On Protests

By Tisaranee Gunasekara

“Actually time itself is neutral. It can be used either destructively or constructively.” ~ Martin Luther King (Letter from Birmingham Jail)

On November 2019, 6.9million Lankans overestimated the intelligence, capacity and compassion of the Rajapaksa brothers. That mistaken assessment was the root cause of the tragedy we are living through today as individuals and as a nation.

Should we now compound that error by fatally underestimating their will to power?

The Rajapaksas are not Supermen, as 6.9million (mostly Sinhala-Buddhist) Lankans believed, naively, against reason, experience, and critical intelligence. But they aren’t paper-tigers either. They will fight with everything they possess to stay in power at least until the next national election. And that everything-they-possess include not just all the might of the state but also the legality of the constitution.

The only asset those who choose to oppose them on the streets own is the moral highground. And that can be maintained only if protests stay nonviolent, even in the face of provocative state violence.

To think that a president can be ousted by surrounding his office or his home, to believe that the Rajapaksa regime is a house of cards that will collapse at a touch would be as unintelligent as believing in the myth of ‘Our Hero who Labours’ (Weda karana ape wiruwa).

The Rajapaksas will fight back first with tear gas and water cannon, then with rubber bullets and finally with live ammunition. They have a history of doing so against protestors, including in the South. They did so during the FTZ protest, the Rathupaswala protest and the fishermen’s protest, all this under Mahinda Rajapaksa presidency.

This time too, shots could be fired and lives lost. As is almost always the case, the dead will be ordinary people. They will be lionised for a day, a week, hailed as martyrs, then forgotten by all except their loved ones who will bear the scars of those violent losses for life.

This is not an argument against protests. This is an argument against violent protests. Violence once unleashed by either side is hard to contain. And its primary victims will be Sri Lanka and her poorer citizens. It might even work in Rajapaksa favour by giving them a reason to unleash a wave of repression.

Protests are hardly uncommon in today’s Sri Lanka. Protests happen outside petrol stations when angry customers block roads. Citizens stand on roadsides holding candles night after night. This week, protestors blocked roads in Bandarawela, reportedly preventing the advent of Minister Namal Rajapaksa. Last month, a group of women engaged in a sit-in protest outside the president’s Mirihana residence.

Most of these protests are by ordinary Lankans with little or no political involvements. And they stay peaceful. The protests are not turned into do-or-die kind of zero-sum-game. The protestors engage with the police, and both sides compromise to maintain peace. A protest blocking a road, for instance, will allow one lane to be opened for traffic. These protestors don’t want to die on the road or end up in hospitals. That sort of ‘heroism’ is a luxury beyond their economic means. They want to, need to, have to return to their waiting families in one piece.

These protestors perhaps intuitively understand a key political truth. When the balance of power is totally asymmetrical, when your opponent owns all the might of a functioning state (which is armed to the teeth), non-violence is not just morally right; it is also politically smart.

The Day After

Imagine that a kind fate, a generous magician banishes the entire Rajapaksa clan in one fell swoop to another universe. What will that Day-after look like? Will we have sane minded people working together to haul the country out of the abyss she is in? Or will we have various opposition parties and personalities squabbling for the biggest share of the political pie? Who and what will creep into the corridors of power through the resulting cracks?

Imagine the protests succeed in ousting the Rajapaksas. A key role in such a scenario will belong to the military. That role could be passive (the military disobeys orders to put down protests and stays in barracks) or active (the military actively assists the protestors). Either way, the men in uniforms will be seen as heroes by the larger public, giving them outsized influence in post-Rajapaksa Sri Lanka.

That, for example, was what happened in Egypt. The military turned against the Mubarak regime, and was hailed as heroes and saviours by the protestors. Now General el-Sisi is President el-Sisi, and the military runs the state.

One of the most worrying findings of the CPA’s latest survey is that 36.3% of Sinhalese are agreeable (strongly or somewhat) to governance by military. The combined vote of the SJB, the JVP and the UNP at the last parliamentary election was a much lower 29.89%. 60.5% of Sinhalese also think that the military is more suitable to handle public affairs at a time of crisis. And 89.9% of Sinhalese are either very or somewhat satisfied about the ongoing militarisation of civil spaces. All of this point to a potential danger that can become actualised if anti-Rajapaksa protests don’t stay peaceful.

If on the Day-after the Rajapaksas are thrown out, the opposition is at loggerheads about who should be what, giving rise to public discontent and disgust, will the military step in to restore order, a kind of an honest broker? If they do, won’t these same protestors hail them as their new saviours, Diyasen kumarayas in uniform? Won’t this be a paradise regained for the hardest of the hard Sinhala-Buddhist racist right, the ones who think that the problem with Gotabaya is that he is not being enough of a Hitler?

The public was rightly outraged when a club (obviously with top political connections) organised a motor vehicle rally under the guise of philanthropy. A Buddhist monk was hailed as a hero for stepping on to the road and stopping the vehicle procession.

There is a revealing postscript to this story. Dan Priyasad, a notorious anti-minority incendiary, called the monk to object to the monk’s conduct. He began his telephone conversation by reminding the monk of their common past. The monk had sought help from Dan Priyasad against a Christian church in the area over the matter of loudspeaker-usage. What kind of help anyone would want from the likes of Dan Priyasad is all too easy to guess.

The anti-minority hard right which was once solidly behind the Rajapaksas is now split. Some are with the regime while others are gravitating towards oppositional space. If Sri Lanka descends into a spiral of violence and counter-violence, if streets become the locus of oppositional politics, these extremists (especially the ones in robes) will be able to play a star role. One can easily imagine a scenario where some former Rajapaksa Ape Hamuduruwo approaches a group of Our (uniformed) Boys asking them to use their guns to save the motherlands again.

And the Rajapaksas will be replaced by former Rajapaksa acolytes who are as racist, intolerant, and anti-democratic as their erstwhile masters, if not more.

In her error-ridden history, modern Lanka avoided making two mistakes – military rule and extra-constitutional governmental change.

Will we compound the fatal errors of 2019 (and 2020) by crossing those red lines?

Beware of anarchy

Anger is probably the predominant national emotion today, just ahead of despair. Normal life is disrupted in multiple ways (I’m writing this in the brief interlude between two power cuts). We are caught in a spiralling crisis with no end in sight.

The Rajapaksas are clueless about the depth and the extent of the crisis and about potential solutions (even a few band aids seem beyond their meagre mental capacities). The opposition’s heart might be in the right place; the same cannot be said about its brain. Their common inability to come up with a political and policy alternative is what makes the crisis hermitic and pushes people into despairing fury.

But so far we have managed to avoid an outbreak of violence, a general breakdown in law and order, a descent into anarchy.

That is an achievement worth of retaining.

I don’t know who is organising the Sunday’s planned protest. For me, that mystery is a serious problem. This is not a Hollywood movie, a Lankan version of V for Vendetta. This is real life, where violence has actual consequences, the burnt stay burnt and the dead stay dead. Whoever the organisers are, I hope they will learn something from the way ordinary Lankans express their anger against the Rajapaksas.

The people waiting for days outside petrol sheds are justly furious. They curse the government openly. Yet when they block a road in protest, they are peaceful and disciplined. They don’t chant slogans, let alone throw rocks. They sit on their receptacles with Atlas-like patience and strength. These protests are not showy like the Mirihana drama. But they are more consequential.

If the proposed march happens on Sunday, I hope it will be silent, orderly, and peaceful. I hope the marchers will converge in peace and disperse in peace. I hope they understand that ousting a government is a serious business that cannot be done in one day or one week, especially when that government happens to be an elected one. I hope there will not be a repeat of Mirihana on a larger canvas. Yesterday no lives were lost. Next time, the outcome might be different.

(Incidentally, why not these organisers use their passion and their talents to build a movement that can be a true alternative not just to the Rajapaksas but to the opposition as well? Why not go the Chile way? After all, unlike in the case of Arab Spring countries and like in Chile, we can get rid of the Family through the ballot box.)

If violence breaks out, mobs may not be far away. Order will breakdown. The door might open to anarchy.

That would not resolve the national plight but take it down to a new and deadly low.

The prairie is tinder dry. If anyone, even for the noblest reason, throws a lighted match onto it, the resulting conflagration will consume what little has survived the Rajapaksa brothers’ two and a half years of criminal misrule.

A private TV station carried a clip of two monks outside a petrol station asking the police to turn their guns on the government. That might sound tis a dangerous road to go, asking the police and the military

Let’s not fool ourselves: both the USD and energy crisis as well as, the Protests are STAGED to get Sri Lanka in Washington’s and the IMF clutches… Now the stage is set for IMF is set to come like GOD to bailout suffering Sri Lanka.. But Lanka needs and independent Economic and Energy Policy and buy its oil, gas, etc from Russia at discount prices like India is doing..
Going to the IMF means that Sri Lanka cannot have an independent economic or ENERGY policy, or buy, oil, gas, or jet fuel and source its energy needs from Russia which is selling discount oil to India.
When did America actually build anything? What have they built in this cournty – they only steal power plants like Yugadhanavi, asset strip in poor countries with their Hedge funds like Black Rock and promote fake human rights and democracy while backing dictators who use ethnic and religious masks like fig leafs.. LIke the American Rajapakse brothers..

Thisaranee: have you heard of the Arab Spring and CIA staged Colour revolutions? Well, this is South Asia’s Arab Spring Moment – Pakistani, PM Imran Khan is facing a regime change operation cos he visited Russia recently, and as the Cold War is back the Economic Crisis and Protests in Lanka are being staged to send US citizen and IMF-MCC Economic Hit man, Sri Lanka’s Minister of Economic Disaster back to Washington and IMF while, brother Gota and Mahinda Rajapakse stages another show as a SB nationalist reluctant to go there…US wants to set up its operations to control the Indian Ocean Sea Lanes of Communication (SLOC) from Strategic Lanka.
Also Washington has printed 9 trillion and has a 20 trillion debt and Lankas debt is peanuts in comparison!

I am afraid, Dinuk or the like mercy cows should come with alternatives if we are asked not to go to IMF.
      .
These men have not the least knowledge about the basics of the problems. Srilank s situation is far more dangerous than appeared to be. Arrogance of a stupid family cant achieve anything, but pave the way to fall even deeper.

Very true. Already the slimy and incompetent Maithripala, who plotted to bring the Rajapaksas back, is bidding for power. Any new constitution should prevent the return to Parliament of ex-heads of state.
Then there are the maneuvering of that odious trio, Weerawansa, Gammanpila and Vasu, more responsible for creating this regime than the Rajapaksas themselves, now pretending that Basil is the cause of the problem! The SJB unbelievably stupid enough to invite them.
This extremist cabal of monks and their hangers-on must be kept out of power at all costs. Mahinda thought he could use them for his project, and sank the country into a feudal quagmire of superstition, nativity, and irrational superstition.

Dumb Dinuk, show me evidence that you protested when MR advanced loans from China @ 7% pa interest payable in 10 years with no grace period AS AGAINST the usual IMF 1.5% pa for 30 years with 7 years grace period!!!!!! What are you eating these days??

TG, thank you so much, for yet another factful article. Rightlly so, like many, you too seems to be at lost for answers to current situation. In my opinion 1) According to human psychology, the human response to a dire/danger situation are FRIGHT/fear, FLIGHT/ get away and when not possible FIGHT. The situation we are facing now is much worse in that people are not onlyfacing danger but starvation, uncertainity, suffering, hopeless, helpless, worthless, panic, grief/guilt (which again leads to denial, anger, depression, bargain), seeing own children sick, not having food, politicians with no empathy, politicians showing off their luxury right in front of starving public, our own President /PM provoking by their acts/ behaviour/speech/crass….. though I do not condone, to expect citizen not to turn violent, is just a wish.

It’s not at all a surprise to see 36 % SB wishing or supporting a military rule, All it means it almost 75 years of failed political system has lead them to abandon and try unconventional governance out of desperation. But even then, the inbuilt immorality and hatred within them will prefer military over alternate governance (power sharing or a genuine united national government representing all communities) hoping military will continue to subjugate minoritities as in previous SB governments. It is not a surprise the majority who seek military as replacement, are those disgruntled 6.9 million retards.

As per Silly Lankan constipation Rajapaksas have 2 more years to go. Lets say, as TG suggest, people without turning violent can use their inner strength in organizing or building a movement/alternate government. But in the mean time who will feed the starving public, treat sickness, alleviate their misery ??? . By all means, who ever comes to power after two years will face much larger problem than now. The situation we have right now is like a pressur cooker about to explode at any time, unpredictable so much so keeps changing from day to day.

Apparently there was a another protest today in NuweraEeliya where Shiranthi was expected to inaugurate flower show in Carlton preschool. Though there was massive police cordon present, protesters managed to invade the place causing disruption. The Shiranthi show was cancelled but the planned flowershow to continue until 30th. (who will pay for electricity, water and police ???). Also see the pictures of people who visited GR’s residence for crime investigation and analysis. There is Ganasara, many other monks, SW, Pavithra, Shavendra, finger print experts, Prasanna (busy taking selfies) looks like the whole cabinet and security staff are present. SW already called it an act of extremist. Remember every minority was called such by the same men.

Are minorities worried that they will not be able to play hell and ruin Sinhale, the Land of Sinhalayo and Vedda Eththo as they did since the time Sinhale gained independence by promoting separatism and fundamentalist extremism using rotten democracy imposed on indigenous Sinhala Buddhists by British?

Unless and until they are hit in the “stomach” and/or have to be exposed to elements without a shelter this attitude will not change!
One will well remember, Ranasinghe Premadasa’s ‘adage’ in 1980 to 1991 which won voters in far out rural SL and election winner, until his untimely death, despite of his ruthlessness and unforgiving nature!!
That was the reason for ‘Gam Udawa’ and the welfare for food (Sausirya?) and SME welfare programme to ensure the ‘pangs of Hunger pain’ was alleviated and ensuring even mediocre home!!
That era 1990 – 94, had the best investor prospects and gains, export and tourism results of Independent Ceylon and Sri Lankan, notwithstanding the drag of the LTTE terrorist war!!!!
Pohottuwa decided to follow, different and hitherto “untested and unproven”, ‘Medamulana Brand’ from the time-tested ‘Keselwatte Doctrine’ and changed it.
Ofcourse, the present Pohottuwa government, didn’t want to follow the ‘RP precept’ because the R Bros Inc., wanted to differentiate for gains in future elections!!!!
They decided on the “New path” and roadway to reach prosperity and splendour and really ‘Failed’!!
None can help them now until 2024 when elections are due!
Think well before you act, especially when voting.

          And
          2. “Demalu in Yapanaya who got disgruntled with democracy opted for a megalomaniac despot whose pastime was killing innocent Sinhala Buddhist civilians using suicide bombers”
Such being the scenario, the high level of cunning but with low Intelligence, disgruntled with democracy, opted for an Oxford educated, silver tongue megalomaniac whose one and only ambition was to be the PM of Ceylon from the time of the untimely demise of the PM DSS at all cost, (which is not what you expect from an Oxford educated and emancipated individual), by “Hook or by Crook”!
The only question unanswered is whether he had the intellect to be an Oxford educated and become a demonic prospector of Power and not in the interests of the populace of SL??
          Reaping the benefits Now!
Unfortunate and Unexpected though in Full measure to boot!!

RETARDS, who cannot distinctly identify, the difference of Toads from Frogs, if specimens are shown even, ‘under the mid-day sunlight’!
They are main constituents of the 6.9 million brigade, elected this government!!
They do not deserve democratic process of governance. They are happy without ‘those frills’ as in their wisdom, is a “capitalist western way of living”, unsuitable for SL’s 2500 year culture!!!
WW, VN and UG combines clarion call to stop Apples and Oranges (what effect that will have on US$ 52 Billion loan repayment staring in your face in next few years can be only explained by RETARDS).
The big question. is what were this combine and their acolytes (Many) doing when the MR government, which they were part of getting loan after loan on commercial interest rates for projects without a sensible RoI, nor grace period commensurate with the magnitude of the loans???
Nothing but enjoying the “Plums of Office” and joining the fanfare to have a good time!!
They are the leaders of the combine of RETARDS in governance and election of MISMANAGEMENT!

Thisaranee: Last week I saw Fake “protestors” in support of the IMF! Obivously fake and staged “protests” calling for the IMF to come to rescue Sri Lanka at Nelum Pokuna the other day!
Thought I was dreaming because all the genuine protests I know for the past 30 years all over the world were against IMF _ WB and Washington Consensus … Not for them!
These “protests” are certainly part CIA Arab Spring operation to destabilize the country.. which has been subject to hybrid cyber maritime trade and economic warfare since the 2019 Easter attacks on Shangri La and other luxury hotels to crash tourism dependent economy using ISIS and religion as a smokescreen..
The US game with the UNP and SLFP, Govt. and opposition has always been “heads I win, tails you loose”.

A video clip showed a number of youth who were suspected of participating in last night protest were being taken away in a White bus (with lines of different colors) destination unknown.

A lady spoke to them through windows.
She assured the youth that saying “You are our Virayo”.
When youth fought against Sri Lankan armed forces people were made to believe the members of armed forces were Virayos. The tables have turned now it appears the protesters who are against the armed forces and Gota are seen as Virayos and the armed forces …….. I am sure the lady must have voted for Gota.

The youth that took the ride does concern me as a human being. But as you say Karma is a B!tch.

People in the North suffered without Milk, Gas, Petrol, Medicine etc for decades. It was no concern for the people in the south and some even cheered this action of the state depriving a section of its own population of mere necessities.

Because of the hard times people learnt to live or overly rely on gas, food and veg coming from other parts of the country. They did not give-up the good old mode of transport the bicycle. Today they are better off than the south not because they have more but they have learnt to manage with little that they have and be happy.

          Bert,
“People in the North suffered without Milk, Gas, Petrol, Medicine etc. for decades.”
That was not all, No Tooth Paste (TP), Tooth Brush (TB) and Toilet Soap (TS) – for personal hygiene) to boot and even detergent to Wash Pans and Dishes!! – Normal household items.
Well remember the budget day in 1970, when NMP, declared that TP, TB and TS imports were banned overnight, the protagonist was none other than JRJ!! Taking away the right of personal property and whether NMP proposes to introduce communal TB’s as in communist empires??
Very same JRJ forgot almost 7-8 years later (within the decade) what he propounded in 1970??
          He was playing Silly bugger!!
Well remember the time, used to visit our branches in the North and East
They were improvising with Crushed wood charcoal for Tooth paste and Ash and sand instead to clean the Pots and Pans!!
My used tooth paste and soap were retained, wherever I stayed as gift to the ‘room boy’ instead of any tip at all!!
Such was the case in 1981 onwards.
Why the scarcity or ban on TP, TB, Toiletries and household detergents, make me wonder?
          Probably, helped the war effort.

    ————-
Another misleading article by a journalist.
The situation in SL is not due to ‘Rajapaksa incompetence’.
Rajapaksas are freemasons (like all other previous Lankan leaders and most of the Lankan ruling classes), and they have been instructed to cause the situation you see now.
This is also happening world wide to varying degrees and it is all manufactured.
Mark Alan King found this gematria entry recently. Though it says ‘jews’, it refers to the tares and freemasons world wide:

When I attend meetings I dont talk to sinhalas and watch their obvious embarrassment!!!! vis a v the tamils at these meetings

      Dear Gus,
      .
Talk to Sinhalese like me, and Tisaranee who were never for the war waged by idiots.
      .
Even where that war is concerned, target those who manipulated the common man, so that he believed Mahayana myths.
      .
      Life has to continue.
      .
How should we give these messages? Youtube in Sinhala appears to swamp all else. We must be realistic in estimating Colombo Telegraph readership. Also their credibility in comments is lowered by the use of pseudonyms, and short-hand (where I’m referred to as SM). A new reader will be puzzled.
      .
I’m not finding fault. That’s the only way that some can afford to comment. Do what you can to ensure benign transfer to a new order. I’m not so foolish as to believe that there will be no violence. But we can minimise it.

        Hi EE

I actually find few tamils cleaning toilets but mainly sinhalas cleaning toilets gardening and that sort of low skilled work. You must be living in Cuckoo Land. I have come across security guard tamil fathers with medical surgeon children,
Most tamils that I know in the country in the West that I live are middle class or upper class.
My mother’s country Malaysia imports sinhalas to do cleaning of toilets including in ceylon tamils home. I recently telephoned an aunt in Kuala Lumpur and a female answered who spoke good english to the extent that I thought she was a relative and my aunt told me that it was her sinhala maid obvious will be cleaning the 7 (seven) toilets in my aunts home in KL.
Additionally sinhalas are involved in a big way in cleaning toilets, in singapore, south korea, italy , japan,, middle east countries and I understand are queuing massively in sinhala land for these menial jobs in other countries.
        etc.
In my house the cleaning is done by a female chinese student from Malaysia as I would not trust a thieving sinhala person !!!!!
Have a great day EE in your cuckoo land and hopefully the Rajapakses will eliminate a lot of you by starvation personal suicide or turning guns on you wasted space sinhalas

        EE,
When the uneducated and low IQ, agree that’s what happens!! Like the ones going to Middle East to do Janitorial services, which has been keeping the Sri Lankan economy ‘ticking’, which the shameless do not seem to acknowledge??!!
Moreover, they do not recognise the sacrifices these immigrant workers contribute, working away from their families by converting their US$ at realistic value, so that remittances could come through official channels than the black market??!!
that’s why, we don’t have dollars for Fuel, Food and gas, morons!!
Cabal- Rala would not go away until MR exits to keep family secrets!!

This is called Rajapakshe facism. People at large were fooled for their political survival. However people have realized today that the bugger et al are not all it s cracked up to be. Nor have they the capacities to save the country from the alarming situation..
      .
Not just the minorities but whole lot of majority would want to see these men end up in jails. All what they looted should be taken back from them and should be nationalised/ they are simply tasteless/ and well deserved to be behind bars forever..

Gus, when you speak gloriously on behalf of ‘Tamils’ in diaspora, do you also talk on behalf of the Tamils working as labourers in the tea estates in Sri Lanka? And also Tamils working as toilet cleaners in Colombo? While we, majority of Sinhalese in CT have foregone all our bloody history and bash any ethnic divide and fight for a fair and reasonable government free of corruption for ALL Sri Lankans, insanely stupid racist people like you are bringing in that despicable racist card and downgrade everyone else but Tamils! How do you think you are going to contribute to bring peace to this almost destructed island!!!

        Jit,
Let me provide a pre-emptive apology for intervention in this instance!
Whilst, I agree with the golden intent to discard any and all racist or anti communal harmony intent, my take is that this was purely a response to the comment (racist or otherwise is a moot point) by another contributor’s comments, ‘inter alia’,
“By cleaning toy lets (believe mis-spelt Toilets) of white guys and working as fishermen in Nordic countries?”
however, i agree that this has been symbolic style of the ‘Ceylonese’ and after 1970, ‘Sri Lankan’ style since independence causing this “great divide” of Sinhalese, Tamils, Burghers, Muslims, Malays etc., which, if becomes extinct is the best that could happen to this country and emancipation

Dear Mahila, I appreciate your decency!! My point is, Gus has been the Tamil version of Sinhala EE or Soma. It doesnt help at all!! We as Sinhalese are bashing Mahavansha fables and fake Buddhist monks all the time to bring the reality to the land we were born and bred. We are together fighting here to chase away these world class rogues who robbed the wealth of all – Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims equally! And make our motherland a paradise again for all of us Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers be able to live peacefully. We expect our Tamil brethren to join us and fight together but People like Gus always drawing the Tamil superiority card is a huge drawback on our efforts, I must say!

I think it is the time to transport the message to all, that we are all the same. Only crook politicians set us apart for their own political surivivals. That Arun Siddarth a hired cheap man, similar to that combination of” Namal Kumara to Maithree”, proved that the bugger would do anything and everything to protect his compensation packages.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_11KBAy4Q6U

Rajakashes should be made accountable for all these tricks. They are just mlechcha politicians, that would sell out their mother, if power could be gained.

Whenever I get all srilankens on TV screens these days, regardless of their age, race, religion, ethincity and all other barriers aside – the whole message they send across the globe is beautiful. Hirunika’s protests in Jaffna painted a real good picture. They were all seen like coming from a single family unit.

That proves, that people would not go after racism, if their leaders would not want them to. Rajapkashes for their political survival – had no other options but to choose racism, extremism and so called fake war victory-related the fairy tales. The very same Mahinda to have lost everything as of today- is OOH a real big success to peace loving srilankens.

The writer’s appeal for peaceful protest misses the very possible scenario of an inside job of inciting violence…for example a hired goon of a drug baron or gold snatcher can easily toss that Molotov cocktail into the works and see the resulting fireworks on Sunday afternoon. It would seem as if the mobs turned violent. Military might may not be effective as soldiers dare not kill unarmed Sinhala Buddhist civilians. If the family finds itself with their pants down, running for cover, the resulting vacuum cannot be filled by those on the fringe salivating for power in any constitutional sense. The constitution itself is a farce as it is never relied on to rob billions or free convicted murderers at will. The people are sovereign, and Sri Lanka belongs to the people, to govern as they seem fit, even if it becomes a new version of the 69 fiasco. Popular revolutions in oppressive third world countries were not always peaceful either.

Today news, MR’s relative Jaliya . W PLEADED GUILTY to defrauding SL government, by diverting and attempting to embezzle $ 332,027 in 2013, during it’s purchase of new embassy building. Charges carry a statutory maximum of 5 years in prison and potential financial penalties. Whereas every case against mafia family, relatives, there associates, cronies have been closed by Sorry Lankan’s judiciary and AG department. This being tip of an iceberg, any right minded will understand the depth of corruption committed by the Mafia family and how dysfunctional is the country and it’s judiciary, AG, administration, civil services ……. For those retards who are affected , to deny, is nothing but a joke.

Yes, soldiers and police will dare not kill unarmed Chingkalla Buddhist civilians or for that matter any unarmed Chingkallam Buddhist or Christian. However, were daring and happy to kill unarmed Thamizh civilians in their hundreds of thousands, as well as torture, bomb, and rape them, irrespective of whether they were peacefully protesting about their pathetic plight, lost and unaccounted relatives, or minding their business and seated at their home. This is still continuing. Soldiers were also very happy to forcibly acquire and steal Thamizh people’s lands, and destroy and convert ancient Hindu temples to Buddhist places of worship. Prevent Thamizh Hindus to worship at many ancient Hindu temples in the North East, as they are in the process of being converted to Buddhism.

      • 3
        1

Chingkallams knew about all this and we were very happy, so applauded all these soldiers and the ones who ordered them to do all this to the innocent unarmed Thamizh, called them ” Golden Heroes” clapped, and to show their appreciation 6.9 million of them voted for them. Not that the ones who did not vote were also not appreciative of these brave deeds done by the Chingkalla soldiers against, innocent Thamizh civilians. India applauded, the west applauded, and the UN pretended to be concerned but most probably. just talking but also silently applauding what happened to the largely Hindu Thamizh. However, Karma is a bitch, most probably heaven or god has listened to the prayers and curses of at least one of these innocent Thamizh civilians, who were deliberately killed by the Sri Lankan state and armed forces in May 2009. The very same soldiers are now so reluctant to fire on innocent or not so innocent Chingkalla civilians, as they are fellow Chingkallams. Kept quiet and gave silent approval and rejoiced danced and voted for the racists who committed war crimes, torture, rape, and large-scale killings of innocent Thamizh civilians. Thinking that joy and prosperity will come to them through these evil deeds but only the opposite happened. Evil begets Evil.

We are in dire straits, yet nothing can be done….the elections are too far away to vote these crooks and miserable failures out of office, the Rajapaksa’s have a history of being very violent to protesters, using tear gas, and killing them, they have war criminals who have killed thousands of civilians, not held accountable, given plum positions in their administration, and will not hesitate to injure and kill unarmed civilians when ordered to do so, and they all seem to be enjoying their lives of privilege, so why should they all give it up?. Apparently the Rajapaksa’s are deep into expensive business ventures, investing in salons, coffee shops, water parks, hotels, and what not, money laundered through wives, friends, family, and in laws, here and abroad. Plenty of money for all that, while the country has no money to get fuel for our electricity. Are Namal, Yosh, and Chichi, standing in long queues to get basic needs for their families?

We have heard plenty of rumors about foreign nations and investors coming in, taking over part of our tiny nation, and it seems all those nationalistic Sinhala groups like Sinha Le, and others, who attacked the Muslims, are quiet, even at the suggestion that some Arab nation may be invited to help get us out of this mess. No anger that “Muslims” may take over the country now?

“GOTA” from Day One of “Ascendency” to the “Trone” with “20 A” and the “2/3rd” majority has been engaged in “Militarization” of the Governing Machinery. It is no secret and everyone including the “6.9 million” waited in “Waiting” for the “elected “DIYASENA” to dole out all the “Goodies” from the “Golden Hands”. As times fly by, the “Expectations” were not forthcoming. Instead, the “DATA” Akka “Diyasena” slowly worked as per his agenda.

Having completed the building of the “Environment” required to establish his “Kingdom” was all this while waiting for the most desired “EVENT” to take place. A murderer who killed 250 people to get the power on a Sacred Easter Sunday using racist intelligence services, will allow non violent protests.
In Mirihana, Shavendra sent a bus load his army thugs who have well practised violence on civilians in the North and East, then started the violence
Same way army intelligence had planned Easter Sunday Bomers, they burnt their own bus to blame the people as extremists. My Tamil friends tell all these has been well practised in the North East where everyone civilian who is killed is labelled as terrorist.
Therefore lives are going to be lost in protests for sure. But anyway if these robber family continues to be in power many more will die of starvation.
By protest we will lose lesser lives to safe quard more lives

The entire Rajapakse family does not have an ounce of shame in their blood. They live in a bubble of their own. I agree with the author that Rajapakses will not go away easily unless their lives are threatened. The life threat should never happen.

What are the options available to this family? First, they will stay in power, remove Basil and invite Vasu, Gammanpilla, and Weerawansa back into their fold this is the wish of Mahinda and Namal. As long as Basil is there Namal’s chances are diminished. They will not remove Cabraal who has been in some way involved with the finances of the country since 2006 will not be removed by them as Cabraal knows all the black money dealings of this family. To tie over the financial difficulties they will promise India and USA that they will keep China and Russia away and get financial aid.

Alternatively, a National Government will be formed with the same SLPP crooks in the Cabinet, this too will be the same situ as the one I mentioned above.

The last choice they have is to declare Marshall Law and allow for military rule. The only danger here is that none of the lenders will agree to any concessions and the financial crisis will grow. To offset this they will do the same thing which I have written above with India and USA.

Another good article and brilliant analysis by Tisaranee. However, what is worrying is the survey done by the CPA. 36.3% of Sinhalese are agreeable (strongly or somewhat) to governance by the military. 60.5% of Sinhalese also think that the military is more suitable to handle public affairs in a time of crisis. And 89.9% of Sinhalese are either very or somewhat satisfied with the ongoing militarization of civil spaces. This means most Sinhalese still have not learned their lesson. They are now dissatisfied with this lot of ruling anti-minority Fascist racist Sinhalese Buddhist fundamentalists, who promised them heaven on earth, after marginalizing the Tamils and their former allies the Muslims, and now want to replace them with another bunch of anti-minority Fascist racist Sinhalese Buddhist Fundamentalists to rule the land, so that the promised Eden can be regained and the minorities kept in their place. Who did they think was ruling and advising this war criminal president that they loved and voted for and was running the affairs of the state and ran the country to the ground. Largely ex-military personnel, all racist Sinhalese Buddhist fundamentalists. Many of them were wanted for war crimes committed against the Tamils. Now they want more and more of them, as this lot of racists did not take them to paradise and want another lot similar to them, to take them there.

  • 10

    Tisaranee
You have articulated the situation quite nicely.
Rajapaksas have their strategy, of course they would, they have destroyed a nation at our expense.
Since the day they started robbing the nation, they would have been preparing for this occasion.
They will try various tactics to get away with their crimes. This is normal.
However, the question is, are we going to let them get away?
Let us look at the bright side, for once the nation is united. We have 22 million people desperately fighting to start afresh. We have a purpose, the challenge is how we are going to plan our way forward.
It can be done, it has to be done. This is not a time for sentiments or party politics. It has been done in so many countries and it can be done in Sri Lanka.
We know that they are not the smartest of people in SL. We have lots of smart people who can turn the tide.

    …Continued

  • 6
    2

    continued…

First and foremost we the citizens have to reconfigure attitudes. We have to see each other as compatriots, as peers and partners, regardless of our past experiences.
This is a new chapter, the future starts now, devoid of our mental baggage, we are all human beings who have the same needs. Thanks to the Rajapaksas, we have reached that milestone.
There is no turning back. We have no other options. We have to forge ahead and make a better future.
All hands on deck. Let us forge ahead with confidence, conscience, truth, fair play, and unity.
Let me suggest staying one or two steps ahead of them.
At this stage, it will be wise to agree on our next possible leader.
This leader cannot come from the actors who have been on the present or recent past political stage.
We need someone who is recognized by the world, someone who is experienced, and someone who is honest, without blemish.
When we decide on the next leader unanimously we can take the next step of pushing for their removal.
Military rule is not an option. It will be a continuation of the present situation. JVP, NPP, SBJ,UNP are all out of the question.

    • 0
      0

HT, this is just an opinion. Your suggestion is excellent. Because if this opportunity is not used for a complete change in our political system, there may be none in future. To succeed, public resistance should be strictly kept out of politics. People have enough and more reason to unite and continue their struggle/resistance. History indicates many of the time it’s politicians/politics which hijack such resistance to either nowhere or to a political end (exploitation by politicians for their gain). Also it’s difficult to find a united political cause but easier based on social causes. If resistance can sustain, overtime usually a leader emerges, who is genuine, walk the walk, actively participated in the struggle, accepted by many and to some extend proved his/her credentials. Example, former Polish President Lech Walesa. There are plenty examples where politicians hijacking such resistance, recent farmers agitation in India. Through out a year of resistance there were multiple attempts by different political groups, to penetrate, hijack or exploit.

As Pakistan PM Imran Khan said both Pakistan and Sri Lanka are being targetted in a Special Operation by the American DOCTOR OCTOPUS .
(DOC. OCT. is the cyborg in Spiderman Films)!
Like the CIA backed Arab Spring protestors the foreign hand behind the disaster is not named by these protestors–
Why is the American connection of the 2 Rajapakse brothers never mentioned by these so-called protestors???!

It may be a problem because Rajapaksa relative Jaliya. W today pleaded guilty to defrauding, in the U.S and will be serving maximum 5 years. In that case what do you think GR and BR are looking at??? By the way the original architect MR doesn’t belong there and you well keep him in Sorry Lanka.

So sorry, Jaliya pleading guilty must be a CIA/US conspiracy.

    Small minds discuss people
    average minds discuss events
    Great minds discuss ideas
    .
This is the time to start discussing ideas.
    .
We should all contribute, by coming up with ideas to get out of this situation.
If we continue to just only talk, nothing will happen.
This is not the time to procrastinate.
Stop bickering and put your energy to use.
Brainstorm instead of saying we have no choice.
Our choices are limited only by our lack of ideas.
Every problem has a solution, we have to formulate the solution and execute it properly.
    This is our chance.
We can not only oust the bastards, we should be able to catch them, recover our money, and punish the entire family for all the crimes they have committed.
Rajapaksas and their cronies must be put to death.

NEWS: “Lankan President Blames ‘Extremists’ For Late-Night Protest.”
How does the President know they were “extremists”? Isn’t that little too early to say that? Was there a last minute change in the date of the attack? It looks like it was done in a hurry.
What a country! The President didn’t know anything until 5,000 “extremists” walked to his private house outside Colombo!
Where were the State Intelligence officials?
Ohhh, I forgot, Intelligence officials must have been mingled with 5,000 “paid extremists” to make sure that they do the job well. I bet ex-military guys were also there to help the “extremists”.
This is exactly what I said yesterday. A protest similar to 1987 JVP riots. Burning buses, attacking the police, stoning buildings……… I am bored!!!

IF the now beggar sinhalas had a thriving economy and country they would continue the oppression of and GLOAT over the Ceylon minorities. Even in the current beggar state of the sinhalas there are some sinhalas who say ceylon tamils who were in EELAM before the arrival of Vijaya and his cohort of thugs should go to Hindustan. It is the current beggar state of the sinhalas that has given some respite to the continued thuggery rapes looting arson and murders of ceylon tamls since independence.
AS SUCH WHY SHOULD I NOT GLOAT AT THE CURRENT BEGGAR STATE OF THE SINHALAS, also considering that these beggar sinhalas used the Israelis who believe in collective punishment [like the Nazis did] in attacks against tamil civilians.
At the moment in beggar sinhala land there is collective KARMA on the beggar sinhalas!!!!!

Don’t worry Gus, gloat as much as you want. Even if SL defaults on her loans she will STILL survive. But the Tamils will not.
      .
BTW there is no such thing as collective Karma.

Is there any plans to ‘escalate’ protests orchestrated by the Rajapaksas themselves to bring foreign military into the country? There were such plans in 2019 after the Easter Sunday terrorist attack. Fortunately, it didn’t materialize as the Sinhalese remained calm. The Rajapakses have signed secret military agreements with India which is a party to the QUAD military alliance. Something is amiss here. There is surprising international media attention too. Sinhalese should not be involved in protests. If foreign military enters the country, we will never be able to send them back. Utterly unpopular, utterly corrupt Rajapaksas will go to any extreme to stay in power.
Then, there are other weird stories. Have you ever heard a majority ruling government give up all its powers and form an interim government?

    Hi EE

The CANNIBAL Rajapakses are doing the LTTE work wiping out the sinhalas by starvation and personal suicide and lack of medicines. All this comments about the Rajapakses in these websites are just pissing in the wind! The destruction will continue the sinhala barbarians descended from the Hindustan Thug Vijaya and his cohort of other Hindustan Thugs have turned on themselves !

Svenson, we can see how you are helping in promoting harmony by typing “Tamils will not survive”. Haven’t we heard and seen it all.

“On this one page alone, words from the minorities to promote harmony. Shame on the moderators.”

Don’t you think you are beginning to annoy all those rare good and vice people in this forum?

“Fascist racist Sinhalese Buddhist fundamentalists, the beggar sinhalas, the inbuilt immorality and hatred within them, the yellow pets ‘”

These names are meant for a special group that calls itself Sinhala/Buddhists, and the island as Sinhala/Buddhist country, they are the children and grandchildren of Public Racist Annagarika Homeless Dharmapala. They include soman, Eagle Eye, Wiml, Udaya, Dinesh, .. Mahinda, Gota, ….. Dayan, HLD M, …..

The rest of the Sinhala speaking people are either Sinhalese or Buddhists or Christians, and thery are mostly gullible, definitely they are not Sinhala/Buddhists Fascist, racist, ……………..

Svenson, from what I hear it is the sinhalas that are not surviving in their country as they are queuing to get out BIG TIME from sinhala land to do toilet cleaning in other countries. Tamils have left and are generally surviving well overseas. I sold a plot of land that came to me via my great grand father and was glad to get the few thousand dollars via black money out of the country as the sri lankan rupee is heading towards rubble rupee.

I get medical treatment in the country that I live that costs $2k just for the medicines and pay $20 and no payment to the medical staff. I thank the gods that I dont live in beggar sinhala land that has no money to import basic medicines for its peoples

How do you promote harmony via a media that is banned by the CANNINALISTIC Rajapakses and when the sinhala media in sinhala land and the barbaric sinhala buddhist monks it seems promote oppression of the minorities?

Take pride that you sinhalas created my mental frame of mind by your actions and why do you then complain about my attitude!

” A protest blocking a road, for instance, will allow one lane to be opened for traffic.” After abandoning Wild Fox Ranil, Gardiner Valaiththodam Sr’s daughter, The First Lady Jalani’s S-I-L, the UNP’s M/S Thug, the Super loose cannon, writing her Kautilya’s ethics for politically novice, laymen, the Masses on how to carry out a revolution against a tyrant Hitler’s government.
“This is not an argument against protests. “ Bravo! Sure……. Not at all. But this is against only one thing, that is the livelihood of humans in Langkang, permanently. (The desperation of Langkang is that the Tamil Nadu CM is talking to PM Modi, if a new wave of refugees flood in, then what to do.) Remember, the Old Rowdy King Declared just after the criminal war that “There is only one race in Langkang”? Tisaranee Gunasekara is sincerely not against people protesting against Kleptocracy government, but by hook or crook, she is against people regaining their lost sovereignty by ousting the rowdies with a revolution, not without an election where Tisaranee and Valaiththodam can manipulate the results.
She is showing the Rapist Army and black mailing the protesters by sowing fear in the minds protestors, while saying “This is not an argument against protests.”

Tisaranee is not ready to think where Leader Sheikh Mujibur’s Bangladesh was in 1971. “These protestors perhaps intuitively understand a key political truth. When the balance of power is totally asymmetrical, when your opponent owns all the might of a functioning state (which is armed to the teeth), non-violence is not just morally right; it is also politically smart.” She claims that her crocodile tears are only about Savage Indra, the Sissy, becoming an unelected president. She doesn’t give a damn about Valaiththodam Jr. Comedy Thamai! Practically she is saying, “Heroes! good that you started the protest to make my man the next president, but Idiots! you forgot to seat my man in palanquins and allow him to direct your protest, so that he can be easily made the next president”. What an astonishing surprise were Thero De Siva who went by North in his last essay and Tisaranee who went by West, but they both have met at one point, that is in Keselwaththa, Langkang. Unless Langkang’s Sinhalese wipe out the Sinhala Intellectuals (Viyathmaha) including Thero De Silva, Tisaranee Gunasekara, as well with their political masters, from Langkang, the protestors’ hard toils and sacrifices will be stolen like in USSR.

Educated people have to keep the mass informed of the difference between the revolution, protest and election. That is the only protection for them not being betrayed by Sinhala Intellectuals. Elections are under the established constitution to preserve the past order. This is the popular way democracy is kept preserved. Practically that is the only that is always used to change the team of the democratic government. Revolution is used only once in a history of time. This is used only when democracy has failed to survive. Protestors must be aware that it was 2015’s Yahapalanaya government brought in this Royal Aanduwa. Protestors must know they do not want an election or regime change, but a revolution. Protestors must make rulers understand that they cannot be pacified or fooled that the Langkang constitution authorizes protests and even the Appe Aanduwa is with them in this protest. Protestors must clearly show to Sinhala Politicians and Sinhala Intellectuals that it is they, the Sinhalese are against the shortage of food, oil, electricity after their own governments have ruled the country for 75 years, and it is not the Tamils and Muslims are carrying terrorism against Sinhala Buddhism. Remember, not one person in government or in opposition is punished for 4/21. So Sinhalese, this time, should not let the Viyathmaha hijack them.

Revolution never gets sanctioned in any constitution. Revolution is not intended to preserve the previous status quo. Rejected ones, thus, will not easily walk out of power. Destructions are always the unavoidable, unintended side effect of revolution. We are noy against minimizing destruction in a revolution, that is the need of desperate people. That destruction Is not created by the people who attempt to regain their lost sovereignty, but by the foxes & hyenas who refuse to leave even after seeing people’s uprising has started, but planning devices and implementing ideas, to continue to be in power. Tisaranee Gunasekara, Thero De Silva are the agents of these violent leaders, who black mail with violence and if the people have not heeded and have not backed off Autocrats use practical violence. This is the consultancy tyrants use to keep people under their feet, without any effort.

Remember, the Royal and Yahapalanaya governments, on 4/21/2019, jointly used the violence to fool Modayas, and seat themselves in power. Langkang has to resort to revolution after being cheated for 75 years by playing the balance game by UNP-SLFP acolytes or the so-called Sinhala Intellectual Viyathmahas. Looting, raping, murdering, injustice is culture of Langkang, created by fake election. Time to clean all that with a justified revolution.

“Imagine that a kind fate, a generous magician banishes the entire Rajapaksa clan in one fell swoop to another universe. What will that Day-after look like? Will we have sane minded people working together to haul the country out of the abyss she is in? Or will we have various opposition parties and personalities squabbling for the biggest share of the political pie? Who and what will creep into the corridors of power through the resulting cracks? “
Anything can creep into power but should be the ones already elevated them as Royals politicians by the birth of their family. A new constitution has to decide what kind of government is suitable for them and whom within them would be honest when they are in power.
