People’s Sovereignty Roadblocked

By Sarath de Alwis

Sarath de Alwis

The slave begins by demanding justice and ends by wanting to wear a crown. He must dominate in his turn.” ~ Albert Camus’s Rebel

Barricading the roads leading to parliament is a desperate act of a regime that has lost its capacity for reason.

A barricade has two sides. Truth has only one side.

Every social rebellion is driven by an overarching unity of the people. Semi-permanent barricades have been put up on all approaches to parliament. A regime that survives purely on its capacity for brute force to contain public discontent has grudgingly acknowledged that it is fast running out of options.

Yesterday I watched a senior police officer exuding intimidatory machismo ordering a hapless group of cops to bundle a dozen protestors into a bus on parliamentary grounds. Later in the day the protestors were released on bail.

A youth forcibly put on the police bus screamed ‘tomorrow your family too will need food’.

It is too much to expect the slow witted but senior policeman to have read ‘Les miserable’. The youth in the bus was making a cry that is long known to civilized society voiced in Victor Hugo’s immortal words.

“When the beating of your heart echoes the beating the beating of the drums, there is a life about to start when tomorrow comes!”

In 1956 the people of this land elected a parliament that truly reflected the yearnings of the ordinary people. I was fourteen years old. It was called the age of the common man. Its architect was S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike whose giant statue was recently ‘blindfolded’ by protestors at ‘Gotagogama’ with a piece of black cloth. For good measure the protestors left a poster at its base urging the man to wake up.

There is indeed some poetry in that irreverent hark back to our post-independence history. 1956 unleashed the centrifugal force that propelled many penniless protectors of public interest into politics.

Bandaranaike was the post-independence leader who foresaw the social and cultural forces that demanded a new order. He founded the Sri Lanka Freedom Party that gave social mobility to the mono lingual Sinhala intelligentsia. The SLFP led broader coalition – Mahajana Eksath Peremuna dislodged the UNP. Today the SLFP and the MEP are both personal fiefdoms of lesser minds driven by far fierce avarice.

On becoming Prime Minister S.W.R.D said ‘I look upon our government as in some way laying the foundation in preparing the way for a more progressive line of thinking and action in this country’. He facilitated social change. But he had no idea of the shape and scope of the change he brought about.

The ’Gotagogama’ protestors want poor Bandaranaike to wake up to the sad truth of what his legacy has turned in to.

The current parliament has a sizeable number of descendants of those who entered parliament in 1956. Quite apart from the social transformation, 1956 was the watershed happening that made politics a profitable occupation that could be safely passed on from one generation to the other.

A good case in point is that of the Son of the Boralugoda lion who has got his lion cub into parliament through the national list.

The grandson of the Kandy Street poet who entered parliament in 1956 has earned cabinet rank in the recent reshuffle.

The protestors want good old S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike to wake up to the cruel irony of the off spring of his faithful follower who crossed the aisle with him feeding ‘Rottweilers’ and ‘Angora cats’ while ordinary mothers line up for milk powder at half empty shops.

The truth is that the people want both Mahinda and Gotabaya to go. The ordinary people have passed the endurance levels of exasperation.

The semi-permanent barricades on the approaches to parliament is a recognition of that very inconvenient truth.

The politicians must learn from the protestors. They don’t have an overpowering leader. They are moved by conviction. Parliament is on a different wavelength. They are busy mapping out a process to construct a new leadership. The brothers are in no hurry. They have been in this business and know how it works.

Seeking a solution to the economic crisis is the least of their concerns. Surviving the crisis while saving their boodle is the existential imperative they just cannot afford to ignore.

In the kind of politics they know, leadership is the ultimate trophy. People can be hungry for food. Politics is different. The hunger for power is what drives it.

You cannot lead without speaking. That is why all contenders are speaking nonstop in the talk shop where rhetoric has thrived at the expense of practical common sense.

Parliament will need barricades until such time it decides that Politics is the process of solving public problems.

We don’t need a great leader. We need good leaders who are honest about the predicament we are in and are ready to explore transparent solutions.

The proceedings in parliament clearly indicate that there is no one who can claim to have mastery of the situation.

The Minister of Finance and Justice is a clever man. He made a very honest analysis of the crisis. That said we must caution him. Honesty is a not a byproduct of a crisis.

Either you have it or you don’t. He was once the ‘mouthpiece’ in Court. Now, in parliament, he describes himself as the ‘Nightwatchman’. Give the devil his due, So far, he has acquitted himself with great a sangfroid and unmistakable elan.

His last peroration in parliament was a balancing act. It failed to clearly define the magnitude of the crisis. Stability is something that is urgently needed. Achieving the semblance of political stability requires not numbers in parliament but civic trust in the country. The brothers he served so diligently are not trusted by the public.

The Nightwatchman must realize that he cannot be the nightwatchman and ‘mouthpiece’ in parallel.

Other than perpetuating the power grip of the Rajapaksa family, the ‘Pohottuwa’ party has no cohesive ideology.

The ‘Nightwatchman’ Ali Sabry on the other hand is an accident – the product of a combination of circumstances which has made him pivotal in the process of locating sanity amidst madness.

A barricaded parliament is not the anvil on which a national consensus is forged.

Is it not paradoxical that those who want him to wake up blindfold the face of his statue?

      Where are you?
Please do not contemplate the idea of committing suicide.
You long lost cousin has already despatched food, medicine, best wishes to you.
      You should be alright.
Hope you won’t allow Basil to sell those goodies on the black market.

Let me ask you a question.
If the clan escapes to a far away country will you join them?
What will happen to other b***s carriers?
Will they also join the clan?

Tell us how will the monks record Rajapaksa family history in their continuing Wamsa records?

    Dear Mr S De A.
Excellent piece well compiled. But ……
….He made a very honest analysis of the crisis…..
I would not say that. He did the best with a bad brief. Yes he did a balancing act of appearing honest but did not directly criticise those who did the damage. He only said – yes we made mistakes – distributing the blame. He did not honestly own up to the fact that he was the architect of the 20A which he presented to Parliament, and which caused the debacle, by giving power to an unsuitable man.
    The Prez recently said :
    https://lankanewsweb.net/archives/10506/i-was-dragged-into-trouble-because-of-corrupt-ministers-president/
Either DR is an imbecile or he is complicit, and letting the side down now to save his skin – and what did Sabry do for two years with this infamous client.
And Sabry bowed his head in acquiescence when HE pardoned Duminda, Gnanassara and Ratnayake (11 youth) when he was Minister of Justice.

And of course the tax cuts which necessitated printing money to cover the govt. revenue shortfall, possibly he also benefitted being in the high income bracket. It was estimated that 1.1 million tax files were involved.
The list is long of “other mistakes.”

OC and My View, Night watchman being lawyer is admitting to guilt, of his client / accused, in piecemeal to public court. He admitted to idiotic policies of Cabraaaal and giving tax free holidays to rich. He did not mention yet about organic BS. Of course he will never admit the corruption by Mafia family. He also cannot admit the wrongs of Gotha which he defended as his private lawyer.

The two countries which defaulted in our region are Indonesia and Myanmar. The last was 50 years ago. Now thanks to two decades of Rajapaksa economy, Silly Lanka has managed to create a record. In 1997 during Asian financial crisis, Indonesia , the most populous Muslim country was forced into debt restructuring but recovered by 1999 and by 2012 replaced India as second fastest growing G 20 nation, amid recession in 2012 and 2020, Indonesia today is 7th largest in terms of GDP (PPP) which is almost double than India. It’s predicted to be the fourth largest economy in the world by 2045. Whereas Myanmar, just like our Silly Lanka, (for the same reasons) is one of the poorest country.

        Dear SJ.
You are very correct there. But “Blame is for sharing” is reasonable to some extent and may be grudgingly excused but downright avoiding and putting it on others is shameful.
Gota says “not me” – it is the corrupt Ministers. And he took 2.5 years to realise it, like he took 2.5 years to realise his stupid advisors – Rathana Padadadeniya, Cabraal, Lakshman. Artigala, PBJ and Basils boast everything is ok when bottom was falling off.

Sarath de Alwis: you are writing as SWRD Banda is a great PM and statesman. He is the one who brought the split between Tamils and Sinhalese. He is the one started riots in 1956. He is the one who made the great Sinhalese people to hate the Tamils. He is one started this country in a destruction path. All my friends are Sinhalese and we enjoyed each others company. Our Sinhalese friends always hangout at our houses and we hangout at their houses. One Admiral of the SL Navy said to me the Tamils were right. The Tamils called us Sinhalaya Modaya. This Sinhala gentleman will give his life for me and I will do the same for him. I saw my parents always had Sinhala friends. We never hated the Sinhalese people and Sinhalese people never hated us. But your hero SWRD is an nasty opportunist, power hungry, and educated idiot. He put this country in the wrong path. Hope there will be a very young Sinhala student will emerge as a statesman, Leader of all people, Leader of truth, Leader of Honesty, Hunter of all corrupts people, Leader of spread the harmony all SL not just one community. I hope this leader will put the Buddhist monks who thugs in Prision and take the kick them out of the religion. Great Buddha is rolling in his grave because of the SL monks behavior. Where is the non violent monks to stop these bad ones.

      Kalay,
“He is the one who brought the split between Tamils and Sinhalese.”
      —-
Mr. SWRD Bandaranayake is not the one who brought the split between Demalu and Sinhalayao. It was GG Ponnambalam and SJV Chelvanayakam.
GG Ponnambalam started the anti-Sinhala Buddhist campaign in 1939 by delivering a racially charged speech at Nawalapitiya ridiculing Mahawansha and denigrating the Sinhala-Buddhist culture, its history and the people.
SJV Chelvanayakam started the separatist campaign officially in 1949 by forming Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (toned down as Federal Party in English but the real meaning was Tamil State Party) which had as its hidden agenda the establishment of a separate state.
Both these racist politicians told Demalu in Yapanaya not to learn Sinhala, the language spoken by indigenous Sinhalayo who accommodated Demalu from Hindusthan in their country.

Well said. Unfortunately theough Banda was “educated” he was not a visionary or a leader material. He was an oppertunist, he started the majaritan ‘democratc’ politics in its true form. This ultimately led JR (who is the final distructive leader) to say “if Tamils suffer Sinhalese will be happy, so let them suffer”. Now we all are suffering. We have a set of jokers and idiots in the parliment. The fellow Siyambalapitiya resigned today. Who cares about a deputy speaker if fact who cares about the parliment.

We need a system change. Blindfolding Banda is of no use, he was any way blind

You need to research more on those responsible for communal hatred.
Go back in history to find that Sir P Ramanathan did his part to hurt the Muslims.
The bulk of the UNP were successors to the anti-Muslim tradition beginning in 1915.
The anti-Tamil streak in DS Senanayake was cunning. JRJ was a little too obvious.
      Who first proposed Sinhala Only?
Who started a march to Kandy to protest the B-C pact?
Who really started the riots of 1956?
      *
      You happily say:
“One Admiral of the SL Navy said to me the Tamils were right. The Tamils called us Sinhalaya Modaya.”

Night watchman says ” there is no easy way out, and recovery will take any where from 2 to 3 years. The timing will be stage managed closer to election as in Easter and Covid management, to promise “prosperity and splendor 2.0”. This is Sham Lanka of 75 years InDependence. But he admitted to grave blunders of Sir Fail. Giving tax free holidays for his own financiers, filthy rich and rogue businessmen. I am sure Sabry is included in the list. Untimely Organic experimentation and Cabraaaaal burning down the treasury, $$ reserves trying artificially to prop up LKR. In any other country just one is good enough to take responsibility and go home. Not in Silly Lanka. Mr. Rear end guard thinks Lanka is not bankrupt but defaulting on 51 Billion for fun. He should be considered for next CB gov post.

There is an easy way out. Its simple I GR and MR and their family leave the parliment (the rest can be sent out in the next election) and bring the stolen money back it will be more than enough. Our expartiates have promised they will remit money if these rouges leave, that will bring us more than 500 mil USD permonth, tourism will improve, invester confidence will improve (especially BR and NR are not there) , Tie the hands of currupt politicians in all the parties. its simple Ali, you maynot be able to do it. But ther are experts who can fix it. Ali was the minister of Injustice now he also has become the Min.of Economic mismanagement

Those young men near the parliament are really fearful for their future. They are terrified for their children’s future. They were depending on the Rajapaksas to build up the country from the hard work each of them had done, and the hard work of their parents mostly from the labour camps of the Middle East.

But the Rajapakas tried to follow the UNP art of wheeling and dealing in the global monetary market. UNP did it with finesse (all their offshore accounts off the hard work of our suffering masses), keeping it simple for only a select elite to sit holding snootiness over the common people….but they had a cut-off point, and knew how to temper it to suit their self-importance. It was merely for Colombo-city show and tell, with some Western society show-and-tell to embellish on the Colombo show-and-tell.

    • 7
      0

Rajapaksas were no match. Their sheer greed, poor intellect, and quest for Kingly Power really roused up their dumb passions making them pawn and game for those very global powers to screw them like rats. The global elite who use the global banking system with their financial excesses, are laughing their heads off at our Island trying to rub shoulders with them. Money has now vanished into the normal functionings of global banking where the risk is part and parcel of transactional routines- rich countries with excess capital are able to take those risks.

R’s are now hanging onto power, trying desperately to get the monies back (after possibly keeping several billions for themselves). Any monies gotten back are given to India, Japan, Indonesia, even IMF via China, for them to grant it back to us. Not enough of course, maybe a billion for so. Yet, there’s $$50-billion missing…the amount our poor sufferings Lankans will have to slog away to pay back for many generations to come.

“…Semi-permanent barricades have been put up on all approaches to parliament.”

There is an element of truth in what Prabhakaran said ‘Sinhalayo have a short memory’.
Sarath de Alwis has forgotten how ‘Yahapalana’ Government used barricades, water cannons, tear gas, baton charges to disperse protestors. They even attacked disabled ‘Ranaviruwo’ who protested in front of the Fort Railway Station regarding compensation and chased them away.

Not a single human being was arbitrarily killed by good governance govt until Gota /Mara massacred nearly 300 injuring 1000 or so on easter sunday of 2019. Now peoples doubts becoming clear that nobody else but mlechcha brothers let happening.
      .
Police/ election/ and other commissions implemented by then govt gave everyone a feeling to experience palpable changes/ people called it “democracy is restored as no time in the past”/ however main stream media was mainly controlled by stolen loot of MR/BR/and others.

back similar to cut their own neck by their own. Consequence was the message did nt go to the grassroot level of the people.
so. RW was made scapegoated as their bond scammer for CB. JVPres deliberately capitalized the situation by making UNPers (eternal rivals of them) as the real architects of the bond scam even if they knew it was a first hand system error/ and they were well aware of the fact MR and Cabral were the real thieves of so called Bank robbery going as back as 2008/ in a country where little ones and innocent women would have been abused for their political games/ how can truths be sowed ? A country filled with total ignorants / how can our youth ever make hopes for a better future?🐃🤔😎🤔🐃😎🤔🐃😎

MR, GR, BR, NR and all other Rs were not officially in power, but entire media networks were handled by them, and the stolen loot by them. All PVT TV channels are pumped by millions of funds, which were then taken away by MR et al.
          .
Anyone with some sanity, would think twice atleast today, that Good Governance worked to its best but “today s rulers”; then “joint opposition led by BPs and WPs” never allowed it to move forward and cornered honourable RW and othehr goodies to the wall.

If we are not reborn, we still remember how former GOVT got their amendment passed alone during the first 100 days.

Started as a protest against gas and fuel shortages and power cuts. Slowly the slogan changed to ‘Gota Go Home’ in Galle Face to ‘Maina Go Home’ near Temple Trees. Very likely a new slogan ‘Parlimentuwa Go Home’ might appear at Diyawannawa by ‘Anthare’. If they become successful, this country will be without a Government (Arajika) and end up like Libya. That could be the aim of the guys who are holding the strings of the puppets in Galle Face, near Temple Trees and Diyawannawa.

Even without their (protestors) efforts the GR/MR combine has already brought us up to this – “Arajjika and like Libya” status. The protesters are protesting against that. Hope you realise that. GR/MR cannot show their faces and operating from inside their bunkers.

Arajika is without a government. Is there a govt now with Prez & PM in bunkers heavily guarded against their own citizens, scared to come face to face. People want GR and MR to give up. Today much speculation whether MR will resign with his cabinet. Scared of its own citizens GR declared an Emergency.
Govt declared bankruptcy by saying all Bonds Loans to debtors have been suspended indefinitely.

          “What happened in Libya?”
          Why, what happened in Libya??
You mean to ALL POWERFUL and exalted, Muammar Muhammad Abu Minyar al-Gaddafi??!!
I only remember seeing a photo in internet media of him CRAWLING OUT OF HIS BUNKER, during the revolution, which happened to be A CULVERT ON A MAIN ROAD IN LIBYA???
Are you at all hovering on the periphery of suggesting, that is portend to happen in Sri Lanka??
It not an envision-able sight to be in a site along Galle Road or Duplication Road along the Beira??!
Nor Possibility at Janathipathi Mawatha or the tunnel leading to the Colombo Port???

      EE,
“If they become successful, this country will be without a Government (Arajika) and end up like Libya.”
      WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE?? NONE!!
The GOTA the EP is in deep “slumber at the Helm” and no contribution, for the money and facilities being paid to him as emoluments and facilities! That’s a TON!!
We could easily save that and also save by not taking another ‘SILLY’ ORGANIC FERTILISER like project and pay Chinese’ 6.9 million? That money could have been used to get Milk Powder for the children instead of them starving!!
PM, the “Appachche”, AKA old Myna also has abandoned the children!! is nothing different, when all the household silver was Robbed, Looted and Sold for mere ‘song’, whilst he and Cabal was in control – which to say the least was “Utter no Control”!!! But Mayhem!!
      Don’t you agree???
Not much difference, if these types are eliminated or not!!?? WE could save for importing food!!
When you have patriots like EP and PM no country needs any more Traitors!!!
These guys are self-serving to benefit themselves!! Not “Servants of the Masses??!!
      Boru Sobaney!!
May have to forego, ‘Pay Master’, very soon??
You may have to go to Uganda!!

“A regime that survives purely on its capacity for brute force to contain public discontent has grudgingly acknowledged that it is fast running out of options.”

Does this really matter to the majority of parliamentarians in office today? They will stay in power by hook or crook to finish the term. Most of them including Mihinda & Gota knows their chances of getting re-elected are slim. So they as well as the others including the so called “Independent” or “Inter-dependent will team-up and now watch the scams on overdrive.

“Yesterday I watched a senior police officer exuding intimidatory machismo ordering a hapless group of cops to bundle a dozen protestors into a bus on parliamentary grounds. Later in the day the protestors were released on bail.”
When a man cannot progress in his profession with his education, talent and ability he tends to lick the boots of people in power.

    On a different note:
The election of the deputy speaker, speaks volumes of the state of the mind of protesters and politicians.

This Statue of Banda is in itself is a distortion of facts. Banda was a diminutive figure with exceptional Oratorical skills. and knowledge. He used his prowess to come to power at any cost and peddled Sinhala Buddhism allowing Buddhist Priests to take centre stage and was allegedly killed by a Buddhist Monk it self. The Chinese that the Bandaranayakes were flirting with, put this Statue in order for the Posterity to believe Banda was a colossus which was never the case. Today we are paying back what was sown by Banda the ‘Disunity’ to a society that was in Harmony.. .

Banda was a smart man that knew Sinhalese mass was stupid. Although he could not even speak proper Sinhalese he knew if he changed his attire and promised the idiots that Sinhala will be the national language he will be voted. Today those idiots grandchildren realizing what a stupid language Sinhala is are educating them selves in English.

        Bert,

“Banda was a smart man that knew Sinhalese mass was stupid.”

Then Tamils must be even more so, because Sinhalese have been defeating them militarily for 2K odd years. With every defeat, they come back for another beating. They should have just left the island, similar to the Burghers. The Burghers also had certain privileges, given by the British, which they did not try to hold onto after Independence. There is a very small segment of Tamils who exhibit exceptional intelligence, and those are the Indian Brahmins. However, these people did not waste their time with Sri Lankan Tamils and they were mostly chased out of Tamil Nadu because they are not “pure” Dravidians. Today they are in charge of companies like Google and Microsoft. Periyar, one of the heroes of Prabhakaran said, ““If you see a snake and a Brahmin, kill the Brahmin first.” This is the “pure” Dravidian intellect.

Doesn’t this show their determination and belief in principle than the consequence, I don’t think you will understand because Sinhalese is a race that has no principle. You saw the deputy speaker election.
“They should have just left the island”
That’s being a coward like your President, hiding in a bunker for 30 days and then calling emergency without looking for a solution to the problem.

“You have tried to get rid of Tamils for 74 years you could not and you will never will.”

There is no need to “get rid” of Tamils in the North and East as long as they live under military occupation. Death is instantaneous while living under a military occupation is psychologically traumatizing. Incorrect. Most Tamil Brahmins support the Sri Lankan Tamils and their cause. A lot of them may not have liked the LTTE but support the just rights of the Sri Lankan or Eelam Tamils. They are sophisticated and intelligent enough to differentiate between both and the reason for the birth of the LTTE. This also includes the late chief of Tamil Nadu minister Jayalalitha. They are fully aware that Sri Lankan Tamils are not influenced by the anti-Brahmin ideology of Periyar and respect Brahmins and Carnatic music. They are also aware that most Hindu temples in the west are built and run by Sri Lankan Tamils and they always appoint Brahmin priests from either Tamil Nadu or Sri Lanka. They respect the Hindu religious tradition and will never appoint a non-Brahmin as a priest. It was not only the Tamil Brahmins but even many other upper castes who were also discriminated against. Including the Saiva Pillai, Mudaliar, and Chettiars. Do not judge the entire Tamil Brahmin community with the likes of Subramaia Sway and his ilk.

The Indian DMK, ADMK, all Dravidian parties are thrives on money and robbers. They looted Tamil Nadu govt. Rajapashas must have learned from them. These Dravidians made the Brahmins as their boogey man. The Brahmins are great people. Periar is not Periar. He is small minded racist. Brahmins contributed for India’s advancement. Dravidians held India back. These idiots told the Tamils not to learn Hindi. SL Tamil politicians told Tamil people not to learn Sinhalese. We have enough idiots and robbers to go around I guess.

            • 3
              1

Again a lot of incorrect assumptions. Yes, again many leaders of the Dravidian parties looted and amassed huge wealth however there is a vast difference between them and the Rajapakses. They also uplifted the masses of Tamil Nadu, especially the poor and low castes. It was during their era that Tamil Nadu became an economic powerhouse and the standard of living vastly improved for the ordinary people of Tamil Nadu. This is the reason they keep on voting for them, despite all the corruption and bribery charges, leveled against many of their leaders and everyone benefited during their rule. Yes they made the Tamil Brahmins as their bogey man and this was not warranted but on the other hand, the Tamil Brahmins at that time were having a stranglehold on Tamil Nadu and were not allowing other Tamils to come up. It was not as bad as the neighbouring state of Kerala.

              • 1
                1

It is thanks to the Dravidian parties this stranglehold was lifted but they did not have to throw the baby with the water. Like most Sri Lankan Tamils the Tamil Brahmins are indeed very intelligent hardworking people and they have contributed a lot to the Tamil language, and culture and take pride in preserving this. Remember Periyar was not a Tamil but a Kannada and many of these so-called Dravidian leaders had a Telugu origin. Just like many Sinhalese leaders who were anti-Tamil have a South Indian Tamil origin. Brahmins did contribute a lot to India’s advancement but so did the Dravidians. Do not make sweeping and silly statements. 75% of India’s rich culture is of Dravidian origin. Both Indo Aryans and Dravidians have contributed a lot to India, its languages, and culture and modern India is largely a synthesis of these two people. Most of us a partly Indo Aryan and partly Dravidian, the mixture varies with each region and caste. It is because of these Dravidian parties, who uplifted the Tamil masses, that, unlike neighbouring Kerala, conversion to Christianity and Islam, was minimal in Tamil Nadu, whereas in Kerala now 30% of the population is Muslim and 20% Christian.

                • 3
                  1

People accuse the Dravidian parties of being anti-Hindu, in reality, it was because of them Hinduism was saved in Tamil Nadu, as their actions made society more equitable. They are more secular and they made all Tamils other than the Brahmins, of course, irrespective of caste or religion feel that they belong and are one people. Now even this anti-Brahmin sentiment has largely disappeared, as the reason for this has gone. The Dravidian parties were neve against Hindi and do not mind individuals learning Hindi but were against the forceful imposition of Hindi by the central government on non-Hindi speaking states. Tamil Nadu has thrived without Hindi, however, lots of Tamils do learn Hindi but this is not necessary as 98% of the Tamils in India live in Tamil Nadu or in neighbouring South Indian states . where again Hindi is not required. Why burden them with a language that they do not require to learn or is hardly useful to them in life. However many Tamils still learn Hindi. It is not the same for the Hindi belt which is the most backward part of India.

                  • 2
                    1

Many non-Hindi-speaking states have now learned from Tamil Nadu and are now fighting against the forceful imposition of Hindi in their areas, as this has affected their languages. Sri Lanka is different, unlike India which has many languages, it only has two languages, and learning Sinhalese and Tamil should be made compulsory for all, and proficiency in both languages must be made compulsory. Especially for all public servants, police, armed forces, and even politicians. There is no excuse.

There is no “alleged” about it. Bandaranaike was shot by a Buddhist monk, Talduwe Somarama. Some Buddhists tend to disbelieve this. This is the reason that the Buddhist clergy have arrogated so much power to themselves even today.
The Chinese had nothing to do with the statue. It was designed and donated by the Soviet Union. It is in the then popular Socialist Heroic model. I wouldn’t be surprised if it is Bandaranaike’s head on Lenin’s body.

Banarakanicke was no statesman but an opportunistic, deliberately created hatred towards the Thamizh, for his own personal benefit. He ultimately paid for his folly by a Buddhist Monk assassinating him. Strange both he and his late wife were both anti-Thamizh but their ancestors originated from Thamizh Nadu. So did the ancestor of another anti-Thamizh JR Jayawardena as well as many so-called Chingkalla leaders both low and high born, now beating the anti-Thamizh drum. Now that horrible es army former minister clown, who is close to Gothic is desperately trying to invoke racism against the Thamizh people again. Talking about Thamizh Eezhan supporters infiltrating Galle Face protests and disrespecting Buddhism and Buddhist monks. When Thamizh is hardly protesting as most of us correctly feel this has nothing to with us when we never even voted for this racist war criminal or his government that is full of racists and war criminals, who won on a racist platform.

Look at this Buddhist monk and Chingkalla police and armed forces still intimidating Thamizh in the northeast and trying to steal their lands and ancient Hindu temples, when Thamizh Nadu is feeding these ungrateful racists >proves how hollow the Chingkallams are/ Praising Bandaranicke indeed. Typical Chingkalla mindset. The Rajapakses thanking Thamizh Nadu whilst extremist Buddhist monks and the Chingkalla armed forces and police are still behaving in a racist manner towards the Thamizh in the northeast and a former minister close to Gothic, making racist threats against the Thamizh.

Pandi Kutti aka Siva Sankaran aka Rohan,

Vellalar are just low caste agricultural laborers (formerly from Kerala) brought by the Dutch to work on plantations. They got some privileges from the British and created a fake caste system. They tried to use low caste Prabhakaran for a fake freedom struggle, even though Prabhkaran killed many of their own members like Amirthalingam and Duriappah. Why TN Brahmins like Jayalalitha never supported your fake freedom struggle? She called it as terrorism and compared VP to Osama Bin Laden.

      Q. What about the Sri Lankan Tamils in the State?
      A. We have already enunciated our policy with regard to Sri Lankan Tamils – refugees and the militants. The LTTE is just another terrorist group and we will deal with the menace as we would with any terrorist organisation.

          Old Thosa,

I don’t think your small brain can comprehend much more than a or b, c or d. That is how stupid people generally think, in terms of instant gratification and easy answers.

“There are several similarities between Jaffna Tamils and Malayalis. In Tamil Nadu, the Jaffna dialect and sometimes even the physical appearances of certain Jaffna Tamils, are often mistaken for Malayalam and Malayalis. Jaffna Tamils used to have more in common with Malayalis in the past but these traits have gone out of fashion.”

“Anthropologist M.D. Raghavan noticed many similarities in the phrases and words used by ordinary Malayalis and Jaffna Tamils in their everyday conversation.”

“There are also similarities between the traditional laws governing the transaction of property and marriage in Jaffna called the Thesavalamai and in Kerala called the Marumakkathayam”

“The way the vetti (traditional lower garment for men) is worn by Jaffna men follows the fashion of Kerala not Tamil Nadu.”

“The mode of cooking rice is also similar in Malabar and Jaffna: in contrast to Tamil Nadu method”

          • 0
            1

Wow! Lester the world renowned linguist says: “In Tamil Nadu, the Jaffna dialect and sometimes even the physical appearances of certain Jaffna Tamils, are often mistaken for Malayalam”
Do you even know anything of these two languages?
I know for a fact that the word “vinakiri” is perfectly understood as “vinegar” in Mozambique and Portugal. Does that make the Portuguese Africans or the Sinhalese Portuguese? As for cooking, why is it that kavun, kokis, halapa, pittu, are common to the Sinhalese and in Kerala? Did the Malayalees migrate from here?
You need to talk to your nursery teacher.

Wow, you are stupid beyond belief. I gave a long list of similarities between Malayalees and Jaffna Tamils, clearly you cannot read. No point explaining things to a government school fool.

Lester the private-school educated imbecile always runs away when challenged.
Many things does he claim, but no proof does he provide, be it ancient Sinhala electricity, Glyphosate-caused CKD, or Muslim cremations. He has never been to Kerala or Tamilnadu, but pontificates on their lack of toilets. He prefers to live in the West as a refugee, but wants us to support his Rajapaksa gods.
                Looooser.

              OC
There has been more trade between Jaffna and Kerala during the Dutch and even British colonial times than between Jaffna and Tamilnadu.
Cultural similarities are stronger between Sinhalese and Malayalis.
              1. The Shinala script is an admirably stylized adaptation of the Grantha script which the Malayalis adopted with minimal change.
              2. The Malayali wedding ceremony is brief and simple without a Brahmin priest much like the Poruwa ceremony.
              3. The female attire of cloth and jacket is another common factor. The sari gained wider usage in the post-independence era.
The paththini deviyo worship is very rare in the North. (Parts of Batticaloa have it suggesting sharing with Sinhalese.)
MD Raghavan made many interesting and valid observations, but he did not dig deep into history I suspect.
Wearing the vetti has also its caste variants, which Raghavan does not mention.

                SJ,
In the past, the Chera country extended to Cape Comorin, and was therefore much closer than today.

Lester, Malayalam is a daughter language of Tamil and modern-day Kerala is the ancient Tamil Chera Nadu. It is the Malayalees who branched off from the Tamils and not the other way around, either from North-East Sri Lanka or India. Tamil is the mother and Malayalam is the daughter. As it is commonly stated daughters look like their mothers and mothers do not look like their daughters, therefore it is stupid and silly to state that any Tamil either from Tamil Nadu or from North-East Sri Lanka is descended from Malayalees when in reality it was the people from ancient western Chera Tamil county who corrupted their Tamil or their local Tamil dialect Malayalam or Malabar Tamil that evolved into modern-day Malayalam.

Declaring a state of emergency which the protestors will use to wipe their backsides with, the crazy goat is digging his own grave. Lets hope the 225 parasites decide to scoot before violence erupts and they invade parliament in the hundreds of thousands and tear them to pieces. The youth are angry, hungry and may not fear bullets any more. The cowards in these buildings must shit their pants and withdraw before any of these admirable young men and women face the govt bullets and are martyred..

LP, I totally agree with your sentiments but do not underestimate Sir Kill and the Mafia family. The minority knows well how ruthless and murderous they are. If you believe in political killings, personal killing like Thaj, white vanning, kidnapping for ransom, death of many innocent people during and after war, killing of journalist committed by them, be assured they will not leave that easily. The only thing which is stopping them from committing such violence, is the IMF fund and possible international pressure. If they decide to unleash, it will be much worse than the two insurrections.

I have performed a Caesarean operation on the Womb of Time declared SWRD UPON VICTORY IN 1956.
Had he not been sidelined after the death of DS ,THE HISTORY OF THE COUNTRY would not have been so dramatic.

In the dock at the Trial stood the representatives of the social forces that he unleashed
Buddhist Monk,Ayurvedic Physician, Lumpen Proletariat etc………….
After releasing such forces to the centre of the Political stage attempting to resolve the Tamil concerns through the B-C Pact was akin to attempting to close the sluice gates
AFTER the gush of the pile of water. In that sense SWRD was unable to fathom the forces he had released, though he had felt their pulse and the build-up of their aspirations. I believe SWRD was essentially a Liberal at heart but then he was cheated in what was his due; Rest is History………….

I am unable to interpret the significance of the Black cloth on the face of his statue at
    Galle-Face……………………………………….

D.A. Rajapaksa the father of the present set of the Rajapaksa siblings followed SWRD in that famous cross-over in Parliament prior to 1956. Was that the moment that has brought the present crisis?……………

When you hide the truth at the beginning then you cannot stop hiding the truth until it blasts as an atomic bomb. We all can remember when the current president took the power or when they formed this government they never told us what is the state of economy of the country. They thought they can hide this with borrowing the money from China. When the Easter Bomb was planned to make sure the victory of the President, they never thought that it will kill the economy. They were adamant to have the Election even though the Corona took its part around the world from China and spread fast to the Western world with thousands of death. The President thought he is a war hero and he can easily win this Corona. Then as usual they bought few MPs to bring 20th amendment to bring another 10% brother from USA. When you appoint all of your family and other Criminals as Ministers and Top officials every body knew that you are here to rob this country and you are not bothered about the people or country or its economy. How long you can cheat people?

        SJ,
Yes, They are leaning with India after China played game with organic fertiliser supply but I am talking about the money borrowed from China by Mahinda for Hambantota project.

Have you checked out the fertilizer story fully?
If the Chinese fertilizer was contaminated, why did SL have to compensate that shipment as well as order a fresh consignment. Follow up stories to the end and do not stop when you hit a juicy bit.
What was this liquid nitrogen stuff from India? Organic fertilizer? Why did it ruin crops? Who took whom for a ride?
          Read more about Hambantota in:
“The Hambantota Port Deal: Myths and Realities” Untangling the truth about Chinese debt and Sri Lanka means cutting through some misleading media narratives, by Umesh Moramudali https://thediplomat.com/2020/01/the-hambantota-port-deal-myths-and-realities/
It is not a long essay and written in simple language.

            SJ,
“Have you checked out the fertilizer story fully?” I am not bothered about your story about Indian organic fertilizer because you are biased against Sri Lankan scientists.
Are you telling this story to a baby? The following summarises why the Rajapaksa regime paid compensation?
Sri Lanka Bows to Chinese Pressure Again
“We cannot afford to damage diplomatic relations over this issue,” Aluthgamage said explaining the government’s volte face.

A, I know that you cannot be bothered with anything inconvenient.
              *
Read the full account. Three different investigations (two European) cleared the Chinese fertilizer of contamination by any bacteria. The Chinese company had then demanded the full Agriculture Department investigation report. that has yet to come.
The Diplomat story stops in November 2021. Much followed it.
If the product was contaminated, why wold one ask for more of the same?

                SJ,
You have ignored the statement of Aluthgamage. It clearly proves the true story behind the scene. Do you know the samples Chinese sent to different investigations are the same for the sample sent to Sri Lankan scientists? The fact is Rajapaksa regime was threatened by Chinese and they have no option other than accepting it. Why cannot China give it to free to Sri Lanka if they really want to help Sri Lanka?

Are you attempting to camouflage the fact that China milked Langkang to the bones and dropped it when it is dried to Sahara Sand, as leaning to India?
Read the line again please. It is saying “leaning”. As you have been listing Ramayana in CT overwhelmed by Deva badu, you have no idea of how Rama is related to Sita. Borrowing from China has a synonym in Langkang as depositing in Dubai, Belarus…….There is no one single project is open ended like Chinese ones, were made with India. While without exception all Chinese projects became White elephants, Indian Colombo – North railway came as a not drying cash cow. It is not Sri Lanka “leaned” because Lankawe is chained to China because of its tie to the veto for Royals’ War Crime. Remember Ranil went to NYC to have a fight with the UNSG of that time, disgracefully sent back by the UN SG. Langkang started to lean to Bangladesh after China blacklisted People Bank. Langkang bought a vaccine for $15 from China . Bangladesh bought for $5 from and used that saved money to bend Langkang towards it. China is trying to shut off Langkang from the IMF because the IMF has told Langkang to reorganize the loan payment China. Isn’t that China heating and bending Langkang to India from the IMF?

            1

How does one manage to get in a place like Singapore? Exactly! Is that easy like in Langkang where Deva is appointed as the sole distributor to North? Or that as easy as making a whole Pakistani ship, sailing to Colombo, vanishing in to the this mist of the Indian Ocean? Because you wasted your young school days until Badiudeen gave a hand to lift you up to UK to study Communism, you are missing lot of Tamil. There is a Tamil saying that the power of the Chinese commission is it can shoot down to the hell. I know you never have learnt that.

      Ajith,
“When the Easter Bomb was planned to make sure the victory of the President,…”

      What a dumb assumption!
Are you suggesting that 6,217,162 retards elected another set of retards who ignored warnings about the impending terrorist attacks and allowed Muslim terrorists to carry out attacks to promote Gotabhaya Rajapakshe as the Presidential candidate?
Have you wondered why none of the Catholic MPs, both Sinhala and Tamil and their family members did not go to church on Easter Sunday?
Harin Fernando admitted that his farther warned him about the attack and told him not to go to Church. Have you wondered why he did not do anything to prevent the terrorist attacks by Muslims?

Use your brain before using the keyboard.

        EE,
You can’t decide whether this assumption is dump or real without an independent investigation. Don’t you know how Srisena gave PM to Mahinda in 2018? There are no Muslim Terrorists. The Bombers are part of the Sinhalese military intelligence funded by the Sri Lankan governments.

I too suspect something fishy. But there are too many suspects including the then president & prime minister, as well as officials. I will not make specific allegations until I am sure.

Who gained out of the Easter Bomb Blast??
Who awaited the Bomb Blast scenario to announce his/her candidacy for presidency of Sri Lanka??

That is not a fully valid argument to prove guilt.
The UNP gained most from the killing of a student by police shooting in Peradeniya in 1976.
          Did it conspire that killing?

Solomon West Dias Ridgway’s policies took Langkang to wherever he, himself, had gone. End his greed was the premonition to the country where it was about to sail. Solomon’s extreme cunning helped him to recognize the submerged attachment of the Sinhala Buddhists’ to the clueless communism. But he was not a visionary to foresee where all the countries were about to travel after World War II. They all have set their target as freedom, democracy and Industrialization. Unfortunately, the higher objects of secular Buddhism, free market & democracy, but with cunning-greedy minds, have derailed the country deep into Marianna drench. Like Anura Kumara, these Buddhist extremists were/are soaked in extreme communism for which they are incognizant of their paradoxical nature. Buddhism and Communism are like “having the cake and eating it too”. Communism thrives on forceful deprivation while Buddhism teaches voluntary austerity. If the Sinhala Buddhist were truly prepared to go on Buddha’s austerity, they wouldn’t have been trapped in the current country’s bankruptcy nightmare. Every Sinhalese wants to live like their imaginative American life, but they have learned to be the deadliest anti-Americanism in their politics. But by that nature the politicians have become the cow skin clad lion, learning to thrive on their unique Appa Diplomacy. Now Langkang is the most disgraced society by borrowing.

Their, until now, highly honored Royal are most disgraced greedy swindlers, criminals, arrogant, heavy-handed, merciless dictators. Old Rowdy King, for the last two months saying that as soon a replacement is presented he will leave. But he jumped into the Yahapalanaya with only 65 MPs in his party by a coup the trio, Ranil, New King and he secretly organized. Can he explain what kind of replacement he had that time, while UMP had 115 supporters? Now he says he wants to be on the power for the time people selected him. He told lies and did frauds to come to power. During his election campaign, CBK laughed at him when he could not answer the question of the value of rupee, as: “he looked left, he looked right, and he looked back” for somebody to help him to answer the question. “But he still could not answer the question”. Now he wants to hang on and fix the rupee. But how? At least can he answer the question he missed in 2019? No! The truth is he cannot resign because of the Old Beauty Queen, his same arrogant class wife.

In their previous government, this rowdy and Ponny rowdy laughed at Stalin father as the “Comedian.” These are cheap class politicians pictured PM Manmohan Singh underneath the skirt of CM Jayalalitha. What a backbone less cheap births these are now to accept Stalin’s enormous heart’s present. Somebody please donate some Parana cloths for Old Rowdy to wear before he go in front of people next time.
