Patriotic Solidarity To Save Democracy

By Ameer Ali

Dr. Ameer Ali

Rauf Hakeem, Rishard Bathiudeen and Sambanthan appearing on the same podium with majority Sinhalese parliamentarians and declare that all what happened since President Sirisena’s premeditated coup is undemocratic and that the parliament should be called into session immediately. In the annals of modern political history what the President did in Sri Lanka goes against all principles of democracy and a total disregard for the constitution of the country. An independent supreme judicial body is sure to condemn his action and declare it illegal. The civilized world is no doubt outraged.

It was the Tamil and Muslim minority votes that played the crucial role in ending Mahinda Rajapaksa’s undemocratic and tyrannical regime to save Sri Lanka’s democracy in 2015. Sirisena, the man who was prepared to backstab Rajapaksa in the name of democracy in 2015 has now backstabbed democracy itself to bring back the one he betrayed, but through the back door. This president who claims to be a staunch Buddhist has now lost his moral right to remain in that esteemed office. What Hakeem, Bathiudeen, Sambanthan and the Sinhalese majority have done in this context will be remembered by future generations as an event that saved democracy and freedom in Sri Lanka.

This is not to argue in support of Ranil Wickremesinghe and his incompetent government. His inaction and procrastination to deliver on promises he made to the voters mark him the most unproductive prime minister the country ever produced since independence. He allowed corruption to rule, the guilty to escape, rule of law to debilitate, and budget deficits to balloon and drive down the value of local currency, while cost of living shot through the roof to drown his voters in poverty and debt. No wonder the people punished his administration severely at the recent local council elections. However, a prime minister elected by the majority should also be thrown out by the majority and not by a capricious president who treats his office like a village headman trampling over lives of his fellow villagers.

Likewise, this is also not to argue against the right of Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest for prime ministership or presidency. What is being argued is that he should seek his position and enter the parliament through the front door. If the majority supports him who can deny his victory?

In many of my writings on Muslim politics in Sri Lanka I have been constantly critical of Muslim politicians for their opportunistic behaviour, status consciousness and lack of patriotism. On this occasion however, the action of Hakeem and Bathiudeen throwing their weight behind Sambanthan and his TNA to show solidarity with the Sinhalese majority is a commendable act. To save democracy and freedom of the people is an act of patriotism and they should stand steadfast in their decision.

No sooner the backdoor cabinet assumed power it has unleashed a series of populist measures in the name of reducing the cost of living. Did any of them think of the impact those measures going to have on the national budget? There is no word about how budget revenue is going to be raised to cover the escalating deficit. Is more borrowing and higher level of national debt the solution?

The president also seems to think that by dismissing an elected prime minister and installing in his place his former adversary that he has protected his presidency for a second term. He is going to have a nightmare. True, there is no permanent friend and foe in politics. But the president’s renewed friendship with Rajapaksa does not guarantee a second term for Sirisena, because there is another from the Rajapakse clan waiting in the wing with presidential aspirations.

Finally, India’s hand in this coup is becoming clear by the day. How else can one explain Subramanyaswamy advising Sambanthan to join hands with Rajapaksa in the interest of the Tamil community? How will China react to this drama is another story for another time.

Sri Lanka has a proud history of engineering peaceful political changes and respect for democracy and justice. That comes from its pluralist culture. Let that glorious past not be ruined by a gamarala president.

As long as we have narrow minded uncultured fools like this person this country has no chance of progressing. With such a populace how can we expect the elected officials to be any different? What does the writers religion have to do with the article?

When Shenal wakes up in the morning, he admires the two horns on his head in the mirror. Then he hits his head with a hammer to make a loud clanging sound so that his wife can bring the grass for breakfast.

      Shenal,

RE: Patriotic Solidarity To Save Democracy

Does not matter, who the messenger is Would you accept a letter informing you that you have not paid your taxes, if the letter carrier is a Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Atheist, Buddhist, Communist, Capitalist, Anarchist-etc?

The issue here is Democracy, the Constitutions, and Dictatorship, and what the Patriotic citizens should choose Unfortunately, in Sri Lanka, the mean IQ is 79, and that makes it a challenge

Muslims are the fastest growing religious group in the world; that’s what the world is coming to. That is progress.

Ameer Ali: You are lieing by saying that India is connected to this. IT is Sri lankan politicians who finished all the avenues of holding onto power and now they use different antiques such as come one is coming to kill the chicken little. IF there were to be arab spring west knows how to reach the agitaters in advance.

I am sure Subramanian Swamy had played some role in the current political crisis in SL.
He is a buddy for the Rajapaksa clan. I do hope the Parliament will open ASAP and Mahinda defeated at the earliest.

Parliament is supreme in a Republic. In a Monarchy, the Monarch is Supreme.
In a dictatorship, the dictator is Supreme.

Sirisena forgot that, Sri Lanka is the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, or knew it and ignored, prompted by Mahinda Rajapaksa and cronies.Just see what Dayan Jayatillake said .

No law abiding Srilankan will support the move of the Gamarala who was under the impression that the International COMMUNITY is behind him just because he met with number of visits he made to other countries. Gamarala must first abide by the will of the people and the Parliament, without resorting to low pedigree stuff

      r.
Patholaya obviously enjoys the Presidency and wants to continue enjoying the perks of the job; just as RW wants to continue being PM forever.MR the savior prefers to be “king” forever.
These are all Hobson’s choices. The answer is to retire or disqualify all three of them. It’s after all the “people’s job” to choose.

    Thank you Mr Ali.
-Shenal Bro I am shocked by your comment.
-Removal of race/religious/language parties is a must in our Nation to have any democratic discussions/future. Only this can avoid UNDEMOCRATIC ghettoes in Sri Lanka as PC’s will compound the same….people will never have a chance to break out of the current undemocratic representation in these ghuttoes most of the opposition were murdered/eliminated for the current success and the violence again is being normalised by whoever once more??. Only other solution is dictatorship/one party rule. Democracy and Divisional politics can not mix.
    – Tamil Nadu gutter politics was imported into SL via the North and we are done for good just as the innocent Tamil Nadu public for a long time historically (so much for the devolved power structure we have inherited too).
    – Mrs Clinton visit to meet Amma minutes of meeting could be published by Tamil Nadu based Hindu could be more appropriate than the news paper questioning the SL Head of State discussions in their cabinet meetings recently is very shocking audacious position and even more shocking is the RW NYDT interview answers???We need a serious National discussion on this subject??
    – This patriotic act brings the victors of the 1977 elections together again in the same side (if you did this you are a turncoat/traitor) after the 1977 and 1983 race riots and last 40 years of war that robbed us of all our children and the Nationhood is indeed patriotically saving us today for a better tomorrow am pleased.
    – Could we say Chilcot Inquiry discussions were abruptly brought to a halt when we had to deal with the Brexit outcome and may be the recent Constitutional coup could well be an answer to many of our problems too – stop war crime investigations, dissolve PC’s and the dysfunctional constituional assembly? so the country can focus on her normal life once again?? as there is no other problems really that we can see that is holding the country back except the disappeared, those behind bars/reasons not open to public and some land issues up north?
-We need a clean start at some point??

When Sri Lankan politicians break wind, Indian politicians develop a belly ache. Chase them out. They have no role to play in SL.

“They have no role to play in SL”

      Really.
If they p**s from Kanyakumari we get huge tsunami.
If they f**t from Kudankulam there won’t be anything left in this island, including Mahawansa history.
If Hindians drop Chapati flour the entire Sri Lankan security apparatuses disappear from the face of Earth.

I will not be so sure.
It was MS against India and RW for India very recently in the Cabinet.
India, knowing MR’s potential to return, wanted to patch up with him. S. Swamy played his part.
The South Block knows which sided of the slice is buttered.

China is too cool a customer to get sucked into this matter.
They were silent on Myanmar regime change.
They are silent on Male regime change.
I fear that you will only be making wild guesses.

Dear SJ, all the security council permanent nations are like drug Barrons running a rehab center. They are all masters at proxy wars and now the new trend is the ‘wanna be’ to join the same grouping are working with the same and applying the same practices they themselves detested then as evil deeds for their OWN nations survival. Little did we know that our ex non aligned partners/neighbours with their own humble history to freedom will let Mother Lanka down too at a critical juncture in her journey to economical freedom too? We are all exposed without the non align (NA) movement just like so many other NA nations. Yugoslavia/Libya/Iraq……and many more NA Nations do not exist anymore having been systematically taken out from existence and divided into waring factions. Even worse the local Morans will guide our children to connive with the same and fight various non existing national causes until we are no more is a treachery of unimaginable proportion. The unsuspecting SL public were robbed of all their dreams by the same we elected since 1948……and then the “saviours were made to be the evils in 2009” so we can now continue the same old slow death?? All by design and a through very deceptive project execution methadology indeed.

      Continued
The Earlier opportunity to escape all these in ‘one piece’ with a bit of dignity left after the 1977 election squanders was the Development Council Elections in 1981 were all squandered by the same as those who were to make that vision possible are no more and ‘killed in action’ too. The robbers live on for another day and for another deal lost in their own deeds taking us all (whatever left) down with them too but please note only with memorials for themselfs only as others whom they killed were all less humans according to the UN charter perhaps????
so lessons learned — when you have a fire next time please do not call the international fir brigade Inc. as they will arrive with a tanker full of fuel….best have our own HOME GROWN fool proof solutions.

      Thank you

Constitutional experts in parliament we do not need…….the democracy need to be saved as follows

Please please remove all lawyers out of the Parliament as these guys have sustainably created enough problems for a life long survival for themselves at our expenses.

Nation building exercise from post colonial scenarios have presented such an opportunity for those who could not make a living elsewhere or they did both private and public practice at the parliaments too on a part time basis?. This mafia set up need to go.

Can someone write an article on the lawyers who were our politicians since Independence and what they did in their scope as elected politicians + outside of working hours too please. Time to have an open discussion on many things we were prevented from knowing for a long time. We do not need deal makers/people good with words/businessmen/diplomats/cunning speakers……….we need something entirely a defferent breed of people…………discuss matters at a different levels away from all this race/religion/language……….we need a selection process for each party memebers who will stand in the elections in the future by a government body telecasted to the nation.

We need Technocrats as Members of the Parliament who knows some basic economics/political science/social work/administrative skills/engineers (most of the Communist party decision makers & planners in China are all Engineers I understand)….have regular surgeries/regular town hall meetings/serve all the people irrespective of their party politics/lead a simple life/understand the job scope and dedicated to “One Lanka” project / some track record in public service..

We had every-combination possible amonst all parties and liberation groups since Independence from North to South since Independence.

The one and only combination that was needed was to respond to our previous Presidents call for peace talks before the final phase of the war…………..this is bad enough one may think…….worse to come…….

Once the war came to the conclusion it had if anyone really cared about anything in the Country would have joined hands with then the Predident MR and used the momentum to change the Country for good? Instead we have gone back to the same old combinations tells you what please???????? do we ever learn as a Nation.

Who paid the price the general public and all the children (armed forces and the armed groups) who lost their life thinking the elders had more sense to guide them at some point died betrayed??? We are a Nation of cowards proven when TNA/UNP and a Muslim parties join hands for something and am sure many more groupies to come in the near future too. No end in sight.

One may think they will all go closed door together and come up with a future plan for Mother Lanka?? Is it F****** too much to ask?
