Malik’s U-Turn On Cabinet Portfolio: Declaration Of “Voluntary Exclusion” A Calculated Attempt At Diffusing Criticism?

UNP second-tier MPs and backbenchers have railed against Malik Samarawickrama, a close ally of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, for backtracking on his promise of not accepting a position in the new Cabinet.

Malik Samarawickrama

Samarawickrama announced at the group meeting of the United National Front earlier this week that he would not take up a position in the new Cabinet. Thilak Marapana and D.M. Swaminathan, two other national list MPs of the UNP, also expressed similar views.

Samarawickrama’s remarks earned the appreciation of many UNP backbenchers and relatively young members in the group. Colombo Telegraph learns that after the group meeting, UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra walked up to Samarawickrama and kissed him on the cheek in appreciation of making a “grand sacrifice” for the party.

Their declarations of voluntary exclusion also gave rise to hopes that relatively young members of the ruling camp who played critical roles during the political turmoil would be given Cabinet positions.

Many UNP cabinet members were surprised to see Samarawickrama and Marapana at the Presidential Secretariat this morning. They were particularly shocked about Samarawickrama as he has not played an active role in the UNP camp since the outbreak of the political crisis on October 26.

Samarawickrama, however, managed to include his name in the final list at the last moment and retained his previous ministry. In addition to his previous position as the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Samarawickrema also received an additional position as the Minister of Science and Technology.

“His remark at the parliamentary committee might have been a trick to preempt any outcry against his appointment. Many UNPers were unhappy about Wickremesinghe’s close associates holding sway over affairs of the government. There were also views that national list MPs, such as Samarawickrama, should not hold Cabinet positions. His earlier remarks diffused such sentiments and it allowed the Prime Minister to “smuggle” their names into the list at the last moment,” a source familiar with the matter said.

Don’t they realise only damage and reduce the credibility of Ranil Wickramasinghe beyond the point of any resurrection!

      Ranajan,

what i feel is so called bank bond scam is overstated than it really is..

President himself resounded that the damage made by bond scams is beyond 1000 billions.
If only 10 billions were the loss under Ranil Govt. it is just 1 % . I know even 1 percent should be forcused but why in the same time no high focus is not given to the rest 99% percent.

This became clearer at the time MP Hirunika raised it.
I think without having investigated it since 2007, it is no fair to call it even as mahadawal baenkuwa soara kaema.. that is why may be RANIL is very upset by the issues. I dont think RANIL has ever made it intentionally. It is a system failure..
And it is complex issue so minions should NOT attack RW as if he robbed out the CB on broad day light.

All what i am saying is, this is precalutred propaganda act to tarnish the CLEAN image of Ranil.

        Desperate Sinhalaya,
Whether you like or not now most of the people know Ranil as ‘Maha Benku Hora. I talked to few farmers in Anuradhapura area about this. They have no idea about Bonds. They think Ranil went with his gang to Maha Benkuwa at night and took away the money stacked there.
He is also considered as a traitor by Sinhalayo because of his ardent support for a ‘Rata Kadana Wiwasthawa’. If Ranil contest for the President post, except for few ‘kepuwath kola’ idiots, no other Sinhalayo will vote for him.

That is for sure.. so long their PVT media channels have become spread black media.

We need to focus on truths. Why SIRASA did not utter a single word about 99% bond scam , now very sure to have occured, in the high days of ballige putha Rajapakshe?

Why Derana, Hiru and SIRISA be given that much of power to mislead the nation ?

Please compare all the lies being deliberatey planted in the MIND set of the punnakku eating average masses, what they have been trying to achieve is nothign esle, to mislead them for their political survival.

Why cant we as CITIZENs stand up and file cases against SIRASA parrots fo rtheir one sided news spread ?

We the ones living out of the country but are sensitive with these issuses more than had ever been in the past.

I will meet my lawyers and file a case against SIRASA and other channels to have misled local people by not having telecasted the truths.

Now again, during last few weeks, they 3 channels, louded that RAJAKASHES left SLFP, but today the very same biased media say nothing about that, if they would so, MPs inclu balligie putha Rajakashe would have to leave lanken parliament losing his position.

Why not lankens file cases against these crooks ?

Lankens issue is totally based of FALSHE news spread consistantly being carried out by 3 abusive channels.
We need to work on the laws so that we can stand against these vicious business men:
Being unbiased to any parties, we need to focus on the PEOPLE of this country.

Trumpland’s puppets Bondscam Ranil and his pack of Thieves including Penthouse Ravi, and Avant Guard Marapana, are back to loot the Central Bank of SL and Lanka’s marine, land, and energy resources and sell them to sovereign bond traders.
RW must be impeached for the Bondscam at the Central Bank NOW based on the PCOI Report and investigations. This is the only hope and solution…
Sri lanka needs a general election after passing a law that no one over 65 can contest and banning politicians crossing the house for the highest bidder.
The JVP has completely lost the plot and AKD seems to have been bought by external parties; trying to abolish the Executive Prez. which is the only “check and balance” against Bondscam Ranil and his corrupt Royal college cabaal who works to Trumpland and America First.
Civil society organization must move the courts to impeach Ranil and his economic hit men who looted the Central bank of Sri Lanka and will do so again.

The elephant in the room that explains the return of the same crooks who looted Lanka headed by Bondscam Ranil as Cabinet members is Washington and its Cold War against China in Sri Lanka and the Indian Ocean.
Ranil Wickramasinghe is Trumpland’s puppet and his crooks, Malik, Ravi, Avant Guard Marapona, are back to continue the same neo con, neo liberal economic and US security project to beggar and asset strip Lanka and take it over as a strategic asset in Trump’s Cold War against China in the India Ocean. Ranil’s economic policy is written by MCC and IMF and they also play ethnic and religious identity politics to divide, distract and push the Global 1 percent agenda. Hence, TNA’s embrace of Bondscam Ranil..

We were looking forward to younger Ministers, who had an ear to the ground; and this is what we get!

The three being discussed are all “appointed M.P.s”. I don’t think that they have ever been elected. Marapone’s age is not given in his Wikipedia entry. I remember his current age as 80! At least he was not at Royal college; S. Thomas’. He was forced to resign as Minister, I can’t remember for what. Shades of Ravi Karunanayke, but perhaps his misdemeanor was not as serious.
      .
Swaminathan, greatgrandson of Ponnambalam Arunachalam, Royal College, 73 years.
      .
Malik Samarawickrema is five days younger than his Royal College class-mate Ranil Wickremasinghe. They will both be 70 in March next year.
      .
People must know when to retire; I’m 70 and retired. I do try to be useful, but I know that old guys with some expertise imagine that they are indispensable.
      .
Yes the UNP’s days are numbered. For us it means having to ready ourselves for the return of the barbaric Rajapaksas. Sirisena is a relatively civilised and decent man, who has gone off his nut now.

Is Sirisena the Problem or Ranil the Problem?

      Sirisena’s balls dissolved.

      Ranil’s balls got rotten.

Now we can understand why Sirisena was pissed off at Ranil.

I used to admire Ranil when he was Minster of Industries and I was holding a senior position and close to the Govt at that time. However, since the bond scam and how he continues to keep he friends even after the BOND scam at the expense of young and able UNPers disgust me. His performance in the past 3 years is below average. It is now clear he does not do what the party wants. NOW the seniors in the Exec Comittee MUST force Ranil to remove the national list MPs from the cabinet, Failing cabinet ministers other than those cronies of his, must RESIGN and FORCE him to do what the party wants. UPFA may be correct when they say Ranil is a dictator. I will never vote for him to be PRESIDENT even from the UNP.

    Ranil W and UNP,

So you guys smuggled in those were were not cleared.

So, what is the difference between them, Sirisena and Mahinda?

Those who know Malik for long vouch he is a thorough gentleman. Long before he joined Ranil’s Cabinet he was a wealthy industrialist, who has helped the UNP in many ways. I am aware he helped many youth in his several garment factories.
I am told his offer to be out of the Cabinet is a honourable decision. It may well have been Ranil insisting on him to be within because, I speculate here, he may have felt he was safer with Malik in the Cabinet.

Ranil is sabotaging his govt again. Malik’s declaration of voluntary exclusion was obviously a red herring. And Ranil is simply out of his mind to appoint that thief Ravi K as a minister – again! He is letting down all who stood with him and fought tooth and nail for his reinstatement as PM. Has the circus begun?

First of all, all should chase out Ranil before Sirisena and Mahinda. This man would never learn a lesson. When he is in a difficult situation, and his tail is between his legs, he kneels down in front of all, when all over, he becomes a king, and tremble all. People like Malik, Marapana, John, Jayawickrama, Haleem, Harrison etc are useless lot, instead of them, he should have brought in better people than them.

Arrogance of RW nothing else. Sagala, Malik, Akila…his associates and samanala brigade…This arrogance of RW only pushed away MS back to an alliance with MR, which will be a very strong force (MR/MS) come next elections. Whatever is MR, he is pleasant and has so much peoples skills RW even cannot imagine or dream to have…

During the MR regime only the election commissioner suffered from mental depression. But now because of MS/RW duo 62.5 million people suffer from it.

Ranil never learns things and also he never respects people’s mandate & wishes. How could he turn back on the people who fought bravely to bring him back to power.
How could RK bacame a minister when the whole country opposes him.

We’ve had enough of RW & his circle of crooks. Dear young unp MPs he never appreciate what you do for him. The time has come to put an end to Ranil’s leadership. Act promptly, otherwise this time it will be the end of UNP.

Remember, people have given the last chance to UNP. You hesitate you are doomed.

This is the biggest issue with ranil. When ever he gains power thanks to the hard work of others, this particular clan gets back to work making the party unpopular among unp supporters and floating voters again. I don’t understand the purpose of giving cabinet ministry portfolios to inactive , unpopular and never contesting national list mps like them.
They should give portfolios to people like Rangabandara, Ajith Perera, Fonseka who played some crusual role as well ( if siri had refused these people, unp should have waited and fought like how they made ranil the pm again )
Even hirunika, nalin bandara n mujibar are suitable for cabinet ministries considering the way they fought to get back the government.

If anyone trusts these politicians’ words as reliable its a miscalculation of their sole purpose of coming to parliament.

The sole purpose of coming to parliament is to enjoy the perks and then cannot go with an empty hand and get a kiss from their wife.

Samarawikram got one extra kiss from fair skin lady in front of some other similar gang members and those leade others to expect a kiss is the only outcome of this.

Let Hirunika satisfy others too by offering kisses for not boasting as that will not take cabinet positions.

If Sinhala UNP MPs think that they won the battle they are wrong. The real winners of this fiasco are the White Supremacists who plan to create a Super State and exploit the world for their benefit. They were sitting in the Parliament Gallery and Supreme Court and watching. They do not care damn for democracy or human rights; what they want is to exploit. By saving Ranil and giving him PM post UNP MPs did an irreparable damage to the country. Your children will curse you for that. It is White Supremacists who want devolution of power to weaken the Central Government. They use TNA for that. They will go to any length to prevent a strong leader like Mahinda Rajapakse coming to power. They prefer a puppet like Ranil. At the end both Sinhalayo and Demalu will lose. Once they get what they want, they will dump Demalu.

Malik, Badiuddeen, and Mano Ganeshan played the usual UNP trick again on us. Thus, you started to fool us as the first act of this government.
As Ms Serasinghe pointed out in another article that appears on CT today, the UNP as a political party is now finished. It is not a party that learns from past mistakes. It is a party that thinks the average people are idiots!
Increase your bloody cabinet to 100 and enjoy this short few months like the proverbial crab that swims in the pot before its fire is lit.

Fonseka – not appointed – Reason : Critical of Sira
Range Bandara – not appointed – Reason : Exposed Sira’s plot to buy MPs
SLPF MPs supporting UNP – not appointed – Reason – Only SIra knows, but he was prepared to buy UNP MPs and appoint them

    Ravi K – Appointed – Why ?

Ravi K was the architect of the Bond Scam with Arujun A, as Ravi K wrote the cheques for UNP funded by Arujun A, so they had recover many times over.

Why did Sira appoint him when the commission he appointed found justifiable grounds to satisfy themselves that Ravi K was complicit in the Bond Scam!

    Was Sira a beneficiary too?

    Only time will tell!

This is the mentality of the Elite Royal College Club members. This club led by RW wants to keep the UNP under their control so that they can also resort to corrupt financial deals and cover up one and another.

  • 0
    0

Inreality, if Ranil is honest in doing any of the matters he promised to UNHRC in March 2015 in order to have the OISL original report to be abolished and redrawn the way he wanted, there should have been a ministry to deal with “Human Rights, War Crime, Transitional Justice, Hybrid Special Court & Devolution of power”. Even Deepika’s Department of HRCSL can come under it, instead of being “independent under a lunatic EP”. Then TNA’s nominated MP has to have that Ministry.

It is still not too late. Cabinet is not complete yet. March, 2019 is three months away. Ranil can well do it, instead of waiting to another year and put another show before election, twist, turn around, and blackmail IC with Sinhala Nationalism threats.

On the other side, IC should now be frank as Sinhala governments have not been sincere in curbing the Sinhala Buddhist Nationalism, but pampering more to win the competitive elections, they should help Tamils to go alone.

RW better understand that we the people are not going to tolerate nepotism and loyalty to mates in appointing cabinet ministers. Still supressing the more talented young mps from getting promoted has been the hallmark of RW, not interested in the country but only holding on to power. Definitely time for a change in the unp leadership. It was so clear that the fossils and backdoor national list mps expiry dates had long expired and their silence and lack of active engagement in the recent constitutional coup does not in anyway justify giving them cabinet positions. Eran, Ajith, Harsha, Hirunika, Sujewa not being promoted reinforces the immoral and power hungry and selfish character of this prick RW. He together with these old farts also including JP, JA, Kiriella, national list scoundrels and Arjuna R hardly spoke and displayed their lack of leadership and ability to govern. Not only will the unp be voted out at the next election but the country will be most affected by this idiotic and stubborn behaviour of RW. Not too late even now to get these shithead ministers to resign and promote the young guys who will be the future leaders who are capable and will win the respect of the people. RW does not have the courage or integrity to tell the gamarala to f… Off in making cabinet appointments. SF and Range Bandara are two people we need to have as ministers. Allowing the constitutional robber president to dictate terms is intolerable and in God’s name RW, please have some decency and love for the country and immediately hand over the leadership of the party to Sajith. We will not be voting for unp if you are going to contest the next election as prez or pm.

Sharmini Serasinghe, well written. It is because of the rivalry between Ranil and Maithiripala this political turmoil has cropped up. This is why, time and again I suggested that a National Government is a bust at this crucial hour. Had Ranil formed a Cabinet that includes Mangala Samaraweera, Malik Samarawickrema, Tilak Marapana, D.M.Swaminathan, Sampanthan, Sumanthiran, Luxman Kiriella that consists of 15 to 18 Ministers, the true colours of Maithiripala and Mahinda would be exposed to the people. Ranil missed a golden opportunity. Remember there are some unqualified and uncultured Ministers in the Cabinet who will sabotage Ranil. Ministers so appointed should country conscious and self-conscious with corrupt mind.

The damage done by Ranil to the country and the UNP is beyond calculation.

When Chandrika wanted to drop the presidency Ranil thought he could one day become president and pulled the rug under her. This is just one example of thousands of other criminal acts which damaged the country very much and also brought the UNP vote bank from about 45% to 25%.

Part of our defeated culture is that UNP cannot do away with Ranil. Because the alternative is cardboard Tarzen Sajith Premadasa whose speeches sound so phoney. Ranil can justify his losing character by pointing to the jokers around him in the UNP who make him look good.

. So they prefer to stay with the known loser Ranil.

Malik is a classmate of Ranil and a known operator. He is the president of the UNP while Ranil is the leader ! Why don’t they appoint their class teacher as the patron of the UNP ? Ravi, Kabir, Harsha, Ajit were part of the bond scam white-washers.

Same with SLFP. For more than 50 years it had to be a Bandaranayake. See what a loser and a mediocrity Chandrika is !

Now they are stuck with criminal Rajapakse family.Father to brother or son it will go. The Muslim congress has had Hakeem for nearly 30 years. The Communist party has DEW who is more dead than alive. It goes on , the latest is that Senanayake joke who is a yo-yo.

Why are Samarawickreme, Kabir Hashim and Ravi K who are all suspected of helping themselves to public funds being appointed for Cabinet Positions. The people who fought MS and MR in the last 50days are all people who supported the UNF in 2015 and fought for the UNP to be reinstated into power in 2018. Are their voices now going to be ignored???

RW must know that he too is on borrowed time before the people turn against. He must make immediate changes for the future of the country
