Our Moment Of Destiny

By David Blacker –

David Blacker

I think every generation faces its own particular challenges; but the greatest and most defining ones are those of morality and courage. That moment, if missed, condemns that generation — and often many that follow — to a world far more unpleasant and evil than we would wish it to be. For many in the free world of the late 1930s, that moment came with the invasion of Poland and the bombing of Pearl Harbour. It was a moment when my grandfather’s generation had to decide if they would simply stand on the sidelines or go out and fight someone else’s cause. Fortunately for them, the choice was easy; their respective governments took the right fork, and millions of young men — my grandfather included — went out into the deserts, the jungles, and across the seas to ensure that tyranny and racism would not shape our world. For 1960s America, the moment of destiny was in fact a place — Vietnam — and a moral choice. America made its decision, albeit a little late for millions of Vietnamese.

But when that hour of destiny arrived thirty years ago in Sri Lanka, our parents’ generation failed us. For decades, they had watched as extremist rhetoric leveled at the Tamil community gave way to physical violence. They stood by as our constitution was changed to remove any protection the minorities had a right to under law. They were silent when the nation’s leadership was silent on the racism and hatred that was all around them. They did nothing when their elected politicians in fact helped instigate the violence that climaxed in the orgy of assault, murder, rape, and destruction now known as Black July. For thirty years we have wondered how our parents could have been so docile, so shortsighted, so wrong in their choices. We have watched our country torn apart by suicide bombers and child soldiers, by tanks and artillery. We have watched a hundred thousand die, because our parents didn’t say “stop!”

Thirty years later, the clock is back at five minutes to midnight; racists are calling for violence, for this country to be only for Sinhalese Buddhists. They are calling for a tiny minority to change their lifestyles or leave; they are calling for their right to worship to be curbed. And they are threatening violence if their demands are not met. Our government is at best silent; at worst in collusion. Our police force is standing by while Muslims are attacked. There are no arrests. There is no condemnation. There is no justice.

The last time this happened, I was eleven years old; an uncomprehending child. I grew up to wonder why my father who could ride a motorcycle through a wall of fire to get me home that July, hadn’t been able to stop what was done to the Tamils and to my country. Was he scared? Didn’t he care? I ask the same questions from myself today. Why am I doing nothing as my country heads towards the flames again. I ask it of my friends — especially the Buddhists — my colleagues, my girlfriend. None of you are racists, I think. None of you believe that Muslims must be persecuted and harassed. Why are you not speaking out? Why are you not protesting? What will it take? Or is there nothing that will drive us out of our homes and on to the streets to brave the thugs and the tear gas, the water cannon and the bullets? Have we no fucking shame?

I feel ashamed right now; ashamed of my government; ashamed of my friends; ashamed of my country. More than anything, I am ashamed of myself. I have never felt this way about my country, and I never thought I would, but I feel it now. And I hate feeling this way. In the worst of the war, I told myself that it wasn’t my fault; that I hadn’t chosen this war to fight. But this is now. This is me. This is us. This is our country and our moment of destiny is here. Why are we doing nothing?

      Feeling is not enough anymore.

We must take the streets, the stage and social media platforms back from Ethno-religious fascists running around promoting hatred in our country.

Sri Lanka does not belong to blood thirsty hatemongers. She belongs to all of us.

        Way to go Ben Hurtling,

Then Sri Lanka can go the way of Iraq, Egypt, Libya etc., and we will be rid of the Rajapaksa’s for good. I’m with you on this all the way :-)

So now you see the light,
we’ve got to stand up for the Right (to be different)
      Get up, Stand up,
      stand up for your rights!
      as Bob Marley sang

we need to stand up against the Balu Sena
and their rotten and paranoid patron saints
      the Barbaric Rajapassa military dictatorship
whose endgame is DIVIDE, DESTROY Lanka’s multicultural social fabric and RULE..
      NOW YOU SEE THE LIGHT!

You were probably born with THE cap, the one worn by dunces. However, that would be too nice a category for someone boasting about stacking (Tamil women’s) bodies like so much firewood!

You seem ignorant of the saying “if the cap fits…” It’s hilarious to see you talk about dunces just to have the last word. As for bodies, that’s all they are, regardless of whether they were Tamil or women. You should ask yourself why there were so many women fighting. Where were all you men; busy running away to become keyboard warriors? :D

Darkness Before Dawn. To many of course Lanka seems like a very dark place indeed right now, with racist “factions” endeavouring to “take over” at all costs.

Lanka’s destiny is in the hands of Lankans. They can either shape it to prosper or destroy the dawn of window of opportunity in 2009. Lack of leadership and justice within the country will benefit those countries who are vying to see Lanka as a failed state. The sun will not rise until the Lankans rise up peacefully and demand accountability from their elected incompetent officials.

It is the belief that change is not yet possible for whatever reason, and so one leans back and resigns to… waiting. Waiting that somebody else comes along and does the changing for us.

It was Lee Iacoca who thundered “Where the hell is public outrage”
Men like David Blacker will be remembered for having raised their voices – loud and clear – when fear and cowardice seem to have kidnapped what should be our collective conscience. When Tamils were de-housed, burnt in their vehicles and massacred society kept almost silent. The occasional regret, the casual word of sympathy there was – now and then. But it did not take the form of a protest representative of the whole of society. When the Rabbis of Germany were attacked in an instance or two in Germany recently, many German cities went on night vigils and expressed their collective indignation and shame. The Dogs of War won here in 7/83 and the country was subject to global condemnation – irrespective of the boast of 2,500 years of you know what.

The attacks and harassment of Muslims is a shame on all of us. The State’s collusionist inaction to arrest the leading offenders makes a mockery of our justice system. If the Muslims find themselves in a condition where their women and children – and indeed men – fear to go out on their normal business or livelihood because their lives are in danger, we have failed as a society. Our system of governance is meaningless. The regime can wind up the perpetrators on one side as collusionists and on the other come on TV and plead for unity and peace. But the deception is far too transparent.

Mother Lanka bleeds again. The law of the jungle has taken over – once more. If Muslims feel unsafe – what right have the resgt of us to feel safe?

This was what Albert Einstein said many moons ago:

“The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”

        David Blacker’s Tryst With Destiny

Long years ago we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledge, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially.

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world was sleeping, DAVID BLACKER was woken by his conscience, to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance.

It is fitting that at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedication to the service of DAVID BLACKER and his people and to the still larger cause of humanity.

[The above extract is copied and adapted for this special occasion from a speech by Jawaharlal Nehru’s “A Tryst with Destiny” on August 14 1947]

“The Nittaewo are a lost race of dwarfish men (the ancestors of Rajapakse brothers) said to have lived in the Mahalenama region now within the Yala East Intermediate Zone and the Tamankaduva area. These folk are believed to have been exterminated by the Veddas about 250 years ago”.

They were first mentioned by Pliny the elder, near the beggining of the Christian Era. In 1887 Hugh Nevill , a British Explorer brought out recent evidence of the warfare between the small primitive Veddahs who are bigger than the Nittaewo lived in the Leanama. Their name was taken from ‘Nishada” the name given to the Aryan invaders of india the males are around 3-4 feet tall the females are smaller they walk upright and have no tails.

The ‘Native’ Veddahs apparently chased them into a cave and set fire to it with brushwood and this was said to have killed them all off in the 18th century.

[He was the office assistant to the Government Agent in Kandy; but his health having broken down, he returned to England in 1864. Whilst in the service he studied Sinhalese, and more especially Pali, under the guidance of the aforementioned Buddhist scholar, Yatramulle Thera. In 1869 he published, in the Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, an annotated text of the Pali ‘Khuddaka Patha’, with an English translation, and in 1872 he issued the first volume of his well known Pali Dictionary. In the same year he was appointed Sub-librarian at the India Office, and early in the next year he accepted the appointment of Professor of Pali and Buddhist literature at University College, London. The second volume of his Pali Dictionary appeared in 1875, for which he was awarded by the Institute of France the Volney prize of 1876. Sidatsangara-sannaya. I have always lived in reality, unlike you, Gamini. The only thing unusual here is that our opinions happen to coincide on this topic. I can assure you that you will reverse your opinion when we differ in opinion. That is not reality. That is your convenience.

Gamini´s comments in general are facts but his love affair with RW and some other senior UNPers are far from understanding. I personally believe, Gamini (Mr Wickramratne)could be close relative of RW :))))

If one would listen to what Dambare amila thero spoke out yesterday, how many times the opposition has stayed mum EVEN if the country is burning…..

And secondly the fairy tales stammered by him in terms of support given by the US and India in elemination of the Ltters in the war – are all his made stories. This one would become clear if FOLLOW the discussions with Dr. Subra Swamy on Indian TV.

Current govt has not even appointed a well conversant lanken envoy to the US – to continue such secrecies. Jaliya – president´s cousin is just a VOICELESS incompetent candidate as any 10 year old woud grasp it within few seconds – listening to his reactions in bilateral discussions held between the two nations.

David if you had lived in reality, your opinion would not have changed to coincide with mine on this topic, as my stand right along has been the same. So it is you who had to change, that all comment posters seem to have appreciated judging from their comments. I have never allowed convenience and opportunism to get the better of me as some others have done. There is only one truth in life and that truth will not vary according to different beliefs or the different ethnicity of Humans. You should be glad that many are willing to accept you to their fold after all what you have said and done. Therefore on your part their should be lament and regret because others have seen the vile you mention now from the beginning. So good luck!

As for Samson Gunaratne, your inference of character is not right. Further, if you are basing your belief on the LTTE war, on Dr. Subramaniam Swamy, may I remind you he is an agent of the CIA himself and in their pay. Why don’t you seek your own intuition and ask yourself, why the LTTE buried all their heavy artillery if they were to fight a War? Why the LTTE did not fight the last, from their strong hold Kilinochchi where they had bunkers to hide and access to their buried weapons, but chose a beach front with no place to hide and with no access to their buried weapons? Do you believe that VP only helped MR to become the President only to be liquidated in this manner? Who cheated whom will surface as time ticks on and why the Tamil Nadu kept quiet then, for the assurances given by the Centre and the US who paid them lavishly with the PROMISE that the Tamils in the North will be delivered. At least now do you see why the turmoil in Tamil Nadu realizing they have been taken for a ride just like how VP was taken to Nandikaddal?

              Gamini,
Just to add to your last para, It perplexes me that being the strategist he was, VP, did not have enough brains to size MR. After all VP helped MR by asking his henchmen not to vote for Ranil and later he reneged. So trying to surrender would have been suicide. Knowing he had to face his last moments, had he misplaced the cyanide capsules? Would it not have been better to see his family go with their cyanide caps?

            • 0
              0

Jamal it is the US and India that supplied the life blood to the LTTE and VP for the thirty years. Therefore their orders, VP could not have resisted. VP would not have placed his trust on MR, but he would have had to go with the assurances given by his benefactors the US and India only to be eliminated in toto.

My opinion has not changed, Gamini. It is only your understanding that has changed, and that too only momentarily; because you happen to agree with me. I know my own mind, so please don’t try to tell me what my opinion is. If I needed that, I would have requested you to write this piece instead. But if it makes you feel better to make this claim, I’ll leave you to it rather than wasting my time trying to explain what is quite plain.

    David Blacker,

Well said. The MR government has lost its way. It is cohabiting with evil and pretends it does not see evil. It is becoming acceleratingly evil. The end of the war, should have signalled a new approach to governance. MR held out the hope that it would be so. MR inherently evil and beyond redemption? is MR a captive of the very forces that brought him to power? Has MR mistaken bricks, cement and steel as replacements for good governance?

He has dissappointed those of us who believed that he would be the one to turn this country around. Unfortunately, he is turning it on its head. Everything that is wrong is being projected as right.

We were not wrong to hope. He has failed us in a shameless manner! Where do we go from here? What are the choices we have? We are in a cul-de-sac as a country and as communities!

Well, why don’t you do something then? I really appreciate the sentiment, David (and you too Jack Point), but please do get off your butts and DO something. This is a great start, but more, much more is needed. We are ready to help. Can I suggest one thing? The racism of the middle class to me is what is really scary. I am a Muslim that does not really “look” like one – i.e no beared/hijab. So I seem to attract all the weirdos at dinner parties who want to spill their hearts out about those awful Muslims and I am frankly sick of it. They dont seem to realize that the underbelly of the sentiment that they are stewing in is ethnic violence. You are a part of their Zeitgeist, David so please, write your heart out!!!

Indeed Mr.Blocker is trying to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds. Not once does he mention the name of his lord and master Mr.Gotabaya who is responsible for cultivating extremist groups like Bodu Bala Sena, Sinhala Rawaya and Power of Ravana. Why didn’t Mr.Blocker speak out when Mr.Gotabaya used white vans to abduct Tamils, Muslims and Sinhalese? Why didn’t Mr.Blocker speak out when journalists were killed or abducted by the present government? Why didn’t Mr.Blocker speak out when Tamil civilians were bombed by the armed forces? Why only now?

Well said David Blackler. Many are asking the same question – why indeed are the majority silent and unable to show their outrage? Racism is best nipped in the bud. The majority MUST make a stand and reject any sign of racism and hatred raising it’s head in this tiny country. Hate speeches inciting violence against any religion in Sri Lanka, MUST be dealt with sternly. The criminals who were arrested for this violence have already been patted on their heads and released. The people must make their displeasure known.

Well said. The least we can do is to speak out against violence and injustice.

The price of apathy towards public affairs is to be ruled by evil men.
    – Plato

The majority fail to realise what ails the country. It is not the Tamils, Christians or the Muslims. It is the evil leaders who distort the teachings of Buddhism to suit their ends. And it is the majority who remain silent when injustice is done to an individual.

The persecution of opposition figures like General Fonseka, the impeachment of the Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranaike, the abduction of two opposition activist, the killing of Lasantha, The abduction of Ekneligoda all come under this category. We are digging our own grave as a nation.

‘The racism of the middle class’. Absolutely true. The working class live together, work together and die together-they’re just trying to keep body and soul together as the COL keeps rising. The middle class of course, dont want any part of violence-that’s victorian hypocrisy. The covert racism (anti-muslim) is pretty overt at times!

You are not alone David. We do little things against rising head of racism; like reporting racism in FB post, unfollow FB racist posts and also speak whenever the opportunity arise.
However there is no collective force to stand up against the state sponsored racism. The opposition is dead as a leaf.

We need to blame the mainline media too. They side with the GoSL for their benefit.

However there were many non Tamils who helped them even risking their own lives during the 83 violence. My parents and my uncle did help many of their Tamil friends and even unknown people were protected from mobs. We can not blame a whole generation for inaction.

Only possible thing is to pray to God ‘Please give us a leader with wisdom’.

    David Blacker

I agree 1972 constitution was a terrible mistake in not enshrining the equality of all citizens irrespective of their ethnicity or religion. Drafting a new constitution was necessary to throw off the vestige of colonial power in Soulbury Constitution and fully restore the sovereignty of the Sri Lankan people. But it should have been done with the participation of all communities and some provision similar to Section 29[2] should have been enshrined in the new constitution for the protection of the rights of all citizens as equals in a secular state. Instead the opportunistic politicians gave special status to Buddhism and fundamentally altered the character of Sri Lankan state. From that day our country has been descending into this hellhole of ethnic and religious strife and violence.

On 20 May 2009 it looked like the country was at last ready to renounce the path of destruction and take a turn towards a better future through reconciliation in a pluralist Sri Lanka. But increasingly it looks like not only the Rajapakse regime missed that historic opportunity due to its thirst for power, it is determined to turn it into a point of no return. Unless there is a paradigm shift, not only among the rulers but among all people, towards a secular and multi-ethnic Sri Lanka I don’t see any hope.

        http://www.ceylontoday.lk/16-28880-news-detail-two-suspects-enlarged-on-bail.html

Why the responsible authorities act consecutively to satisfy Ministers and the President ?

In Waragoda Killing, they had prima facie evidence how the Mervin´s secrataries were involved in the plan of the shooting.

What would be the answer of Minister of Justice in this regard, what do you think about the reacions of minster of justice in this regard ? Why the country´s alarming cases like this end up in this way ?

Why do you guys think about justice of this kind further ?

    CT Editor,

Time to accommodate more David Blackers on CT and retire those Jehan Pereras, Rajiva Wijesinhas, Charith Ratwattes etc.

They waste too much precious space on CT columns.

Why don’t you guys have an editorial policy where you accommodate more of those writers who are obviously popular as they attract a lot of comments and leave out those who don’t?

You sound to be know-all, but I believe Rajiva has somewhat opened up in his last few articles. It is simply wrong to compare his with that of Jehan Perera and Charith Rat :(

CT has been the only forum us to express our views. So I respect them a lot today than had been earlier.

Our moment with Destiny, is a timely expose of what is in store for us Sri Lankans, going up this alley of hatred and bigotism. The stark reality is that the blame should be squarely placed on the ruling party politicians who have brought this country to it knees. Conceipt, egotism, sense of superiority and arrogance are all the ingredients that add up to this cauldron of hate, bigotry and chauvinism.

It is clear that these are just smokescreens to sidetrack public attention through crystalization of all negative forces against governments own misgivings and shortcomings, and diverting those energies towards causing ethnic strife between communities. The high COL with electricity charges to go up by an unprecedented 60%, entry of biggest and richest Casino operators, setting up of Red light districts or even more night clubs, Liquor set to flow freely, making SL the ‘Bangkok of Asia’. Sex tourism is uppermost in their minds. If only these monks were NOT kept busy, all their attention and wrath would have been turned on the government, against all these non-Buddhist values, which would make the government buckle under pressure, and even loose their prestige they earned, as war victors amongst ordinary folk. Sadly, what a price the Muslims have to pay for a cover up of Government’s own ambitions and follies.

This article should have been posted on April 1st, to celebrate April Fool’s Day. Here is David Blacker’s real “moment of destiny”:

““I myself have helped dispose of (undressed) bodies in this way, and we did make crude juvenile jokes. We were all just 19 or 20 years old, and you joke about everything if you don’t wanna go insane. Many of us had never even seen a real naked woman before, so obviously we commented, even though they were dead. It isn’t a polite tea party, but it isn’t a war crime either.” – David Blacker

I’m sure the mothers of these daughters would like to know why he didn’t feel “ashamed of my government; ashamed of my friends; ashamed of my country” as he abused the corpses of these poor women who fought for a cause much greater than Blacker’s shallow mind could ever hope to contemplate.

Make no mistake. We have all seen the CH4 tape (whose authenticity Blacker has fully denied on this website). We need to realize that Blacker probably engaged in some of the activities shown on that tape, as the quotation in italics indicates.

For gods sake Lester, give the guy a break. He says he was only 20 at that time.I can still remember how wild and immature I was at that time.He has come out with his thoughts in this article and is entitled to do so.

The LTTE had many woman combatants. The army did not have. Why did the LTTE put so many in the front line?Instead of blaming them for that you are blaming some 20 year olds who undress the dead bodies in an environment where ferocious battles have taken place and many of their fellow soldiers have been killed by these females. The soldiers will think of these females as enemy soldiers regardless of their gender.Any way blacker has not said he abused the corpses, only that they were undressed. Some top brass in the army seem to have a mania to give such orders.I remember even all the men who took part in the Anuradhapura air force attack were undressed and dumped in a truck. The rank and file have to follow the orders given, because this is the army.Instead of blaming 20 year olds blame those who give such orders. There is something called command responsibility and the culprits are sometimes at the highest level, not the lower rungs. For example the talk is that prabha’s son was killed by the orders given by karuna,so a foot soldier would have no choice but to do it.

      • 0
        0

        @ Shankar,

You are a first-class dolt if all you think Blacker did is make a few jokes about nude corpses. Have you not SEEN the CH4 tapes? The sick perverts took pictures with the bodies. Hundreds and hundreds of photos as if they were at a beach resort. Obviously, from the wounds on the bodies, many of the women were raped and tortured beforehand while still alive. This is the kind of thing Sinhalese (in fact, any civilized being) should be ashamed of, not what their fathers generation thought about Vietnam 60 years ago.

        • 0
          0

Lester, remember what I mentioned about command responsibility.Don’t just blame ordinary foot soldiers for all this, then you are letting those who gave the orders off the hook.

There are obviously people higher up who need psychiatric treatment.Remember i mentioned that even all the men who took part in the vavuniya air force base attack were stripped and put on public display right in the heart of the town with all the people gawking at them. There is obviously some sick minds at the top and we can see from the sequence of events after the war they are still running strong. These men were not raped or tortured just because they were stripped, however you may be right that some women who surrendered would have been raped and tortured.Don’t just jump to conclusions that David also would have taken part in it.There are good soldiers and bad ones too.

I blame the LTTE for sending so many women to their deaths while prabha, pottu etc waited 24/7 in bunkers. It has been always the otherway about in our tamil culture, men go out and fight and the mothers give their blessings to the sons and farewell them. The mother considers it her duty to provide sons for battle and her son is supposed to look at an incoming arrow without blinking. It is a damn disgrace that it became topsy turvy with LTTE top rankers hiding and women fighting for them.Ask yourself did the sinhalese men do that?

By the way from the tone of your comment where you weep crocodile tears for tamil women,I discern that you are a tamil masquerading as a sinhalese.Am I correct?By putting fuel on the fires of this sinhala muslim tension you may be thinking the tamils can gain something from it.

So just because there are some pictures on CH4, Lester/Heshan (who btw applauds Hitler for the Holocaust, and for what’s being done to the Muslims today) has decided that I am the perpetrator :D I challenge Heshan/Lester to prove anything that he accuses me of. I won’t hold my breath on that, because this individual has actually claimed that the US won the Vietnam War, that Hitler won WW2, that North Korea isn’t a member of the UN, and that Ranil Wickramasinghe entered parliament by magic. Soldiers aren’t given a free pass in combat. They are obliged to follow the Geneva Conventions . During the last phases of the war in 2009, the SLA committed war crime after war crime. Why do you think Gothabaya imposed a media blackout? Why do you think Mahinda is a pariah in the West right now?

In any event, Blacker has spent years denying the SLA committed any war crime. What makes you think he changed his mind now? Ask him if the CH4 tapes are real, or his opinion of the Darusman Report.

I do not agree with you when you say that Mr.Blocker has changed for the better. He is just an opportunist who has hitched himself to the anti Bodu Bala Sena and anti racist wave that has mobilised the rich and the middle class into speaking out for once. Mr.Blocker just wants to add his name to the long list of Colombo and internationally based Sri Lankans who have started to write articles denouncing what the BBS are doing. As I said in a previous comment, not once does he point a finger at MR and Gotabaya who are covertly supporting these extremist groups. Mr.Blocker is nothing more than an articulate hypocrite. Do not be hoodwinked.

I wrote the following comment few days ago, please read carefully:

              “Sri

You should congratulate David for him having a girl friend.
Probably her influence had made David to change. Changed, has he?
              April 2, 2013, 11:45 pm”

              You say

“I do not agree with you when you say that Mr.Blocker has changed for the better.”

My point in that comment was:

“Give him enough time to reflect on his life and past”.

              You say:

” He is just an opportunist who has hitched himself to the anti Bodu Bala Sena and anti racist wave that has mobilised the rich and the middle class into speaking out for once.”

What is in it for him to hitch on the band wagon?

We will never know, one day David Blacker might become a self appointed champion of the down trodden. Even he might call for a comprehensive independent credible investigation into war crimes perpetrated since April 1971.

              Let us keep hope alive.

I do agree that anything is possible in the future. Paul of Tarsus was a Jew who had Roman citizenship and tried to stamp out Christianity until he had a vision on the Road to Damascus. From then on he became a missionary, spreading the message of Christianity. He also wrote a large part of the New Testament.

Who knows, maybe Blocker of Colombo may have a similar vision while travelling on the A9 road and denounce the excesses of the armed forces and the GOSL and fight for the rights of Tamils and not only that of the Muslims? :D

Soon after he got his thrill,he deserted the army and escaped abroad.

IMO, he is just deflecting attention away from 2009. Not a single Muslim has been physically harmed. Meanwhile, Blacker’s buddies in the SLA are busy terrorizing Tamils in the North and East under the guise of “rehabilitation” and “resettlement.” Most of the problems you see now stem from an overblown defense budget. Of course, when you cut the defense budget, people like Blacker become irrelevent.

Why should I feel shame at burying the bodies of terrorists? I am proud of my service in the war. Shouldn’t you be ashamed, Lester/Heshan, that your only issue with the above action is that the dead were not Muslims.

Using your logic, since you have praised the attacks on Muslims in SL, we can realize that you probably have participated in attacks such as the one on Fashion Bug. Since you have praised Hitler for the Holocaust, and the US for Vietnam (a war you claim they won because they killed so many Vietnamese), I hardly think your hypocrisy can be approved by anyone but the likes of Dev, who’s character we have also seen more than enough of on this site.

No need to confuse me with one of your numerous bizzare multiple personality alter egos, as see saw on this website not long ago. Furthermore, no Muslim has been physically attacked by Sinhalese in SL after 2009. On the other hand, you need to answer for your involvement in the desecration of bodies and the alleged murder of Red Cross Workers, both of which are serious war crimes. It’s not difficult to see the hypocrisy in your shallow piece.

        Dear Srilal,

The only way to “move on” is to disband the army, offer the Tamils a federal solution, and prosecute those responsible for war crimes, to the maximum extent possible. Blacker does not address any of these issues in his article; he merely goes on a tangent to deflect attention away from the atrocities he and the SLA are responsible for. Drawing analogies to Vietnam and World War II is particularly absurd.

        • 0
          0

          Dear Lester ,

Disbanding the army, punishing the war criminals etc are the last in the” must do list ” Lester .
To be realistic, Before thinking that far we will have to change the system, it’s the root cause of all the evil things happenings in SL , Lester i for one seek justice for 1971, 1989/1990 and 2009 victims. Yes Tamil issue needs urgent answers , thanks to our narrow minded Sinhala Buddhist chauvinistic politicians/pundits ,whether we like it or not , sooner or later the international community will get involved and may provide a far compromising solution than the moderate Tamils asking for .
talking of DB , we all need to understand the back ground and the circumstances , so no point in repeating the same thing over and over , DB has every right to express his views , most of the times I don’t agree with him , but on this topic , he speaks for all of us , why can’t you appreciate that ! Dear Lester please tell, what exactly do you expect DB to do ? Praise the government, just ignore or add fuel to the raging inferno?

            @Srilal,

I understand where you are going. But Blacker is not sincere. He blames the government and police, but not the military. He is ashamed of the government and country, but not the military . The government and police need reform, but the military is the one responsible for the war crimes. Gothabaya gave the orders to shoot hospitals, and to shell hospitals, schools, and NFZ’s. Gothabaya is not part of the government. He is part of the military . In fact, he is the de-facto head of the military , after the Commander-in-Chief.

So what has Blacker done? He has very cleverly shifted blame away from where it needs to go, without touching the organization that harbors the most war criminals.

Unless you a total retard, Lester/Heshan (which you have proven many a time) you would have understood that the above article is about the anti-Muslim racism (which you have supported on this site) and has nothing to do with the military. It is quite telling that you wish to divert the discussion away from this ;)

And GR isn’t part of the military, you fool. Even a child would know that a civil servant isn’t part of the military. Has your stupidity no limit?

              Blacker/Heshan/Siva Sankaran,

Thanks for confirming that your only motive is to deflect attention away from the military. You need to inform the readers that the SLA always carried a humanitarian charter in one hand, and a lotus petal in the other, all the way from Mullaitivu to Kilinochi. Those artillery shells falling on the Tamils in the NFZs was just a bad case of LTTE diarrhea.

Heshan/Lester, why are you ashamed of what you said on Groundviews? And how is the military part of the BBS attacks on Muslims? GR isn’t in the military. You wishing he was won’t make it so. The Defense Secretary is part of the Civil Service. Lol, this is a great addition to your claim that the British head of state is the PM, and that North Korea isn’t part of the UN, and that Japan hasn’t a military :D

I wish this should also be published in any other accessable media in all other langauges. Right at the moment, they the rulers stay as if they are deaf – that is their mechanisms to keep everytihng under control – but will be good enough to stay further in power. Time will show all of us, no longer, the masses will realize all these.

We can’t David, The BBS’s BFFL Don David Hewavitarane has made sure we will live as is, murdering each other as we cleanse the holy land of all rascals and vagabonds before turning on our selves.

Your Brothers in Arms, the Muslims, who helped the GOSL through home guard duties, intelligence gathering ( you know, that a Muslim home guard unit is accused of the Muttur Aid Workers Massacre ) in the conflict with the LTTE, are now at the receiving end of the Holy Warriors.

If Gota et al think they can on-off the BBS switch, they are in for a surprise.

If I may remind ourselves, the ethno-centric language policies introduced by a democratically elected, left leaning Govt ensured a vibrant Burgher community and then a Malay community to leave the motherland. The Tamils, stayed, fought politically and militarily and lost. Now it’s the turn of the Muslims. Then it will be the turn of the Sinhala Christians, then the Kandyans and then on each other.

Let events play out as is, it it is only the nature of things in the motherland.

      Yes Viswajith,

We are all natures fodder even as we eat plants and animal as our fodder. People too are politicians fodder and politicians too will become people’s fodder. Nature being both mindless and mindful will take its course as man is not superior to nature but an integral part of nature used and abused by it to re-balance and recycle itself. LTTE debacle was foreseeable even before Saddam Hussein was hung yet what could we or anyone have done to prevent it?

      • 0
        0

The LTTE lost the plot along the way.

In hindsight, RW’s peace process could have avoided all the carnage, if the LTTE quietened their martial activities during the peace process and settled for political autonomy.

This would have allowed the LTTE to be converted to a police force or join the Army and strengthen the now maligned constitution. In today’s situation the Muslims, who helped the Govt and the Sinhala Catholics, who don’t give a damn for Tamils are on notice. Even the Srilankan Cricketers are being threatened over the IPL issue by the Buddhist Monks.

The following is an extract from a previous comment relevant to your response.

There is quite often some sense of honour even amongst thieves, thugs, and ruffians and even would be revolutionaries. Relatively speaking the personal life of Adolf Hitler showed greater sense, honour and courage than VP in not fathering any children and in the conduct and manner of his exit from life.

In contrast VP extended his life span by about 19 by the elimination of Rajiv Gandhi and much of the evidence indicates greater self gratification and self aggrandisement than the cause he claimed to have espoused.

Yet the root cause of much of the ills of SL remain with the so-called leaders of the country, who created a fertile soil, ploughed it then irrigated and fertilised it for weeds such as Rohana Wije, Velu Pirapa and their ilk to grow and what is more they still persist in their self serving erring ways.

Irrespective of some of the negative comments above, I commend Mr Blacker for this piece, which reflects a far greater level of maturity than previously noted in his public writings and on the CT pages.

I like to think that despite its sometimes bloody past, the current upheavals and nasty goings on, Sri Lanka remains a beautiful and serene country. The collective dream of the Lankans should be to restore it to the secular, multicultural state it once enjoyed, where people of all ethnic backgrounds are able to carve out their lives in whatever way they choose.

Unfortunately however, like in many other parts of the globe, the game of politics is played out to its allowed end; allowed because its people allow so, by standing aside and doing nothing to stem the rising tide of everything nasty we see today, all contrived of course to further strengthen the hand of power, remain so in dynastic perpetuity and ensure that there is sufficient distraction sown by its organs to keep economic issues from boiling over while protecting the rural voting base.

The current situation certainly looks forlorn, with established state power seemingly impregnable, and even as some commentators note above, the opposition completely silenced and docile. However, stranger things have happened in the past and history has shown us that eventually nemesis has an uncanny way of trouncing such mind-boggling level of hubris as has built up in the halls of power today.

It is therefore to be hoped that all citizens of Lanka will not forget the inherent values of equality across ethnic lines, fair-play and goodwill to others, and will stand up for what is not right and make the powers that be understand that they will answer for their wrong-doings some day in the future.

All the comments I have read are great . By and large these comments are written by the TAMIL , SINGHALA,AND MUSLIM DIASPORA . So, the IMPORTANT QUESTION IS WHO IS TO BELL THE CAT ? Who or what group can be bold enough to organize these PEACE MARCHES AND THE DEMAND FOR ELECTIONS . I live in the USA and I talk to my friends and relatives in Sri Lanka about THE NEED FOR CHANGE, THE NEED FOR PEACE AND UNITY AMONGST ALL ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS GROUPS AND THEY ALL TELL ME THEY ADE ALL SCARED THAT THE RAJAPKSE SAMAGAMA (ESPECIALLY GOTA) WILL WIPE THEM OFF THE PLANET !!! In fact Sri Lanka is now a harsh DICTATORSHIP- (STALIN STYLE) . So at the present time nothing much can be done and under these circumstances and sooner or later there will or may be a revolt within the GSL OR AN UPRISING OF THE PEOPLE . I know that the masses are suffering with the extremely high rate of inflation and very high Cost Of Living . The very rich in any dictatorship are not bothered to change the Government . This is also the reason why CORPORATE SRI LANKA IS SILENT . They just don’t care . This is REALITY AS IT STANDS NOW . I pray for CHANGE . And a final question :- WILL A UNITED DIASPORA DESIGN A PLAN TO BRING THE CHANGE THAT IS NEEDED??!!.AND PLANT THE AGENTS OF CHANGE IN THE NORTH, SOUTH,EAST AND WEST OF SL TO BRING ABOUT THE PEACE MARCHES AND OTHER VITAL CHANGES NEEDED FOR A UNITED , DEMOCRATIC PEARL OF THE ORIENT ( MY MOTHER LANKA )
