Mainstreaming Of Hate (Thanks) To Racist Ghosts: A Recipe For Disaster For Sri Lanka!

By Mohamed Harees –

Lukman Harees

Listening to a recent venomous speech by the hate monk Ven Ratana mouthing many inaccuracies and canards about everything Muslim, it needs no rocket science to predict the nearing of an explosion of a social volcano and an impending disaster, in the likes of Aluthgama or Digana. Ever since the Easter Sunday, unbecoming of the very rob he dons, he has been on a mission to demonise the Muslim community from leading the anti-Dr Shafi tirade as well as going around the country to propagate bigotry and animosity, without fear or sanction from the law enforcement authorities.. His partner in crime Ven Gnanasara made a similar  extremely demonising speech after a minor incident in Aluthgama, which led to the disastrous anti Muslim violence in Aluthgama in 2014. Amidst ‘professional jealousies’, ironically, both have now come together politically once again , to propagate their evil racist designs in the guise of ‘saving’ the Sinhala race and Buddhism. What tenets of Buddhism allows them to do so is anyone’s guess!

But then in Sri Lanka, although according to the Constitution all are equal; it is well known that some are more equal than others, unfortunately. The law enforcement authorities seems disinterested either when those connected to the ruling clique or those who can swing the public mood to their favour such as some rogue but influential sections of the Maha Sangha, are involved. Racism as a political tool appears to work at least in winning elections in Sri Lanka, going by its Post-Independence history.

In an ever-changing, incomprehensible world, the masses had reached the point where they would, at the same time, believe everything and nothing, think that everything was possible and that nothing was true… Mass propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.

The darker side of human nature still troubles us, though nowadays we tend to seek more naturalistic explanations. This was never more true than after the second world war, which offered an unflinching and deeply distressing view of the depravity to which humans can sink. One influential product of the research – or perhaps soul-searching – that followed was the concept of the “banality of evil”. Coined by political theorist Hannah Arendt after watching the 1961 trial of Nazi SS officer Adolf Eichmann, this spare phrase captures the idea that evil acts are not necessarily perpetrated by evil people. Instead, they can simply be the result of bureaucrats dutifully obeying orders. Eichmann was not only obeying the laws of the land, he was also doing what appeared lawful then and righteous for himself and for his family. It was this inability to think beyond orders and directives that led to the mass genocide of people which led her to coin the term. Yet the term can be slightly amended to read as the ‘banality of hatred‘ which underlies evil and it seems to fit the open bigotry which some show to others just because they are different.

It was this inability to think beyond orders and directives that led to the mass genocide of people which led her to coin the term. The epitome of Arendt’s idea of banality of evil [is] the state of thoughtlessness. It means that the individual becomes indifferent enough to himself as human being and to his fellow people [that he can] take part in any wickedness that functionality, or ideologies of his group of interests or belonging can produce. With the enormous power wielded by those in saffron clothes within the Sri Lankan polity, their harsh words carrying racist venom can turn ordinary peace loving people into hate mobs and raging armies. Unless those who calls the shots in Sri Lanka realize the dynamics of “this danger game” for political gains, the nation will never be able to counteract the powerful forces that can transform ordinary people into evil perpetrators.”

We see that all around us—for instance, in genocides on different scales in Rwanda, Bosnia, Iraq, and in Syria, done by people who are locked in ideologies and racism, which become their legitimate, normal, and victorious world. They will usually be demonized by other [people], also penetrated by counter-racism and ideologies, that wishes as well to distance itself from any thinking, understanding, and responsibility for the world we create together. [But] demonization is evil itself: By demonization one can also easily and logically justify expulsion, building walls, transfer, nullifying masses of people, libel them, etc.

It can be recalled that the Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya (MD), in March 2018 in a speech referred to the mainstreaming of Muslim hate among Sinhala people, on the heels of  the communal attacks on Muslims in Digana.(Daily Mirror of 20th March 2018 carried a rather alarming and distressing news-item on its’ front page). MD also reportedly added that a majority of Sinhalese were happy to see the Tamils too being attacked in 1983, only to regret it a few years later, thus demonising the Sinhala people. It may well have been media sensationalising to say the least or being misquoted or even expressing his personal view. However, in the overall context, viewed in retrospect, two years after the disastrous Easter attacks in 2019, MD’s statement raises an all-important question in the minds of all Sri Lankans; not just the Muslims: Has anti-Muslim hate gone mainstream in this Dharma Dweepa?

These anti-Muslim hate campaigns are all well- planned borrowing from global Islamophobia hell-bent on making Sri Lanka a hell-hole for the Muslims for various socio-political reasons. Indi Samarajiva wrote in ‘Medium’ blog that as long as the core ingredients of (some) excuses (or ruses) +racists+ people standing by, are there, another race riot (against the Muslims in this instance) cannot be prevented.

It was unfortunate that Sri Lanka has become a tinder box of sectarian and ethnic tensions. In fact, in the backdrop of the country’s pogrom-filled history, and in the context of a difficult transition from war to peace in 2009, the resurgence of ethno-nationalism and identity politics produced fresh tensions and fault lines. Islamophobia has already fostered an environment which led to violent attacks on the Muslims with impunity. Anti-Muslim hate has been on the rise, and came to the forefront of Sri Lankan politics after a series of suicide attacks on Easter Sunday in 2019, by a fringe radical Muslim group, which became a game changer for Muslims in Sri Lanka. The well-orchestrated yet subtle Islamophobia machinery began to work overtime vindicating anti-Muslim bigotry, demonising the entire Muslim community, which continues to date. Amidst the Corona pandemic, we are seeing the same machinery do its work again.

Racist hatred and intolerance in multicultural society like Sri Lanka is not novel. Nonetheless, it has real effects on Muslims’ lives creating a climate of fear and insecurity with hate incidents and hate speeches having risen to an all-time high in the Post-Easter period. There have been reports of Sri Lankan Muslims afraid to display religious markers in the public sphere, specially the Muslim women. Minority representation in government has dipped to all-time low as well. The two Task Forces appointed by the HE the President recently were sans minority representatives which is a dangerous precedent. Routine portrayals of Islam as a religion of hatred, violence and inherent intolerance in some sections of the media have become key planks for the emergence of extremist nationalist, anti-Muslim politics in the Island – planks which seek to exploit populist fears and which bears the potential to lead to Muslim disempowerment in the country.

It is a fact of history that the Muslim community in Sri Lanka has been making in the past and continuing to make important contributions to the local communities and broader Sri Lankan society in which they live. Yet for the last decade, the community, and Islam more broadly, are often the subject of misunderstanding and vilification, based on personal crimes and the vile acts of fringe groups. While such portrayals are unjust and empirically untrue, they still appear to academically, politically and popularly inform perceptions of Islam in Sri Lanka. This insidious phenomenon runs the very real risk of driving deep divisions through local communities, and of alienating friends, neighbours and political partners.

On the other hand, the Muslims should also look inwards and rectify areas which are reported to be causing annoyance or raising fears among other communities as they feel that present day Muslims are alienating themselves from the mainstream society due to their changed lifestyles being more Arab rather than indigenous. The issue of religious extremist groups though fringe,  is prevalent among the community and sooner they address it, the better for building more amicable relationships with the other communities. Therefore fighting hate in society should be the joint responsibility of all communities to prevent  hate going mainstream. Let the hate mongers be assigned to the fringes. Regardless of party affiliations or where they emerge from, racist rhetoric is unacceptable. Not only are such negative stereotypes harmful, they are wrong too. Impunity for racist crimes should stop for Sri Lanka to improve its shattered international image.

More than ten years after the war ended in 2009, it is clear that Sri Lanka remains in a state of conflict. This is the time for national reckoning. We need to rise above the narrow nationalistic and extremist positions held by all ethnic and religious groups, and build a peace premised on justice and equality for all. We have to look inwardly and all of us must find release from the cyclical force of racism and hate and tackle this period of chaos, with a sense of maturity without falling prey to the political opportunists in both sides of the divide.

As oft repeated, hate speech is however but a symptom, the external manifestation of something much more profound which is intolerance and bigotry. Therefore, legal responses, such as restrictions on freedom of expression alone, are far from sufficient to bring about real changes in mind-sets, perceptions and discourse. To tackle the root causes of intolerance, a much broader set of policy measures are necessary, for example in the areas of intercultural dialogue or education for tolerance and diversity. In addition, this set of policy measures should include strengthening freedom of expression’. This should attract the attention of our policy makers, religious leaders, intellectuals to work out a comprehensive program of action to make Sri Lanka a country where all communities can live in peace and harmony.

Racism is the fastest selling commodity among all 3 ethnic groups. Sad reality.

Racism is the easiest to twist the average mind set.

They the average in the country would not raise the question twice but can easily be tamed for a free rice packet/a glass of arak/or a condom packet.

Not long ago, we were compelled to see, how those uneducated masses marched to colombo showing their stupidities and left their excreta fallen in the down, so that colombo MC workers became helpless according to the reports.

Who was the master mind of those protests – None other than Mahinda Rajakashe and his CHILLI powder throwing/soil digging/drug trafficking/henchmen. But the publicity was bought by those two laundery media owners – public secret … but nothing workes against them. This is a good old srilanka where lawyers let their services be manipulated… best example is that DEALDASA et all with so called two doctorates bugger seem to be the most abusive man in srilanken law and order as of now. The kind of men were appointed as MINISTER of JUSTICE…. can you imagine… all these says almost everything about the appalling levels of law and order in that country.

      GATAM,
Yes it is the fastest selling commodity among all ethnic groups but state racism exceeds its limits and destroy the stability, peace, economy, and rule of law of this nation over 7 decades.

At some point Srilanka must seriously look into the option of splitting the island into 3 mono-ethnic nations for a permanent, peaceful, sustainable and respectable solution. Until then racism is king.

    • 5
      3

Three mono ethnic? There have been only two nations and ethnic groups in the island from ancient times . The Sinhalese and the Eelam Tamils. The history of the island is only about these two people and no one else. All the kingdoms. chiefdoms and rulers of the island came from these two people. There is no ethnic group called Muslims or known as Sri Lankan Moors as the love to call themselves. It is a religious identity and nothing more. They are no Moors or Arabs but recent immigrants from South India , largely descended from low caste converted Dravidian Tamil Hindus and the vast majority of them only arrived from South India during the British rule , especially the ones living in the Sinhalese South, The ones in the north and east are refugees who originally fled HIndu persection in their South Indian homeland and then Portuguese persecution along the then Tamil North West coast. Now having got radicalized and Arabised trying claim an artificial ethnicity based on a fake Arab origin, that they hardly have and their religion , which by the way is not unique or distinct to them , to be classified as a separate identity but a world religion practiced by more than 1.6 billion people belonging to many races and ethnicities.

Strange more than 70% of the island’s Muslims live in the Sinhalese south but there is no clamour for Islamic homelands in Muslim majority areas or ghettoes in the Sinhalese south as they fully aware of what the result will be and keep mum , however despite sharing a common ancestry , origin , language and heritage with the Tamils of the north and east , only Islamic homelands are claimed in and are also encouraged to be claimed in these areas on the basis of this fake Arab identity and religion , as they feel they can get away with it and the authorities to deliberately to muddy the waters and looking for any excuse not to grant just Tamil rights and self rule in their areas encourage these Islamic extremists and opportunists

    Dear Lukman Mohamed Harees,
    .
Thanks. Many inspired articles tell us what we should do. On Tuesday, I decided that I should seriously set about identifying the three people whom I will vote for in my effort to save our civilised way of life. I had been given a telephone number of a guy who was contesting in my district, and so I rang him early morning. This guy:

    .
That clip is only two minutes in English. I knew that he was contesting in my District. Name: Maithri something. He said he was on his way to my town to address a propaganda meeting. So along I went. He did not use any English at all. His Sinhalese was excellent, but after speaking about five sentences in the language, he switiched over to another language that I didn’t understand. I realised that it was Tamil, and I was amazed to see that he spoke it with equal fluency. To me it seemed that he was absolutely, and utterly sincere. I was told that his father is still around and that he, too, had been a most interesting guy. We just have to unearth candidates of this sort.

How much they have achieved during last 8 months. Gota Sir has not achieved anything. Now with few more hundreds of COVID patients are noticed, the weeks ahead of us will be difficult to th enation. I asked my friends to be away from using their votes to anyone. If I were there, I would vote for JVP and SPremadasa.

        .
I listened to all that, but only a bit of Champika.
        .
I’ve got to focus on my District. I’ll be glad to see the JVP organising itself well, but it just isn’t happening here.
        .
For Sajith P. personally, I don’t care much, but some of these others seem to be good. My mind is made up on major decisions, but fine-tuning is very necessary.
        .
BTW, I think that it is true that you shouldn’t unnecessarily or often use “ugly” words. But you’re very different from rj1952. He respects nothing. He’s probably frustrated in Australia. I have two sisters in Australia – doing well and not trying to comment on what happens here.

          Dear Mr SM,

you know that I really respect you or the like professionals. I cant imagine this platform or other websites without you the kind of gentle sorta of commenters. That is why I pray for you and your family on and on. I also discuss about you the kind of retired professionals with our friends in the vicinity. Srilanka would have been a great place – if senior retired professionals would break the silence and join you in the process of improvement public awareness about the danger before the nation today. You guys are caught by media mafia within the country. No dissident thought bearers are given equal oppotunities to express themselves.

And I am very sorry for that I used sometimes derogatory terms whenever refering to Rajapkashes or their henchmen and their unethical acts, but I dont use them to the manner RJ52 continues. So your comparison is no right I would say. Anyways, I will take good care of not adding them very often. Whenever I read that Mahinda Rajapakshe repeating ” blatant lies” manipulating the very same easy targets, any one with some sanity would go nervous asking as to why such a man in mid 70ties goes on lying. The fact is that he is the GOD FATHER of srilanken problems that the majority of people down there face today. Did his criminal forces allow former govt to do their job ? NO:.. MaRa et al had always been violent against former GOVT which brought lot more good to the nation within the first year of their tenur

I do have relatives scattered almost in every continent on this planet. But you dont necessarily add them on this page. I think you are truely a gentle sort of person who expose about you lot more on and on. I dont think any other commenters would do the same. I stay behind my PSEUDO name, because Rajapakshes are unpredictable. I dont need any further proof from anyone about their. My elders warned me that Beliatta rascals are even worst than some northern rebells.-

Please take good care of you Mr SM, with the numbers of new COVID cases are on a rise in SL… for the last few days alone it is reported more than 350 to be infected. … please dont take risk not wearing the masks as asked you to do so. Here in europe, we dont have choice but to respect the laws. It is becoming a punishable act if anyone would violate COVID related regulations.

As to the Rajapuka’s the whole wide world how nasty they are and that they are reeking with petty Klu Klux racism in every bone of their bones.
Have you forgotten how Mahindan Rajapuk’s became the victor by 148,000 votes at the 2004 presidential poll after bribing Velu Anna.?
Then he used unconventional weapons to defeat the LTTE and the Tamil cause.?

However, I did venture to say, on Colombo Telegraph, before the Presidential Elections last year, that I would definitely cast a First Preference for a Candidate of his sort, if he was contesting. He wasn’t, but there were 35 other disappointing candidates who contested.

He held the audience spellbound; I think that it was his sincerity that impressed us all.

      Kuviyam,

They are not buddhists. They are just BUDDHAGAMA followers. Almost everyone are born in to the religion. Buddhism I studied is far from Buddhgama that is being practised in the country today.

Not many countries that practise the religion respect the true teachings of the budda.

Alone child ordination is no longer acceptable, It is more or less like little ones are voluntarily offered to paedophiles.

I ll bet you , if anyone would go for an survey on the little ones live in srilanken temples as SAMANERA monks, 90% of the outcome would be them to have been molested by their older monks. But those families that offered their little ones to the temples are fed with a myth – that they would be collected unestimable amount of merit. Latter is an another blatant lie similar to that we the sinhaalayas are coming from Lion/hybrid.

Could you let us have evidence?
For your paranoid mind anything and everything cause you phobia and make you paranoid schizophrenia.

      Here are some facts:
Schizophrenia is a mental illness that affects the way you think.
Schizophrenia may develop during early adulthood.
You can have ‘positive’ and ‘negative’ symptoms of schizophrenia.
Positive symptoms are experiencing things that are not real
(hallucinations) and having unusual beliefs (delusions).
Hallucinations – 2500 Civilisation, this is a Sinhala/Buddhist country, Gota won the war, …..
Delusions – every Tom, Dick, Harry, Muslim, Tamil, Hindian, …. is after you, …

      List of symptoms:
      ….
      ….
      poor grooming or hygiene
changes in body language and emotions
      less interest in social activities
      low sex drive.

What has Muhammad’s expeditions 1400 years ago and 1000 of yojanas away from this island got to do with your paranoia?
You should be worrying about Dutta Gamani’s expedition from South to Anuradhapura, Chola Pandya’s frequent fishing visit to this island, …. several European business travel to this island, Hindian to flex their muscles, Chinese dollar brokers, MCC, ……………….

Aren’t you being hypocritical about Islam, Mohamed, …………. you find Islam offensive while this island keeps sending its women folks to Mohamed’s land to be treated as if they are slaves, some of them are being returned in coffins tattooed in nails, …. Any self respecting Sinhala person or Buddhist would not tolerate such treatment except the shameless Sinhala/Buddhist people like you. You must be extraordinarily tolerant to bear the pains of how badly women folks are being treated in Medieval Kingdoms, perhaps you enjoy listening to their suffering, sadists of course.

What is wrong with you lot?

Population explosion – a sudden, large increase in the size of a population.

Could you show us from all your census information which year the Muslim population exploded, by how many, as our Uncle SAM describes?

I also want to be remembered as a Sinhalese who fought for a separate Homeland for Tamils. He was unsuccessful as majority of Tamils won’t budge as they love to live in Sinhala majority areas a fact which made him immensely proud as a Sinhalese. He was hated by Tamil racist donkeys as he considered Tamils as ‘All Tamil speaking people scattered across the island irrespective of their religion, caste or the date of arrival’ and the thought of living in a Tamil only Homeland terrified them. They knew better than him that this Homeland is going to be a hell hole comprising 50% of low castes controlled by Vellalars and the other 50% of bearded robes with their ‘goni billa’ women controlled by Wahabis.

Muslims are sharing their part in the destruction of Lankawe’s economy and political landscape. The only Non -Muslim ministers government was formed in Lankawe was when 22 MPs and Ministers altogether left the Yahapalanaya government to block the investigation on Rishard. Fearing of the consequences, even Kandy Ayatollahs’ tried negotiating with Hakeem and Rishard. But they did not give an iota until the disaster struck, i.e. 7 M Sinhalese joined to stop minorities joining and king making. Muslim Ministers tested Sinhalese until this turn took place. They practically held hostages the plane load of parliament’s Sinhala MPs in every decision that affected the country. They threatened to let Tamils Blood River to flow, if Yahapalanaya government change the constitution, merging North East and form a Federal government. They opposed MMC. They opposed changing MMDA. EU’s GSP+ was hanging on MMDA reform. Hezbollah even made OIC to issue threat to impose Sanctions against Yahapalanaya government that if Hezbollah was investigated. They cooperated with Sinhala MPs only on one issue that is in humiliating Tamils like in Citizenship act, Sinhala Only Act, Standardization, Sinhala Colonization in North East, Spied to Mullivaaikkaal Massacre and finally defending at UNHRC the Zero Casualty game with Thero De Silva. Muslims’ past flawless repeated successes of high jacking of government has make them over blow the government balloon and now it is broken.

Demalu who were brought to Sinhale by Portuguese from Hindusthan as coolies are occupying the land in North and East where the first Sinhala Kingdoms Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa existed. The Government of Sri Lanka should request the Government of Portugal to take the descendants of coolies brought by Portuguese to Portugal and return the land they grabbed from Sinhalayo to real owners.

After 2011 US Ambassador Blake was persuading Hakeem to manage minority matters with government as they were 9% and Tamils were only 4% as per that time census. Hakeem didn’t say anything at that time; but later ridiculed saying “they (Americans Diplomats) are trying to teach us what to do. We know how to deal our matter with our government.” Government was sending Hakeem to US, EU, ME, India, OIC et al like the way it used Kathirgamar. Hakeem and Rishard went to Geneva with Sinhala Supporting actresses to defend the government. Because that time diaspora Tamils were trying to press international countries to take action through UN, disappointed by Tamils action, Hakeem condemned the Tamils as they were Showing beggar wound and begging from IC”. Because Muslims ministers gave up on Tamil language, culture & changed the dress studied Sinhala & Arabic only, they could not remember the Tamil saying “Aanaikkum Enro Addi Sarukkum, athai arrinthum Eno Veen Seruku” (Even elephants too do miss their steps, avoid unnecessary boasting).

Yesterday Old king said to a group Muslim Businessmen that in the past, the Muslim leaders were selling the Muslim mass and filling their pockets; but did not care the mass. During 2015 election Old King said a Muslim Minister (Indicated only- but sounded like Rishard) had grabbed 5,000 acres of land in North, even his Royal family did get like that.

From 1948 to 2019, Muslim Ministers missed their eyes to see where their ship was going. Now they are crying through noses. Nobody can hear their crying as the flood water is above their noses. We have brought to these columns many things in past. Let us add one more: Unless Sinhala politicians excuse Muslim ministers and take them back, they are marooned, here after. But if Sinhalese prefer in this election Hitler to continue the dictatorship, we don’t see a reason why Sinhalese have to add Muslims back in their Muslims –Sinhala Governments. So if the Muslim Ministers and writers are going to show their beggar wound and beg, now honesty become Tamils again and pull your pants down so the donors can see your beggar wound if you really have one.

On the other hand, the Muslims should also look inwards and rectify areas which are reported to be causing annoyance or raising fears among other communities as they feel that present day Muslims are alienating themselves from the mainstream society due to their changed lifestyles being more Arab rather than indigenous.

In SL moderate non-Muslims are gravitating to far right as a reaction, as more and more Muslims are moving towards fundamentalism
    1. More and more women wear niqub, burka, based on teaching of Preachers/ Mulla’s.
    2. Mulla’s are sent Saudi and come with Saudi Wahhabisam thinking.
    3. ACJU is more and more constituted by eastern Muslims..
    4. Moderate Muslims from Galle /Beruwala are sidelined in leadership.
    5. Muslims are sending more and more kids to Muslim international schools – of few 100’s in each by-lane where they only associate mono-cultural environment – (only other Muslims) and there are no sports of mixing with others.
    6. Saudi/Egypt Qatar sending USD direct to eastern side and politicians to build schools and mosques in their name and spread their brand of religion.
    7. CBSL not checking and requiring approval for USD coming in – allowing funding from ISIS.
    8. Muslims girls more and more asked to cover fully.. removed from schools /sports/ drama and married off underage.

    • 5
      7

      9. All ACJU members opposing MMDA changes and no one willing to openly stand up.
      10. Muslim voices of intellectuals young people are not able to openly talk. Hardly any one queries decisions of ACJU / Islam in media ?
      11. Islam academia not existent in SL Muslim community other than people who have religious Wahhabism in Saudi.. not many PHD theologians in Islam from Colombo, and even fewer females PHD.
      12. Halal certification – extended to non-food products.. focused on alienating non-Muslim products..
      13. Muslims avoiding any food place that has pork.. 10-15 years ago Galle Muslims know how to co-exist and they will not eat pork but will sit with all communities and eat at same location. Now this has also changed due to fear / pressure to conform.
      14. Muslims only patronizing their own shops / businesses.
      15. Unabated building of mosques for disproportionate % of population.
      16. Unabated increase in children in families (more than 3 ) without practice of family planning and religious leaders fueling this thinking.

The list goes on and on….

Muslims made four mistakes. 1)Breading like rats to increase their population with the aim of taking over parts of the country. 2) not learning sinhala. 3)building mosques all over place and loudly broadcasting prayers. 4) muslim politicians siding with whatever party and bragging about being ” KING MAKERS”.
The Chinese are using over 1 million unighar muslims to build roads and other infrastructure projects. Wonder of Sri Lanka can send about 500000 men, women and children including Mohammed hares to help them and pay off our debt to the Chinese. It’s a win win for everyone. Muslims can live with other muslims in the fastest growing economy- a better proposition than living in the north and east while the government can pay less interest to the Chinese.

Among Sinhalayo there is a saying ‘Okkoma Kunu Beruwal Bokkata’ (all garbage ends up in Beruwala Bay). For everything that goes wrong with minorities in Sri Lanka, Sinhalayo are responsible. In a way there is an element of truth with what they say.

In case of Demala people, Sinhalayo gave citizenship to Demala laborers brought by colonial rulers and abandoned in Sinhale instead of sending them back to their homeland in Hindusthan from where their ancestors came. So why not Sinhalayo take the responsibility.

In case of Muslims, Sinhalayo saved their ancestors when they faced persecution by Portuguese, allowed them to settle down in interior parts of the country, allowed them to marry Sinhala women and convert them to Islam and gave citizenship in Sinhale. So why not Sinhalayo take the responsibility.

It is quite distressing that religious sentiments are being whipped up for political gain by proxies acting on behalf of political masters. As usual, minorities are the scapegoats, where some choice names of people who have been in the spotlight perhaps more than a year earlier are again highlighted. Some names do conjure up a bad taste and some revulsion. However, much of the substance used in the mainstream media, is deliberately designed for disdain more than for factual accuracy. On the other hand, if one takes Islam for example, there are many communities primarily in the Mid East (largely Arabic) whose rhetoric is almost exclusively violent and murderous. The fact that they remain impotent against far more powerful enemies is a moot point. Sri Lankan Muslims in recent decades have adopted some lifestyle habits that are directly transplanted from the mainly Sunni traditions in the Mid East. These overt adoptions, including dress and demeanour do invite criticism and some contempt. I believe that moderation and more intimate mingling with the mainstream will dampen efforts by the chaos mongers to capitalise on differences in the cusp of Sri Lankan parliamentary elections, although the full benefit of such blending would become palpable in the longer term.

Any uncivilized folks would easily grab power through promotion of racism and extremism because that is the easiest way to manipulate the people. Those who continously recite the song of JATHIALAYA – patriotism – should and must declare their assets and how they gather them during the last few years. That can open the heart-heart connections with genuine people in this country. That will clear the way making the voters even more knowledgble as to why their votes be given to the reliable, able, educated men.

After WWII, countries like Germany and Japan worked diehard for their econimies and reached their powerful statuses as of today. They prove man power could lead them to powerful economies. South korea, Singapore, Thaiwan and several like minded countries did the same. Even if they had their beliefs, but they never let those beliefs to control their political mechanisms. Each of these countries worked for their goals in parallel – they invested that much for the education. South koreans are now believed to be one of th leading countries that offer their children with better schooling.

So long people would not have the knowledge to see it beyond, vicious politicians could twist their vulnerablity on and on.

Thanks to some good politicians free education, Free Health so many other good achievements for the public, have made this nation highly literate in the south asian regions. Not many things but in this aspect, srilanka scores more.

    • 5
      3

Some compare it with that of Singapore and some western countries. However political literacy is far lower in average mind set because over 70% of the country believe peoples achievement could well be connected with myths, astrology, witchery and other invisible forces than genuine human achievements. Recent sicen and medical break throughs have achieved a lot for the benefit of the people across the globe, however, many countries and their peoples are very much caught by superstitious beliefs rather than man’s discoveries.
      :
. Far poor african states remain to be poor not because they are short of natural resources but not having proper leaderships to give them a life. Asian continent is not comparable to that of african but some countries, in south asian region seem to march in the lines of some steps being taken by primitive african leaders. Ethiopia until recent years stayed stagnant in their under poverty levels not because they lacked leaders but their previous leaders were obsssed with nationalitc agendas. Like frogs in a well, those peoples did not see a world beyond their bounderies. However, current leadership in Ethiopia is somewhat open to the west and china for the investments. Today, european markets overflow the fruits, vegetable and flowers being imported from Ethiopia.Ethiopians are considered to maintain a fast growing economy today – compared to many other countries in that continent.

The theme of this article is unbelievable as a demonstration of hypocrisyof Islamic apologists of Sri Lanka. It reminds the story of the prawn carrying a ‘shit load’ on his forehed, swimming around crying ‘I am the purest, I am the purest (man sudana, man sudana)’.
    =
The deceptive apologist for Islamic hate, selfishness and hypocrisy describes Ven Ratana as a ‘hate monk’ trying to create an ‘explosion’ like Aluthgama, Digana, and anti-Shafi case. He deceptively fails to provide the significant background facts that will explain each of these so-called ‘disasters’ (from his fraudulent point of view).
    =
The most repugnant is his charge that Ratana Thera is trying to cause ‘explosions!. Coming from an apologist for the devil’s agent and animal Saharan and his cohorts, who killed 300 innocent, praying people, CT readers should totally ignore the bile of this shameless, despicable man.
    =
He and his beloved terrorists are the ones full of intolerance, bigotry and extremist ignorance that is much more destructive than the so-called ‘hate speech’ of Ratana Thera.
    =
Ratana Thera, whether you like him or not, hasn’t caused murder.

“2014 anti-Muslim riots in Sri Lanka: The 2014 anti-Muslim riots in Sri Lanka were religious and ethnic riots in June 2014 in south-western Sri Lanka. Muslims and their property were attacked by Sinhalese Buddhists in the towns of Aluthgama, Beruwala and Dharga Town in Kalutara District. At least four people were killed and 80 injured.[237] Hundreds were made homeless following attacks on homes, shops, factories, mosques and a nursery.[238] 10,000 people (8,000 Muslims and 2,000 Sinhalese) were displaced by the riots.[239] The riots followed rallies by Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), a hard line Buddhist group.[240] The BBS was widely blamed for inciting the riots but it has denied responsibility.[241][242][243] The mainstream media in Sri Lanka censored news about the riots following orders from the Sri Lankan government.[244]”

    Hello Mohamed Harees,
Thank you for articulating your perspective. It is encouraging to read that you acknowledge the existence of activities that may be perceived to be more aligned to Arabic traditions than to Sri Lankan traditions. Refer to your comments below.

The issue of religious extremist groups though fringe, is prevalent among the community and sooner they address it, the better for building more amicable relationships with the other communities.

Although the purpose of the article is to promote racial and religious harmony, the focus is on the unacceptable actions of Buddhist monks while only making passing references to Easter attacks. Acts of vandalism in Buddhist places of worship are not even considered worthy of noting.

A foreigner, fed on a diet of Colombo Telegraph articles, could be forgiven for entertaining the thought that Sinhalese Buddhists are racists and are accountable for all the problems in Sri Lanka.

Racism is a huge issue in Sri Lanka, with the minorities constantly being attacked and demonized, and made to feel they do not belong here. This has been made worse by leaders from both parties, making it a tool to win elections, at the expense of minorities, who lose their properties, businesses, and have even lost their lives, every time this anti Tamil or Muslim hatred is stoked and amplified.

Every time the Rajapaksa’s are in power, these anti Muslim campaigns get louder, and spread faster. Every time the Rajapaksa’s are in power, these vile saffron robed terrorists feel enabled, and know they can speak and act like racist thugs without ANY repercussions, and that those in power will stay MUTE, condoning what they do by their silence. Why? Is it because they don’t get the minority vote? What kind of leaders will stay quiet when people in their country are deliberately targeted, attacked, and terrorized? What kind of leaders use the hatred against innocent people, to win elections? Why do these snakes always surface when the Rajapaksa’s are around? During the last regime, at a least one of these snakes was thrown in jail, unlike during the Rajapaksa times, when they are free to go around and spread hate, going totally against Buddhism.

Some Sinhala Intellectuals, who believes it seems they are moderates, are trying to download the responsibilities of latest Sinhalese-Muslim drifts to Muslim women hiding faces. They are mirror image of our sour mouthed friend Harris, but in Sinhala Mirror. Lankawe mothers rented to ME came back covering them head to toe, starting for about 20 years ago. But these commentators, in hidden sense, clearing the Sinhala Muslims politicians’ double games from 1915, using it. If you don’t call a spade “spade”, it is not going to help. Two centuries ago Anagarika Dharmapala taught Sinhala Buddhism is not brought into country by 1500 years old ME women slavery. They are not connected two different anti-social inventions. Sinhala Intellectuals are on the lookout for convicting somebody other than the Sinhala Buddhist politicians for them practicing the modern Sinhala Buddhist racism started by Anagarika Dharmapala. While Sinhala Intellectuals are practicing Anagarika Dharmapala started Sinhala Buddhism, they are accusing Muslim women practicing ME Wahhabism. In November 2019, Anagarika Dharmapala’s Sinhala Buddhism voted against Hakeem, Rishard, Hezbollah pampered ME Wahhabism and plunged the country into dictatorship. But Sinhala Buddhist Intellectuals are hoping to fool the whole world defending them as it is only democracy, voluntarily voted in by the majority. This is how Sinhala Intellectuals are saying one more time that they are practicing racism only because America is doing genocide in Middle East.

Don Stephen was a riot mentor; a convicted criminal; enduring prison term for fueling, creating & leading riots. British administration, unlike JR who addressed to the nation in Radio 1983 “if I starve Tamils more, Sinhalese will be happy” and burned Tamils’ properties, raped and killed many for weeks, British administration arrested & prisoned Don Stephen in 1915 and brought an end to the rioting, saved lives and properties. That is the same Don later brought MMDA to isolate Muslim women and cover them and hides them in closets. There is no parallel to MMDA in the world in a democratic system and it is not an accepted conventional Islamic law, either. It is a mix of Old Hindu customs and harsh parts of the Sharia law. It was extremely way beyond how the Muslims of that time in Ceylon lived. That is, in reality, another Dharmapala slavery dream law came under the name of Islam. MMDA was voted and made law by Sinhala majority. It is they who now blaming the enslaved Muslim women for covering them isolating from Sinhala Intellectuals and causing for communal riots.
The only way if Sinhala Intellectuals fixing Lankawe (if they want to) is should stop explain always in the manner “America did it fist”, but when they see some wrong they should just stop doing it.

    Mr. Harris

“……present day Muslims are alienating themselves from the mainstream society due to their changed lifestyles being more Arab rather than indigenous.”

I believe this is a veiled reference to the dressing habits. There are some very stringent comments from some others, particularly in relation to female attire.

    I have some questions.

    1. Is there any Sri Lankan dress? If so, what is it for males and females? I wear sarong and a banian at home
and when I go out of the house, I wear a Troucer and shirt even if it is to the shop on top of the road. I don’t
know from where the Sarong and Shirt came but I do know that the Troucer, worn by most Lankan males
now, is NOT Lankan, but Western.

    2. I understand that the Lankan females were going Topless till the white man came to Sri Lanka a few
centuries back. That would mean that any female garment covering the upper part of the body is Not
    Lankan, but Western.

    3. It would appear that there is very little Lankan about Dress, both male and female. So, I find it hard to
understand why some Lankans should so vehemently Oppose the so-called Arab Dress and should have
NO Objection to the Western or other non-Sri Lankan Dress.

Sri Lankan Muslims , in reality a religious not an ethnic identity. In no country in the world is being a Muslim an ethnic or racial identity , as Islam is a religion and not a race and people belonging to many races, ethnicities and linguistic groups can belong to it . Islam itself has many sects and practiced differently in many parts of the world according to the local culture. Only in Sri Lanka these local immigrant Indian origin ethnic Tamil Muslims , were deliberately classified as a separate ethnicity first by the British and then after independence very earnestly by all Sinhalese led governments and the selfish power hungry Muslim elite and politicians. resulting in a lot of hatred and chaos , especially in the Tamil east , by these lies and myths.

    • 7
      2

Only the Sinhalese and these power hungry Muslim politicians and elite have benefitted from this fake classification and artificial division amongst the island’s Tamils on the basis of religion. To justify this difference they were highlighting the miniscule amount of Arab ancestry that only a few hundred southern elite Muslim families partially had, whilst completely ignoring the fact that 95% of the island’s Muslims did not have any Arab or other western Asian ancestry but were purely descended from largely low caste Hindu Tamil converts to Islam. Even the remaining 5% who were partially Arab or anything else were more than 85% Dravidian Tamil by descent. Which makes the Sri Lankan Muslims in reality Tamils . To be fair to the British they took this Arab/Moor origin for the island’s Muslims with a pinch of salt and other than classifying them nominally as “Moors” they lumped them with the island’s Tamils for everything , as they knew these people were Tamil Muslims and were not Arabs or anything else. It is only after independence this dividing and ruling and setting up one Tamil group against the rest of the Island’s Tamils (indigenous and Indian origin) on the basis of religion and a fake imagined Arab origin began is earnest to benefit the Sinhalese and the ruling Muslim elite.

From the word go , the island’s Muslims or at least their so called leaders/politicians , for perceived political and economic benefits, denied and forsook , their rich 1000 year old Dravidian Sufi Tamil Islamic culture , that they brought from their original South Indian homeland ( modern day Tamil Nadu and Southern Kerala) . They started to brainwash the island’s Muslim masses who were 100% Tamil Dravidian that they were all purely of Arab descent and to hate their own Tamil heritage language and culture and feel ashamed of this rich ancient classical language and culture and worship everything remotely connected to Arabs. No other Muslim ethnic group in the world behaved in thier treacherous manner towards their own language, culture and ethnicity like these Sri Lankan Muslims. They happily joined the Sinhalese from the word go to commit all sorts of crimes , discrimination , against the island’s Tamils , be it in the field of education, employment or illegal land grabbing.. It was a Muslim minister who introduced standardization , to deny deserving Tamil students higher education, so that far less qualified Sinhalese and Muslims students were able to enter university at the expense of the more qualified Tamils. in the South of the island Muslim mobs and thugs , organized by Muslim politicians, many of whom had a recent Tamil Nadu origin, joined Sinhalese mobs during state sponsored anti Tamil pogroms .

These South Indian origin Muslims only arrived there as refugees a few centuries ago and have no right to any of the eastern Tamil lands. This was the reason the LTTE attacked the Kattankudi Mosque that was a hot bed of Islamic extremism then as now, and acted as the head quarters of these Islamic Home guards. They were beginning to do the same in the north but the LTTE caught them in time and sent them packing. In May 2009 Muslims were seen openly rejoicing and celebrating with the Sinhalese on what happened to the Tamils and Muslim politicians were openly bragging that the Tamil east , is now theirs and were taking steps to forcibly Islamize /Wahhabise and Arabise the ancient Dravidian Hindu Tamil east, where the Tamils are still the largest community. In Short these fake Arab Indian origin immigrant largely low caste Tamil Hindu converts to Islam , have taken everything from the island’s Tamils but have always been acting against them from the word to , in the name of Islam and Arabism . These people are a curse on us and will always be . They are now crying and stating unfair as their co partners in the Eelam Tamil genocide the Sinhalese have now turned on them , as they have no use for them and have also realized who they really are their real motives.

“This was the reason the LTTE attacked the Kattankudi Mosque”
No even the dumbest LTTE leader would have uttered such nonsense.

Yes we all know that you are self hating Tamil who constantly runs downs Tamils to find favour with Sinhalese racists and Islamic extremists. You come here and keep on attacking the Tamils on this forum but never a harsh word for a Sinhalese racist or Islamic fanatic, If you have your way , you will all want all Tamils to cow tow to Sinhalese Buddhist Fascists and Fake Arab Islamic Wahhabis and sell their birth right. No one takes you seriously you are just a jike

In the east Islamic home guards heavily armed and supported by the Sri Lankan STF( Special Task Forces ) started to attack ancient Tamil Hindu villages of the indigenous Tamils , especially in the Amparai district (but it happened in all three districts) . They burnt , raped , looted , destroyed many Hindu temples and ethnically cleansed many villages of the Hindu Tamils and the Tamilised Hindu Vedda population , who make up a high percentage of the present day Hindu Tamils in the east. Many ancient HIndu Tamil villages in the east have now been converted to 100% Islamic villages and its original Hindu Tamil owners not allowed to return, thereby reducing the Eelam Tamil population from 46% to 40% in the east. ( before state sponsored illegal Sinhalese colonization the indigenous Tamils were 60% of the east , and were the over 70% in the Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts , the rest were largely these immigrant South Indian origin fake Arab Tamil Muslims now calling themselves ” Moors” sic)

        Muhandiram,

Nonsense . The origins or ancestry of the Sri Lankan Muslims is Tamil Dravidian , the same as the rest of the Tamils, a little bit of mixed ancestry does not change this, We all have a little bit of mixture in our ancestry. As for religion it someone’s personal belief and has nothing to do with race or origin. Islam is a world religion and that is practiced by many races and ethnicities and not an ethno centric religion like Sikhism , Judaism ETC that associated with only a certain ethnic group and only practiced by them and no one else . Sri Lankan Muslims fail on this point to as the religion practiced is not distinct to them and not found anywhere else to claim a special ethnicity. You can be a Muslim and a Tamil , a Muslim and an Arab a Hindu and a Tamil , a Hindu and a Punjabi . Ethnicity and religion are two separate things , Any one can change their faith but not their ethnicity or origin

Aha , my reply to you to was deleted , may be I was too harsh , however going to keep it short and sweet. Please tell me how the Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors as they love to call themselves, are distinct and different to the Tamils in the island , to classify themselves as a separate ethnic group? Is their origin different from the Tamils? Do not come up with this miniscule amount of Arab and other origins to justify a different origin , Is their and majority origin different from the Tamils? The answer is no? Do they practice a distinctive religion or faith , that is only unique to them and not found anywhere else in the world or amongst other people Eg. Like being a Druze or a Yazidi? The answer is no . They practice a religion that is followed by millions of others , from different backgrounds. They can be called Muslims but the ethnicity or origin is still Tamil. Even the Druze call themselves Arabs and the Yazidi call themselves Kurds and the Sikhs identify themselves as Punjabi. Lastly culture do the Sri Lankan Muslims have a distinctive culture from the rest of the Tamils ? The answer is no again .

Rajapakse Family Members are the “God Fathers” of religious and race racists. They have to be wiped out of politics.

    Dear leelagemalli,
    .
Let me tell you this very clearly. You are one of the nicest and kindest people that I have come across, and I’m pretty sure that my opinion of you on that score is most, most, unlikely to ever change.
    .
I’ve been a teacher of English all my life and I know that however rigorous the standards applied are, my command of the English language is good. Since it is about the only skill that I possess it is something that should be expected of me, and is not something for me to feel proud about. I think that I have frankly admitted that despite my pseudonym it is only my oral Sinhala (both speaking and listening) that is upto the mark. My education was supposedly in the Sinhala medium up to Grade 8 (that was the official position) but thereafter I have not done much reading and writing in Sinhala. Nevertheless, I can read (rather slowly) almost anything in Sinhala. My writing is not great. There was a time when I felt ashamed to confess this inadequacy – not I try not to bother about it. The only other language I know is English.

    .
In your case, I get the feeling that you can use quite a few other languages – e.g. German, quite well. Your Sinhala writing is good – I have read the occasional comment. I don’t read often because it is a laborious process for me – but make no mistake, I can read most things when I have to. It would be interesting to know just how many languages you know.
    .
I think that you know that SJ and I sometimes clash on one subject – Jeevan Hoole. It may be that I’m the one who has got it all wrong on that score. SJ is a Professor of Engineering but his command of English equals or exceeds mine. The same is true of old codger, Plato, the Hooles, Ruwan Laknath Jayakody, Champa, Soma, etc. Once we get to that level it is a plateau, really. It is meaningless to compare commands of language. The question becomes one of whether we write sense of not.

    Section C
    .
It may be that you are trying too hard to comment on everything that you see. In your effort to finish with one subject and move on to the next, you sometimes carelessly lapse into Pidgin English. Never mind – you are such a nice person that I don’t really want you to change from that generosity of spirit.
    .
However, I must be honest enough to say that to me, you sometimes sound naive. For instance on the subject of poverty. Poverty is a relative term, and you find the poor in all societies. I sometimes unfacetiously call myself poor, but mine is not grinding poverty.
    .
I know that because of your kindness of heart, you want to alleviate every bit of poverty that you see. That’s why you’ve been giving us all those YouTubes on “Welassa Poverty”. Yes, and in places they may not have yet fully recovered from 1818. What happened then? British Governor Brownrigg deliberately destroyed the economy of the area. Of course, it’s high time we recovered! Comparisons are often odious. So let us not compare that with what our Sri Lankan government forces have imposed on those living in the Eastern Province. (Soma, please understand the context!)

    Section D
    .
    leelagemalli,
you are a little too sensitive. It is like that with very kind people!
    .
Now, in the case of the Wellassa Poverty, I don’t like those videos. To be specific, I see that smug young man who goes about building houses, etc. as trying to impress the poor villagers as himself being superior. “Arousing feelings of pity is not a very nice thing.” I’ve put that sentence within quotes so as to ask you to meditate on it – long and deep!
    .
The main point here is that you are highlighting with the good intention of alleviating poverty. rj1952 rejoices that people are poor, and curses them, and hopes that they will continue to be poor. I have stopped trying to diagnose the problems with him, but I’d say that they likely come from many sources. He lacks intelligence. He has been badly educated. That may not have been the fault of his teachers. Some students “resist” education.

      Dear SM,
Yes may be, but I cant be aware of the truths me being out of the country for many years. Even if I travel to the country very often, I dont get all the bits the way you guys get them while living there. You lived their 7 decades but mine is not even 2. Anyways, my heart melts whenever I see that much of poverty in that country even if politicians manipulate the numbers for their selfish gains. I too sometimes feel that you guys have no actual numbers of the destitute levels striking in UVA province. Some of them are not entitled to Samurdhi ( state grants – I hav eno idea much about this)- I become very sad, looking at the very poor people – kids not having the basics but politicians run their luxuary life styles on the cost of the tax payer s funds. Most people are not aware of that those taxes come from them. I dont think any hearted leaders would ever waste the sums to the manner Rajaakshes are upto. There you could say – that may be well connected with his education, background and the manner they are raised by those abusive parentes.
