A journalist asked me: How do you see USA’s entry bar against Army Commander Shavendra Silva?
My response was: I speak on behalf of the Tamils of Sri Lanka.
The Tamil people of the North-East welcome USA’s entry bar against Shavendra Silva and his family. We wholeheartedly applaud US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s decision to declare Silva persona non grata, “due to credible information of [Silva’s] involvement, through command responsibility, in gross violations of human rights.”
Channel 4 has documented credible accusations that Silva ordered extrajudicial killings during the final phases of the armed conflict in 2009. Its televised report includes testimony that Silva relayed a command, from then-Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, to his subordinates in the Sri Lankan Army’s 58th Division: “Do whatever it takes, however it is done… (but) finish it off the way it has to be done.” This order allegedly resulted in the mass slaughter of Tamils, including both civilians and surrendering fighters—the notorious “White Flag” incident.
The USA’s entry bar on Silva therefore serves as an example for other countries to follow. This constructive measure further reinforces the international community’s duty to prosecute Sri Lankan personnel for acts that may constitute war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Sri Lanka has consistently asserted non-compliance with multiple resolutions of the UN Human Rights Council—which have directed it to establish a hybrid court and to try such alleged criminals. Those who try to paint Silva as a Hero must realise that killing of innocent civilians calling them terrorists purposely and erroneously does not amount to heroism by any means.
All personnel who bear such clear allegations of criminal responsibility must have their cases heard at the International Criminal Court or any other international venue competent to try them. The authority for the international community to prosecute such crimes is enshrined both in the doctrine of universal jurisdiction (contained in Chapter VII of the UN Charter) and in the legal procedure for implementing the Rome Statute against nationals of a non-signatory state.
Given the intransigence of three successive Sri Lankan administrations over more than ten years, the rule of law must now prevail. The Tamil People’s time for justice has come! “Kala Kala dey pala pala whey” is a Sinhala proverb. It means you reap what you sow.

What is this advocating unity among all Sri Lankans that you are talking about. Unity has to come spontaneously and not by force. It should be deep seated one and not superficial. Do you sincerely believe that all successive governments controlled by Sinhalese ever tried to forge unity or else practiced divide and rule to cover up their inefficiency and corruption. For unity, people should feel there is equality and justice. With discriminatory laws and practices in place how can you achieve equality and justice. When an equality bill was presented few years ago by Chandrika, it was totally rejected by Sinhalese MPs. With this type of behaviour of Sinhalese who think they are the sole owners and rulers of the country, taking legislative and executive measures to keep Tamils suppressed, how can you bring about unity. So without making empty rhetoric about unity, address the issue in a fair and decent manner to bring genuine unity. Statement made by Shirley Gunnel an anti-Apartheid activist about the situation in Sri Lanka is a clear indictment of racism that exists. She said ” Truth plus justice plus reparation equals reconciliation. In Sri Lanka I have not seen the truth aspect, I am not seeing the commitment to justice aspect either, and I see reparation as a branch cut off from the main stem which is the truth.” Sinhala people like you who point fingers at those expressing concerns, should be ashamed of yourselves.

Genetically the Sinhalese are descendants of Dravidians and have no Indo-Aryan DNA. Around 1450 (much before the Portuguese arrived), King Parakrama Bahu VI of the Kotte Kingdom sent his adopted son prince Sapumal Kumaraya aka Chenpaga Perumal (he later became king Bhuvanekabahu VI) to wage a war against the Jaffna king Kanagasuriya Singai Aryan to capture the Jaffna kingdom. After invading Jaffna and taking over the Jaffna kingdom, Sapumal Kumaraya rebuilt Nallur, the Jaffna Kingdom’s capital and also rebuilt the Nallur Kandaswamy Temple (note that he did not build any Buddhist temples) for the people of Jaffna. The Royal city of Nallur was originally built with four entrances. There were two main roadways and four Madurai style temples at the four gateways.
The present rebuilt temple that exist now do not match their original locations which instead are occupied by churches erected by the Portuguese. When the Portuguese occupied Jaffna after a fierce battle with the Jaffna king Cankili II, they not only demolished the Hindu temples and harassed the Hindus, but they also burnt down most of the artifacts that belonged to the Tamil Hindus.
The ‘Saraswathy Mahal’ which was the Royal Library located in Nallur was also burnt down by the Portuguese. It contained more than 90’000 rare and unique ola/palmaryh leaves manuscripts and copper plate records. (Ila/Eela or Hela Tamils did not inscribe/engrave inscriptions on stones, instead they recorded everything on ola/palmaryh leaves and on copper plates).
Whatever records that were found/collected later (ola/palmaryh leaves) were kept preserved in the Jaffna Library along with tens of thousands of books related to Tamil History, Science, Poems and lyrics, Novels, Theology and Astrology. Some of them that were translated by Arumuga Navalar, Thamotharam Pillai and Saminathaiyar were also kept in the Jaffna Library. All gone in smoke once again, completely destroyed this time by the Sinhalese mobs under JR Jayawardena’s government to deliberately and systematically erase all the evidences of the past Tamil presence in the island.
