Pardonable Crimes & Forgivable Sins!

By Vishwamithra

“Keep me away from the wisdom which does not cry, the philosophy which does not laugh and the greatness which does not bow before children.” ~ Khalil Gibran

Pardonable Crimes and Forgivable Sins. It is indeed a provocative title. Its deeper meaning could easily be misinterpreted, while its superficial message might seem utterly meaningless. Nevertheless, I chose to use such a paradoxical phrase for this column. Modern society, however, has introduced a new sociocultural dimension to history: a veil of depository. Its existence can be traced to the initial awakenings of medieval Western Europe, passed down through imperial charades to subject peoples, and inherited by us from our former masters. Whether it is an archive of hidden truths, collective amnesia, or the institutionalized myths passed down by former powers, this veil shapes how we see ourselves.

Even more ironic and blatantly bizarre is our willingness to condone the guilty by allowing them to weaponize their conduct as if there are no consequences. The Rajapaksas did not pioneer this sociocultural paradigm, nor did they invent its underlying parasitical political ailments. Yet they mastered these systems, elevating them to a new height, while dragging the country to an unacceptable new low.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and the National People’s Power (NPP) administration find themselves navigating a formidable political and economic crisis, shaping the harsh metrics by which their governance is currently being measured. The global economy is being challenged on all fronts, and the policy responses of countries of all sizes have been closely mirrored by subsequent movements in global stock market indices. The behavior of the Sri Lankan rupee in this ‘riotous’ context has been alarming, serving as a stark early test for the NPP government.

Setting aside the rupee’s performance over the last few days, the lackadaisical stock market and its broader macroeconomic effects—or lack thereof—simply do not concern the average person on the street. None of the nuanced aspects of macroeconomics or its impact on the country’s super-rich class could distract him from the task at hand—trying to make ends meet. Just as the average citizen is deeply invested in the practical realities of society, the government should take a cue and do the same.

While President Dissanayake has commented on the rupee’s decline, the country needs more than surface-level warnings. It would be timely for a deeply analytical address explaining exactly how the Middle East crisis is affecting our economy, alongside a clear roadmap of the principles and policies planned for a meaningful recovery. Parallels can certainly be found. While Obama’s historic address on race, ‘A More Perfect Union’ was delivered on March 18, 2008, well into the primary season, the complexity of the issue and its greater influence on the totality of Obama’s campaign serve as a close parallel to AKD’s political positioning. Just as Obama became intrinsically linked to America’s racial trajectory, AKD’s inherent bond with Sri Lanka’s economic path defines his political identity.

However, their contexts differ fundamentally. Nevertheless, the challenges and ultimate objectives each leader sought to solidify are too intertwined to overlook. Obama’s speech centered on ethnic/racial identity, white-black relations, and generational scars. In contrast, the adversity AKD and the NPP must confront revolves around political and economic history. As a Marxist-aligned leader who does not come from a traditional elite background, AKD’s primary hurdle involves overcoming the stigma of the JVP’s violent insurrections in the 1970s and 1980s, and addressing deep-rooted skepticism regarding his economic recovery plans.

The strategic value of suggesting AKD make a voluminous address to clarify his roots, the history of his movement, and his vision to overcome the country’s severe economic and political adversities is a sound argument. It would mirror Obama’s strategy of taking a negative controversy and turning it into a teachable moment that unites a broader coalition of the electorate.

Beyond being a sound political strategy, the moral and patriotic message this move would send is immeasurable. There is no better way to reinstate and recover the sense of ‘trust’ that seems to be waning away with each grueling day each man and woman spends on the street. It is deeply questionable whether the United States or Israel harbors any significant empathy for a nation like Sri Lanka. Whatever activities Israel is alleged to be involved in near Arugam bay in the deep southeast are likely to become footnote stories, eclipsed by the broader, immense scale of the Middle Eastern war.

AKD’s political judgment has been proven beyond ordinary; ever since the bankruptcy debacle in 2022, he has played his cards quite proficiently. AKD expertly harnessed the widespread public anger and anti-corruption sentiment that fueled the Aragalaya-22 against the traditional political establishment. Starting with only 3.2% of the vote in the 2019 presidential election, he methodically broadened his party’s appeal, successfully shedding its radical past to build a winning coalition. His steady maneuvering culminated in a massive victory, winning the 2024 presidency and securing a sweeping parliamentary majority for his National People’s Power (NPP) coalition.

To avert economic ruin, AKD must employ the same maneuvers, tap the same resources, and mobilize the same stalwarts of the NPP—without hesitation. Any sign of delay or vacillation will be met with utter scorn and deep distrust from the same quarters- the people. Such hesitancy is an unforgivable sin.

The expectation of absolute moral perfection in political leadership is impractical. Infallibility exists only in theory, whereas human governance is inherently flawed. In the coarse and eventful journey of leadership, a true leader must always render not only sound and thoughtful judgment, but he also must be stoic and ruthless when exercising his authority. Second-guessing and regrets have no dwelling inside a leader’s head.

The current crisis confronts AKD in the most unfortunate way and in the most disproportionate dimensions. The country was slowly raising its head above the gushing waters of Cyclone Ditwah. Unlike the financial bankruptcy that was mainly caused by sheer mismanagement of the economy and wholesale corruption practiced by the Rajapaksas, AKD and the NPP-led government are today facing a potential crisis engineered and manufactured by external factors. And AKD must not hesitate to state that in the most unequivocal terms.

Rarely are leaders forced to confront such demanding circumstances; it is even rarer when honesty and candor overpower the forces of mediocrity and superficiality. Yet, when the governance of a country is challenged, the good might survive—but the great always excel, conquering the unforeseen and unforgiving.

“AKD and the NPP-led government are today facing a potential crisis engineered and manufactured by external factors. And AKD must not hesitate to state that in the most unequivocal terms.”
It is not true that AKD and NPP -led government are today facing this crisis by external factors. It is the internal factors that contributed to the crisis which is important to make it clear there is no more need to do that internal factors will never come to play in the crisis. Before accusing past governments, you should also accept that JVP and its actions also contributed for internal factors and JVP have completely changed its actions and to apologise for the contribution to the internal peace.
It is not an easy task for any government to come out of crisis within 5 years or 10 years. You have to tell the truth. You have to tell what was wrong in the past. If you are really a Sri Lankan you should tell what was wrong? Can you tell the special status to Buddhism and racism was wrong?

It’s sad to see even the weather gods are testing the ability of AKD and NPP to get our country out of the doldrums.
It’s time for the Ex-pats to extend their helping hands. Sri Lankan origin citizens living abroad should get involved with the development of their country. This needs not to be financial.
    It could be technical/educational
As the Author suggests AKD has to become STOIC and RUTHLESS to get things done—-> (I would say get some TESTOSTERONES injected)
But he has to be careful with the stooges of Rajapaksas in SL

“Sri Lankan origin citizens living abroad should get involved with the development of their country. This needs not to be financial.”
Sri Lankan origin citizens, particularly Tamils, majority of Tamils are left the island and the past governments including JVP are still not prepared to trust AKD/NPP just with words and without permanent changes or structures where none of the future governments make structural changes without the approval of Tamils. Still this government run with the same institutional structures such as unitary state, PTA and Buddha Sasana Ministry. Even majority of Tamils living in Sri Lanka are depend on the Tamils living outside Sri Lanka, not because of your government. There is not a single Tamil speaking Policeman as Inspector of Police.

“To avert economic ruin, AKD must employ the same maneuvers, tap the same resources, and mobilize the same stalwarts of the NPP—without hesitation.”
Actually, he has employed the same maneuvers, tapped the same resources, and mobilizeed the same stalwarts of the right, from Hans and Jiffry to Nandalal Weerasingha and now Eran. That is the right way to go, instead of depending on doctrinaire idiots like Lalkantha, who still thinks that the CWE can compete with Cargills, or Bimal Ratnayaka, who thinks that importing 300 high-maintenance luxury buses is better tha importing 1000 regular buses.

During the remaining period of his Presidency he should bring in the Educational REFORMS in order to make the students to become useful members of the society
Vocational training needs to be promoted. Learning other world languages should be encouraged. Ethnically mixed schools should be promoted. The schools in Colombo should give scholarships to those from rural areas. These students can stay in the boarding schools subsidised by the government. Tolerance between the different ethnic and religious groupings should start during the childhood. Teenagers need to know/understand that internal differences in a country will have a negative result.
I am pleased that the investigation into the Easter Bombings are proceeding in the right direction. Harsha de Silva, Rasamanickam, Eran Wickremaratne
Sarath Fonseka and others need to join forces with AKD

“ Pardonable Crimes & Forgivable Sins!”
What the Singhalese did to their minorities ever since the Independence aren’t the above.
Not only the Buddhist Clergy but also Christian Sinhala Clergy were willing standbys in the crimes against humanity. What Israel is doing to their Palestinians & Lebanese neighbours is deplorable. The Mighty are willing partners in this crime
SL isn’t economically strong to ban the Israeli tourists as the Country is too poor to do so!

A typical Sri Lankan writer !

He gives the title ” Pardonable crimes and forgivable sins” and then goes on to claim that his own title is provocative and has a deeper meaning that could easily be misinterpreted !

    What an ego !

But when you see them in the flesh , they are so unimpressive , almost comic !

Look at Leela, OC, 25, and crowd, all clowns .

      Madam TT (aka Deepthi),
“Look at Leela, OC, 25, and crowd, all clowns”

Before speaking as if you are above everyone else, first remember that you are part of the very people you criticize. No amount of arrogance, pretending, or distancing yourself changes where you come from. A person who constantly attacks their own people without balance or self-reflection does not look intelligent — it only reveals bitterness and confusion about their own identity.

If you truly care about Sri Lanka or Sri Lankans, speak with honesty and respect, not with superiority. Anyone can mock, complain, and judge from the sidelines. Real character is shown by understanding your own flaws before condemning an entire community. The loudest criticism means nothing when it comes from someone who has forgotten who they are.

An Atamasthanadhipathi who is my regular boozing partner once told me that he finds ladies with hair who don’t eat sodhi very attractive.

Old and ugly man OC, Your comment shows the contempt you have for Buddhism. Do you think Christianity or Islam or Hindus are better ?

It does not matter, you like to think all Buddhist priests are false. Maybe. But are you also not false, full of deceit and pretense ?

All you have is a bit of English and little trivia which in the eyes of your followers like Leela and Vedda give you high status.( like Ranil )

Do you really think you amount to something ?

Did the SL economy improve during unelected Ranil era ? How much did he borrow ? How many foreign trips did he make ? Why did the voter reject him completely the first opportunity they had ?

You say that this priest of yours likes women with hair. What kind of boys do you like ? Aloysius? Sagala ? Leela ?

    Amen Leela !

So there is no objective truth or honesty in your writing !

You just support the race, religion, or the group you were born into ? If you are in the JVP you lie in support, if you are in the LTTE you lie, if in the UNP you lie !

So you should look at the clowns around you and say that they look like Greek gods (OC, Leela, 25)

I think different. At least life has provided me a base from which i can look at that country objectively.

This Viswa Mithra writer has given a title and then he says his own title is subtle ! I cannot see any writer in Europe doing this. Their upbringing has elevated them.

The fact that you have chosen Germany ( 3 Million dollars earned !), should stop the argument. You know what is better !

After 80 years or so what has that little Sri Lanka achieved ? If you lived in Sri Lanka , buying a little Japanese car would have been the main purpose of your life !

I recently read this : ” Evil people are people of a lie . They lie to
themselves and they lie to others . If they can take even one right
step in life , it may be more difficult for them to choose evil over
good . The more we make the wrong decisions the more our
hearts harden . The more we make the right decisions the more
our hearts soften . ” The long journey of our experience with
our politics , our local politics in particular , Our Hearts Hardened
Or Softened ? Who did the most damage and what for ? They
Fantasized having the whole state machinery under their control
because of the fear that the country experienced at certain terrible
times ! But people are now quite clear about the difference between
barking and meow meow . They can not make their fantasies real .
