Malicious Media Discrediting Government, President Tells Sri Lankans In London

President Maithripala Sirisena lamented that the ‘forward march of the motherland’ is being stymied by certain people’s efforts to suppress truth and inflate untruths.

Addressing a gathering of expatriate Sri Lankans living in London, President Sirisena requested them to understand the true situation and support efforts to put the country back on track, according to a media release of the President’s Media Unit.

Sirisena further stated that correct information about the government’s programme to develop the country while establishing democracy and freedom has not been disseminated to the general public. He principally blamed unnamed media institutions and social media platforms for this state of affairs, claiming that political and commercial objectives have motivated these to suppress the truth and disseminate lies.

He added that the Government has spared no efforts over the last three years to discharge all responsibilities to the ‘beloved motherland’ and noted that turning the peace obtained by establishing reconciliation and co-existence into a sustainable peace has been a priority in these efforts.

President Sirisena boasted that several significant victories have been scored over the past three years including economic policies that have been successful at strengthening the economy of the people and developing the country, and winning over sections of the international community previously arrayed against the country.

We all know the promises made on their foreign visits soon after the 2015 January coronation.
The two muppets promised the world through their teeth Lies nothing but Lies.
They never revisited the promises for the last 3 years.
Now the same old shameless lies at the commonwealth and to the SRILANKAN BUSINESS DIAAASPORA.
PREZ . YOU HAVE TO HONOUR YOUR PROMISES , PLEASE DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME AND OUR TIME.

The speech was not in English. It is in Sinhala. So, it is not directed to International community. There may be lapses in the past three years, there may be failures, promises are not met but most importantly the nation was saved from a dictator who completely wiped out the rule of law, democracy and justice. So far, this govt have not gone to that level of governance. Do we want that governance back? Still we have got time. Central Bank scam undoubtedly a mistake but we know where the money and we can get that back but how we can forget about the suffering of the people under previous regime. 95% of our politicians are opportunistic, corrupted and their only motive is to become rich as Mahinda became the richest in Srilanka. How many of you believe that Mahinda family sacrificed for this country? Will he be prepared to work under anyone’s leadership? Do you think no one is there to lead the country if Mahinda leaves politics or dead tomorrow? How can he become a leader who had not even 5% of the support of Tamils and Muslism? It is not about Mahinda Vs Ranil. It is about people.

Thank you, Ajith, for bringing some balance to the discussion.
        .
You are correct about us not wanting the Rajapaksas back but, unfortunately, this fear of ours is being over-exploited. And you are not an exception: you say that the CB scam was “undoubtedly a mistake”. Your wording suggests that it was wrong only because the perpetration was found out. You continue that we know where the money is, and “we can get that back”. Why hasn’t that been done? We have entrusted a job to these guys; three years, no result. If they are so inefficient that is a major fault.
        .

On the other hand, I see a serious fault in My3’s detractors below: a certain Hubert Ratnasingham has called My3 a “Gamarala”. His other criticisms I don’t mind, but, please, never do this. When pushed, My3 can use a few words of English. At CHOGM conferences there is no simultaneous translation, in the expectation that all leaders of former colonies can speak English. Here’s My3:

        .
No deep thoughts, just a few words to get over that hurdle. Lots of “big”words; I dare say I would have pronounced “social” a bit differently, some word stresses also wrong – but it was a brave performance. Do not scoff.
        .
Until Sri Lankans with a smattering of this foreign language stop baiting the majority of our people who have not been exposed to English early in life, the UNP and the business community will rightly be hated by that majority.

Drop Mahinda as he would be a good premier under the Presidency of Gotabhaya R, for if he contest he is sure to win. He has a vision and goal for the country unlike today’s leaders who has none but, for sure to satisfy themselves only!!!!

International community is dumb. But, Norway is great. they got caught to Tamils but they understood sinhala-buddhists. Norway built the SRIPADA-SAMMA Chithya (Peace PAGODA). Norway is very happy, that buddhists are using it frequently. Only the USA, UK and EU are anti-buddhist and set up majority of the majority versus minorities.

      Dear Mr President,

      “Malicious Media discrediting government….”

      Please truthfully confirm :

      1. Whether or not it was you who discredited publicly, some sections of your own government and its leaders concerning corruption and malpractice within your government, during the run up to the recent elections.

      2. Whether former Uva Province Chief Minister Sampath Dassanayake – the man who shamelessly made a female school principal kneel down in his presence – and whom you rightfully suspended during the election time – has now been reinstated in the same position.

      3. Whether or not the investigations into the massive robberies, murders, abductions and all other unparalleled misdeeds of the last government have been all hushed up and if so, by whom? So far there has been not one conviction to date, and is the public justified in slowly losing their trust on you?

There are many more to be listed but space does not permit such luxury. However, these three stand out because they stink to the high heavens. We have no intention of embarrassing you but isn’t all the discrediting self inflicted? To be honest, at the time you began your term, you enjoyed unprecedented goodwill, but sad to say, it has all begun to ebb away at the rate of knots. Please search your own conscience as to the reasons why. Do you truly believe it the work of the maliciousness of the media ?

        Justice & Fairplay,
        .
It is correct for the President to defend himself, and for him to state that the media are biased against him.
        .
At a deeper level, this is precisely what Yahapalanaya meant by saying that there would be freedom of expression. The opposition is there to oppose and its leadership must soon transition from the decent Sampanthan to the nasty JO of the Rajapaksas.
        .
But we have our values, beliefs, and knowledge of what’s been happening for fifty years. Are one or two of you, who have a conscience, going to get 15 years of brutal and also economically disastrous crimes investigated impartially and have the crooks put in jail before petrol hits Rs 200 per liter (along with similar inflation in other sectors) ?
        .
I am from Uva. Tell me, My3, why have you reinstated that fat thug, Sampth Dassanayake?
        .
OR are we going to see young people bring on a bloody revolution?

        • 0
          0

          Dear Sinhala Man,

“It is correct for the President to defend himself, and for him to state that the media are biased against him.”

Not quite sure what exactly you are trying to say.

If the Malicious Media is discrediting government dont they have only themselves to blame?

How many of our ministers have held the position of a Manager in any recognized establishment?

Therefore how in hell can such people “manage” a ministry? A Minister should be nothing more than a People’s Representative and a figure-head, where the work is carried out by his Permanent Secretary, who shall be well chosen. That is how the public services should run.

Just the reinstatement of that “fat thug” alone is an indication to me, that the President is a very poor Manager, and that goes for Ranil too!

Bring on the professionals into governance. We’ve had just about enough of what we now have!

            Dear Justice & Fairplay,
            .
Yes, I’m sorry that what I have written above is not very clear.
            .
To begin with, I have addressed you, and then, without warning, I’ve begun addressing the government politicians (two factions in the government) and faulting them for their conduct. I’m not sure that I’m making myself clear even now!
            .
The government cannot have it both ways. If they want to appear open and liberal to the world, then they must know that they have to run the gauntlet of criticism.
            .
It may have seemed clever to have Sampanthan as the leader of the Opposition, but it must infuriate the Rajapaksa supporters that they are not allowed to function as the opposition. And they may get mad enough to turn violent. If that happens, yes, the government must blame itself.
            .
A year ago it was from Dr Ameer Ali that I first heard the word “kakistocracy”; but just last week it’s become a vogue word in the United States:
            .
            https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/apr/18/donald-trump-kakistocracy-john-brennan-us-twitter
            .
Yes, that’s what we appear to have right now in a few places in the world. But not in all places. Let us not get too alarmist.
            .
Given the seeming chaos, I think that we can take some comfort from the fact that most people in the public services are conducting themselves pretty well. When there aren’t politicians and politicised Trade Unions interfering it is still true that most government officers try to help the public.
            .
I think that you’ve dealt gently with me! Must take a break until I work things out.

” …several significant victories have been scored over the past three years including economic policies that have been successful at strengthening the economy of the people and developing the country, and winning over sections of the international community previously arrayed against the country …’
What bullshit. Just because the audience lives away from SL, did Sirisena think he could getaway with the usual political rhetoric? Sirisena, not everything is ‘fake new’ & you have once again proved your self as a blatant lier.
Now that you are in London, you will learn that, at the beginning of the second world war, the UK PM at the time, Neville Chamberlain, who tried to prevent a war by giving into Hitler, was kicked out of Parliament for his ineffective leadership & the famous saying was ‘in the name god, GO’. It’s time we said that to you.

  • 14
    2

What are the “significant” victories I wonder/.Winning over the international community is useless without winning over your own country men. Have you won over the Tamils. Have you released the political prisoners.Have you at least released the two children’s father who lost their mother recently. You seem to have lost your sense of equilibrium in your speeches.

In Sri Lanka today most of the media organizations do not clearly understand what “media freedom” means. For example if we take Maharaja media group, we see News Line (Faraz is the worst), Pathikada (at times – Bandula has improved a lot not other anchor) and Satana do not fact check the lies told by the participants or they themselves direct the discussion towards attacking the Prime Minister. Similarly Aluth Parlimenthuwa – Sanka behaves the same like Faraz of News Line. At times we also see Derana to a lesser extent in their program Balaya do the same (Balaya is much better than others). Media Freedom does not mean that they can direct the discussion or disburse bias information to the public but provide a platform for others to provide their views. Worst of all is when blatant lies are told by the participants the anchors do not Fact Check those lies, this amounts to the media broadcasting or telecasting the false news. This is illegal. The government should immediately bring laws to ensure that Fact Checking is done by the anchors if false or unsubstantiated claims are made by the participants.

While most of the budget goes on debt servicing, how does the unnecessary purchase of an old warship, help develop the country?
How does maintenance of the oversized idling armed forces which swallow the largest chunk of the budget, help in development?
How does alienating land on pretext of “high security” help?

    President Maithripala Sirisena,

RE: Malicious Media Discrediting Government, President Tells Sri Lankans In London

So what is the truth, today, yesterday and the the day before? Any evidence for the truth?

Yes, we all lament that the ‘forward march of the motherland’ is being stymied by certain people’s efforts to suppress truth and inflate untruths.

Let’s start with Mahawamsa with the lies and imaginations by Para-Monk Mahanama, and continue to this day, courtesy of the Para in the Land of Native Veddah Aethho.

Mitochondrial DNA history of Sri Lankan ethnic people: their relations within the island and with the Indian subcontinental populations

Through a comparison with the mtDNA HVS-1 and part of HVS-2 of Indian database, both Tamils and Sinhalese clusters were affiliated with Indian subcontinent populations than Vedda people who are believed to be the native population of the island of Sri Lanka.

So what is the truth, today, yesterday and the the day before? Any evidence for the truth?

      Many thanks, Amarasiri,
      .
But what are we doing? President in London attacks “unfair press” – the press is there to attack the government, who in turn must defend themselves. Nothing strange, especially given the three-way power struggle among the Sinhalese: Rajapaksas; My3; UNP.
      .
But what do we end up discussing – as usual! History before recorded written accounts! why can’t we live our lives today?
      .
However, thanks for the 2014 Sharmini Serasinghe article with its 1068 comments (some thousands of words long, at a time when there was no limit), and for the link to the Abstract from the Journal of Human Genetics.
      .
It gets clearer to me every passing day that (apart from the poor “Estate Tamils” brought in less than 200 years ago by the British), there is only one now homogeneous ethnic group in this country, made up of South Indian and Vedda DNA (the latter more important than we had thought), speaking the very ancient Tamil language, and Sinhalese which has evolved in Sri Lanka, heavily influenced by Pali, about 1,500 years ago.
      .
Understanding all this has been made possible by the Internet, and the Google Search Engine. Let us be grateful, but not get controlled by them, or anybody else.
      .
Can’t we now acknowledge that, and get on with our lives? It looks as though we are all fated to live in to our nineties – but let us retire at least at seventy, and let younger people run this country.
      .
We have sinned. Let them have some sort of world to live in.

If one notices carefully, even the way the participants are seated during political discussions on TV there is bias against UNP. Most of the time UNP is not given the last seat but they are placed in the middle. Hence those who speak after UNP, who are mostly those who oppose UNP have a better opportunity to influence the viewers. It should be through a lottery system the seats should be allocated.

It is not the malicious media that is discrediting the Government. It is those MPs who voted against the NCM to protect the biggest thief in the country that is discrediting the Government. It is MPs who are in the Official Opposition and voted to save the Government that is discrediting the Government and the country. It is SLFP MPs who abstained from voting and saved the thief discrediting the Government. This Government is really a shit pit. President should take the responsibility for creating this situation.

Those MPs who saved the most corrupted politician in the country have no right to talk about corruption of others. First clean your own backyard before pointing finger at garbage in other peoples’ backyards!

Tamils victims remained stunned by the fact that the Sri Lankan Government continues to mislead and hoodwink the international community into thinking that they have, and will take responsibility for the numerous crimes committed by them during the Sri Lankan civil war.

    SL continues its deceptive ways.

Member states should uphold its commitment to its values and suspend Sri Lanka from CHOGM until the Government fully implements the recommendations made by the UN HRC Resolution L30/1 (due by March 2019). Failing this, Sri Lanka should be referred to the ICC and for a UN Conducted Referendum for the Tamils to decide their future destiny, to ensure a peaceful, permanent political solution.

Talking about BS when the bond scam was a humongous fraud, one the worst in the world. Only thing is ruppe is not worth even one penny of the american dollar. President is talking economy when three banks and two employee funds are bankrupt and are still under Ranil wickramsinghe. then what about the MCC/IMF supported economic vision and change of the financial regulations, particularly exchange control and credit transactions at the embarking or disemabraking ports/harbours and selling busnesses to tamil/bora private citizens. Those can bank rupt the country. PResident doe snot talk about the govt borrowing from european/american private citizens. President do not talk about why he had to hand over tea estates and lottery board to the out going thief with multiple fraud charges and why president is a very weak president who can not correct his corrupt UNP party and why he had to rehire so many rejected politicians almost everyone has theft from public charges. Now, people are accusing the president too.

I do not think media is that malicious as the politicians or the govt is. Because, they are for money yet they expose the govt to a certain extent. but politicians, Particualry the buddhist president who came from a rural village is anti-buddhist and is corrupt or fradulent or cheating the voters is unbeluevable. We can understand catholic conver Mahinda Rajapakse anglicsn conver RaNIL wickramasinghe. How about buddhist who came from a rural village. He is a typical sinhala fellow. He behaves very weak and not like a leader and he looks bending to everybody and is a part of the corrupt system,. How can buddhists comprehend that. It looks president is avoiding everything. why ? I am wondering whether his only objective is leaving another future president one just like SAJITH who predicts how many UDAGAMS he will build before the next election but has done nothing yet.

Maithripala Sirisena had said I don’t have any debt to any one. but, I have something else and I do not know where I will have to pay it. Even the Car insurance had been paid by the govt. On the other hand, Ranil says he definitely knows he will not go to Baby Jesus or to the Heavens.

That’s right Axcellency, blame the fourth estate for every ill but can you make a scape goat of them? YE has a fat bureaucracy and a set of nincompoops in a media unit. What the heck are they doing to counter the so called adverse publicity. Remember Axcellency bad workmen complain of their tools. Blaming the fourth estate is a clear sign of a dictatorial mindset creeping into the soul. During the previous administration, instead of blaming the fourth estate openly, various goons to attacked the press-personnel resulting even in gruesome murders, and no finality in investigations. People may wonder as to whether YE would follow suit if the fourth estate is not manned with sycophants. YE has less than two years more before the end of the term. Deliver just a few things so that people will not regret voting for you in Jan 2015.

Mr> President: There were two things you are not HONEST about: (1) The “Bond Scam”. When that “Singaporean” Mr. Arjuna Mahendran was appointed, you should have acted like the Head of the Government and rejected it. It was useless telling the Nation (as you did at a TV address) that you told the PM not to do it. After all one of your own Ministers, Mr. Amaraweera was the first to lodge a complaint with the Bribery Commission. You even allowed that same mistake and the “Robbery” to take place the SECOND TIME in March 2015. (2) You cannot deny the undue “Influence” you or and the PM brought to bear on the investigative agents into the mega corruption deals of MR’s regime. Can you deny or plead not GUILTY of not allowing those 14 odd your own Commission Reports being sent to the Parliament till 2018? (3) You allowed a person who was charged in a court of Law for Money Laundering to be appointed as the Minister of Finance. I refer to Mr. RviK. (4) You were well informed of the “Environmental Disasters” that were taking place in the country in the hands of the Ministers and their goons. The most recent was the allocation of land for filling and construction work at Muthurajawela and ultimately because of the Media, you saw for yourself what was happening. All these and MANY MORE “willful” misdoings were brought to light in the Media correctly, in the interest of the country and the public; but you FAILED to ACT in a swift manner as the Head of the State. Now you are CRYING and pass the buck to Media. That audience, you addressed are well informed and knowledgeable of what is happens in your country in general and most importantly and in particular of your Government. In this instant too your “MEDIA GOONS” have let you down INTENTIONALLY in preparing this speech.
