With the sole aim of satisfying his vengeful agenda against Ranil Wickremesinghe and to put a stop to the proceedings of the Parliamentary Select Committee probing Easter Sunday bombings, petty Sirisena egged on by his lackey Dappula De Livera has made plans that would likely push the ailing country towards more political turmoil.

It is said Sirisena is now mulling the announcement of a Parliamentary election before holding a Presidential poll, to kill several birds with that one stone. He believes it would be disadvantageous for the UNF led by the UNP; a defeat suffered at a General election would prevent Wickremesinghe from being nominated Presidential candidate and believes it is the ideal way to put a stopper to the PSC.

Sirisena seeks to hold the General elections upon seeking approval at a non-binding national referendum. He had sought opinion of AG Dappula who had given him the go ahead.

Although Dappula gave the green light, it seems his legal advisers have warned against the move, pointing to the very real possibility of political turmoil that may erupt when the Presidential poll aspirations of a majority of parties will be crushed by the move. This list includes not just the UNP and Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna but also his very own SLFP.

The political column of the Sunday Times writing on the upcoming political impasse notes, “Sirisena’s main aim in going for a parliamentary general election first is because he believes that would lead to the defeat of the United National Party. Hence, he thinks, its leader and Premier Wickremesinghe will not be able to become a presidential candidate and would thus see a serious crisis within his party.”

As always, Sirisena’s petty battles with the PM has tainted national politics.
