Muslim Politics & Culture: A Disturbing Symbiosis

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Since 1980s when Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) entered the country’s political arena Muslim politics and Muslim culture began to develop a symbiotic relationship to strengthen the community’s identity politics. The fact that identity politics was the norm and not the exception at that time may be the justification for such an amalgam. Yet, even at that time the pre-SLMC Muslim leaders had the wisdom and foresight to avoid falling into that identity trap and were able to utilize their commercial tool of bargaining between the existing parties to get the best deal for their community. It was politics of pragmatism as came to be known later. What made this bargaining possible was the ubiquitous presence of Muslim voters in several parliamentary constituencies across the country. Also, the growing discontent between the Sinhalese and Tamil politicians from 1950s further strengthened the hands of Muslim leaders. As a result, special privileges were granted to the Muslim community as part of affirmative action. For example, the origins and growth of Muslim primary schools, Muslim Maha Vidyalayas, and Muslim training colleges is an outstanding testimony for the success of pragmatic politics. What is even more significant and not well researched by scholars is the fact that Muslim politics did not disturb the millennium old historic and peaceful integration of this community into Sri Lanka’s multi-ethnic polity. Muslims in every aspect had become a community OF and not IN Sri Lanka. After the 1980s and with the growth of SLMC identity politics however, this healthy integration seems to have received a set back with the intrusion of cultural elements into Muslim politics.

Without going into the origins and ideological foundation of SLMC which had been dealt with in author’s earlier columns in this journal let the readers pose the question to SLMC leaders as to what their specific achievements were since that party came into existence. On the other hand, the Muslim cemetery at Majma Nagar in Oddamavadi bears witness to the monumental failure of SLMC leaders to prevent the cremation of Corona-dead Muslims during Gotabaya’s presidency. Recently, someone had highlighted that the South-Eastern University in Oluvil is the achievement of SLMC during the time of its founder president Ashraf.  True, but the groundwork for a university in that region began during the time of former Minister of Education Badiuddin Mahmud, and had his government been returned at the 1978 General Election today’s Eastern University would have been built somewhere in the Southeast.

Be that as it may, the entry of SLMC as the leading campaigner for “Muslim rights”, which have not been identified until now, had sown either intentionally or inadvertently the seeds of Islamisation in Muslim politics. The fertilizer for its growth came largely from abroad via Jayewardena’s post-1980s open door economic paradigm. While Islamisation was merely an exercise in real politique with a religious veneer to capture Muslim votes, it soon created a space for other Islamist elements like Zahran Hashim’s Nation of Tawhid Jamaat (NTJ) to step into the political arena with more radical agendas. While SLMC campaign platforms created a religious flavour with party stalwarts appearing with beards and white caps, and while their mullahs addressing the crowd with quotes from the Holy Quran and Prophet’s sayings amidst shouts of Allahu Akbar, NTJ went a step further and advanced radical measures not simply to enter the parliament but to change Sri Lanka itself from Dharul Qufr (Abode of Non-believers) to Dharul Islam (Abode of Islam). The whole truth behind how this group eventually became a bunch of mercenaries at the hands of more sinister elements from outside the Muslim community and eventually perished in blood is yet to be revealed in full. But the point to note here is the danger of promoting identity politics with religious and cultural ingredients.

There is another disturbing development which is also an indirect consequence of SLMC’s identity politics. This is the growing trend towards Arabization of Muslim towns like Kattankudy. This enclave, which was described earlier by this columnist as a “Mullah Merchant Urban Settlement”, is now transforming into a Mullah Merchant Arab Complex. In fact, a recent Muslim tourist from Azerbaijan who visited Kattankudy did describe it as an Arab town in Sri Lanka. With around 50,000 population of whom nearly 90% are Muslims living cramped inside a land area of only 2.56 km2, with nearly 70 mosques crowned by a replica of the historic Al-Aqsa in Palestine and with street junctions and arches decorated with Arabic calligraphy, and on top of all these with a row of date palms in the middle of Kattankudy main street give this enclave a Middle Eastern flavour which is alien to Sri Lanka. Added to these elements is the “confronting” attire (as one foreign prime minister described to this columnist) worn by Muslim men and women in the name of a so-called cultural dress. A brief note on this attire is relevant in this context.

None can deny one’s right to wear whatever dress one likes. It was on that argument few years ago a couple of Muslim lady teachers in Trincomalee won their case in the court for contravening the school’s tradition of lady teachers coming in sarees. But how that victory added to the deteriorating social cohesion between Tamils and Muslims in that district escaped the notice of everyone. The same is true at the national level. Muslim attire is adding to self-alienation of Muslims in multi-cultural societies.

Recently, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya announced that Muslim girls could attend any school wearing their cultural dress and pursue their education. While welcoming this announcement it is left to the Muslim community to decide which is the most appropriate dress for their school children which, while conforming to the cultural norms of the society should not be an impediment to those children to participate fully in all school activities including co-curricular and extra-curricular ones. Excellence in academic performance should not be the sole objective of education for a Muslim child attending school

Islam in Sri Lanka as noted previously has a proud history as an integrated element of the nation’s cultural mosaic.  Post-SLMC identity politics appears to be threatening this integrated edifice as evinced by the title of a book authored by a local academic and published in 2025 with the title “Muslims in Sri Lanka” instead Muslims of Sri Lanka. That title seems to add substance to Dr. Colvin R. de Silva’s comparison of Muslim attachment to the country as that between a cow and the grass.

A Post-aragalaya Irrelevance

The 2022 aragalaya and its impact on the country’s political landscape marks a watershed in Sri Lanka’s post-independence history. The success of Anura Kumara Dissanayake (AKD) at the Presidential Election and NPP at the General Election were, if anything, lasting testimonies for voters’ rejection of identity politics. And no critic with a catalogue of pre-election promises, and post-election failures of the new president and government could accuse them of communal or religious bias. In short, identity politics is a post-aragalaya irrelevance. Yet, reactionary elements are regrouping to reinstate the ancient regime as soon as possible, because there are too many skeletons in the cupboard that are threatening to reopen hidden secrets about the felonious past of some previous leaders. Imtiaz Bakir Makar’s Vat ghost is the latest revelation demanding investigation. No wonder SLMC and its breakaway ACMC are back in the field to bargain with other reactionaries more for personal than community benefits. Will the community wake up?

Ameer Ali is a stalwart among the Island Muslims. He is an unwavering champion of Muslim identity. Added to that he is a consummate defender of their identity politics. He plays his hand dexterously.
Sri Lankan Muslims by every yardstick ARE Tamils, following Islam. We had every opportunity to face the majority Sinhalese as a united front. That possibility was ruined by opportunism.

Nathan, Tamils want a piece for LTTE politics from this island. That did not help either. Better be ordinary human beings helping each other instead of murdering.

“Better to be ordinary human beings assisting one another.”

The text compares Jesus and David, noting that while David took actions against his foster family and acquired lands, Jesus did not follow the same path. It suggests that perceptions of Jesus’ abilities continue to influence narratives today, in contrast to notable military successes attributed to Mohammad. Vijaya’s grandma managed to procreate 20 million, but Mohamad’s wars created 1.4 billion. Your remarks assume that leaderships often emulate Shepherd David’s approaches, but sometimes fails to achieve Mohammed’s record.

        DTG,

I guess I need to find out guys who create body-double to reply to your comments.

But there is an interest in identifying individuals who used body-doubles to respond to online comments. Sadampi previously engaged in discussions under multiple avatars, suggesting that different topics require distinct perspectives or personalities for comprehensive answers. He questioned whether a single personality could adequately address a variety of comments. Eventually, Sadampi moved away from this approach, citing the high costs of these “Munthanai” rentals compared to earnings from managing multiple avatars. Despite this, those renting out Munthanais remained influential, overshadowing him and diminishing while ridiculing the necessity for body doubling further.

You are 100% correct; however, when I state and many others state this obvious truth, we are attacked by an opportunistic self-hating Tamil snake and many Sinhalese who want to divide and rule the Tamils, based on origin, region, caste and religion and fake South Indian Tamil origin, fake Arab Islamic fundamentalists. The so-called Sri Lankan Moors (sic) or Muslims are descended largely from South Indian immigrant Tamil Muslims who started to migrate to the island from around the 14th century in wooden boats called Marrakalams, to the then Tamil northwest coast of Puttlam/Chilaw, which was part of the Jaffna kingdom. They were fleeing persecution after the fall of the Islamic Delhi Sultanate based in Madurai, or came to trade. However, the vast majority migrated to the island from Tamil Nadu/Kerala in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, when British rule began. The ones in the east have Eelam Tamil descent on their maternal side, as it was largely Muslim men who arrived in the Tamil east a few centuries ago as refugees fleeing Portuguese and then Sinhalese persecution and as fellow Tamils, were given land and Hindu Tamil Mukkuva women to marry and start a family. This is the reason the eastern Muslims, until a generation ago, used to follow the Mukkuva law, and the matriarchal Mukkuva kudi system, until the Arabisation craze came over.

The narrative confirms that the Muslims wisely adapt to their environment.
But their Muslim identity remained strong all along and was strengthened by the arrogant attitude of Hindu Vellala elite like P Ramanathan.
Now they do not want to be identified as anything but Muslims. that is their choice and learn to respect it. Rejection of identity can only lead to hostility.
History— not DNA fantasies —defines identity.

“They do not want to be identified as anything but Muslims” Really! Then why claim a fake Arab blanket descent and call themselves Sri Lankan Moors? Instead of Sri Lankan Tamil Muslims or Muslim Tamils. Moors originate from North Africa, specifically Morocco, and are largely of a Berber/Arab Sub-Saharan African mix, with a small amount of Iberian European ancestry, and are not from Yemen or other parts of the Arabian Gulf, which is the imagined homeland of the Sri Lankan Tamil Muslims. Everyone knows that the actual homeland of the Sri Lankan Muslims, aka fake Moors, is South India, present-day Tamil Nadu and from Southern Kerala, which was also Tamil when they migrated. The vast majority of the Muslims living in the southern parts of Kerala are ethnic Tamil Muslims; many have now switched their mother tongue from Tamil to Malayalam. The Malyali Mappila Muslims largely come from central and north Kerala.

Muslim is a religious identity and not a racial or ethnic identity, just like being a Buddhist, Christian or Hindu. Ethnic and religious identities are different. You can only have an ethno-religious identity when your religion or faith is confined to a certain group of people or ethnicity, Eg, the Jews, Druze, Yazidi, Sikhs, Parsi and not when it is a world religion that is followed by many races, nationalities and linguistic groups. If these fake Arab converted immigrant South Indian origin Muslims want only to be identified as Muslims and not anything else, and want a monopoly and sole claim on this religious identity, then what are the other Muslims belonging to other races and ethnicities to be called and religiously identified? Cats? Birds? Camel? DNA states the truth of who you are and your actual history, origin and blood and is not a fantasy; you do not like it as it states the truth, and you do not like the truth. So does actual history, but not racist myths like the Mahavamsa, promoting the indigenous Sinhalese Aryan myth and Arabian Nights fairy tales, promoting a fake Arab blanket origin for the largely low caste converted South Indian origin Tamil Muslims of Sri Lanka.

        • 9
          4

Actual history does not lead to hostility but enlightens and clears doubts, and so does accurate DNA analysis, and the DNA analysis done on the Sinhalese and Muslims, which concluded that they are descended largely and overwhelmingly from Tamil Dravidian,s was done by Sinhalese scientists and North Indians, not by others and all other DNA studies done by many others also come to the same conclusion and result. This means DNA is telling the truth. It is myths that lead to hostility and feelings of fake superiority and war, and you love myths, as you thrive in hostility and hatred, as you have immensely benefited from this, at the expense of your people. Sri Lanka is full of racist myths and not actual history, and this is the root cause of wars, hostility and bankruptcy/economic decline and the elite, politicians and religious clergy thrive on these racist myths. also hate DNA as it tells the truth, and you hate the truth. Do not blame the Vellala or Sir Ponambalam Ramanathan for stating the truth. You accuse everyone of being racist of casteist, but you are the biggest racist and casteist. Constantly haranguing Tamil Vellalars and Brahmins but defending racist casteist Sinhalese Govigammas and Kandyan Radala families.

Lastly, this article is from the Colombo Telegraph and is written by a Muslim Borah, and he, like every intelligent person, states the truth that the so-called Sri Lankan Moors or Muslims or ethnic Tamil Muslims and states Sir Ponnambalam Ramanathan was deliberately abused and villified for daring the state the obvious truth by then British colonial government, the Sinhalese and Muslim elite who were power hungry and wanted to divide and rule.

They also want to have the cake and eat it. Want to deny and distance themselves from their actual Tamil ancestry, heritage and origin in the name of their religion, and claim an imagined blanket Arab origin and ancestry, with an exclusive Salafist/Wahabi Arab Islamic identity, which, unlike the Tamil Islamic identity, is alien to the island, but when its advantageous to them and it suits their agenda, claim to be ethnic Tamils, downplaying their so called Arab Islamic identity, when claiming assylum in the west or visiting Tamil Nadu/India. Whenever they were in trouble and had to flee during ancient times, they fled from their original homeland in South India to the Tamil parts of the island for refuge, claiming to be Tamil, and later, when the Portuguese and Sinhalese persecuted them ultimately ran to the ancient Tamil east, for refuge a few centuries ago, again claiming to be fellow Tamils and were given refuge, land and Mukkuva Hindu women to settle and start a family as fellow Tamils.

The answer is they are not Arabs but Tamils, and everyone knows this, the Arabs, the Tamils and even they. As fellow Tamil Muslims, they have the right to live in dignity, enjoy the same rights, practice their religion, and be part of the Tamil homeland in the north and east. However, trying to steal the ancient Tamil east, where they arrived as refugees a few centuries ago, from its original Tamil owners to create an exclusive fake Arab Wahhabi/Salafist Taliban like Islamic homeland will not be allowed. Arabs. The Arabic language, Arabic dress and customs do not belong to the island and are alien. If you want to be Arab, please go to Western Asia or to the Arabian Gulf and see if they accept you.

PR, despite many good social deeds as an individual, was a male chauvinist, anti-Dalit bigot who opposed universal franchise by opposing voting rights for women and denying it to Dalits by imposing a literacy criterion.

There is hardly any Arab ancestry in them, and all modern DNA studies have confirmed this. Arab traders and missionaries definitely came to their original South Indian homeland and even here, and converted many local Tamils to Islam, and even intermarried with local women, but this was negligible, and whatever Arab DNA, has vanished in the huge sea of converted Dravidian Tamil Muslims, and is now only confined to a few families, and these people too are of predominant Tamil ancestry. However, for perceived political and economic benefits and to divide and rule the island’s Tamils, first the British and later all Sinhalese-led Sri Lankan governments and the island’s power-hungry and selfish Muslim elite and politicians, have deliberately encouraged a separate identity for the Island’s Tamil Muslims, based on their religion and this fake blanket Arab origin myth, that science and DNA has proven beyond doubt they hardly or do not have

These people have now successfully brainwashed the island’s Tamil Muslim masses to hate their actual rich 1000-year-old Tamil Islamic culture that they brought from their original South Indian homeland, their Tamil ancestry, heritage and origin and believe that lie that they are actually of Arab descent and worship anything remotely connected to the Arabs in the name of their religion and have made them religious fanatics, now comically and pathetically dressing up and trying to behave like Gulf Arabs and to even make Tamil Muslim majority areas in the east look like some part of western Asia and not tropical South Asia.

Have you read his comments over the past several years?
He is among the most religiously tolerant persons on these pages.
The Muslims have asserted their identity strongly since P Ramanathan tried to deny them identity and representation, and even took sides with SB racists against them.
Most Tamil nationalists arrogantly treat Muslims like a lower class Tamil group. (You can read many such comments on these pages.)
They have problems unique to them about which Tamil nationalists seldom cared. Why don’t you respect their choice?

SJ, I do not argue with what you state, and they can have a separate identity from the rest of the Tamils based on their religion, but this identity and origin should be based on truth, real history and origin, and not on myths to deliberately create rifts and disharmony and racial superiority, and the truth is the Sri Lankan Muslims are descended from South Indian Tamil Hindu converts to Islam and not from the Arabs or anyone else. Yes, there is some Arab ancestry in a few hundred families out of a population of 2 million, and these people will not even amount to 40000, and even this is a very distant male Arab ancestor, and all the rest of their ancestors are Tamils. One distant male ancestor does not make them Arab; they are still Tamils. No one is treating them as low castes; the Tamils are only stating the truth, and if they do not like the actual truth and want a myth to be the truth, as it makes them feel good and superior, then it is not the Tamils’ problem, but theirs. However, this myth was deliberately spread by their politicians and elite. for their own benefit, has created untold misery between both people and only strengthened the power of the ruling Sinhalese elite, who have immensely benefited from this disunity and have a vested interest in fostering the Arab origin myth and separate identity, and even Arabising them to further distance them from their actual Tamil identity and origin and look what it led to in April 2019.

What makes a social identity is a choice of a people.

It may be a tirade for you, but what I stated is correct. As the basis and claim for their separate identity from the rest of the island’s Tamil, indigenous /Indian origin, Hindu, and Christian populations is partly based on their religion, but mainly on the claim that, despite speaking Tamil and following many Tamil customs, they are of the Tamil race or ethnicity, but are of Arab descent, therefore should be considered a different people. Even then, most people were aware that this was a lie and a myth, and if there was any Arab in them, it was very negligible and far below average. However, these lies and myths were deliberately encouraged by the British colonials, despite many of their officials privately scorning this lie and writing that the Sri Lankan Muslims or Moors are Tamil Hindu converts to Islam and not of Arab descent, and later by the Sinhalese ruling elite to divide and rule.

          • 2
            0

Now history, science and common sense have proven beyond doubt, what everyone privately knew but did not dare to mention, that they are indeed Tamils belonging to other religions, largely Hindu who converted to Islam and do not have a blanket Arab descent, and if there is, it is far, far below average and not worth speaking about. They are entitled to a separate identity if they wish, but it should be based on truth, not a lie or a myth, to create disharmony and friction. They should be called Muslim Tamils, just like the Druse Arabs, or the Slavic Muslims of Bosnia and Moors or Arabs, as they are not. Now trying to deliberately look, dress, and behave like Gulf Arabs just to prove a point and to make a myth and lie about the truth, will not work. It is really sad and pathetic.

They reject their actual Tamil identity here for perceived political and economic benefits, not for any other reason. and this is aided and abetted by the Sinhalese Sri Lankan state, their selfish power-hungry elite and by self-hating Tamil snakes, who want ot destroy their people. However, to seek asylum in the West, and other perceived benefitsthey claim their Tamil identity and downplay their fake Arab Islamic identity. Tamil when it suits them, but Tamil-hating fake Arabs at all other times. Even Arabs say they do not have any Arab descent and call them South Asian converts.

Respect is earned, and so far their behaviour and attitude, nor yours towards fellow non Muslim Tamils, does not warrant it. From the time of independence, all they have done is backstab the Tamils in the name of Islam and a fake Arab origin, for benefits and crumbs from the Sinhalese table. If they can gain benefit at the expense of the Tamil, either here or abroad, they will do it, lying, cheating, at the UN, anywhere.

It has nothing to do with caste, which you constantly bring here as a red herring to divert the truth. Lots of Tamils are low caste, and lots of Sinhalese are low caste, but they do not deny their heritage. These people, until very recently, even here, were posting nasty racist comments against the Tamils, calling us black Dravidians and how white and beautiful they are, as they are of Arab descent. Most probably did not look at themselves in the mirror. Now very quiet, and the actual truth has come out. You were also joining them and aiding and abetting them. Most probably, you did not look at yourself in the mirror. Where was the respect? Standardisation, trying to steal the east over the heads of the Tamils who gave them refuge in the east when they arrived a few centuries ago, claiming to be Tamil. Islamic homeguards. We used to have Muslim columnists here, not one but a few, writing hate Tamil articles and justifying the war crimes and genocide. You are the biggest hypocrite

Tamil speaking Muslims and Tamils of Thondamans in the
Hill country were not part of the struggle . The country is a
Democracy and people of all hues , united and divided , choose
to act and react to prevailing situations in the country under
leaderships available to them . One example , just because
1971 insurgency was a Sinhalese , the country didn’t stretch out
both its hands to embrace them ! The North chose a war that
was not winnable and were not united among themselves . And
most importantly Muslims are capable of choosing what they
want out of their life in the name of religion or any other issue .
They paid a price for it on many occasions .

    “Will the community wake up?”
We should understand the religious identity in politics did more harm to this country and all the religions whether they are Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The outcome of this religious identity is the fundamental for everything that happened until now. I am not blaming any particular religion but blame only politics of this using the religion which used by the rulers of the country since it came in the hands of Sinhalese leaders. Almost nearly four or five centuries this land was not ruled by Buddhism or Hinduism or Islam. But within a century suddenly become lovers of Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam. We become Buddhist Terrorism, Hindu Terrorism and Islam Terrorism. We killed more people in the name of religion. We killed more of own people than external people. We become more drug addicts than any other country. We chased way more of our own people from this country. Did these religions happy with these outcomes?

“religious identity in politics did more harm to this country and all the religions whether they are Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Islam.”
      A sweeping statement.
Sinhala Buddhism was the most prominent religious force.
The Catholic Church was highly political and stepped back only after 1956, but it backed the UNP even in the 1960s.
Hindu politicization was not feasible as it was in North India. Some recent attempts are notorious but not capturing the population.
Islamic fundamentalism was a divisive force predominantly within the Muslim community and was not aimed at others.
It is easy to generalize to suit one’s prejudices. but meaningful conclusions are quite another matter.

Yes, you would love the island’s Tamils to break up into various small identities, based on religion, region, origin, caste, and class, so that they can become useless, ineffectual, fight and vie with each other, toadying up to their racist Sinhalese masters for crumbs from their table, just like what the Muslims did and ultimately get destroyed and assimilated as Sinhalese, just like the way the Colombo Chetties and Paravans and Bharathas are fast becoming Sinhalese just like the way the Tamil ancestors of the present day Sinhalese Karawa, Salagama, Durawa and many other low born and high born communities did before them. However, you want the Sinhalese to remain as one powerful unit irrespective of origin, region, religion, caste or class so that they can destroy these squabbling, infighting and ineffectual little Tamil identities. You will love this and want this, and I can see through your game.

“the pre-SLMC Muslim leaders had the wisdom and foresight to avoid falling into that identity trap “
It was not wisdom but what was practical then.
The election system after 1978 enabled Muslims to be elected in larger numbers, but still short of what they deserved.
Identity always played a role and political parties fielded candidates based on dominant identity.
Muslims diversified their business interests and went for higher education in a big way since the 197s and their success in ME jobs, gem trade and later entry into professions led to envy not just of the Sinhalese middle class but also the Tamil middle class.
Special privileges for Muslim education in the 1950s had little to do with Sinhala–Tamil rivalry.
The Muslims were educationally backward and needed encouragement. W Daha as Minister of Education did very much to help. (Very few talk about his contribution. His awareness could have arisen from his electorate having a significant Muslim population.)
    BTW
Arabization had much to do with the surge in West Asian jobs and business contacts. It was also a time when Saudi Arabia wanted to push for influence.
The Author has a model into which he is trying to fit data rather selectively.

An outstanding gentleman born to a ‘high caste’ elite Hindu family visited Jaffna recently and found his ancestral lands taken over by locals. Having lived in the West for several decades he had long lost interest in those properties and was happy to see them put to good use by several farming families.

He had discussed gifting those lands to the occupiers with a relative resident in Jaffna and had been told that he shouldn’t do so because ” those people are low caste”. He went back home a very disappointed man.

Really! You expect us to believe your fairy tale? Strange, I also knew of an outstanding Kandyan gentleman from an elite Radala family who returned from overseas to visit his ancestral lands around Kandy, and found that they had been taken over by locals. He also has lived in the West for decades and has lost interest in these properties, and was also happy to see them put to good use by these poor families. He also discussed gifting these lands to the current occupiers when his relatives, who reside in Kandy, advised him not to do so, as these people were of low caste. He also went home a very sad and disappointed man. Heard that you were one of these relatives. How dare you? You think were are idiots? All this fake concern for the estate Tamils and low castes, by you and the snake, when it was these Tamils who were the most affected by state-sponsored Sinhalese racism and terrorism and still are. Most of the Tamil upper castes/classes and even the middle castes and classes have fled to the West. Where were you and the snake when the Sinhalese state made the estate Tamils stateless and made life hell for them, as well as for the poor Tamil masses and lower castes in the north and east? Especially his Radala Heroine Siri Ma?
