Maithri-Ranil’s Wisdom Of Creating A Muslim Diaspora

By Latheef Farook

Latheef Farook

The  senseless violence unleashed on peaceful Muslims by a  group of Sinhalese racist mercenaries, perhaps backed by powerful local and international forces, has opened up a second hostile front ,after Tamil diaspora, to the island in the international scene.

Ever since the carnage began in Digana on 4 March 2018 and spread to other Muslim villages around Kandy there has been numerous processions, protest marches, meetings and demonstrations all over the world demanding Sri Lankan government to ensure the safety and security of the island’s Muslims.

It is the sole responsibility of any elected government to protect its citizens, their properties and their legitimate rights. In this respect Maithri-Ranil government has miserably failed to protect the island’s Muslims whose votes played crucial role in Sirisena becoming the President and Wickremesinghe the Prime Minister.

However the two have dismissed and discarded the Muslims and joined hands with global anti-Muslims forces not realizing the serious local and international consequences.

Sri Lanka is loved by Muslims worldwide, Muslim countries and their governments. Around a million Sri Lankans were employed in the Gulf countries and beyond. Their remittances, around eight billion dollars a year, remains extremely inevitable to sustain the country’s collapsing economy.

However neither the President Sirisena nor the Prime Minister Wickremesinghe both of whom travel worldwide signing bilateral agreements never thought it fit to visit these Gulf countries. This was their mindsets towards Muslims and the Muslim world.

With the change of government Muslims thought they would enjoy peace and justice.

However their hopes were dashed within months as both President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesingjhe virtually abandoned the Muslim community as proved later.

When sporadic attacks on Muslims began to intensify and the government turning blind eye   delegation after delegation brought the rising racist attacks to the knowledge of President Sirisena. Instead of bringing the culprits to book President Sirisena dismissed saying” this was Mahinda Rajapaksa’s conspiracy to topple the government”.

Muslims did not know what to do. These attacks intensified until the attacks on Gintota Muslims when the police and the STF were accused of involvement followed by the burning of Digana and other Muslim villages around Kandy.

The prompt response was demonstration and protest meetings worldwide by Sri Lankan Muslims living abroad. The irony is that this happens at a time when the country has not fully recovered from the July 1983 attacks on Tamils, 30 year ethnic war and the alleged atrocities and human rights violence.

Sinhalese and Tamils joined hands with Muslims to express their anger at the government in numerous cities in the United Kingdom, New York, near United Nations office, Canada, Geneva and Paris where Sri Lankan Muslims from all over France gathered in freezing cold to Australia.

They were given widespread publicity in both print and electronic media tarnishing the image of the island. President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe should take full responsibility for this calamity on the country.

Sri Lankan Academics Abroad Condemn Violence against Muslim Community. In a letter to president they stated that;

We write to condemn ongoing violence against Sri Lanka’s Muslim community, especially the brutal attacks perpetrated over the past week. We are outraged that the government has failed to act speedily and decisively to stop the violence and bring those responsible to justice.

The government must act firmly to prevent more destruction and bloodshed. The scale and nature of recent attacks on the Muslim community are the result of years of successive regimes in Sri Lanka pandering to chauvinist nationalists. Targeted and organized attacks against Muslim communities in Ampara, Teldeniya, and Kandy are not isolated incidents, but must be seen within a longer history of attacks on Muslims in Sri Lanka, including wartime violence by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) against northern and eastern Muslims.

After the end of the war, majoritarian attacks against Muslims living in the East and South have escalated. In May 2014, Sinhala Buddhist nationalists attacked and burned the Muslim-owned store, Fashion Bug, and its head offices in Colombo. In June 2014, Sinhala Buddhist nationalists again carried out anti-Muslim riots in Aluthgama, Beruwala and other areas in the Kalutara District. In 2017 alone, there were 20 documented incidents of violence against Muslims, including the September 2017 attack on a UNHRC shelter housing 31 Muslim Rohingya refugees in Colombo.

Sinhala Buddhist monks led this last attack in direct violation of international human rights treaties on the protection of refugees, which Sri Lanka has ratified. In some of these instances, members of the police and security forces were present, but did nothing to halt the perpetrators or protect the victims. While some civil society organizations in Sri Lanka have condemned these orchestrated acts of violence, the government has failed to hold the responsible political and religious figures to account.

Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), for example, openly propagates hate speech against Muslims, and promotes xenophobia, racism, and bigotry. Such actors do not operate in a vacuum; the ‘inaction’ of political authorities and the police against them is in fact an active intervention, encouraging groups like the BBS and Maha Sohon Balakaya to act with impunity. We, members of the Sri Lankan diaspora, and Sri Lankans living abroad, from all of the country’s diverse communities, stand in solidarity with our Muslim sisters and brothers.

We believe that declaring a state of emergency and curbing free media and social networks are not sustainable solutions to issues of equal rights and the protection of minorities. In the long run, such measures will only expand the repressive powers of the state. The government must take swift action to bring those responsible for anti-Muslim violence to justice.

We call on the government to hold accountable law enforcement and political authorities who have reneged on their responsibility to protect all members of the Sri Lankan community. We also call on the government to move on long-term questions of constitutional reform that can lay the foundation for a future of peace with justice and security for all its citizens, including minorities.

Unfortunately racist politicians and their mercenaries failed to realize the great Muslim contributions to this country. For example it was their crucial support facilitated the process of Sri Lanka  gaining  independence from British in 1948 and help end almost four and half centuries of European colonial rule in the island.

Muslims played a decisive role   in preserving the territorial integrity of the island. For example, during the early days of Tamil militants’ call for a separate state they had the full backing of India and the island’s armed forces were not equipped   to deal with them.

From the very inception, Muslims vehemently opposed calls for the division of the country and firmly stood for territorial integrity and unity. Nevertheless, they were entangled into ethnic conflict only to face death, devastation, loss of properties and livelihood and displacement with no appreciation.

Had the Muslims joined the Tamil militancy during its early stage the island’s fate would have been sealed and the history would have projected a new political landscape.

Short sighted Sinhalese politicians who thrive on the misery of minorities should realize that Muslims, like Sinhalese, Tamils and others, have settled down here centuries ago. They are not on transit but full-fledged citizens. Unless Sinhala racists, racist politicians and others   wake up to this reality this country will never enjoy peace and will never move ahead to the detriment of all.

The mindset that “this is purely a Sinhala Buddhist country” is bound to bring nothing but disaster for all.

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it.” – Joseph Goebbels

Lathif, You and other Muslims keep writing the same article again and again with full of lies and bullsh1t. Joseph Goebbels has become the Muslim writers’ mentor.

Muslims caused the 1915 Kandy riot, Aluthgama riot , Ginthota riot, Ampara riot, and Digana riots. Prabakaran with the help of India caused the 1983 riots. In all these Sinhalese are the real victims, they are loosing their Sinhala-Buddhist country for minority menace.

Had the Muslims joined the Tamil militancy during its early stage the island’s fate, it would be ” two birds in one stone”.

T.B. Jayah was a Malay-Jaa, not a Marakkala Muslim menace. Marakkala Muslims’ contribution to Sri Lanka is in the minus (-), they are like leeches and pests, live off Sinhalese. Who asked you cunning 5 million Muslims to come to Sri Lanka???

Leave Kuragala, Dewanagala, 10000 acre Muhudumaha viharaya, 15000 acre Digawaiya, Dabulla holy city, Anuradhapura holy city, WILPATTUWA, and other Buddhist archeological sites without making any demands or conditions before things get nasty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ralli Ameen, there appears to be something radically wrong with your senses. You are insulting Tamils and Sinhalese when you are confronted by statements which may be true or false. Why cannot you respond to them in a decent manner. By your behaviour especially challenging Sinhalese, you are only fuelling hatred.

An Historical, Political, and Statistical Account of Ceylon Volume 1 ( 1848 )
      Charles Pridham

The Moormen” now found in Ceylon are not descendants of the Moguls who invaded the peninsula. They resemble them neither in manners, appearance, nor dress, although they profess the same religion. One branch of them are the descendants” of the Arabs, who in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, were led by commercial pursuits and the thirst for WEALTH, to make themselves masters of several seaports of India, and many of the islands. Among these Arabs was a law common with the Jews, whose religion and ceremonies they in many respects followed, that they should only intermarry with their own people, but those who had fixed their residence in these distant regions were compelled to sanction a connexion with Indian women. When the Moguls spread rapine and bloodshed throughout India, the riches of the Arabs rendered them an object of their cupidity. Harassed and persecuted by their conqueror, they fled, and returned to their country, leaving behind their children born of Indian women, who, by embracing the Mohammedan religion as their fathers had done in Arabia, obtained a quiet residence and the appellation of Moormen. The other branch of Moormen are the IndoMoors,” who settled in large numbers in the districts of Chilau and Putlam at a subsequent period, and have assimilated themselves so closely to their western brethren, as to be no longer distinguishable.

      James Stewart – 2015 –
The whole nation in one day have risen against the Moor people. Muslims are aliens. They have insulted the Sinhalese people. The conflict will remain forever. Recall that Dharmapala remains a major figure for proud Sinhalese and die-hard nationalists alike and his image is sometimes found hung on people’s walls. His views on Muslims will of course colour how some Sinhalese view Muslims even today

Oh really but other than a very small minority they all look very South Indian and their core DNA is South Indian with far below average Arab or other western Asian input. Whom are you trying to fool? Some of these so called British historians did not know anything and were just retelling myths for their divide and rule agenda. The Sri Lankan Muslims are converted Dravidian immigrants from South India. There is a bit of Arab in some families. However this miniscule Arab contribution to their DNA does not make them Arab. Sinhalese and Tamils also have Arab European and British genes in them , however you do not see them going around claiming to be Arab European or British.

Muslim Diaspora! Where? In Saudi Arabia? Malaysia? Indonesia? Islamic Central Asia? Bosnia? Try gaining asylum in any of the these Islamic countries none of them will want you. Saudi Arabia has exported Wahhabi/Isis terrorism to neighbouring Arab lands and do not want to take a single Arab Muslim fleeing from these lands and they also do not want to go there. Malaysia is not interested in non Malay Muslims and treats them like second rates. Ask your close relatives the Tamil Muslims in Malaysia, how they are treated? The same with Indonesia. They treat Muslims refugees trying to flee through their lands to places like Australia New Zealand like dirt too. These refugees also do not want to find refuge in these Islamic paradises but want to flee to Christian Australia and New Zealand and these people do not want them too. All these restriction on boat people in Australia came because of them . They made up around 99% of the boat people to Australia. The same with Turkey or Bosnia they will not take you Dravidian South Asian Muslims, at one refugee camp in Australia European Muslim Albanian Kosovars complained that do not want to live in the same camp with darker skinned Arabs. Other than Germany see how the Muslim Syrian refugees are not wanted anywhere, Now even Germany does not want them. Christian/Yazidi Syrians and Iraqi minorities are given preference. Don’t think the world/west will be generous will be as generous to Sri Lankan Muslims ,as they were to the fleeing Tamils. They gave asylum to 1 million Tamils , 1/3 of the Sri Lankan Tamil population, as they knew they were hardworking, law abiding , will assimilate and will be future assets to their lands and other than a few bad apples this has been proven. Even Muslims who fled to the west , sought asylum as Tamils and not as Muslims as no one wants you.

Here the Moor bashing RSSS Australoid crow cawing again. Who is the Moor who wants to get into these countries? You thought Moors are Kallathonis like your clan? For your information donkey, Saudi Arabia and Turkey have the largest amount of refugees from Syria and Iraq. Malaysia do not want you slave Tamils because they already have big amount of slaves brought by British. Muslims go there not in Kallathonis but legally to start a business or engaged in productive works. In Indonesia suppliers for Gem market in Sorabaya and Jakarta monopolized by good number of Moors. They have head ache from you Tamil kallathonis. Afghanistan and other middle-eastern countries refugees have preferential treatment there. In which Turks and Bosnian refugee camp they didn’t want to live with Asian Muslim? Your usual fabrication. There are no Moor refugee claimant in Australia. All are your crow clique. One time I remember in Germany, in a single night they rounded up all Tamil refugees and packed them off to Sri Lanka immediately because they did not want you all there. There are millions of Muslim refugees in Germany and when the middle-east trouble are over they might deport more than half. That is natural. Yes not only British but others too knew you all are slavish types so they kept you all for their menial works like toilet cleaning. You Dutch slaves in Sri Lanka thinks too much of yourself.

    Latif,

“Had the Muslims joined the Tamil militancy……………” <- this will never happen because Tamils (e.g. Ponnambalm) believe Marakkala Muslims are actually ethnic Tamils who have become Muslim in order to escape caste discrimination. Tension between Muslims and Tamils keep growing in the Eastern province.

      Johnny,

If the Muslims would have joined the Tamils, it would have been a heck lot easier. We could have killed two birds with one stone. Would have saved us so much time and effort.

Anyway, it’s time for Sinhalese to arm themselves now against this Muslim menace. Had the Jews been armed, the Holocaust would have never happened.

    Latheef ;

You seem to have difficulties in understanding the meaning of “diaspora”. Most of your ancestors; majority of them came from Kerala and Tamil Nadu of India. Prior to their arrival, a handful came as merchants from North Africa, mainly Morocco. That is where your roots lie. Choice is yours, there is no problem for you to get back there. So do not misinterpret the word “Diaspora”.

    • 5
      8

Correct they migrated from what was then Tamil Kerala and Tamil Nadu and there is very little Arab or Moor in them. Even the once who migrated from Kerala are from South Kerala and not from the Mappila Muslim strongholds of North Kerala. The Muslims from South Kerala are ethnic Tamil Muslims whom the Malayalis derogatively called Thullkans.. They did not use this name for their own Mappila Muslims. the Sri Lankan Moor is a superficial identity, from the Portuguese era The Portuguese used this identity not with love, but to denigrate a community which they hated “The Portuguese were zealots who were against Islam. With the fall of Spain, they looked down upon Muslims, they called any Muslim they met in the Indian subcontinent as Moor. This matter of the ethnic marker was not taken up seriously until the 1880s when legislative councillor Ponnambalam Ramanathan wrote an artiicle about the Sri Lankan Moors that claimed that they were of Tamil origin. It was a time at which the colonial government was considering giving representation for Muslims in the legislature. Who until then were considered outsiders. The Muslims of the Colombo elite, at the time, realized that if they did not abolish this idea, they would lose representation. So, they took on the identity of Moors as opposed to Tamils. This is how the Muslims of Sri Lanka came to embrace this identity. Ponnambalam Ramanathan did not want to deny them representation but correctly pointed out that they should be represented under the Tamil identity like the Christian Tamils and not separate.

RSSS who care about your Ponnambalam. May be he belongs to your Australoid crow clique. You always caw about Portuguese calling us Moors after seeing the Spanish Moors. Yes that is the truth. Can you erase it. What do you know about Mapilai, Marikkars, Moplas, Rawther, Thulukkar etc. I had onece given you the detailed explanation but when you interpret all these other way about what we can do. It is your inferior complex that you get when you see your face in the mirror as an Australoid crow.

      Historian

What is the meaning of “Diaspora” Group of people from one country living in anther country. So all the Tamil kallathonis who went as refugees are diaspora in the country they live. Moors living in West and other countries in the east is diaspora but they did not go in Kallathonis. What connection Kerala and Tamil Nadu have? Is Sri Lankan Government considering us as Diaspora? Are you an Australoid historian?

    Mr. Farook,
Give your sermon to Wahabi extremists who are trying to create a mini Saudi Arabia in the Eastern province and to racist Muslim politicians who like to promote division for their own political survival. M H M Ashraff who formed Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) is the father of Muslim racism. At present there are a few Muslim politicians following his footsteps. There are so many countries that claim that they are purely Muslim countries. David Cameron said UK is a Christian country. But these guys are asking Sri Lanka with 75% Buddhists that we should not consider Sri Lanka as a Sinhala Buddhist country. Sinhalayo are paying the price for the blunder committed by King Senerath, a Sinhala Buddhist.

The Message is Loud and Clear. Will it be heard and acted upon by All concerned so that the country can move Forward? Will the Politicians STOP Pandering to the Sinhala Racists and place the country First and Not their Selfish and Short term Political Gains?

According to Media Reports, during the recent visit of President Sirisena to Pakistan, the Pakistani President has expressed Strong concerns about the attacks on Muslims in Sri Lanka.

It seems the momentum against the Attacks on Muslims is building up Internationally and those in Power can ignore this only at great Loss to the country. Lets hope that saner counsel will prevail for the good of the country..

He keeps protesting but does not do anything about the discrimination and burning of Shia Muslim mosques Ismailis and other non Sunni Muslim sects. Leave them alone what about the attacks on Christian churches and Hindi temples. The kidnapping of Hindu and Christian young women raping them and them forcing them to convert to Islam. Seems this does not bother him. All these protests about Sri Lankan Muslims is just verbal but business as usual. These largely Punjabi and Pashtun Pakistanis are the biggest racists. They do not care for dark skin. They treated the Muslim Bengalis of former East Pakistan atrociously just because they were dark skinned Dravidians. This is why Pakistan split and Banglasesh was born. You think they will treat these dark skinned Dravidian South Indian origin Sri Lankan Muslims no better or care about them

      • 5
        5

Who said Bengalis are Dravidian? They will kill you if you go and say that in Bangladesh. They are Aryans, of course mixed. A Sri Lankan author will always write about their community. What is happening in other countries their people will protest and in other countries for humanity’s sake will protest in support of the victimized country. What do you know about Shia, Ismalis Sunnis? We can fabricate and write as we want but this a low class mentality. If Pakistanis doe not like dark skin means they don’t like you too. Except in far North and hilly villages Pakistan too have dark skinned people. Just because you have some sort of jealousy and hatred toward Muslim don’t fabricate and write lies here.

I have spoken to Bangladeshis about their ancestry and they will not get angry if you tell them they have Dravidian genetic input. Bengali ethnic group is formed of Dravidian, Tibeto-Burman and Austro-Asiatic people. Origin of the world Bengal is unknown but they believe it is derived from Dravidian Banga tribe that settled in the area about 2000 BC. Later Indo-Aryans arrived creating kingdoms of Anga, Vanga and Magadha around 1000 BC. After 600 BC Magadha kingdom extended to include parts of Bihar also. It is interesting to note that Buddha delivered his sermons in Magadhi language. Subsequently 800 years ago Arabs and Persians arrived and settled down. This is the reason why many of the Bangladeshis are dark skinned and were looked down by Pakistanis.

Have been to Pakistan , there are lots of dark Pakistanis, most of them are Urdu speaking Bihari immigrants called Mohajirs who migrated from what is modern India to Pakistan during the partition. Many native Pakistani are also dark but an average Pakistani is far more lighter skinned than even an average North Indian and many of them have very light almost European complexion. You even get a tribe amongst the Baluch who generally are very fair and Iranian looking, called Makrani who have African slave blood.

There are dark Pakistanis and lighter Pakistanis, why it is worrying you?

              Dr. Gnana Sankaralingam

There is no race called Dravidian but this word was coined by Robert Caldwell to group the languages spoken by South Indians. If you go to Kerala and ask a person whether he is Tamil, he will say what shit you talking, “I am a Malayali”. Everywhere it is same. The origin of races is a very complex studies, mostly speculations. Now there is a speculation that original south Indians were from Africa but no solid proof. The truth is thousands of years ago indigenous people of India was Australoid spread all over India and in the far north Mongoloid. When migration took place from west to India those races mixed with Australoids and we have present day Indians, just a mixed races with lighter and dark skins. So don’t speculate on bullshit like Anga, Vanga and Magadhi. There is a speculation Buddha was a Mongoloid, Nepalis claims Buddha was from their race. So nothing can be proved 100% unless from recent history where you have written records.

What Latheef Farook means in “……………..Creating A Muslim Diaspora” is ‘Lankan Muslims living overseas’.
To be effective the overseas Muslims must act independently i.e not getting instructions from Mufti Rizwi.
