MoD Starts Controlling Islamic Thought

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

“Please be informed”, says a notice from the Deputy Director of Customs, “that from today (05.03.2021) onwards, any Islamic religious books brought into the country should be released only on approval from Ministry of Defence”. In other words, and henceforth, only the Ministry of Defence (MoD), which is under President NGR, and not any institute of scholars would decide on what to read and not to read about Islam. This notice, when taken together with NGR’s public resolve not to allow Islamic fundamentalism to re-emerge, during his latest village circuit session in Kiribewa, Kurunegala, illustrate the regime’s preparedness to use thought control as a weapon to destroy any dissent from Muslims. This is exactly what the Chinese are doing with Uyghur Muslims.  In the name of modernization, Uyghurs are almost imprisoned inside hundreds of camps and are systematically brainwashed to eradicate any remnants of thought and practice of Islam from their memory. It is unadulterated brainwashing.

In Sri Lanka, the idea of brainwashing Muslims in the name of cleansing them of fundamentalist Islam was advocated by a few hardline Buddhist monks even before NGR came to power, and during the dying days of Yahapalana regime. Perhaps, the same monks, some of whom are now behaving like Rasputin(s) inside the Presidential House, are now urging NGR to take action along that line. The selectively published report of the Presidential Commission on the Easter massacre has obviously prompted this action. It is also significant that this decision to control reading materials on Islam comes immediately after the defeat suffered by Buddhist supremacists over the issue of Muslim burials.  It only shows that they have a stack of measures in their arsenal, which they are prepared to use one after another sadistically to harass and inflict pain on the Muslim community, and to plunder its inalienable human rights. Seeking knowledge from anywhere is an inalienable right of any human being, let alone a Muslim.

Censorship creates underground markets for the censored. Is NGR going to send his soldiers to search every nook and cranny looking for contraband books and writings on Islam? Is this possible in this digital age? Even if it is possible, is that the way to develop rational thinking amongst growing generations of young men and women in this country? How can one be critical of a particular argument or philosophy on any subject, without first studying that original argument and philosophy? Ideas, however dangerous they may be, have to be countered with better ideas, and that is how knowledge grows in a society. But better ideas cannot develop if access to existing knowledge is denied. A military minded NGR has got hold of the wrong end of the stick to create his virtuous society.

Islam is a flourishing industry today. Apart from its pure religious side, there are other areas of Islam that deal with multiple branches of knowledge, such as politics, economics, medicine, science, art and architecture, and so on. In every branch there are conservative ideas and radical ideas. The number of publications on these and in various languages run into at least dozens a day. Does NGR’s MoD have a panel of scholars or experts on branches of Islamic knowledge to weed out the undesirable and allow the preferred to enter? Or is it going to be a blanket ban on any book that carries the name Islam on its cover? Even the Holy Quran for that matter is the subject of multiple interpretations. How does one carry out a comparative study of these interpretations if some of them are banned from entering the country?

In my own personal library, there are hundreds of books and journals of which some advocate very orthodox views on Islam, while others counter them. I want to donate the whole lot to one of the university libraries in Sri Lanka. Now it becomes impossible, because the receivers would be sent from pillar to post to get them cleared by MoD.

Obviously, book banning is NGR’s initial step in controlling Islamic thought and brainwashing of Muslims. This would be followed by taking control of madrasa teaching and monitoring sermons in mosques, before banning ultimately, at least sections of the Quran itself. These are items in the supremacists’ Islamophobic agenda. After the battle over burials was won, a second front has opened, and Muslim political leaders once again are caught on the hop. For decades, local Muslim intellectuals and thinkers had been crying for reforms in religious education and personal laws, and they were calling for behavioural changes in the community to avoid a clash of fundamentalisms. All Muslim political parties and the ACJU ignored their call. Today Buddhist supremacist fundamentalism is on a war path against Islam.  How to confront?

Once again, the fight against NGR’s ukase to impose selective ban on Islamic books has to be confronted locally as well as internationally. Locally, Muslims must join hands with other democratic forces and make it a multi-ethnic and multi-religious protest. There are strong democratic voices amongst Buddhists, Christians, and Hindus that have to be tapped by Muslims. Muslims cannot win any battle on their own, and they should join others as citizens of this country rather than Muslims of this country. Internationally of course, their protest voice it should reach organizations like UNHCR.

    Thoughts or beliefs ?

Thinking should be free, unbiased, uninfluenced.

Belief ,on the other hand is the religion you were accidently born into, and thereafter you fanatically advocate.

    Two different things .

“Muslims cannot win any battle on their own, and they should join others as CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY rather than MUSLIMS OF THIS COUNTRY”. (My emphasis)
    .
    I agree with you 1000%
    .
But try telling that to the obtuse, intransigent members of your community who have been brainwashed into believing that it is their basic, human right to be MUSLIMS FIRST and that they should therefore be granted unfettered freedom to indulge in all their ‘rights’ as a Muslim, even at the expense of trampling the rights of the other communities.
    .
Here’s a simple test, Haji Ameer Ali
    .
Ask any citizen of Sri Lanka who belongs to the Islamic faith, whether he/she perceives himself / herself as a ‘Muslim Sri Lankan’ or a ‘Sri Lankan Muslim’. Over 99% will choose the latter description. These persons think of themselves as ‘Muslims’ first and not as citizens of Sri Lanka first.
    .
As the Buddha said : “The mind is everything. The way one thinks, one becomes”
Therefore unless one can think of oneself primarily as a ‘Sri Lankan’, one can never ‘become’ a Sri Lankan.

“Does Saudi Arabia allow Buddhist books into the country?”

Does Sri Lanka allow people with Tattooed Budda’s image on their body?
Does Sri Lanka allow people to bring towels printed with Buddha’s image?
Does Sri Lanka allow people to wear saris printed with Buddha images?
On the other hand your functionaries and politicians are involved in drugs/kancha smuggling.

What is the purpose of letting people of this island having numerous Buddhist books while your saffron clad thugs continue to discourage them to practice Buddhism?
Buddhism which is enshrined in the constitution did not save this country from wars, pandemics, crooks, bomb blasts, riots, frauds, ….. Why waste time space…. ?
      Whom are you kidding?

“You guys are misusing our democracy.”

You should direct this question not at Dr. Ameer Ali but at politically motivated crooks and saffron thugs.

This is an absolutely terrible idea. These people have no right to ban text bacuase they suspect it to teach something that goes agains their supremacist ideas ! I am so concerned with what is going on, are all buddhists in support of oppressing Muslims, Christians and Tamils like this ?
    .
Was it not enough to cause so much pain and suffering to two communities over the racist burial issue ? Is this how all buddhists feel or just the extremist buddhists ??
    .
There is no hope for this country down this road. The only hope is for the international community to take stern action against such violators of human rights and minority rights.

Hahahahahahahaha the sinhala buddhist extremists have killed over 300K innocent tamils and denied the basic rights of burial for Christians and Muslims and a shameless extremist buddhist such as yourself has the audacity to c!aim it’s the minorities that are violating majority rights ??
        .
This sad ideology is what is always refer to as the “sinhala beggar ideology”. This ideology taught to sinhala buddhists by their monks and politicians that even though the constitution literally unfairly favours them that they should think that they are oppressed and they should not work hard and things should be handed to them for free. This is why so long as these monks are allowed to talk to young people this country will never develop.

      @SL -Citizen.
Ban and Monitor are two different meanings .
Most countries Monitor not just so called Religous texts of all religions , including leaflets , even monitor Sermons and it is done by A policeman and covers all religions .

As long as the text has no terror ideologies &.promotes piety and peace , no one can ban any Religous books.
So without jumping the gun in all panic , let us see what the Muslim Politicians on both sides and religious scholars have to say and let them discuss with the government to clarify what kind of text would be considered offensive and work towards it .

Even Malaysia being a Muslim majority state has strict rules on extremism and degrading any religion while Pork ,Alchohal and gambling is fully legal and only forbidden to Muslims , not just Malaysians but even Muslim foreigners.
A popular Singaporean female was Cained in Malaysia for drinking beer and Singapore refused to interfere and stoodby Malaysia endorsing their right of rule.

You know why this is done ?
Now the Buddhist clergy don’t follow Buddhism, they follow Sinhala Mithyadrushti in the name of Buddhism. The monks are against the born again Buddhist and it’s revival.. So this is a step to block Buddhist revival. They can’t do it at once.. So minorities first…

Also he is following the Chinese community party ideology, and genocide the minorities in China. Basil Rajapakse once said that they like to follow the China model of governing, rather than the Western democratic model.

Control of material that can fuel fundamentalism has been the aim of many western governments although the radicalisation of Muslims was largely due to Western meddling and war-mongering in the Mid East. Sri Lanka should promote freedom of expression for adults. However it should strictly control the brainwashing of children in religious fervour. Often, children thus brainwashed, are never allowed free thought or opportunity to imbibe in all those “normal” childhood activities that you and I have enjoyed in our lives. When they eventually become adults, all they know is what was indoctrinated and instilled by force, and is potentially hazardous. Therein lies the line where governments must act responsibly.

SOMA – non Muslims in SL gave the option to the SL muslim community and waited hoping they can live like normal minority

        1. Eastern Muslims became very radicalized.
        2. They started to control all SL Muslims – took over and over-powered Galle (Southern Muslims) and Bhora’s , Malays..etc.
        3. They started to get money from Saudi, Qatar and Turkey etc..
        4. Started to name the roads in Arabic
        5. Build a Sharia University.
        6. Brought swords and kept in Mosque..
        7. Started to change the dress to burqa and plant date palms..etc..

NOW SL Singhala and others will enforce the laws like in European countries.. and impose rule as your community did not self regulate….

MMDA change, Burqa Ban, Control mulla’s coming into SL.., Books to be controlled..

Mate I couldn’t agree more. We should stop these monks teaching buddhist children that they are oppressed by minorities even though the constitution unfairly favours them, we should stop these monks teaching buddhist girls that it’s ok to sleep with animals as their great great great grandmother did, we should stop these histories teaching buddhist children it’s ok to have 100s of mistresses as their past kings did.
      .
If the majority are poisoned by such corrupt ideologies then this country will never develop. By stopping these problematic teaching will this country develop.

I disagree with the writer’s terminology.
There is no single branch of Islam that can be endorsed as Islamic Thought exclusively.
There are only Schools of Thoughts among many branches of Islam,
They are niether of God’s or the Prophet’s and not revelation, but belongs to the Scholars who established them.
However Schools of Thoughts are very important and are accepted as legitimate in Islam.
Which makes Islam a faith of democracy.
Schools of Thoughts becomes a threat and needs to be monitored or banned if
It’s Creed ( Aqeeda) promotes an ideology of seclution , hate , sedation undermining a legally appointed government, targeting other Muslims and declaring apostasy against any Muslim who questions and detache himself from a School of Thought, violence against those who have given up Islam or violence against those who are not Muslims, belonging to other beliefs and religions
Only the Quran and Hadees of Sunnis and Hadees of Shias ( no official confirmation of Shias present in Sri Lanka) , The Hadees of Ismaili Kojas, Ismaili Borhas and Ahmedyas are considered officially none violent.
New splinter Islamic groups Creed ( aka in Arabic Aqeeda) needs scrutiny ,why be so upset if the books of The creeds are in harmony with the fundation and core belief of Islam , which is Peace ?

To anyone reading what this fool has written, understand it’s complete garbage and literally none of it is true. You can learn about the truth structure of Islam just by a quick Google search (which will back up my claim what this guy has written is garbage). This guy is just regurgitating what some anti muslim (probably another misinformed sinhala extremist) has told him. You can’t help such people who live in their own anti muslim echo chambers and done hear any opposing views. Sad people.

If Muslims in Sri Lanka are unable to normalise themselves, then it’s MoD’s job to normalise Muslims. Unfortunately it took more than 250 innocent lives to wake up the authorities from their deep slumber. MoD must keep an eye on Muslim hate preachers and especially on their politicians.
    /
Remember early Sinhalese before 1952 had never allowed Islam in Sri Lanka. It was British who allowed their northwest Indian Muslim subjects to build the first mosques in Colombo and Kandy in the early 1900s. After heavy defeat in 1803 to Kandyan army, British brought Indian Muslims to Kanyan provinces to spy on Sinhalese. (Long story)
    /
With the availably of sophisticated software these days, extremist materials on digital form can easily be tracked.

“normalize themselves” uhh what ?? What does that even mean ?? So racist bigots like you get triggered when you see a Muslim with a beard or a hijab ?? Well that’s a problem of the insecurities of the racist bigots, not a problem of Muslims. What’s next ? Nuns and chruch father’s can’t wear their religious clothes because it upsets you insecure bigots ?? Lol get lost.

    Dear Dr AA

I remember the days you argued for the Tamil and Muslim Ghetto parties join hands together with the JVP to create a credible party (not sure what type of Manifesto you had in mind) for this makeup.

Then you were writing Hon Imran Khan and even our own Ministers happened to have their faith as Muslims should think like you without an iota of thought what that means to the rest of the cituizenary in our Nation. Basically it seems our life will revolve around various religious thoughts over and beyond the Law of the land etc.

Looking back at the history I can see how you all hiding behind the various religions to create all that is wrong with the world…look no further we have that now BJP next door talking through their backside.

Please do not make our life miserable as you have already divided our communities enough. Time we should ban religious discussions in public altogether (as you know I am promotor of Sinhala only act and no state religion for a better united Sri Lanka) we got it all flipped the wrong way around by the blind leading the blind….time we depart the world without infecting the next generation…any action by our GoSL that prevents such events should be supported.

The reason you are living and enjoying life abroad in western societies is because they follow the above concept..one language but religions are a private business..in the Middle East they follow by dictatorships an entirely different concept.

Sri Lanka has her own makeup and anyone trying to change will only destroy her….she is good as she is am surprised you do not see that….all the causes have effects..we just been through a huge round one shouldn’t repeat.

    Dr Amir Ali,

All Tamils please listen to this gem from Dr Amir Ali.

“ Locally, Muslims must join hands with other democratic forces and make it a multi-ethnic and multi-religious protest. There are strong democratic voices amongst Buddhists, Christians, and Hindus that have to be tapped by Muslims. Muslims cannot win any battle on their own, and they should join others as citizens of this country rather than Muslims of this country. “
This is valid not only for Muslims, but to Tamils as well, even to Sinhalease.

If all the democratic voices are mobilized, then even the democratic forces could become majority, It is difficult, but not an impossible dream.

      Dear S

She was all that in 70’s until JVP and FP/TC/TULF decided otherwise now the Muslim Ghetto makers joined in…..we were happy then and now we need to go by the Ghetto conditions into the same…is not possible.

Therefore it is for the ghetto makers to fix what they have broken……please give us the country back the way she was please…we were shaping her just fine then…a beautiful Nation on her mindful journey navigating through a hostile Cold War period and the added drama with the Indians/Pakistanis/China and Bangladesh wars to make it even more difficult for us yet still leading everyone else…and Jaffna people voted out many unwanted useless and irrelevant politics in 1970 too as this was their decision collectively not for others to impose….the consequences are starring at the ignorant….my Fathers school say…”be honest to yourself” on the walls literally to date.
