Letter To Secretary Kerry On His Visit To Sri Lanka

By Thisuri Wanniarachchi

Thisuri Wanniarachchi

The Honorable John Kerry,

Secretary,

Department of State,

Washington, DC

Dear Sir,

Welcome to the Pearl of the Indian ocean. They used to call us the tear drop of the Indian Ocean, and rightly so, but we always preferred Pearl. Despite everything we’ve been through, we have always believed that a better day is possible. And today, we can say with much certainty that the better days are here and we are striving to sustain them. Your support in this time of transition is invaluable, and I believe, I speak for all the youth of our country when I thank you whole-heartedly.

As you may notice in the coming days, we Sri Lankans are a proud people. Although conflict has attempted to divide us, we have always united in our pride. We take pride in our paradise of an island: its turquoise beaches, golden sunsets, green hills and the good earth blessed by the foot prints of the Buddha. We take pride in our heritage of scholars, Ceylonese architecture, literature and our diverse faiths and languages. We also take pride in producing some of the world’s finest teas, spices and cricketers. Most of all, we take pride in our resilient, hardworking citizens who have been through so much, yet who stand strong and united in their fight for democracy.

Having been enslaved and colonized by multiple nations until we gained independence in 1948, then put through a brutal 30 year war just decades later, and then abandoned by an authoritarian regime at a time of great desperation and need for reconciliation, we have seen it all. Truth be told, my generation, like most children of war, have never had much trust in our adults. Their irresponsibility cost us our childhoods. We’ve seen things no child should have to see; fear was our bread and butter. To us, democracy has always been a distant dream.

The strides we’ve made as a nation in the past few months have been refreshing. It has restored our trust in the adults. I believe you can fathom how much this transition truly means to us. It gives us the hope that our children will never have to see what we’ve seen or feel what we’ve felt, a place no child deserves to be. Like most things in life, this transition is difficult, gradual, and sometimes frustrating, but we are getting there. Thank you for being with us, as you have with many other nations around the world as we make our way through the path to democracy.

Have a safe journey.

Yours truly,

Thisuri Wanniarachchi

A bright young person like you showing a concern for democracy and diversity augurs well for the political future of our country and I highly commend you for that. I’d also like to believe that you, being intelligent, use the words “the good earth blessed by the foot prints of the Buddha” in a metaphorical sense.

      1. I repeat Off The Wall:
”A bright young person like you showing a concern for democracy and diversity augurs well for the political future of our country”

      2. Thisuri, if only your generation had been told what happened in the decades between ”… independence in 1948” and ”… a brutal 30 year war decades later” you might have said something about what had been happening in the North and the East since the end of ”the brutal 30-yr war” up to the beginning of this year.

      3. I appeal to all Sinhalese to read the speech made by President Maithripala Sirisena at Valalai handing over a part of the HSZ on 23.03.2015. That speech shows the change of head and heart of the national leadership that must be known by all the citizens, esp those in the South. That will help your eneavours to reach the land of democracy. One way of dividing the communities in the past has been to suppress the news in one community from reaching the other communities.(readers, pl post here the weblink to the English, Tamil and Sinhalese versions of the speech – I went to hear him directly)

Because I firmly believe that ”A bright young person like you showing a concern for democracy and diversity augurs well for the political future of our country” I wish to give the following to benefit Thisuri’s generation to know what learned/conscientious Sinhalese told LLRC and which the previous govt didn’t want them to read and thus quickly took down their submissions by ”disappearing” LLRC website:

Kerry is in Sri Lanka to tell Sri lankans how to run our country at a time his own, the USA, is riddled with racism and their cops killing their minorities. The USA that kills more innocents globally than any other nation should focus on how to irradicate their own endemic home grown barbarism. Is there any doubt the fellow is in Sri Lanka for their geopolitical interests than human rights concerns?

Yep. Kerry is here to bake his own cake. Let us not kid ourselves. Checkmating Beijing among other things. Who knows.

It is of course handy, idiots who governed this country provided the required excuses (HR & accountability etc.) to get in here.

If any nation needs a “Domestic Accountability Mechanism” that would be USA. Where a large chunk of the population is in prison. Where prison are run for profits. Like everything else. Their true God.

          Cheers!

The Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute is the training ground for our future ambassadors to the world. Started twenty one years ago, its courses have rightly emphasized the importance of professional competence in our diplomatic corps – focussing on training in negotiations, public speaking, economic diplomacy and policy analysis. These are key tools that every diplomat aspires to perfect. It is with this in mind that I’d like to briefly outline some ideas on the theme “Sri Lanka at the cross-roads of the Asian Century” that could serve as an opportunity for you to exercise your newly acquired.

    Thisuri Wanniarachchi –

The Honorable John Kerry, Secretary, Department of State, Washington, DC.

Welcome to Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho occupied by the Paradeshis, Para-Sunhala, Para-Tamils, Para-Muslims, Para-Portuguese and many other Paras.

    The Vedda Tribe

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f89NuukY32U

As you may notice in the coming days, the Sri Lankans are a Para- people. The DNA in their bodies is Proof that they came illegally by boats from India, called Hora Oru and Kall Thoni, by the Para-sinhala and Para-Tamils.

The Para Sinhala and Para-Tamils having been enslaved and colonized by multiple European Para nations until the first set of Paras gained independence in 1948, then due to Para-Sinhala discrimination and abuse of fellow Para-Tamils by the Para-Sinhala based on Myths, especially Mahawansa, resulting in a brutal 30-year war just decades later, including ethnic cleansing, and then abandoned by an authoritarian regime at a time of great desperation and need for reconciliation, the Paras have seen it all.

Strides have been made as a civilized Para-Nation in the past few months, despite a large fraction of Para Fools and Idiots, have been refreshing. It has restored the trust in the adult Paras with Common Sense. In fact, the New Para-President was elected under the Banner of Common (Sense) Candidate . We believe you can fathom how much this transition truly means to the Paras. It give the Paras hope that Para children will never have to see what this generation of Paras have seen or feel what was felt, a place no child, Para and Non-Para alike, deserves to be. Like most things in life, this transition is difficult, gradual, and sometimes frustrating, but the Paras are getting there. Thank you for being with the Paras, as you have with many other nations around the world as we make our way through the path to democracy.

Have a safe journey to Lanka, the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

    Yours truly,

On Behalf of Native Veddah Aethho, The True Natives of the Land.

… and then abandoned by an authoritarian regime at a time of great desperation and need for reconciliation, we have seen it all. Truth be told, my generation…

As a Tamil, we will gladly join with liberal and decent Sinhalese like you to rebuild the shattered nation. But your problem is the BBSs Gnassara, Gunadasa Amarasekera, Dinesh G, Gammanpila types who would rather set the country aflame than give up their divisive and obstinate dreams of an island whose entire resources belong to one community.

…. forget to include racists and extremists like Rudrakumara, Wigs and other left over racist terrorists of Tamil origin or, was the list too long to mention?

        • 6

VP and company, Rudy and others were the inevitable response of prolonged and uncaring injustice encouraged by those I have listed. Tamils did not start it. They responded, unable to bear violence and injustice – for 3 decades and more. If its peace and reconciliation that is purposefully on the board in all sincerity, I am sure, the Tamil side will match it pound for pound.

Tamil community should take responsibilty for their brutal activitiesa towards the Sinhalese and sabotaging the economy. Suicide bomber murderers, Tamils who slaughtered pregnant women and babies, bombings of infrastructure will be remembered. Tamils have to take responsibility for their racism and barbarity.

The Tamil list may be a short one, however the Sinhala/Buddhist list of racist is endless.

Let me see, the list should definitely include Lal loo, Taraki, Banda, Sinhala Banda, mechanic, sach the stupid, …… Anagarika (homeless one) Dharmapala, ….. DS, JR, Sri Mao, MR, Gota, ….

Thisuri – You are a young writer and your efforts should be encouraged
and keep up the good work . CT is a journal where you can write fearlessly and there will be people to comment on your articles with good intentions to improve your input and you learn from it. It is a good start where you have spoken for all communities and you have also
talked about unity and peace but in the past, some journalists thrived on bringing disunity among the major communities, adopting a divide and rule policy and they thought that, that was good journalism.

Wish you luck with your journalism and try and maintain high standard
in your writings. Some articles in CT are sickening to read as authors
    wish to spread communalism.

    Dear Ms. Thisuri Wanniarachchi,

Thank you for your well-written post for a 21-year old and your attempts to transform into a civilized society.

“Despite everything we’ve been through, we have always believed that a better day is possible.”

I like this sentence. However, a lot of education and training is needed. You clearly belong to the Sri Lankans with Common Sense Group, with an average IQ of 93, The other Group is the Modaya, Mootal and Fool group with an average IQ of 65.

Writing the Sri Lankan Version of the Common Sense Pamphlet in Sinhala and Tamil is needed to educate the masses, just like Thomas Paine, did for the Americans in 1876. Can you recruit Native born Sri Lankan youngsters for that Project?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Sense_%28pamphlet%29

The results may be measured in the transformation of the Modaya, Mootal and Fools getting common sense. You may be able to quantify it by the measuring the Modaya, Mootal and Fools group IQ before and after.

    Dear Thisuri,

Your letter is so nice to read. One does hope that the new generation in Sri Lanka brings hope to the country and are not misled any more by the chauvinists who stir racial hatred while ensuring that they educate their own children abroad with wealth stolen from the people of the island. I wonder how many of these children so educated at the cost of cheating the rest belongs to your generation and would perpetuate the myths of their parents so that they could live in luxury while others fritter their lives in violence.

It is not your generation alone that saw what it should not have seen. My generation of Tamils were subjected to misery from 1956 when an Oxford educated Sinhalese (or was he really one?) saw in beating the communal drum as the way to power. The violence that resulted in 1958, during black July and later against the Tamils drove so many Tamils away from the country. As the pages of the CT show, many were to become distinguished academics, lawyers, doctors etc. abroad. This is a lost generation to Sri Lanka, people who were educated in Sri Lanka but served the rest of the world. The next generation of Tamils resorted to violence, probably due to desperation but nothing can justify their killings of innocent Sinhalese they engaged in, though their right to use violence against an unjust state is morally condonable. That phase and the phase of Sinhala triumphalism leading to a crude dictatorship is now over.

As you say, Thisuri, there is a new opportunity. But, there are still the forces of darkness out to strike the same old drums. One can only hope that the vigour of the new young can lead the island to a better future in which all can emerge into a state of true freedom.

Lovely piece of clear, sensible writing. Very well written. In a few words you have reflected what your generation has gone through. Thankfully, Sri Lanka is once again a peaceful and blessed country once again, compared to 5 months before and the trauma we Sri Lankans went through. We are proud of you. You have a very bright future. Good luck to you Thisuri.

“That pride is part of the national average IQ of 79.”

It is the Mootals, Modayas and Fools with average IQ of 65( Those voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa) who bring the IQ number to 79.

Without those Mootals, Modayas and Fools, the Average IQ of those with Common sense would be close to 93, not high as singapore, but better.

National IQ Scores – Country Rankings

      http://www.photius.com/rankings/national_iq_scores_country_ranks.html

      Sri Lanka 79

      Singapore 108

      Argentina and Bulgaria 93
( Sri Lanka, without the Mootals, Modayas and fools 93)
(Sri Lanka, the Mootals, Modayas and fools 65. They voted for Mahinda Rajapaksa.)

The intelligence scores came from work carried out earlier this decade by Richard Lynn, a British psychologist, and Tatu Vanhanen, a Finnish political scientist, who analysed IQ studies from 113 countries, and from subsequent work by Jelte Wicherts, a Dutch psychologist.

Thisuri W. and other young Sinhalese should look at the causes of violence option the Tamils took from 1970s.
Tamils have been mistreated by the majority race ever since British granted independence to Ceylon.
    Indian Tamils disenfranchised even though they had lived in Ceylon for many years;
Sinhalese made the Official Language instead of making all three Languages Official;( Like in Singapore)
India is a Secular Country—Why not Sri Lanka????
Why can not be the University admissions and Government jobs be based on Merit?
Did not the GoSL sponsor the 1958,1977 and 1983 riots against the Tamils?
Did not the GoSL bomb the No Fire Zone?
GoSL has killed and injured more civilians than the Natural Disasters
Why the Tea plantations workers living a pathetic life, even though they bring valuable foreign Exchange–Is it because they are Tamils???

From time immemorial it has always been that the present generation learns from the sins of the old and I am delighted that young Thisuri had recognised that. With the generation now at the helm, we should have great hopes for our country.

Thisuri. Your input here speaks on behalf of your generation. Young inquisitive and educated.
Your elders were kept in the dark by the crafty politicians not disclosing the truth from the Independence DAY IN 1948′

That generation was brain washed by the crafty politicians who believed in what was written on the propaganda media.
They were totally brain washed to believe the country belonged to the Buddhists only and the rest were aliens came by boats. The myths and lies made by these politicians since the Indendence destroyed the mindset of a whole generation.

The country thrived when the multi national community lived peacefully before all these crafty politicians brought Swabasha Medium.
The Buddhists commoner could not think of anything else other than HOW TO KILL THE OTHER COMMUNITIES.
THERE WAS FEAR PSYCHOSIS AND SUSPICIONS CREATED BY THESE CRAFTY POLITICIANS.
Your generation suffered in silence because you followed and believed THE elders.

With the new Dawn in horizon make ” hay while sun shines”. Now the world is open with all sorts of electronic devises ,all at finger tip.
Thisuri this is your opportunity for people with broadmindedness to build this country beyond anyone’s imagination.

Srilankans are an Educated lot minus the ones who still BRAINWASHED BY THE SO CALLED DICTATORS AND THE
    TAIL WAGGERS.

GOOD LUCK IN YOUR ENDEAVOUR IN CHANGING THE MINDSET OF THE. ID…..

Politicians are not yet clear in their thoughtspost-MS:

A few weeks ago Ranil said in the North that the North should be taught Buddhism. The following week he went to a Hindu temple in India and ”onated” sandalwood in his own weight! He isn’t even clear about Sustainable Development , leave alone religion!!
The author and her generation must prepare themselves to take the reigns of the govt.

Very well written. It appears to me that unlike anti US old DJ who claims he is a smart patriot, you are a real young Sri Lanka patriot studying in US. You don’t show any supremacy like DJ.

As far as I understand Gautama Buddha or his 10 main deciples never wrote the MAHAVAMSA.
Why then in Sri Lanka younger generation after younger generation ever since Mahanama Thero wrote that MAHAVAMSA, follow the MAHAVAMSA instead of Buddha’s teachings.

Tomorrow 3rd May is Vesak day and June 1st or 2nd is a Poson day. I expect a beautiful write up reflecting these 2 important days and giving the right messages to the younger generation of Sri Lankans and the major political parties since the general elections are around the corner.

I know Vasudeva’s daughter studied in the US but you are giving more reassurance to the majority of the suffering Sri Lankans regardless of religion or race with your liberal arts education.

What a wonderfully refreshing and welcome article this is. As Sri Lankans we are never slow to speak of our proverbial hospitality and friendliness but sadly in recent times it seems that we have become very selective of those to whom we extend a warm and cordial welcome. In particular, visitors from Western governments seem to have been looked upon with undue suspicion and reservation. So, it is especially good to see someone extending a warm and uninhibited welcome to the US Secretary of State. If we are to be true to what we profess we must demonstrate by our actions the ideals we espouse. John Kerry is no less a guest of Sri Lanka than was the Chinese President or the Pope, and should be welcomed with the same warmth with which we greeted those visitors.

I see that the writer is a young person. I wish I was still in her age group – not one who has grown weary and cynical having witnessed the manner in which our leaders, one after another, have let us down – and be able to look to the future with her youthful optimism and hope. It is to young people such as her that the future belongs and to whom we need to look upon to build a better country.

Thank you, Thisuri. Good luck, and keep up the good work.

Ms Wanniarachchi- A nice piece of writing, hope to see more from the contemporary writers like you as the destiny of the country is rest in your hands.

As you have rightly identified the adults of just past generation have had dropped the baton many a times ( if I can compare the productive years of live of a generation to a relay race)in SL, post independence. Hope the generation you represent will, not only make up the distance lost by your predecessors in your lap of race but would be able to passed it on to the next generation to come with a few noses up front so SL will be the wonders of SE Asia, if not world.

“The strides we’ve made as a nation in the past few months have been refreshing”- indeed it has been, the new president’s approach in handling things has been very promising and his acknowledgement that he is a servant of the people, not the king was a good starting point of his tenure as the head of the country and he has been lived up to that so far. Would others, the ministers, MPs, bureaucrats and technocrats follow suit and understand the very message he would like them taken into their heads. Hope they will, still a long way to go,
the recent incident removing the stripes representing the minorities from the national proves that.

    Thushari
Not sure why you decided to address this well written letter to Mr. Kerry, who very intentionally called the war against LTTE terrorists as being aginst Tamils, and not correcting that very incorrect position in spite of much contravesy.
Is he not from a country:
    – where White Police Officers routinely kill innocent Black people
    – talks of human rights but has countries like Saudi Arabia as key allies
    – talks of suppoting democracy, but supported the Egyptian army to overthrow the democratically elected government of Muslim Brotherhood
    – that was the last country to use organized slavary
    – that is the only country to use atomic bombs
    – that inwaded Iraq on false pretext of weapons of mass destruction and is responsible for the deaths of millions of innocent people there. Middle East has been completely destabilised by their interventions in Iraq, Libya, Syria, etc.
    – that has been championing resolutions against Sri Lanka at the human rights council, for standing upto them to finish the LTTE terrorism. Where would Sri Lanka be if we had listened to the so called Western Countries, who have domestic political compulsions, and stopped the war against the LTTE.
    – talks of human rights but uses different standards when it comes to Israel.
    – whose president recently cut short a much awaited visit to India, worlds largest democracy, to pay respects to the deceased king of Saudi Arabia where there is no semblance of democracy
    – the list can go on………….

Thushari, most of above has happened or is happening in your life time. Your letter if possibly addressed to the mothers and fathers of Sri Lanka it would have served greater purpose.

You have begged for the support from wrong people . Don’t you have your eyes widely opened ? . Where the USA and west kept feet on there is a conflict , if you have no knowledge about that , please think of what they have done to Middle East in the name of good governing last few years , which was named by the west as Arab spring , and what happened to those countries at the end , lawlessness , anarchism ,barbarism , therefore I totally disagree with your bold reference . If you want to give a credit to Kerry and Sirisena , you probably could have done it differently . However ,while I read your piece of article which concedes me that you are seriously lack of some awareness . You had suggested that democracy has arrived now and finally our hopes are beginning to grow , what nonsense it that ?? Are you seriously insane ?? I will remind you when we had lost democracy and Liberty in our door step You may not be aware about 18 years of UNP era , this period was the time we entirely lost freedom and democracy ,, oho what sad days we passed by ,you have no idea . People who lived in a country where the death was common occurrence and never slept comfortably . Although closed our weary eyes ,sleeping would not come because our our minds think of burning bodies of men and women side of the roads , we slept with great difficulty ,because fear even the winds. ,and people were woken up by sounds of gun fire coming from all directions on whole night and screeching brakes applied by speeding jeeps which came to a stop outside our door the sounds of heavy foot wear followed, In second we heard an order .
Can’t you remember ? 30 years of barbaric war ripped of our hearts , poor village man’s son or daughter went in war to defend the country who may come home in a coffin filled with trunk of banana tree.,can’t you remember , please if you not know about such era ask some one who have good concern about it . Then you will get a right picture without upset great people who put their lives to save your and mine future

    Young Lady,
When I read “we have always believed that a better day is possible”, I thought to myself, oh, that’s nice. And reading further I come across “have never had much trust in our adults” and I was starting to become hopeful that “better days” may be possible after all. And one small amendment to the constitution and you are ready to say “It has restored our trust in the adults”? Why, why, why… what… how…

Let me lay this out straight. President Sirisena did not win because the “Adults” suddenly grew a brain. They voted just like always, along party lines. If not for the stupid egos of Rajapaksas and racist fat pigs around him that compelled the minorities to vote against him you’d still be under the jackboot of the White Van psychopath. My point is… it is not the wisdom of the “Adults” but the stupidity of the Rajapaksas that you have still hopes for a “better day”; and there is a huge difference between the two.

As “children of war” you have only glimpsed what peace used to mean in Sri Lanka and you are yet to experience close bonds that existed among a trusting people and humanity in Sri Lankan society. I am sorry to say but the cut-throat culture of the deep South seems still engulf the whole nation. Hey, the saying about cats beyond Benthara River must have had a reason behind it, don’t you think?

Anyway, the point is, the country you have/will inherit is not out of the woods yet. It only takes those lethargic voters to decide it is not worth the time to pick their butts off the recliner chairs for the servile bunch to be told their king is ready for their services again.

So, just a piece of advice, young one; don’t break the champagne just yet.

Re: “As you may notice in the coming days, we Sri Lankans are a proud people”

I always thought that Sri lanka is famous for its ill treatment and violence against minorities!!
