to the fact that I could be in a probable hit-list of the Defense Secretary, it is my fervent wish that my death, disappearance or bodily harm at the hands of his goons would be the catalyst for change this country so badly needs. Let it be also on record the fact that I have no other enemies other than possibly earning the ire of Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapakse.
It is 3.26 am in Colombo, and I believe it is about time Sri Lanka ‘wakes up’!
