Mahinda Is No One’s Baby-Sitter

It’s easy to offer advice after the fact. Mahinda Rajapaksa had many exit-options. He could have ruled in a way that he could go out, even in defeat, with head held high. He did not. And yet, he had enough popularity and even grudging respect from detractors, to go into quiet retirement, barring of course the possibility that ghosts of wrongs done might return to haunt him.

As the all-powerful executive president everything that happened during his rule either polished his status or took away the gloss. This is why he, more than anyone else, deserves the major share of the kudos for defeating the LTTE. It is also why he, more than anyone else including perpetrators, has to take responsibility for all the wrongdoings during his tenure.

If he wanted to make a come back, then (yes, it’s easy to say), he could he kept away from the circus. His backers needed him more than he needed them. Even in this election. They used him as pin-up boy in their campaign. They played him for a sucker. He got suckered.

Now had Mahinda opted for ‘quiet retirement’. Notwithstanding the antics of Wimal, Gammanpila et al Mahinda hadn’t lost too much ground in terms of popularity. He could have let the demand come to him. He was impatient or else absolutely off-mark in reading the political equation.

Mahinda WimalIt was a long shot anyway. The ruling party has an edge. Mahinda ought to have known that President Maithripala Sirisena could hardly afford to have him, Mahinda, as Prime Minister. He, Sirisena, could and did do much damage to the UPFA campaign. Sirisena played hard. He played dirty. Mahinda’s game during his Presidency was hardly clean and for this reason Mahinda should have expected Sirisena to do the dirty on him, even at great cost to the party.

Had he at least pledged absolute support to the leader of his party in word and deed things might have been different. He did not. That’s a flaw. Humility would have taken him to a different kind of political afterlife. He lacked it. He still lacks it.

As former President he knows the sway of the powers vested in that office, even with the clipping affected by the 19th Amendment. Sirisena’s machinations should have taught him something anyway. He should know, now, that his stock is diminishing at an alarming rate and can only continue to fall given the political circumstances he finds himself in.

There’s very little he can do in the coming years as Leader of the Opposition, especially in what would be a diminished UPFA after Sirisena (as indicated) drags the SLFP out of the coalition. If he has any doubts he should give Ranil Wickremesinghe a call. Ranil knows all about being the Opposition Leader.

Under these circumstances, it is imperative that he be told the obvious. Retire.

Mahinda Rajapaksa can make a good speech. He can make the speech he ought to have made on January 9. He can say that too. He can also point to the huge credibility gap between word and deed as per democracy, good governance, decency and civil conduct as far as Maithripala and Ranil are concerned. He can flag certain things that the people should be vigilant about. Whatever it is, the break should be clean.

He should not fool himself that he would be letting down the people who voted for him. He certainly won’t be letting down those who preyed on his popularity. The people will understand. They’ll find new leaders to articulate their concerns. Those who feel left out by the August 17 result could be given reason by the new government to reconsider their position. If not, they can look for ways of recovering relevance. He is no one’s babysitter. And if people think they are babies, then they need to grow up.

Mahinda Rajapaksa had his hour of glory. He will be remembered. There will be gratitude and there will be hatred. That’s a given anyway. He had his exit-moments. He has one right now. He can still go out with some dignity, less than he had of course, but enough to guarantee a decent retirement.

Malinda is close to MR et al. He ” nudges ” MR to leave, now, with whatever stock he has.
I am reminded of AKD’s statement, ” While Rajapaksa played checkers, Sirisena played Chess “.

Will he also be remembered for splitting the Nation, giving part of it to China, in H’tota and soon in Colombo ?

As for the War on the LTTE, that credit will be shared by the JHU who hand held him to go to war.

    Malinda,

Your masked sadness in imploring your great leader to leave with whatever dignity he is left with is palpable.

That is life Malinda. Unfortunately for you, you aligned yourself with a rogue. Those in the know know what you stood for. Sri Lanka expects better from journalists. It is never too late to correct your errant ways.

    Malinda,

Truth be told, you are not a writer I had any regard for, especially your lack of objective impartiality. But this is a very good piece! Give the devil his due.

So after all, you are capable of writing the truth, eh?

    Never would have guessed. :))))

I know quite a number of close associates and SLFP, long standing members tried their best to bring him to proper senses and put into the correct track to make him a REAL HERO. How many times even through web pages and comments, he was reminded of his own religious teaching: “ASEWANCHA BALANAG, PANDITHA NANCHA SEVANA” meaning Do not associate the lowly (vultures) but associate the intelligent and true friends. Did he listen? NO. His own FAMILY used and abused him. What more? Those FOURSOME (Wimal,Vasu,Dinesh,Gammanpila) started digging the “GRAVE” from Nugegoda and Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse simply walked over the covered pit and fell into it. Why? because of his own EGO driven mind set. By contesting in the Parliamentary election, he completed his DEMISE. Other than to say SORRY and again to advise him “ASEWANACHA BALANAG;PANDITHANANCHA SEVANA” for his own future good. However, a BIG THANK YOU for what you did in 2009, but do not excuse for what you did from 2010 to 2014.

To win a war, one has to be ruthless. Without being ruthless one would not be able to authorise operations where thousands of innocents would be killed, maimed or orphaned. One also has to be ruthless to care less about one’s own army’s casualties. Rajapakse had all this, whereas none of the previous leaders had the stomach for such ruthlessness. Perhaps Premadasa might have had it in him. But certainly no other leader from D S Senanayake downward would have made the mark.

Is Rajapakse great because of this? It depends on the humanity of the observer. To many Sinhalese Buddhists, Rajapakse is a hero – greatest hero after Dutugamunu! At least there are four million voters who think so. And that shows the “humanity” of these adherents of that most compassionate religion – Buddhism.

If 2300 years of Buddha Dhamma in Sri Lanka can produce a population who would countenance such violence, such callousness towards human misery, it is one of the most potent indictment of the irrelevance of the thousands upon thousands of saffron clad monks, temples, stupas, and Bo-trees people venerate daily.

This is not to say that LTTE, Tigers and Prabhakaran should have had a free run. No. With intelligence and humanity combined, a civilised people should have been able to find other means to subdue these terrorists. At the very least, with less violence.

In my book, Rajapakse is no hero.

Malinda Seneviratne, Mahinda Rajapaksa Shill and white washer

RE: Mahinda Is No One’s Baby-Sitter

“It’s easy to offer advice after the fact. Mahinda Rajapaksa had many exit-options. “

Mahinda Rajapaksa should have taken the retirement option and taken to fishing in the Indian Ocean.

Now he is being sucked deeper and deeper into a sink hole, thanks to his Shills, White-Washers and Cronies.

Malinda, you shills are doing a great disservice for your boss, MaRa and the country. You shills are sending Mara up a “Murunga” tree*, based on the nutritinal value of the fruit or vegetable, for MaRa to fall down. Murunga in Sinhala, Drumstick Tree in English, Murungai in Tamil.

    MaRa Mara Chatu MaRa
    MaRa MaRa Amana Mara
    MaRa MaRa HoRa MaRa
    MaRa MaRa Dhushana MaRa

“Murunga” tree* Miracle tree in Asia

    http://www.sundaytimes.lk/110213/Plus/plus_14.html

With experts warning of a global food crisis in the future, could the Drumstick Tree, found in Asia, be an answer? Here Managing Director of Bibile Plantations Shrinath Perera discusses its nutritional value
Packed with nutrition: Studies have shown that Moringa leaves contain seven times the Vitamin C of oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, four times the calcium of milk three times the potassium of the bananas, three time the iron of spinach, three times the vitamin E of almonds and twice the protein of milk. Basically this shows no other plant source or food stuff can beat Moringa.

Moringa Oleifera commonly referred to as Murunga in Sinhala, Drumstick Tree in English, Murungai in Tamil, is known in over 82 countries and by over 200 different names. Perhaps it is the tree in the Garden of Eden referred to in the Bible called the Miracle Tree. The Moringa was highly valued by the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians as early as 2000 B.C. for its medicinal properties. Some ancient writings on it date back to 150A.C.

A perennial small shrub or tree that can reach 12m (36ft) in height at maturity, it can live up to 20 years. It is the fastest-growing of all trees as it can reach 3m(9ft) in just 10 months after the seed is planted. It has deep roots (therefore it can survive in dry regions) and a wide-open crown with a single stem. It thrives well in high temperatures and more sunlight.

The immature green pods called “drumsticks” are probably the most valued and widely used part of the tree. They are commonly consumed in Sri Lanka and India, generally prepared like green beans and have a slight asparagus taste. The seeds are sometimes removed from more mature pods and eaten like peas or roasted like nuts. The flowers are edible when cooked, and are said to taste like mushrooms.

The leaves are highly nutritious, being a significant source of beta-carotene, Vitamin C protein and potassium. The leaves are cooked and used like spinach, salad, greens, pickles, seasonings and in vegetable curries. Also leaves are commonly dried and crushed into powder, and used in soups and sauces. This dried powder can be stored for many months without refrigeration, and reportedly without loss of nutritional value.

Moringa leaves and pods are helpful in increasing breast milk in nursing mothers. One tablespoon of leaf powder provides 14% of the protein, 40% of the calcium, 23% of the iron and most of the Vitamin A needs of a child aged one to three. Six tablespoons of leaf powder will provide nearly all of a woman’s daily iron and calcium needs during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Moringa capsules, juice and Moringa tea and energy drink are manufactured from 100% pure Moringa leaves. These products are gaining popularity because of the fact that it is nutritious and 100% natural.

According to Ayurveda, about 300 diseases can be cured with the help of various parts of this tree. In traditional Indian medicine, children and adults used to drink a cup of decoction (kasayam) every Sunday, normally after a bath, made of ginger, garlic and a piece of Murungai tree bark ( Murungai pattai in Tamil) . The Moringa leaves are believed to have a stabilizing effect on blood pressure and control glucose levels. They are also used to treat anxiety, diarrhoea and inflammation of the colon, skin infections, scurvy, intestinal parasites, venomous bites and many other conditions.

Studies have examined certain compounds of the plant for their cancer prevention potential. Recently two of these compounds were shown to be potent inhibitors of activation of lymphoblastoid (Burkitt’s lymphoma) cells. One of these compounds also inhibited tumours in mice bred to be prone to tumours. Another study, examined skin tumour prevention following ingestion of drumstick seedpod extracts.

In this mouse model, which included appropriate positive and negative controls, a dramatic reduction in skin tumours was demonstrated. More rigorous study is required in order to achieve a level of proof required for full medical endorsement of Moringa as, in this case, a cancer preventative plant.

Also research done in Johns Hopkins school of Medicine and Cuilmun Cancer Chemo Protection Center, Maryland USA observed that Moringa contains Hypertensive anticancer, and antibacterial activity including for benzyl isothiocyanate, 4- isothiocyanate, niazimicin, benzyl isothiocyanate and benzyl glucosinolate. These compounds are relatively unique to the Moringa family.

Moringa seeds yield 38 – 40% edible oil called Ben oil – there is a high concentration of behenic acid contained in the oil. The refined oil is clear, odourless and resists rancidity at least as well as any other botanical oil. The nutritional value of the oil is very similar to olive oil. The seed cake remaining after oil extraction may be used as a fertilizer or as a flocculent to purify drinking water. The seed cake remaining contains the active components for removing turbidity (solid particles) from water. Because bacteria adhere to the solids, this seed-cake also effectively removes bacteria. This is one of the best ways to clean water and cheaper than mechanical methods. Two researchers from University of Leicester, England show Moringa oleifera as effective as Aluminum sulphate (alum) for water treatment in removing suspended solids from turbid water. Moringa oil has a potential to become a useful source of fuel both industrial as well as domestic in the years to come. The seeds are also considered an excellent source for making biodiesel.

India is the largest producer of Moringa, with an annual production of 1.3 million tons of tender fruits. Moringa is also actively cultivated in Taiwan to reduce poverty and malnutrition in developing countries through improved production and consumption of vegetables. In south India, pods are used to prepare a variety of sambar dishes. In other parts of India especially in west Bengal and in Bangladesh, it is made into a variety of curry dishes by mixing with coconut, poppy seeds and mustard or boiling until the drumstick is semi-soft and consumed directly without any extra processing or cooking
In Sri Lanka dry zone areas like Kalpitiya, Jaffna, Monaragala, and Mahiyanganaya are the main areas where Murunga is commonly available. This local variety bears fruit twice a year and prices vary between Rs. 50-100 dependending on the supply available in the market.

Ah, how sweetly doth sing, pretty Malinda….. now that the fair winds of change are being felt as they swirl strong and true under your sarong.

Methinks this is sage advice from a lapdog and a sycophant to one who once was king, but who chose to govern like a village thug, plundering all in sight and tearing asunder the hopes and aspirations of the people of this fair isle who hoped so hard that he would live up to his words he spoke so eloquently on the 19th of May 2009.

True he is no baby sitter for anyone, and one suspects that he gave his all at this last shot only to keep his (and his ‘kalliya-s’ heads above water and to defy prosecution…… there is no one better to articulate this in sweet prose than the lead characters of Sri Lanka’s premier music group, so here is a skit that I am sure Malinda will enjoy watching as he fathoms a course of action to finally drop his smarmy brown-nosing of the common thug who was once king and tries to switch allegiances to the yahapalanaya brigade so he can continue to ply his puerile journalism and hope to win influence with the new rulers…….

It is good he retire . The gift he given me for 27 dedicated service in Government by ruining my family breaking all the personal relations I had cordially destroying my reputation, putting end to my professional life all were duty performing my duties right where all others did what superior said blindly.Today I am considered as the man woman in this society.

My all communication paths have been blocked. You could retire peacefully after doing all the blunders in this country since you are powerful you have people around you you have a huge wealth.

After doing a great service to this country i was expelled this society depriving me of especially all the intangible assets i had since I did not accumulate wealth professional image . i only loved people.

I am an widow with no support. I urged help for years. Today I know not only you the mentality of almost all people in this country is only people having some sort of power should live only they feel pain only they deserve comforts. There is no need to have concern about even basic needs of people having least power however much they are capable whatever the contribution they give to this country.

I stating with responsibility through my first hand experience above concept has become the part of our culture today.

It is unfortunate that most Sri Lankans do not want to retire when they reach the pinnacle of their careers and subsequently damage their reputation.

Most politicians want to extend their careers with drastic consequences. Others mostly get involved in politics after their distinguished careers and ruin their reputation. Classic examples in addition to Mahinda Rajapaksa are General Fonseka, Sanath Jayasuriya, Arjuna Ranatunga etc.

Some of those retired on the pinnacle are Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, Steve Waugh, Ronald Regan, JRJ and DB Wijetunga. Lets hope that President Sirisena will follow suit.

I know of no other President in the world who after defeat contested to be an member of Parliament.

Sri Lankan politicians of this this Ranil-Sirisena-Jarapassa generation are shameless. They want to monopolized power and never hand over to the next generation or next best person.

Civil society need to find and exit Strategy for this generation of corrupt politicians if we want a new political culture in Sri Lanka.

This means that the political parties which have the dregs of society need to be reformed and cleaned up. There needs to be a Chapter on reform of Political Parties ad Good governance in political parties in the new constitution, including term limits on party leadership and committee posts.

    The new constitution

Some one said , ” one thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning”.

So Percy Mahinda had two thorns , one on 8th Jan and the other on 18th August.
Maithiri wrote a letter to Mahinda before election and prompted him to retire gracefully as a state man. It did not happen because of MaRa supporters like DJ and you. EC put orders not to re-publish that letter until the polling is over.

You have freedom now, so pkese publish that in your news paper Malinda.

So now you are abandoning MaRa and reminding him about his rugged ancestry. You are saying to him ” Mahinda you came from pioneer stock, developers of the South, people who went out into wilderness and set up home with nothing but a pair of Oxen or Bufollos or Oxen.

A confession on behalf of his Lord and Master, almost acceptable but for the fact it leaves out the motivation and modus operandi for the devilish acts of the last ten years.

Tell your Master to confess that the motivation for all his criminality was the obsession to amass wealth for himself and his family. Hosannas to Rata, jathiya, agama, were just a ruse.

Tell your Master to confess that the method he used was to kill those who stood in the way, and if that was not possible, to buy them off with the People’s money.

Tell your Master, he can seek reduction of his punishment, by tendering an unconditional apology to the People of Sri Lanka, followed by full restitution by way of handing over to the national treasury all of his and his family’s loot, including bangalows, gold, jewellery, his and his family businesses held camouflaged by proxies, funds stashed away in offshore accounts.

Tell your Master, comply unconditionally, or face the full brunt of the law, including the possibility of deportation to the Hague.
