Missing Ingredients In Presidential Cuisine

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s opening address to a parliament noted for its mediocre talent and disrespect to norms and values of a national legislature had nothing to reassure the nation that the next three years of the regime would be anything better than the last two. The behaviour of the members is symptomatic of the nation’s descent to moral bankruptcy and societal chaos. The President’s much awaited address was of no relevance to the prevailing economic disaster, but filled with bravados on how determined is he to turn the country greener and eco-friendly and how successful the regime is in protecting the national interest amid conflicting pressures from India, China and the West. As usual there were plenty of grand promises about distant prosperity without any mention about measures to tackle the immediate crisis that is suffocating the nation. There were also untruths about the regime’s human rights record. For example, GR claimed that he never trampled upon anybody’s human rights during the last two years. If so, what was trampled when Muslims were forced to cremate their Covid-dead bodies? UNHCR has a catalogue of such violations if the President only cared to read its reports.

However, there were two vital ingredients missing in the president’s cuisine: sustainable remedial measures to revive the economy from its immediate crisis and the national question. To take the second first, without even mentioning that subject GR was audacious in urging law makers from north and east to support his development projects. This in other words was regurgitation of what he said two years ago that the solution to reconciliation was not devolution of power but economic development. One cannot build a nation by keeping almost one third of its population disconnected and disgruntled with a regime that is pandering to the vile sentiments of Buddhist majoritarianism. One would have thought that after his apologies for past mistakes there would be some positive signals in that speech pointing to a change of direction and a new resolve to build a united Sri Lanka by guaranteeing all its citizens equal rights and obligations. Sadly, it was not there. No wonder that the leader of TNA, Mr. Sampanthan, was reported to have told the Minister of Finance, Basil Rajapaksa, that the President’s address was “rubbish”, and that an embarrassed minister cut short the dialogue, thanked the leader and quickly disappeared from the scene. In summary, the driving spirit behind GR’s address was not about the economy or nation building, but about the regime’s political future.

On the second, enough has been said. In summary, Sri Lanka is in an unparallel economic mess. Long and winding queues in front of retail outlets for cooking gas, food items, building materials and in fact for anything and everything, has sadly become a monotonous scene to watch daily. Power cuts, gas cylinder explosions and loss of income and employment add to the agony. On top of all this is the spread of Omicron. Even one meal a day is becoming a luxury for many individuals, and economic deprivation is driving the desperados to test their fortunes in crimes and other evils. This was not the Sri Lanka two years ago.

The treasury is running dry of foreign reserves. Central Bank’s Chief, Ajith Nivard Cabraal with his fat pension and cabinet status, goes on printing money paying two hoots to its impact on inflation. The amount of treasury bills held by the bank has exceeded a couple of trillions of rupees. Food inflation today stands at 22%, according to one source. Of the $1.6 billion left in foreign reserves Cabraal used $500 million to pay off Sovereign Bonds. Borrowing from friends and neighbours to replenish the reserve stock is the name of Cabraal’s game. While he assures the President and hoodwinks the public on the long-term success of his novel strategy, international credit agencies had downgraded the country’s risk level sending alarm signals to private investors. While Cabraal expects the economy to grow by 5%, World Bank expects it to drop to 2.1% in 2022 from 3.1% last year, and predicts income per capita also to contract by 2% while all other Asian nations would experience a rise. Does one need any more evidence to show the depth of the crisis?

While the economy is on life support the growing political disunity within the ruling coalition and plummeting popularity of the regime is turning GR’s attention towards planning for political survival. With all criticisms and inuendoes about the government from within the coalition there is no way that it would break up soon because the junior partners face too much to lose from breaking away. However, it is not the quibbles in the coalition, but the ever-growing discontent of the populace that should be far more worrying to the President and his regime. Behind all those vacuous statements in that address GR is openly strengthening his support base, the triple M: military, monks and militants. The common denominator of all three is Buddhism, and GR is openly advocating that he is a President elected by the Buddhists, for the Buddhists and of Buddhists. This why the national question is totally ignored in his address. Some of his recent measures such as the appointment of a militant monk to head the controversial OCOL task force, appointing another less known monk to the Chancellorship of a national university amid protests from academics and graduands, encouraging the monks at Kuragala monastery in Ratnapura to expand and rebuild that precinct with no concern at all to its adverse impact on the adjacent Muslim Sufi shrine and feelings of its patrons, and in addition to all this, his Prime Minister’s announcement to make Nainativu a suddhabumi are all to strengthen GR’s credentials as the President only to Buddhists. This is a sure recipe for a chaotic nation in the future.

His address showed no interest in solving the national issue and nation building. It was in short, an endorsement of what a Catholic prelate said recently that the moral conscience is dead in Sri Lanka.

………”GR claimed that he never trampled upon anybody’s human rights during the last two years. If so, what was trampled when Muslims were forced to cremate their Covid-dead bodies? UNHCR has a catalogue of such violations if the President only cared to read its reports.”……
Well a recent UN official praised him on his green agricultural policy along with so many foreign dignitaries who visited SL recently and even promised help. Then early this week, Lord Ahmed tweeted : https://twitter.com/tariqahmadbt/status/1484288743880155136?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Sri Lanka claims Lord Ahmad praised Rajapaksa over ‘progress on human rights’

Naturally. Sri Lanka is now the blue-print of the Green Revolution. No other country dared to implement such a drastic policy knowing the impacts on their economy and people. But now that Sri Lanka has done it, they can learn well for their countries. The sufferings of our people have been disregarded, yet again. Not only the Green Revolution, the prototype of supra-capitalism is also being experiment with in Sri Lanka.

Oh yeah, when Muslim suspects are released on bail, Lord Tariq Ahmed thinks the human rights in Sri Lanka are protected under the Rajapaksa government while totally disregarding that a number of Sinhalese people are detained in remand custody for flimsy reasons. For example, 1. Chairman of the Information Technology Society of Sri Lanka (ITSSL) Rajeev Yasiru Kuruwitage Mathew was arrested for sharing a news article that claimed that several government websites were hacked. 2. Journalist Keerthi Tennakoon was arrested for warning the Indian Embassy in Colombo of a possible terrorist attack. They both have filed fundamental rights cases.
Maybe Gotabhaya’s ‘surprise visit’ to Kurugala ancient Buddhist sacred site a few days ago has something to do with the visit of Lord Ahmed. I am sure the Muslim community is happy with Gotabhaya building a massive structure resembling the Mecca in Kurugala committing unforgivable sacrilege to the ancient Buddhist site.

        .
I sincerely feel that the sudden switch to Organic farming was a calculated move to scuttle our agricultural sector.
        .
Under the Mara and Gota regimes we have lost out on garment production, Tea production, killed Srilankan airlines, and now with the forex rate pegging,

Lest leave out the irreparable damage they have caused by:

        2. systematic spread and institutionalising of corruption
        3. politicising and weaponising Buddhism
        4. stealing from every possible means
        5. carting the loot to foreign countries for safekeeping

This is what the Tamil Guardian says:

“Sri Lanka’s official Presidential Media Division claimed the visiting British minister praised president Gotabaya Rajapaksa over his regime’s supposed “progress” on human rights issues, after the pair met in Colombo earlier today.
“Sri Lanka’s progress over human rights highly commendable,” read the headline of the official report,……………”

How can any one be sure that, the Presidential Media Division’s “claim”, is exactly what Lord Ahmad said?

        Dear Muhandiram,
Yes I agree, to the extent that no one is sure unless a full analysis is done in this age of electronic messaging. However, only thing is that the British HC nor Lord Tariq have rebutted these claims, especially the Prez Media Release, even if they ignore Tamil Guardian as not worthy of rebuttal.

          0

          Dear M V

          Tks. U r right. There is no rebuttal from the British HC. This news has also been carried in the Main Media with the Island carrying it yesterday, the 22nd, with the caption;

“Lord Ahmad commend Lanka’s progress on human rights front: President’s Media Division”.
          See: https://island.lk/lord-ahmad-commend-lankas-progress-on-human-rights-front-presidents-media-division/

Something Really strange about Lord Tarik Ahmad’s alleged statement and the silence of the British HC when the Brits have accused Sri Lankan Authorities, time and again, about Human Rights Violations and have been in the forefront of several Resolutions against Sri Lanka in the UN Human Rights Council.

The UN HRC is going to meet shortly and lets see what the Brits are going to do.

In the meantime, lets wait and see whether the Tamil politicians and Muslim community leaders will take any action on this matter.

      .
“Well a recent UN official praised him on his green agricultural policy along with so many foreign dignitaries “

But the truth is he made him a world’s number one ” laughing stock”:
      .
Entire world incl Germany, Australia and Canada knew that Gota-Baya “simplenton” to srilanken and world politics was joking.

Our little ones would be happy their parents would touch the sky, but the problem is whether they fullfill such promises ?
      .
All what GR-MR have done under current govt are just jokes. Had the bugger et al repsect – at least WHO guidelines regarding containment of the virus, lots of out of those went dying would have been living today. My afther died without him being rihgly jabbed with the vaccine, at th etime, ballige puthas were playing with PIRITH noole and dhammikya paniya. How many others in that age groups fell dead ?
      .
Today they make every effort to paint the picture that GR did a great job regarding VACCINATION across the country, but how can he be that proud of it ? :::::: Universitiy dons for some HIDDEN reasons are in ternally dead mode….
      .

A kingdom known as the “Licchavi” existed in the Hambanthota region of the island approximately 2600 years ago. They had a system that I believe is worth emulating even today. They had a democracy, albeit a non-party one. Each member of Parliament was elected. The Parliament was composed of 9 members, including the president (Raja), vice-president (Upa-Raja), chancellor of the exchequer (Bhandagarika), defence minister (Senpathi) and orinary members. The Licchavi Parliament was called the “Santhagara”. Since the opposition did not constantly challenge the ruling party, the system was much more peaceful and productive.

The government is always harping about the Unity, Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity of the country. But it is only serious and sincere about the latter two concepts whereas the term ‘Unity’ serves merely as a catchphrase. The government should realize that if it does not lay sufficient emphasis on UNITY, the day will come soon when it will lose both its Sovereignty and Territorial Integrity as a consequence, and that will be perceived as a terrible calamity by the majority population.

What I suggest is that a new, dedicated Ministry of National Unity be established as a priority to address all the problems caused by the lack of Unity in the country. There is no need to increase the number of ministries if one of the less important ministries is amalgamated with another compatible ministry to make way for this one. After going downhill for almost 73 years due to the lack of Unity, an effective Ministry of National Unity should strike one as an imperative need to stop the rot.

People and parties with complaints and grievances, especially the minorities, can go this ministry to have their issues addressed. The ministry should have adequate power to deal with and solve their problems as none of the present institutions have the authority or backbone to offer satisfactory remedies. Indeed, they are a big joke though not funny!

      Captain Morgan,
“The government should realize that if it does not lay sufficient emphasis on UNITY,..”

What do you expect the Government to do to keep Unity when Tamil politicians keep on making racist statements like ‘Sinhalayo are not welcome in the North’, ‘Cannot build temples and Buddha statues in the North’, Tamilized the name of Sinhala King Devanampiyatissa to Devanampiyatheesan and taking legal action to stop renovation of temples in the North.

It is hard as citizens of this nation, to go through such hardship, struggle with the blunders made by this corrupt family, have no easy access to basic needs like gas and food, and deal with constantly soaring prices, while knowing fully well that this family, including their cronies, are living the good life, traveling abroad, eating well at top hotels, and partying like there is no tomorrow. They fiddle while Rome is burning, and thumb their noses at those who made the biggest mistake by voting for them.

This speech is nothing but a cover story for the corruption and failed policies we have experienced, and gone through, ever since these crooks took over our country. A banana republic run by one corrupt and unethical family.

Is eradicating Tamil terrorists who massacred people in this country for three decades using suicide bombers, claymore bombs, chemical weapons, AK47s; grabbed Tamil children and recruited them as child soldiers; kept about 300,000 innocent Tamil civilians as a human shield and shot at those who tried to escape; brutally assassinated 600 Sinhala Police Officers who surrendered; hacked to death 32 ‘Samanera’ monks who were going in a pilgrimage an unethical thing?

Is restoring peace denied to people in this country for three decades by Tamil terrorists an unethical thing?

The shoplifter who stole baby products from a super market & slitting his own throat when cornered indicates a desperate man, ashamed of his deed in front of his friends & relatives. This is not the action of a habitual shoplifter but desperation & inability to support a family. His crime & loss of life reflects directly on the failings of the current regime. Petty thefts, burglary, & even muggings, are to be expected when desperation becomes acute. I wonder how many are contemplating suicide in these circumstances. Are we still believing in ‘vistas of splendour & prosperity’?

We are already a Lebanon & another 3 years under this regime, we are likely to be another Afghanistan with a Buddhist Taliban.

Each and every citizen knows, the head of the nation, Gotabaya Rajapakse, is a murderer at best; a serial-killer at worst.

Electing a killer as the leader and expecting him to do wonders …………. tells a lot about the citizens of the country.

No need for learned tomes ……… and Proustian prose to say simple truths …………. unless it helps to avoid facing the truth …………..

Are we ready to face the truth?

I write this comment to express my strongest opposition to the President and the Army Commander for committing unforgivable sacrilege to Kurugala Buddhist sacred site by building a massive concrete structure depicting the Holy Shrine Mecca. The moment I saw the picture of this cement structure in ‘Ada’ newspaper and elsewhere, I remembered similar pictures in Mecca.
The motive is clear. Gotabhaya wanted to erase any traces of Buddhist ancestry in Kurugala. When travellers publish pictures of Kurugala, the new structure built by the military will dominate the entire image and the ancient sacred stupa on the top of the rock will be oblivion and forgotten. The ‘mini-Mecca’ is built in such a way that in a few years time, Kurugala will entirely lose its Buddhist heritage appeal.
I see a pattern of instances where there is a heinous motive to erase the Buddhist heritage under the guise of restoration of ancient Buddhist temples and stupas.

The Rajapaksa style ‘BLING-BLING BUDDHISM’ is destroying Theravada Buddhist traditions in Sri Lanka.
The ceremony that was held in Kurugala was undoubtedly organized by a non-Buddhist to insult Maha Sangha and Sinhalese Buddhist traditions & customs.
When looking for pictures of the ceremony, I encountered the following website that published a series of heart rendering pictures that were not seen in any other media.
      https://www.tamilguardian.com/content/rajapaksa-pays-surprise-visit-restored-buddhist-stupa-nearby-mosque-remains-under-threat
Sri Lanka is the only country that practiced Theravada Buddhism in its purest form coupled with Buddhist rituals, rites, customs and traditions that are unique to Sinhalese Buddhists, which promote simplicity, practicality and sensibility.
The manner in which the ceremony was held in Kurugala; red carpets and helicopter flower-showers, etc are totally opposite of Buddhism. I also remember seeing an oversized coronation style red-velvet finish chair and a red velvet foot stool for the Chief Incumbent of the monastery. Moreover, it is the tradition of Buddhists to lay a while cloth that covers the entire chair for Buddhist monks. The deliberate attempt to insult and devalue Maha Sangha is apparent with the use of barest minimum white cloths to scantily cover the chairs where Buddhist monks were supposed to sit.

There has been a controversy surrounding Kurugala, and I wish to place on record that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO MUSLIM HERITAGE IN KURUGALA.
The controversy of ‘Makkama’ as Mecca started by the British Archaeological Commissioner
H.C.P. Bell when he misconstrued Sinhalese Paddy Threshing Folklore Songs. E.g. මක්කම සිරිපාද උසට – සමනල සිරිපාද උසට – ඉහල වෙලේ තිබෙන බැතත් – පහල වෙලේ තිබෙන බැතත් – ඇද පුරවන් මේ කමතට. (May the paddy in the upper fields, May the paddy in the lower fields, Be drawn to fill this Threshing Floor, As high as MAKKAMA’S sacred footprint, As high as Samanala’s sacred footprint.)
HCP Bell erroneously attributed ‘Makkama’ to Mecca whereas ‘Makkama’ is an area in Sri Lanka which is even mentioned in the Sinhalese chronicle ‘Nampotha’.
In the ancient Sinhalese Yakkha era, there had been a massive handloom industry in today’s North-Western Province.
The Sinhala word ‘Makkam’ මක්කම් means weaving looms. Similarly, ‘Geththam’ means knitting, ‘Athkam’ means handicraft, ‘Liyakam’ means intricate designs.
The story that there is a tunnel from Kurugala to ‘Makkama’ HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MECCA.
‘Makkama Maha Vehera’ is today’s ‘Makulana Rajamaha Viharaya’ as shown on ‘Yathartha’ Youtube Channel by Mr. Janith Harsha.

I will tell you the basic Buddhism I understand.
I say, Sri Lanka DOES NOT NEED any more stupas.
Our Sinhalese Buddhist ancestors have built thousands of Viharas, stupas, rock temples, cave temples and forest monasteries. Then, there are thousands of unexplored Buddhist archeological sites.
The millions of rupees spent on building/restoring stupas could be used on those who are in need of food. Over 800 victims of gas explosions have been waiting for compensation for months. Another hundreds of thousands of paddy farmers are waiting for compensation for crop failure. At least, low-cost ‘Thriposha’ nutri-packs could have been distributed among pregnant women and children. One person has travelled 6km to buy milk powder. Desperate people have started stealing and when they get caught, kill themselves. There are stories about mothers skipping meals so that their children can eat. Over 60% of the population suffer from food insecurity.
‘Kurugala’ extravagance implies that building/restoring stupas is another multi-million racket of the Rajapaksas.

Dan sepada. Stop whining. Reminds me of DPK/ N.Korea. No food, fuel $ and farming for survival but the ” Rajapaksas show must go on “
I guess the 6.9 million didn’t know the difference between Hitler and Kim Family.

Rajapaksas are going to the brink of the country to further destruction and leave abroad with all their frauded wealth within the next three years. That is why Gabralla was appointed second time to the Central Bank to perform the faithful Cabraa’s job( ie. broker ) as what he executed during the fall of Mahinda’s presidency by end of 2015 . They know very well that most of the people who voted for them to power are angry against them due to prevailing shortages of food items, electricity, Gas, etc with rising prices together with the Covid crisis.
