Some of my friends were perplexed by the attitude of this government regarding the Palestinian issue. So was I. The NPP does not consist of cynical, unsympathetic and self-centered political animals. We know they are compassionate humans. How come they are not affected by the Gaza tragedy, especially by the desperate situation of the children who are starving, traumatized and killed? How come they are so sensitive about anybody saying a word against Israelis? I reflected on it.
Sri Lanka is bankrupt. Hence it is a beggar. Sri Lanka is a beggar nation. Beggars cannot choose their friends or enemies. They have no choice. Beggars do not have the luxury of taking a stand in the international fora. Sri Lanka cannot afford such luxuries and make enemies. Every dollar from anybody, even Satan, is necessary to keep the nose above water. But beggars do not have debts. We are worse than beggars for we owe the world an enormous debt. Sri Lanka is a basket case. As a State our country is a downright failure. And our national self-esteem is in tatters.
In contrast look at the Maldives archipelago, a small but a sovereign nation. In 2024, a bill was submitted to the parliament calling for a ban on entry for Israeli passport holders. The ban came into immediate effect after it was approved by parliament on 15 April 2025. They can hold their head high and take such a stand because they are neither bankrupt nor do they have unpayable debts.
Our present government is in shackles. It is not free to do as it would like to. I feel sorry for it. I have actively supported the NPP. And it is trying its best to put things right in the country. I am sure they feel as we do regarding the genocide of Palestinians. But the reality is that the government hands are tied and mouths shut. Suppose we take drastic decisions to cut ties with Israel. And Trump in retaliation raises our tariffs to 50% as he did to India for refusing to stop buying Russian oil….. (Of course, India told Trump in no uncertain terms to go fly a kite. For, India is neither bankrupt nor has it unpayable debts.) But what will happen to us? Hundreds of thousands will be out of work and the free trade zones will be shut down. Sri Lanka is just managing to keep its nose above water. A big blow like the above will surely push it below the water level and we would be sunk.
Dear brothers and sisters of my country, how did we come to this sad and humiliating situation? How did we lose our national self-esteem vis-a-vis the world? Who robbed us of our last bit of pride we had in our motherland? Sri Lankans who travel abroad experience it in the way the customs officials treat their passport; they treat it like trash.
I do not need to go into the trouble of telling you who committed this treasonable crime. It is treason for it is the betrayal of the honor of our motherland. It robbed Sri Lanka of its self-esteem as a sovereign nation. It is the highest judicial authority, the Supreme Court which declared that the Rajapakse families (Mahinda Basil and Gota) who are responsible for the destruction of this country, and I would add, the betrayal of its honor. The Supreme Court gave only a verdict but no penalty was imposed. When the judicial courts are disrespected, people get a jail term. Shouldn’t the betrayers of the good name of our motherland, who bankrupted the country and killed our national self-esteem get an adequate punishment? Instead, they get housed, paid, fed and protected, all at our expense; What a stupid, weak country is this?
The Rajapaksas and their ilk, led by Sirisena, Wickremaeinghe, Cabraal, Jayasundara and the rest robbed this country to bankruptcy. I can give you a list of their heinous economic crimes but I know you are sick of hearing them. Worse than that, they created a culture of impunity; law and order was clay in their hands. They created an upside-down culture of bad is good; corruption is for the strong and honesty is for the weak; the laziest way of making money is the ideal and hard work is for the hoi polloi. In this culture you can get away with anything, even murder, with a few phone calls and some lucre. Like when a trafficker was about to be arrested by the Narcotic Police ‘some R’ flew to Negombo to save the ‘golaya’ and exposed himself as the Drug Lord of Sri Lanka. When the most nefarious mass murder of blood and gore in the 77 years of independence was perpetrated on Easter Sunday morning 2019, most of the index fingers of the citizens were pointing at ‘another R’. In this culture you do not rob small rural banks as the JVP and the LTTE did, you go for the biggest fish, the Central Bank. One of the scoundrels of the Central Bank robbery was called Mr Clean once upon a time! But he too fell and what a Humpty Dumpty fall!
The process of regaining the lost respect for our country and finding the lost national self-esteem had begun one year ago when AKD and the NPP took over the government and launched the Grand Project, “Clean Sri Lanka”. The on-going project is all inclusive, from getting rid of the drug menace, zero corruption to refurbishing and modernizing Bus Stands, Railway Stations, reforming education and bringing back law and order to the country.
Many of the government opposition with all the criminal elements of the underworld are in fear of punishment for their past evil doings. They keep telling one another that they must unite to evade going to jail. They broadcast utter lies about the government and some You Tubers comment as if with good intention and impartiality but really with hidden malice. This is about the latest Asset Declarations hullabaloo. They say that JVP/NPP activists rationalize their getting small favors and gifts from supporters who give them willingly and JVP/NPP cadre willingly receive them. But the hitch is when the critics equate a bag of precious gems to a comb of plantains. An anonymous man willingly gives a bag of precious gems to an old grandmother who willingly takes it. They say it is the same thing as the comb of plantains. If taking the comb of plantains is not wrong then receiving the multi-million-rupee bag of gems is also not wrong. Their logic is queer and the malice is evident. When the hot topic of Asset Declarations soon becomes cool, they will find some other nonsensical topic to avoid the main issues like drugs and stolen national assets.
What they do not understand and what the JVP has not explained clearly is that it is not merely a political party like theirs. It is more than that. It is a brotherhood and a sisterhood; a sort of loose community with a common vision and goals set by serious discussions and consensus. There is no room for personal profit in their vision. It is altruistic and service oriented. And their commitment to it is deep. Consequently, they are well disciplined. Of course, 159 angels did not come and sit in the parliament. They are human. Many are novices. Some are certainly not very diplomatic. But their sincere intention is to serve the people of this country and lift it out of the shit hole the previous governments have thrown it into. And that intention is scrupulously honest and transparent. The comb of plantains or the bag of rice is only a gesture of their comradeship and friendship. Nothing more. But the bag of gems is a horse of a different color.
We believe that AKD and his parliament can retrieve the lost national self-esteem. If they cannot do it nobody will or can do it. Therefore, just as the people in a two thirds majority placed their lives in the hands of NPP and trusted them so after one year they still trust AKD and the NPP.

We are worse than beggars for we owe the world an enormous debt.
The total debt is now USD 96.5 billion. The more important metric is debt to GDP. It is 90-110% in the case of Sri Lanka. That is low, compared to developed countries. Japan, for example, has a 260% ratio. The bigger issue for Sri Lanka are the austerity restrictions put in place by the IMF. These curtail government spending as well as Central Bank money printing. The tax base then decreases, making it more difficult to pay the interest on the debt. The debt compounds over time, leading to another potential balance of payments crisis and bailout by the IMF. If you think austerity works, Argentina is on its 23rd round of IMF opium, while Greece never fully recovered. What did work is Iceland arresting bankers and kicking the IMF out ASAP. Iceland has fully recovered.

This comparison is misleading and blaming of IMF is not a solution.Sri Lanka is a very poor country which was affected by racism and religious terrorism for many decades which resulted in corruption, misuse of power, and underworld drug mafia. Unless you get rid of racism and religious terrorism, you cannot avoid economic recovery.

I am not too sure whether we had any ‘national self-esteem’ in the past or not. How do you see that it was over there…?? Or, maybe it depends on who you talk to, or the mood they were in?? And so called purpose ‘building’ it should not be the main activity by itself. If there is a thing called national esteem, then it should happen naturally. When a country follows the rule of the law, then it gets its dignity automatically. Eliminate corruption, restore law and order, streamline government procedures with transparency….. there is a long list before we grab spanners and tools to ‘fix national self-esteem’! When politicians stop running hidden agendas and work to their conscience, people begin to respond and the country naturally become prosperous. Then only what you call ‘national esteem’ will probably be restored, I guess.

Jit,
“I am not too sure whether we had any ‘national self-esteem’ in the past or not. How do you see that it was over there…?? “
That’s rather like those people who claim that living was so cheap in the 60’s, when a loaf of bread cost only 25 cents.

Yes OC, nostalgia is a wonderful thing!
I have quite often heard that ‘our ancestors lived much longer than us’ almost since I was a child. Even now! But how many of them know that we are much better off in health, life expectancy and longevity factors than our granny’s times, say, 1920s. Here’s what I found in ResearchGate about Sri Lanka’s demography in early last century……”Life expectancy at birth for males and females were 32.7 and 30.7 years, respectively for the 1920-22 period. By 2011-13, those figures rose to 72 years for males and 78.6 years for females. The decline of mortality during the past one hundred years has occurred at all ages and for both sexes…..”

The ‘PEOPLE’ need this NPP Government to continue its agenda. That is why a ‘2/3rd’ majority was given. The NPP must understand that not all ‘2/3rd’ of the votes are from their ‘Vote Bank’, but are composed of the votes of rival parties. That basic understanding must be borne in mind at all times.
The latest ‘Upheaval’ of ‘Declaration of Assets & Liabilities’ was created solely by the legislators (Ministers & Juniors) on the Government side. That was a legal requirement in terms of the ‘Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2023’, which replaced three Legislations that were in the ‘Statute Books’. Once the declarations have been made, ‘WHY’ go to explain, in public, how their ‘Assets’ were built? The simple answer to those raised questions was – “Go to the relevant Judicial Authorities and place your concerns, and we will account for and answer the queries. We will abide by the decisions of such Judicial Authorities”.
These government Ministers and MPs have created such ‘Mayhams’ now and then by being unable to apply brakes on their tongues. For example, a Minister, when questioned by a TV presenter about ‘Assets’, asked in return – Ai Oyalata Pang The’ (Why is it ‘Bread’ for you) I do not absolve even the President of this type of ‘Lose’ talks.

As we all know, their ascent to power as this country’s next generation did not happen overnight; rather, a carefully crafted false public image was created to deceive easy prey.
It is now clear that the government does not benefit from coming color, whether it be through international travel or anything else; transparency and accountability are destroyed more than ever before.
Rather than providing exemplary examples to their colleagues in the parliament and cabinet today, the ministers with “inflated titles such as walking library” shamelessly avoid answering their questions in public discussions.
Despite the fact that the parliament has a large number of young, recent graduates, this situation is currently breaking records.

The next ‘Episode’ in this drama is the accusations directed at the Director General of the CIBAC, Ranaga Dissanayake. He has successfully come out of one accusation that his child was admitted to the Royal College in Colombo. There were a few cases against him that have been ‘Withdrawn’. The latest accusation is that he served in a ‘Legal Committee’ of the JVP. This will be cleared soon because that is a blatant ‘LIE’.
The other aspect is the uphill task of ‘Cleaning’ the Police and the AG’s Department. It has already come to light how the ‘Law enforcement’ and ‘Security Forces’ have had ‘DEALS’ (supply of arms and ammunition) with the ‘Underworld Mafia’ (both drugs and murders), and several high-ranking officials have been taken into custody.
Yesterday, when the case against Namal R (Kris Deal) was taken up in the courts, it was revealed that the previous files from the Magistrate Court have not been sent over to the High Court, and some documents relevant to the preliminary investigation are ‘MISSING”. These are a few instances of things that an average person would think of as acts of ‘Sabotage’. Can you blame such an opinion from being formed?
To make my comment short, I would ask the Government to pull up its socks and get the ‘Team’ to guard their tongues and tone down on ‘Rebuttals’ to critics and look at ‘SERIOUSLY’ and ‘ASSESS’ the activities of a ‘DEEP STATE’ in operation. Such action will reshape our ‘National Self-Esteem’.

As a neutral commenter, I think it is obvious that if the accusations made against RD (the Director General of the CIBAC) turn out to be true, the current government is in for a major catastrophe.

If someone was once affiliated with a JVP ideology and later broke away (Waruna Rajapakshe, Nandana Gunathilaka, Priyankara Mahamaudalige or the like) from it for some reason, I do have some faith in them to provide you with more insightful information.
For a while now, I’ve learned to get additional information from people who once supported JVP ideology but later left it, rather than joining the bangwagan like the mercy cows would. According to what I’ve read recently, there are many of them who are more intelligent and thoughtful than Wimal-Weerawanse-Type.
Similar methods are used in scientific projects that use one beetle to fight off other beetles, such as when it comes to the harm that coconut beetles cause to coconut farms. In addition, it is well known that new mosquito breeds have been developed for a long time to fight against diseases like dengue and malaria, which are spread by insects in afflicted areas.

“We believe that AKD and his parliament can retrieve the lost national self-esteem.”
In 1958 when we massacred over 1000 Tamil people in Colombo and destroyed or burnt hundreds of the businesses of Tamils and transported thousands of Tamil people from Colombo to North and East, didn’t we loose our self-esteem? We continued the same self esteem from 1961, 1971, 1977, 1981, and 1983 didn’t we lose our self-esteem? When you put some youths in the jail and then opportunity came took the eyes of the prisoners in the daylight or burn the library in Jaffna, where was self esteem? All this happened before the war? This country never had self – esteem. The rulers were the slaves of the external powers. They changed their religion for their own benefits. They changed or used again the religion for their own benefits.
JVP also had racism and used the religion to come power. They have not changed but use this opportunity to their own purposes. The self-esteem should come from the heart and brain. They are afraid to tell the truth because they need votes. As it pointed out earlier that majority of the votes come from those who supported the past failures. They are waiting for the opportunity. It is very simple in this country to cheat people using the religion.

Under HE AKD, the law is now supposedly equal for everyone, but why don’t we see it actually benefiting the members of the ruling party?

The majority of income declarations appear suspicious and do not follow the proper procedures. Every single hair in the soup would have been pointed out as a grave error if they had been in the opposition. Even though their rhetoric is continuing at the same rate, this is turning into a mockery of justice that is impossible to see stopping. Are we expecting this “system change”? Why do people end up permanently blindfolded? Is our genetic makeup to blame for that?
